Jandowae 80’s Flashback Fun Run and Oktoberfest Race day at the Jandowae Race Course looked went down. Run by the P & C, the celebrations a little different on Saturday, 18th October. included international beer tasting and Noah’s Thoroughbred Pig Racing. However, it was just as colourful. They swapped the colts and fillies for the “Fluro Floozies”, the “G-String Riotards” and the ”Baywatch Babes” as Jandowae turned back time for the 80’s Flashback Fun Run. 100 runners braved the hot conditions to complete three laps of the Jandowae Race Course, either as a relay team, as an individual or simply for fun.

Auctioneer, Aaron Ryan, really brought the crowd together as he called the pig races. Although the pig owners tried very hard to instruct their pigs on which direction to run, it came to no avail. This did not stop them trying though. 4

The Crowe Hogwath Express pig was awarded the most milk for the night, winning four out of the six races. Local sponsor, Michael Wood Electrical, will need to put a little bit more spark into his Alfred pig before the 2015 race day!

If running 5km isn’t hard enough alone, they also had to overcome 4 obstacles; the Tyre of terror, the buzz trap, the cowboy climb and scale the bale. Runners ran to the beat of the 80’s DJ music, with a few even resembling Rod Stewart The event could not have been run without and Olivia Newton-John! the support of its valuable sponsors: Agrifoods Australia, Michael Wood Electrical, Pacific Seeds, The winners were: Landmark Dalby, Crowe Horwath, Ainsworth’s • Men’s Individual – Danny Wassell Chinchilla, Syngenta, Philp Brodie Grains, Wood • Ladies’ Individual – Lisa Howard Ag, Black Truck & Ag, Nufarm, National Australia • Open Team – The Palace Team - Matty Bank, Horizon Commodities, Jandowae Business Wassell, Alan Davis, Ben Horrigan Group, Morrissey and Co, Elders Jandowae, • Women’s Team – Fluro Floozies Team - Bec Nelson Family Meats, Jandowae Hotel Motel, Meynink, Gillian Bassingthwaighte and Jandowae Pharmacy, One Tree and Jandowae Mandy Heath. Bell Art Group Celebrates Second Anniversary and Art Calendar Launch Artists around the district showed off their paintings at the opening of the second anniversary exhibition at Bluebelles Art Gallery on Saturday. The Bell and District Art Group also launched its latest art calendar The Wonder of Down Under to celebrate its golden anniversary in 2015. Featuring paintings of 15 local artists the calendar runs from December 2014 to February 2016 and is available from the Bell Bunya Community Centre.

1

Mayor Ray Brown opened the exhibition before artists and art lovers wandered around the gallery viewing the 80 paintings on display including the 15 original paintings reproduced in the calendar. Most of the paintings are for sale including the calendar originals. Bell artist Cathy McClelland was presented with life membership of the Bell and District Art Group. Outside the building patrons wandered around the market stalls with hand-made items, jewellery, handbags, scarves, plants and books and inside they enjoyed morning tea while listening to John Hope playing old time tunes on his squeezebox. The exhibition will continue until the end of November and is open from 10am to 3pm daily. Nancy Evans - Story & Photographs

‘How many streets in Bell Township (Qld)?’ was always going to be a question that would potentially cause controversy at the Bell Junior Show’s Trivia Night on Saturday. The night was well attended with 14 teams playing along to four rounds of 15 questions to take out the winning prize money. But the team that was to come in at the bottom didn’t miss out on a prize, taking home the wooden spoon. Each round saw round winners take out a prize donated by the Bell Vet Services and as the rounds progressed, the competition increased. All in all, a good night was had and we would like to thank our sponsors: 3 Street Trivia, Bellview Hotel, Bell Store, Bell Veterinary Services, Black Truck and Ag, McInnis Plant Hire, Heidi’s Face Painting, Dalby Cleaning and Catering Supplies, Frank and Stella and JJ Richards and Sons. Of course, the event would not have been possible without our volunteers who helped prepare the food, set up tables and chairs, stocked fridges, shopped and then cleaned up on Sunday. A very successful night all round! Casey Laffy and Todd Williams, Bell Junior Show Committee

Jandowae Scouts

New camp shirts Hello! again as we move towards the end of the year. SCOUTS in Jandowae....Joeys, Cubs and Scouts.....the group is slowly growing. The group is overall learning and having fun whilst gaining and understanding the Scouting principles. Obviously, the older youth members are expected to begin a journey of understanding what it is to become self-sufficient and to ‘stand on their own two feet’ - Being Prepared for life.

Recently, a group of Cubs and Scouts attended the JOTI/JOTA activities held with Dalby and other Darling Downs youth members. They had a great time with the Jamboree of the Air reserved air ways communications with Scouts throughout the Southern Hemisphere time zones. Jandowae Uniting Church News Saturday, 18th October, saw members of our church helping out at the 80s Fun Run held by the Jandowae P-10 School Parents and Citizens Assn. and the Chaplaincy Committee to raise much needed funds. We helped with organising the event, manning the water station during the race, etc. and catering. The 80s costumes worn by many of the competitors were a sight to be seen. It was also an opportunity for Matt Stoner, School Chaplain, to meet members of our community. A big “thank you” to all who helped make the day a success!

Operation Christmas Child puts smiles on faces, bringing hope and joy to children in need, with gift-filled shoeboxes. A total of 1996 shoeboxes have been packed from our region so far. This includes shoeboxes from Chinchilla, Tara, Meandarra, Jandowae and Dalby areas. That is 1996 children who will be impacted with a shoebox in the following months. Each year, more and more people are supporting this amazing project and we want to say ‘thank you’ to those in our region who have participated this year in the world’s largest children’s project.

There are only two more ‘Get Togethers’ left before the end of the year - Friday, 14 November and Friday, 12 December. We are hoping to have a Christmas theme for the December gathering. Everyone welcome, 9am – 12md.

Jandowae Cottage Craft Our Club is in wind down mode at the moment as we only have three more days left for this year. Our break up is on the 28th November. Two of our ladies travelled down to Crows Nest on the 4th October for the Fresh Hopes fifteen years’ celebrations. It was a very rewarding afternoon, as we had a tour of the facilities and met some wonderful people who help run the organization. We also had a delicious afternoon tea that was prepared and served by the mothers who are in rehabilitation. Each mother gave their testimony and then, with their children, presented a musical item for us. On the 24th, some of our members visited Taralga again. We enjoyed our morning with the residents. We are hoping to make this a regular event next year. Community

At present, the service is actively seeking new members to be trained in the functions we currently provide in Jandowae. Our reserve and active ranks require new members. If we cannot train and maintain members in town we will lose the use of certain functions such as the flood boat. If anyone in the community has ever thought about volunteering, now is the time you are needed by your town. SES volunteers are ‘ordinary people doing extraordinary things’. They are empowered through quality training to help themselves and others in their community in times of emergency and disaster. They are well respected within their communities and experience the satisfaction of helping their communities and working as part of a skilled team.

Queensland SES volunteers receive world class training in a range of disciplines, providing them with real life skills which are used during emergencies, and knowledge that stays with them throughout their lives. The Queensland SES has a role for people with a broad range of talents and expertise. A level of physical fitness is needed in some roles within the S.E.S., especially when involved in rescues, responding to natural disasters and performing other critical roles. However, roles of administration, communications, stores and welfare do not necessarily require this level of fitness and there is a part everyone can play in keeping the community well prepared and safe. SES Jandowae

The role of SES volunteers is vital to the safety of people, properties and communities in times of emergency and disaster. SES volunteers are people who care about their communities. Whether helping people after a storm or natural disaster, assisting at a road crash, searching for a missing person, responding to a range of other incidents or assisting with non-emergency activities, such as public education displays or delivery of safety awareness presentations, SES members are there when their community needs them most. The SES is a volunteer-based organisation that is designed to empower people to help themselves and others in their community in times of emergency and disaster. The basic concept of the SES is one of self-help and mutual assistance within each community. This concept involves the community in all aspects of disaster and emergency activity, including prevention, preparation, response and recovery measures that will help protect the community when disaster strikes. Landcare News Some of us have been lucky to jag some storms over the last couple of weeks. These will spark up the growth of summer weeds. I would like to remind everyone that the Brigalow Jimbour Floodplain Landcare group has equipment for hire to help control weeds, deep rip to allow the moisture into the soil and to replant pastures. We have for hire: two Ute slip-on spot sprayers, a Yeoman’s Plough that can be configured for pasture renovation or for the removal of plough pan layers in cropping country. We also have a grass seed planter. Any inquiries, please contact Phil (Project Coordinator). The Worrisome Weeds project is still going. There is funding for the control of weeds and riparian fencing. This project is targeting the control of weeds of national significance such as Lantana, Box thorn, Tree pear. If you are considering any weed control on your property this summer, please contact the Project Coordinator, Phil, and we can discuss how Landcare can help you. This month saw our Regional Landcare Facilitator, Nicole Gammie, move onto bigger and brighter things. We wish her all the best for her future endeavours and look forward to meeting our new RLF. We have applied for funding through the 25th Anniversary of Landcare Grant for the control of erosion, especially caused by the flooding events. This project will focus on the establishment of grass to stabilize soils and to trap silt. If there are any landholders who are interested in establishing grass on their property, please either contact the project coordinator or send in an expression of interest form to BJFG Landcare. We will find out in early December if we have been successful for the funding. It will be a case of ‘first in best dressed’, so book your place now. Jandowae Jammin’ Well, ‘Hello, Groovers and Groupies!’ It was a well attended event again in Jandowae; about 57-60 people in total, and a little down in numbers, but I guess harvesting played a part in lack of numbers; I was brought up ‘work first, play second’. I actually missed most of this session as there was secret men’s business to do at home.

Brazier, who I’m very grateful for doing the job (Thank You!). I heard he may have gone to bed early that Sunday night, as it is a busy afternoon, chasing all the talent of the local district up and having them be snappy about getting on with the show. Thank you, Mum and ladies, for your effort in setting up and cleaning up our ‘smoko’. As usual, there were a number of tables with a feast on them and a stage with a variable feast of talent, which helps to make the whole event come to life. Remember, if you know anyone with some sort of talent, bring them along and give it a go. No one at the session bites; it is all about giving it a ‘go’ and the social aspect. Come one, come all and make some noise!!!

The next session is Sunday, 9th November, 2014, So, after setting up, from 1pm to 5pm, with a gold coin donation and I had to depart and a plate of goodies. leave it to the MC, Rob Rick Hogarth

Jandowae and District Garden Club Inc. We enjoyed our visit to the garden of John and Jenny Aldridge in Jandowae. They made us very welcome. ‘Thank you’ to you both for inviting us to visit your garden. Our November meeting will be our Christmas meeting on Tuesday 25th November at the Jandowae Library Reading Room. Bernice Danahey from “Red Fox Pataya”, Nanango will have her Dragon Fruit plants for sale and will speak about this amazing plant and its fruit. Lindley Wolski will also have his beautiful plants for sale. We start at 11 a.m. Please bring a mug, chair and Christmas lunch to share. We will have our usual Christmas multidraw raffle. All are welcome. Helen Cronin

Jandowae Business & Community Group

Once again we had great markets on the fourth Sunday of October. Good stalls, good sfood with good people patronising our markets. The kids really do love the merry-go-round. Our raffle was well supported and the lovely meat tray purchased from the local butcher proved to be very popular and was won by Paul Price. Good on you Paul! I would also like to mention that all proceeds from our market day raffles always go to Careflight in support of their great work.

Hello, Jandowae, and welcome to the November prior to the next meeting so we can place it on our time schedule / agenda. The next meeting issue of your Business and Community Group. will be on the 4th November, 2014, at 6.30pm. Once again our club members have had quite a busy month, with our regular fortnightly dinner meetings. We have helped at the Chaplaincy Fun Run at the showgrounds, cooking lots of hot chips. I am sure that the event turned out to be very successful. On 23rd October our Lions Club held a Seniors Service Day in the garden of Kay and Ivan Grundy. Everyone enjoyed their Devonshire morning tea, going home with a small gift and a single serve of Lions cake. This day was always called World Service Day, but as we are the only Lions Club doing this, we have decided to continue this tradition and will now call it “Senior Service Day”. We are gearing up for the 5th December which is our “Lions Christmas Fun Night” that has been held for a number of years in our Lions Park. It is a very busy time for us and we have decided that we are unable to support the 31st October event, but we have decided to support the Scouts with a direct donation. Our programme for Fun Night will be many stalls, entertainment, music, raffles, a barbecue, fairy floss, donuts and much more. It is Melbourne Cup time again and our Lions annual Melbourne Cup Sweep has been well supported again, so good luck to the winners. See you at our next markets on the fourth Sunday in November. We won’t be having markets in December this year, but will be back bright eyed and bushy tailed in 2015. Our Lions Club members would like to wish one and all a safe and happy festive season. Fairyland ... (continued) Last week, I was researching the early days of Jingi Jingi Station (correct spelling, by the way) and I came across a notice of transfer way back in 1858...and that is 1858, not 1958. It read: ‘Moreton Bay Courier’, Wednesday, May 19th, 1858 transfer from James Ivory of Jingi Jingi, Pelican, Seven Oaks and Fairyland to J. B. Watt James Ivory was the second name associated with Jingi Station. The first was Joseph King. According to the NSW Government Gazette, Joseph King owned the lease on Jingi back in 1848. There is no record I can find of the date the lease transferred from King to Ivory. One assumes Mt Ivory to the east of town was named after James. It most certainly would have been part of the original Jingi run. And part of the whole deal was Fairyland. My next assumption is that Fairyland was part of the original Jingi run before then. Not sure who will argue that with me, but I live in hope. Still not sure how it got the name. But there are other threads and sometimes these lead back to the dead end. Patience is the key. And the best way to get patience is to turn off the computer and do something completely different.

Kindy Kapers A huge thank you must go to the local trail bike ride committee for their recent donation to the Kindy for volunteering at the trail bike ride in July this year. I recently attended a meeting to collect our donation from the committee, and these funds will go towards the finalisation of our renovation and extension. We held an open day at Kindy on 5th November from 9am until 11am. This was a great opportunity for children and their families to come and explore the Kindy and see what a fantastic facility we have in Jandowae. We are now taking enrolments for 2015, so if you have a pre-prep or three year old child wishing to attend Kindy next year, we need you to register your child’s name on the list. If you missed the open day you can still come in after Kindy hours to have a look around. If you would like to do this, please contact the Kindy. Enrolments are filling for spaces in 2015, so to ensure you get the day/s you would like your child to attend, it is important that you contact the Kindy on 07 4668 5665 as soon as possible. We are meeting with representatives from C&K this week to go through the financial aspects of the Kindy operations; this is another step in the application process to become a branch of C&K, and is one of the last aspects of the application process. We should have a decision in this regard prior to the end of the year. We have postponed the Kindy Cocktail Night until next year as there are already so many events prior to the initial proposed date in November. We are now thinking to hold this event early in 2015. Watch this space for a new date to be announced. We are still working on our landscaping at Kindy and I would like to make special mention of the many, many hours that Kindy parent Jill Alexander has put into the gardens at the Kindy. Jill has recently been working on our front entrance, planting some hardy native plants. Once again, any donations of native plants and shrubs would be greatly appreciated. Group A News Summer is almost upon us and so are the dangers that this season brings… snakes and the harsh hot sun. This month, our keen little investigators have been busy doing research about snakes that live in Australia. We have looked at snake safety, dangerous snakes in our region, habitats and characteristics including size, colour and scale patterns. The children have enjoyed watching documentaries and looking at photos found on the internet. We have also experimented with snake colours and patterns through artistic mediums and further developed circular cutting skills when we challenged the children to make their own coiled snake.

We will continue to work on this project and consider how to make the icecream shop even better! This socio-dramatic play is necessary and valuable for young children’s development as they connect and build upon literacy and numeracy knowledge, engage in creative thinking and learn to collaborate and negotiate with peers.

So, as we watch our step and keep a look out for snakes this summer, we are also learning to take responsibility for our own and other’s sun safety. We have developed a poster to remind us to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide and drink plenty of water. Group B News Jandowae Kindergarten has started off Term 4 with a first-hand look into our Emergency Services. In week two, we went on an excursion to the Jandowae Hospital. The nursing staff took us on a tour of the Hospital, showing us the purpose of various pieces of equipment and then served us a lovely morning tea. ‘Thank you’ very much to the Jandowae Hospital for allowing us to visit and for making the excursion an informative experience for the children.

During week three, we had the Jandowae SES and Constable Allan Ward make visits to Kindy. The children learnt about what they should do during a flood or storm, what the potential dangers are and how they can stay safe. The SES team allowed the children to hop into their boat which was a ‘big hit’. Constable Allan Ward talked to the children about his job as a police officer. We learnt so much about a police officer’s role and the importance of their job within the community. ‘Thank you’ to the Jandowae Police and the SES team for making the time continue our scientific explorations over the coming weeks. to come and see us. to ensure that the ‘steers’ you buy have been castrated correctly. If they haven’t been done at an early age and correctly, more times than not, they can develop ‘extra male characteristics’. If this occurs, when marketed to most feedlots or bullock fatteners, these ‘bully types’ will either be rejected or discounted heavily. I will continue to outline aspects of backgrounding steers in the next edition. However, in the When compared on a financial basis, the heifer meantime, if you have any questions relating to option certainly requires less capital to buy in than Do I have a bull on the property and if so, can backgrounding or any other livestock related the steer option, but in my view, for a producer I keep him separate from them? queries, please contact the livestock team at who is looking for consistency in market and isn’t Landmark Dalby. The Backgrounder must be vigilant in his or her purchases and certainly have a goal or target market that they are looking to market into. There are also other aspects to consider as a profitable backgrounder, such as, do I buy steers, or do I buy heifers? With this are more considerations - especially with heifers which at certain times seem like a cheaper option. Issues such as: • •

When deciding to buy a breed of cattle to background, it certainly pays to firstly base your decision on the type of country you are grazing, and secondly, how long do you want to own them? This period of ownership should be based on the average daily weight gain of your cattle and the market you decide to target. From a marketing perspective, there are more options for steers than heifers when backgrounded to heavier weights. Quite briefly, a heifer can be grown out to a live weight of 320 to 420kg curfewed and be marketed to an array of feedloters. With reference to breed types, the heifers with high content of Brahman and full blood shorthorns will, at times, be harder to get premiums for than e.g. Angus, Santa, Hereford, Charolais, Droughtmaster and their crosses. There certainly is, at times, an opportunity to grow your heifers out to heavier or ‘bullock’ weights of approx. 400-500kg curfewed, milk to two tooth with the occasional four tooth being accepted depending on entry requirements on the day. Breeds of heifers that are seen as more suitable for this market are Euro cross, Santa cross, Droughty cross and some British types. Remembering, if you want to be a ‘Backgrounder’ and supply these types, you must deliver the heifers, pregnancy tested empty.

It should outline what services will be provided (e.g. Income Tax, BAS, Bookkeeping, Audit, FBT, Payroll) and sometimes what services are specifically excluded. Client responsibilities, ownership of documents, limitation of liability and confirmation of terms will all be outlined in writing. You may request a fixed price fee to be agreed upon and stated in the engagement letter. Some firms will also list the hourly charge out rate for staff who will work on the engagement.

Many clients feel helpless when their accounting fees keep rising. However, the client can actually have a significant influence on keeping the fee to a minimum. Accurate and timely data capture is key. The time to record, or in many cases, fix data entry can sometimes account for up to 80% of the accounting fee. Client education on what is required is critical to keep your fee to a minimum. If you mix personal and business transactions in one bank account, you can expect to pay your accountant extra for the privilege.

If the client is adept in completing such work papers, then the job arrives at the review and completion stage a lot sooner and at a lower cost. GB Walker & Associates

Medication Induced Weight Gain So many of us have a constant struggle with our weight. To think that medication can interfere with our best efforts is even more frustrating. A recent article in Retail Pharmacy magazine highlighted the problem and risks, but also the reality that even if weight gain is common with a drug, this might represent only a small percentage of people taking them, so for each individual there is a decent chance you might not be affected - it is a trial and error thing.

Domiciliary Care News At our Day Centre, Spring has allowed our clients and staff to enjoy the beautiful outdoors and the gorgeous spring garden, with a BBQ and activities in our outdoor area. We are looking forward to enjoying this for a few more Tuesday mornings before the summer heat kicks in. We would remind clients, who attend activities at our Day Centre, to please let our staff know if you are not able to attend on your normal Centre day. This allows our staff to invite other clients who may benefit from an additional day at our Centre. Our client Christmas Party is planned for Tuesday, the 9th December. Anyone who has received services from Jandowae Domiciliary Care throughout 2014 is warmly invited to attend this morning. We ask clients to RSVP before Tuesday, the 2nd, which is one week prior to this event. The Day Centre will be closing for the Christmas period from Monday, the 22nd December. The First Day for 2015 will be Tuesday, the 6th January. Our Transport Service continues to grow, with several trips to Dalby and Toowoomba most weeks, often with more than one client per trip. With this

in mind, we ask clients to book transport as early as possible to allow trips to be coordinated, to match up appointments as neatly as possible. This ensures clients waiting times, before and after appointments, is reduced where possible. If you would like Jandowae Domiciliary Care to book your appointment for you, to ensure we can also provide transport on that day, please feel free to contact Kylie-Anne on our new phone number 4668 4400.

Jenny has been very busy in the last few weeks contacting clients to explain some of the improvements that are occurring within Jandowae Domiciliary Care. These changes include coordinating the same staff to regularly visit clients where possible, to ensure better continuity of care for clients. Other improvements include an accounting system that will allow clients to pay for services received in person at our office, or at the time of receiving the service or by internet banking.

We would like to thank our clients for the consideration and understanding they have shown towards others, especially towards those clients who may be receiving treatments that are tiring or unpleasant. Please feel free to bring your own travel pillow for the trip to ensure your comfort on longer trips. If you have any questions or concerns regarding any changes to your planned care, please contact The next Social Support trip will be to Boondoomba our service on 4668 4400. This is not only because animal fats may have been replaced with hydrogenated fats (which increase levels of dangerous trans-fats in our food) but because low fat foods are likely to have increased amounts of sugar. Why? The answer has to do with taste. After removing the natural fats from their food, and replacing them with hydrogenated fats, manufacturers discovered a core problem. Their low fat food options were relatively tasteless. The easiest way to overcome this was to increase the sugar content in these foods.

Megan Douglas also affirms that such high levels of sugar should be avoided. To support this view, the World Health Organisation state that we should consume as little as 25 grams (six teaspoons) of sugar per day. With many sugars occurring naturally in our foods (and especially in the fruit we eat) highly refined and processed foods, packed with additional sugar, are something we might want to steer clear of.

So, next time you find yourself stuck in the centre aisles of your supermarket and that easy-to-cook, low fat meal option throws itself in front of you, take the time, at least, to read the ingredients’ label. Breast Cancer Survivors Laser Away Painful Memories Pink” Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. Ladies who have conquered cancer often would like a fresh start with a clean slate and we can help you do just that. Surviving breast cancer is one of the bravest and most challenging things a person can accomplish. Unfortunately, even for those who manage to beat the disease, many still come out bearing battle scars. Cancer patients who receive radiation treatment have a small blue or black tattoo on their skin to accurately aim the radiation on the treatment area. Many survivors, who have undergone radiation therapy, find this mark unsightly, a painful reminder of their traumatic experience. Or they may not like having visible ink on their body. Many women would like to remove this tattoo as a final step towards healing and full recovery.

“Many of us have a friend or loved one who has battled Breast Cancer,” said Dr Roos. “We would like to support these women by removing radiation marks that they no longer wish to see, and in doing so, help them to close this chapter of their lives. In most cases, we remove tattoos that people once liked but now no longer want. Breast cancer patients never wanted the tattoos to begin with, so we are happy to be a part of such a worthy cause.” Cosmetic Elegance Clinic is the biggest Laser Clinic west of Brisbane and all of their laser consultants have a laser safety licence and are registered with Queensland Health. You’ll be in good hands from the moment you step through their doors. To make a booking, phone 07 4638 2700.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Cosmetic Elegance Clinic Month and Dr Eddie Roos of Cosmetic Elegance Clinic is one of the physicians around the country who are doing their part to support breast cancer survivors. Question: Is it Safe to Sleep in Orthokeratology Contact Lenses? For many years now, optometrists have been prescribing contact lenses for overnight wear. While all forms of contact lens wear carry risks of eye infection, it was generally accepted that overnight wear would heighten the risk of such infections. However, recent research has found that while orthokeratology lens wearers are slightly more susceptible to infection than daily wear soft contact lens wearers, they are almost 3 times less likely to get an infection than patients who regularly sleep in their soft contact lenses.

Breast Screening Saves Lives, New Report Shows More Queenslanders are participating in breast cancer screening than the national average and mortality rates are dropping according to a new report released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare today. The BreastScreen Australia monitoring report 2011-2012 showed Queensland had the fourth-highest uptake rate of breast screening in the country, with 57 per cent of eligible women having a mammogram in 2011/12, compared to around 54 per cent nationally. The report also showed a decline in breast cancer mortality across Australia, attributed, in part, to the early detection of breast cancer through participation in BreastScreen programs nationally. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson, Katie Clift, said the trends were promising. “We’ve seen a significant drop in breast cancer mortality from 48 deaths per 100,000 women in 2007 to 44 deaths per 100,000 women in 2011,” Ms Clift said. “This report reinforces the fact that breast cancer screening works – and we need more eligible women to take up their free mammograms every year through BreastScreen Queensland.” “A Cancer Council Queensland study*, released earlier this year, showed women screened by BreastScreen Queensland have better survival than those not screened, even after adjusting for tumour stage. The findings showed the survival benefits of mammographic screening remained consistent across Queensland, regardless of where women lived.” “This is a testament to the success of the BreastScreen Queensland mobile vans that visit regional areas every year, a crucial initiative funded by the State Government.” “Women whose breast cancer is diagnosed through a breast screening program tend to have a better prognosis because they’re detected at an earlier, less-advanced stage.” Cancer Council Queensland recommends women aged 50-74 have a mammogram every two years through BreastScreen Queensland. “Queensland women should be breast aware and familiarise themselves with the normal look and feel of their breasts,” Ms Clift said. “All women should also see a doctor immediately if they notice any unusual breast changes.” Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Queensland women – around 2900 new cases are diagnosed each year and about 500 women die from the disease. Since BreastScreen Australia began in 1991, mortality has decreased from 68 deaths per 100,000 women to 44 deaths per 100,000 women in 2011. Notices Tai Chi for Health Classes Monday morning - Anglican Church Hall - 9 to 10 am - Cost $5. Standing or seated. Jandowae is most fortunate to have an excellent teacher such as Joan Seiler (Level 2 Instructor, Tai Chi for Arthritis). Benefits of practising Tai Chi include reduced risk of falls, improvement in muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness, improvement in posture and balance. And learning new moves is good for the brain! Tai Chi for Arthritis gently moves all the joints, muscles and tendons of the body and exercise such as this is recognised as an essential part of the management of arthritis. Many in Jandowae are now enjoying the benefits. Joan has made this program enjoyable, interesting and fun. No need to book; just turn up. You are most welcome. Tai Chi is for men and for women, young or older. A social chat and a cuppa after the lessons. (Please note, classes may be restricted during school holidays). Margaret Atkinson
