2014 Dalby Show Success! Book out your weekend for next year, because if this year was any indication of what will be on offer in years to come, the Dalby Show is proving to be becoming bigger and better! This years show was definitely different from those of the past! Each year as the show approaches, what automatically springs to mind is exhibitions, dagwood dogs, and sideshow alley. However, this year really had an impressive range of entertainment on offer for all age groups and interests! If sideshow alley really isn’t your thing, then maybe the horse and ring events, young farmer’s challenge, machinery display, show car display, freestyle motocross, demolition derby, aerial dance performance, or a whip cracking slapstick comedy act may have caught your attention ... and this is just to name a few!

Arts Development Fund & Western Downs Regional Council was on offer to the youth of Dalby this year. Over the course of the workshop, the Crackup Sisters worked closely with the participating children in teaching them basic stock whip cracking and knockabout acrobatic skills, in which they were able to demonstrate these new found skills to the general public in Friday nights entertainment. In addition to this, the duo themselves provided entertainment throughout the entire course of Friday keeping the crowds drawn in and well amused, and finishing up with a hilarious performance for the main act on Friday night.

With the Eljay Freestyle Motocross demonstration, Crackup Sisters, Wilde Applause aerial dance performers, young farmers challenge and fireworks, it really was family entertainment at a whole new level! And what a breath of fresh air it was to have so many talents right here on our door step! I think it’s safe to say it was a great weekend had by all.

I must put my hands together for the Crack Up Sisters, who in my opinion, were undoubtably the show stealing act of the weekend! The main focus for this whip cracking female duo, is to promote Australian slapstick comedy and carry on the heritage of Australian stock whip cracking within the youth of regional Australia. With this, Emma Hooke a three day workshop funded by the Regional

Get that footloose feeling Dalby State High School prides itself on presenting professional and entertaining annual musicals, and this year will be no exception. Audiences will be left tapping their toes and humming the familiar tunes of the much loved classic, Footloose. This year’s production is directed by the talented Jeremy Wood. Mr Wood commented that throughout the process, he has been immensely impressed by the dedication and skill of the students “who have worked tirelessly to get this show off the ground.” He has no doubt that “by production week, they will have officially reached showstopper status!” Mr Wood has created a fresh take on this classic story about love, family, rebellion and resilience. Over 100 students are involved in this year’s show and, as always, the school community have banded together to bring the many facets of the musical to life. Chorus members have been creatively challenged by the dynamic dance moves and in true Dalby State High style, they have met this challenge head on. Mr Wood states that “the singing, acting, choreography and energy is outstanding and we cannot wait to share this classic story with our audience!” So come along and be taken for a dance down memory lane from May 20th, 21st, 23rd and 24th. JUSTIN MA – WEDDING/portrait PHOTOGRAPHER Raised in the small city of Townsville, North Queensland, Justin has been based in Brisbane for the past nine years and travels Australia wide and internationally as a professional photographer. His work has been mainly focussed on fashion, photojournalism, portraiture and weddings. “I love many areas of photography. Shooting all these different genres has helped me refine my technical skill as well as shaping my style of work. I always draw and combine inspiration from all genres of photography in my work”. Justin’s first camera was his mum’s 1982 Nikon FG, coincidentally bought the same year he was born. But it wasn’t until he was in university midway through a psychology degree that he discovered his love for photography as a means for creative expression. It didn’t take him long to then transfer into a Bachelor of Photography which he graduated from after three years. As soon as he completed his degree, he moved down to Brisbane to pursue work and since then he has visited many places around Australia and the world with his photography. His first photography job was in a portrait studio in Brisbane. This is where he honed his skills from photographing everything from individual portraits, glamour, modelling folios, budoir, couples and families. This gave Justin the experience and confidence to soon establish his own photography business. At first he focussed mainly on fashion photography and photojournalism, but then soon realised he could combine both these styles in photographing couples and weddings. “The thing I love about photographing couples and weddings is that I get to draw inspiration from a lot of different other areas of photography. I like to keep my work as fresh and modern as possible as this is what I have found a lot of my clients enjoy.”

He doesn’t like to do photos that are too over posed, he tries Justin Ma to keep the photos as natural as possible and will always help by giving direction. “All photos require at least a tiny bit of posing, however I try to keep it as relaxed as I can. Especially when photographing couples, it’s all about capturing the little moments that show their connections with one another.” He also likes to shoot on location, as a studio setting can be too intimidating and artificial looking for a lot of people. With any of Justin’s photo packages you will receive magazine quality edited high resolution images on disc of the best shots from the day. He also offers prints, framing and personalised hardcover photo books.

U3A Dalby has a busy month coming up with a Mother’s Day Morning tea on Friday May 9 and a bus trip to Millmerran on May 11.

Saint Columba’s Convent, in Cunningham Street, was built thirty-six years after the Sisters of Mercy, first arrived in Dalby. Sister Mary Rose, Sister Mary Beatrice, Sister Francis and Sister Ligouri had arrived by train in 1877 they came for the love of God and the Spiritual formation of the children. Many more Sisters were to contribute to the Spiritual teaching during the life of the building.

The morning tea will be held at the Dalby Senior Citizen’s Centre stating at 10.30am. Admission is by a gold coin, which will be donated to the Queensland Cancer Council as part of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. There will also be a raffle and lucky door prize. The highlight will be judging of the best teapot, cup and saucer and the best item associated with smoko. Prizes for tea pots and cups and saucers will be awarded for the prettiest, funniest and most unusual. Entries need to be nominated by 9.30am on the day. Entertainment will include poetry written by Joy Shields. Everyone is welcome and a plate of morning tea to share would be appreciated. On the Sunday, May 11 there will be a trip to Millmerran Cultural Centre for the concert ‘Dustier than Ever’. This free concert starts at 2.30pm and features the unforgettable hits of Aussie country music icon Slim Dusty sung by Chris Cook.

Recently, the members of the Pioneer Park Museum & Vintage Machinery Association of Dalby were invited to exhibit their vintage engines, tractors and trucks at the Bell, Jandowae and Dalby Shows. First was the Bell Show on 2nd March and a very good roll up of the machinery widely used for farm chores were to be seen working doing the jobs they were made for, giving the present generation of farmers an insight to see how mechanisation took over from the horse and how work on the land became quick and easier. Then on the 22nd March, it was Jandowae’s turn to stage their annual Show. Again, the members exhibited their old machines to the delight of show patrons. The scene repeated as at Bell, with young farmers inquiring about how the engines were started, and how they performed under load for the various tasks such as pumping water for stock, sheep shearing and crutching, power

Funds are raised to the Public Rural Crisis Fund (PRCF), by fundraising and tax deductible donations, and ALL funds are used to provide assistance to families suffering from natural disasters. This year, Kogan and Dalby promoters have come together to run a “Buckle Series” and the local riders did not disappoint promoters at the Series first event of the year, the event was well attended with many local riders from the region as well as riders who came from Sunshine and Gold Coast regions, along with riders from Warwick and Rosewood to compete in the Open, Junior, Beginner and 5 to 10 classes as well as the Pole Bending event. 2014 will see a buckle series held at the Dalby Indoor Arena and Redrock Park, Kogan, riders will ride for the chance to win a “Ridetuff” buckle in the Open and Junior 1st , 2nd , 3rd and 4th Divisions and the 5 to 10 Ridden class. All full members of the NBHA are eligible to win the buckles, made by Ridetuff Buckles, Australia’s premier buckle makers. A total of six events will be run at these venues and riders will earn points at all six to decide the Series Winners. To kick the series off, a Maximum point event was held on March 15th followed by a Minimum point event on the 16th, breaking the tradition of a Mare Monolopy, the geldings came through for their riders with the exception of a couple of placings. The Maximum point event saw Dalby cowgirl Janene Hughes and her awesome little grey gelding Alfie take out the 1st division, with Warwick rider Paula Donovan coming second, Warra Local Shelly Frame on her big black gelding Heza Quik Scooter took out first place in the 2nd Division followed by Beaudesert’s Amy Knox, 3rd division was won by Chinchilla’s Amy Dolbel on the gelding she calls Chook followed by another Chinchilla local Kellie Johnson, 4th Division went to Tara’s Lisa Hall on her little Arab mare Lara, followed closely by International visitor Simone Matzler. Easter FUNDRAISER at Our Lady of the Southern Cross College Our Lady of the Southern Cross College’s Mini Vinnies recently took on the challenge to raise funds for Dalby’s St Vincent de Paul chapter, to help in its vision to offer a hand up to people in need. The Mini Vinnies arranged each of the College’s families to donate Easter eggs to the cause. These eggs were then wrapped up into 90 prize packs which were raffled, eventually raising an impressive $900.00. Prizes were presented at a College Easter liturgy on Wednesday, 2nd April. Common colds are respiratory tract infections caused by viruses. Medicines can relieve symptoms, but cannot cure the common cold. A vaccine and some antiviral medicines can protect against influenza. Antibiotics are not effective against these viral infections.

Julie moved to the area this year with her family from the Gold Coast. She has been a photographer for 14 years, shooting over 500 weddings. She was also a water skier at Sea World for over 15 years. Together with water skiing, photography and journalism are her passions.
