Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17, is an official Christian feast day stemming from the early seventeenth century and observed by the Catholic Church. The day celebrates the tradition and customs of the Irish people in general. made the most of the afternoon. Some dressed up St. Patrick’s style, wearing a lot of green, and others got lucky with lucky shamrocks and raffles. Visitors were able to purchase sweets, books, jams, chutneys, sauces, pot plants and much more. Kids had plenty of time to burn a bit of energy on a jumping castle and have their faces painted. The Leprechaun, and the pot of gold he keeps hidden away, is the mythical creature also presented as symbols on this day. The Harp, a musical instrument used in Ireland for many centuries, is another symbol used by people celebrating the St Patrick’s festivities. This definitely was the perfect event for anyone looking for St. Patrick’s Day fun in the tradition of happiness and the Irish spirit. Aja O’Leary

Run, support and raise Whilst a small number of the rivers and creeks may be flowing again, some farmers are doing it tough, both financially and emotionally. They face the reality of no money, no income, no food or water for livestock and limited support from the government. There needs to be change. Feed the Farmers Fun Run was a perfect chance to lace up those runners and hit the Chinchilla pavements for an afternoon out with your family and friends. Congratulations to Jennie Downham and her team of helpers, who should be very proud of bringing this event to Chinchilla. Their passion and enthusiasm to bring awareness to everyone in Chinchilla regarding this situation is inspiring and so typical of that great Aussie bush spirit. A Big â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Thank youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; goes to all energetic and passionate individuals who signed up and made the commitment to raise muchneeded funds. A total of 81 runners, including 21 children (and a couple of dogs) all determined to make a difference, took part in the 5 km run/walk in support of drought-affected farmers across Queensland and managed to raise a stunning $1661. From the Editor Babies, babies everywhere! Especially in our office at the moment; Amelia, who has been designing the Jandowae Mill and Miles Lily for us, is now on maternity leave for a year. We wish her the best of luck and we will miss her happy face in the office. On a positive note though, Amy is back! Seems she couldn’t stay away from us and has joined us as a freelancer, taking on the Dalby Harvest and the Tara & District Magazine. I will be on maternity leave myself from next month, but as there is no rest for the wicked, I will be back for the July Editions. In the meantime Kate, Karel and Amy will be holding the fort here at the office. We have a some wonderful events covered in this month’s edition and keep an eye out in next month’s magazine for our Chinchilla Show Feature! Thank you to all the wonderful local businesses who have come on board already to support this feature and allow the Show to be advertised in such detail. We have some brilliant events on, not just in the local area but further afield; the Hampton Festival, the Dalby Picnic Races, the Jandowae Timbertown Festival, the Burrandowan Races as well as Chinchilla’s own, Make It, Grow It, Love It Festival! Steve Cook, recent winner of a “Golden Fiddle Award” at Tamworth, plays mandolin, banjo, and fiddle. Completing the trio is Brisbane born Kristin Kelly; this talented and tasty fiddler has travelled the world learning many different folk styles before settling in Ireland for a few years to form the Barleyshakes and really get to know the Celtic style.

Community Back to Black – Showcasing Local Arts and Crafts The month of May at the Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery will celebrate the diverse talent of our local artists and craftworkers. The exhibition, entitled ‘Back to Black’, explores the colour black in all its glory: in paint, in printmaking, in fabric art, in embroidery. In fact, in any visual art medium. Artworks on display will have a minimum of 25% black derivative or its tones, such as Paynes Grey or Blue Black, in its colour scheme. The rest of the artwork can be whatever hue the artist or craftworker so desires!

Kids on Tour The Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery is pleased to bring the latest ‘Kids on Tour’ activities from the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art. Artist, Cai Guo-Qiang, whose exhibition ‘Falling Back to Earth’ is currently on display at the Gallery of Modern Art, has developed several creative activities specifically for kids. He invites kids to create their own trees, boats, and animals. There is an opportunity for bridge building with bamboo. As well as artwork, kids can view some of Cai Guo-Qiang’s work on video and read a book about his life as a child. The activities will be available for free at the Kids’ Creative Corner for the month of April. No bookings necessary! All you need is a kid and a parent!

The exhibition is not just about showcasing artworks. It is also about enabling our local community artisans to experience Art Gallery life, by being taken on a journey through the processes needed to have an exhibition. This process included information about the Art Gallery, how to submit an exhibition proposal, and finally, detailing works and writing an Artist’s Statement and CV. All of these details are Art Gallery Happenings included in the exhibition catalogue.

Have you noticed that we are trialling new Gallery opening hours? The influx of volunteers for front desk duties has enabled us to extend into Tuesday nights (7am to 9pm) and Sundays (10am to 2pm). So if you don’t have time to visit us during the week, then try the weekend or on Tuesday nights. Eight local artists turned up for the first meeting of the emerging Artists’ Group. We talked about our art and where we would like to be in five years’ time, artistically, of course! The group meets every fourth Tuesday night at the gallery at 7pm. The Chinchilla Historical Society volunteers are wanting to encourage more families and organizations to use the facilities that the Museum has to offer. Part of this process is the renovations to the very old kitchen; we are in the process of installing an all stainless steel semi commercial kitchen, for those who hire the facilities. This upgrade will enable catering to be done on site.

Out & About Pelican Cup Show

The Pelican Rural Fire Brigade successfully combined its Annual Pelican Cup Show and Shine & Car Boot Sale with the Centenary of the Pelican Hall. Mighty fine weather was given from above to Pelican Hall, 888 Burra Burri Creek Road, Pelican (cca 30kms N/E of Chinchilla town) on Saturday, 22nd March and many grabbed an opportunity to be a part of the 3rd edition of this annual event. The day kicked off at 8 am, running until 2 pm and was jampacked with things to do and see. A lovely photo display of abundant history, around the Hall, was put together thanks to the community’s input. Prizes for the best three photos were awarded to Nancy Dolbel, Lina Sells and Beryl Bell. Well done, ladies! Multi-draw raffle, home made crafty stalls and bargain car boot sale were also a big part of the day. Kids definitely got very busy jumping on a massive jumping castle and most could not resist taking a peacock feather or two home. Classic cars rolled in for an event that offered something for car enthusiasts, young and old. Chinchilla Auto & Motor Group also supported the fundraiser for the local Rural Fire Brigade, by polishing and bringing a few cars to the show. It gave all the participating members an excellent chance to take their cars on the road and to show them off, just because they’re not ordinary “daily” cars. The vehicles spread out across the grass and were judged as Pelican Cup People’s Choice. Trophy category included Best Car and Best Ute. First prize was presented to George Lattimore and his 1953 Black Ford Customline, Scot Hordern and his yellow 1973 XB Falcon Fairmont Coupe came second with Cameron Gray and his blue 1967 Chev Impala taking home third prize.

Roy Wood’s blue 1965 XP Falcon Ute was awarded as Best Ute. It was a great event for the whole family and it was nice to take a step back and enjoy the day out of town where there was something for everyone. Organisers are hoping to get bigger next year. If you have a Classic car you would love to show to the world, please join in. You don’t have to be a member of a car club to enter. Everyone is welcome! Aja O’Leary

Upcoming Events 2014 Burrandowan Picnic Races One event that makes the most of the dry weather is racing – and racing is in the air at this time of year! In May, there is one place to be with your hat and jacket – Burrandowan Picnic Races on Saturday 10th May. One of the few traditional picnic race meetings left in southern Queensland, Burrandowan’s bush setting is the perfect backdrop for a great weekend. Kicking off the day with the clay target shoot at 9am, many have also moved into their campsites well before lunchtime, setting up prime location for people watching – oh, and to see the horses. The five race program and interstate betting give you a great chance to survey the horses and make a bet, while the Fashions of the Field provide entertainment and are easy on the eye between the races. Burrandowan race club president, Brendan McCormack, loves race day – the culmination of a year’s work. “Our voluntary committee spend the year planning the day and it comes around quickly and we love seeing people from the city and the bush having a fabulous time,” he explained. “It’s a great day out with friends and family – people come back year after year knowing the atmosphere is fantastic and they will really enjoy themselves. “The only downside to the day is how quickly the evening comes along, so then it’s time to get your steak at cook it on the pit fired barbecues – don’t forget your barbecue tools!” The band Stunt Pig, will again play crowd favourites to keep you dancing well into the night; the dance floor is one for the stars! Well, is under a million stars, anyway! Bring something warm for the evening as the race track temperature is beautiful by day but cold in the evening when you stop dancing or move away from the fires. There are plenty of food outlets from local community groups, and please don’t bring BYO alcohol – the Durong South State School P&C will be on hand serving cold beer, bubbles and your favourite mix. Arrive in plenty of time to enjoy all the action and bring your swag as camping is free on Saturday night. Gardening Tips for April

Dalby Quilting and Applique Club is very pleased to announce that international quilter and artist Gloria Loughman is coming to Dalby on the 17 and 18th May to conduct a workshop ‘Light Up Your Landscape’.

This is a good time of year to start preparing for winter and spring flowers, bulbs and vegetables. Hyacinth, ranunculus, daffodil and jonquil bulbs can all be planted in April. To get them growing as quickly as possible, feed them with a specialised fertiliser such as Yates Bulb Food at planting time to give them an extra boost.

Although based in Australia, Gloria spends most of her teaching time overseas where her workshops are highly sought after. Gloria has not taught in this area before and we are pleased to offer all quilters and/ or patchworkers the opportunity to learn new techniques and styles including fusing, invisible machine applique, free motion stitching and quilting techniques. Participants will be able to design their own wall hanging working from a photo, sketch or picture. The workshop is suitable for new and experienced quilters. The cost for the two day workshop will be $75 and you are encouraged to book early as there will be limited places. The DQAC is able to bring Gloria to Dalby and offer these reduced rates thanks to a grant from the Regional Arts Development Fund. The Dalby Quilting and Applique Club meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month with morning tea at 9.30am and a meeting to follow at 10am above Anthony’s Fabrics. We welcome new and interested sewers. Many of our members have a great wealth of experience which they are always willing to share.

April is also a good time to sow foxglove, delphinium, cornflower and calendula seeds. Pansies, violas and lobelias can be planted now as well and look beautiful in hanging baskets to add a burst of colour. Vegetables to plant this month include: broad beans, snow peas, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, onions, parsnip and spinach. To avoid fruit fly, don’t forget to hang a fruit fly trap nearby to your vegetable garden and citrus trees. Also, to prevent brown rot fungus, remove all mummified fruit from stone fruit trees and spray with Bordeaux mixture at leaf fall. As water supplies are diminishing due to the severe drought that we are experiencing, it is important to take the appropriate steps to ensure your garden is able to retain as much moisture as possible. Always keep your gardens well mulched with a good quality mulch such as Sugarcane, Tea Tree, Lucerne or Cypress Mulch. Not only will this assist with water retention, but it will also prevent weeds from growing. Eco-hydrate and Penetraide can also be watered on to help with deep water penetration.

Business Justin Ma – Wedding Photographer Raised in the small city of Townsville, North QLD, Justin has been based in Brisbane for the past 9 years and travels Australia wide and internationally as a professional photographer. His work has been mainly focussed on fashion, photojournalism, portraiture and weddings. “I love many areas of photography. Before any photoshoot Justin always tries to get to know the client and what they would like to get out of the photos. This is very important to achieve photos that are unique and personal. It is also good way to help the client relax as most of the time it will be their first experience in front of a camera. He doesn’t like to do photos that are too over posed, he tries to keep the photos as natural as possible and will always help by giving direction, “All photos require at least a tiny bit of posing, however I try to keep it as relaxed as I can. Education Kokoda Challenge 2014 has started with groans and sore muscles for Chinchilla State High School’s Kokoda Challengers, as they start their preparation for a 30km trek in May. At this stage, there are approximately 20 teams of dedicated students and teachers signed up and registered for the Toowoomba challenge. They have been lucky enough to procure the generous services of Healthy U personal trainer, Amanda Bell, who has designed a rigorous training program to prepare them for the challenges that a 30km hike up and down the Toowoomba range will present. Lunchtime training sessions are being held as well as morning fitness sessions. It has been great to see the number of students regularly attending these sessions and motivating their team members through the many squats, burpees and mountain climbers required! Health & Beauty Urgent Chemical Alert! Your Health is at Serious Risk! Last month I covered the need for adequate sleep and the negative effect it can have on your health, right from your physical wellbeing through to mental health. If you missed this, I encourage you to take a look at last month’s magazine. This month I am putting the spotlight on a very serious issue, preservatives. Now I know that some of you are thinking, “I have heard it all before”, however, this issue is much more wide spread than you think. We are talking about not only food and drink but cleaning products, beauty products, personal care items; anything that can be absorbed, inhaled or ingested might be

putting your health at risk. Preservatives come in many forms, shapes and sizes. They are used to prevent a product from expiring, going off, rotting, or to becoming ineffective. They can be used in food and drink, your shampoo, shaving cream, toothpaste, makeup, dishwashing liquid, soap and just about anything that you consume in your home. In 2013 a study by Anand and Sati called Artificial Preservatives And Their Harmful Effects: Looking Toward Nature For Safer Alternatives was released giving conclusive evidence about the detrimental effects preservatives can have on your health. So you might be asking, “then why is it on our shop shelves?” The answer is simply that there is not enough restrictive laws around our consumables.
