Bell Show
1st & 2nd March
2014 Bell Show was a great weekend for all. Good numbers came through the gates on both days to see the many attractions of this year’s show. The new kid’s alley was a big hit with many getting their faces painted and interacting with the farm animals.
Saturday evening saw the Crack Up Sisters entertain the crowd with audience left in stitches of laughter with the performance. They were followed by the Memphis Moovers. The night saw a big crowd kicking their heels up on the dance floor. On Sunday the Cowboys took on the Bulls to see who could last the eight seconds. What a great day! Bell Show Society were very happy with the weekend and would like to thank the countless volunteers that make the show a great weekend for all. Bell Show Society

A Note From The Editor Babies, babies everywhere! Especially in our office at the moment; Amelia, who has been designing the Jandowae Mill and Miles Lily for us, is now on maternity leave for a year. We wish her the best of luck and we will miss her happy face in the office. On a positive note though, Amy is back! Seems she couldn’t stay away from us and has joined us as a freelancer, taking on the Dalby Harvest and the Tara & District Magazine. I will be on maternity leave myself from next month, but as there is no rest for the wicked, I will be back for the July Editions. In the Jessica Flynn, Editor meantime Kate, Karel and Amy will be holding the fort here at the office. This month we bring you a wrap up of both the Bell and Jandowae Shows, which were both a success from all reports. There are plenty of upcoming events to fill your social calendars also, including both the Burrandowan and Dalby Picnic Races, and local events such as the Jandowae Quiz Night and the Anglican PreMother’s Day Bazaar. You will find details of all these events within! The Jandowae Timbertown Festival is also fast approaching; you can read about the plans for this award winning event on page 10 of this edition, and keep an eye out in next month’s edition for the full program and details of the Festival. Easter is almost upon us and we head into school holiday craziness again! So, until next month enjoy reading your Jandowae Mill, and I hope you will manage to catch up with family over the Easter break..

QCWA Warra Branch Turns 90 QCWA Warra Branch celebrated their 90th Birthday in style with High Tea on Saturday, 15th March. The Warra Memorial Hall was beautifully decorated with memorabilia, scrapbooks chronicling the Branch history, an amazing display of hats, tables set with exquisite fine china, and an amazing assortment of delicate cakes and sandwiches. Many members and past members were in attendance, and the Warra community also showed their support for the local QCWA ladies. ‘Congratulations’ from Maranoa Division. Millingwood Sawmill in the Spotlight Millingwood is the answer to the quiz last month. The clues do fit. Timber = wood, processing = milling. It was often referred to as the Darr Creek Mill because of its location on the banks of the aforementioned creek. For any interested readers, the old mill was situated to the right of the main road heading north towards Durong, just before the road crosses Darr Creek. A few items of memorabilia are still scattered over the area where the mill and its collection of houses once stood. Two brothers, George and Ernie Kowitz (Bert missed out) opened the mill in 1930. Apparently, the name was suggested by one of the wives because of the great stand of milling trees in the area. Active Anglicans Active Anglicans continue with community services, groups and ministry in the local community. The recent transfer of our regular Minister of some years now, Reverend Major David Snape has created a few hiccups in our regular service times and expectations. We are still able to participate in all other affairs though and enjoyed the World Day of Prayer, country of reflection Egypt, service held at the Catholic Church in Hickey Street. Thank you for the company and hospitality. We are still able to obtain coverage for special needs such baptism, marriage and funerals of course. Currently church services are 9am, first and third Sundays at St Paul's Jandowae for prayer service. The next full communion will be on Sunday 6th April 9am, with Reverend Fred Ailwood, at the baptism of infant Ruby Black. The family welcome all to the celebratory refreshments which will follow.

Note: although Anglicare do not have an office in Jandowae we can take enquiries and look at circumstances for which Anglicare may be able to provide support. Some of our parishioners and many others have suffered greatly in the recent droughty times. Sadness and desperation for many. Hope raises itself in these milder, damp days. We pray the rain we are getting will revive spirits once more.
Later in the year we will have another participating community function, which will be as fun as ever but quite what we haven't decided at this stage. The Western Region said farewell to Rt. Reverend Bishop Rob at the end of February. He is definitely retiring for a few months but hopes to be on the 'relieving roster' some time in the future, so we may expect to catch up with him again. 2014 Burrandowan Picnic Races One event that makes the most of the dry weather is racing – and racing is in the air at this time of year! In May, there is one place to be with your hat and jacket – Burrandowan Picnic Races on Saturday 10th May. One of the few traditional picnic race meetings left in southern Queensland, Burrandowan’s bush setting is the perfect backdrop for a great weekend. Kicking off the day with the clay target shoot at 9am, many have also moved into their campsites well before lunchtime, setting up prime location for people watching – oh, and to see the horses. By first race, the atmosphere has always built up – there are fabulous hats, sharp suits, high heels and laughter all around as young and old gather of a great day of racing.
Saturday 10th May 2014
Picnic tables are out, the Clovely bubbles are flowing, and the food stalls do brisk business. The five race program and interstate betting give you a great chance to survey the horses and make a bet, while the Fashions of the Field provide entertainment and are easy on the eye between the races. Burrandowan race club president, Brendan McCormack, loves race day – the culmination of a year’s work. “Our voluntary committee spend the year planning the day and it comes around quickly and we love seeing people from the city and the bush having a fabulous time,” he explained. “It’s a great day out with friends and family – people come back year after year knowing the atmosphere is fantastic and they will really enjoy themselves. “The only downside to the day is how quickly the evening comes along, so then it’s time to get your steak at cook it on the pit fired barbecues – don’t forget your barbecue tools!” The band Stunt Pig, will again play crowd favourites to keep you dancing well into the night; the dance floor is one for the stars! Well, is under a million stars, anyway! Bring something warm for the evening as the race track temperature is beautiful by day but cold in the evening when you stop dancing or move away from the fires. There are plenty of food outlets from local community groups, and please don’t bring BYO alcohol – the Durong South State School P&C will be on hand serving cold beer, bubbles and your favourite mix. Arrive in plenty of time to enjoy all the action and bring your swag as camping is free on Saturday night. To get to the race track, head to Durong, and follow the signs to Burrandowan Road off the Chinchilla Wondai Road. "That's Life" Community Health Initiative Local community groups from Miles, Tara and Chinchilla are banding together to show their support for our communities with the “That’s Life” Health event. This is set to be held from the 29th - 31st May, 2014 in recognition of National Men’s Health Week. It is no secret that life in our regional communities can be, and has been, tough. The changing industry landscape, significant long term swings in weather patterns impacting our farming productivity and lifestyles, and everyday life stresses are testament to this. With this in mind, it is important that we, as a community, support both the physical and mental health of not only men, but also the women and children
within our communities. “That’s Life” will be an entertaining and FREE evening for the entire community to participate in, by increasing awareness and education about Mental Health in our communities. Come along and grab a bite from the BBQ, find out what our local community organisations, sporting and recreational groups and service clubs have to offer, test yourself with our Mini Health Checks and be inspired by ABC Sports Broadcaster, Craig Hamilton’s amazing journey in his experience with Bipolar 1 disorder. Naomi Black’s Dad, Ray Humphrys, will give us a talk about his work. He is the Historian for the Bunya Mountains. Lorraine Liste ended her talk at our February meeting, by handing out packets of seeds and a Vege Seed Catalogue. Lorraine spoke about the “Passive Solar House” that she has built in Toowoomba. The house has rammed earth walls on the eastern and western sides as well as the entry, and an internal rammed earth spine runs the length of the house. The remainder of the walls are of Colorbond iron, used vertically. The roof is zinc alum. The floors are polished concrete with ceramic tiles in the bathrooms. Specific attention was paid to the orientation of the house, the size of the windows and the insulation, so that maximum benefit could be gained from the sun. The house is not a big house (3 bedrooms), but has some specially customised design features and is built with wheelchair and disability access in mind.

Many hanging baskets, filled with Zygo Cactus and Fushia, hang from the roof of the carport. The back door of the house faces west and is guarded by an elephant statue. The cemented area, along the back of the house, has several potted plants, including large Bush Lemon trees. The southern side fence is lined with Lilly Pilly. The back garden has a large expanse of green grass dotted with advanced trees, such as Race horse and Gums. A circular garden to one side has a Moreton Bay Fig tree at its centre. Several trees have features around their base, such as an angel statue with heart shaped bird feeders hanging from the branches. Another tree has a statue of doves. A garden windmill works hard pumping water into a miniature tank. The back fence is lined with dark pink Bougainvillea, with young Jacaranda trees growing in front.

Gardening Tips For April This is a good time of year to start preparing for winter and spring flowers, bulbs and vegetables. Hyacinth, ranunculus, daffodil and jonquil bulbs can all be planted in April. To get them growing as quickly as possible, feed them with a specialised fertiliser such as Yates Bulb Food at planting time to give them an extra boost. April is also a good time to sow foxglove, delphinium, cornflower and calendula seeds. Pansies, violas and lobelias can be planted now as well and look beautiful in hanging baskets to add a burst of colour. Vegetables to plant this month include: broad beans, snow peas, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, onions, parsnip and spinach. To avoid fruit fly, don’t forget to hang a fruit fly trap nearby to your vegetable garden and citrus trees. Also, to prevent brown rot fungus, remove all mummified fruit from stone fruit trees and spray with Bordeaux mixture at leaf fall. As water supplies are diminishing due to the severe drought that we are experiencing, it is important to take the appropriate steps to ensure your garden is able to retain as much moisture as possible. Always keep your gardens well mulched with a good quality mulch such as Sugarcane, Tea Tree, Lucerne or Cypress Mulch; not only will this assist with water retention but it will also prevent weeds from growing. Eco-hydrate and Penetraide can also be watered on to help with deep water penetration. For more gardening tips and advice, be sure to visit the team at Dalby Landscape & Home Garden Supplies. Jandowae State School The last weeks of school have arrived to complete Term One. Much has happened this term. The Great Results Guarantee was introduced early in the term, with its aim to have either every child provided the opportunity to meet the National literacy and numeracy benchmarks, or have in place, an evidenced based plan that supports the development of literacy and numeracy for that individual. The school leaders completed their camp at Warwick. These students were exposed to a range of challenging activities that required skill development in team work and decision making. The School Wide Positive Behaviour Support program is celebrating its first groups of students who have met their targets. These students have gained tokens, throughout the term, for their excellent behaviours at school.

It has been an action packed month at Jandowae Kindergarten! Just last week, we welcomed our Grandparents to our Kindy to participate in morning experiences, sharing their ideas, skills and love. Special thanks to Cathy and Bianca for having the courage to read stories in front of us all. This year, we asked our Grandparents to bring along their ‘favourite recipes’ to share. These recipes will serve as wonderful learning tools as we further explore the relationships children share with grandparents; as well as using them to explore early concepts associated with literacy, maths and science as we read, measure, pour, stir and add heat. We’d like to thank everyone for coming along and making the day so much fun for the children!
tools in developing children’s early literacy knowledge and awareness. The children re-told the story of ‘The Three Bears’ using the felt board. We have also explored the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and came up with our own series of events, using alternative materials for building houses. Reading ‘Cinderella’ provided us with an idea for our Show Pumpkin Carriage, where we were awarded 3rd place for our efforts!
Our student display at the Jandowae Show was again reported as excellent by many visitors, while our Year Six, Jay Purcival-McDonald, performed an excellent rendition of the National Anthem at the Show. Our teachers and teacher aides have commenced a variety of lunchtime activities for students, which are proving a big success – the sport rivalry games attract many students from each house to compete in games such as touch. Chaplain Matt is always in big demand!
Senior Constable Alan has already commenced his role with his numerous chats with students and his help with bikes and safety on the roads.
Our children are thoroughly enjoying our new play spaces at Kindy this term, where social skills are actively being explored (sharing, communicating, and cooperating with one another). Jimbour State School News Jimbour State School is producing a new breed of millionaires; thanks to Mrs Megan Cartwright and her Millionaire’s Reading Log which she has instituted this term. Pupils have the opportunity to become rich by reading. “In one year, the pupils can read a million words,” said Mrs Cartwright. “It’s awesome that they can be a word millionaire.” The Millionaire’s Reading Log is a reading challenge - one of the many fantastic things Mrs Cartwright has done to encourage the students to read. “The students have really absorbed her enthusiasm and passion for books,” said one pupil’s mother, Mrs Meg Hansen. “She even had the big boys interested in ‘Alice in Wonderland’! Mrs Cartwright is one of those special people whose enthusiasm is contagious.” Each student keeps a Home Reader Log of how many minutes they have spent reading at home. Each minute equates to $250 Library Dollars, which is recorded in their Reading Bank Book. So, just by reading 10 minutes a day at home, earns $2500; however, pupils are keen to earn much more. At the end of the term, students have an opportunity to spend their Reading Dollars in an exciting way at an Auction, where they can purchase donated items. These items are kept on display in the Library as an incentive to read. “Mrs Cartwright makes reading and school heaps of fun,” said pupil, Nyree Hansen. “She makes up great challenges for reading, like the Millionaire’s Club

Hendra April is Hendra month. Hendra has been found in Queensland and Northern New South Wales. Clinical signs of Hendra disease can include a high temperature, respiratory distress and neurological signs. There is a 100% death rate for horses and a 30% death rate in humans. May to September is the peak time for Hendra disease. There is no known cure so we must take all precautions. A vaccine has been released to registered veterinarians. It is hoped the vaccine will decrease the risk of exposure to horse owners, handlers and veterinarians.

Justin Ma – Wedding Photographer Raised in the small city of Townsville, North QLD, Justin has been based in Brisbane for the past 9 years and travels Australia wide and internationally as a professional photographer. His work has been mainly focussed on fashion, photojournalism, portraiture and weddings. “I love many areas of photography. Shooting all these different genres has helped me refine my technical skill as well as shaping my style of work. I always draw and combine inspiration from all genres of photography in my work”.
Justin Ma – Wedding Photographer
Before any photoshoot Justin always tries to get to know the client and what they would like to get out of the photos. This is very important to achieve photos that are unique and personal. It is also good way to help the client relax as most of the time it will be their first experience in front of a camera. He doesn’t like to do photos that are too over posed, he tries to keep the photos as natural as possible and will always help by giving direction, “All photos require at least a tiny bit of posing, however I try to keep it as relaxed as I can. Especially when photographing couples it’s all about capturing the little moments that show their connections with one another.” He also likes to shoot on location as a studio setting can be too intimidating and artificial looking for a lot of people. With any of Justin’s photo packages you will receive magazine quality edited high resolution images on disc of the best shots from the day. He also offers prints, framing and personalized hardcover photo books.
Justin’s first camera was his mum’s 1982 Nikon FG, coincidentally bought the same year he was born. But it wasn’t until he was in university midway through a psychology degree that he discovered his love for photography as a means for creative expression. It didn’t take him long to then transfer into a Bachelor of Photography which he graduated from after 3yrs. Urgent Chemical Alert! Your Health is at Serious Risk! Last month, I covered the need for adequate sleep and the negative effect it can have on your health right from your physical wellbeing through to mental health. If you missed this, I encourage you to take a look at last month’s magazine. This month, I am putting the spotlight on a very serious issue - preservatives. What a Pain! Of all the conditions we treat with medication, I think pain would have to be number one. It is something that occurs acutely and chronically, as a result of an accident or range of illnesses and has a profound impact on people’s quality of life. It can happen to anyone, at any time, and often in addition to other chronic ailments. Just think about it for a moment. No matter the location, pain leads to a lack of function in your daily life, often causes sleep disturbance, which in turn, affects how you function. Being in pain affects your emotions and so does a loss of functioning, causing frustration, anger, irritability or even depression. There are increased costs, sometimes loss of income and often stress on relationships. No wonder people go to great lengths to achieve pain relief. Acute pain is something most people are familiar with treating. Things like headache, back pain, sports injuries. We know they will be temporary and can usually manage with over-the-counter remedies – either paracetamol or an NSAID such as ibuprofen and management approaches, such as rest, ice to control swelling, or heat packs after the initial swelling is resolved. Stronger pain may require the addition of codeine. Codeine can be a very useful drug, but it works only once the body converts it to morphine. Unfortunately, only 25% of the population can metabolise it, so if it doesn’t work for you, chances are, you are not in that 25%. It can also become addictive in just a few days and cause constipation, partly by making the muscles in the bowel work haphazardly instead of in the usual co-ordinated way. Pain is described as chronic if it has persisted for more than six months. In formulating a management plan, health professionals try to pin down the type of pain, whether from joints, muscles, nerves, or headache pain or a combination. This can guide the medical treatment - sometimes. We usually begin with paracetamol, as it works alongside other painkillers and can reduce the need for stronger agents, even for cancer pain, so it is important to persist with it, even though it is so familiar and doesn’t seem to do enough by itself.
stomach ulceration which can perforate and bleed. Most are associated with an increase in the risk of death from heart attack and heart failure.
