Engaging, educational and enjoyable kids’ workshop It is no wonder crafting is such an amazing thing to do! Favoured by the very young and the very old, it’s often a wonderfully calming activity that encourages a freedom of expression, developing imagination and fine motor skills.

Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery held a very special ceramics workshop at the Chinchilla Creative Centre all day Wednesday, 22nd January. The group of 15 children were kept busy as they took part in an “Arts on Grass” Workshop that was composed and quiet with the hours just melting away. It was led by talented local artist, Karen Gaskell and assisted by Helen Dennis, the volunteer director. It is amazing to discover what can be created from what may originally seem like an uninspiring lump of clay. As soon as children are given clay, they immediately begin to mould and shape it. They become aware that they are in charge and have influence over the medium as it is quick to respond to their fingers. This activity is perhaps more challenging than it first appears but it is often a wonderfully calming and relaxing time as children become totally absorbed in the making and decoration of their work and they use plenty of creative concentration. The experience of working with clay is absolutely invaluable for sensory development, motor skills, self esteem and self expression, problem solving skills, discipline and pride. They love smoothing their fingers over the surface as they turn it around and around for inspection.

Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery is a volunteer-run art gallery which services the town of Chinchilla on the Darling Downs in Queensland. The Gallery has been an integral part of the Chinchilla Civic Centre since its opening in 1999. Activities at the Gallery include presenting new artworks from local and visiting artists, touring exhibitions, official exhibition openings, guided tours for community groups and schools, arts and crafts for kids, workshops for artists and a main gallery space for major monthly exhibitions, with a secondary gallery, the Outer Bark Gallery, for community groups and teen artists. There is also lots of information sharing about the arts in our local community through its Newsletter and Facebook page.

Happy LOVE month! We have a very romantic ‘Valentine’s Day Edition’ for you this month. Our new journalist, Ann Alcock, has written a beautiful story on the history of St Valentine’s Day and you can read this on page 27 of this edition. Australia Day was celebrated in Chinchilla at the Chinchilla Historical Museum, with events and activities for all ages. Read about what happened in Chinchilla on the 26th January on pages 6 and 7. On a more serious note, Western Downs Magazines have decided to lend a hand to a magnificent charity; ‘Aussie Helpers’. This organisation is carrying out invaluable work in drought affected regions of Queensland and New South Wales. They are running initiatives such as ‘Buy A Bale’ to lend a hand to those who need it at the moment. You can read all about the ongoing devastation that is affecting farmers right on our doorstep and find out how you might be able to help on pages 12-13. These stories may bring a tear to your eye, but we need to do something to bring this situation to light. Until next month, let’s pray for rain.

1. Australia Day commemorates the establishment of the first European settlement at Port Jackson, now part of Sydney, in 1788. It is an opportunity for Australians to come together to celebrate our country, culture and thoughts on what makes Australia great. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a day of fun for all, with the highlight for families being the summer playground with many packing a picnic and sunscreen and heading to their favourite spot to enjoy all the action. There are reflections on the achievements of the nation and explorations of ways to make our country even better for future generations.

The Australia Day in Chinchilla was celebrated in style by the Western Downs Council hosting an official ceremony and presentation at the Chinchilla Historical museum on Sunday 26th. Local Rotarians did a tremendous job cooking up bacon and egg breakfast from an early hour and the museum crew kept the kids happy with their exciting mini-rail adventure through the museum grounds. Ambassador, Professor David Tudehope, presented the local and regional winners of the Australia Day official community awards. Those Australians and a community group made an outstanding positive contribution to our region. Their commitment, endless generosity and massive accomplishments show values that shape our nation. On a personal note, with this being my first Australian Day as an Australian Citizen, the reflections on our history and visions towards our future fills me with a sense of pride and acknowledgment of the freedoms which we all enjoy. Community Chinchilla Toastmasters Members from Chinchilla Toastmasters’ Club attended the Area 31 Conference and Leadership training in St George on the 18th and 19th January. Robyn Mapp and Julie Grimes represented our local club in the four competitions - International, Humorous, Table Topics and Evaluation. Area 31 takes in four clubs - Roma, St George, Tara (Country Chatters) and Chinchilla. The International Contest is a 5 to 7 minute speech on any topic in which the speaker competes at every level and may have a chance to compete against Toastmaster members

world-wide. This was won by David Bowden of Roma. Robyn Mapp gave some heat to the competition with her speech on ‘Fire Walking’. The Humorous Contest, also 5 to 7 minutes, was won by Julie Grimes with a speech about the joys of camping titled ‘Under the Stars’. Table Topics is a 1 to 2 minute impromptu speech where the speaker has only a few seconds prior knowledge of the topic, which was “Is it more charitable to give money or your time?”. This was won by Stella Baxter of St George. Evaluation is the heart of Toastmasters where feedback is given to speakers in a positive and constructive way. In the time frame of 2 to 3 minutes, this contest was won by Ann Smith of Country Chatters. The four winners will go on to compete for Western Division level at Goondiwindi in March.

Leadership in Toastmasters’ Clubs is shared by several executive members who have different roles and work together for the success of the club and its members. Chinchilla Toastmasters’ Club is a non-profit organization. We provide a supportive and positive learning experience. Members are empowered to develop their communication and leadership skills. This results in greater selfconfidence and personal growth.

Community Chinchilla Police Report Overall, it was a busy Christmas and New Year period for us all here at Chinchilla Station. Unfortunately, it has been a horror start to the year in the South West District on the roads, with several fatal and serious injury crashes since the start of the year. Being only three weeks into the year, I would take this opportunity to reiterate the need for people to pay attention when driving on the roads. We, as police, lose count of the times that we see the outcome of a simple period of inattention resulting in serious traffic crashes. It seems that all too often people take the simple act of driving somewhere way too lightly, often with dire consequences for the victims, families and communities. Whilst on the topic, Chinchilla has had only three drink drivers caught since the start of the year. While I would like to see zero, this is a move in the right direction from previous months. I, personally, take great offence at the fact that people still think they have the right to drink drive. This stupid and selfish act is often done with absolute intent and shows a total lack of regard for all other road users and members of the community.

Of course, all information can be provided anonymously if you wish. Chinchilla Station is set to have its facelift commencing mid March, 2014 and is expected to continue for six weeks. During this time, there will be some disruptions to services provided, however, we ask for your patience whilst this is occurring. Unfortunately, we have been reduced from two administration officers to one, and the demand for Queensland Transport services has increased exponentially over recent years. Mel does the best she can do with the huge workload that Queensland Transport duties impose, along with the day to day station administration, so please be patient and understanding. Also, remember that Queensland Transport has offices in Dalby and Toowoomba, so maybe time your QT business with your next out of town trip.

We have also made a number of arrests over the past month in relation to drug offences around Gerard BRADY town, with a recent amphetamine lab and a OIC Chinchilla Station quantity of amphetamine being discovered in Nowland Street, Chinchilla during a search warrant. This is particularly concerning in a residential area given that these labs are very volatile and often result in large explosions. Drugs continue to be a scourge in our communities and can almost always be linked to property crime within the area. Since mid December, police from Chinchilla station have executed ten search warrants at numerous addresses in town resulting in 15 people being arrested on 27 drug related charges. Several of these charges have resulted in persons being charged with supplying

Community Compact Prints 2012 During March, the Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery, in conjunction with our local Chinchilla Arts Council group, will be presenting an exciting collection of contemporary prints in compact cases by Australian and International artists. Curated by Umbrella Studio, the one hundred and sixty-six prints showcase the works of North Queensland’s printmaking talent, alongside National and International artists from twentytwo countries. Framed by mounted CD cases, the works are etched, scratched, watermarked, stamped, rolled, blocked-in and engraved, each carrying a story of its own. This small-sized art invites close inspection. The range of themes, textures and colours awaken your senses. The collection displays a variety of traditional and digital works including relief, intaglio, serigraph and new media printmaking. With no limits except size, the topics, textures and colours will inspire experimentation in a variety of print forms. Compact Prints 2012 is a collection of stunning work from our global community of printmakers.

Compact Prints is a signature exhibition of Umbrella Studio and was first launched in 2002. Due to overwhelming interest from overseas in 2004, the exhibition expanded into an International collaboration with nearly 140 participants. In 2010 and 2011, Compact Prints 2008 and 2010 toured throughout regional Queensland and NSW as part of Artslink OnTour Exhibition Program. Artslink Queensland (Queensland Arts Council) has always been dedicated to bringing quality visual arts into regional and remote areas, supporting Queensland artists and communities in celebrating their creativity and diversity. Umbrella Studio Director, Vicki Salisbury, says, “Travelling a high quality exhibition of International printmakers to new audiences in Asia fits within our core business and is a very thrilling project. Our aim is to raise the profile of North Queensland artists and Umbrella Studio locally, nationally and internationally”.

Community Tougher Water Restrictions for Western Downs Towns Water supplies across the Western Downs continue to drop due to consumption, hotter temperatures and lack of significant rainfall this summer, leading to Brigalow, Chinchilla, Tara, and Warra moving to tougher water restrictions from midnight this Friday, 24 January. Council Spokesperson for Utilities â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Water, Wastewater and Gas Councillor George Moore said some water supplies across the region have dropped below trigger levels, forcing Council to implement tighter water restrictions. When Annie’s husband John dies from leukaemia, she and her best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new sofa in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four fellow Woman’s Institute members to pose nude with them for an “alternative” calendar. With their modesty spared only by artfully placed cakes, knitting and flower arrangements, and a little help from the hospital porter and an amateur photographer they complete their calendar. The calendar is a huge success but Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame. Based on a true story, Calendar Girls became the fastest selling play in British theatre history and a worldwide hit, showing one night only at the Empire Theatre.

You may be a long time off retirement, but planning early will help you achieve a smooth transition to your golden years. The second best time is now.” A succession plan is a strategy you put in place to identify and develop the next person/s to lead your business. That could be an employee you are grooming, an investor you are courting to purchase the business or a family member from the next generation who is taking the reigns. 2. No matter what your succession path looks like, there are two key aspects you have to get right: 1.

Emperor Claudius II believed that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families and so he forbade marriage for young men. Valentine is said to have defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When his actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Prior to his execution he was visited in prison by a young girl and before his death is said to have written her a letter which he signed “from your Valentine”, an expression we continue to use today. The oldest known valentine still in existence is a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. For many years people continued to declare their love with individual hand written notes. These have largely been replaced by commercial greeting cards and the digital age has given us e-cards. Health & Beauty Local Talents Commit to Chinchilla Dental Practice One of Chinchilla’s most longstanding local businesses has experienced some exciting changes over the past few months. A definite local flavour is now apparent at Chinchilla Dental Practice, as late last year, Dr Gina Irwin and her husband, Wes, became part-owners of the practice in Middle Street. Also, Mr Brad McCormack recently started his CDP journey as a dental hygienist/therapist. Dr Irwin and Mr McCormack are proud to call Chinchilla home and love the rural lifestyle. The Chinchilla Dental Practice has been operating since 1951 with the lion’s share of work at the practice undertaken by members of the Clarke family. For decades, CDP was owned and operated by Dr Ian Clarke who was joined by his son, Donald, in the late 70’s. Donald’s mother was also a dentist, predominantly working as the government dentist. Donald’s wife, Lindy, has been another crucial factor in the development and growth of CDP, overseeing many changes, including the employment of more staff and several renovations. Dr Gina Irwin began her time at CDP in 2001. Prior to this, Gina attended Chinchilla State School, where she was School Captain. Gina was also very successful during her time at Chinchilla State High School, having the honour of achieving Junior and Senior Dux and School Captain. After school, Gina enrolled in a Bachelor of Dental Science at UQ, eventually achieving

Honours (Class 1) at the end of 1999. After one year with Queensland Health in Roma, she contacted Don and Lindy Clarke, who were coincidentally at that time, searching for a female dentist. The relationship has blossomed from there over many years. Gina married another local, teacher, Wes Irwin in 2001 and they have three children, Fletcher, Rupert and Zali. Mr Brad McCormack was born and raised in Chinchilla, also choosing to study in Brisbane. Brad graduated late last year, and during that time, he was already negotiating with the Clarkes to return to his hometown to polish his skills and provide a great service. Brad is looking forward to working in such a supportive work environment. He is already enjoying connecting with familiar faces as well as seeking the guidance of experienced mentors in Dr Clarke, Dr Irwin and CDP’s third dentist, Dr Andrew Sharpe. “The Clarkes and dentistry in Chinchilla go hand in hand. They’ve been strong contributors to the community for decades and I’m excited to join a practice with so much proud history,” Mr McCormack said.
