A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to Winter! Jessica Foreman graces our cover this month, dressed by ‘Kiss N’ Makeup’ Boutique in Chinchilla. You can read all about the boutique on the opposite page. Your regional magazine is rapidly expanding since our first combined edition in April. We have seen an increase in the amount of community submitted editiorial and therefore need to cap the amount of words submitted in our editorial to enable us to include as many contributors as possible. If you could keep your editorial to 300 words or under, that would be fantastic. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the magazines, the community feedback is amazing; the Western Downs community are really enjoying being kept up to date on all the regional events!
Jessica Flynn,
Editor

Kiss N' Makeup Boutique A visual feast awaits visitors entering the striking and beautifully styled salon and boutique at Kiss N’ Makeup. Owner and qualified Beauty Therapist, Angela Gordon has an eye for colour and detail, and has successfully brought together beauty treatments, clothing and make-up under one roof. The gorgeous range of clothing, shoes and accessories includes brands such as Elliatt, Mossman and Holiday with styles to suit most ages. June will signal the arrival of winter and in stock you will find special occasion outfits, casual clothing and the all important layering pieces. The salon offers all beauty treatments including facials, manicures and pedicures and uses the all-natural skin care range, La Cellulaire. Angela says that clients are pleased to find that the popular make-up brand, Napoleon, is available for purchase through the salon. Body Sugaring Australia for Hair Removal Both men and women who want a natural, fast and virtually pain-free method of hair removal should consider Body Sugaring Australia. Founder, Kathryn Patterson, says that it
removes the full root system and dements the hair follicle so that the hair grows back finer and the root system becomes weaker, making regrowth between treatments less obvious. “Many clients are looking for natural and ecofriendly products,” says Angela. “The process used by Body Sugaring Australia is gentle, safe for most skin types and will leave you with lovely smooth skin. It is also good for eczema because it works on dead skin cells.” Body Sugaring Australia Training for Salon Owners As a Master Trainer for Body Sugaring Australia and currently a Queensland Distributor, Angela travels state wide providing full salon support for those wishing to undertake training in using this increasingly popular process. DECORATING TO SELL So you want to turn over your property. Let’s look at the facts. Fashion in colour goes in cycles. 1991 to 2002, our base colour was cream. 2002 - 2013 was Latte/Coffee, and now we are at the start of the next trend. I have said it before, ‘Grey is the new base colour and it will be around for the next 10 years’. The next fact is 70% of people are attracted by cooler colours and only 30% will like the warmer tones, so you warm people are really going to have to “cool it”. White and fresh and bright is the fashion, but there are a hundred different whites out there. Choose something that warms your heart and if you are really smart, pick a white that has black and umber (brown) in the tint. Trims should be done in an enamel high gloss and you can either go a stunning white, a deeper shade of the white you have chosen or for a real impact, try high gloss black and that is a real statement with great impact. Once you have decided your paint, now is the time to add colour and your theme. A theme may be a colour (e.g. aqua blue); a texture (e.g. soft and silky); or a pattern (e.g. Fluer De Lis). My last project had Fluer De Lis as the theme and we were able to pick it up in a beautiful Black Carpet, Silver Grey Velvet Valance with a silver sheer underneath heavily trimmed in bullion and on the lounge covers. Pure opulence for a 110 year old homestead. Just keep it simple and continue the same throughout the house and you can’t go wrong. Creative Interiors

Managing employees in a family business In a family business, what are reasonable guidelines for employing and managing your employees? Managing people in Australia's ever changing and complicated legal environment continues to challenge large and small business alike. In order to minimise exposure to litigation, it is imperative that businesses implement a compliant HR system.
EnVision Partners have seen first-hand the result of a non-compliant HR system, whereby a small business with one employee was out of pocket by thousands of dollars. Are you aware that there are cloud-based solutions designed to ease this considerable burden? These solutions can empower businesses (in both retail and agribusiness), helping them meet the challenges of delivering day-to-day HR and WHS management, both efficiently and cost effectively. Some of these solutions may also offer: ü 24x7 access and protection ü simplified day-to-day HR tasks ü best practice tools and management ü assistance with hiring, management and termination An excellent HR administration system is vital for business success. It ensures consistency and control, saving businesses time, while increasing compliance and protection, which could save your business thousands of dollars.
Problems or weaknesses within your existing HR system are just some of the many areas EnVision Partners can help you to identify, with our Business Needs Analysis service. To assist businesses, EnVision Partners are offering a complimentary Business Needs Analysis through until the end of June, 2015. Alternatively, should you wish to focus on your HR obligations, you can request a HR Accountability Health Check. The new framework for the Significant Investor Visa (SIV) was announced last Friday by the Federal Government (15 May 2015) after a period of suspension of the SIV scheme. From 1 July 2015, SIV applicants must invest a minimum of $5 million over a four year period into eligible and complying investments.
From 1 July, the new framework will require the $5 million over the four years to be invested into differing schemes. Capital investment of $2 million into emerging companies will be required and of the remaining $3 million only ten percent of this amount can be invested into the residential property market. The announcement also provided additional information and clarification around the introduction of the new Premium Investor Visa (PIV).
The PIV will assist in providing a ‘fast-track’ to permanent residency for applicants who meet certain criteria and requirements and are able to invest at least $15 million into eligible investments.

TAX PLANNING FOR WAGE EARNERS Budgeting and tax planning might sound like something just for businesses, but getting advice before 30 June is important for individuals too, especially if you’re earning higher wages. One option to consider is salary packaging. If you are an employee, you would typically receive a regular salary paid directly to a bank account. Sometimes, it can be beneficial to forgo part of our cash salary and receive payment in the form of some other type of benefit instead. In this situation, you make an agreement with your employer to receive part of your payment for work in the form of a ‘non-cash benefit’. This is called salary packaging. One of the main benefits of salary packaging is that it may allow you to reduce the amount of tax you have to pay. This allows you to receive a greater overall benefit from your employment, as the amount you save in tax, you receive in non-cash benefits. In theory, it’s possible to

GRANDMA’S TUTUS HELP A SICK MUM These little tutus are for sale to help raise money to enable three little children to spend time with their Mum while she is recovering in Sydney from a dual transplant.
The money we are raising will help with the cost of the children spending a few weeks in Sydney visiting their Mum and Dad.

MODERN WEANING STRATEGIES – HOW MUCH HAS CHANGED? Good cattlemen know the benefits of looking after young stock. Calves that are well grown and properly weaned show excellent health and vigour. In that respect, not much has changed in the last 100 years. Good cattlemen still have good cattle. Research gives the benefit of confirming that we are doing the right thing. Research can remove doubt by proving or debunking cattle management techniques. So what has science proven, that good cattlemen already know? Feed the cow for a healthy weaner: Cow milk yield is chief determinant of weaner weight. Good milk production not only requires energy and balanced protein, but supplemental vitamins and minerals are absolutely essential. Concentrate on udder health: There is renewed interest in mastitis reducing beef cow milk yield. Studies prove that nutritional supplementation reduces mastitis. That’s one reason why well fed cows have healthier calves. Yard or Paddock Weaning: Beef CRC studies show that yard weaned cattle out-perform paddock weaned; mainly due to a reduction in stress. By supplying a familiar supplement in the yard, performance is also boosted. Health is important: intestinal and respiratory diseases challenge the immune system and reduce performance. Follow recommended vaccine strategies and ensure excellent nutrition for boosted immune status. Graziers have been using Anipro liquid supplement as a principle weaning tool for 20 years. WeatherPro, a weather protected mineral lick, is successful at improving weaning weights on already high quality pastures. Anipro and WeatherPro provide all the trace-nutrients essential for cow health and milk production, and are safe for young stock at weaning. These supplements consistently provide a 3:1 return on investment for a weaning program. Add in the other benefits of improved fertility, heavier weaning weights and less-tail on the weaner mob and
BEEF EXPO SUCCESS Aaron Randall from ‘Bushy Park’, The Gums, made the journey to Rockhampton for the triennial Beef Expo. The Expo was attended by close to 90,000 people, including more than 1000 international visitors from 55 different countries. The 17 year old, trainee livestock buyer, attended the Expo with two entries. Granite Gold Jessie won Junior Champion Gelbvieh while Norolle Lady in Red and her calf came third in their class. Aaron was pleased with his results as he said the competition was tough with some quality cattle being shown. He said the week was a fantastic chance to meet other breeders from across the country and overseas. It was a good week for client contact and potential business. After his successful trip, Aaron is now concentrating on preparing his cattle for the Ekka in August. Western Downs Magazine

FLEABANE CONTROL – TIMING IS CRITICAL Early May has seen us with very timely rainfalls across the district for winter crop planting. As it was one of the best falls for autumn, we would also expect to see a good flush of weeds in fallow ground. One in particular is our old arch nemesis Fleabane (Flaxleaf Fleabane - Conyza bonariensis). To achieve effective weed control, timing of herbicide spraying is critical. Weed size and growth stage, soil moisture status and environmental conditions at application are all important factors contributing to effective weed control, especially Fleabane. Current conditions are perfect for Fleabane germination, with temperatures between 20-25oC and moisture available at the surface. Applying robust herbicide rates to young fleabane at rosette stage, (< 10cm diameter) preferably less than one month old, has demonstrated greater than 90% control. So what are some common options? * Pre-emergent/ residuals - Atrazine, Diuron and Balance are still working well when applied prior to a significant rain event. As explained in our previous article, products with residual activity will restrict your cropping options so have a plan and be aware of plant back periods. Tordon Fallow Boss is also proving to be very effective. This is commonly used in conjunction with glyphosate (and a third tank partner if needed) for general fallow knockdown spraying. Fallow Boss contains Picloram and Aminopyralid which provide good residual. At top rate, plant back to sorghum is 4 months.
* Knockdown - Glyphosate and 2,4-D mixes are still proving very effective when targeting fleabane plants of small rosette size. To improve the efficacy of the job, we recommend using high water rates (e.g. 80 L/ha) and a good quality adjuvant/penetrant such as Liberate @ 250-500ml/100L water.
effective to achieve the best outcome. There are a multitude of options for fleabane control but what I have mentioned are some of the more common and cost effective options. I have not mentioned any rates of products as they can and will vary for each situation; however, robust rates are essential for Fleabane and many other hard to kill weeds. Herbicide resistance is a real threat to our industry and quite often the most expensive spray is the one which doesn’t work.
* Double Knock - The most consistently effective treatment. This is a follow up application typically using Paraquat 7-10 days after the initial knockdown treatment. The success of the double knock depends heavily on the level of control from the first knock. Trials have shown David Guest that the first knock needs to be at least 60% Landmark Agronomist

We got out the Collaborative Floor Journal, formed a circle and threw around some great ideas. The children planned the menu, the decorations and the songs. We sent home invitations and on Monday, 11th May, the Kids’ Café came alive. Thank you to the Mums for playing along and thank you for joining in with the Hokey Pokey and Rock-a-Bye Your Bear.
We’d like to extend a warm welcome to all our new families who have recently joined us. Our Mother’s Day pampering afternoon was a joyous occasion for all our children, mothers and grandmothers. Together, we discussed and planned for the event that celebrated our Mums. The children beautified their mums, painting their nails, applying make-up, styling their hair and beading necklaces. The children performed two dances - Dr Knickerbocker and Jump Jump Star. Thank you, Mums, for coming along and making this afternoon so memorable!
Excursions within our community are now high on the agenda and Group A is looking forward to visiting our Jandowae Hospital this month. We are also in communication with the Bell Vet Services and hope to pop on by their new Jandowae location very soon!

HANNAFORD SCHOOL NEWS
CHINCHILLA STATE HIGH SCHOOL
Hannaford State School celebrated 100 years of ANZAC DAY by attending the annual ANZAC DAY march at Meandarra this year. Every child from our school participated, wore their uniform with pride and laid a wreath. We also had some special Vietnam Veteran visitors come to our school from Melbourne to talk to the children about their life during war time.
This year, fifty of Chinchilla State High School’s most talented students performed in the school musical. Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST was a great success and culminated in three fantastic performances on the 8th and 9th May.
Once or twice a term our school has an inter-school visit from The Gums State School. Last term it was Hannaford’s turn to visit The Gums. The children mingled with each other as they made Easter bonnets, iced Easter cooking and made Easter cards. Our school motto includes ‘make learning a life experience’. By having regular inter-school visits we hope to further develop social, emotional and communication skills. Education Queensland’s vision for all QLD schools is to enable students to contribute to their community when they are an adult, in a positive way. Effective communication skills are vital for all students. See you at the 75th Hannaford Gymkhana Saturday June 27. Ros Bougoure Principal

THE TREATMENT OF ACNE NEEDS A HOLISTIC APPROACH
Most people experience acne, in varying degrees, at some point in their life. There are a number of factors that contribute to the development of acne, the most common are genetic, hormonal, environmental and dietary factors. Not all acne is the same and not all skin is the same, so there is no one treatment that will work for everyone.
our skin is something we all have to work at, but through constant care and good habits over the long term, beautiful clear skin can be more than just a dream. There are three components to clearing acne:

therapies are often used to treat acne and acne scarring. Light therapy targets the bacteria that cause acne inflammation whilst also improving skin texture and lessening the appearance of acne scarring. Similarly, laser treatment works by damaging the sebaceous glands, lessening the amount of oil they produce. Certain cosmetic procedures, including chemical peels and microdermabrasion, are considered effective acne management when used in combination with other treatments. To get the best out of your treatment, you will need to commit to the program recommended by your Skin Care Consultant, and realise that its success will be based on a good partnership between both of you. Please also understand that treatment of this condition can change over the course of time, but will most likely be an ongoing process which needs to become a way of life for you. Acne typically affects areas of skin where there is an over-production of sebum (oil). Pustules and papules develop as a result of blockages in follicles caused by sebum and dead skin cells. This is often compounded by bacterium, which leads to inflammation and can result in scarring.
Moderate to severe acne is sometimes treated with antibiotic medication in order to reduce bacteria and to fight infection. Ask OptomTom Your questions answered by the experts at Eyecare Eyewear
How do I clean my glasses? The most appropriate method of cleaning your glasses depends on how dirty they are. If your lenses are lightly smudged from fingerprints or contact with your eyelashes, a gentle rub with a microfibre cloth that is usually provided with your glasses case will often be all that is required. Glasses spray solutions or single use disposable towelettes are also useful for lens smudges. However, if your glasses are lightly soiled, I recommend the use of warm, none oily, soapy water and a non-abrasive cloth. This is followed by a towel dry and a final polish with a microfibre cloth. It is not recommended to
use hot water or chemical cleaning agents as these can damage the lens coatings and other plastic components of the glasses. For heavily soiled glasses, with build up between the lenses and the frame or around the nose pads, we would usually dismantle the glasses and use the ultrasonic cleaner. All of our practices are equipped with ultrasonic cleaning machines that use high frequency sound waves to agitate the water and scrub the dirt off the glasses. We are also able to replace components of glasses such as nose pads and temple tips.

Vince’s Views On The Vine MOTHER’S DAY CLASSIC OK, we will see what has happened since last month. You just have to be honest and say that Yes! Chinchilla is a Vital Friendly Town and District and let’s hope we can keep it that way. Of all the events that Chinchilla organises, we must say that most are very successful and this is because these events don’t just happen, people have to organise and run them without any payment or reward. This is just exceptional. In the last ‘Western Downs Magazine’, there were many articles, photos and news of what is happening in Chinchilla and across the area in general, and it was just unreal to see and of course, including The 100th Anzac Day Celebrations as the main news. It is also very important that Clubs such as Apex, Lions and Rotary, plus other important groups, all make Chinchilla the place to be and we hope that we can keep it that way too. The three Service Clubs - Apex, Lions and Rotary have their Changeover Nights coming up. Peter Etheridge will be the new Rotary President and the current President, David Jackson, has recently mentioned that his year in the “Chair” has gone very quickly. Of course, time flies when you are having fun!! Chinchilla Show is coming up and over the past few years, many improvements have been made by the Show Society. I hope you all make it to the Show this year to support them for their 103rd Show. What a great achievement, well done! Good luck to all competitors and exhibitors too. It’s good to hear that the ‘round about’ in Heeney Street is getting a facelift. I hope all the mothers in the area enjoyed their special day, “Mother’s Day”! A Joke: This lady, living alone, got sick of this so she put an advertisement in the paper. She said that she wanted a man who would treat her nicely, who would not run away and who was good in bed. The doorbell rings and there was this fellow in a wheel chair who had no arms or legs. “I am here about the advertisement in the paper and as you can see, I have no arms so I can’t beat you and no legs so I can’t run away,” he said. “Yes,” the lady said, “but are you good in bed?” “How do you think that I rang the doorbell?”

SENIORS CELEBRATE 20 YEARS National Seniors Dalby Branch celebrated its 20th Anniversary in March.
Foundation and early members of National Seniors Dalby Branch.
Foundation President, Pat Troe, was invited as Guest Speaker for the celebration meeting and luncheon. Mr Troe saw an ad in the “Dalby Herald for a meeting calling for expressions of interest to form a branch of National Seniors on February 22, 1995. The first General Meeting was held on March 22 where Pat Troe was elected President; a position he held for the next five years. The remainder of the Committee was: Vice President - June Crump, Secretary - John Winterflood and Treasurer - Ivy Winterflood. June Crump went on to become President of Zone 109. It was decided to hold meetings on the second Wednesday of the month; the day meetings are still held. Two weeks after forming the Branch, members attended the Zone Conference in Roma. Committee Meetings were held on the first Tuesday of the month, originally at the home of Pat and Jackie Troe in Bunya Street. They were later moved to Ningana where Committee Meetings are still held, although the day has changed. That first year was busy for the new branch as it held a concert at the rotunda in Thomas Jack Park called ‘Sunday in the Park’ and some members also attended the State Conference in Brisbane. The Branch hosted a Zone Meeting in November and joined with Kingaroy Branch for a Christmas Party in the Bunyas in December. The first bus trip was to Miles Museum and Possum Park. Now 20 years later, the Branch is still going strong, holding its monthly meetings at the Windsor Hotel. Morning tea is available from 10am with the meeting starting at 10.30am. Nancy Evans

Nepal Earthquake Assistance I must start this month’s article with a sincere apology. Due to my misunderstanding, I reported last month that Lions had constructed the chook pen at Anderson Home. In fact, the construction of the chook pen was done by Max and Shirley Brummell, son-in-law Michael, and the extended family. They toiled over a full weekend to build the structure for the Anderson Home residents who now enjoy tending their flock and collecting the eggs. My deepest apologies are extended to the Brummell family for my misunderstanding and subsequent misreporting about their hard work and philanthropic activities for the Anderson Home residents. How fabulous it is that there are others in our community prepared to give so much for others. Thanks to the Brummell family for their efforts at Anderson Home. What I can be sure of reporting is that Lions were off the mark immediately the news of the Nepal earthquake broke. Past International President of Lions, Barry Palmer, advises that Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) immediately granted a US$100,000 Major Catastrophe Grant for relief and reconstruction efforts. This is a frightening reminder that disasters occur frequently and without warning. Please consider making a donation so the Lions of Nepal can continue their service to those most in need – and as I advise so often – Lions take no administration costs from your donations. ALL money raised finds its way to the local Lions Club for distribution to the needy. Catch up for a chat each Saturday morning at our Sausage Sizzle in front of the Harvey Norman store in Patrick Street.
J & E WALTON TAILORS & MERCERS One of the oldest tailoring establishments on the Downs in 1912 was that of J and E Walton, situated on the western side of Cunningham Street. Prior to this, the business had been on the eastern side in premises where Mr W. Hoffman established his business in 1902. The ‘J’ stood for James Joseph and the ‘E’ stood for Edward John, both sons of the widely known and respected Edward Walton, an Irishman by birth. Edward looked after the business whilst James was the travelling salesman for the firm. They were two of a family of nine and we have been unable to establish if any other family members were involved in the business except their late father who had established the business. Mr W. S. Short, who had been employed by one of the leading tailoring businesses in Sydney, had joined the staff of thirteen as the firm’s cutter in 1912. Mr Short was an artist at his trade and the firm claimed him to be the best cutter on the Downs. He showed particular adaptability in making ladies’ coats and skirts and the orders on that side of the business substantially increased during 1912, much to the satisfaction of James and Edward, but this seems to have been short lived because, by 1915, they were both living and working in Toowoomba.

Edward had been in the tailoring business for thirty years before his death in June, 1911, so the business started around 1881. The fame which followed the ‘Walton suits’ meant that long after leaving the district, clients would return to have their suits made by the master tailor. His excellent workmanship, attention to detail and the faithfulness with which he executed his orders, had orders flowing in from all the surrounding stations and towns as well as from Dalby town. There was another tailor When their father, Edward Walton, arrived in in town during this period who may have even Queensland in 1876, the first sod of the Dalby been working for Edward. to Roma railway line had been turned, so Dalby would have been in the news; whether this Edward and Margaret lived in Patrick Street enticed him to Dalby it is not known, but an Irish with their family and Margaret remained there lass, also made her way to Dalby after arriving until her demise in August, 1944. Both were in Queensland. They were both employed by buried in the Dalby Monumental Cemetery The Landy Bros, a general merchant in Drayton along with other family members. Dalby Couple Celebrates 60th Wedding Anniversary
Maureen and Thomas Borthistle celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on 19 May. Congratulations!
Maureen Mirow married Thomas Borthistle at the first night time Nuptial Mass celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Gunnedah, NSW on May 19, 1955. Maureen was a legal secretary for Manning, Riddle & Co. at Martin Place, Sydney. Tom had recently left the Air Force where he had studied Aeronautical Engineering and worked at Woomera Rocket Range. Tom secured a position working at Bendix Technico at Kogarah, Sydney, and the young couple planned to continue their careers, but medical issues intervened and Tom was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on the honeymoon. Later, their first child, a daughter, almost died at 3 weeks of age and was left with a rare blood disorder and subsequently, 26 years of intermittent hospital stays. Maureen became a full time home maker and carer. During the ensuing years, they moved from Sydney to Tamworth then to Brisbane for nine years. Tom worked for Pilar Naco at Hendra. Three more children had arrived - two boys and another girl. Again, illness intervened; this time with Maureen having severe asthma. A country change was ordered. Moving to Dalby in 1969, Maureen began to regain her health. Tom started work with Napier Brothers in Dalby and worked there several years before going to Gyral Implements and later Mitze Engineering, after Gyral moved its operations to Toowoomba. Before retirement at 65, Tom worked at Karingal Nursing Home in Dalby and for a very rewarding 5 years as a wardsman. 46
This year, Tom will receive his 60 year Kellion Victory Medal from Diabetes Australia. Maureen has been a constant source of love, wisdom and understanding for her family and friends. She enjoys the TV, trying to read newspapers from cover to cover and gardening. During their 60 years of marriage, Maureen and Tom have coped with illness, a house fire and several flood events. Their recipe for a happy and successful marriage is a strong faith, love, mutual respect and a good sense of humour. Maureen and Tom love Dalby and the many kind people they have met over the years. Tom says Dalby is a wonderful place to raise a family. Maureen and Tom have five grandchildren and one great grandchild. On this special occasion, we all wish them God’s continued blessings for many years to come. Gary and Ronlyn Jacobson

Dalby Relay for Life Have you ever wondered what it would be like to hear your doctor say “You have cancer”? An estimated 128,000 Australians will hear those words this year and will be confronted with the physical and mental battles that follow. What would it mean to you and your family? How would your life change? Hopefully, you are not one of the two Australian men or one of the three Australian women who will suffer with this disease by the time they are 85. Sobering thoughts aren’t they? You can help change these statistics by becoming a part of the Dalby Relay For Life and join the national fight back against cancer. Over the last 20 years more than 61 00 lives have been saved as a result of funds raised by relays across the nation. Dalby has contributed nearly half a million dollars in its 8 years of involvement. Our goal this year is once again $60 000, but wouldn’t it be nice if we could reach $77 000 and break the half million barrier! But the Relay is about more than the money – even though our theme this year is Goldrush. The Relay is about people, people you know, people you see around town. It is about people joining together to Remember, Celebrate and Fight Back. The Relay unites people of all ages and from all walks of life in a truly rewarding experience. David Condon, well known Jimbour farmer, has agreed to be The Face of Relay for 2015. His personal battle with cancer has overcome his reluctance to be in the limelight as he understands the value of what the Relay provides and accomplishes and has therefore agreed to be our ambassador.
Already there are nine teams working towards this year’s event even though the official launch is not until June 20 at Dalby Shopping World. BMO’s team, Good as Gold, raised $1 800 at their biennial garage sale – a reflection of the staff’s hard work and enthusiasm and the community’s generosity.. Plans for Paint the Town Purple are also on the drawing board. After such an enthusiastic and fun response in 2014, the local Cancer Council branch is hoping that businesses and even members of the wider community will embrace the theme and “go purple” for the week July 13-18. So join a team, form a team or be a team. Last year Ann Doherty and Michelle Nicholson were each recognized for having walked the entire 18 hours for the fifth year in a row. What an outstanding commitment! However, you don’t have to be as tough as that to help. Fifteen people in a team can divide the effort and reduce the blisters and aches and pains. You can even register a non-walking team or simply make a donation. But please become a part of this experience and help raise funds that contribute to research, patient support and education. Help save lives. Registration which includes a relay shirt and breakfast costs $20 for adults and $15 for young people. Log on to www.relayforlife.org.au and register your team. Find us on Facebook or drop into our launch. Together we will beat cancer! Barb Handley
Dalby Meals on Wheels News The recent Open Day and Make and Bake stall was quite successful with a number of enquiries from possible clients and volunteers. The stall raised over $1000. There are a couple of ways people can help out in June. If you dine out at Mary’s Commercial Hotel and spend over $20 you will be given a peg to put in a Rotary bin for your choice of charity. Rotary will then divide the prize pool amongst the charities at the end of June.
The second way you can help out in June is to come along to bingo at the Dalby Leagues Club at 10am on Sundays, with proceeds going to Meals on Wheels.

What a way to start the month of May! Rain filling our dams and our creeks. Because of the very wet day on the 1st May, our meeting was postponed until the 5th June, at 9-30. Some of our ladies are making a cathedral window pincushion while others are doing a cushion. During April, several ladies visited Taralga for the morning, joining the residents for morning tea, some craft and lots of chatter. We will be making another visit during May. We meet on the first and third Fridays of each month at the Uniting Church Hall 9-30am until 2-00pm. Every one welcome!
Well I think we are back on the train, after our derailment with the hall, so it's all steam ahead and getting on with making "Jandowae a Better Place".

JINGHI VALLEY QCWA NEWS The Universe has provided, for some of this area, good falls of rain which has filled tanks and topped up the dams. How good is that for this time of the year. Our members are all excited that the rain has eased the pressure for many of the farmers in need of this rain. Via the grapevine have been told the Town Dam flowed over the road, now the wild life is going to multiply. Top news. Our members who went, joined in, or helped the Local RSL in any way, all enjoyed the Anzac Celebrations. Our Branch gave a donation this year to the Residents of the Taralga Nursing Home for more crafts supplies as the folks there are very active on their craft days. A wreath was laid in Remembrance of our Fallen soldiers. Thank you to our local lad Tommy Chesterton for your help in laying of the QCWA Wreath. You did an excellent job and your passion for the Spirit of Anzac shone thru for us as well as you helped me out. I find it’s a long way to the ground these days. Our last meeting was well attended so we were able to discuss what we have on our books to do, as in catering. A few of our Members are still battling with health issues so we do wish them a speedy recovery. If there’s anything we can do
please let us know so we can help out. The Kindy Quiz night was a blast and the CWA team did an excellent job. How about this for an original name. CWA became the ‘Cooks with Attitude’ which caught the judges fancy and we got a prize. That came about seeing we had 2 men playing sometimes act as B.B.Que cooks for some of the larger catering jobs. A fun evening for all the players. Well done to the Kindy mob and the local Ambulance Committee you should give yourselves a pat on the back. Great teams in costumes looked exciting and added lots of colour and fun to the evening. For our next meeting we shared the evening with friends who came along as our guests to celebrate Mothers Day. We had the most enjoyable evening much like a “Girls Night Out” The food was delicious starting with hot Pumpkin soup that My Kitchen Rules Judges would give between 8 - 10. Our Sally is the top soup cook. Then came about 7 different hot pot meals, vegs., and some savoury’s, then the deserts were just darn delicious Then yummy, the famous bread and butter pudding, sticky absolutely delicious. That will do me. Oh I did date pudding with caramel sauce, apple slice get my Mothers Day hugs in abundance at the and so many others. I asked our invited Guests if meeting. loved it. they enjoyed their meal, response was delicious Hazel Bird, Jinghi Valley QCWA Member

JANDOWAE JAMIN’
JANDOWAE UNITING CHURCH NEWS
Hey, Hey, My, My, Rock and Roll will never die
Our Annual Bazaar was held on 2nd May. Again, we were thwarted by the weather with heavy rain falling the day before. Some people were unable to attend because of flooding but even though it was a little sodden underfoot, there was a good roll up and all who attended were able to go home with many bargains.
(Neil Young).
What another artist packed afternoon! 18 in total; the guest numbers were down, but I tell you what, everyone enjoyed the musical talent we have in and out of this area. We are continually having new talent roll up and strut their stuff, which is great, and at the same time, the regulars turn up and create an afternoon of music. ‘Thank you’ to all who travel the distance to entertain us once a month.
‘Thank you’ to the many people who helped with cooking, craft items, plants, face painting and the Dalby Uniting Church members who cooked the breakfast and sold their “bagged garden fertilizer”.
And let me tell you also, that a lot of the talent is maturing into dam fine artists as well, and with more confidence, I reckon they will start charging the “Jamin Session” to play there.
National Day of Thanksgiving will be celebrated by our church on Sunday, 31st May, at the Ecumenical Service which will be held in the Uniting Church at the special time of 8.00am. We look forward to meeting up with Sister Mary again at this service.
We had about 55 guests listening to the talent and me! as well - sorry about that!
‘Get Together’ is on again on Friday, 12th June from 9.00am. Everyone welcome!
But all was good and the artists were moving fast to get through the “muso’s”. As usual, we were late to finish but it just happens and I don’t think anybody worries about it, as it is all fun.
Jandowae Uniting Church holds a service every Sunday morning at 8.30am.
Les and Oakey were fantastic with their tech gear and making sure everybody was plugged in and ready to go. Just on the subject of gear - to let you know with the monies we receive at the door, we have now purchased five light weight tables, hot water urn, some cleaning gear, music stands and “mic” stands, tea/ coffee/ cups/ sugar/ milk each session. These all go to making the afternoon run more smoothly and at relatively no cost to the “Jamin’ Session”, so give yourselves a pat on the back for contributing to the cause. Let me thank all who turned up on ANZAC Day and played for the masses; it added to the ANZAC services and the spirit of getting together. Also, sorry if the Hall was messy but that comes with the Hall being painted, but what a ‘beauty’ it will be when finished. See ya all next time, second Sunday of the month, every month at the Jandowae Memorial Hall. Rick Hogarth

SKINNIER AND LIGHTER IN 2 WEEKS I knew we needed to offer a weight loss management solution in our pharmacy, so at a recent conference, I had a chance to investigate a few. The Medical Vita Diet won out because of price, taste, flexibility, transition to regular eating and its proven track record over almost 30 years. I am not someone who wistfully looks back on their teenage years as something to aspire to. I have always struggled with my weight. I start over every day with good intentions, but it is a struggle between energy levels, time constraints and cravings. I was 64kg when I came to Jandowae. I usually lose a few kilos when I am on holidays, but haven’t been below 70kg for several years. I still have a lot of clothes I love that will fit me if I can reach my goal of 64kg. When I came back to work on 4th May, I began the program. I had already been a bit naughty having a fast food breakfast that morning and a V drink to get me through the drive here, but by replacing lunch and dinner with shakes that day, I got back on track. I was horrified to find I was 78kg that morning, even heavier than usual. I seemed to lose 1.4kg in the first two days, and my waist was slimmer, which was encouraging, but I was continually hungry. I was told to have plenty of veges prepared to snack on, but it was a very sudden drop in portion size to adjust to. I flipped things around and made a cooked breakfast which lasted me into the afternoon, then had a shake for lunch and discovered the chicken soup for dinner, which is thicker and a bit more filling. By the end of the week, I doubted that I would see any big changes, as I had broken out on a couple of occasions, (usually by increasing the protein allowance or by having an extra snack bar cut into little pieces) but after one week, I was 2.8kg lighter and had lost an inch off my hips and two inches off my waist. An exercise program alongside it would have been good, but running around the shop would have to suffice. If the time is right for you to do something about your weight, come into Jandowae Pharmacy to get started. We can put you on a program with By week two, I was over the initial hunger and hugely encouraged as well. regular weekly tracking to keep you accountable, provide you with tips The convenience means that I am sticking to the program easily and I and tricks and help you to transition to a maintenance diet once you feel good. MILES SHOW 2015 The light was fading fast as the 2015 Miles show got under way on Saturday the 16th May. Barrel races were first on the agenda and competitors displayed some excellent riding skills. These were followed by the ‘Grand Entry’, with Tim Drury singing the national anthem and local personality Pat Staines as the MC and for the evening. This was followed by the bull riding sections. The mood was distinctly bush flavoured; with plenty of loud country music, jeans, boots, big hats, horses and bulls. The latter were almost docile looking until ridden! The riders ranged from pint sized to experienced hands, some of whom had travelled long distances for the chance to get ‘thrown from a bull’. There is no accounting for taste! Tuesday the 19th dawned fine and Miles dressed for the occasion and turned out in force to enjoy what was on offer. The pavilion held the usual displays of flowers, food, craft, paintings and photos – plenty to see for everyone. There was a tantalizing range of food and drink available and a variety of entertainment throughout the day to suit a range of tastes. Shearing displays, lumberjacks, puppet shows (popular with young and old alike), performances by local musical talent and a fashion parade (arranged by ‘spirited style’) – just to mention a few. The usual fairground rides were up and running for the young and the ‘young at heart’. After dark, an excellent display of fireworks marked the end of yet another successful miles show. Penny Eamer

SWEETAPPLE TIME CAPSULE AT 49 MURILLA ST, MILES When an old planter box that was unsuccessful in its purpose needed removal 4 years ago something had to fill the space. Sally had had a mosaic lesson from Kylie Bourne and after some years of practice decided she was prepared to try some for the empty space. The number 49 was an obvious choice, then some small tiles to tell the story of what had happened on the premises. Finding out about the history Sally was directed to Merlene Coates Freeman as she had actually run a gift shop there at one time. Merlene did some research and passed the information on. After a fire in the 1930s there had been an open space and boxing tents were often set up in these spaces. Then there was an open air theatre, followed by an ANZ bank being built in the early 1960s. After that it became Ken Murray’s jewellery and watchmaker’s shop and then Merlene’s music and gift shop which Delma Saltau later took over. David and Sally purchased the building from Peter Vowles who ran his Real Estate business there. It was these pieces of information that inspired 6 tiles and after that a space has been left for any later businesses who have occupied the building to leave a plaque if they wish. It has been rented by Soiltech and now MAS accommodation. There remained a space between the number 49 and the
tiles and the idea of a time capsule was born. To fit the space a special capsule was commissioned and then it sat for 4 years in the Sweetapple lounge room! Once Sally had time she started the process of collecting items from businesses and entities within Miles. This was to show a snapshot of how Miles is today -with what became 110 business and entities ( including voluntary organisations) contributing. There are more but contacting , collecting and reminding became very time consuming and not everyone wished to submit and entry. A few small items accompanied the flyers , business cards and some written business histories. Unfortunately there was never going to be space to try and include farmers and other businesses within the Miles surrounds. After Sally read some information about William Miles the capsule was placed within the boundary of 49 Murilla St.by John Hoffmann President of the Miles Chamber of Commerce on May 5th 2015 and will be opened in 27 years to coincide with 225 years since the birth of William Miles-whose birthdate will now be recorded for all to see along the main street in Miles.

QUIET LION THAILAND TRIP
Operation North Morganite 2015
Miles State High School
Between the 09th day of May 2015 and the 17th day of May 2015 Miles police with support from the State Traffic Road Police Unit, the Random Drug testing unit, Queensland Transport and surrounding stations conducted a major traffic Operation - North Morganite. As a result of the operation police conducted a total of 4929 Roadside Breath Test, over 170 roadside drug tests and issued a total of 481 traffic infringement notices with 117 being issued to drivers of heavy vehicles for fatigue and other offences.
Students began their 10 day odyssey to explore the Burma Thailand Railway – referred to as the ‘Death Railway’ due to the number of deaths of prisoners of war and forced labourers whilst constructing it. Over 200,000 local labourers died (Malays, Thai, Burmese) as well as over 10,000 POW’s, including approximately 2900 Australians.
Police also arrested and charged a total of 30 persons on 58 charges ranging from drugs possession, heavy vehicle ’critical and severe risk’ fatigue offences, unlicensed drivers, weapon offences and wanted suspect offenders.
Students visited numerous sites of importance over the course of the trip, including large camps that held over 5000 POW’s such as Hintok River camp. In the beautiful and peaceful countryside that it now is, it was hard to imagine just how bad the conditions were.
Roadside breath and drug testing was conducted which resulted 17 persons being found positive for driving while affected by drugs and 6 persons found to be driving while affected by alcohol.
Students got to visit beautiful locations such as Sai Yok Falls – a rest and recreation area for the Japanese guards and officers during the lines construction. The prisoners were, unfortunately, not able to access these areas.
Operation North Morganite was coordinated by officers of the Miles Police Station who conducted research into traffic crashes, traffic offences and traffic flows to conduct an intelligence based large scale traffic operation. The high profile nature of this operation will undoubtedly contributed to safer roads in Miles and surrounding districts including Dalby, Roma and Goondiwindi. Miles police will continue to perform traffic related enforcement in and around the Miles area and urge driver to drive safely and remember the fatal five - Distraction and Inattention, Drink/Drug Driving Fatigue, Seat Belts and Speeding. Miles Police
have students participating in these trips, the people who made these sacrifices will never be forgotten. ‘Lest we Forget’. Miles State High School
After arriving, following an 8 hour flight, students had the opportunity to visit the summer palace located just outside Bangkok. The grounds were beautiful, though the students were nervous around the guards, for good reasons.
Students and staff (Julie Orton – MSHS teacher pictured) also got to meet, feed and touch elephants at Thadan Elephant Park and Reserve. As kids from the bush, this was a huge highlight for the students. Students got a small taste of the conditions when walking Hellfire Pass – 40 degrees and 90% humidity made the walk almost unbearable. The prospect of sick and injured men, working day and night in those conditions, humbled them all. Hellfire Pass, seen above, was 18 metres high and 8-10 metres wide, hewn from the extremely hard volcanic rock. However, the highlight of the tour was the students getting to meet and talk to former POW, Neil MacPherson OAM, about his experiences during and after the war. A sprightly 93, Neil shared his wisdom and his experiences with the students and even at the end of an 18 hour day on Anzac Day, was willing to tell jokes. Here is Hellfire Pass on Anzac morning – 1500 people in the Pass, with 2000 more above, not able to get in. The trip was the ‘trip of a life time’ for many of MSHS students – some having never been on a plane. The motto shown on the gates of the Jeath Museum, Kanchanaburi, fittingly sums up the tour ‘Forgive but never Forget’. While we 57

1. This year’s Wandoan Show ticked all the boxesit remembered the ANZAC’s in the centenary year, it celebrated their Showgirls and Rural Ambassador entrants in style, it recognised Angus cattle in a feature show, and it provided entertainment to cater for the whole family. The festivities kicked off with the Miss Showgirl ‘under the stars’ show ball. The committee were pleased to announce they sold out of tickets, with just over 100 people in attendance. Mkarla James was judged as this year’s Miss Wandoan Showgirl, while Jae Ryan was awarded the Rural Ambassador title. Both ladies will now progress to a regional level in June. Cattle numbers were up in both the stud and prime
sections, helped no doubt by the Angus feature show and the lead up to the national event, Beef Australia 2015. Horse numbers were also reported to be strong across most sections. The Mudgeeraba Troop 14th Light Horse Regimen Inc. was a family favourite, with the horseman displaying their skills and mateship throughout the two show days. Other popular attractions for the children included Viv’s Animal Farm, Luke’s Reptile Kingdom, Noah’s Racing Pigs and side show alley which offered half priced tickets thanks to Glencore’s sponsorship.

A WEEKEND OF WONDERS AT MOONIE The Moonie Visual Arts Group held a weekend workshop in April with Toowoomba’s Bev McClune, who showed her unflappable tutorial style in tutoring several different patterns simultaneously over the weekend, at the Moonie Sports Club. Bev taught “Metro Rings” (a variety of a double wedding ring pattern), and “Chic and Checkered” from the quick curve ruler book. Actually, reading and understanding a pattern is a skill many members were rusty on (to say the least) as we usually rely on asking questions from a tutor. So much to learn and a great way to keep our brains stretched and active. Several brave women also learned how to do a shadow Trapunto pattern involving multiple layers of fabric, some translucent and free arm machine quilting techniques. The results were spectacular for beginners! New skills are always good to learn. Lynelle Urquhart

TOONGABBIE BLOOMS BEAUTIFULLY Thank you, Andrew and Melinda White, for hosting our April Garden Day at your lovely, large country garden at “Toongabbie”, Moonie. The green lawn and big trees were spectacular. Healthy plants and flowering shrubs showed the benefits of your extensive use of mulch. Over 40 people attended, plus a number of children as it was school holiday time. It was nice to see them playing happily together, enjoying the sunshine and pleasant surroundings. In the early days of Hannaford Rose and Geranium Club, children were banned. I believe we have Mim Hirst and Marlene Green to thank for overturning this harsh rule. The Single Bloom Competition was won by Clare Baker (‘Amarco’, Moonie) with her magnificent red double hibiscus. It was good to see a number of Moonie ladies there on the day. Our next Garden Day is at “Bramston” 13546 Surat Development Road, The Gums, the home of Sue Schloss on 12th May. Yvonne’s Pots will be there with plants for sale. Other stall-holders are welcome to attend. The day commences at 9.30 am. Please remember to bring your chair, lunch, mug, multi-draw items and/or plant cuttings to swap or give away. It has been good to see that most members remember to wear their badges. The following meeting will be at Greg & Sue Apelt’s garden, Surat Development Road, Tara, on the 9th June. You don’t have to be a member to come to a meeting. All are very welcome. See you there. Marion Simmonds Hannaford Rose & Geranium Garden Club President

TARA CATHOLIC FETE The Annual Catholic Fete and Auction was held on Saturday, 2nd May. The morning was wet, with light rain falling and the Committee made the brave decision to go ahead and take on the elements. The gamble paid off. The rain stopped, and even though it was overcast and wet underfoot, the Fete was a great success. The ever popular Auction was well supported by vendors and buyers alike and the large bidding crowd was kept amused by the auctioneers and their anecdotes.

A VISUAL FEAST FOR HUNDREDS! The Moonie Sports Club was hardly recognisable after a willing team of volunteers transformed it into an elegant Art Exhibition from the 15 until the 17th May. Hundreds of visitors, from many places, made the trip to tiny Moonie to feast their eyes and open their wallets to the benefit of all. The event was a fundraiser for the Moonie P & C Association, Moonie Pool and the Moonie Sports Club. Fantastic food (seemingly a Moonie speciality if the guest’s compliments are to be believed) accompanied leisurely walks about the venue to view the visual art on display, which was a major exhibition for local artist, Heather Sullivan, as well as several other Moonie artists and members of the Toowoomba Art Society. The Moonie Visual Arts Group provided a treasure trove of intricately patterned quilts, embroidery, and more, some of which were for sale. The depth of talent in this area is nothing less than spectacular. (Yes, I am impressed, as were the visitors.) The event was supported by sponsorship from the Western Downs Regional Council and Santos, which was very gratefully received, ensuring that the three charities benefited more. RACQ Careflight Rescue also benefitted with a gold coin entry fee on Saturday and Sunday. Their cute little helicopter box is stuffed! We sincerely appreciate their assistance in Moonie when needed for medical evacuations. The oldest guests travelled from Chinchilla for the day out, and Myrtle and Athol Greaves really enjoyed their day. Myrtle is a sprightly 95 and Athol told me his 100th birthday is in a couple of months. It was great to share the day with them and all the other visitors. ‘Thanks’ to all the people who toiled long hours to make this event such a resounding success. Lynelle Urquhart

ANZAC DAY 2015 SERVICE AT MOONIE SCHOOL Many community members, parents, grandparents and school staff met at the Memorial stone in the front of Moonie State School to remember the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign this ANZAC Day. The students ran the service, with the Year 3 to 6 cohort reciting “The Last ANZAC” poem. Mr Philip Egan, a Vietnam veteran and officer, whose farm (“Traighli”) is across the Moonie Highway from the school, told those present of his personal journey in the service of Australia. Most students heard this with some surprise, to think ‘just a local man’ they know had been so involved in a conflict that they were commemorating. Mr Egan was also wearing the medals of his father and of his wife Margaret’s father, who both served in WW2. One of the students, Olivia Burke (“Glen Erin”, Moonie), also wore her grandfather’s medals. It was very good to remember that these people and acts, which can seem so far removed from our normal lives at present, can and do have a direct impact on how we live now in Australia.
