The festivities were made complete with themed decorations and an array of authentically Mexican food and beverages, while a piñata was a popular hit with the children. The evening attracted a strong attendance of around 60 guests, and also served as a membership drive, resulting in a number of new members joining the Condamine Sports Club. The Committee has recently gained several new members and the club aims to hold an increased selection of sporting and social events throughout the year, including a Derby Day function on Saturday, November 1 this year. Sarah Stiller at the Ekka, 2014 There are so many words Sarah Stiller could use to describe her time at the Ekka as a Queensland Country Life Showgirl finalist, but she wisely sums it up by saying it was a great time with great people. She’d been told by past Showgirls that she would have the time of her life at the Brisbane Exhibition, and after experiencing the finals firsthand Sarah is ready to preach to the converted. Sarah’s Showgirl journey first started when she entered her local competition in Wandoan. She was selected to represent the agricultural town at the South West regional finals, which this year was held in Dirranbandi. The win at a regional level was her ticket to Brisbane for four unforgettable days, with ten other finalists from across the state. For Sarah, her highlights of the Showgirl finals was the celebration dinner with family and friends, a day at the Ekka with the other entrants, and a formal luncheon at Parliament House. “Everything in the program was just amazing, but those are
definitely some of the things I enjoyed the most,” Sarah said. Also on the itinerary was a tour of the Queensland Country Life headquarters, a visit to the Childhood Cancer Centre, meeting the various sponsors of the competition, and of course tasting the best strawberries and icecream the Ekka has to offer.
Foundation chairman of the Miss Showgirl awards Graham Jensen OAM has a great time meeting Sarah Stiller, Wandoan, and Lauren Fisher, Bell. Photo: Andrea Crothers, Queensland Country Life.
Sarah said she expected to get along with the questions fired at you. To go through the interview other ladies in the finals, but wasn’t quite prepared process was quite intimidating, but it got easier for the end outcome. along the way. “I thought I could spend four enjoyable days with people I expected to get along with, but I didn’t think we’d all become actual friends,” Sarah said. “Even after such a short time it was hard to leave each other. It’s true when they say you do make friends for life.

“The Showgirl competition has been a brilliant opportunity. I’ve travelled to places I never thought of going to before, I’ve met new people even at a local level, and I’m made so many new friends. “The Showgirl concept is about promoting shows and trying to get more people involved in such a wonderful tradition,” Sarah said. Even though Sarah is in Brisbane studying a bachelor of arts and communications degree, majoring in peace and conflict studies and political science, she plans to continue her involvement with her local show and inspire other girls to follow in her footsteps.
“Personally I got a lot out of the competition, and the biggest thing was self-confidence. You get the opportunity to speak in front of Andrea Schulz crowds with all sorts of

Focus on the Light Horse Being the Year of the Horse and the Centenary of the Declaration of War in Europe, the Miles Historical Village Museum is showcasing its Australian Light Horse Collection on Saturday, the 13th September. It has been a revelation to see the extensive range of powerful photographs taken in Egypt, Palestine and the Sinai showing the Australians preparing for battle, engaging in skirmishes, resting after battles. The images of the young men in their neat uniforms, photographed before embarkation, is often a dramatic difference to their appearance in the desert battlegrounds. The display contains documents relating to their enlistment as well as souvenirs and keepsakes important enough to bring back home. There are a number of patriotic panels embroidered by Egyptian craftsmen encasing images of the soldiers.
The display demonstrates the uniforms, weaponry and equipment used by the Light Horse Troopers, as well as the harness and livery which equipped the horses. Very emotive artefacts from local families are housed at the Museum – members from the Topp, Borgstahl, Genge, Alexander, Mundell, Clift and Ford Families. Our research has revealed the mystery of the ‘Kangaroo Feather’ and the jealousies, conflicts and discontent caused by the saga. This fascinating story will be revealed on the Anniversary Day held at the Miles Historical Village War Museum. Five troopers from the 11th Light Horse Darling Downs Troop will not only be leading the street parade up to the Historical Village Museum, but will also provide information about the Light Horse at the Village throughout the afternoon. Noonga Notes
Wandoan Pony Club News
Noonga Seniors’ Morning This week was Seniors’ Week and the Noonga Community Association wanted to acknowledge the contribution of the seniors in the community and decided to be part of this week of celebration.
Members and Friends of the Wandoan & District Pony Club are pleased to announce the success of our QGC Sustainable Communities Fund Grant. The funding will go towards much needed upgrades to our Cross Country Course.
The State Government distributed $100,000 for Seniors’ Week through the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disabilities and COTA Qld donated $73000 and the Noonga Community Association was fortunate to be one of the lucky recipients of both grants. This Adele and Ted Andrews has been our second successful grant through the Department of Communities and so the association was able to provide a morning of activities for our seniors, including a free morning tea and lunch. The Maranoa Be Healthy program and the Maranoa Regional Council also supported this event. Seniors from Miles to Yuleba travelled out to Noonga in private cars and community buses. No doubt, there was much reminiscing about earlier trips to dances, tennis days, bowls and other social occasions. The history of Noonga Dell Richardson and Ethel Priestly was on display with a photographic slide show and posters depicting early Noonga identities, previous functions and events. Noonga provided a complete entertainment package which included quiz questions and words of wisdom on aging. Guest speaker, Lisa Seiler from Vital Health in Roma, addressed the audience on the importance of activity and good health when reaching the senior years and had everyone up and practising some good moves. Of the 71 guests, many went home with a prize, either from the cent auction, or chose the lucky chair or coffee cup. Various stalls, selling produce ranging from jams, cakes, toys, jewellery and beauty products, adorned the hall. The youth of Noonga was on display with Brently and Marnie Leahy taking time off school to help sell tickets and to serve. The photos by our amateur photographer, Alice Sinnamon, also were on display. Our local young film producer, Clancy Sinnamon, was also asked to talk about his first semester at Bond University; his subject was “Critical Thinking”.
Annette Kerwick and Noreen Bourne note in your diary to attend this exciting event as either a spectator or a player. The Tennis Club has been able to attract generous sponsorship to the tune of $1000.00 from major sponsor, Neil Mansell, and minor sponsors, Westrex Jackson and Ostwald brothers.
A canteen and bar will be operating throughout the day and the Club would like to emphasise that the area is fully fenced so that the little ones Members of the Noonga Community Association can run around safely while Mum and/or Dad are would like to thank everyone for attending and occupied on the tennis court. for making this another memorable occasion. With QGC’s generosity of $23,455, upgrades will include the rejuvenation of current jumps and also the addition of new jumps. Each jump comprises three different heights and we are combining 10 new jumps with current jumps already constructed. We will now have the opportunity for Wandoan Pony Club to host One Day Events and Hunter Trials with the prospect of hosting Regional and possibly, State Events. This will give our community and the broader community a huge boost and will put us on the map as there are no other Cross Country Courses available in this area. We can now offer our members the training and correct equipment to aspire to achieve a higher standard of riding and horsemanship. In the past, we have had some great riders go through our Club with great successes, and at the moment, we have some talented up and coming juniors. We are so appreciative of QGC’s support for this opportunity to purchase this new equipment for our children, giving them the chance to better themselves and broaden their horse riding opportunities. President, Mr Paul Eggerling, said that with these new upgrades, Wandoan Pony Club was hoping to attract new members while retaining our current members. The value of local children participating in sports, especially horse sports, is an integral part of our community. Our Pony Club is a huge part of country living and we certainly don’t want to see this tradition fade away. QGC Vice President, Brett Smith, said that QGC Sustainable Communities Fund was a critical element of QGC’s commitment to ensuring local communities benefit on an enduring basis. We are currently underway with the design and layout and hope to have construction started within the next couple of months. Once again, a huge thank you to QGC!! Wandoan Pony Club

Miles & District Historical Society Inc Funding for Urgent Electrical Works The Miles and District Historical Society Inc recently contracted local electrician, Brian Wright, to undertake a large amount of urgent electrical maintenance and some upgrading work within the Miles Historical Village Museum along with the installation of sensor lights. Western Downs Regional Council, through their Minor Grant’s scheme, contributed $10,000 towards the project and Cameby Downs Community Investment Program contributed $4090 towards the project. The work carried out included urgent safety work that was required, as well as the installation of sensor lights within the buildings. Mr Wright also installed extra power points and spot lights for use during events within the Village. The Society’s President, Kerry Mulholland, said, “The work carried out by Brian will assist in the preservation of the collection and the extra power points and spot lights will make setting up for events so much easier and improve the safety for visitors by reducing the number of extension cords throughout the Village.” Mr Mulholland also said, “The Society would like to thank Council, Cameby Downs and Brian Wright for enabling this project to happen”. On the Land
Do Your Livestock Rest Enough? If cattle and sheep are resting, they are doing 1 of 3 things. 1: chewing their cud (this is good), 2: resting (this is also good), or 3: going hungry (not-so good). Manipulating grazing to short but effective grazing times encourages rumination and resting and hopefully, limits hunger pains. Average grazing times for livestock are shown in the table below. The average grazing time is affected by many factors. We have limited control over three items on that list: breed, water availability and pasture. Given that breed is usually not-negotiable for most producers and water infrastructure is not easily changed, then pasture availability is what we can somewhat manage on a short term basis. Average grazing times: Sheep - 10 hrs; Dairy Cattle - 8 hrs; Beef Cattle - 9 hrs Factors that influence grazing time (source: www.animalbehaviour.net) Seasons and diurnal patterns

Social Organisation Resting = less energy spent = more $$ Sheep and cattle graze for three hours after sun-up and for a period in the afternoon before sunset. Cattle also have a night-time grazing period. Day-time is left for rumination and resting. Temperature humidity and the availability of shade directly influence these times. Grazing time is also a function of bite size and bite rate. As pasture bulk and nutrient value increases, the animal can take more bites per minute, which equals less grazing time. Conversely, if animals have to walk further to find each mouthful, bites per minute drop and grazing time goes up. Animals have a threshold which is usually noticed during a drought. For instance, cattle refuse to graze longer than 12 hours a day. They make this decision based on energy economics. Supplement to encourage rest Supplementing the missing nutrients in a diet, usually protein, will manipulate animals digestive system. An active rumen can process forage faster. A stomach (rumen) that empties quicker stimulates appetite. Sometimes grazing time increases, but the pay-off is more energy from the diet, with surplus energy (after grazing) for growth or reproduction. So it pays to pay attention to how long your animals are resting. The more time they spend on their feet, the less energy they have to grow. Colin Brosnan

Murilla C&K Kindergarten Happenings As part of our community awareness, the local Police and Ambulance were asked to visit our Kindergarten recently. Policeman Garry, who is father to Archie in our group, spent some time with the children. He firstly asked them what the police do in our community. The replies varied from “shooting the bad people” to “shooting the wolves!!!” Garry assured the children that the police are there to help them and to keep them safe. He then allowed them access to the police car. The children were thrilled to be allowed to wear a police hat and vest and participated in using the siren and speaking to other police over the radio. By the end of the session, all were familiar with why our police are in our community and that is to keep us all safe. A BIG thank you to Garry, our local policeman!
A few days later, Chris and Dave came in their Ambulance and showed the children all through their ambulance and demonstrated how everything works. Some children were a little reluctant at first, but all soon warmed to the idea of trying out the stretcher and having their Oxygen levels checked. They even checked my blood pressure and checked how many beats to the minute each child’s heart would beat. All thoroughly enjoyed the experience and gave Chris and Dave a hearty cheer as they headed off with the sirens going!! A BIG thank you to Chris and Dave for giving up their time to spend time at our Kindergarten!
This term, we are concentrating more on the alphabet and counting and so far have done ‘P’ and ‘N’, displayed as Pink and Purple Poodles and The Night Sky. Then we did ‘C’ and ‘K’ and crafted a colourful Very Hungry Caterpillar which stretches right across my office window!! We had our own Commonwealth Games with Medals which all the children loved as they all scored a gold medal of course!!!
Thanks to our wonderful President, Sarah Richards, and her husband, Anthony, we now have a Vegie Garden with a variety of vegies growing and bush pathways through our bunch of trees. Under the trees, the children have set up a “fireplace” and are spending a lot of their play time “cooking” and tending the camp fire and sink. The more active members use our pathways for running and playing catch, so it is proving to be a wonderful asset for our children!! Ms Christine came to help for the day and we We hope to plant more trees and shrubs and made Chocolate Crackles which fitted in very well with letter ‘C’. We all enjoyed eating them after eating our lunch of course! We made some Australian animals such as kangaroos, koalas and kookaburras for ‘K’ to represent a bush scene. To our Bush Scene, we were able to add Echidnas and then Giddy Goanna for ‘G’. For ‘H’ we used a well-known nursery rhyme, with Humpty Dumpty being a favourite craft now hanging around our room.
down the track, will have a chook yard and real chooks so that will enable us to learn about the responsibility of feeding and watering animals as well as keeping our vegetables growing and thriving in our Garden. We may prove to be selfsustainable with vegies from our garden and eggs from our hens!! Sue Reilly Director - Murilla C&K Kindergarten During Bookweek, we talked about Books and because we are doing ‘D’, we are making Dinosaur masks which, as we all know, are a favourite with most children. With our masks, we hope to do counting songs and practise our numbers. The children were asked to dress up as their favourite book character. We ended up with a wonderful variety as seen in the picture and all had a fabulous time pretending to be the characters.

Chaplaincy Dinner On Friday, 15th August, the Miles State High School Home Economics and Hospitality team catered for approximately 70 guests in the Columboola Centre. The students did a marvellous job of serving a three course meal. Anna Sunio, one of our senior students, also sang, entertaining the guests with her beautiful voice. The Chaplain undertakes great work in our schools, supporting staff and students, and it was fitting that the students show their appreciation through this dinner. Miles State High School

Happiness at Work Pays Off It’s no surprise that most of us would prefer to be part of a happy workplace, rather than an unhappy one. Our team value of “enjoyment” is one of the things I love most about being part of the BMO team. But did you know that a happy workplace is also a more productive one? So how do you create a happy workplace? Here’s a few courtesy tips I picked up at a recent seminar with guest speaker “Dr Happy” (Tim Sharp) from the Happiness Institute. BE OPTIMISTIC. Optimists make better leaders. Set BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) but keep your eye on the reality of the day. Optimism is about looking forward. The best optimists also know how to aim high without ignoring day-to-day issues. BMO team members (L–R) Aimee Gilbert, Sam Fermor and Jasmine Gash FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE. We often spend too many resources managing our worst performers. An effective management tool is to reinforce the our team members not to be afraid to fail. As Alfred Lord Tennyson said, “It’s best qualities of the best people. It doesn’t mean you ignore those who are better to have tried and failed than to live life wondering what would’ve happened if I had tried”. underperforming - but rather adopt a strength-based approach. PRACTISE GRATITUDE. Appreciate what you have. When you are faced with a stressful event, put it in perspective. For example, if your computer program shuts down, stop and think about how many people in the world will die today because they are hungry. About 22,000. All of a sudden having to restart your computer doesn’t seem quite so dire.
CELEBRATE. Shine the light on what’s right. Celebrate. It doesn’t cost you anything to say ‘thank you’, and it could actually improve your business’ bottom line. Try sprinkling a little more happy dust around your workplaces. Start with a smile and ‘thank you’. You might be surprised by the results!
RESILIENCE. Dr Happy says resilience is one of the most important traits to Megan James, BMO Communications Manager encourage and develop. This means shifting away from the “self-esteem” BMO Financial Solutions movement where “everyone got a ribbon”. Instead, we need to encourage

The Sydney Morning Herald in November 2013 reported Xero shares to have surged by 425 percent in just a year with it being tipped to grow to a $10bn Nasdaq stock within five years, which is almost three times its present growth.

WHY CHOOS GR A N T E WALKE R?
Business
Business Brokerage Caveat Emptor is a legal term with the meaning of “let the buyer beware”. But it can equally apply to a seller or prospective seller of a small business. Often a business brokerage brand will cold call a seller or bombard them with marketing material fishing for a listing. As a seller of a small business, you need to be aware that if these brokers are asking for a significant amount of money upfront (often $10,000 or more) then they are selling advertising and have no vested interest in your business actually being sold. Typically, they will put an impressive advertising campaign in place for a fraction of the cost they charge you. A giveaway, that you may be in the process of being groomed as a target, will be that they tell you what you want to hear in connection with the sale or list price. This is often unfounded and not a realistic expectation. There are several methods of valuation which may be applied to a small business. The most appropriate method will depend on the industry you are in and the nature of your business. The most common is the “future maintainable earnings method”. This is where a net profit figure is derived after adjusting for a market salary of the owners if they work in the business and other add back items such as depreciation and extra-ordinary income or expenses. Then, a multiple of the earnings will be applied to arrive at a valuation or a valuation range. Quite simply, the driving force behind a valuation will be the adjusted net profit. If the business is profitable and a buyer can be confident of a return after employing someone to manage or run the business, then a premium will be paid. Surplus assets will also be taken into consideration. The goodwill of a business is intangible and difficult to measure. Types of goodwill to consider when providing a valuation of a business are: locational goodwill, goodwill specific to the owner’s expertise or intellectual knowledge and general goodwill of the business generated from trading history and customer base. Grant Walker is a licenced business broker and has been a member of the Sell-A-Business team for over 3 years. As a Chartered Accountant, Grant also has extensive business valuations experience and has attended many seminars in connection with this very specialized area. GB Walker & Associates

What our Customers are Saying. Is your accountant proactive in keeping your fee to a minimum? “Grant took the novel approach of educating me so I could assist in putting part of the year end file and working paper back up together. The result was a 50% reduction in our annual accounting fee” Wayne Naumann - Courier and Landscaping Business Owner Does your accountant give personalized service and maximize your refund entitlement? “Attempts to do my own tax resulted in me owing the tax office money. Grant was able to identify a number of areas where my claim could be improved including a motor vehicle logbook which reduced my taxable income below the HELP debt repayment threshold. I came out with a refund of over $2,000! Grant also provided 5 star service meeting me at home around my hectic schedule at a highly competitive price” Sarah Batt - Veterinarian “Grant provided personalized service and met us in the comfort of our own home. This proved to be very convenient when it was discovered that I was missing records. I simply went to the filing cabinet and pulled them out. Grant was very thorough in his work and identified prior year errors (not claiming GST paid expenses) and refunds we were entitled to which our previous tax agents had missed resulting in a windfall tax refund for us” David & Delora Jones - Business start up owners of Training Calandar

Laser – the Future in Fresh & Healthy Skin Light has been around since creation. Light from the sun causes damage to the skin and prematurely ages our skin. Ironically, light treatment can also be used to rejuvenate the skin and reverse the effects of sun-damage. Laser treatments are relatively quick, with little downtime and fast healing. In fact, it is this healing that the laser therapy relies on. In a recent Cosmetic Magazine article, Dr Roos was quoted, “Fraxel fractional laser penetrates the upper layers of the skin and causes a degree of thermal damage which triggers the body’s healing response and stimulates the production of new collagen at the treatment site. This results in smoothing, plumping and rejuvenating the skin.” Laser tattoo removal has reached new heights too. The PicoSure uses the latest acoustic wave technology to shatter ink into small particles which the body absorbs. Not only is this laser safer to use and less painful than previous lasers, the wavelength of the laser makes it more effective in removing difficult ink colours such as blues and greens.

Question: My boss has asked me to get prescription safety glasses. How are they different from my normal glasses? In addition to offering clear vision, prescription safety glasses provide front and side impact protection. They are manufactured by specialty optical laboratories who implement quality management systems. This ensures that they provide glasses that are certified to standards dictated by SAI Global (AS/NZS 1337.6:2007). One of the requirements for this standard (ISO9000) is that one in every ten pairs is sampled for durability. Prescription safety glasses are specially engraved and issued with documentation relating to their compliance with the standards. They can be worn as the eyewear component of the personal protective equipment required in many work environments. Some are even non-conductive and thus suitable for electricians. They are also the preferred eyewear for some sportspeople and farm workers.

Prescription safety glasses are available in all lens designs, including progressives, bifocals, photochromic (change colour when outdoors) and polarised. To ensure optimal protection, it is important that the frame selected is well fitting. This is why, in my opinion, it is important that you find a provider who is experienced with dispensing these products and has a large range from which to choose.
