Wandoan Progress Dinner The Thornton sisters have dominated the ‘Business of the Year’ Awards at the annual dinner, held each year by the Wandoan and District Progress Association and the Wandoan Chamber of Commerce. Jodie Thornton took out the title with her hairdressing business, Jodie Thornton Hairdressing. Earlier in the year, Jodie moved into her own salon located in the main street of town where business has continued to boom. The runner-up ‘Business of the Year’ was presented to Rhianna Thornton, who operates the Wandoan Café. Karen Black from K & H Hardware was named the ‘Employee of the Year’, while runner-up was awarded to Eileen Rau from the Wandoan Pharmacy. Both were recognised by the community for their outstanding customer service which they provide week in, week out. The ‘Volunteer of the Year’ received the most nominations, but in the end, the title deservingly went to Kath Miles. Kath works at Landmark full time as the merchandise manager, and is involved with the Wandoan and District Kindergarten Association, the Wandoan Wildcats Junior Rugby League Club, the Wandoan Race Club and the Wandoan Gymnastics Club. She has been instrumental in running several fundraisers this year to keep the clubs viable, including the Mike Tyler Hypnotist night and the Kindy ‘My Kitchen Rules’ BBQ Cook-Off.

Editor’s Note Christmas is the time of year that we really see community spirit come alive in our regions. In between neighbourhood gatherings and family get togethers, we come together as a community and try to bring a little joy to the people around us. Whether it’s take your kids to visit Santa, donating to complete strangers through one of the charities that desperately need our help at this time of year, or maybe it’s just buying someone special a gift you know they will love, anything to make the people around us feel special. This season is all about giving and celebrating the year that’s been. Hopefully it’s been a good year for you and your family and you can reflect on those times, but if it hasn’t been so great, celebrate that it’s over and next year can only be better! The new year is just around the corner and with it, an opportunity to start fresh. Let’s hope that 2015 kicks off with a nice big wash down of all this dust, or maybe Santa can bring us some rain to fill our tanks and dams and dampen the paddocks, enough to grow some grass would be great! As it is the Christmas season please remember to support your LOCAL businesses! We have some fantastic businesses in the Western Downs and by shopping locally you are strengthening the local community and economy. Remember, every time you choose to spend money you are deciding what sort of community you want. There are many events over the next two months in our region, and our calendar opposite will give you a great idea of what is happening. Celebrate the year that was 2014 with the Miles Rising Leaders group on 12th December, continue your festivities at the Dawson Jockey Club on 27th December, and see the New Year in at the Miles Race Club Big BBQ Bash! You will find more details of these events plus others in your December Miles Lily. Find some time to sit quietly and enjoy your last magazine for 2014. Wishing you and your family a safe and Merry Christmas and I hope you have the opportunity to spend time with the special people in your life over this festive season.

Noonga Youth Activities – Tennis Camp With the support of Arrow Energy and the QCWA, a number of keen Noonga junior tennis players are heading off to Brisbane in the first week of the school holidays to participate in a tennis camp. Over three days the youth of Noonga will have expert coaching from “The Gap Tennis Centre” and also have the opportunity to visit the Pat Rafter arena. In addition, the children may experience many other adventures the city can offer them, and a multi-draw raffle is being run to raise funds to be able to participate in these activities. We have a number of upcoming events, including our Noonga Community Christmas Tree on Saturday 13th December at 6.00pm (Santa to arrive at 6.45). Please bring some nibblies, salad and dessert to share. Steak and sausages will be available for sale at cost price. Please bring your own crockery, cutlery and drinks. Parents are asked to please bring a gift, wrapped with your child’s name clearly marked so that Santa can personally present it to your child and have a photo opportunity. The Noonga Youth Activities – Multi Draw raffle will also be drawn during this event. Last minute tickets for the raffle are on sale at the Christmas Tree. Maranoa Division members were thrilled to be presented with prizes following judging at the State Competition finals at Conference held recently in Ipswich. The Conference was very lively and vibrant. Wednesday, all members dressed in citrus colours, as this was the agricultural theme for the year. Next year, the State has adopted ‘beetroot’, being put forward from Maranoa. There were many highlights over the few days, including: a Civic Reception by the Mayor of Ipswich, Paul Pisasale, opening of Conference by Mrs Kay de Jersey, the Fundraiser Dinner, presentation of $13,977 to Motor Neurone Research and the announcement that “Blaze Aid” will be the external appeal for 2015, were just a few. Many locals visited the Ipswich Civic Centre to view the wonderful display of competitions. Glynis Stevenson - Chinchilla Branch entry in ‘A Song Title’ of the floral art competition, was judged the Champion entry in that section. Well done, Glynis! Congratulations to Maria Keys from Condamine-Arubial Branch who was elected as the QCWA Vice President for Southern Region. We have a succession of Maranoa Division ladies voted to this position which is great for Western Downs, as the State Executive have regular meetings with State Government ministers to discuss any concerns affecting members State wide and Maria will be familiar to some affecting our Region. The new project ‘Country Kitchens’ will be launched at Stanthorpe late January and branches will be assisting in the promotion of good, healthy eating and active lifestyles. ‘Merry Christmas’ to all and a wish for rain to replenish the dams and soil is top of my list. Out & About
About National Rodeo Council of Australia (NRCA) The National Rodeo Council of Australia (NRCA) is the first non-profit organisation made up and run by a united body of rodeo associations nationally. Formed in 1992 to further the sport of rodeo, the National Rodeo Council of Australia provides assistance to members in administration, access to a national insurance scheme, training and safety programs, animal welfare and up to date government regulations and policies. The major goal and objectives for the NRCA has always been to have one voice, representing rodeo at government level by eliminating the confusion of separate groups making individual representations and to work alongside each member Association to actively promote the sport of rodeo in Australia. Each year a National Finals event is conducted bringing together the top riders from each of the member Associations creating a 'Truly Unique' Australian National Rodeo Finals event. The National Rodeo Finals event, is the only event of it’s kind to bring together individual Rodeo Associations to compete for the one championship title. National Rodeo Council of Australia (NRCA)

Cecily Brockhurst and Dogwood Crossing Art Gallery Committee Chairperson Roz Brownlie admire the works of Darryn Campbell's third instalment of his Ships of Light series. Background note: You may notice that the Swastika symbol has been used in this exhibition. The artist is interested in the use of this ancient symbol throughout history. In many cultures it is still used as a sign of wealth, prosperity and good fortune. Its inclusion is not intended to cause offence or endorse any connotations associated with its use during World War II.

Lifelong Love for Birds Leads to Voluntary Conservation When Wendy Moline was six years old her father held her up to a blue wren’s nest to see the fledgling chicks, in doing so igniting a passion for birds. Now living on a 20-acre block west of Millmerran, Wendy attributes her early experience in the beachside bush of northern Sydney to not only making her “mad about birds” but prompting her to voluntarily conserve wildlife in her own backyard. In February last year, Wendy registered her block ‘The Sanctuary’ with Land for Wildlife, a program run across the region by the Queensland Murray-Darling Committee (QMDC). The program recognises landholder efforts to conserve nature, offering advice and support to help improve land, create wildlife corridors and protect habitat.

Wendy recently formed a ‘Friends of the Sanctuary’ group through which she is planning a bird watching event in October 2015. “When I'm out there on ‘The Sanctuary’, which features ironbark, smooth-barked apple and cypress the verandah I sit and consider what the poor people are doing – and I'm a pine forest, is one of more than 250 properties now registered with Land for pensioner! MonaLisa Touch Toowoomba – the First Laser Treatment for Menopause Disorders It is an issue that affects many women, but one that most prefer not to discuss. Vaginal atrophy. From the time menopause approaches a loss of oestrogenic hormones can cause changes in the structure and function of the vagina. The walls of the vagina lose collagen, become thinner and the natural elasticity and blood supply is reduced. The protective mucosa of the vagina can lose hydration and thickness, causing a loss of lubrication and changes in the natural balance of the internal environment. This can cause symptoms such as vaginal itchiness & burning, dryness and loss of lubrication, incontinence and urinary urgency, prolapse and laxity, vaginal and vulval pain, and painful sexual intercourse. These symptoms can have a negative effect on your general well-being and, in many cases, place stress on your intimate relationships. Currently the most common treatment of vaginal atrophy requires an ongoing application of hormone replacement creams directly into the vagina. For a variety of reasons, some women are not able to use these creams, become uncomfortable with this process or are irregular with the application and eventually discontinue use.
Without an effective solution these women are forced to alter their lifestyle to cope with the symptoms. That is until now. There has been a breakthrough in the non-invasive treatment of vaginal atrophy, a light-based solution to help you feel like you again. In the past, laser procedures for gynaecology were largely reserved for invasive surgical procedures. The MonaLisa Touch treatment has transformed the application of this technology to create a procedure that is minimally invasive and suitable for most women. MonaLisa Touch is the first solution designed to naturally counteract the effects of hypotrophy of the vaginal mucosa. By stimulating the regeneration of new vaginal tissue MonaLisa Touch restores your body's natural balance and function.
without the side-effects of traditional treatments. The MonaLisa Touch treatment adds a new dimension to the treatment of this important health issue for women. It provides the ability to stimulate the natural regeneration of the vaginal tissue and counteract the physical and emotionally-draining effects of vaginal atrophy. And most exciting of all it will soon be available in Toowoomba! For more information go to www. monalisatouchtoowoomba.com.au or phone 4638 2700.
The MonaLisa Touch treatment is a fast and effective treatment that uses hundreds of tiny pillars of laser energy to stimulate the natural regeneration of the vaginal tissue. Living Eczema-Free: Five Natural Steps Which Might Help You Live an Eczema-Free Life CHECK YOUR
DIET FOR
HIDDEN ALLERGIES
If you are an eczema sufferer, it’s quite possible that the trigger for your condition lies in the food that you eat. There is ample research to show that dietary allergens help cause and perpetuate skin disease. Many of the food types that might cause eczema are well known and include: dairy products (especially milk and eggs); peanuts; gluten; soy; preservatives in food, including sulphites[1] (look for the numbers E220-228 on food labels) and colour and flavour enhancers[2] (MSG boosters like 627, 631, and 635)
You could also consider trying an elimination diet, which requires you to eliminate certain foods from your diet for a specified time (usually 3-4 weeks) before slowly reintroducing them, one food type at a time, until you discover what is causing your allergic reaction.[3]
REDUCE YOUR
EXPOSURE
TO TOXIC
ENVIRONMENTAL
CHEMICALS
The only way to escape exposure to the thousands of toxic chemicals which are part and parcel of modern day life is to live in a remote jungle, without access to technology, and all your food and clothing is sourced from the local fauna and flora. Not only can these chemicals trigger eczema in some people, they are being held increasingly accountable for the explosion of allergies generally that western society has witnessed in the last few decades.
•
Take the time to seek non-toxic products, read ingredient labels carefully and adhere to the following guidelines, you might help to relieve the incidence and severity of eczema: Select cleaning products made from plant-based materials and free of synthetic fragrances.
•
Avoid anti-bacterial soaps, and shampoos and toothpastes containing sulphates.
•
Use certified organic skincare and makeup products.
•
Choose organic fruits and vegetables for your family when you can. They have less pesticide residue.
•
Avoid using synthetic pesticides. Chemical weed and bug killers are particularly noxious and their use should be avoided both inside and outside the house.
•
To help ensure that pesticides and other chemicals do not enter the house, establish a ‘no shoe’ policy for your home.
•
Have your tap water tested and if contaminants are found, install a reverse osmosis water filter on all your faucets.
•
Do your research and make informed choices when it comes to your choice of furniture, bedding and clothes.
MAINTAIN THE HEALTH &
INTEGRITY
OF YOUR SKIN
Our skin has a mantle of healthy, natural bacteria that helps protect it. If these bacteria get out of balance and the skin becomes host to unwanted bacterial growth, it can lead to a heightened immune response which causes inflammation (and associated redness and itching). This is what happens when eczema flares up.
We should start by avoiding chemical surfactants (foaming agents known as sulphates and which, as noted above, we often find in everyday items such as our shampoo, our toothpaste and our laundry detergent). Further to this, we need to start using products that have the same pH balance as our skin.
[1]The Health Canada website contains an excellent list of foods containing sulphites – http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/pubs/securit/2012allergen_sulphites-sulfites/index-eng.php [2]The Food Intolerance Network offers an overview of flavour enhancers, their impact, and what foods you might find them in – http://fedup.com.au/factsheets/additive-and-natural-chemical-factsheets/635-ribo-rashribonucleotides-627-631 [3]Whilst visiting a specialist is always advised, a good overview of elimination diets can be found on the Precision Nutrition website – http://www.precisionnutrition.com/elimination-diet Any information provided herein does not constitute medical or health care advice for any health or individual problem. unique facts of the individual. Individuals should always consult a qualified health care provider about any health concern and prior to undertaking any new treatment or relying on any medical information.
The health of our gut is intimately connected to the health of our skin. If our gut is compromised, then our skin will most likely serve as a mirror, beset by breakouts that can range from sudden rashes and acne right through to severe cases of eczema or psoriasis.
LOOK AFTER YOUR GUT!
We should not only avoid an excess of grains, sugars and processed foods (as well as antibiotics where we can), but look to supplement our diet with probiotics and fermented foods. Whilst this might require us to substantially change our diet, the benefit for our gut, our skin and our health is likely to be enormous.
A problem o c c u r s though when we become overly stressed or stressed for extended periods of time. When this happens, our immune system is compromised and we get sick. Stress is associated with a number of different physical and psychological ailments and is known to be a key trigger in causing eczema.
MEDITATE
This is where meditation can be beneficial. It can take us outside whatever is bothering us, help us to breathe properly and provide us with the focus and peace of mind necessary to not only cope with external stressors but maximize our health. Eczema is not easily controlled and even more difficult to beat. But it doesn’t have to be a life-long sentence, continuously managed by pharmaceutical drugs. If you are prepared to put your mind to it, and put into action some of the lifestyle and dietary changes suggested above, then you will be giving yourself the best chance to get on top of this debilitating condition. Better Connected Care for Darling Downs Children Darling Downs children and families living with complex health conditions now have a dedicated local ‘care coordinator’ to help them access the various specialists and support services they need. Christine Coleborn based in Toowoomba Hospital, will support families across the region as part of Children’s Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service’s statewide Connected Care Program. Children’s Health Queensland Board Chair Susan Johnston said local care coordinators had been appointed across the state to improve access to quality care for every child and young person regardless of where they live. “The care coordinators will be a central point of contact for families and will focus on improving communication between a child’s various health care providers to ensure their care is managed seamlessly across the acute, community and primary healthcare sectors,” Ms Johnston said. Since the program’s launch in May 2014, care coordinators have been appointed in Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Bundaberg, Brisbane, Rockhampton, Christine Coleborn, Toowoomba Hospital Care Coordinator Mt Isa, Ipswich, Hervey Bay and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts. Young Queenslanders at Risk of Obesity-related Cancers An investigation by Cancer Council Queensland has revealed a 129 per cent increase in obesity-related cancers in young Queenslanders over a 30 year period. From 1982 (when cancer records commenced) to 2012, obesity-related cancers increased by 2.8 per cent each year in Queenslanders aged 20 to 29 years. Overweight and obesity increases the risk of developing cancers of the bowel, oesophagus, pancreas, kidney, endometrium, ovaries, gallbladder and thyroid. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said the trend was a cause for concern. “More research is needed to investigate whether obesity has been a contributing factor to the increasing rate of these cancers diagnosed among young Queenslanders over the past three decades. “The prevalence of adult overweight and obesity in Queensland is the highest in Australia, at 65 per cent, and is a significant threat to cancer control. “As a community we must support each other to eat a healthy diet, be physically active and maintain a healthy weight.” Up to one third of all cancers are preventable through healthy lifestyle choices including eating well, exercising and being a healthy weight. “More than a quarter of Queensland children are overweight or obese, with the number expected to rise significantly in the future,” Ms Clift said. “Helping our children create healthy, active lifestyles from a young age is vital to their long-term health and happiness. “Children aged five to 12 years and young adults aged 13 to 17 years should engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day. “There are many ways to help kids move more – walking or riding to school, joining team sports like netball or soccer, or playing in the park instead of spending time on the screen. “Equally importantly, we need to discourage sedentary activities – even if children are very physically active, they may experience negative health effects from sitting for long periods each day. “Giving gifts like skipping ropes and balls is a great way to get kids active, along with setting limits on screen time and making the child’s bedroom a TV or computer free zone.” Queensland schools, childcare centres, workplaces and sports clubs are invited to join the QUEST to lead healthier lives at quest.org.au. Getting Ready for the Silly Season It’s the season for parties, holidays, and fun with friends and loved ones. But it’s also time to start making plans for what you want to achieve in 2015. We’re not just accountants. We’re your business adviser and your sounding board. So, whether you’ve already made your new year’s resolutions or you need a hand to get on track… It’s December and we have officially hit the “silly season”. Chances are, you’re running around like a chook with its head cut off, shopping for gifts, attending end-of-year break ups, planning Christmas lunch and packing for family holidays. However, have you actually stopped to make sure you are truly ‘silly-season-ready’?

I don’t want to be all bar-hum-bug, but in amongst the frivolity, we have some tips for being prepared for the more serious side of the silly season. Do a budget: A survey by the Commonwealth Bank said on average, Aussies spend over $400 each on Christmas; that’s roughly $7.8 billion nationwide. If you are reading this and have no idea if you are above or below the average, then you need a budget. Many of us can get so caught up in the lights, the tinsel, and the spirit of giving that we forget about our other year-round commitments. Watch the credit: Christmas is a time of giving, however, that’s not an excuse to give your credit card a workout. This year, consider more thoughtful, less expensive gifts. Try some homemade gifts to bolster a ‘bought’ present, look for good bargains and support local businesses where you can. Cut out any unnecessary items. Be tough this year; before putting it in your basket, think, just need a dash of good planning and a sprinkle of discipline. Background of Backgrounders - Part 2 Steer trader breed types, a target market is just as important. Most commercial feedlotters will supply your agent with a feedlot entry specification grid, outlining weights, breeds and delivery instructions for successful induction into their feedlot; this may also be accompanied by a contract to purchase, outlining payment terms and trading terms and conditions (if using your local agent, this should all be taken care of on your behalf). Getting your steers up to the desired weights for feedlot entry is no different than the heifers, with the minimum weight generally around 300kg curfewed, and a maximum of up to 550kg. Currently, the feeder grids are looking for steers 300-360kg for the domestic 70 day grain fed yearling market. These steers must not have more than their 2 teeth to meet this market. The bullock or heavy feeder market is quoting 360-480kg with some feedlotters requiring them 400-550 kg. All of these heavy steers are paid a premium for milk and 2 teeth. Most feedlotters deduct up to 10 cents for steers with 4 teeth, due to the age of the steer and the possibility of him breaking 6 tooth during his 100-120 days in the feedlot prior to slaughter.
mind. For example, straight Brahman steers can, at domestic feeder weights, occasionally attract less competition by feedlotters than, for example, straight bred Angus steers. If your target market is the heavy feeder or bullock market, then both Brahmans and Angus will be highly sort after in the Saleyards and on a landed feedlot basis. Now that you’ve decided that back grounding suits your property, there are topics such as grazing practices, cell grazing, rotational and continuous grazing. These all require different levels of management. From my experience, as livestock salesman, I would suggest utilising the system that doesn’t degrade your land but allows for the greatest weight gains from your steers and heifers. The land and pasture program you undertake must be financially and physically viable - you will want to have a holiday at some stage!
Finally, you’ve got the young cattle out in the paddock, healthy, happy and tidy. However, to maximise your weight gains, it is important to know the capabilities of your pastures and crops you graze. It is, therefore, good practice to own your own scales as this will show you, not only the weight gains of your cattle, but provide a value of each paddock’s capabilities. For example, one of my clients knows that, on grass, his steers will average 0.6 kg gain per day during average seasonal conditions. Based on this knowledge, he can weigh his steers at the right time which reduces excess handling of livestock without affecting their overall performance. Backgrounding is an important part of the cattle industry which can be very rewarding. Hopefully, this has given you some insight or assistance in moving your livestock business towards backgrounding.
When receiving your first mob of backgrounders home, and unsure of previous treatments, it is good If you have any questions or require livestock purchased and marketed, please feel free to talk practice to: with the livestock team at Landmark Dalby. • vaccinate with 5in1 or 7in1 Livestock Manager, Brock Simpkins & Livestock • treat for internal and external parasites Salesman, Ian Newson • cross brand, tip or dehorn, and Breeds chosen for the domestic market (70 day) Landmark Dalby • apply a management tag stating owner and need to be purchased with your target market in date of purchase, if possible.
