Editor’s Note Christmas is the time of year that we really see community spirit come alive in our regions. In between neighbourhood gatherings and family get togethers, we come together as a community and try to bring a little joy to the people around us. Whether it’s take your kids to visit Santa, donating to complete strangers through one of the charities that desperately need our help at this time of year, or maybe it’s just buying someone special a gift you know they will love, anything to make the people around us feel special. This season is all about giving and celebrating the year that’s been. Hopefully it’s been a good year for you and your family and you can reflect on those times, but if it hasn’t been so great, celebrate that it’s over and next year can only be better! The new year is just around the corner and with it, an opportunity to start fresh. Let’s hope that 2015 kicks off with a nice big wash down of all this dust, or maybe Santa can bring us some rain to fill our tanks and dams and dampen the paddocks, enough to grow some grass would be great! As it is the Christmas season please remember to support your LOCAL businesses! We have some fantastic businesses in the Western Downs and by shopping locally you are strengthening the local community and economy. Remember, every time you choose to spend money you are deciding what sort of community you want. Find some time to sit quietly and enjoy your last Jandowae Mill for 2014. Wishing you and your family a safe and Merry Christmas and I hope you have the opportunity to spend time with the special people in your life over this festive season.

Golden Jubilee Celebrations at Bell State School At our recent Secondary School Golden Jubilee celebration events, I believe we achieved the main purpose that sat behind our actions: to create opportunities for many people to come together and share stories of their time at our school, in particular, the secondary years. Given the busy schedule of our work and how valuable the commitment to family time is for people, we offered three diverse opportunities. We also acknowledged the fact that approximately half of the state schools in Queensland are teaching approximately a quarter of the state school students, and are in rural and remote areas. It was a pleasure to develop in partnership with community, an array of unique celebration opportunities that would help rekindle the interest of the young families living in rural townships and districts, to look to their local school for a good start in education. I was fortunate in being able to move about and talk with many of our Jubilee visitors. Past students, teachers and principals, parents and extended family Memorial Garden opened by John Nation (inset) members of students who had attended mingled with our current students and their families. They were able to query each other’s memories of who, what, where and when, outbid old classmates in the Pig Derby and supported Our special guests did us proud each other to walk back from the oval after the friendly yet serious softball with their sincere appreciation for the hard work that had game. gone before the Jubilee events. Tours of the school were a highlight. As of yet, we have not received any emails It was humbling to be offered with photographs of past students sitting at the desk in the Principal’s office. the time and support from the gentlemen who took on the Jubilee Dinner role of Master of Ceremonies for the various gatherings, especially as their eyes have been on the horizon for a time, looking for those rain clouds. A school in a small township is a rural advantage. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate a school’s milestone in providing an education in a rural area is a bountiful and authentic experience. Our jubilee celebrations have given us even stronger connections to our rural community. That’s a Bell advantage.

Remembrance Day The Jandowae RSL sub-branch Remembrance Day Ceremony was a success, and although numbers were down, all enjoyed the gathering. As we all know, the day is about remembering our fallen soldiers, sailors and airmen. Even though it is dated the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, it really is much more these days, as we remember all that have fallen over the past years. We as a community and country should be very grateful for the sacrifice they gave for us to have what we have now in the way of a great country and town. We were very impressed with the Jandowae P-10 students and their view of what Remembrance Day was about to them. A big Bravo Zulu to the young man who wrote a poem for the day; I have actually asked if I could read it out for each year on.

The Lions Club is available for catering when the SES is called out. Our club has always provided this service. The general public is probably not aware of this support we provide, and in fact, our club is mentioned in the District Disaster plan to carry out this role. It can be a challenge, as you get very little notice. On one occasion some years ago, we were called upon to feed more than 70 SES members, police, a rescue Helicopter crew and also several army personnel. This was required over a twoday period and we were told that we did an admirable job. Finally, we will have the Dalby Lions Club car rally arriving at our Lions Park on the 23rd of November for a barbecue dinner, with the Jandowae Lions joining in for a social get together. Jandowae Jammin’

Jandowae Business & Community Group

G’day groovers and hip twisters,

Merry Christmas to All.

It was good to be back at the microphone and cracking the whip to motivate the local musical talent. I think the last total I counted was about 70 give or take five, which is still a good number to entertain, but I tell you what, the smorgasbord of food didn’t last long and I reckon there was still some taken home.

This will be the last editorial for this year and how the year has flown. We are making progress with our initiatives and making some a reality,

From the first time the Jammin’ Session started 13 months ago now, I believe the talent has improved two-fold, and we are also getting new blood coming along to entertain and pacify the herd of music hungry beasts. We had a young family sing and play, which is great to see them with the confidence to get up on stage and give it a go. I would like to put a name to them, but all I know is mum was Lorrenda, Casey, and a young boy and girl. Hopefully they will come back and sing some more in the future. Our next Jammin’ Session will have a Chrissie theme to it, so stick on your elf ears and scoot along to the Jandowae Memorial Hall for a big surprise; only if you have been good though, wink! wink! nod! nod!

The Jandowae Business and Community Group would like to thank the Jandowae town folk and visitors for coming to our trial “Parkets” (markets in the park) on the 31st of October. The evening was a success and the overall view was that we should hold them quarterly, so it is our intention to have them in October of each year, to start the shop local promotion and have the second one on the first Friday night of the month of February, being the 6th of February 2015 to draw the winner of the shop local promotion.

for a while, but Sue Wilson approached us at a meeting, regarding having a yearly calendar like in the Chinchilla Vine, and the idea has grown since then. We will be close to putting the idea into action once we have all the correct data, but in saying that, it can be updated on a monthly basis. So if you read this and are part of an organisation, feel free to let us know what you have on for the next year’s activities. We are also putting out a call for a secretary for the JBCG. If you have a little bit of time to spare you would be warmly welcomed to join us in making a difference to Jandowae.

The JBCG will continue with tradition by promoting the Jandowae Christmas Light Up Your House Competition, which the best three winners will be given a shop local For 2015 we have spoken to the Jandowae voucher to spend in any of our participating Junior Football Club, and offered to have the “Shop Local Promotion” businesses. mid year “Parkets” in conjunction with the Zone 4 footy, on a Wednesday night, which So light up your house with decorations will be something different and exciting for and brighten up Jandowae in the spirit of Christmas. all. This is still awaiting confirmation. So merry Christmas and a happy New Year for 2015.

It only costs a gold coin donation and a plate of food, plus you get a feed and a cuppa!

Also, we are in the throws of sending out letters to all organisations and groups to look at setting up a yearly calendar in the Jandowae Mill, being sponsored by Origin energy. The initiative has been on our books

As always, let me thank the musos, Les and Oakey for their time and patience, and of course the audience, and a big thank you to my MUMMY!

Jandowae Welcomes a New Doctor to Town After 32 years of continuous service to the Jandowae rural community, Dr Tony Balston has decided to take extended long service leave. He has been fortunate to find Dr Luke Dwyer who is prepared to cover this whole period. Dr Dwyer has recently completed his extensive rural generalist training through the Australian College of Rural & Remote Medicine, much of it at Roma Hospital. He follows in Dr Balston’s footsteps in being very supportive of rural medicine and rural communities. Dr Dwyer has already been intimately involved with Rural Doctors Association of Queensland as its treasurer and will no doubt continue his involvement after recently returning from 6 months holiday in Europe. Dr Dwyer has recently become engaged to one of the local Jandowae residents, Kimberly Bach, after meeting at the Roma Hospital. Kimberly, a registered nurse, has already commenced nursing duties at the Jandowae Hospital. It is hoped that the Jandowae community supports Dr Dwyer and that he enjoys the challenge of caring for this community as Dr Balston has over these years. The Gatehouse Medical Practice

Our Christmas Service will again be held on Christmas Eve, Wednesday 24th December. Cool drinks will be served on the lawn from 6.00pm with the service commencing at 7.00pm. After the service, tea and coffee and Christmas cake will be shared. Everyone will be most welcome. By the time this issue of the Jandowae Mill is distributed, several Christmas break-up functions will have taken place. We hope these were enjoyable to all who attended. Members of the Uniting Church congregation wish everyone a happy and holy Christmas and hope to catch up in the new year.

Dr. Tony Balston welcomes Dr. Luke Dwyer to The Gatehouse Medical Practice on Monday 17th November 2014

Jandowae and District Garden Club Inc We will have had our November Christmas meeting by the time the December issue of this magazine comes out. Thank you from Jandowae Local Chaplaincy Committee 2014 has seen a young man by the name of Matty Stoner step into the role as chaplain at Jandowae State School. The school has been without a chaplain since June 2012, so Matty has had some ground work to do in establishing relationships with students and teachers. Reports from teaching staff, students and parents have been very positive and indicate that he is making a difference in the lives of the students and teachers. The local chaplaincy committee has reformed under the capable leadership of Tim Baskerville and has met monthly to support and direct Matty in his chosen role. The majority of funding for chaplaincy is provided by the Commonwealth Government and administered by the State Government. However, each school community has a responsibility to raise significant funds toward the program. The amount required from each community is in excess of $15,000 per year, which is directed to salary, on costs and programs for the local chaplain. So far this year, the Jandowae community has contributed in excess of seventeen thousand dollars to the chaplaincy program. This has been a great effort from the community and several individuals have been very generous in their support. On behalf of the Local Chaplaincy Committee, I would like to thank these individuals and families for their generous support. These people cannot be named for obvious privacy reasons. There has also been generous support from several organisations in the community and I would like to publicly acknowledge and thank them for recognising the benefits of chaplaincy in the community and for their financial support. A big thank you must go to Jandowae Lions Club, Jandowae Trail Bike Ride Association, Jandowae State School Parents and Citizens, Jandowae Get Together Club, Anglican Church, Catholic Church, Uniting Church, Assembly of God Church, Jandowae Combined Churches and the Western Downs Regional Council. 2015 will see chaplaincy continue at Jandowae State School and further funds will be needed. Should you wish to support chaplaincy, donations can be left at the school office or posted to Chaplaincy, PO Box 100, Jandowae 4410. All donations over $2 are tax deductible and receipts can be issued. Thank you Jandowae community and we look forward to another year of chaplaincy making a difference in the lives of our young people. Geoff Sullivan Jandowae LCC Treasurer

Musings from The Muse Free Range Right up to the Fence:

ends meet by whatever means they could. Cutting the abundant timber was the main option. Arthur says that in the period of the 1920s until the timber cut out, he and his brother cut almost 1,000,000 super feet. They received 2 shillings and sixpence (25 cents) a foot at the stump; all cut with axes and cross cut saws.

I received an old letter last week that caught my attention with one paragraph. “This was in 1896 (8) and was the only fenced property for many years.” It was in a letter that Len Martin’s father Merril received from one of the pioneers of the Darr Creek area, a man named Arthur Courtney. The letter was dated May 9th 1969. He admitted the work was heavy and constant. Wanda Graham Celebrates 100 Years

Taralga News

Taralga was a hive of activity on Thursday 6th November when family and friends, some travelling interstate, joined with Wanda Graham to help celebrate her 100th birthday.

As well as the main event being the celebration of Wanda Graham turning 100 years of age, Taralga residents have had a busy November.

The staff at Taralga decorated the outdoor area Wanda cuts a beautiful cake in celebration of her 100th birthday beautifully for this occasion, and loved ones surrounded Wanda Hon Bruce Scott MP, Queensland Premier as she cut her birthday cake, which had been Campbell Newman, Prime Minister Tony specially made in the Taralga kitchen. Melbourne Cup was celebrated with a marvellous luncheon prepared by our capable kitchen staff. Some visitors including our band of volunteers helped to make the day a joyous occasion. Cup games were held in the morning and after lunch, and all in attendance took up positions to watch the race with hopes of a win from the several sweeps that were operating. Some happy faces resulted and some showed the frustration of the racing game. Residents enjoyed card games, activities and a visit from the Jandowae Craft Club during the past month. The ladies from the Craft Club showed off their talents and creations and helped the residents with some of their craftwork. It is hoped that these visits can occur on a more frequent basis. The Mowing Minstrels have provided entertainment with their songs and music being enjoyed by all. On a different subject, Taralga has recently purchased the old butter factory site. Future use of this 4 acre block will become part of Taralga’s Strategic Plan, which is nearly completed. The Management Committee will now examine several options for the development of this site. Taralga has several vacancies available and information can be obtained from the office or by phoning 4668 5433. The management and residents thank all the organisations and individuals who have visited and supported us over the past year and wish you all a happy and safe Christmas and an exciting 2015. Festive Fatty Foods and your Furry Friends Veterinarians around the world see an increased rate of patients with pancreatitis during the festive season. Out & About

About National Rodeo Council of Australia (NRCA) The National Rodeo Council of Australia (NRCA) is the first non-profit organisation made up and run by a united body of rodeo associations nationally. Formed in 1992 to further the sport of rodeo, the National Rodeo Council of Australia provides assistance to members in administration, access to a national insurance scheme, training and safety programs, animal welfare and up to date government regulations and policies. The major goal and objectives for the NRCA has always been to have one voice, representing rodeo at government level by eliminating the confusion of separate groups making individual representations and to work alongside each member Association to actively promote the sport of rodeo in Australia. Each year a National Finals event is conducted bringing together the top riders from each of the member Associations creating a 'Truly Unique' Australian National Rodeo Finals event. The National Rodeo Finals event, is the only event of it’s kind to bring together individual Rodeo Associations to compete for the one championship title. National Rodeo Council of Australia (NRCA)

Education

Kindy Kapers We have not had a decision from C&K on our application to become a C&K Branch. Therefore we will need parents to consider taking on a position next year. A lot of us are leaving the kindergarten as our last child moves on to school, so we will need new parents to step up into the committee positions. They are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Fundraising Coordinator, Maintenance Coordinator, Grants Coordinator and Communications Coordinator. If you would like more information on any of the positions please contact me.

been accepted and we are now in the process of offering places to children who will turn three before the Kindy recommences. Children who turn three during the year will be offered a place as they turn three. The kindergarten has a country casual policy, where children from outlying areas can attend Kindy on a daily basis rather than have to attend the full 15-hour program, however, certain criteria have to be met. The committee realises that it is not feasible or sometimes even possible for the children from outlying areas to attend the 15-hour program. If you are interested in your child attending Kindy and think that this may apply to you, please contact the Kindy via email or phone as above until Kindy comes back.

Our 2015 teaching staff will be Courtney Webster, Kelly Muller, Connie Yard and Rhiannon Staines. Should you have any questions or wish to enrol your child, the teachers can be contacted via phone 0746 685 665 or email jandowaekindy@ We have recently been assessed for the first time bigpond.com under the National Quality Framework. I would In 2014 we moved to a 15-hour a week program like to thank the teaching staff for all the extra for pre-prep children. We are operating two hours that they put in. We received ‘exceeding groups; this means we run a 5-day fortnight expectations’ in most areas and ‘meeting where children need to attend the same two days expectations’ in all others, only one short of each week and every alternate Wednesday. For getting Exceeds Expectations overall. A great example, Group A will attend Monday/Tuesday effort by all involved for our first assessment. and every alternate Wednesday, and Group B will attend Thursday/Friday and every alternate Don’t forget to support the Lions Fun Night, another Wednesday. The offers for pre-prep children have fundraising opportunity for our local Kindy, P&C and Scouts, so buy a burger and drink at our stalls.

Once again, a huge thank you to Kate Haig and Gillian Basssingthwaighte for taking the end of year Kindy photos. They did a fantastic job, trying to get 3 and 4-year-olds looking the same way and smiling all at once is an extremely difficult task. We do have to say goodbye to Stacey Thompson and her family, and wish them well with their move. Thank you for your work as maintenance coordinator, Stacey. This leaves open the Maintenance Coordinator position. Please contact the Kindy if you are interested. The new format for the prep transition days has been successful, with many favourable comments from parents. It is great that we have a good working relationship between the Kindy and school. Having said this, I would like to wish the current pre-preppies goodbye and good luck in their new and exciting adventure at prep/big school next year. Have a happy and safe Christmas/ New Year. QCWA News Maranoa Division members were thrilled to be presented with prizes following judging at the State Competition finals at Conference held recently in Ipswich. The Conference was very lively and vibrant. Wednesday, all members dressed in citrus colours, as this was the agricultural theme for the year. Next year, the State has adopted ‘beetroot’, being put forward from Maranoa. There were many highlights over the few days, including: a Civic Reception by the Mayor of Ipswich, Paul Pisasale, opening of Conference by Mrs Kay de Jersey, the Fundraiser Dinner, presentation of $13,977 to Colourful ladies of the State Executive of the Motor Neurone Research and the QCWA, Carol Jackson, State International announcement that “Blaze Aid” will Officer and Maria Keys, at the G20 Expressions in Sculpture exhibition, held in be the external appeal for 2015, the Riverside Centre Foyer, Brisbane were just a few. Many locals visited the Ipswich Civic Centre to view the wonderful display of competitions. Congratulations to Maria Keys from Condamine-Arubial Branch who was elected as the QCWA Vice President for Southern Region. We have a succession of Maranoa Division ladies voted to this position which is great for Western Downs, as the State Executive have regular meetings with State Government ministers to discuss any concerns affecting members State wide and Maria will be familiar to some affecting our Region. Background of Backgrounders - Part 2 Steer trader breed types, a target market is just as important. Most commercial feedlotters will supply your agent with a feedlot entry specification grid, outlining weights, breeds and delivery instructions for successful induction into their feedlot; this may also be accompanied by a contract to purchase, outlining payment terms and trading terms and conditions (if using your local agent, this should all be taken care of on your behalf ). Getting your steers up to the desired weights for feedlot entry is no different than the heifers, with the minimum weight generally around 300kg curfewed, and a maximum of up to 550kg. Currently, the feeder grids are looking for steers 300-360kg for the domestic 70 day grain fed yearling market. These steers must not have more than their 2 teeth to meet this market. The bullock or heavy feeder market is quoting 360480kg with some feedlotters requiring them 400-550 kg. All of these heavy steers are paid a premium for milk and 2 teeth. Most feedlotters deduct up to 10 cents for steers with 4 teeth, due to the age of the steer and the possibility of him breaking 6 tooth during his 100-120 days in the feedlot prior to slaughter.

mind. For example, straight Brahman steers can, at domestic feeder weights, occasionally attract less competition by feedlotters than, for example, straight bred Angus steers. If your target market is the heavy feeder or bullock market, then both Brahmans and Angus will be highly sort after in the Saleyards and on a landed feedlot basis. Now that you’ve decided that back grounding suits your property, there are topics such as grazing practices, cell grazing, rotational and continuous grazing. These all require different levels of management. From my experience, as livestock salesman, I would suggest utilising the system that doesn’t degrade your land but allows for the greatest weight gains from your steers and heifers. The land and pasture program you undertake must be financially and physically viable - you will want to have a holiday at some stage!

Backgrounding is an important part of the cattle industry which can be very rewarding. Hopefully, this has given you some insight or assistance in moving your livestock business towards backgrounding.

When receiving your first mob of backgrounders If you have any questions or require livestock home, and unsure of previous treatments, it is purchased and marketed, please feel free to talk with the livestock team at Landmark Dalby. good practice to:

30 - December 2014

Finally, you’ve got the young cattle out in the paddock, healthy, happy and tidy. However, to maximise your weight gains, it is important to know the capabilities of your pastures and crops you graze. It is, therefore, good practice to own your own scales as this will show you, not only the weight gains of your cattle, but provide a value of each paddock’s capabilities. For example, one of my clients knows that, on grass, his steers will average 0.6 kg gain per day during average seasonal conditions. Based on this knowledge, he can weigh his steers at the right time which reduces excess handling of livestock without affecting their overall performance.

Jesus is not the only Christmas baby we are looking forward to celebrating this year. Our Personal Carer, Emma will be looking forward to a Christmas baby of her own. Health & Beauty Living Eczema-Free: Five Natural Steps Which Might Help You Live an Eczema-Free Life CHECK YOUR

DIET FOR

HIDDEN ALLERGIES

If you are an eczema sufferer, it’s quite possible that the trigger for your condition lies in the food that you eat. There is ample research to show that dietary allergens help cause and perpetuate skin disease. Many of the food types that might cause eczema are well known and include: dairy products (especially milk and eggs); peanuts; gluten; soy; preservatives in food, including sulphites[1] (look for the numbers E220-228 on food labels) and colour and flavour enhancers[2] (MSG boosters like 627, 631, and 635)

You could also consider trying an elimination diet, which requires you to eliminate certain foods from your diet for a specified time (usually 3-4 weeks) before slowly reintroducing them, one food type at a time, until you discover what is causing your allergic reaction.[3]

REDUCE YOUR

EXPOSURE

TO TOXIC

ENVIRONMENTAL

CHEMICALS

The only way to escape exposure to the thousands of toxic chemicals which are part and parcel of modern day life is to live in a remote jungle, without access to technology, and all your food and clothing is sourced from the local fauna and flora. Not only can these chemicals trigger eczema in some people, they are being held increasingly accountable for the explosion of allergies generally that western society has witnessed in the last few decades.

Take the time to seek non-toxic products, read ingredient labels carefully and adhere to the following guidelines, you might help to relieve the incidence and severity of eczema: Select cleaning products made from plant-based materials and free of synthetic fragrances.

Avoid anti-bacterial soaps, and shampoos and toothpastes containing sulphates.

Use certified organic skincare and makeup products.

Choose organic fruits and vegetables for your family when you can. They have less pesticide residue.

Avoid using synthetic pesticides. Chemical weed and bug killers are particularly noxious and their use should be avoided both inside and outside the house.

To help ensure that pesticides and other chemicals do not enter the house, establish a ‘no shoe’ policy for your home.

Have your tap water tested and if contaminants are found, install a reverse osmosis water filter on all your faucets.

Do your research and make informed choices when it comes to your choice of furniture, bedding and clothes.

MAINTAIN THE HEALTH &

INTEGRITY

OF YOUR SKIN

Our skin has a mantle of healthy, natural bacteria that helps protect it. If these bacteria get out of balance and the skin becomes host to unwanted bacterial growth, it can lead to a heightened immune response which causes inflammation (and associated redness and itching). This is what happens when eczema flares up.

We should start by avoiding chemical surfactants (foaming agents known as sulphates and which, as noted above, we often find in everyday items such as our shampoo, our toothpaste and our laundry detergent). Further to this, we need to start using products that have the same pH balance as our skin.

[1]The Health Canada website contains an excellent list of foods containing sulphites – http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/pubs/securit/2012allergen_sulphites-sulfites/index-eng.php   [2]The Food Intolerance Network offers an overview of flavour enhancers, their impact, and what foods you might find them in – http://fedup.com.au/factsheets/additive-and-natural-chemical-factsheets/635-ribo-rashribonucleotides-627-631    [3]Whilst visiting a specialist is always advised, a good overview of elimination diets can be found on the Precision Nutrition website – http://www.precisionnutrition.com/elimination-diet Any information provided herein does not constitute medical or health care advice for any health or individual problem. The material presented is not a substitute for medical or other professional health services from a qualified health care provider who is familiar with the

unique facts of the individual. Individuals should always consult a qualified health care provider about any health concern and prior to undertaking any new treatment or relying on any medical information.

The health of our gut is intimately connected to the health of our skin. If our gut is compromised, then our skin will most likely serve as a mirror, beset by breakouts that can range from sudden rashes and acne right through to severe cases of eczema or psoriasis.

LOOK AFTER YOUR GUT!

We should not only avoid an excess of grains, sugars and processed foods (as well as antibiotics where we can), but look to supplement our diet with probiotics and fermented foods. Whilst this might require us to substantially change our diet, the benefit for our gut, our skin and our health is likely to be enormous.

A problem o c c u r s though when we become overly stressed or stressed for extended periods of time. When this happens, our immune system is compromised and we get sick. Stress is associated with a number of different physical and psychological ailments and is known to be a key trigger in causing eczema.

MEDITATE

This is where meditation can be beneficial. It can take us outside whatever is bothering us, help us to breathe properly and provide us with the focus and peace of mind necessary to not only cope with external stressors but maximize our health. Eczema is not easily controlled and even more difficult to beat. But it doesn’t have to be a life-long sentence, continuously managed by pharmaceutical drugs. If you are prepared to put your mind to it, and put into action some of the lifestyle and dietary changes suggested above, then you will be giving yourself the best chance to get on top of this debilitating condition. Business

Getting Ready for the Silly Season It’s the season for parties, holidays, and fun with friends and loved ones. But it’s also time to start making plans for what you want to achieve in 2015. We’re not just accountants. We’re your business adviser and your sounding board. So, whether you’ve already made your new year’s resolutions or you need a hand to get on track… It’s December and we have officially hit the “silly season”. Chances are, you’re running around like a chook with its head cut off, shopping for gifts, attending end-of-year break ups, planning Christmas lunch and packing for family holidays. However, have you actually stopped to make sure you are truly ‘silly-season-ready’?

We’re with you every step of the way. www.bmo.com.au facebook.com/bmodalby 178 Drayton Street Dalby 07 4662 3722

I don’t want to be all bar-hum-bug, but in amongst the frivolity, we have some tips for being prepared for the more serious side of the silly season. Do a budget: A survey by the Commonwealth Bank said on average, Aussies spend over $400 each on Christmas; that’s roughly $7.8 billion nationwide. If you are reading this and have no idea if you are above or below the average, then you need a budget. Many of us can get so caught up in the lights, the tinsel, and the spirit of giving that we forget about our other year-round commitments. Watch the credit: Christmas is a time of giving, however, that’s not an excuse to give your credit card a workout. This year, consider more thoughtful, less expensive gifts. Try some homemade gifts to bolster a ‘bought’ present, look for good bargains and support local businesses where you can. Cut out any unnecessary items. Be tough this year; before putting it in your basket, think, just need a dash of good planning and a sprinkle of discipline. Being properly ‘Do I really need this?’ You’ll be surprised how much you put back and the prepared will help remove the stress and anxiety and allow you to appreciate money you’ll save. the true celebration of Christmas. Enjoy the time with family and friends, be safe and have a merry one! Have your affairs in order: While no-one likes to think about it, summer in Australia also means fires, storms and busy roads. Sadly, sometimes things Kelvin Tyler, BMO Business Centre go wrong. Before we hit the road for the ‘rellie-rally’ or the summer holiday, Kelvin Tyler is a partner at BMO Accountants.
