Chinchilla Show 2014 The grounds have been swept, the rides are set, trucks have been unloaded and animals washed, groomed and ready for the show. That’s right it’s 102th Chinchilla Show and there was plenty to do, to taste, to see and to smell for everyone. As a result of the Show’s vast cultural significance, a public holiday is held in Chinchilla on the Show Friday.

From the Editor The office is feeling chilly in the mornings now, and many coffees are being consumed to warm up the girls left in the office - Kate, Karel and Amy. Jess has left us for her maternity leave, and now has a beautiful baby daughter in her family. We are waiting patiently to meet Annabelle Eliza and can’t wait until Jess is back (even though she’s only been gone for a week). In the meantime, we have been busy putting together the June edition of the Chinchilla Vine. We have follow up photos from the Chinchilla Show (pages 2-3), Mother’s Day Classic (page 6) and the Make It, Grow It, Love it Festival on page 8. Plenty of Winners at Burrandowan The crowds kept up a 90 year tradition and flocked to the Burrandowan Picnic Races last Saturday, with over 1500 people travelling from across southern Queensland and interstate. The Fashions of the Field were hotly contested, several people celebrated their birthdays at the event and regular visitors settled into campsites and their regular vantage points. "It's great when people start arriving during the week, and then on the morning of the races a buzz and excitement surrounds the track," Burrandowan Race Club president Brendan McCormack explained. "There is always plenty to keep our committee busy on the day but we also love the chance to catch up with friends and to see the day unfold."

The five race program had strong fields, with plenty of support for the bookmakers. "We can't hold the day without the horses, and we appreciate the trainers and jockeys coming here, too." "Our sponsors have been supportive in a year that has been difficult for our region, with 3 floods in 6 weeks and then a drought within 10 months, and we thank each and every one of them for this. "We are hopeful we will have raised a significant amount for the Care Flight helicopter service and that our community groups have also benefitted from the day." Chinchilla White Gums Gallery Merchandise! Merchandise! Commencing in June, the Gallery’s merchandise cabinet will showcase four new ranges of art and craft work: Chinchilla Spinners and Weavers, ceramicist Janette O’Hanlon, fabric artist Penny Eamer, and jeweller Sangita Daniel. These works will be on sale for four months, after which a new range of products and artisans will be displayed. For the cabinet, Janette O’Hanlon has created a ‘Handbuilt Fairy House Collection.’ The ceramic fairies homes are hand built, making each piece unique and the colour can vary from a pastel to a very dark solid colour. All of the fairy houses can be displayed inside or outside. Penny Eamer has turned her hand to creating unique fabric dolls in bright, eclectic colours and patterns. Her new range of fascinators is designed for the fashionistas amongst us, who require that one off hat apparel. Sangita Daniel will be creating more of her beautiful lampwork beads that have proved very popular at our Back to Black exhibition. Her beads are artfully placed in jewellery pieces for young and old to wear. The Chinchilla Spinners and Weavers are busily engaged in knitting all those lovely Winter woollies to keep all your appendages warm. All items will be for sale until the end of September, when a new range of merchandise will appear! Chinchilla White Gums Gallery
An Invitation to Artists and Craftworkers Local artists and craftworkers are invited to exhibit their works in the merchandise cabinet. Application forms are available from the Gallery Director, Helen Dennis.
Celebrating Indigenous Culture July at the Art Gallery will see the return of Trudy and Amanda Tronc, and the introduction of ceramic artist Shirlee Dawson, Trudy’s sister. Trudy and Amanda are well known in the Chinchilla district for their artwork and their participation in indigenous art activities within the local community. All three artists are members of the Eastern Arunta (or Arrernte) people of Central Australia, whose traditional lands include the area of Alice Springs and East MacDonnell Ranges. Their exhibition promises to bring a series of works of contemporary Aboriginal art, both paintings and ceramics, which will tell the story of being indigenous in a modern world. Amanda is well known for having won the 2012 National NAIDOC poster competition, which depicts the Aboriginal Tent Embassy on the lawns of Parliament House in Canberra 40 years ago. At the time Amanda stated: ‘I want my artwork to show that it is important to understand the history behind us and that our culture is a part of our people – not dwindling, but getting stronger the more our mob succeed and pave the way for the future generations.’ This exhibition from three Eastern Arunta women promises to show just this. Cake Decorating Classes – Practice Makes Perfect! In 2009 when Mary Reid and Cheryl Stace opened Merivale Cakes and Crafts at Highfields, the super hype surrounding the current cake decorating revolution was just starting. In the 5 years since, they have been teaching their Sugarcraft range at their Highfields cake studio and have introduced over 50 different classes, presented up to 70 certificates each year and have taught over 200 students (with some travelling from as far as Emerald, Roma and Townsville). Merivale’s training portfolio ranges from beginner, to intermediate, to advanced, with some custom-designed classes (to suit the individual skills needed) and user choice (where students can choose the mix of skills that they wish to advance). Delivery options include day, evening, week day and weekend classes and small class size which allows for maximum attention to students. In August and November 2014, Merivale will run beginner classes in Chinchilla. With many western Queensland students travelling to Highfields for classes, Merivale has decided to run two trial workshops in Chinchilla to see if there is a market for further classes in rural communities.

However, Merivale do a lot more than create amazing cakes for clients and run a school. They are also very active in using their craft to support the community. On an annual basis, they run demonstrations for schools and community groups, creates cakes for charities, provide sponsorships for the Brisbane Ekka, Toowoomba and Goombungee Shows, and conduct community workshops at the annual Cobb & Co Museum Have-A-Go festival and the Highfields Cultural Centre. Recently, Mary negotiated an agreement with three rural shows to provide sponsors and judging until 2016. Merivale conduct a range of business development classes and mentors a group of advanced students who are almost ready to open new business ventures of their own. To accelerate the skilling for these students Merivale organises workshops (in Highfields and Melbourne) with some Australian and world class Sugarcraft specialists and authors to teach at their Highfields studio. The success of Merivale’s Sugarcraft classes can be measured by their students’ results from the regional and Royal shows and the international expo competitions and tours that they organise. During the 2014 Toowoomba and Goombungee shows, students achieved over 30 awards and at the UK 2012 and 2013 international cake decorating competitions students won a combined 9 awards. These are amazing results considering the competition pieces were transported safely half way across the globe and in light of the high standard of entries, against very experienced decorators. These achievements are truly inspiring and they are from a local Highfields business who is passionate about passing on the art of cake decorating to all aspiring students. Merivale Cakes & Training

My Story
Harley Walker D
on't ask 87 year old Harley Walker whether he is thinking of retiring. He says he has retired. For Harley, retirement is running a 162 hectare working property six kilometres from Jandowae, with 30 cows, a bull and border collie, Sally. He has always enjoyed hard work. Harley grew up during the depression. At the age of four he moved with his parents and three brothers from NSW to Darr Creek on the Darling Downs, where his father got work cutting Brigalow scrub. Initially the family lived in a tent and then an old school before moving to a house where the family, which had now grown to 13 children, slept two or three to bed. Harley has vivid memories of bath days when water would be heated in the 12 gallon (45 litre) copper and the children jumped into the same water one after the other. The children attended school at Darr Creek, but before school, there were jobs to do such as milking the cows. They travelled by horse and sulky until the sulky

“We were meant to wear out, not to rust out" broke and they were forced to walk, which often meant they were late. The family had little money for clothing and shoes and Harley recalls how difficult it was to keep warm in winter.
pine to work from. Harley says that the trick here was to jump down before the tree fell. He also learned to use the axe with both right and left hands to scarf or bevel the tree.
Leaving school and going to work at an early age was the only option open to many children during those years. When he was 10 years old, Harley spent six weeks mustering following the 1936 drought. The next year he worked on a dairy farm for 17 shillings and six pence per week, plus free board, while still going to school.
Living alone in a tent in the bush is not everyone's cup of tea, but Harley relished it until he met Lorna and they began courting. Harley would ride his bicycle 21 miles (38 kilometres) along a dirt road to meet Lorna and go to a dance or to the pictures. His best time for the trip was one hour and ten minutes.
Harley's life passion has been timber cutting. He says it is in his blood and from an early age he worked with his father and brother. At 16 he became a professional timber cutter and on the weekends he broke in horses, built tanks and did ring-barking.
Harley and Lorna married and purchased a property near Jandowae where they raised their three daughters and two sons. They are obviously devoted to each other and speak gratefully of their 64 years of married life together
Timber cutting is not easy and is not for the faint-hearted, but Harley believes that his current good health is due to the level of fitness he gained during this period. Starting at 4am, he and his partner would each cut 5,000 super feet of timber for £4/15 shillings a day.
Harley Walker keeps fit. Two operations for open heart surgery and a hip replacement have not slowed him down. He can still shoot straight and regularly goes out spotlighting and is the preferred marksman in the district for dingo and other pest management. His personal motto is “we were meant to wear out, not to rust out”.
Some of the trees had a girth of 3 meters and others required a spring board platform of hoop

The Rose Bug Have you been bitten by the rose bug? So many gardeners say they started with just a few roses and suddenly three or four years later they found themselves surrounded with 30, 50 or even 100 rose bushes. There are many different rose forms, from the elegant hybrid teas to sprawling ruffled heritage roses and perfect little miniature roses with pixie size flowers. The temptation is to collect them in all the colours of the rainbow and winter is the perfect time to do just that. There are hundreds of gorgeous bare rooted roses that have just
arrived at the Chinchilla Garden Centre.
Roses are really quite easy care. Soak your bare rooted roses in a bucket of diluted liquid seaweed solution before digging a hole as deep as the roots and twice as wide. Place your rose plant so that the bud union with the grafted rootstock is 3-5cm above the soil level and back fill around the roots. Top dress with some Searles rose and citrus compost mix. Use your diluted seaweed solution to water the roses in well. For more tips on pruning and black spot remedies see the tips section of the Chinchilla Garden Centre website
Roses use similar fertilisers and potting mix to citrus trees. If your garden has both, you can use the same products. New citrus trees have also just arrived at the garden centre and many are dwarf varieties suitable for growing in smaller gardens or in large pots. Come and have a look, but beware of the rose bug which may just make you take home another few roses for your garden! Chinchilla Garden Centre

ForkForce Australia ForkForce Australia launched its new Enforcer rough terrain forklift range in mid 2013. To date, the Enforcer rough terrain forklift has been a massive success in Australia with over 1000 Enforcers forklifts sold. The rough terrain has been developed specifically for the Australian market and to Australian standards. According to Adrian Martin, Operations Director at ForkForce, “We had to double our original order and the factory has been working overtime to keep up delivery because there has been such a high demand ever since we introduced them to the market mid-2013”. The launch of this range has been an Australia wide success with particular interest for the rough terrain 32 June
forklift from ForkForce’s Toowoomba branch. The range currently includes 2.5 and 3.5 tonne lift capacity with lift heights from 3.3m to 6m in both 2 and 3 stage masts. ForkForce attributes the success of these units to being the most competitively priced rough terrain forklift in the market with great features like its compact design, high ground clearance, integral side shift, traction tyres and high quality Yanmar engines. Martin went on to say, “The popularity has been so high that our own hire department is struggling to secure these units for our hire fleet because most of these forklifts are selling even before they have arrived”.
Even more promising than the huge success these forklifts have seen in the Australian retail market has been the number of forklift dealers around Australia who have been quick to acquire these new rough terrain forklifts for their own rental fleets! Forkforce’s product range includes everything from walkie stackers, reach trucks, 1 tonne to 25 tonne forklifts with an extensive range of lift and reach capacities and fuel types. Cosmetic Elegance Clinic Turns 7! Seven years ago Dr Eddie Roos realised a long held dream. “I saw the synergy that could occur by combining a medical skin practice with a beauty salon: medical treatments with the best cosmetic outcome in mind. It was a new concept at the time but I truly believed patients would benefit from a more holistic approach to skin care. With a dream and a business plan, Cosmetic Elegance Clinic was born.” Now, seven years later, the clinic has grown beyond Dr Roos’ expectations. It is a comprehensive skin clinic, encompassing cosmetic and beauty treatments, a world class laser clinic and, with his special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer, a well-respected skin cancer clinic too. “But we couldn’t have got to where we are today without our dedicated staff,” said Dr Roos. “Together we aim to provide our clients with skin care that is uncompromising in its professionalism and quality, in a comfortable and personal environment.” Cosmetic Elegance Clinic is serious about skin care, with a passion for their treatments and love for what they do. Practice manager Gil Campbell needs come first, and we endeavour to answer any Cosmetic Elegance Clinic said, “We believe in an age of increasing technology skin concerns and questions no matter how big or that personalised service is imperative. Stress – It Can Affect Us All The founder of World Organic, Megan Douglas, has been kind enough to provide me with the following information to help some of my readers cope and deal with stress. Stress affects many of our friends and family members and the effects it has on our overall well-being and physical health can be detrimental. How To Manage Stress: It is important to remember that stress need not affect us in a negative way. It is created by our reaction to situations and not by the situation itself. If we can temper our reactions, if we can manage life’s roller-coaster with a degree of equanimity and perspective, then we can minimize the adverse consequences of stress.

•
First and foremost, know what your stressor is! Too often, people accept that they are stressed without taking the time to properly think through exactly what it is that is making them stressed. Anything can cause you stress – your work, your relationships, your body image, even the poor performance of your favourite sports team. Learn to identify what is making you stressed. It’s a necessary first step in dealing with the problem. Try meditation. The benefits of meditation are vast. If you’ve got the time, have a look at our blog on meditation in the ‘Soul’ section of our website. The simple action of breathing in a meditative state will add oxygen to your system and will bring you a measure of focus and control.
•
Moderate your consumption of alcohol and/ or cigarettes. They’re crutches. They might dull the feeling of stress in the short term, but they do nothing to help the problem and have their own health-related costs.
•
Live well. Get a good night’s rest (seven hours minimum), eat healthily, exercise, pamper yourself occasionally, make time for family and friends, get a pet (if you like • animals!). All of these things have been shown to help mitigate against stress.
•
Know your limits and be prepared to either say no or get help. It’s when we take on too much that we’re most likely to experience stress.

Try hypnotism. Like meditation, hypnotism can be particularly useful in helping you

When you become stressed, the amount of blood and oxygen which is supplied to your skin lessens dramatically. As a result, your skin will often take on a grey pallor and become dry, flaky and prone to irritation. When this happens, it is as important to care for your skin as it is for your general physical and emotional self. Take the time to cleanse and moisturize, and even visit a masseur if you can. It’s highly unlikely, unless you live in a cocoon, that you can avoid stress. However, if you opt for a thoughtful, balanced approach to life you can manage it and you can master it. In the end, that’s a much more desirable option than having it master you. Chantahl Stedman

I keep seeing these ads on TV. What is my macular and why do I need to get it checked? The macular is the central area of the retinal at the back of your eye responsible for high resolution or detailed sight.
