A Note From The Editor The office is feeling chilly in the mornings now, and many coffees are being consumed to warm up the girls left in the office - Kate, Karel and Amy. Jessica has now left us for her maternity leave with her brand new bub, Annabelle Eliza. Congratulations to Jessica and Malcolm from the Western Downs Magazines family and can’t wait until Jess is back (even though she’s only been gone for a week). In the meantime, we have been busy putting together the June edition of the Jandowae Mill! Check out the competitions that are running this month: Merivale Cakes & Training have a $400 wedding cake voucher on offer (page 18); Empire Theatre are offering two tickets to the Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase (page 15); and this month, we have a Western Downs Beautiful Babies Competition (page 14). Jandowae Business & Community Group Hello Jandowae. The time is near for us all to get excited as Timbertown is nearly on us. It’s never to late to volunteer your services to the hard working committee. It won’t be long and all the businesses and organisations will be decorating their tree; remember the theme is nursery rhymes. As some of you may have already seen in the Community Park the WDRC has started on the table area, which means it’s nearly time to have our community barbecue and Plant a Plant Day for community members who want to donate a shrub or bush and become part of the park. The park itself will be an information park more so than a children’s play area, for visitors and locals to read a bit about Jandowae whilst relaxing in the gardens. We will require a bit more funding to make this happen but it will happen (date to be advised).
in the WDRC. We have some exciting news for Jandowae in July. I can’t reveal it just yet, but it is going to be good for Jandowae and is the result of a lot of work and getting a reward for effort, and hopefully the beginning of a lot more good news to come. Remember if you want to get all the news, become a member for all the news and up coming events, and also you may have some initiatives for us to work on. Although I wasn’t there, I was told the Emergency Services Quiz night was a success and well done to the team who organised the evening at the Hall. Enjoy Timbertown and keep your eyes peeled for some up coming changes, our next meeting is Monday 10/06/14, See you there
The signage is nearly complete, just not quite “Jandowae - it’s a Great Place to be” ready for Timbertown. Again, let me thank Jess Flynn for her efforts in making them come Rick Hogarth to reality. They look really good and will give Business and Community Group President Jandowae a difference from all the other towns
Jandowae Cottage Craft Where has this last month gone? Only seems like yesterday I was writing up our last months report. Some of our members have been organizing the food, the Quilt display the stall holders and the decorations for “Decorate a Tree” competition This is part of the Timbertown celebrations. The Saturday craft is being well attended with the next one on the 14th June.

Once again, our Market Day, which was held on May 25, was really great. We had our usual stalls and we are so grateful for their ongoing support, but we were delighted to have another five new stalls and having something different, as their main lines did not interfere with our existing stalls anyway. The different stalls proved to be most successful and have indicated that they will be back. One of the new stalls was actually a remedial masseur and a number if those present enjoyed the benefits of his massages. Another interesting large stall was welcomed and this stall had a large presentation of ladies’ clothing that also proved quite popular.

We also ran a quick raffle. The raffle prize was a lovely fruit tray, which was provided by our fruit man, who runs the fruit and veggie stall at the markets. Kay Grundy won the prize, and no, it was not rigged! In fact, it was drawn by a customer at our barbecue, so congratulations Katie.

A lovely afternoon tea was had with the RVAD, where we provided them with a scrummy afternoon tea. We had catered for 138 people, and the sixty cars looked great around our ring road in the park. Some locals came along for a look, and yes, some of the cars did bring great rang memories. Warren Kearney, a local, provided some great music. Thank you Warren, this was much appreciated.

Another activity was for out Lions to support the Uniting Church with their Bazaar. President Ivan was able to take the Lions merry-go-round to the morning event and the children enjoyed lots and lots of rides. Two members from Lions will be taking the clubs chip machine to the Warra Races and will have a very busy and long day providing lots of hot chips for the race patrons in July. Timbertown is fast approaching and the Sunday will be busy for Lions, with the barbecue and donuts. We now have a Facebook page setup by a very kind person, and hopefully Facebook fans will have a glance at our photos, which Anne Wunch (a stall holder) is putting up for us. On the Timbertown weekend, Athlone Cottage will be open for inspection from 9am – 4pm Saturday, and 9am – 12 noon Sunday. A church service will be held at the Cottage site at 9am on the Sunday morning. Come along and stroll through the slab hut which was built by Paddy White in 1890. The original hut had one room and an ant bed floor. In 1930 it was extended to include a kitchen, bathroom, verandah and wooden floor. When the Jandowae Dam was constructed in the 1960s the cottage was moved across the road to the property “Athlone”. In 2001 the then owners of the property, Peter and Barbara Rathmell donated the cottage to the Progress and Heritage Association and it was moved to its present site. After restoration it was made open to the public in 2004. Since then our committee has acquired the shearers quarters from Ian and Heather Gall and the cream room from Harley and Lorna Walker. Both of these buildings will be open over the Timbertown weekend. Also on site is the first school building built in Jandowae in the late 1800s. This building has been used as a house for over 80 years and was donated by the owners Brendan and Maree Taylor. Much work will need to be done on it before it can be made open to the public. Weather boards have been purchased and any assistance either financial or voluntary help from the general public would be appreciated. Peter Ireland, President

Neighbourhood Watch The annual general meeting was held on the 20th May. Tony Brame resigned as Coordinator. Margaret Atkinson was elected as Coordinator, Margaret Atkinson was re-elected as Secretary, and Ray Polzin re-elected as Treasurer. Senior Constable Alan Ward emphasised the need for car owners to attend to any noisy/modified exhausts. Repairs can be expedited by Motor and Tractor in Market St or Wayne’s Mobile Solutions in High St. Failure to do so will result in a defective notice being issued and if not rectified a fine of $110 will be imposed. Our local Jandowae Police now have the ability to easily enforce speed limits with recently acquired hand held radar device supported with a Radar testing range. A request to Western Downs Regional Council to have more traffic parking lines painted outside the Police Station and Post Office was refused as was the Disabled Parking spots, due to extra cost of maintenance. The next Neighbourhood Watch meeting will be held on the 19th August at the Cultural Centre. Due to the slight increase in crime in Jandowae, residents are urged to attend the meeting and learn about steps that can be taken to ensure your property and belongings are safe. New members are made very welcome with supper and social chat after each meeting. When possible, a guest speaker will attend the meeting. Margaret Atkinson Coordinator/Secretary

Cake Decorating Classes – Practise Makes Perfect! In 2009 when Mary Reid and Cheryl Stace opened Merivale Cakes and Crafts at Highfields, the super hype surrounding the current cake decorating revolution was just starting. In the 5 years since they began teaching their Sugarcraft range at their Highfields cake studio they have introduced over 50 different classes, presented up to 70 certificates each year and have taught over 200 students (with some travelling from as far as Emerald, Roma and Townsville. Merivale’s training portfolio ranges from beginner, intermediate to advanced, with some custom-designed classes (to suit the individual skills needed) and user choice (where students can choose the mix of skills that they wish to advance). Delivery options include day, evening, week day and weekend classes and small class sizes which allows for maximum attention for students. In August and November 2014 Merivale will run beginner classes in Chinchilla. With many western Queensland students travelling to Highfields for classes, Merivale has decided to run two trial workshops in Chinchilla to see if there is a market for further classes in rural communities.

However Merivale do a lot more than create amazing cakes for clients and run a school. They are also very active in using their craft to support the community. On an annual basis, they run demonstrations for schools and community groups, creates cakes for charities, provide sponsorships for the Brisbane Ekka, Toowoomba and Goombungee Shows, and conduct community workshops at the annual Cobb & Co Museum Have-A-Go festival and the Highfields Cultural Centre. Recently Mary negotiated an agreement with three rural shows to provide sponsors and judging until 2016. Merivale conduct a range of business development classes and mentors a group of advanced students who are almost ready to open new business ventures of their own. To accelerate the skilling for these students Merivale organises workshops (in Highfields and Melbourne) with some Australian and world class Sugarcraft specialists and authors to teach at their Highfields studio. The success of Merivale’s Sugarcraft classes can be measured by their students’ results from the regional and Royal shows and the international expo competitions and tours that they organise. During the 2014 Toowoomba and Goombungee shows students achieved over 30 awards; and at the UK 2012 and 2013 international cake decorating competitions students won a combined 9 awards. These are amazing results particularly as the competition pieces were transported safely half way across the globe and in light of the high standard of entries, against very experienced decorators. These achievements are truly inspiring and they are from a local Highfields business………. which is passionate about passing on the art of cake decorating to all aspiring students. From Where Did all the Timber Come? While looking at the older houses in Jandowae the question comes to mind, “if the first sawmill in Jandowae was opened in 1913, where did the timber in all the houses and buildings built previously come from?”. Some of the early establishments surely would have been built from locally hewn wood.
The men of those days knew their animals capabilities and would have worked with in those parameters…one would expect.

In 1923, Lars Andersen built a mill on the eastern side of the Bunyas at Wengenville and he developed a system of winders, winches and flying foxes connected to a 670m tramway which got the logs to the mill in a few minutes. They arrived to perfect condition. Sometime after that, mills were opened at Munros Camp and The Lucerne Patch (Dandabah) on the mountains themselves. The last of them closed in 1950. The Mill at Wengenville, closed in 1961 and so ended nearly 100 years of timber milling in the George Wassell Sr stacking timber, Moran Creek saw Bunya Mountains. mill, 1940s The first trees used for timber were the hardy red cedars which grew prolifically on and around the mountains. The sawn timber was initially cut in sawpits which consisted of the pit dug in the ground where the pitman stood and worked the bottom end of a pit saw. It’s not hard to imagine the sawdust that fell on his head in this operation. I’m not sure what qualifications got you into the pit. Perhaps the men changed positions during the day. Unfortunately there seems to be no enduring record of any of them. But I am sure I will be notified in due course about one or two of them. You may get some more history of timber milling around this old town during the festival. I understand there will also be a timber milling display by Darcy Maunder on his portable mill. Enough sawdust there for you to respect the pitmen of old. Timbertown is a chance for all of us to re-acquaint ourselves with the history of timber and its contribution to the wealth and growth of Jandowae and district. I recommend it most enthusiastically. Kindy Kapers What a fantastic night out at the LAC/Kindy Quiz Night. We had a record number of teams dressing up, my favorite were the Smurfs. The squiggle entries were also better than last year with a greater variety of ideas the judges had a very hard time choosing between the entries. Congratulations to the 4 Stars winning the event by one point. Our thanks go to Mandy Heath our fundraising coordinator for helping arrange the quiz night. We hope that everyone enjoyed their night and will be back next year. We will be having an official opening of the Kindy where the general public can come along and have a look at the new and improved Kindy. Details at a later date, at the moment we are swamped organizing Timbertown and Trail bike ride. Spread the word to anyone you know that would be interested in attending the Jandowae Trail bike Ride. It is on again this year on the 5th and 6th of July. As always there will be great tracks for the different age and skill levels. I am sure that the food will be excellent (not biased at all) Come along and support the Kindy and Jandowae school all funds raised go to much needed equipment for the local children. If you can volunteer some time please contact myself and I will ensure you get on a roster.

Group B Group B News We have had doctors, policemen and firefighters at Kindy! The children have been dressing up and roleplaying emergency situations. We have recently practiced our fire drill and are currently learning more about emergency situations. We have been discussing what we know about these occupations and learning about what how these people can help us in the event of an emergency. The children have also been sharing their knowledge with their peers during group discussions, such as when Jaxson told us there is a ‘machine’ that breaks a car if you are stuck and cannot simply open a door (jaws of life). We will continue to learn more about how these professionals help us aiding in the development of their dramatic play.
Our capsicum and cucumber plants are doing very well and have provided us with lots of vegies to cook with. Together we decided what ingredients we’d use to make pizzas. Just recently, we were able to pick off a few lemons so we will be able to cook with these soon as well. To help celebrate our lovely mothers we hosted a morning of ‘pampering’ where the children were able to paint mum’s nails, do mum’s hair, do mum’s make-up, make a crown and paint mum a portrait. Fun was had by all at this event for Mother’s Day. Courtney Webster, Connie Yard and Rhiannon Staines

The zodiac excursions included landing at penguin colonies, research stations, historical sites, abandoned whaling stations and cruising amongst stranded icebergs. Our days started at 4.00am and finished around 10.30pm. We were very fortunate to get five fine days in a row, the average is about two out of five. This did cut out a lot of the instructional and seminar time, which was planned for the days when the weather turned bad, but nobody minded. Arriving home I had the enviable task of working through over 4000 images (which is still a work in

Question: I keep seeing these ads on TV. What is my macular and why do I need to get it checked? The macular is the central area of the retinal at the back of your eye responsible for high resolution or detailed sight. It is a highly organized structure and unfortunately, easily prone to damage from accumulations of cellular debris and leaky new blood vessels. This is called Macular Degeneration or MD. Further information can be found at: www. mdfoundation.com.au While MD is a devastating problem for sufferers, it is also quite a problem for our society as well. A recent study called and commissioned by Novartis Pharma and conducted by Deloitte Access economics (Eyes on the Future) estimated that the total societal cost of vision impairment and blindness from all forms of AMD in Australia was slightly more than $5 billion per year. So do it for yourself or for Australia and get your macular checked. Eyecare Eyewear

Dry Skin Season With winter fast approaching, dry skin problems are beginning to emerge along with colds and flu. Low humidity and low temperatures and even hotter showers exacerbate the problem and make people more vulnerable to other skin conditions as well. So, let’s think about prevention. We’ve all heard that regular soap disturbs the natural skin pH. We are quick to recommend a neutral pH soap alternative as part of the treatment for fungal and bacterial infections, excema and dermatitis. However, even those of us with healthy skin should use something like this all the time. The Ego range of therapeutic skin products have been produced right here in Australia for more than 60 years. We can be really proud of their success and pharmacies are always keen to support local companies when many of our medicines are imported. Their entire therapeutic range is fragrance free and suitable for sensitive skin. You are probably familiar with the QV range, but this is more extensive than before and has three levels of intensity. The normal QV wash and lotion are ideal for the average person who doesn’t normally suffer from skin problems. QV Gentle wash is the one we would recommend for the person with a skin problem or particularly dry and sensitive skin, and for those with very dry skin, there is QV intensive wash and lotion which has the highest concentration of glycerin. The other big winter problem faced here are horrible, dry, sore cracked hands which seem so difficult to heal up and makes work difficult for so many people. For years we relied on BOZ cream, or lanolin or urea cream. Now there are formulations for cracked feet which combine lanolin and urea such as foot balms, and for the heavy duty cracked hand problems in Jandowae, this is the ideal formulation. We had a recommendation last year from a customer and have since seen great success with Du’it Tough Hands Intensive repair. It has urea in as one of its active ingredients, but also provides a barrier from moisture with dimethicone. have one of these cracked hand remedies on hand to fix them before they We encourage you to think ahead and try to prevent problems before they develop into deep, painful wounds. start by changing to soap free washes and adopting a moisturising regime Sharon Baker to protect the skin. Also, if it is something that happens to you every year, Jandowae Pharmacy

Cosmetic Elegance Clinic Turns 7! Seven years ago Dr Eddie Roos realised a long held dream. “I saw the synergy that could occur by combining a medical skin practice with a beauty salon: medical treatments with the best cosmetic outcome in mind. It was a new concept at the time but I truly believed patients would benefit from a more holistic approach to skin care. With a dream and a business plan, Cosmetic Elegance Clinic was born.” Now, seven years later, the clinic has grown beyond Dr Roos’ expectations. It is a comprehensive skin clinic, encompassing cosmetic and beauty treatments, a world class laser clinic and, with his special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer, a wellrespected skin cancer clinic too. “But we couldn’t have got to where we are today without our dedicated staff,” said Dr Roos. “Together we aim to provide our clients with skin care that is uncompromising in its professionalism and quality, in a comfortable and personal environment.” Cosmetic Elegance Clinic is serious about Gil Campbell said, “We believe in an age of we endeavour to answer any skin concerns and skin care, with a passion for their treatments increasing technology that personalised service questions no matter how big or small.” and love for what they do. Practice manager is imperative. Our clients’ needs come first, and Cosmetic Elegance Clinic

Stress – It Can Affect Us All The founder of World Organic, Megan Douglas, has been kind enough to provide me with the following information to help some of my readers cope and deal with stress. Stress affects many of our friends and family members and the effects it has on our overall well-being and physical health can be detrimental. How To Manage Stress: It is important to remember that stress need not affect us in a negative way. It is created by our reaction to situations and not by the situation itself. If we can temper our reactions, if we can manage life’s roller-coaster with a degree of equanimity and perspective, then we can minimize the adverse consequences of stress.
THE EFFECTS OF STRESS MIND • • • • •
Insomnia, nightmares, disturbing dreams Difficulty concentrating, racing thoughts Trouble learning new information Difficulty in making decisions. Forgetfulness, disorganization, confusion Little interest in appearance,
Stress management tips that may help you:
•

BODY
•
First and foremost, know what your stressor is! Too often, people accept that they are stressed without taking the time to properly think through exactly what it is that is making them stressed. Anything can cause you stress – your work, your relationships, your body image, even the poor performance of your favourite sports team. Learn to identify what is making you stressed. It’s a necessary first step in dealing with the problem. Try meditation. The benefits of meditation are vast. If you’ve got the time, have a look at our blog on meditation in the ‘Soul’ section of our website. The simple action of breathing in a meditative state will add oxygen to your system and will bring you a measure of focus and control.
•
Moderate your consumption of alcohol and/ or cigarettes. They’re crutches. They might dull the feeling of stress in the short term, but they do nothing to help the problem and have their own health-related costs.
•
Live well. Get a good night’s rest (seven hours minimum), eat healthily, exercise, pamper yourself occasionally, make time for family and friends, get a pet (if you like animals!). All of these things have been • shown to help mitigate against stress.
•
Know your limits and be prepared to either say no or get help. It’s when we take on too much that we’re most likely to experience stress.
•
Try hypnotism. Like meditation, hypnotism can be particularly useful in helping you manage the causes and symptoms of stress.

Feeling overloaded or overwhelmed. Frequent crying spells or suicidal thoughts Feelings of loneliness or worthlessness Increased frustration, irritability, edginess Overreaction to petty annoyances
Have a look at our ‘Mind’ blog to discover the many benefits it can offer. Look after your skin. When you become stressed, the amount of blood and oxygen which is supplied to your skin lessens dramatically. As a result, your skin will often take on a grey pallor and become dry, flaky and prone to irritation. When this happens, it is as important to care for your skin as it is for your general physical and emotional self. Take the time to cleanse and moisturize, and even visit a masseur if you can. Hopefully,

we don’t need to tell you that your skin will repair itself much more quickly if you use natural, organic products rather than synthetic ones! So, there you have it. It’s highly unlikely, unless you live in a cocoon, that you can avoid stress. However, if you opt for a thoughtful, balanced approach to life you can manage it and you can master it. In the end, that’s a much more desirable option than having it master you. Chantahl Stedman

My Midwives Rural Outreach Darling Downs My Midwives is a Midwifery Group Practice based in Toowoomba. We opened in December of 2010 as the first practice of its kind in Australia. . We provide antenatal care and postnatal care in the community and labour and birth care at Toowoomba Hospital where we have admitting rights. All our midwives are able to order pathology and diagnostics and many are able to prescribe. We provide two main services – continuity of midwifery care where a woman sees the same midwife throughout the continuum from early pregnancy to six weeks after birth with the midwife on call for labour and birth care and a bulk billed services where a team of midwives provides the care.
Chinchilla in conjunction with medical care of the woman’s choice if required or desired. ¬This care may be in a shared model with the woman’s GP, in a shared model with the woman’s birthing hospital or with a private obstetrician. The midwife can book women into their birthing hospital, provide comprehensive care and education, order and interpret pathology and radiology as required and conduct assessments of fetal wellbeing using a CTG as required. All documentation will be shared with the woman’s consent, with her GP and birthing hospital. If the woman desires, she may additionally access continuity of care from one of the midwives for birth care in Toowoomba Hospital.
with minimal out of pocket costs. Similarly to GP services, consultations are time based with the majority of consultations being from 40 minutes to one hour. Again, depending on the consultation, the woman may come to central clinics (one each in Millmerran, Inglewood and Chinchilla) which will be established during the project or may receive a home visit from the midwife (depending on their location). Women who require out of hours services may contact the My Midwives on call phone for additional care if appropriate. Women requesting continuity of midwifery care for birth will additionally have access to their own midwife out of hours.
The My Midwives Rural Outreach – Darling Downs project has been funded by Medicare Local. The program will provide antenatal and postnatal care in three areas – Millmerran, Inglewood and

Notices Green Thumb Express I would like to offer my sincere thanks to the number of people who have already contributed an overwhelming number of plants and cuttings for this project. So far hundreds of plants have been distributed across drought-stricken areas of Queensland, to help revive gardens devastated by the drought. Plants will be collected until the end of August, so please share any bulbs, cuttings or small plants that have come up after the rain, with those who desperately need them. Please contact: Kay Blanch at “Glenfillan”, 2557 Jandowae – Kingaroy Road, Jandowae 4410, Ph: 07 4668 6165.
