The Jandowae Timbertown Festival is completely dependent on the support of generous sponsors and the Jandowae Community as a whole. Without this support,
Jandowae could not claim to host one of the biggest events on the Western Downs Calendar and you would miss out on the fantastic experience that is Timbertown!
Welcome to On behalf of the Timbertown Festival Committee, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all, and thank you for visiting and supporting our community. Since the very first Timbertown Festival was held in 2001 to celebrate the important contributions the timber milling industry made to our way of life, the now biennial Festival has become a significant event on our local and regional calendar, and has won Regional Australia Day Awards for the past two Festivals. Many things have changed over the years, including committee members, local industry and the scope of our Festival, but one thing remains the same - our Festival is owned by the community and continues to provide a dynamic fundraising event which aims to benefit as many local groups and organisations as we can every two years.

The foresight of past committee’s has served as an inspiration to all those people who are involved in the 2014 Timbertown Festival. I The 2014 Festival program would also like to acknowledge promises to be bigger and better; that quality events like the the Festival comes alive on Timbertown Festival are not
possible without the support of key sponsors. Our Committee would like to acknowledge our major partner for 2014 - Western Downs Regional Council, and to sincerely thank our many wonderful sponsors for their support and generosity. I hope you have a great time celebrating our culture, and let’s keep this great community event going for many years to come! Darryl Donald President Jandowae Timbertown Festival

Athlone Cottage
The original Athlone Cottage was a slab hut with an ant bed flood, built in 1890 by a butcher, Mr White. It was situated near where the Jandowae Dam is now, about 5kms north east of town. Around 1930 it was extended to include a kitchen, bathroom, verandah and a wooden floor. Prior to the Jandowae Dam being built in the 1960s, it was moved across the road to the property “Athlone. It was occupied up until the 1970s and was then used as a storage facility. In 2001, the then owners of the property, Peter and Barbara Rathmell donated the cottage to the Progress and
Heritage Association and it was moved to its present site. After restoration it was opened to the public in 2004. Since then a ramp for the disabled has been added
and other old buildings moved to the site. * Article thanks to Jandowae Progress & Heritage Association

Gowan Lea Sawmill
Timber in Jandowae The timber industry has, over the years, been a very important part of the economy of Jandowae and surrounding districts. In the past, there have been at least eight sawmills operating in the Jandowae area and two Forestry camps - ‘Fairylands’ and ‘Ballon’. Each of these Forestry Stations were a small community in themselves with many families living there. They even required their own schools. In 1946, Jack, Jimmy and George Blinco opened their mill in Hickey Street. Almost all the early mills, including this one, were steam driven. Later, their forestry licence and original steam engine were transferred to the Ballon Mill.
In the early days, Ballon Mill logs were carted to the mill by bullock teams. It was closed in 1989 after being purchased by Gowan Lea Sawmilling Company. In the late 1940s, Ellis, Ellis and Blinco formed a partnership and started a sawmill on the corner of Sydney and George Streets. It would later be known as Blinco, Blinco and Dowden then Gowan Lea Sawmilling Company. Gowan Lea was the second last mill to close in 2008. RW Blinco & Sons was the last of the mills to close - in 2009.
How Jandowae got its Name The first settlers arrived in Jandowae in the 1860s, with the first white child, Henry Bateman,
being born in 1866. Few townships can lay claim to three different spellings of its name. The original name Jindowie was initially named in a petition to the Secretary of Lands in 1862. The name was adopted from the aboriginal word for “waterhole”. Later, a man named Jack or John Dowaie set up a camping area, so north and south bound travellers could rest. This was called the John Dowaie Camp. The second name, Jondowaie, came into being and was used in correspondence by early settlers. When the railway came to town in August 1914, the name was again changed to Jandowae, to save the confusion with the township, Jondaryan.
