Dawson River Festival The Dawson River Festival is always a highlight on the Taroom calendar and this year’s three-day event, at the end of September, didn’t disappoint. The festivities kicked off on Friday with the Dawson River Art Show and it was followed by an art, wine and cheese evening later that night. Nearly 200 people ventured to the Taroom Town Hall to see outback photographer, Scott Bridle, and feature artists, Wally and Helen Peart, Barbara Hancock, Elizabeth Corfe, Ann Cameron and Sandra Allen who go by the name ‘Six Artists from Nowhere’.
golf and bowls, as well as the annual duck race, there was never a dull moment for residents over the weekend. The Taroom Dawson River Festival is made possible each year by the Taroom District Development Association and sponsors: Santos GLNG Project, the Banana Shire Council and Wandoan Coal Project.

Condamine Bell Rodeo The Condamine Bell Rodeo returned with a vengeance on the 4th October, with a crowd of 1000 plus flocking to the Condamine Sports Grounds. A new Committee, with a vision to entertain, decided it was time for the iconic rodeo to be resurrected from the dust. The number of nominations was impressive, with many competitors following points in the NRA standings and travelling further than they ever have before. Each event had great nominations and the winners were grinners, thanks to substantial prize money being offered. It was fabulous to see so many local riders having a go and being victorious

in the Bullock Ride and the Novice Bull Ride. The entertainment of the rodeo went until after dark and then a DJ played fantastic dance music well into the night. Many locals have commented that it was a great day and how thrilled they are that the rodeo is back. Local community groups were able to use the day as a fundraiser and, along with the Rodeo Committee, are donating to a worthy charity – The Queensland Cancer Fund.
these companies and many more, the day would not have been possible. The support of local businesses and families was phenomenal and is a testament to small communities coming together to enable people to enjoy local events. The Rodeo Committee would like to thank all the sponsors, competitors, officials, stock contractors, volunteers and spectators for allowing the return of the Condamine Bell Rodeo to be such a roaring success. The rodeo will be back next year, so keep an eye out for the date and keep it free.
The major sponsors of the day were Ostwald Bros and SFPS (Class 1 Piping Specialists). Without Nicole Statham, Condamine Bell Rodeo Inc.

Leichhardt Garden Club For their October meeting, Leichhardt Garden Club members visited the revamped “Bridge Creek” garden of Emily Speed. Emily and her partner, Tom, have put a massive effort into creating a new and innovative garden after many years of different gardeners and numerous changes to the main structure of the garden. This young gardener has used art work, imagination and flair when selecting annuals and shrubs to fill the several rockery areas that abound in this garden. Sandstone rock, found on the property, has been used to great effect as points of interest and garden edging, while in one area of the garden, an old rickety ladder was used for a display of potted plants. All this abounds in and around some magnificent shade trees which skirt the recently renovated homestead. The next meeting of Leichhardt Garden Club will be held in the garden of Ross and Yvonne Christiansen, “Campo Santo” Taroom, commencing at 10.00 am on Wednesday, 12th November, 2014. Please note the change of day and date. This will be the Christmas break-up for the Garden Club, so an exchange Christmas present (value to $10) will take place if you wish to participate. The more athletic garden club members will be invited to join in with a game of lawn croquet or lawn bowls. Also visiting on the day will be the Taroom Kindergarten and Taroom Playgroup who will be bringing plants and garden ornaments for sale. Bring your chair, hat, lunch and a friend. Is Nutritional Management a Good Investment? Managing females for optimum reproduction is important. The aim of one (1) calf weaned per cow per year is as best as we can do. If you are close to this goal, what more can be done to ensure success? Nutritional management of the dam not only improves fertility, it also improves health and vigour of the off-spring. Small improvements in nutritional management reduce vet bills, improve daily gain and support the chance of getting 100% weaning rate. The best research in the field of calf and heifer nutrition is conducted on dairy animals; however, it is also relevant for beef cattle. Here are some tips from Dr Bob Corbett, a leader in the field of calf rearing and heifer development: Success starts before joining - By now it should be common knowledge that cow condition score directly influences her change of getting pregnant. Aim for score 3.5 – 4.0 on the 1 – 5 scale. A foetal calf is always hungry - Particularly in the 3rd trimester, the foetus demands glucose and protein from the cow. If the cow’s diet is deficient, foetal development and health is compromised. Pay attention to calf condition - A skinny calf has no reserves to draw upon, so is entirely dependent on dam colostrum and milk quality. A well fleshed calf at birth has a high chance of surviving and is less susceptible to disease. Feed the Dam for ultimate calf immunity - FPT (Failed Passive Transfer) describes a failed immune state of newborns. A blood serum concentration of less than 10 IgG/L is considered minimum for disease suppression. Calves with FPT have: • • • •
Delayed time to first calving Decreased growth rate for the first 180 days Decreased milk and fat production in the first lactation Have 50% less feed efficiency
We all know that energy intake is very important. Cattle can access energy from plant material, as long as they have enough protein in the diet. For the rumen to take advantage of energy and protein, it needs minerals. A balanced protein supplement, like Anipro, will stimulate the rumen and increase appetite. This, in turn, ensures strong foetal development and immunity of the newborn. Give a calf a healthy start to life by feeding the dam. It will cost less in the longrun. Colin Brosnan

Is your Accounting Fee Out of Control?
A client engagement letter is required when a new client is taken on by a professional accounting practice. Think of the engagement letter as a contract. It should outline what services will be provided (e.g. Income Tax, BAS, Bookkeeping, Audit, FBT, Payroll) and sometimes what services are specifically excluded. Client responsibilities, ownership of documents, limitation of liability and confirmation of terms will all be outlined in writing. You may request a fixed price fee to be agreed upon and stated in the engagement letter. Some firms will also list the hourly charge out rate for staff who will work on the engagement.

Accurate and timely data capture is key. The time to record, or in many cases, fix data entry can sometimes account for up to 80% of the accounting fee. Client education on what is required is critical to keep your fee to a minimum. If you mix personal and business transactions in one bank account, you can expect to pay your accountant extra for the privilege.

The $950,000 centre is the result of a partnership between the Darling Downs Hospital and Health “At this time, our proposed coal project has not Service (DDHHS) and resource company, Glencore. progressed due to the economic challenges confronting the coal industry. Notwithstanding, “This new building offers videoconferencing and we continue to have a presence in the area and state-of-the-art telehealth capabilities,” Mr Horan we remain committed to making a positive impact said. It replaces an ageing outpatient’s clinic and through support for community initiatives and offers a new model of health care not previously groups.” available to residents of Wandoan and surrounds.” “The Health Clinic has been an inclusive community Glencore contributed $750,000 towards the initiative that was based on extensive consultation construction of the clinic, with additional funds with all parties, particularly residents and health coming from the DDHHS and the Western Downs professionals.” Regional Council through a community grant. “We’re delighted that the new facility has improved Glencore representative, Group Manager of Project community access to general practice and Delivery, Scott Elliot, was one of many guests who outpatient services.” attended the opening event.

The Centre opened for consultations in September last year and is manned full-time by Nurse Practitioner, Paul Baker. It also has facilities to accommodate regular visits from other health care professionals including General Practitioners from Miles, a social worker, occupational therapist, podiatrist and physiotherapist. Mr Baker said the Centre had become not only a place to receive health care, but also something the wider community had become rightly proud of. “The Wandoan Health Auxiliary was formed last year, with 20 community members joining the group,” he said. “There is a huge amount of goodwill in the community toward the Health Centre.” Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service

Breast Screening Saves Lives, New Report Shows More Queenslanders are participating in breast cancer screening than the national average and mortality rates are dropping according to a new report released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare today. The BreastScreen Australia monitoring report 2011-2012 showed Queensland had the fourthhighest uptake rate of breast screening in the country, with 57 per cent of eligible women having a mammogram in 2011/12, compared to around 54 per cent nationally. The report also showed a decline in breast cancer mortality across Australia, attributed, in part, to the early detection of breast cancer through participation in BreastScreen programs nationally. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson, Katie Clift, said the trends were promising. “We’ve seen a significant drop in breast cancer mortality from 48 deaths per 100,000 women in 2007 to 44 deaths per 100,000 women in 2011,” Ms Clift said.
Cancer Council Queensland recommends women aged 50-74 have a mammogram every two years through BreastScreen Queensland. “Queensland women should be breast aware and familiarise themselves with the normal look “A Cancer Council Queensland study*, released and feel of their breasts,” Ms Clift said. “All women earlier this year, showed women screened by should also see a doctor immediately if they BreastScreen Queensland have better survival notice any unusual breast changes.” than those not screened, even after adjusting for tumour stage. “This is a testament to the success of the BreastScreen Queensland mobile vans that visit regional areas every year, a crucial initiative funded by the State Government.”
Since BreastScreen Australia began in 1991, mortality has decreased from 68 deaths per 100,000 women to 44 deaths per 100,000 women in 2011.

Breast Cancer Survivors Laser Away Painful Memories Pink” Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. Ladies who have conquered cancer often would like a fresh start with a clean slate and we can help you do just that. Surviving breast cancer is one of the bravest and most challenging things a person can accomplish. Unfortunately, even for those who manage to beat the disease, many still come out bearing battle scars. Cancer patients who receive radiation treatment have a small blue or black tattoo on their skin to accurately aim the radiation on the treatment area. Many survivors, who have undergone radiation therapy, find this mark unsightly, a painful reminder of their traumatic experience. Or they may not like having visible ink on their body. Many women would like to remove this tattoo as a final step towards healing and full recovery.
“Many of us have a friend or loved one who has battled Breast Cancer,” said Dr Roos. “We would like to support these women by removing radiation marks that they no longer wish to see, and in doing so, help them to close this chapter of their lives. In most cases, we remove tattoos that people once liked but now no longer want. Breast cancer patients never wanted the tattoos to begin with, so we are happy to be a part of such a worthy cause.” Cosmetic Elegance Clinic is the biggest Laser Clinic west of Brisbane and all of their laser consultants have a laser safety licence and are registered with Queensland Health. You’ll be in good hands from the moment you step through their doors. To make a booking, phone 07 4638 2700.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Cosmetic Elegance Clinic Month and Dr Eddie Roos of Cosmetic Elegance Clinic is one of the physicians around the country who are doing their part to support breast cancer survivors. Using the revolutionary PicoSure laser, radiation marks can be removed with the best tattoo removal laser on the world market.

Ask OptomTom Your questions answered by the experts at Eyecare Eyewear
Question: Is it Safe to Sleep in Orthokeratology Contact Lenses? For many years now, optometrists have been prescribing contact lenses for overnight wear. While all forms of contact lens wear carry risks of eye infection, it was generally accepted that overnight wear would heighten the risk of such infections. However, recent research has found that while orthokeratology lens wearers are slightly more susceptible to infection than daily wear soft contact lens wearers, they are almost 3 times less likely to get an infection than patients who regularly sleep in their soft contact lenses.
importance of discussing with your optometrist the correct way to insert, remove and clean your contact lenses.
Orthokeratology is the fitting of specially designed gas permeable contact lenses that you wear overnight. While you are asleep, the lenses gently reshape the front surface of your eye so you can see clearly the following day after you remove the lenses when you wake up. It is suitable for almost all types of prescriptions and has also been found to be one of the most In almost all cases of microbial keratitis (eye effective ways to slow the progression of myopia infection) with orthokeratology, it has been found or shortsightedness. that patients were using tap water for contact lens cleaning and storage. Slide on Sunnies Daily As summer beckons, Cancer Council is urging Queenslanders to slide on sunnies daily to protect themselves from cataracts, serious retina damage and cancers on the surface of the eye. Part of the Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide campaign, Queenslanders are reminded to slide on wraparound sunglasses along with using sunscreen and slapping on a hat for best protection against the sun. Nearly half of 25-34 year old Queenslanders wear wrap-around sunglasses when outdoors, compared to about 30 per cent of those aged 16-24 and over the age 55*. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson, Katie Clift, said eye protection was vital at all times when outdoors during daylight hours. “We ask Queenslanders to Slip, Slop, Slap whenever the UV Index is three or above – but when it comes to eye protection, the recommendations are a little different,” Ms Clift said.
Miles Golf Club Junior Golf Clinics As of Thursday, 9th October, the Miles Golf Club will be holding clinics for juniors at 3.30pm; this will be going until the Christmas breakup. Please provide any equipment, water and a shady hat for your children. We have some equipment available, if required. Afterwards, we will have a 3-4 hole competition for those children who would like to play, but we will need parents to do so. For more information, please contact colleyscorner@bigpond.com or phone Sharron on 0416077963. Please forward to anyone who would be interested. Thank you for supporting a local community club! Miles Golf Club
“Damage to the eye can occur regardless of the UV Index level, so it’s essential that Queenslanders wear wraparound sunglasses at all times when outside during daylight hours.” “Be sure to reduce exposure of the eye to UV radiation as much as possible, ensure your sunglasses meet the Australian/New Zealand standard and wear a broad-brimmed hat.” “Choosing wraparound, close-fitting, large-lens sunglasses provides the best protection by reducing direct and reflected UV radiation and glare.” “Wearing a broad-brimmed hat, along with wraparound sunglasses, can reduce UV radiation exposure to the eyes by up to 98 per cent.” It’s estimated around 20 per cent of cataracts occur due to UV radiation exposure to the eye. Cancer Council Queensland recommends Queenslanders choose a pair of sunglasses that meet the Australian/ New Zealand Standard and have the correct classifications and labelling. “Always look for wrap-around sunglasses that meet the Australian/ New Zealand Standard 1067:2003 and an Eye Protection Factor (EPF) 10,” Ms Clift said. “Choose sunglasses with a clearly-labelled lens category two, three or four, rather than basic fashion spectacles.” “The Standard doesn’t cover tinted or prescription glasses – though some may provide protection from UV or be coated with a UV protective layer.” “If you wear prescription glasses, ask your optometrist about the level of UV protection they provide.” Cancer Council-endorsed prescription lens coatings that block up to 95 per cent of transmitted and reflected UV are available from optical outlets, for use on prescription lenses.” More information about Cancer Council Queensland and staying SunSmart is available on 13 11 20 or cancerqld.org.au.
