‘The Road’
They were given gloves and sent forth to collect roadside garbage. They did. They then carried it back and arranged it reverently all around the edges of the floor! It was not some time honoured traditional ritual, but it was a necessary step in setting up ‘The Road’ and ‘they’ were the (long suffering?) partners of artists on a mission. They had a message to impart. The individual’s normal preference for painting styles seemed totally irrelevant after entering the gallery and it was like arriving in a completely new space, leaving viewers in no doubt whatsoever of the intended message! Shock was so well simulated in the works, that judging by the reactions to the exhibition, it certainly seemed to have ‘hit a nerve’ with many, if not all of those present. All six artists are to be commended for their attempt to impart their message; they certainly achieved their aims! It was, without doubt the longest painting I have ever seen in a gallery. A continuous black background effectively set off the fully saturated primary and secondary colours depicting the issues and objects on and around the Warrego Highway. Dominated by a broken white line, the painting meanders around four of the six walls of the gallery, each section painted by one of the six artists and matched so well it was hard to tell where one stopped and the other started. ‘Six Artists Out Of Nowhere’ was formed about thirteen years ago and the ‘The Road’ is their 21st exhibition. The members are Sandra Allen, Anne Cameron, Elizabeth Corfe, Barbara Hancock and Helen and Wally Pert. At first they exhibited random works and later started working to a theme. As they progressed, they have become more and more inclined towards delivering strong, thought provoking statements and ‘The Road’ is no exception! Dongas, accidents, city drivers, litter, accommodation, congestion, speed, roadwork delays, noise, potholes and a myriad of other things were covered. It sounds all too familiar. Whatever happened to foals in green paddocks, spring flowers, quiet country homes and a layback, sane country life style – am I missing something here? Excuse the intended pun but this exhibition could be classed as a ‘smash hit’ and is showing at the Dogwood Centre until April the 8th - don’t miss it. To quote the well known song (and not excluding Wally!) ‘The sisters are doing it for themselves….’. Keep it up ladies! Lindsay Williams Shield The lives of four young men taken too early from the Wandoan community were remembered and celebrated on 8th March at the annual rugby league Lindsay Williams Shield. The men who pulled on jerseys for the Taroom Wandoan Battlers team honoured the memory of their four mates who should have been standing beside them. Bevan Watson was the first who tragically lost his life in a motorbike accident in 2007. Last January Chris Hall was in a fatal accident on the Leichardt Highway, and exactly six months later, goodbyes were said for mates Jacko Sattler and Russell Poole. All four Wandoan Wildcat rugby league boys would have turned 22 or 23 this year. A set of commemorative jerseys were auctioned off by Brad Hall, Wandoan, to a large crowd after the final game at the Lindsay Williams Oval in Wandoan. The highest priced jersey, purchased by Shannon Sattler, smashed expectations after it sold for $3300. Together the 13 jerseys sponsored by Mike Jones Earthmoving and JK Backhoe Hire, raised $11,045 for the Wandoan Sport and Rec Association. A Note From The Editor Babies, babies everywhere! Especially in our office at the moment; Amelia, who has been designing the Jandowae Mill and Miles Lily for us, is now on maternity leave for a year. We wish her the best of luck and we will miss her happy face in the office. On a positive note though, Amy is back! Seems she couldn’t stay away from us and has joined us as a freelancer, taking on the Dalby Harvest and the Tara & District Magazine. I will be on maternity leave myself from next month, but as there is no rest for the wicked, I will be back for the July Editions. In the Jessica Flynn, Editor meantime Kate, Karel and Amy will be holding the fort here at the office. We have a colourful Wandoan Show Feature in this month’s edition, and you can read all about this on pages 7 to 10. Thank you to the wonderful local businesses who supported this feature and allowed the Show to be advertised in such detail. Details of the Taroom Show can also be found on page 13, so be sure to head along and support these local events! The social calendar is full with races and a rodeo also upcoming, and a swag of other local events. We look forward to bringing you a wrap up of these in coming months. A local art exhibition, sporting events and a charity dinner with an Irish twist were all well attended, and you will find these covered in the first six pages of this colourful issue of the Miles Lily. The Jandowae Timbertown Festival is also fast approaching; you can read about the plans for this award winning event on page 16 of this edition, and keep an eye out in next month’s edition for the full program and details of the Festival. Easter is almost upon us and we head into school holiday craziness again! So, until next month enjoy reading your Miles Lily, and I hope you will manage to catch up with family over the Easter break..

St Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance Over 300 people filled the Wandoan Cultural Centre on 14th March for the inaugural Saint Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance, hosted by the Wandoan Health Auxiliary. The fundraiser was in aid of the Wandoan Primary Health Centre and Arthritis Queensland, both of which provide an outstanding service to community members. Wandoan Health Auxiliary president Cecilia Donohoe said the proceeds would be put towards improving the health facility, with several items on the wish list. “We’d like to eventually purchase some furniture for outside, and improve the waiting area,” Mrs Donohoe said.

Memorabilia and other items donated by local businesses allowed the auxiliary group to operate a silent and live auction. The Irish Embassy also donated books on the history of the Irish in Australia. “The auction was very well patronised,” Mrs Donohoe said. “Both the live and silent auctions were very profitable, raising a combined amount of just over $8,000. Ten percent of this money will be donated to Arthritis Queensland. “I’d like to personally thank all the sponsors, donors and the community for attending,” Mrs Donohoe said. “Without their help this event certainly wouldn’t have been the success it was. It’s a credit to the community, especially when we are in the middle of such a drought.” Story and Photography by Andrea Schulz Photos: 1. Some of the highlights for the 2014 show, marked on the calendar for 5th and 6th May, are the Lumberjack Show which is proudly sponsored by Australia Pacific LNG. The sky is the limit really.” The winner of this new section will take home $100 prize money, while the viewer’s choice entry will receive $50. Visitors to the pavilion are also in with a chance to win a lucky door prize.
The Adams family, from Dangarfield Cattle Company, Taroom, will again sponsor the fireworks, and this show will mark 26 years of their support to this section. Also sponsoring the spectacular night time entertainment is Sunwater, the Leichardt Hotel Motel, and Adam and Benita Hay, ABH Transport, Wandoan. With this in mind, it is important that we, as a community, support both the physical and mental health of not only men, but also the women and children within our communities.
On Easter Saturday, April 19, 2014, a Privately organized Public Fundraiser for RACQ CareFlight will be held at Monogorilby Hall – a “Camp Oven Comedy” evening with a country focus. Gardening Tips For April This is a good time of year to start preparing for winter and spring flowers, bulbs and vegetables. Hyacinth, ranunculus, daffodil and jonquil bulbs can all be planted in April. To get them growing as quickly as possible, feed them with a specialised fertiliser such as Yates Bulb Food at planting time to give them an extra boost. April is also a good time to sow foxglove, delphinium, cornflower and calendula seeds. Pansies, violas and lobelias can be planted now as well and look beautiful in hanging baskets to add a burst of colour. Vegetables to plant this month include: broad beans, snow peas, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, onions, parsnip and spinach. To avoid fruit fly, don’t forget to hang a fruit fly trap nearby to your vegetable garden and citrus trees. Also, to prevent brown rot fungus, remove all mummified fruit from stone fruit trees and spray with Bordeaux mixture at leaf fall. As water supplies are diminishing due to the severe drought that we are experiencing, it is important to take the appropriate steps to ensure your garden is able to retain as much moisture as possible. Always keep your gardens well mulched with a good quality mulch such as Sugarcane, Tea Tree, Lucerne or Cypress Mulch; not only will this assist with water retention but it will also prevent weeds from growing. Eco-hydrate and Penetraide can also be watered on to help with deep water penetration. For more gardening tips and advice, be sure to visit the team at Dalby Landscape & Home Garden Supplies. Qantas to Start Direct Flights Between Brisbane and Miles
Silver Memories Programme Benefits Carinya Hostel Residents
Travelling between Brisbane and Miles will become easier next month with the start of direct return flights between the two centres.
Music and lyrics - a powerful combination that captures special moments and provides enjoyment for all ages - songs that reduce us to tears or move us to get up and dance create memories that last a lifetime. None of this should be lost as we move through our Twilight years.
Qantas announced on Friday that it would be operating nine return flights between Brisbane and Miles each week – double daily flights on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and one on Thursday. The new service is a first for Miles, which will support surrounding regions, as well as the growing LNG industry. QantasLink CEO John Gissing said the airline was delighted to be offering customers services between Brisbane and Miles. “We’re proud to be the first airline to operate a regular passenger service between Miles and Brisbane,” Mr Gissing said. "The services will also be a boost for LNG and supporting industries in the area.” Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Ray Brown said Miles residents will get the most benefit from QantasLink offering passenger flights from the upgraded Miles Aerodrome. "I commend QantasLink for being the first airline to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the newly upgraded Miles Aerodrome, which was funded by Origin Energy with assistance from Western Downs Regional Council,” Cr Brown said. “They will also be the first passenger flights available from any of our Western Downs aerodromes. "These QantasLink flights will make it easier for residents in Miles and the surrounding areas to travel to Brisbane and beyond. I have no doubt that our local communities will make the most of these new services." The new service will start on 14th April using a 50-seat Dash 8 Q300 and a 36-seat Dash 8 Q200 aircraft. The scheduled commercial service provides for 844 seats per week or 43,888 seats per annum. To celebrate the new route, special discount fares are available from $89, on sale until 12 March 2014, for travel from 14 April 2014 to 11 July 2014. Tickets are now available for sale on qantas.com or through travel agents. The Brisbane to Miles route is one of five new regional routes announced by Qantas to provide customers with direct services to more destinations on its domestic network.
An initiative of 4MBS Classic FM Radio station in Brisbane, the Silver Memories’ Programme is Australia’s own nostalgia radio station. Featuring popular music from the 20s to the 50s, the great musicals, comedies, serials, cheerio and birthday calls, poetry, stories and historical anecdotes will be on the air 24 hours a day, every day, on a radio system fitted into communal dining areas. Friends of Carinya recently applied through QGC for a grant to implement the Silver Memories’ Programme and were successful. Beginning in March, the programme will come into Carinya for 3 hours every day for 50 weeks. This initiative is supported by the WDRC who will take responsibility for maintaining the equipment needed to continue service delivery. No one wants to end up alone and isolated in a nursing home, but this programme has helped elders, in care facilities suffering from a wide range of cognitive and physical challenges, find renewed meaning and connection in their lives through the gift of personalized music. Residents suffering with Dementia will suddenly smile or sing as they recall memories triggered by the songs playing. University of Queensland research (2009) shows that listening to Silver Memories addresses social isolation in the elderly and has proven to be effective with dementia sufferers. Silver Memories’ Programme has proven to make residents happier and more social. It has deepened relationships among staff, residents and families. Everyone benefits from a calmer, more supportive social environment and there is growing evidence that a personalized music programme gives professionals one more tool in their effort to reduce reliance on anti-psychotic medications. The halls of Carinya will soon be filled with timeless performances by Louis Armstong, Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and the like. Carinya looks forward to reliving old memories and creating new ones together! “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” Plato Western Downs Regional Council - Carinya Hostel
The four other new routes are Brisbane to Port Macquarie, Melbourne to Coffs Harbour, Sydney to Hervey Bay and Sydney to Hamilton Island. Qantas Domestic CEO Lyell Strambi said the airline was delighted to be offering customers services on the new Qantas routes. “This is great news for tourism in Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Hervey Bay, Hamilton Island and Miles,” Mr Strambi said. “We’ve listened to our customers who told us they want direct services to these destinations, with most of them being popular holiday spots. “Customers would previously have to travel via another port, now they are able to travel direct to their holiday destination. “We looked at ways we can better use our aircraft, particularly on the weekends, and found network improvements resulting in additional aircraft being free to support these new routes. “Not only will this provide more choice for our customers, it is a good revenue opportunity for the Qantas Group.” Advance Western Downs

It is surmised that the new plant’s parents are G. sessilis from Queensland and G. paradoxa from Western Australia. As the two are widely separated botanically and regionally, G. ‘Dorothy Gordon’ produces no fertile seeds and hence flowers almost year round. Nita had success propagating several plants, one of which was planted on acacia/iron bark ridge soil in Brisbane. Plants from cuttings were also successfully grown on the Gold Coast by Peter Reilly. From this plant, test specimens were grown on coastal sands of Runaway Bay and clay loam of Nerang.
Planting Grevillea ‘Dorothy Gordon’ near a birdbath and in view of a secluded hide, bench or picture window will bring rewards for nature lovers, bird watchers and photographers. G. ‘Dorothy Gordon’ is also suited to individual plantings amongst exotics. It may be kept lightly pruned to a small dense shrub or as an informal hedged border. Ask OptomTom Your questions answered by the experts at Eyecare Eyewear
Will orthoK lenses stop me from becoming more short-sighted? Answer: Orthokeratology is the custom hard contact lens treatment where the front of the eye is reshaped from overnight wear. The usual result is clear sight without the need for glasses during the day. Recently, a further study has been published demonstrating a greater than 50% reduction in growth of the axial length of the eye with this treatment. An increase in axial length is one of the main reasons for progression in myopia or short-sightedness.

Urgent Chemical Alert! Your Health is at Serious Risk! Last month, I covered the need for adequate sleep and the negative effect it can have on your health right from your physical wellbeing through to mental health. If you missed this, I encourage you to take a look at last month’s magazine. This month, I am putting the spotlight on a very serious issue - preservatives. Now I know that some of you are thinking… “I have heard it all before”, however, this issue is much more widespread than you think. We are talking about not only food and drink but cleaning products, beauty products, personal care items, anything that can be absorbed, inhaled or ingested might be putting your health at risk. Preservatives come in many forms, shapes and sizes. They are used to prevent a product from expiring, going off,
rotting, or becoming ineffective. They can be used in food and drink, your shampoo, shaving cream, toothpaste, makeup, dishwashing liquid, soap and just about anything that you consume in your home. In 2013, a study by Anand and Sati called Artificial Preservatives and Their Harmful Effects: Looking Toward Nature For Safer Alternatives was released, giving conclusive evidence about the detrimental effects preservatives can have on your health. So you might be asking, “Then why is it on our shop shelves?” The answer is simply that there are not enough restrictive laws around our consumables. The study revealed a number of harmful side effects but the most alarming was that “preservatives such as nitrates, benzoates, sulfites, sorbates, parabens, formaldehyde, BHT, BHA and several others can cause serious health hazards such as hypersensitivity, allergy, asthma, hyperactivity, neurological damage and cancer.” “In young children, temper tantrums and disruptive behaviour” were observed. As well as “the use of these toxic chemicals by pregnant women may adversely affect foetal brain development.” “Toxins like these can cause DNA damage to sperm”. Although it doesn’t stop there,
other causes include: “severe allergic reactions and exacerbation of asthma, neurological damage in rats, skin, eye and lung irritation and allergies”. However, there is a silver lining; the study also concluded that “natural preservatives offer greater advantages over their artificial counterparts due to their non-toxic nature along with a wide range of health benefits.” Start looking through your home and begin eliminating things with ingredients such as sorbate, butylate, propionate and the big one PARABEN! C&K Murilla Kindy Update What our kindy kids have been up to... This term has been very busy with children exploring and engaging with a variety of experiences at C&K Murilla Kindy. Play-based learning is imperative for the development of essential skills for later learning, and at C&K Murilla Kindy the children have loads of options for developing skills through play. Outside, our children have been engaging in physical play that builds their gross motor skills and also allows opportunity for social development. Riding bikes has been very popular with some children being the traffic conductor using 'stop' and 'slow' signs. This game seems simple but it creates an opportunity for children to learn how to share and cooperate. They are also developing their knowledge of symbols as a form of communication, recognising the different shapes of signs and what these represent. This aids in the later development of word and letter recognition. Our lovely timber cubby house has also been popular with children engaging in imaginative play, role-playing and developing their emotional intelligence through games that involve looking after each other. Sand and water play are always favourites with our kindy kids, allowing the children to explore concepts of quantity and volume through using different sized containers. In the water trough children are also learning to count and organise items according to their characteristics with toy fish and a fishing net - counting and sorting the fish is a fun way to learn basic maths concepts! Another important aspect of preparing our children for school is developing their fine motor skills. While it may just look like craft to some, when our kids are cutting, gluing,

decorating and painting, they are practising coordination of the smaller muscle groups in their hands and fingers. This is essential for developing the coordination and control that they need when learning to write and form numbers and letters when they start school. During group time we have been discussing 'Kindy Rules' that help the children to understand respectful and inclusive interactions, positive communication skills, and how to stay safe at kindy. Our children have worked together with the teachers to make their own list of rules such as "make sure we pack away and clean up what we have been playing with" and "we are trying our best to be good listeners by looking at the person who is speaking, and speaking clearly". Children have been given opportunity to practice their listening and speaking skills with other group activities including regular 'show and tell' sessions and the mysterious "secret object bag" where children take turns to hide an item in the bag and others have to guess what it is by feel and verbal clues.
welcome aboard to our new President, Sarah Owens (nee Richards). A huge thank-you must go to the outgoing members who did a tremendous job operating our kindy in 2013, some of whom have been long-standing volunteers with C&K Murilla Kindy. Your support has been invaluable. The new committee is full of ideas and enthusiasm, ready to face whatever 2014 may bring. What's coming up... On Tuesday March 11th the children participated in a "Wild Hair Day" where they had their hair sprayed in a variety of colours to raise money for children's cancer research. Thank you to Toni Brown of La' Rose Hairstylists for donating your time for this activity. The children had a blast.
Next on the activities agenda for our kindy kids is an excursion to Dogwood Crossing to see the latest art exhibition in the John Mullins Memorial Art Gallery. Children will have a private tour of the exhibition and complete an activity that relates to Children have been learning about the weather, the exhibition. days of the week, months of the year and seasons In April we have a cooking session with Jodie and through a calendar discussion on kindy days.
