EXCELLENCE IN MUSIC The next challenge is Creative Generation - State Schools Onstage (CGEN), which will take place at the Brisbane Convention Centre in July. Line Manager of the Music Program Mrs Wendy Maguire says, “Thirtyfour students from the school will participate in the event which includes a massed choir of 600 students and it will be open to the public.” Creative Generation will take students outside their local community and into the spotlight. In its twelfth year, it is Queensland’s largest youth performing arts event and aims to mentor and foster the next generation of performers. The students are excited at the prospect and believe the school music program offers them wonderful opportunities. Music captain, singer and saxophonist, Sophie Commens, says that it encourages creativity and gives students a sense of belonging.
Sam Boshammer, Annabelle Commens and Nicholas Brown also speak highly of the music program and are grateful for the support and encouragement they receive from their teachers. All are in the choral program as well as being instrumentalists. They point to the important role team work plays in the music program and say they hope to continue their musical education beyond primary school. Principal Miss Mona Anau is delighted to see the school’s musical progression through local to regional and state levels in such a short time. “Competing at this level means we can demonstrate excellence in music,” she explains. “Music uses high order skills which have a flow-on effect to areas such as science, maths and English.” The school is being creative in the way in which they deliver their curriculum because they have recognised the important
role that music has to play in enhancing student learning. Miss Anau went on to say that the innovative Music Excellence Program has been successful due to the commitment of teachers, parents and administration to ensuring that every child at Dalby State School has the opportunity to excel in Music. Although Dalby falls into the category of rural and regional schools, it offers the same opportunities to excel in the Music/Choral/Instrumental arena as students in urban areas. “The wider community should be extremely proud that state schools in Dalby are providing programs that are innovative and future orientated,” Miss Anau said.
