About Jandowae Jandowae is situated on Highway 82. It is 48 kilometres north of Dalby, en route to Mundubbera. Today, Jandowae is home to approximately 1000 people. Residents and visitors are well catered for having many of the amenities enjoyed by much larger towns. Visitors are always welcome in this Athlone Cottage, Jandowae friendly country community, with plenty of accommodation available in three hotels and a caravan park. Jandowae boasts a state of the art Community and Cultural Centre which incorporates the town library, tourist information, arts and crafts, professional offices, meeting room and public toilets. The Centre is also a Queensland Government Agency Program office, which provides one-stop access to more than 400 government services for the people of Jandowae and surrounding districts. Surrounded by rich alluvial soil, it is noted for cattle and grain growing. This quiet little country town is located in one of the largest wheat growing areas in Queensland. The rich soil of the district also produces some of the state’s finest barley, oats, sorghum, millet, panicum, sunflower, safflower and linseed. Jandowae also grazes and breeds cattle. Several notable dairy and beef studs can be found in the district. In recent times, a native flower growing industry, exporting to Asia, has been established. Jandowae has an Annual Agricultural Show held in late March. Showing of fine quality beef, show jumping and equestrian events, produce display and local arts and craft attract many entrants.

Jandowae is proud of its history. The June long weekend hosts the Jandowae Timbertown Festival, which was held for the first time in 2001, highlighting the importance of the timber industry to the region. Since 2002, it has become a bi-annual event. Visitors can access a number of scenic drives in the Diamondy and Cooranga North hills and across the Jimbour plains. On these drives, the historic stations of Jinghi Jinghi, Jolimont, Lyndley and Jimbour House may be seen. Activities such as Bowls, Golf, Tennis, Swimming and Squash can all be enjoyed, as well as a new skate park facility for the kids.

Jandowae’s History The first settlers arrived in Jandowae in the 1860s, with the first white child, Henry Bateman, being born in 1866. Few townships can lay claim to three different spellings of its name. The original name, Jindowie was initially named in a petition to the Secretary of Lands in 1862. The name was adopted from the aboriginal word for “waterhole”. Later, a man named Jack or John Dowaie set up a camping area so north and south bound travellers could rest. This was called the John Dowaie Camp. The second name, Jondowaie, came into being and was used in correspondence by early settlers. When the railway came to town in August 1914, the name was again changed to Jandowae, to save the confusion with the township, Jondaryan. The Timber industry has played a major role in the history of Jandowae and a large sawmill still plays an important role in the economy of the district. This industry is acknowledged by way of the “Timbertown Festival” which is held on the June long weekend of even numbered years. See www.jandowaetimbertown.org.au for more details. The first school in Jandowae was established in 1877 with an enrolment of thirteen children. The Jandowae State School now has 130 children from Prep to Grade 10. Jandowae has a number of features that would be of interest to the heritage buffs; the banks, post office and pub are but a few. The Queensland National Bank, located on the corner of High and George Streets, was built in late 1913. At a later date, it was changed to the National Australia Bank. The original building is currently a private residence. On the opposite corner, the existing ANZ Bank was originally the Union Bank and in 1970 merged with ANZ Bank Limited which is still in operation today. The district’s rich soil plains saw agriculture and industry thrive and the town’s infrastructure grew to accommodate the growing population as churches, halls and a school were established.
