Michael Wood Electrical Golf Day ... On Saturday 9th August, Michael Wood Electrical hosted their third Three Person Ambrose, raising money for Leukaemia research. The day was very successful once again, and over $1700 was raised. Eighteen teams attended the day, including people who travelled from Toowoomba, Dalby, Chinchilla and Bell.
Raising Funds for Leukaemia
The highlights of the day included an eagle on the 5th by Patty Weldon, a win on the punt approach by Raymond (George) Wassell, an air swing on number 9 by Shane (Honky) Heinze, plenty of mulligans, a ‘spin off’ for first place and everyone leaving with a prize (or two). There are plenty of people to thank for such a successful event, starting with the people who donated prizes, which included Haymans Electrical and Communications, Dalby, CNW Chinchilla, Gj Gardener Homes Dalby, Stimson Plumbing Dalby, Evan Group, Clipsal, GC Event Hire, Daz Beads, Pam Wood and Hazel Bird. Another big thank you goes to Ally, Laura and Taryn for keeping everyone refreshed around the course, Audra, Kayleen and Celeste for providing afternoon tea for everyone, Darryl Donald for cooking up a storm at lunch time and the bar staff at the golf club.

A Note from the Team….. Even though it has been a bit damp and chilly recently, it is so great to see the Western Downs alive with wonderful events such as the Beef, Bells and Bottle Tree Festival which would be in full swing as we release your latest Jandowae Mill. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy what we have put together in this month’s magazine. You will find coverage of two golfing events that Jandowae has recently hosted, on pages 2 and 3, as well as photographs of Jandowae Fire Station’s 50 Years Celebration on page 5. The calendar opposite is packed with events in your community, and we encourage you to get out there, as the weather warms up, and be part of it. In this edition of the Jandowae Mill, you can get some spring home and garden inspiration courtesy of the businesses in our House, Garden and Home Improvement feature (p25-27). Ann Alcock, photojournalist, has also had the opportunity to visit some local Western Downs businesses, chatting to the friendly staff at EyeCare EyeWear (p32-33) and Lavender Patchwork (p12-13). It’s wonderful to see a diverse range of goods and services available in our region! If you would like to promote your business by commissioning a business profile, just get in contact with us; we would love to give you a hand. Finally, don’t forget about this month’s Empire Theatre competition for a chance to win a double pass to the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (p43). We also have a new theme for our photo competition starting in the October editions: Bush Blokes! Have a splendid September, and we will meet you here again next month for another edition of the Jandowae Mill!

Jandowae Fire Station – 50 Years
2
The Firies at Jandowae Fire and Emergency Service were proud to hold an Open Station and barbecue to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the current station. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Assistant Commissioner Tom Dawson and Area Commander Warren Buckley, along with past and present firefighters and their families, members of the local police, ambulance and SES services and past members of the Jandowae Fire Brigade Board attended the celebrations.
3
On Saturday 16th August, the Jandowae Fire Station was abuzz with activity as everyone gathered to celebrate and reminisce about the service and contributions that have been made, as well as view the changes to vehicles, equipment, technology and training over the years. It was fantastic to greet and yarn with all the retired firefighters who returned for the day. Although quite a number of past firefighters were unable to attend due to travel (some now live in WA and SA) or other commitments many sent their apologies. Whilst the Jandowae Fire and Emergency Service is now run by the Queensland Government, 50 years ago it was run by a board of community members who strived to establish the station for the local brigade which had been formed in 1946. V.B Sullivan MLA officially opened the current station on 1st February 1964. The board members at the time were: C.F. Robinson (Chairman), S.B. Newbery (Deputy Chairman), A.W. Hoskin, M.Y. Toshach, R.H. Haselwood, R.A.
Gould, H. Kennedy and N.R. Batley (Secretary). The fire brigade personnel serving in 1964 were: Eric R. Dann (Fire Chief), John (Jack) Greaves (Deputy Chief), John Wallace, Allan Norris, Kevin Creevey, John Lynch, Stanley Tindall, H. Rennick, Eric Nystrom and Alan Abbey. Although a little late with celebrations, the local firies believed that it was important to acknowledge and celebrate this milestone as it shows what locals in the Jandowae area were, and still are, capable of achieving. A wonderful day was had by all that attended and it was obvious that the comradery and friendship built over the years is still alive. Once a firefighter, always a FIREFIGHTER. Wayne Woollett

Jayco Owners Journey to Jandowae Each month, the Jayco Owners’ Club of southeast Queensland plans a rally to an area that is within 250 kilometres of Brisbane. While the management committee, on advice from our elected rally coordinator, plans the calendar for the year, each rally has an ordinary club member as the monthly host. In August, our destination was Jandowae Showgrounds and the rally hosts were Ross and Gail Beasley. In this role, Ross and Gail liaised with the Jandowae Office of the Western Downs Regional Council and the showground manager, Lillian Krog. The council representatives and Lillian were able to provide all the necessary information prior to the rally and Lillian and husband Ken were also available during our weekend visit to assist us when necessary. Other local contacts and information about the showground facilities were also provided, so that an enjoyable weekend could be planned in advance. I’m sure the local folk wondered what was happening when 24 Jayco vans began to arrive in town. While our rallies officially run from Friday to Sunday, many of our retired members are able to extend their weekend. This meant that the first vans began to arrive on Wednesday, August 6 and the last vans to leave left on Monday, August 11. Not all Club members returned home at the end of this rally, as there had been a tag-along tour organised to travel to Boondooma Homestead for the ‘Scots in The Bush Festival’. This is a typical monthly activity for our Jayco Owners’ Club and no doubt for many other caravan clubs in southeast Queensland. The reasons people join a caravan club are to get maximum use from their vans, visit a variety of interesting places
and to form friendships with like-minded people. Jandowae certainly provided an interesting venue for us and we found the local community very welcoming and friendly.

Jandowae Hosts Jayco Owners Club Jandowae welcomed members of the Jayco Owners Club to our town in early August. The Jayco members are a friendly group of people who took advantage of all that our town has to offer. It was a pleasure to see a large group of people enjoy our town and the many things we have available. Many were surprised at what is available for a township our size.

Information packages were available to all members upon their arrival at the Showground. The Jandowae office of the Western Downs Regional Council provided the packages, with other items such as a Business Directory and Timbertown brochure being added to the package by the Showground Management. Jayco Club members supported our Business Houses and contributed significantly to our economy. The¬ travellers, which visit Jandowae all through the year, boost our economy as well, thereby making our town look actively appealing to all who travel and stop for a rest. One of the highlights of the visit was Athlone Cottage and the hospitality of the Progress and Heritage Association committee; the morning tea was a great success. Careflight was a recipient of a donation by the Jayco Owners Club and the Jandowae Showground Management. Two dollars of each fifteen-dollar site fee over the four days was donated to this very worthy cause. Happy and Safe Travel to all.

Active Anglicans Confirmation candidate classes, of which we have several participants, are during and after each service at Jandowae on the first and third Sunday’s of the month. The new timetable for the Anglican parish (inc. Bell, Durong & Warra) is as follows: NEW, Evensong on 1st Sundays, of the month, 5pm at Jandowae. All Welcome. This timetable change is due to Father Fred’s other commitments. However, he does not wish us to miss out on a Eucharist service. The previously mentioned schedule has been put forward with some enthusiasm, so we are running with it for the moment. The service will offer an opportunity for those whose Sunday mornings are already busy with farming, family or sport. Go home, freshen up then come 8 - September 2014
to Evensong in the cooler times. Bring a plate to share, as we are hoping to have ‘pot luck’ suppers. Sandwiches, rolls, cakes, bakes … depending on the weather etc. We hope you will come along, enjoy the service, then the fellowship in the social atmosphere, enabling you to go home relaxed (without any washing up to do). Come along and give it a try. Remember, that this is on the 1st Sunday of each month. 3rd Sunday of the month: 9am Jandowae, Durong and 11.30am, Bell. For the moment, there is no regular service at Warra, although Christmas, Easter and special occasions by arrangement can be accommodated. Olivia Rose
In the life of the church we are now between the celebrations of the Ascension and Pentecost. We are reminded of Jesus saying “Go therefore, make disciples of all nations” St. Matthew 28 V 19 just prior to his Ascension. This is very relevant to us here in Jandowae. We are those who Jesus was speaking to when he said, “Go into the world”. All of us are the church; not just the priests to in effect we are joint missionaries to the gospel. Great things can be done for Christ and are indeed being done by you in this town. Of great importance is to keep up the worship even when a priest is not available and continue what the church does in the community to show God’s love for all. The wardens and church council want you to join with them in being the church of God in the community. Father Fred Ailwood, Retired Priest and Archdeacon

Landcare News BJFG Landcare is hosting the monthly workshop on property planning presented by Bruce Gardner. Thank you to Nicole Gammie, the Regional Landcare Facilitator, for putting together the following article. Condamine’s Property Planning Workshops Four highly successful property-planning workshops have been held at Millmerran, Jandowae, Quinalow and Warwick. These workshops are the first in a series to cover integrated property planning. This first workshop looked at the economic picture of Australian agriculture and how it relates to on farm outcomes. Australian agriculture has increased production 2.5 times since 1960, which is a great outcome as landholders are managing the driest continent on earth, although the downside to this is that real income is only 90% of what is was in 1960 and overall farm profit has fallen to 20% of 1960 levels.
small changes to the amount of product added to the market can lead to large price changes, which are not always beneficial to producers and the rural communities they live in. On the upside, there are numerous examples of landholders who have made changes to their farming system and are earning more by working smarter. An example is a beef producer who has cut breeder numbers from 300 to 120 and now produces 72 tonnes of beef compared to 55 tonnes originally. Another is a cropper who removed land, which did not have sufficient soil depth to support a cereal crop, and made more than $100,000 extra the following year. There are plenty more good news stories and suggestions to help local landholders.
Despite being the driest continent on earth, often as little as 10% of the rain that falls is converted in a saleable product. Changes at the farm level can increase this level without the need to purchase the neighbour. To continue the discussion and look for on farm solutions, The presenter, Bruce Gardiner, outlined that the second workshop will cover plant and animal

physiology, the role of different nutrients in plant and animal production and understanding weather and climate. If anyone is interested in hearing more, please contact Nicole Gammie on 0428 385 356 for further information. The next series of workshops will run the week of August 18th. Also, don’t forget that the BJFG annual general meeting is on the 11th of September at the Jandowae Library. Phil Labrie BJFG Project Coordinator, 0427 664 940

At the moment, you get to see what the group is up to and also if you like, have a say in the future of the town and its direction. Once this workshop is over, the benefits will be great. The third is exciting and will more tangible in the way of having workshops with guest speakers, on subjects applicable to Jandowae and the industries and circumstances revolving around Jandowae specific. The Jandowae Signage is coming to fruition, and the final layouts are just about to be sent to the printers, which is exciting, as it will give Jandowae Town a unique look and it’s own identity for what we are as a town in the WDRC.
August was a busy month for our group with a fabric dying class, our AGM a visit to Taralga and two craft days. Eleven members and four children had a fabulous time doing the dying class with Elizabeth Graetz. We dyed fabric, socks, t-shirts and silk scarves. The following week, we held our AGM. We thank Simone Dalgleish for stepping in on such short notice to be our guest speaker, as Maree Wylie could not attend due to illness. Simone chaired our meeting and then spoke about the services that the Domiciliary Care offer to our community. She also briefly explained Maree’s role as the McGrath Breast Care coordinator for this area. The president then thanked Simone for her very informative talk, and presented her with a small gift and a donation Photos: Top - Fabric painting design; Bottom - Ev Nauschutz, Floorie & Sheila at Taralga to Domiciliary Care. The next week, we visited Taralga for morning tea and craft this was a very enjoyable morning for all who attended. We also had a birthday cake for Florrie, who is one of our members. We then attended the luncheon at the Catholic Church. Last Friday, the ladies finished their Attic Window quilts. Our next project is the Kindy wall hanger.
This month sees the JBCG star an intense workshop with the Chamber of Commerce Industry of Queensland (CCIQ), being sponsored by QGC.

The Memorial Hall is going fantastic thanks to the WDRC jumping on-board and repairing the Hall before the painting starts. A big thank you to Ray Bateman for the work so far and wow doesn’t the decking out front and the new side aluminium doors look great. All’s going well and remember Jandowae is a “great place to be”. Also, on the Friday 31st of October, the JBCG is holding a Halloween Market in the Jandowae Central Park (next to Elders) from 4 - 8.30 pm. All funds raised by the JBCG will be donated to the Jandowae Scout Group. There will be market stalls, food, music and good fun, so dress the kids up in Halloween costumes and come along for some fun. See you all there! Rick Hogarth Business and Community Group President

Macalister QCWA Annual Meetings It was a pleasant afternoon when the Macalister QCWA Branch, combined with the Warra Branch, held their Annual Meetings recently in the Macalister Hall. The Macalister President, Mrs Valma Schelberg welcomed the Warra Branch members, also Mrs Maria Keys, the Maranoa Division President who chaired both meetings. The tide of time was at hand when the President Mrs Valma Schelberg presented the 54th Annual Report for 2014 of the QCWA Macalister Branch as follows: We are only a small group of seven members, an average of five members at the meetings. We have met some commitments, and attended most of the Division Executive meetings, and enjoyed them with much fellowship. The Finals Day of Maranoa Division was held during the year at the Macalister Hall. We provided the morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea, a pleasant day was enjoyed by all.

Jandowae Scouts Joeys and Cubs currently combine on Thursdays from 4.30pm-6.30pm with ‘Raksha’ & ‘Echidna’. Scouts on Tuesdays from 5.30-7.30pm combine with ‘Kittle’ and ‘Echidna’, with leaders from Kingaroy or Dalby on alternate weeks. We are most fortunate at present to be going through a strong development stage with input from surrounding groups and the newly re-organised Regional Structure. Activities Officer Maurice Vickery, under guidance from the Regional Commissioner Michael Brown, alongside regular input from Kingaroy leaders, have infused our Group with some much needed male influence and years of experienced Scouting leadership. This enables our own Section Leaders and Group Leader to benefit through improved timetables and ideas. This in turn offers improved structure and ideas to the hardworking Executive Committee. We hope parents, carers and friends take heart from the new enthusiasm to be found in the youth members. Come along and see what is happening. The achievement orientated hike at Prosto was a ‘survival’ experience, and much enjoyed by our inexperienced Scout group members who had a fantastic time and are now gearing up for the Bushcraft Survivial Skills Weekend in mid-Sepetember. The Cubs and Joeys will be attending SkillO-Rama in Toowoomba this coming weekend. There is also a camp with visitors here at Jandowae on the 19-21st Sept. Details to be announced. Youth members will now be able to attend these events in the new Camp Shirts; bright red with white flashes, poly-cotton mix with collars very smart. This saves using the parade/formal shirts during such events as camps and hikes. THANKYOU to our sponsors who are noted on each sleeve: PS&R Realty and Darr Creek Oasis. Very much appreciated. **If your business would like to sponsor Scout items and receive recognition for this, please contact the Group Leader & Committee. ** ALSO don’t forget about the current Pie Drive. A big thanks to all who have placed orders. The Youth Membership Promotion Evening with Regional Development Officer will most likely occur Thursday 18th September. This is open to all. Watch for notices on boards and via Newsletters home. We have also been invited to join with JBG once again for a stall during the anticipated street event at the end of October. Taralga Happenings Taralga continues to benefit from the support of the local community, as highlighted in last months edition of The Mill, where Lions reported on the donation of outdoor tables and chairs for use by the residents. These have been well received as some of our older outdoor settings were approaching their use by date. Seniors week occurred in August, and Taralga and the Domiciliary Service arranged reciprocal visits and entertainment. Residents and visitors were entertained at Taralga by the Harmoniques on the Tuesday. We are most appreciative of the continued support by this budding musical group who make regular visits during the year to entertain our residents. On Thursday of Seniors Week, several Taralga residents joined in celebrations at the Jandowae Domiciliary Centre. A good bond is being established between the two facilities with reciprocal visits becoming more common. Then on the Friday, the Jandowae Craft Club visited Taralga where their beautiful work was displayed and they were able to join in activities with our residents.
There has recently been a change in managerial staffing with the Director of Care role now being shared by Shirley Donohoe and Kay Blanch. Kay comes to us with several years experience managing a facility at Charleville. Welcome, Kay. Shirley has been the fulltime DOC at Taralga for nearly three years and is enjoying the support and relief of a shared role. Our Annual General Meeting will be held at Taralga on Tuesday 16th September at 7.30pm. Members of the public are welcome to attend and hear of the events and changes that are taking place. Refreshments will be served following the meeting. Until next month Geoff Sullivan, Facility Manager
Taralga has recently undertaken a Strategic Planning exercise with the assistance of Community Business Australia. This organisation specialises in planning for the future of aged care facilities. Aged care facilities are no longer listed as high or low care, and this will require some adjustments at Taralga as we compensate for the changing needs of our elderly citizens and changing government regulations. Taralga currently has two vacancies, and information can be obtained by prospective residents and their families from the Taralga office or by visiting the www.MyAgedCare. com.au website and following the prompts.

Neighbourhood Watch Meeting held 13th August 2014. Council to be advised that the trees lining our streets have outgrown the root protective surrounds and need attention. Also a request to Council to reinstate the “Boggy when wet” sign at Eva Street and to address lack of signage for directions into Eva Street. Ray Brook, Dalby advised that all residents should be aware of the need for security in their homes. Good locks on doors, security screens, alarm systems or camera are all available to deter crime. Another good deterrent is to keep in touch with neighbours and to all look out for each other, and a pet dog, large or small has deterred many a would-be thief. It is worth taking a note of strange cars or vehicles and their occupants in case needed for future reference if a crime has been committed. Safety at the checkout! People should ensure that they check their dockets at the checkout of any store. The latest scam discovered was that some checkout operators still did a “cash out” transaction, despite the customer saying they didn’t want it, usually for the amount of $20. Easily gone unnoticed with a large grocery order. The $20 was then passed to an accomplice, who came through as a customer. Thus CCTV would not reveal anything untoward. So the message is CHECK YOUR DOCKET every time you shop. Sergeant Mark Avent advised the meeting that 000 should be called if someone is observed swerving all over the road and likely to cause an accident. Residents are asked to keep their dogs restrained. Large dogs have been seen roaming the streets and attacking other dogs in and out of their yards. Non urgent Police matter can be referred to 13144 any time. When I arrive to interview Matt Stoner, or Chappy Matty as he is know to the students of Jandowae Prep10 State School, he is playing handball with a group of students during the afternoon tea break. This is all part of a day’s work for Matt, who made a decision in 2013 to change career paths and become a Chaplain so that he could spend more time helping children.
Jandowae will look like it stepped back in time come Saturday 18th October. Whether it be skin-tight pants, baggy “MC Hammer” pants, leg warmers, mini skirts, oversized shirts or electric neon colours, there will be a definite ‘80s feel in town.
Non-competitors are welcome to walk or run as many laps as they wish at their own pace. The obstacles are not compulsory for these people. There are also prizes for the best dressed individuals and teams in ‘80s theme. Everyone can run/walk to the beat of the ‘80s DJ Music, enjoy the costumes and colour and have a laugh as they battle their way through the obstacles! The second half of the event, starting at 5pm will be the Oktoberfest and Pig Races. There will be a number of international beers on offer to sample before Noah’s Racing Pigs enter the arena with a six race program.
Matt grew up in Dalby, and after studying Education at the University of Southern Queensland, he spent four years teaching in the middle years at the Chinchilla Christian School. He took up a position as School Chaplain in 2014, and spends Fridays in Chinchilla at the Christian School, and the rest of the week with the students at Jandowae Prep-10 State School. Matt spends class time with every year level during his four days in Jandowae, whether this is on the oval during Physical Education lessons, in the computer room or back in the classroom. He describes this as integral to his role as school Chaplain, allowing him to “build relationships with students, connecting with them so he can better understand their needs”. Matt’s goal is to be a positive role model, an approachable ‘ear’ for students at the schools he visits. Matt meets monthly with the Local Chaplaincy Committee, which includes representatives from each local church group and the school, and also attends combined church services. Matt has plans for programmes which he hopes will help students build teamwork skills - if members of the community are interested in volunteering time to assist with upcoming programmes, please contact Matt through the Jandowae school office. Planting Early..... Elements of Establishment
As a farmer its extremely satisfying to see a crop emerging strongly and evenly, placement within trench, seed soil contact and evenness of plant stand. it really gives your confidence a boost. Multiple checks are needed throughout the paddock, Don't plant soil that is too wet. Depending on soil type ensure there is 1 -1.5cm across varying soil types and around wheel tracks. Dragging chain behind planting units also helps to close In majority of situations the crop selection has been decided months prior to planting and paddocks have been fertilised to reach target yields. There are numerous factors influencing what crop to plant, they range from agronomic to economic, logistical to practical; and all of these considerations are influenced by your personal preference.
seed trench.
Main broadacre summer crop choices include corn, sunflower, sorghum, mungbean and cotton. At the time of writing this article the average soil temperature around Dalby was 12 degrees at 10am. From the above list of crops there are two that are more tolerant to cooler soils, they are corn and sunflower. Corn and sunflowers require the soil temperature to be at least 12 degrees (and rising )at 10am at planting depth. Whilst adequate sorghum, cotton and mungbeans emergence require soil temperature to be at least 16 degrees and increasing. Please note that some sorghum hybrids do have better cold tolerance than others. If you haven't got a soil thermometer, talk to your agronomist (or if your sneaky borrow the meat thermometer from the kitchen - but from experience, clean it before putting it back)
There are so many facets that need to be considered when establishing an early summer crop. Some people say they need a little luck. I say... be organised and you may create your own luck. Heres hoping for a happy planting and a happy harvest.
Don't apply to much down force to depth wheels,as it makes closing the seed trench more difficult. Use correct vacuum and fans speeds to ensure correct seed drop and prevent seed bounce. Don't just setup and go planting. Planting conditions are continually changing so check seed placement regularly.

Planting any summer crop into soils below optimum temperature slows emergence, reduces germination and establishment and increases susceptibility to diseases and soil insects. Planting seed that is treated with insecticide and fungicide will minimise relative establishment issues but not eliminate them. If establishment problems related to disease or insects have occurred in your paddock in the past contact your agronomist for more comprehensive management options. Before planting ensure you talk to your agronomist about best varieties suited for your paddocks and markets you are targeting. If planting seed left over from last year or your own mungbean seed, check seed viability. This can be achieved by sending a sample to registered lab, or can be done at home by sampling 100 seeds, placing between wet paper towels and positioning in a warm place. Count shot seeds on days 3, 7, 10 to evaluate germination speed and percentage. Sunflower and corn hybrid seed usually have good seedling vigour therefore should be planted 4-7cm deep, ensuring good seed soil contact. Sorghum, cotton and mungbean seed should be planted shallower, between 2.5 and 5cm. Newer varieties of Bollgard cotton (74BRF and 75BRF) should be planted no deeper than 3.5cm. Corn, sunflowers, sorghum and mungbeans can be planted deeper, especially to chase soil moisture, but be careful, the deeper you plant the colder the soil. It is impossible to discuss how to set up every type of planter in all conditions but there some critical principles to achieve a successful planting operation. Don't plant too fast!. Research has shown that planting faster than 10km/ hr (even with new double disc planters) has a detrimental effect on seed September 2014 - 23

It’s Warming Up and Time to Think About Sunscreen Again Did you know that 80% of skin ageing effects are due to sun exposure? If we care about how we look, it pays to do our best every day to avoid the damaging effect of the sun. After all, how many times have you not put sunscreen on in the morning, then found yourself doing some outdoor task longer than you anticipated, and becoming sunburned? Have you been lulled into a false sense of security on a cloudy day and been burned? Or how about the sunburn you get from light reflected off a swimming pool at a swimming carnival, even though you were in the shade? Ego is an Australian company that is a leader in the field of sunscreens. When SPF 50 sunscreens were allowed to be sold in Australia, they had the first SPF 50 products. We are often asked which sunscreens can be used on babies. Ego have a sensitive skin formulation that can be used from birth, Sunsense Sensitive. They also have a great new range for everyday use. There is the Sunsense Daily face, a combination moisturiser and SPF 50 sunscreen, one for over 50s, and slightly tinted formulations. The beauty of this range is that they contain AHA’s, (Alpha Hydroxy Acids), the same ingredient used by several of the more exclusive cosmetic brands in their moisturisers. There is also Vitamin B3, which helps lock in the skin’s natural moisture, and they protect against UVA and UVB rays which is important for protecting against the ageing effects of the sun.
Other options include a spray on sunscreen, which you can use even if your hands are dirty, and the junior range which is new out this year. It is important with sunscreens to understand the following concepts: A sunscreen will lengthen the time you can spend in the sun before you burn. If the day has a high UV index and you would normally burn in 5 minutes, then an SPF 50 can lengthen that time to 250 minutes or just over 4 hours. That should take care of most scenarios. If you are out longer than that, you could still get sunburned. Of course, someone with more olive skin who would take 10 minutes to burn without sunscreen might be able to last all day, but the sunscreen would still need to be reapplied after 4 hours in case it was worn off or washed off by sweat or water. Sunscreen needs to be applied at least 15 minutes before you go out into the sun so that it can absorb into the skin and start to work. Remember that the UV index is highest between 10am and 2pm. If you can arrange your outdoor activities outside these hours in the summer time, that can help a lot. You can check the UV index on the Bureau of Meteorology website.
Meals on Wheels
We had to decide between the sport and the regular ranges as we only have so much space, but decided upon the sports range as it is water resistant for up to 4 hours, and we figure it is hot enough out here that if people aren’t swimming, they will be doing sweaty work. You can get a family sized pack, regular size or even a roll-on, which is great for kids to apply themselves.

Some people are so afraid of being sunburned, that they stay indoors too much and don’t get enough sunlight to manufacture their vitamin D requirements. A recent study on the Sunshine Coast showed that people were far better off getting their vitamin D from the sun, even if they are wearing sunscreen, than from a supplement. Eight to fifteen minutes on the face and limbs at least three days a week can go a long way to achieving that.

Be Mindful and Meditate Lately I have been doing a lot of educating around mindfulness and meditation in my workshops so I thought it only right to pass some of this information onto you. A lot of stigma is raised around mindfulness and meditation; some say it’s hocus pocus. When, in fact, it is one of the oldest arts still practiced in today’s society. Practicing mindfulness is making time in your day (5-10min) to pay attention solely to the present moment and not thinking about the past or future. It is accepting your thoughts, feelings and sensations as they are in that very moment. Why We Need It: •

•
We tend to live our thoughts in the past or future and lose awareness of the here and now. Our thoughts in the past and present can keep us locked in suffering or absent from full living. Our thoughts are not reality, they are not good or bad; they are just passing events, like the weather. We can observe our thoughts without judgement, attachment or avoidance, through being in the moment and returning to the moment again and again.

Question: My boss has asked me to get prescription safety glasses. How are they different from my normal glasses? In addition to offering clear vision, prescription safety glasses provide front and side impact protection. They are manufactured by specialty optical laboratories who implement quality management systems. This ensures that they provide glasses that are certified to standards dictated by SAI Global (AS/NZS 1337.6:2007). One of the requirements for this standard (ISO9000) is that one in every ten pairs is sampled for durability. Prescription safety glasses are specially engraved and issued with documentation relating to their compliance with the standards. They can be worn as the eyewear component of the personal protective equipment required in many work environments. Some are even non-conductive and thus suitable for electricians. They are also the preferred eyewear for some sportspeople and farm workers.

Prescription safety glasses are available in all lens designs, including progressives, bifocals, photochromic (change colour when outdoors) and polarised. To ensure optimal protection, it is important that the frame selected is well fitting. This is why, in my opinion, it is important that you find a provider who is experienced with dispensing these products and has a large range from which to choose. Laser – the Future in Fresh & Healthy Skin Light has been around since creation. Light from the sun causes damage to the skin and prematurely ages our skin. Ironically, light treatment can also be used to rejuvenate the skin and reverse the effects of sun-damage. Laser treatments are relatively quick, with little downtime and fast healing. In fact, it is this healing that the laser therapy relies on. In a recent Cosmetic Magazine article, Dr Roos was quoted, “Fraxel fractional laser penetrates the upper layers of the skin and causes a degree of thermal damage which triggers the body’s healing response and stimulates the production of new collagen at the treatment site. This results in smoothing, plumping and rejuvenating the skin.” Laser tattoo removal has reached new heights too. The PicoSure uses the latest acoustic wave technology to shatter ink into small particles which the body absorbs. Not only is this laser safer to use and less painful than previous lasers, the wavelength of the laser makes it more effective in removing difficult ink colours such as blues and greens.

Happiness at Work Pays Off It’s no surprise that most of us would prefer to be part of a happy workplace, rather than an unhappy one. Our team value of “enjoyment” is one of the things I love most about being part of the BMO team. But did you know that a happy workplace is also a more productive one?
FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE. We often spend too many resources managing our worst performers. An effective management tool is to reinforce the best qualities of the best people. It doesn’t mean you ignore those who are underperforming - but rather adopt a strength-based approach.
This means shifting away from the “self-esteem” movement where “everyone got a ribbon”. Instead, we need to encourage our team members not to be afraid to fail. As Alfred Lord Tennyson said, “It’s better to have tried and failed than to live life wondering what would’ve happened if I had tried”.
So how do you create a happy workplace? Here’s a few courtesy tips I picked up at a recent seminar with guest speaker “Dr Happy” (Tim Sharp) from the Happiness Institute.
PRACTISE GRATITUDE. Appreciate what you have. When you are faced with a stressful event, put it in perspective. For example, if your computer program shuts down, stop and think about how many people in the world will die today because they are hungry. About 22,000. All of a sudden having to restart your computer doesn’t seem quite so dire.
CELEBRATE. Shine the light on what’s right. Celebrate. It doesn’t cost you anything to say ‘thank you’, and it could actually improve your business’ bottom line.
BE OPTIMISTIC. Optimists make better leaders. Set BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) but keep your eye on the reality of the day. Optimism is about looking forward. The best optimists also know how to aim high without ignoring day-to-day RESILIENCE. Dr Happy says resilience is one of the most important traits to encourage and develop. issues.
Try sprinkling a little more happy dust around your workplaces. Start with a smile and ‘thank you’. You might be surprised by the results!

Bell Veterinary Services Spring is nearly here. It’s bull sale time again… Does your herd have a good conception rate? Are any of your bulls overcoming illness (three day sickness) or injury (e.g. fighting) in the last few months? Have your current herd bulls been tested recently?
There are multiple aspects to bull fertility. Highly fertile bulls are sound of limb and hoof, of good general health with no history of recent illness and have a high level of motile spermatozoa on crush side semen analysis. So, not only do they have to be fertile in the common sense of the word, but they also have to be able to deliver their fertility to female cattle.
Can your bulls cope with the forthcoming joining season? Do you need to look at testing your current bull power in case you need to buy replacement bulls? Don’t wait until it’s too late; contact us now. Bell Veterinary Services

“Credit Suisse has recently tipped Xero, founded by serial entreprenuer Rod Drury, as the “Apple of Accounting” that has taken on established giants like Intuit, Sage, Myob and Reckon. The Sydney Morning Herald in November 2013 reported Xero shares to have surged by 425 percent in just a year with it being tipped to grow to a $10bn Nasdaq stock within five years, which is almost three times its present growth.
How did Xero do this? By a simple solution that others had not thought of offering - a low priced subscription accounting software using cloud computing that allowed accountants to utilise cost effective products that met all their needs” Charter Magazine March 2014

Business
Business Brokerage Caveat Emptor is a legal term with the meaning of “let the buyer beware”. But it can equally apply to a seller or prospective seller of a small business. Often a business brokerage brand will cold call a seller or bombard them with marketing material fishing for a listing. As a seller of a small business, you need to be aware that if these brokers are asking for a significant amount of money upfront (often $10,000 or more) then they are selling advertising and have no vested interest in your business actually being sold. Typically, they will put an impressive advertising campaign in place for a fraction of the cost they charge you. A giveaway, that you may be in the process of being groomed as a target, will be that they tell you what you want to hear in connection with the sale or list price. This is often unfounded and not a realistic expectation. There are several methods of valuation which may be applied to a small business. The most appropriate method will depend on the industry you are in and the nature of your business. The most common is the “future maintainable earnings method”. This is where a net profit figure is derived after adjusting for a market salary of the owners if they work in the business and other add back items such as depreciation and extra-ordinary income or expenses. Then, a multiple of the earnings will be applied to arrive at a valuation or a valuation range. Quite simply, the driving force behind a valuation will be the adjusted net profit. If the business is profitable and a buyer can be confident of a return after employing someone to manage or run the business, then a premium will be paid. Surplus assets will also be taken into consideration. The goodwill of a business is intangible and difficult to measure. Types of goodwill to consider when providing a valuation of a business are: locational goodwill, goodwill specific to the owner’s expertise or intellectual knowledge and general goodwill of the business generated from trading history and customer base. Grant Walker is a licenced business broker and has been a member of the Sell-A-Business team for over 3 years. As a Chartered Accountant, Grant also has extensive business valuations experience and has attended many seminars in connection with this very specialized area. GB Walker & Associates

What our Customers are Saying. Is your accountant proactive in keeping your fee to a minimum? “Grant took the novel approach of educating me so I could assist in putting part of the year end file and working paper back up together. The result was a 50% reduction in our annual accounting fee” Wayne Naumann - Courier and Landscaping Business Owner Does your accountant give personalized service and maximize your refund entitlement? “Attempts to do my own tax resulted in me owing the tax office money. Grant was able to identify a number of areas where my claim could be improved including a motor vehicle logbook which reduced my taxable income below the HELP debt repayment threshold. I came out with a refund of over $2,000! Grant also provided 5 star service meeting me at home around my hectic schedule at a highly competitive price” Sarah Batt - Veterinarian “Grant provided personalized service and met us in the comfort of our own home. This proved to be very convenient when it was discovered that I was missing records. I simply went to the filing cabinet and pulled them out. Grant was very thorough in his work and identified prior year errors (not claiming GST paid expenses) and refunds we were entitled to which our previous tax agents had missed resulting in a windfall tax refund for us” David & Delora Jones - Business start up owners of Training Calandar
