Dalby Dads Read Family Fun Day Dalby Dads Read Family Fun Day had been as anticipated as a birthday, Christmas or Easter with much counting down of ‘sleeps’ – in my household at least! With two excited four-year-olds in tow, we set off for a mega morning of storytelling, dancing, music and rhyme, arts and crafts, giant games and multimedia adventures at Dalby’s new arts precinct, MyALL 107.

A Note From the Editor Babies, babies everywhere! Especially in our office at the moment; Amelia, who has been designing the Jandowae Mill and Miles Lily for us, is now on maternity leave for a year. We wish her the best of luck and we will miss her happy face in the office. On a positive note though, Amy is back! Seems she couldn’t stay away from us and has joined us as a freelancer, taking on the Dalby Harvest and the Tara & District Magazine. I will be on maternity leave myself from next month, Jessica Flynn, Editor but as there is no rest for the wicked, I will be back for the July Editions. In the meantime Kate, Karel and Amy will be holding the fort here at the office. We have a massive Dalby Show Feature in this month’s edition! You can read all about the upcoming Dalby & District Show on pages 21-29 . Thank you to all the wonderful local businesses who supported this feature and allowed the Show to be advertised in such detail. Be sure to head along and support your local show, it’s set to be a fantastic couple of days! The Jandowae Timbertown Festival is also fast approaching; you can read all about the plans for this award winning event on page 16 of this edition, and keep an eye out in next months edition for the full program and details of the Festival. Easter is almost upon us already and we head into school holiday craziness again! So, until next month enjoy reading your Dalby Harvest and hopefully you will manage to catch up with family over the Easter break.

2014 Burrandowan Picnic Races One event that makes the most of the dry weather is racing – and racing is in the air at this time of year! In May, there is one place to be with your hat and jacket – Burrandowan Picnic Races on Saturday 10th May. One of the few traditional picnic race meetings left in southern Queensland, Burrandowan’s bush setting is the perfect backdrop for a great weekend. Kicking off the day with the clay target shoot at 9am, many have also moved into their campsites well before lunchtime, setting up prime location for people watching – oh, and to see the horses. By first race, the atmosphere has always built up – there are fabulous hats, sharp suits, high heels and laughter all around as young and old gather of a great day of racing.

Saturday 10th May 2014

Picnic tables are out, the Clovely bubbles are flowing, and the food stalls do brisk business. The five race program and interstate betting give you a great chance to survey the horses and make a bet, while the Fashions of the Field provide entertainment and are easy on the eye between the races. Burrandowan race club president, Brendan McCormack, loves race day – the culmination of a year’s work. “Our voluntary committee spend the year planning the day and it comes around quickly and we love seeing people from the city and the bush having a fabulous time,” he explained. “It’s a great day out with friends and family – people come back year after year knowing the atmosphere is fantastic and they will really enjoy themselves. “The only downside to the day is how quickly the evening comes along, so then it’s time to get your steak at cook it on the pit fired barbecues – don’t forget your barbecue tools!” The band Stunt Pig, will again play crowd favourites to keep you dancing well into the night; the dance floor is one for the stars! Well, is under a million stars, anyway! Bring something warm for the evening as the race track temperature is beautiful by day but cold in the evening when you stop dancing or move away from the fires. There are plenty of food outlets from local community groups, and please don’t bring BYO alcohol – the Durong South State School P&C will be on hand serving cold beer, bubbles and your favourite mix. Arrive in plenty of time to enjoy all the action and bring your swag as camping is free on Saturday night. To get to the race track, head to Durong, and follow the signs to Burrandowan Road off the Chinchilla Wondai Road. Ladies and gents, make sure you dress to impress as Fashions on the Field will once again take place. House Competition Dalby Christian College regards their House Competition as something more than a sporting opportunity. With College house teams – Judson, Carey and Taylor – three separate events each term of the school year are held to encourage a feeling amongst the students of belonging in a community, being a part of something greater than themselves and an appreciation of the value of teamwork. College students have participated in two such events this term, with one more to come in the last week before Easter holidays. The College Swimming Carnival was held during the second week of term. Although it was great to see some students display their swimming talent, it was also good to see other students who found swimming difficult, participate in the novelty events like the Ping Pong Grab and the Surfboard Relay. The students also showed good sportsmanship, often encouraging swimmers of other houses as they finished the race. House team Judson came out in front of Taylor with Carey bringing up the rear in the final points tally. The second House Competition of the term, The War Cry, was held during week 6. This event involved each house performing their practised war cries before a panel of judges. Performances were judged on overall participation, clarity of the war cry and general creativity. Deputy Principal, Jeromy Wainwright, said, “The purpose of the war cry competition is to instil house spirit in the students. Through developing house spirit, students learn the importance of being a part of something bigger Top: Swimming chear   Left: Judson war cry   than themselves. Raise Your Cup and Celebrate Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea SLIP on your glad rags. SLOP on some sunscreen. SLAP on a hat, but not any old hat, because you are invited to the Mad Hatter’s Biggest Morning Tea in the Wonderland at Jimbour House on May 4. Then SLURP on a cuppa – figuratively speaking of course. Help make Dalby’s contribution to Australia’s biggest fundraiser for the fight against cancer mad and memorable with an imaginative creation for your head. Even better if it’s sun safe! Be as mad as a March Hare (or should it be May?) to be eligible for cash prizes generously donated by Mr Bill Fitzsimmons of Fitzsimmons Real Estate. A gold coin entry fee will allow you to compete in the adult or child section of the Mad Hatte’rs Challenge. But, if you aren’t mad or creative, just slap on a hat anyway to be stylish and sun safe. Sunscreen too! In 2013, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea raised its largest amount in its 20 year history -more than $12.6 million dollars countrywide. Owing to the support and generosity of residents of Dalby and the surrounding districts, the Dalby Cancer Council branch was able to contribute $11 000 towards this total. This money is vital to support patients and their families, to provide accommodation as well as fund education and research. And of course, more money is always needed! One out of every two of us will contract cancer at some time in our lives by the time we are 85, and we all know it has no respect for age. A quick fact check shows that funds raised to date have meant that the survival rate of cancer patients is increasing, and research has shown that if we make the right lifestyle choices, 30% of cancers can be avoided.

Cancer Council volunteer, Betty Barton shows off her hat for the Mad Hatters Challenge and admires Robyn Buckley's impression of a waterfall at the Bunya Mountains. The painting is to be raffled with the winner being drawn at the Mad Hatters Biggest Morning Tea. Once you step into the Wonderland, you’ll be able to browse the market stalls, purchase sweet treats whipped up by the local ladies, be entertained by a variety of artists or simply bask in the autumn sunshine and chat with your friends. For those who want a little more March Hare Madness, have your face painted, frolic on the jumping castle or pose at the Fun Foto Factorie. After a feast of winter fashion presented by Noni B, finish your party with the barbecue when you’ll be able to nibble on sausages or burgers for lunch.

Gardening Tips for April This is a good time of year to start preparing for winter and spring flowers, bulbs and vegetables. Hyacinth, ranunculus, daffodil and jonquil bulbs can all be planted in April. To get them growing as quickly as possible, feed them with a specialised fertiliser such as Yates Bulb Food at planting time to give them an extra boost. April is also a good time to sow foxglove, delphinium, cornflower and calendula seeds. Pansies, violas and lobelias can be planted now as well and look beautiful in hanging baskets to add a burst of colour. Vegetables to plant this month include broad beans, snow peas, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, onions, parsnip and spinach. To avoid fruit flies, don’t forget to hang a fruit fly trap nearby to your vegetable garden and citrus trees. Also to prevent brown rot fungus, remove all mummified fruit from stone fruit trees and spray with Bordeaux mixture at leaf fall. As water supplies are diminishing due to the severe drought that we are experiencing, it is important to take the appropriate steps to ensure your garden is able to retain as much moisture as possible. Always keep your gardens well mulched with a good quality mulch such as Sugarcane, Tea Tree, Lucerne or Cypress Mulch, not only will this assist with water retention but it will also prevent weeds from growing. Eco-hydrate and Penetraide can also be watered on to help with deep water penetration. For more gardening tips and advice be sure to visit the team at Dalby Landscape & Home Garden Supplies. Asthma Asthma is an inflammatory disorder of the airways that makes breathing difficult. It affected more than two million Australians. Asthma can be well controlled with medication, allowing a person with asthma to live a normal and active life, free of symptoms. People with asthma have sensitive airways in their lungs. When exposed to certain triggers, the muscles around the airways tighten, the lining of the airways becomes inflamed and swollen and extra mucus is secreted, resulting in narrower air passages and difficulties with breathing. SYMPTOMS • A dry cough, especially at night, early in the morning and with exercise or activity • Wheezing or whistling sound with breathing • Breathlessness • Chest tightness A person with asthma may have one or more of these symptoms. TRIGGERS There are many triggers for asthma and they can differ for each person. Some known triggers include: • • • • • • •

Urgent Chemical Alert! Your Health is at Serious Risk! Last month I covered the need for adequate sleep and the negative effect it can have on your health, right from your physical wellbeing through to mental health. If you missed this, I encourage you to take a look at last month’s magazine. This month I am putting the spotlight on a very serious issue, preservatives. Now I know that some of you are thinking, “I have heard it all before”, however, this issue is much more wide spread than you think. We are talking about not only food and drink but cleaning products, beauty products, personal care items; anything that can be absorbed, inhaled or ingested

might be putting your health at risk. Preservatives come in many forms, shapes and sizes. They are used to prevent a product from expiring, going off, rotting, or to becoming ineffective. They can be used in food and drink, your shampoo, shaving cream, toothpaste, makeup, dishwashing liquid, soap and just about anything that you consume in your home. In 2013 a study by Anand and Sati called Artificial Preservatives And Their Harmful Effects: Looking Toward Nature For Safer Alternatives was released giving conclusive evidence about the detrimental effects preservatives can have on your health. So you might be asking, “then why is it on our shop shelves?” The answer is simply that there is not enough restrictive laws around our consumables. The study revealed a number of harmful side effects but the most alarming was that “preservatives such as nitrates, benzoates, sulfites, sorbates, parabens, formaldehyde, BHT, BHA and several others can cause serious health hazards such as hypersensitivity, allergy, asthma, hyperactivity, neurological damage and cancer.” “In young children temper tantrums and disruptive behaviour” were observed. As well as “the use of these toxic chemicals by pregnant

women may adversely affect foetal brain development.” “Toxins like these can cause DNA damage to sperm”. Although it doesn’t stop there, other causes include “severe allergic reactions and exacerbation of asthma”; “neurological damage in rats”; skin, eye and lung irritation and allergies. However, there is a silver lining; the study also concluded that “natural preservatives offer greater advantages over their artificial counterparts due to their non-toxic nature along with a wide range of health benefits.” With BioGro’s Organic Certification you can guarantee that the products you purchase from Chanzar Organics are free of chemical preservatives. Instead we use air tight food grade tubes to store our products which reduces the need for preservatives entirely. Start looking through your home and begin eliminating things with ingredients such as sorbate, butylate, propionate and the big one PARABEN! If you would like to replace these products with safe certified organic products then contact Chanzar Organics on 0467 467 645 or head to our web store www. worldorganic.com.au/chanzar Chantahl Stedman Chanzar Organics

Ask OptomTom Your questions answered by the experts at Eyecare Eyewear

Question: Will orthoK lenses stop me from becoming more shortsighted? Orthokeratology is the custom hard contact lens treatment where the front of the eye is reshaped from overnight wear. The usual result is clear sight without the need for glasses during the day. Recently a further study has been published demonstrating a greater than 50% reduction in growth of the axial length of the eye with this treatment. An increase in axial length is one of the main reasons for progression in myopia or shortsightedness. In summary, no treatment approach can guarantee that a patient’s optical prescription with stabilize. However, orthokeratology is the closest thing we as optometrist have ever had to this Holy Grail. In my opinion, this should be the first correction option offered to any patient who is becoming more shortsighted. Got a question for OpTomTom?
