A Note From The Editor ♪ Baby it’s cold outside ♫ We have been singing up a storm in the office while compiling the July edition of the Jandowae Mill. Unfortunately, a neighbouring dog has been joining us - even when we were trying to actually work. The Dalby Harvest was created in the Jandowae office this month for the last time, and will reside now in its new home in the heart of Dalby, in the Chamber of Commerce building, Cunningham Street. Amy Skerman will be working in the Dalby office Monday to Wednesdays from 9am to 4pm, and will be available on Thursdays and Fridays by appointment. The Jandowae office remains the head office of Western Downs Magazines. In the meantime, the July edition of your magazine is full of some great articles and competitions! On pages 2, 3, 8 and 9 we have a wrap up of the Jandowae Timbertown Festival from the Committee, and throughout the magazine you will find that many groups were involved over the long weekend. The Domiciliary Art Show, page 6, was also a great night out. Congratulations to all those involved in orchestrating such a fantastic event for the Western Downs! Don’t forget to enter the Empire Theatre (page 40) and Beautiful Babies (page 37) competitions this month. Speaking of babies, the Western Downs Magazines team would like to congratulate Jessica and family on the arrival of Annabelle Eliza. We already have Annabelle in the office learning all about the magazines! We hope you enjoy your July edition of the magazine. Until next month!

What a busy time we all had during Timbertown! First of all, I would like to congratulate the Timbertown Committee for a great weekend of entertainment. It started on Friday night with the Art Show. Then on Saturday, markets, poets’ breakfast, street parade, chain sawing events, specially the chainsaw carving, as well as timber cutting. The night had the most spectacular fireworks, rodeo and a band. It was certainly a busy time.

Jandowae Mill August - Deadline!
Our Craft Club held our biannual craft show also on the Saturday and again on Sunday; this was another successful weekend for us. Thank you, members, for all your help during the two days. The major raffle prize (a quilt) was won by a Millmerran resident. The most popular quilt was won by Beryl McKenna with her Federation Quilt. Beryl tells us that it was a long term project. I would like to thank everyone who attended over the weekend and especially the stall holders. We have already got plans for the next craft show in two years’ time. The next two months will also be busy with three projects and a workshop.

Timbertown Festival Art Exhibition Jandowae Domiciliary Care was fortunate again this year to host the Timbertown Festival Art Exhibition throughout the June long weekend. The Art Exhibition kicked off with a cocktail party on Friday evening, which included the official opening of the festival by Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Ray Brown and the presentation of plaques and bottle trees by the Timbertown Committee to the Festival’s many sponsors. Attendees were crooned by Melinda Wells and the Witt City Band who were ably assisted by students from Jandowae State School. The students, who also enjoyed sessions with Melinda at school leading up to the festival, proved themselves born entertainers who will no doubt be on the lookout for keen and captivated audiences in the future.

A delicious menu, meticulously planned by KylieAnne Spence, saw guests served scrumptious savouries, and those with “sweet teeth” were well tended with delicious petit fours prepared by our wonderful JDC Support Committee. Sixteen (16) generous artists donated pieces for the People’s Choice Awards. These items were auctioned on the Friday night by talented auctioneer, Alex Haig, and raised an amazing $1550. The enthusiasm of bidders proved entertaining for those who watched on as each piece attracted its own eager followers.
Visitors to the Exhibition voted keenly on these 16 pieces throughout the weekend. By Sunday afternoon, the People’s Choice was clear. “On Sentry Duty”, the lovely kookaburra painted by 7. local artist Dorrie Horne, was announced as the winning piece. The prize of a beautifully crafted Art box made and donated by local craftsman, A huge band of volunteers, too numerous to Noel Crowle, was presented to Dorrie who was mention, made this wonderful event successful again this year and on behalf of Jandowae both stunned and thrilled by this award. Bushgrove Bus Run Celebrates 50 Years with Mrs Schultz! This year’s Timbertown celebrations coincided with the 50th Anniversary of the Bushgrove bus run. On Sunday 8th June, a large crowd gathered with Mrs Daphne Schultz at the Jandowae Bowls Club to help celebrate this milestone. Mrs Schultz has operated the Bushgrove bus run continuously since it’s inception in 1964, taking children from the district to Jandowae Kindergarten and Jandowae Prep-10 State School. Kate Haig

Jandowae Timbertown 2014 to keep children happy and the Club Hotel for hosting the yabby races on Saturday. We thank Kay and Ivan Grundy, and members of the Lions Club for the work they did directing stallholders and handling last minute site changes at the Lions Park from 5am on Sunday morning. This took great pressure off our overworked Timbertown committee who were very tired by this time! Thank you also to the Junior Rugby League team for hosting the football carnival, Cricket Club for the Sunday event and Golf Club for the Monday event. All these activities put together are what make up the Jandowae Timbertown Festival! Road closures and traffic management were well handled by the SES and we thank them for providing this vital service.
for their groups. We hope you all did well and will be involved again in 2016. The tennis club and swimming club also helped out selling merchandise, thank you for supplying the peoplepower for this job!
There were many community groups that contributed to the festival and we must thank them for their time and efforts.
A big thank you must go to Tony Blinco for his involvement in the festival and for working with Sarah to organise the chainsaw racing events. Only with Tony’s contacts and the use of his machinery were we able to provide this great event at the festival. The event was the biggest hit at the festival on Saturday and exciting to watch! Darcy Senior and Darcy Junior also showcased the use of the Lucas mill, something that many would not have seen in use – thank you for bringing this in and demonstrating its use. Thank you Elders Jandowae Extra special thanks goes to Ken and Lillian Krog for for making special efforts to promote the split post taking on the big job of managing the camping at auction at the close of Saturday’s timber events and the showgrounds for the festival. The Domiciliary hosted the Art and Photography Exhibition and added a touch of class to the festival; the opening night was also the official opening event for Timbertown 2014. The Jandowae Scouts assisted us by giving out balloons and lollies
The Jandowae P-10 State School P&C, QCWA, Jandowae Kindy, Jimbour State School P&C, Hospital Auxilliary Group and Lions Cub also catered for the crowds throughout the weekend and provided quality food while fundraising
The Festival was able to cater for everyone with so many things on offer. Thanks here must go to Geoff Sullivan and volunteers who set up and coordinated the Church Service at Athlone Cottage on Sunday morning. Athlone Cottage
Wow, what a success the 2014 Jandowae Timbertown Festival was. Even the weather cooperated! There are so many people to thank who helped make for yet another successful Festival. Firstly, we must pay our respect to the 2012 Timbertown Committee who ran a fantastic event in 2012 and cemented the reputation of the Festival, drawing crowds back in 2014! Our team of festival organisers met each month to discuss ideas and put things in place. We each had our own jobs to do as well as helping each other out when it was needed. Our team consisted of: Darryl Donald (our fearless leader), Clint Nelson, Arthur Shirreff, Louise Pharaoh, Kate Haig, Kelly Waddell, Sarah Heathwood, Alanah McKenna, Ian Usher, Michael Wood, Melinda Wells, Lesley Gooderham and Ben Davison, as well as Amelia Wood and Jess Flynn who moved on to newborn baby duties not long before the festival. Also involved with Timbertown meetings and discussions were Tony Blinco, Lauren McDonald, Ray and Daph Polzin, Pam Wood, Simone Dalgleish and Doug Henning.

Kindy Kapers What a busy but great time was had at Timbertown! I am still having people rave over the Kindy Roast Gravy rolls!! It was a very successful fundraiser for the Kindy, and thanks must go to Mandy Heath, our fundraising co-ordinator, for coming up with the idea and organising it all. Our thanks also to Julie Grima for cooking all the roasts, Nelson’s for supplying and cutting the roasts and Gladys Franz for donating the pumpkins for the pumpkin soup. But most importantly, a huge ‘thank you’ to Arthur Sheriff for his continuing support of our Kindy; he goes beyond what would be considered great customer service opening up and delivering whatever is required. It must be said, he was part of the success of our gravy rolls with great ‘melt in your mouth’ bread buns and the secret gravy. Thank you to all who supported the Kindy over the Timbertown week-end; the funds raised will be used to improve our Kindy grounds. The next big challenge is the Trail Bike Ride on the 5th and 6th July. As always, there will be great tracks for the different age and skill levels. Any money raised will be shared between the Kindy and the Jandowae School P&C and will go towards equipment for the local children.
Timbertown 2014 Grand Parade The official opening of the Kindy will be held on the 27th July at the Kindergarten for Morning tea at 10am. All past and present attendees of the kindergarten are invited to attend. It is also an opportunity for anyone wishing to send their child to kindergarten to come and have a look around.

Back at Kindy, the children have been using their experiences from the excursion to inform their hospital play. We had Peppa bring in her baby for her needles and Mackenzie sign her in as she arrived at the hospital. We witnessed many empathetic interactions between the children while engaging in this play. Stay tuned for next month’s exciting edition as we take you on a journey of rocks and bugs…. with special investigations into bug patterns, symmetry of wings and discoveries that children make within the kindy and home environments! Group B News We have recently been engaging in lots of shop play! We had Zavier and Archie putting price tags on toys that were for sale, Jaxson working the cash register and Oliver scanning the toys. The children lined up to be served, recognising that patience needs to prevail. The children have the opportunity to use mathematical language, cooperate and negotiate a shop environment with their peers. We will continue to build on this play by negotiating extra roles and supporting meaningful literacy and numeracy skills such as counting and writing signs.
We have been exploring Indigenous culture recently and with this, we have learnt Aboriginal words of the Barunggam people. The children have amazed me with their ability to pick up new words and remember their meanings. We have been learning words for body parts. Soon, we may even be able to play ‘Simon says’ using our new knowledge! We have also been listening to dreamtime stories. Next term, we will explore storytelling by acting out dreamtime stories through movement and dance.
I would like to thank all our Kindergarten families for a wonderful Term 2. It is always a rewarding experience to see your children develop new skills and grow in confidence as they gain new friendships and become active participants in our learning community. Welcome Scott, Lex and Alice who have recently joined our pre-prep program! Courtney, Connie and Rhiannon

Jandowae Music Club “Jammin” Session Howdy to You All!! What a great weekend Timbertown was and a huge ‘Well done’ to all involved with the organisation of the entire event. The Sunday of Timbertown, we had a turn out which was the biggest we have ever had - over 85 people and boy, oh boy! watch your fingers at half time. The ‘Jammin’ Session was in the Uniting Church Hall which is a bit smaller than the Memorial Hall, but we all fitted in beautifully and WOW! the musos were fantastic as usual. The afternoon went until 5.30 and getting dark, and I reckon the audience would have stayed longer if they could have. I think we had at least 15 different artists, Poets/Bush Poets, bands, solos, etc. I would like to offer a big ‘thank you’ to the Uniting Church for the use of the Hall on such short notice. ‘Thank you’ for helping out with the catering and the clean-up at the end of the day. We were all tired from the weekend and the ‘jammin’ session. Some good news, if you haven’t already heard, is that the Jandowae Business and Community Group has been successful in obtaining a grant for the painting of the Memorial Hall inside and out. This is so exciting and will make the old, ugly duckling into a beautiful swan again; so if you can be at the hall on the 13th July, 2014, there will be an official presentation from QGC to the Jandowae Business and Community Group for the grant.
Jandowae Business & Community Group Hello, everybody! I have been pondering the future of our town and have realised there is no real laid down plan for Jandowae and that is a great concern for me and hopefully, for the rest of the town. If there is, I personally do not know where it is held or displayed for all to see. As the President of the Jandowae Business and Community Group, that itself is a worry.
the future, so that the next generation can enjoy our “Great Place to be”. I guess what I’m saying is we need help from more people and the Locals to guide us to the future, based on the town’s past and making Jandowae a long term viable town with a positive environment. We are not seeking people to be on the Committee and get set upon to do work they don’t want to, we need to know what everybody wants for the future and how will we go about this process. I hear a lot about the past but nothing about the future.

The Era of the Pitsaw In my last column, I touched on the subject of pitsaws and timber cutting before the advent of circular saws and steam engines. It seems from information I have gathered, that steam driven sawmills came into operation during the 1870’s. That is long gone Hand drawn illustration of two pitsaws history for all of us walking around today. But for the early citizens of this area, those settlers who braved the harsh conditions and took the chance on making a life far from the cities on the coast, pitsaws, broad axes and adzes were the ‘Black and Decker’ tools of that era....all driven with muscle and determination, of course. For me, an adze always made a good garden hoe. They lifted the prickles out of the soil very well. I did once try to flatten the end of a round log until my father advised me that they could quite easily sever a leg if they happened to slide off the intended target. A chip of wood stuck to the cutting edge was very effective in that regard. He recounted a couple of stories that made my decision to try something else a very easy one to make....very quickly as well. Broad axes never attracted my attention at all. I have never seen a pitsaw in action either...but my imagination is still active and I have gained some wisdom along with my years. I am wise enough to know circular saws do a far better job. My Triton bench proves that to me regularly. Some years ago, during my outdoor rustic furniture tenure, I met a man at the Redbank markets who actually used broad axes and adzes to square off logs for bridges. He looked fit….extremely fit. He said he had plenty of work because all the logs he worked on were too long for sawmills to cut. My private thoughts remained private. But I did think there must be 100 other jobs around somewhere...This happened in the late 1990’s. A lot of the pitsaws I have seen on the internet are now above ground. A post and log frame is set up about 7 to 8 feet above the ground, the log to be sawn is placed on the frame and with a man on top straddling the log...he is called the Topdog and a man below (the Underdog) who does the actual cutting on the down stroke. The Topdog pulls the saw back up and guides the cut. It works in much the same way as a crosscut saw, but the teeth would be sharpened in the manner of a rip saw. The tops of the teeth would be flat and no angle, like little chisels. The sawdust from a ripsaw actually looks more like planer shavings....a lot smaller in size of course. Just as irritating as ordinary sawdust, however. I am sure there are examples of pitsaws around the country, if one knows where to look. I have seen working examples on the net in Tasmania. Perhaps for our 150th celebrations in 2016, a working demonstration could be set up. Something to think about! And, no, I am not putting my hand up. Ray, the builder, and myself did a working demo with a crosscut and a rather solid log, on the back of a truck in the Lions Fun Night parade some years ago if I remember correctly. I don’t need to go there again. I won’t speak for Ray. Quiz answer: What were the names of the two brothers, along with a second generation timber man, who opened the sawmill on the corner of Sydney and George Streets? Answer: Two brothers...Ron and Mick Ellis, along with Sid Blinco. Ellis, Ellis and Blinco. Quiz this month: The first 4 families to settle in Jondowie? Police Report Jandowae Police conducted Operation Woody over the Timbertown long weekend. We were assisted by Police from Dalby, Meandarra, Chinchilla, Kumbia, Bell and Cherbourg Stations. A Police presence throughout the Timbertown event ensured the safety of our community members and visitors to Jandowae. From a Police side of things, three drink drivers were intercepted and charged, readings 0.052%, 0.059% and 0.115%. A 28 year old male was issued a fine for no bicycle helmet. Police checks revealed he also had a Return to Prison Warrant; he was arrested and lodged in the Dalby Watch House. There were two Domestic Violence related matters and one stealing complaint, where a male person stole property from outside one of the Hotels; the licensee located the stolen property and Police investigations are continuing in relation to this matter.

A road closure permit was issued by the Officer in Charge of Jandowae Police to the Timbertown Committee, which entitles unregistered vehicles to be utilised in the parade under Police escort. If an unregistered vehicle is to be driven in the parade, it has to be towed to the Lions Park; the only other way to get the vehicle to the event is to attend the library and obtain an unregistered permit - this also provides the driver/ owner with Compulsory Third Party Insurance. Police will not turn a blind eye and give any person permission to break the law and drive an unregistered vehicle to the event.

BJFG Landcare BJFG Landcare Group held two workshops this month. The first was an information session about the use of compost in agricultural systems. The talk was delivered by David Hall, who runs an agronomy consultancy business for Organic Nutrients. It was well received by all who attended.
The Worrisome weeds project has already helped a number of landholders control weeds, from the Bunya Mountains to Chinchilla. Over the next twelve months, we will see the expansion of the project enabling landholders the ability to control emerging weeds.
Bruce Gardner delivered the second workshop on the importance of property planning. At this workshop, participants were given a taste of a more extensive workshop series covering topics including: Industry Context, Human Resources, Financial Evaluation, Enterprise Evaluation, Natural Resource Management and Strategic Planning.
We would also like to congratulate the CA on the environmental hub initiative at their new premises in Toowoomba. This will enable new start up environmental companies to get a foot hold in the sector. This hub will also be a one stop shop for all environmental issues in our region.
Philip Labrie There has been great interest and the first workshop BJFG Project Coordinator (0427664940) series will start in the coming month. If there is anyone interested in more information on farm planning, please contact the project coordinator on 0427664940. This workshop is supported and funded by Condamine Alliance’s Productive and Resilient Agricultural Landscapes, Condamine Catchment Regional Landcare Facilitator. The regional Landcare Facilitator programme is an initiative of the Australian Government Department of Agriculture.
JANDOWAE SCOUTS....Overview: February to June and DRUM MUSTER (onfarm pickup Friday, llth July**). ‘Hello’ to all as we go into the winter period. We have had a very busy time between all the local events this year, through Showtime, Anzac Day and Timbertown, with several ‘scouting only’ away activities. Despite the best efforts of Section & Group Leader(s), it is sometimes impossible to attend everything we inquire about. Time frames and extra support required just do not always blend. There will be more outdoor and camping style activities in the coming half year for all youngsters and family support helpers to enjoy. Family support each week is still required for all Sections. We have also re-vamped the Drum Muster Programme with two of the Committee accredited in March. The compound has been cleared and is being cleaned up for further use. We already have some takers for the Friday, 11th July pickup but can still take more :-)) RING: 4668-5810 or 4668-5456 for book in. PLEASE leave a message if you need to and we WILL ring back. Please note: we do still have some outlying ‘dump clean ups’ offered to us, however, despite the good job we do, and funds raised, there is an overall movement here and elsewhere towards mechanisation. As this happens, the larger dumps/tips will no longer require manual clean up, becoming ‘waste recycling depots’. This is simply a fact of the times. However, we can make up some of the lost funds through a good operation with Drum Muster and clean ups/participation in other activities. THANK YOU to all those people in Jandowae and District who do support Scouting by offering us a chance to participate. The half yearly report meeting will be on Wednesday, 16th July at 6.30pm. Bring a plate please (ie a snack/sandwiches etc) to share if you come along. The Report Meetings and Presentation of the forward half year programme, accounts and so on, is for Committee/Section Leaders/Family members and regular support assistants. We look forward to seeing you then! ‘Aquila” Group Leader

Jandowae Uniting Church holds a church service every Sunday morning at 8.30am. Why not come along and join us in praising our Lord?
At last, we can announce the regular relief assistance of the Rev. Fred Ailwood and wife, Barbara. Full Eucharist services will follow the previous pattern: Full Services at Jandowae, 9am St Paul’s on the 1st Sunday of every month, followed by Parish Council Meeting. Full Eucharist services at JANDOWAE 9am, DURONG 11.30am and BELL 3pm on 3rd Sundays of the month. We are thankful to have the Rt Rev. Fred assigned to us for the time being. A bonus is....the singing. Rev. Fred with an excellent baritone, loves to sing out and up aloud, encouraging all to do the same. These become quite nicely social occasions - alongside solemn worship and thanks. ALL WELCOME!
An Ecumenical Service was held on Sunday, 8th June, (Timbertown Weekend) at Athlone Cottage. This service was well attended and the guest speaker was Bob Britton from Scripture Union who gave us an insight into School Chaplaincy and what it means to our local Jandowae community. An offering was collected to go towards our Jandowae Chaplaincy Committee’s fundraising efforts. “Get Together” meets on the second Friday of each month from 9am to 12md. The next “Get Together” will be Friday, 11th July. Activities include cards, craft, jigsaw puzzles, board games, table tennis or just a good chat. Cost is a gold coin donation for a scrumptious morning tea. Why not come along and join our happy bunch of card players and “chatterers”? Each month, money raised goes to the Jandowae Chaplaincy Committee. We celebrated National Thanksgiving Day on 30th May. This year, we focussed on the transport industry and also our neighbours. Our packs of homemade biscuits, etc. were welcomed by members of our community involved in the transport industry. Thank you to everyone who helped with making the homemade biscuits and delivering the packs around town. Rev. The Budget and the PBS How does the PBS system work anyway? When the proposed Federal Budget came out, there seemed to be much discussion and confusion around how our medical and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme works for Australian citizens. I hope to make it all a little clearer. Your medicine doesn’t cost $6. The pharmacist buys medicines to stock the shop. When something is dispensed from the government subsidised list, you pay up to a certain threshold and the government is billed later for the rest of the price of the medicine. If you have a concession card, you contribute the first $6.00. If you are a working person without a concession card, you pay the actual price for the cheaper medicines, but if your prescription costs more than $36.90, that is all you have to contribute and the government pays the rest. Some medicines we dispense can cost up to $5000.00, but the patient doesn’t have to pay more than $36.90, so it is a very generous system. Our computer system prints the full price on the label above the price you pay for PBS medicines. Now, the patient contribution goes up a little each year. For example, the concession price goes up 10c and the general price increases a bit too, supposedly in line with inflation. When the budget was announced, it was planned to increase the amount concessional patients contribute by 80c per prescription (plus the usual 10c) which will make your contribution $6.90. You still have the government paying the rest. If you are a concession patient, they are also increasing the number of prescriptions you need to reach the safety net (Free prescriptions) to 62 prescriptions per year. Those concession families, who normally reach the safety net, will need to budget an extra $67.80 per year, which is about $1.30 per week. For general patients, there is mixed news and you may come out more or less even depending on which medications you take. The prices of many medications will drop significantly in October, which will adversely affect pharmacies as we make a small mark up on the items we dispense. This will benefit some of our general patients though, making more medicines drop below the $36.90 threshold anyway, and decreasing the price to the customer on those cheaper items. For the more expensive items however, your contribution will go up by $5 per prescription on top of the normal indexation for CPI. Last year, they went up by 80 cents per prescription, so I would recommend budgeting an extra $5.80 for those items subsidised by
the government just in case. They are also raising the safety net threshold by 10%. It is currently $1421.20 after which you only pay the concession amount, and a 10% increase will make it $1563.32. For those families who use a lot of medication and reach the safety net, you will need an additional $142.12 per year or about $2.75 per week. It is important to realise that the extra you pay will not be going to the pharmacist but will be decreasing the amount that the government has to reimburse the pharmacist. A little bit more will come from the patient and a little bit less from the government but over millions of prescriptions, it will add up to billions of dollars. In the same way, if you have to pay $7 more to see a doctor, that will be mostly decreasing the Medicare bill for the government and not really helping the doctor. Domiciliary Care News July is nearly here and the cold weather has finally found us. Don’t forget, if you are using heaters or electric blankets have these checked and tested to ensure they are still safe to use. The June long weekend saw the biennial Jandowae Timbertown Festival arrive. And what a festival it was! A huge congratulations to the Timbertown Committee members and their helpers for once again putting on a great festival. Our Support Committee kicked off the festival with the Gala Art Show cocktail evening and the opening of the Timbertown Festival. The art exhibition then continued over the weekend. By all accounts, the opening night was a success and the Support Committee raised a good sum with the auction of the donated art work and the raffle. I would personally like to thank all the staff, their partners and our great team of support committee members for all the volunteer hours they put into organising the weekend and working over the weekend to make the Art Show the success that it was. Your Own Blood Can Rejuvenate Your Face with a Vampire Facial This Platelet Rich Plasma treatment has been used to treat elite athlete’s injuries for some time, but has only recently been recognised as an antiageing treatment, and is now in high demand at cosmetic clinics around the world. So what is a Vampire Facial? In the quest against ageing, some people are turning to the same substance vampires use to stay forever young: blood. Don’t fret, they are not drinking it, but have their own blood harnessed and the plasma reintroduced into the desired areas of their face, neck or hands to revitalise their skin. It is a great treatment for maintaining that fresh look as your skin cells are re-energised, collagen production is boosted and the overall tone and texture of the skin is greatly improved. This medical grade facial treatment is more penetrating than a regular facial, but the recovery time is quick - clients can notice results in a couple of days. However, as this procedure causes a bit of light bleeding and swelling, the
social downtime is approximately forty eight hours, so you’ll want to wait a while before showing off your new and improved skin. The good news is that it is safe and there is no risk of an allergic reaction as one’s own cells are used in the skin treatment. Our clinic nurse draws a vial of the patient’s blood which is then spun to separate the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) from the red blood cells. The PRP is then applied topically to the skin during a Dermastamp treatment – a process in which the skin is perforated with near microscopic holes to allow the transdermal delivery of the PRP. The growth factors in the platelets work like “magic” to encourage increased collagen production and new blood flow to the area treated, resulting in younger appearing skin. Results last six months to a year. recovery of injured muscles and is fast becoming The treatment rejuvenates the skin and a popular cosmetic treatment, plumping up the enhances tissue regeneration, evening out the skin and reducing fine lines & wrinkles. overall complexion. Health & Beauty Ask OptomTom Your questions answered by the experts at Eyecare Eyewear
Contact Lenses to Treat Dry Eye While not appropriate for all patients with ocular surface dryness, some patients will benefit from the wearing of contact lens to improve dry eye symptoms. This treatment option is particularly useful for patients who complain of constant dry, gritty eyes particularly after blinking and eye rubbing. The contact lens creates a barrier between the cornea (clear window on the front of the eye) and the top eyelid. This treatment option works in a similar way to a Band-Aid applied over a skin abrasion. When combined with eye drops, the ocular surface will often heal much faster than if left exposed.
Bandage contact lenses can also be used for eye injuries including scratches to the eye, after foreign body removal or welding flash. Not only can healing be improved, patients usually report significantly less discomfort once the lenses are inserted. Eyecare Eyewear Got a question for OpTomTom? Ten Tips to Nourish Your Skin Often our diet and digestive health can be expressed through the health of our skin. If our skin is looking a little under the weather, then it’s likely that our body systems aren’t doing so well either. It is important to take note of what we eat if we want to maintain clear, nourished and youthful looking skin. Below are ten tips for improving our diet and thus the health of our skin, as recommended by Naturopath, Megan Douglas.
Antioxidants: Try to eat a diet rich in antioxidant foods; think brightly coloured fruits and vegetables. Bright orange fruits and vegetables assist in making healthy cells. Deeply coloured berries such as blueberries and cherries are loaded with antioxidants which will help your body fight off blemishes.
No Sugar: In the case of our skin, the high blood sugar we get from eating sweets and refined flour Fibre: Even healthy eating will benefit us little if attaches itself to collagen in our skin cells. H2O: Water helps to hydrate and plump up the skin, and flush toxins from the body. We should aim to drink around 1-2 litres of water a day, depending on our body weight, exercise levels and the prevailing climate.
Probiotics: Probiotics contain bacteria that not only help our skin look healthy, but also help us maintain a “healthy gut”. This is vital, because the majority of our immune system is located in our digestive system. As an aside, eczema sufferers

Winning designs for Dalby’s answer to ‘House Rules’

Winning design created clever use of space and enhanced external charm

Dalby’s impressive architectural style has once again been put on the map thanks to local designers, Martin Building Design, who recently picked up two awards for excellence at the Building Designers Association Queensland regional awards. Martin Building Design was recognised for their designs of a family home renovation in Dalby’s Myall Street and the new industrial Diesel Care building on Loudoun Road. Managing Director Arthur Martin said it was an honour to work on the Myall Street residence, for former owners Matthew and Kirsty Ostwald, which was an iconic local home originally built in the 1920s. “The home had been renovated around the early 1970s and had become very outdated; so the challenge was to retain and enhance the existing external charm while totally redesigning the interior to suit a modern family.”

Activate your 2014 Tax Refund!
P 4531 8090 F 4669 8821
It’s that time of year again when everyone asks how much will I get in my tax refund, but more importantly, what will I spend it on? It is often the case, that many people have their refund spent before they actually lodge their tax return. So, to eliminate disappointment, it is important to get the maximum tax refund you are entitled to.

Myall Precinct 66 Drayton Street Dalby Q 4405
Do you prepare and lodge your tax return yourself? This is a great way to save a few dollars on an accountant, but are you maximising your refund? The issue is that the Tax Pack can be full of jargon that is hard to decipher. You, the taxpayer, often miss extra deductions simply because the terminology used is not in plain English. Often, by engaging the services of a tax agent, you can return in excess of the cost of the accountant. Activate Accounting strives to maximise your tax refunds through a thorough step by step process. We use plain English so that you know exactly what you can and can’t claim on your tax return, and we suggest extra allowable deductions that you may not have previously known you could claim. If you would like to activate your 2014 Tax Refund with us, then ‘phone the team at Activate Accounting now on 07 4531 8090. You might not be cracking out the party poppers and sparkling wine as 1st July rolls around, but a new financial year is a great time to celebrate the successes of the previous 12 months and to plan ahead.

Bell Vet News Rat Bait Toxicity Warning! The mice are everywhere, and where there are mice, there is rat bait. This time of year, we see a lot of inquisitive dogs coming into the clinic with rodenticide toxicity from either eating straight bait or from eating dead/sick mice. Rodenticides work by preventing blood from clotting which is fatal for rats and mice, but can also be fatal for your dog or cat. Despite manufacturer claims that different rodenticides are “safe for dogs” – they are not actually pet safe! Sometimes, our pets are too inquisitive and wish to explore outside the fence or stray. This means, 3. that if other people find them, we need to be able to find their owner, i.e. you!
Contact the vet or pound to scan for a microchip in a found dog or report your dog missing – someone may have reported them found. Put up posters, flyers and ring veterinary clinics or businesses around the area. Veterinary Clinics cannot take animals due to not knowing their vaccination status. If you cannot care for the animal, take them to the pound or RSPCA so they can help find the owners.
Microchips, name tags and recognisable collars are a great idea. If you have found a lost dog or have lost your dog, there are a few steps you can Bell Veterinary Services follow:

Gardening
Jandowae and District Garden Club Inc. There will be no meeting in July. This can be a cold month to be out in the garden, so it is usual to bypass this month each year. The June visit to the garden of Trish Hendersen will be written up for the August Magazine. The members enjoyed their visit. On 27th May, 30 members of the Garden Club visited the adjoining gardens of Beryl McKenna and Evelyn Nauschutz.
Beryl McKenna’s Garden Beryl’s compact town block is edged with gardens mulched with hay and lined with rocks. The main front garden edges the footpath. An established Conifer presides over a fairly recently planted garden as the old Conifers had to be removed. The garden is coming along well, with a wide variety of plants and shrubs, including Agave, yellow flowering Daisy, Grevillea, lots of Lilies and Iris. Pink and mauve Petunias are scattered around bringing colour to the garden. White Assylum clumps add a contrast amongst the many plants. A Succulent with stunning, tall white flowers fills one corner of this delightful garden. Two gardens line the front of the house, filled mainly with pink and mauve Chrysanthemums, and a mauve Pom Pom variety. A tribe of frogs guard this garden. The Pencil Pine at the steps is like a sentinel. Another frog and a pelican guard the other side of the steps. The cement pathway up to the front steps divides this lovely area of green grass. The front corner of the house is shaded with an advanced Bottle Brush with many Zygo Cactus in pots growing well underneath on the ground or in pots on stumps.
Banksia Rose is being trained to grow up the old stump. Bearded Iris, Emu Bush, Lilies and Lilly Pilly are amongst the new plants. Colourful clumps of Petunias make a lovely show. A couple of old happy frogs jump up from this area. Closer to the road, a large windmill is a feature surrounded with a yellow flowering Hibiscus. Deep pink Bougainvillea and a pink foliage shrub fill this area. This garden then stretches to the far end of the house, filled with shrubs such as Westringia, May Bush, Hibiscus and a Grevillea to name a few. Ground cover such as Ribbon Plant, Iris and Lilies grow between the shrubs. The clumps of white Assylum are dotted around to good effect. The grey foliage of the advanced Conifer is a feature here. The garden ends with a large clump of double pink Daisies covered in blooms.
This part of the back garden is covered in thick green grass. One garden here is planted with clumps of Conifers. The bright green foliage is contrasted with the spreading grey branches of a smaller Conifer. The back corner garden is planted with Ribbon Plants, Lilies and a yellow flowering plant to name a few. The stunning Succulent in The northern side garden stretches from the road flower is a feature here. to the far end of the house. Part of this garden The southern side of the house has a pebbled is newly planted to a wide variety of plants, as garden at the back side door with hanging again the old Conifers here had to be removed. A baskets of Zygo Cactus in flower. The garden
continues with Sacred Bamboo, a large variegated leafed shrub leading up to pots of Zygo Cactus and Begonias. The final garden leads along from the shed to the road. A large deciduous shrub, with its leaves turning orange, grows in the corner with various Lilies and Iris leading up to the very healthy vegie patch. A wide variety of vegetables are planted here, some of which are Beans, Lettuce and Cabbages just beginning to heart up. The brilliant green of the parsley patch ends the vegetable garden. The garden then continues along to the road with large and small shrubs including bright orange Daisies and Lilies. The bright purple and deep pink of the Petunias scattered around make an attractive end to this garden. Thank you, Beryl, for having us to visit your garden. Chris from Dalby Landscapes and Gardens brought along some of his beautiful plants for sale. We found it very interesting to hear about newly released plants and how to deal with pests. ‘Thank you’ for coming, Chris! Alison Banks from the Western Downs Regional Council gave us an interesting insight into the work she does for Council for parks, gardens and playgrounds. ‘Thanks, Alison, for giving us your time’.
Evelyn Nauschutz’s Garden Evelyn’s garden was the result of a hive of activity. A lovely expanse of green lawn grows between the gardens. In the front side gardens, both fences were edged with Lilies, filling in the spaces between well-established shrubs, such as May Bush and the glossy green leaf of Hibiscus on the other side. The front fence was edged with curved gardens with brick borders and mulched with hay. A beautiful Palm is prominent in this garden, surrounded with a thick planting of small shrubs such as the miniature Bougainvillea dripping with purple flowers. Pony Tail plants in pots are scattered along the garden amongst Geraniums of various colours, yellow Daisies and Agapanthus to name a few. A brilliant orange flowering plant,
surrounded with double Petunias of various shades of pink and purple, make for a colourful show. A parrot on a stand is of interest here amongst Agave and variegated Mother-in-Law Tongue. The old wheelbarrow is a feature, filled with Petunias. A windmill on a stand is something different to catch the eye. A new circular garden has pride of place in the centre of the front garden and is exploding with a wide variety of plants including Granny’s Bonnet in flower, Bromeliads of many varieties and double Petunias flowering profusely. A small duck peeps out here.

This garden then leads up to the garden in front of the house where shrubs such as Duranta and Diosma are growing. Ground cover plants include Ribbon Plant, Agave and Lilies ending with pots of Zygo Cactus and Bromeliads at the front door. Two large trees shade the front of the house.

‘My View’
“What a Blast! What a Festival!” ‘My view’ from the New BIRD in Town... Once again, this magical, small town of Jandowae has blown me away and this time, all in a few days. Had been reading all the information and listening to people talking about this TIMBERTOWN FESTIVAL and I became very interested. You see, back when I was much younger, I was involved in Promotions, Tourism and Entertainment; so yes, this Festival caught my interest. Didn’t know who was going to organise all this as the Locals told me it was big. I was approached by some of the younger committee members to take part in some of the proceedings, so agreed to give it a go. Then came the day before the judging of the decorated tree event and that’s when I was first blown away. Almost went into shock at the quality of Imagination and Community Involvement at how many participated in this event. The quality of the decorated trees was outstanding and Jandowae should be very proud of the effort you guys put into it. In all my time, I have never seen anything like the standard that you produced. The State School, WOW! Congratulations on your wins, kids! So proud of you. Now comes the fun bit, where I did go into some sort of shock. I noticed all these numbers along the street and any person with a brain could have figured it out that it meant - Stall space, but come on, in this quiet small town, over 77 spaces, no way me thinks. Next day, I hopped on my trusty scooter and set sail down town, turned into the street where the cop shop is on the corner and in front of me were stalls right across the road.
incredible. Not to forget all the events that kept the show on the road, Craft Show with brilliant displays, the Art Exhibition which was held at the Domiciliary - what a show that was, then all the sporting events. Where did all these people come from? The music down at the showgrounds and then the Rodeo. Could go on and on - the Lions Markets, fantastic! I hope the chap who was hurt at the Rodeo has recovered from his injuries. Does get a bit rough out there, doesn’t it boys? Hey, you got a free ride in the chopper. Congratulations, everyone! Amazing organisation, Amazing Festival. See you all in two years. I’m sure everyone had a fabulous time at this wonderful Festival. Almost forgot to mention and haven’t been told how the Yabbi Races went. Would have liked to have seen that event. Did hear some of the busking and that attraction went off well. Also got to watch the children handling and playing with a variety of farm animals plus listened to the school kids singing, which sounded great. All the food stalls did a top job and the other stalls had just about everything you would like to buy. I managed to purchase a kid’s belt for my little buddy’s birthday. Hope you had a great day, Jack. There was so much more that kept the Festival flowing, including the Chain saw events and the sculpture was excellent. Very clever guys! Just so much to see over this weekend and sorry if I missed anyone or any event. You all did a fabulous job!
Again, ‘Congratulations’ to all the Committee who organized a fantastic Got a little closer so I could look up and down the street and that’s when my Festival! eye balls almost fell out onto my cheekbone. Was just sitting there with my Thanking you for having me in your town. Love it here. hands in my mouth making very weird sounds like OOOOOH— AAAAAH, when a stall holder asked me if I was Ok? Being ‘oldish’, I suppose he may have Hazel Bird thought I was chucking a mickey but I managed to say, “My goodness, how did this happen when yesterday it was clear?” He said, “Wait lady until you see down the other street,” and I said, “What? More?” Well, folks, I did manage to get over that and then found the lass (Gee! you did a great job, kiddo!) who was to show me what I was lined up to do. Found her, then was told I’d be with another lass who was doing the announcing and I was supposed to be her side kick. Get this, we were even given a golf-buggy to zip around in. Now come on, it wasn’t a GOLF vehicle, giggles, but a golf buggy. They forgot to tell me about the driver and how well she could drive; I even asked for a seat belt as I thought I was going to be sitting on the road somewhere. Kidding, she was just fine but it was different. Look, all in all, I experienced many interesting, fun things which happened that day. Must mention about the food stall down at the Rodeo where I was working with the incredible Jinghi CWA Ladies. Goodness, that was an experience, as we had the most hard working BBQ cooks, fun loving, tormenting blokes who kept me/us on our toes but what a great job they did! The thought of selling sweets as well was mind boggling, plus, who was going to cook all that, but these Ladies cooked it all and it was so delicious. Not too many people had to wait for burgers and we pushed hard to keep the line moving as too did the P and C workers next door to us. They must have been sick of chips by the time the night was over. Well done, everyone! In all my years, I have never been to such a well organised function with free flowing events for everyone. Congratulations to all of you! I take my hat off to these young ones who pulled off the best event ever and I have been involved with ever so many. THIS WAS THE BEST BY FAR! I cannot forget also those who helped in different ways behind the scenes and the Head of it all. Must mention how the festival site was always kept neat and tidy and was superbly cleaned up after the event. Good work! All the Children and Teachers from the School who participated - totally July 2014 - 41
