Masquerade Ball The Chinchilla Rotary Masquerade Ball — an evening of glitter, glamour and drought relief support What a mysterious experience of a breath-taking ambience and a magical evening filled with gourmet food, excitement and the Rum Toss! A collector’s edition bottle of Bundaberg Rum was more than a desirable target for many ladies and gentlemen generously throwing their coins at it. ‘Bassline’ provided premium entertainment and musician, Kieran Lillis, promoted a feel good atmosphere for everyone to dance the night away.

A Note from the Team.. . The Western Downs has some exciting events occurring around the region in the next month. Most notably, Dalby is holding the Delicious & DeLIGHTful festival on the 23rd–24th August (p20), and the Beef, Bells & Bottle Tree Festival is scheduled for the 4th–14th September in Miles (p21-24). We encourage you all to visit these great local events, support your communities and have fun while meeting some new, friendly people! Ann had the pleasure of meeting with Chris and the team at Dalby Landscape & Home Garden Supplies this month, and she found that not only do they stock everything you need for the garden, but they have a wonderful range of gift and housewares available too! You can read about it on pages 16-17. This is the first of our Business Profile’s to be published, if you would like to have the opportunity to have your business advertised in this way, please phone Shelly: 0417 829 080. The Dalby Harvest now has a new home in the main street of Dalby, and Amy is loving the opportunity to work in the town! While it is the new home of the Dalby Harvest, feel free to drop in and have a chat to Amy about any of your design needs. She is happy to talk with you about design, and also help you go through your advertising options for any of our magazines! The office at 133 Cunningham Street (Chamber of Commerce building) is open Mondays to Wednesdays from 9am–4pm, and Thursday and Friday by appointment. Don’t forget that our Jandowae office is also a great place to get more information about design and advertising in the magazines; Kate and Karel are more than happy to help you out! We hope you enjoy your August edition of the ‘Chinchilla Vine’, and look forward to the great events that the Western Downs has to offer this month.

Springtime at the Gallery Will Be Something Special! The keen photographers of the Chinchilla Field Naturalists’ Club return with an exhibition of photographs and collected objects from their excursions around Chinchilla, Queensland, Australia and New Zealand at the Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery in September. The exhibition, entitled ‘Focus on Nats’, will showcase the photographic skills of many members of this local natural history club. Flora and fauna will form the backbone of the exhibition, with a particular focus on the diverse plants and animals found in our local Barakula Forest. Excursions to King Island, Tasmania, New Zealand’s South Island, the Victorian High Country and Kakadu are also represented and there are several photographs illustrating what members get up to on the club’s monthly outings.

Chinchilla Patches and Piecemakers YOUR TUTOR
on my new DVD “Beyond the Basics”. Experience has shown me that the techniques I include in this program are ‘favourites’ for those of you who are Hi, I’m Anne Mitchell, co-owner of into patchwork and quilting, as well as textiles teachers and dressmakers, Genesis Creations, along with my and … well … anyone who uses fabrics creatively. husband Alan. I have taught fabric designing for over 40 years; and I look forward to helping you create fabrics that express your personal silk painting for the past 20 years, style, and are as individual as you are… travelling extensively across Australia to Anne Mitchell demonstrate and teach these skills. As a former High School Teacher, with experience in retailing through my family business history, I became involved in teaching fabric painting through an Australian company, then went on to management responsibilities within that company. The love of what I had done for many years, combined with my past experience in this field, led us to start our own family business, with our own unique concepts, in July 1999. I look forward to growing old in this business, in the happiness that I really enjoy what I do … what we do together! OUR UNIQUE CONCEPT … From my foundation of working with other people’s products over many years, it has been my pleasure to work closely with an Australian paint manufacturing company to have them produce for us a range of paints and colours that are exclusively ours. It was my dream to have a colouring product that could achieve the vibrancy and beauty of traditional silk dyes without the complications of steaming them, or using chemicals to ‘fix’ them. The dream was also to create a colour that could be used on any fabric or fibre, from silks to synthetics, and across the range of polyester blends for use in ‘dyeing’ fabrics. With the assistance of our paint technicians, we DID IT! … called Liquid Radiance, made exclusively for Genesis Creations™, here in Australia. To complement these liquid colours, we have a range of thick, creamy paints, also made exclusively for us. These are paints that stay where you put them on the fabric, so are perfect for brush painting and stencilling, as well as printing and stamping techniques. Built on a soft-based cold cure formula, they are fully washable three days after painting, and maintain the soft feel of the fabric. Another ‘first in Australia’ in fabric designing for Genesis Creations™. OUR CHINCHILLA WORKSHOP 16-17 AUGUST 2014 … In this comprehensive two-day program, we will cover ‘the basics’ to help you understand the versatility of our Liquid Radiance, and explore a bunch of extensions as seen in “Down Under Textiles” magazine, and featured 10 August

Gardening
It's Winter? Sow What! Have you curled up with a pile of gardening books this winter to avoid the frosty mornings outside? The garden may rest in winter, but not the gardener! Put an extra jumper on and step outside. Just under the surface, your garden teems with life. Spring bulbs quietly wait to bloom, the bare stone fruit branches store their sap waiting to jump start spring, while poppies, foxgloves and pansies eagerly anticipate revealing their bright, happy faces. Winter days in the garden are beautiful! The perfect time to get out on your lawn and spray those pesky winter weeds. It won’t be long before you’re pulling off that extra jumper. Don’t forget to put on your gloves and boots before going into battle with your roses this year. Pruning and spraying them for black spot now will promote sturdy growth and gorgeous flowers in spring. If you’re not sure which spray to use, ask the staff at Chinchilla Garden Centre. Enjoy your garden in these cooler months! Several plants flower over winter, much to the cheerful delight of the lorikeets that know exactly where all the grevilleas grow. Are they visiting your garden? Hardenbergia, Eremophilas, Kangaroo Paw and many more plant varieties are flowering now. Also, more roses, as well as the standard roses, have just arrived in store. If you need an excuse to go plant shopping, a little wander through the Garden Centre will reveal wattle flowering now! Chinchilla Garden Centre

When Maria (Shannon Gralow) proves too high-spirited for life in a convent, she is sent to be the governess for the seven children of a widowed naval commander, Captain Von Trapp (Russell Reynolds). Her close relationship with the children and her generous nature gradually captures the heart of the Captain but the happiness of their marriage is cut short but Austria’s invasion by the Nazi’s who demand the Captain’s immediate return to service in their navy. This classic tale is loved for the many songs that bring the show to life, including Climb Every Mountain, Do-remi, My Favorite Things, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, So Long, Farewell and The Sound of Music.

Successful Succession for Envision Partners EnVision Partners has been planning for Gerard’s retirement over the past two years, enabling a smooth transition for customers from Gerard to their new advisors. This planning has ensured that EnVision Partners has maintained its capacity and technical skills, so as to continue to be able to present its quality service offerings to customers.
1. On Tuesday, 1st July, customers, team members and friends of EnVision Partners gathered to celebrate Gerard O’Sullivan’s retirement from the firm after 30 years in the accounting industry. Gerard has overseen the firm from being himself with five team members to a two partner firm employing 28 team members, with offices in Chinchilla and Hervey Bay. The firm has developed from a traditional compliance tax advisory firm to a taxation and business consulting firm, advising business owners in not just taxation, but also in profitability and wealth creation, business management and succession planning.
collaboratively agree that Gerard has been inspirational in their individual development, has provided each member with opportunities to enhance their careers and has left them with fun memories as they worked beside him. Envision Partners
The accounting industry has seen huge changes over the past 30 years. Gerard noted that the most significant change in the accounting industry has been the impact of information technology. In the 80s, information technology was in its infancy and electronic records were supported by huge paper files. Most practices had a computer. Now each employee has one and the offices are largely paperless. Snail mail has largely been replaced by email which is now being supplemented with secure client portals. EnVision Partners is indebted to Gerard for his commitment and passion to the firm, which has been a major factor as to how the firm has developed to what it is today. One thing you should do when you ‘settle down’ You’ve tied the knot, bought the house, got the family car, baby number one is on the way and you have settled into married life. But have you considered organising Life Insurance to allow for all these factors in your life? Now that it’s not just you anymore, you need to ensure your loved ones will be looked after if you’re no longer there. Here are some things to consider when choosing or adjusting your Life Insurance policy: Does your Life Insurance cover your debt? Ensuring your house mortgage, car loan, credit card debt are covered under your policy is the first step to safeguarding your family from inheriting your debt and from not having the home or car repossessed. What about child care and education? Everyone wants the best possible education for their children but this can be expensive and if you’re not there as the main ‘bread winner’ to support their learning, this can add extra strain on the household. Setting up your Life Insurance properly could see a payout to meet the ever growing cost of your child’s learning and education, guaranteeing them the best possible opportunities. The best advice is to seek advice specific for your situation. Be prepared and talk through your options. Don’t leave it until it’s too late. Family Trust Vesting Date A Discretionary or Family Trust is utilised by many to help protect assets and assist in taxation considerations. Upon the Trust being established, most people would assume that the Trust continues on in perpetuity. Unfortunately, this is not the case and you are advised not to shuffle the Trust Deed ‘out of sight, out of mind’. The Trust has a date that is defined in the Trust Deed as a ‘vesting date’. This is the date that the Trust will end and, as a general rule, it is no more than 80 years from the date that the Trust commenced.
date to arrive unexpectedly. It is important to consider your obligations under the Trust Deed. If you are the Trustee of the Trust, it is important to review the Trust Deed and know when the vesting day is. As the Trustee (or if you are a Director of a Corporate Trustee), you not only have a responsibility to know the vesting date but should consider what may need to happen on this date. For example, the conclusion of a Trust will see the distribution of all assets held by the Trust disbursed to the nominated beneficiaries.
Eighty years down the tract is a considerable time and surely no cause for concern? This is possibly so – although you may have caught a glimpse of the recent high profile case involving the Rinehart family. In essence, Gina Rinehart attempted to extend the vesting date of one of the Rinehart Family Trusts. The application shone the spotlight on the issue of the vesting date as the Rinehart children (beneficiaries) successfully opposed it. Whilst Gina Rinehart failed to effect change in her case, it should be noted that vesting dates are able to be changed if the Trust Deed allows such change. In addition, an application may be made to the Supreme Court under the appropriate legislation (Trusts Act).
This is where you may need legal advice. Distribution of assets to the nominated beneficiaries in the proportions and manner that the Deed stipulates could have potential legal ramifications, such as capital gains tax, transfer duty and possible liability issues. Sourcing credible legal advice in this specialised area of law may prove to be prudent. We advise a review of the Trust Deed and written advice as to what options you may have with your Family Trust. Contact the author at MCW if you require advice in the area of the law of Trusts.
The lesson learnt from the Rinehart court action is not to allow the vesting Tim Fuller

availability is, that unlike the previous three years, rental stock is available for Chinchilla local people. This also provides us with the opportunity to attract and retain business here and for businesses to attract staff housed in Chinchilla and to retain those employees as Chinchilla locals. Similarly, our town now enjoys more competition and more employment opportunity. Whilst across many industries supply may have caught up with demand with many new businesses established here, we now enjoy a bigger pool giving us much more choice. Let’s look at food as just one example. In the last two years, we now have a much wider and more sophisticated choice of cafes and restaurants and fast food outlets and also an extension in the hours in which food and beverage services are available to us. The business owners and staff, who have established business here over the past five years, have for the most part become citizens resident in Chinchilla. And of course, the CSG construction phase has slowed not stopped. For example, Origin needs to establish another 1100 gas wells in the next [3?] years as part of its Phase One operation, with more wells and infrastructure to be constructed and established and also as existing wells come to a natural end to production requiring replacement. In summary, our growth has slowed to robust. Healthy and sustainable away from the steep vertical growth we had recently experienced. Bill Blake Chinchilla Chamber of Commerce and Industry

YearTen-School Camp Cost of camp = $285 Time of departure = 6am Seeing Year 10s step up and show their true brilliance = priceless In a shift from previous years, the 2014 Year 10 Camp was revamped to reflect the change in the Queensland Senior Secondary structure, with Year 10s now included as Senior Leaders of the school. The camp was held at the renowned Emu Gully Adventure Education Centre, with July 16-18 being the only vacancy for the year due to the popularity of the venue. Sam and Justine from Peer Power once again worked with all Year 10 students prior to the camp, focusing on activities and shared experiences to help students move away from ‘playing the victim’ and developing their resilience. The camp saw all students partake in a number of activities ranging from team challenges to character-building tasks, all with an underlying ANZAC theme. The ‘Kokoda Track’ and ‘Nightwalk’ tasks were deemed the highlights of the camp, which involved students banding together and working out strategies to achieve their mission. Twister Buggies and Rockclimbing finished off a brilliant camp before the weary but elated group headed home Friday afternoon. ‘Thank you’ to the staff at Emu Gully and Chinchilla State High School for the smooth operation of the camp and also to the 66 students who attended and allowed us to see what an inspirational and capable bunch of leaders we have in Year 10. Scores can be compared to those of children of the same age providing an accurate indication of performance compared to peers. While this test does not measure the important skill of being able to see things (visual acuity), it does provide invaluable information regarding the brain’s ability to process visual information. Deficiencies in these skills have been linked to problems with learning to read and underachievement at school. In my opinion the Jordan Left Right Reversals test is an effective screening tool to assist in the early detection of learning disabilities. It is certainly a worthy inclusion in any school based screening and is an important part of my comprehensive vision assessment. Got a question for OpTomTom?
