Half A Century Of Black Gold Flows At Moonie! A young Queen Elizabeth was shown a model of the new Moonie Oilfields, Australia’s first commercial oilfields, on one of the Australian tours early in her reign. Now, half a century has passed, and the oilfields are still there; they are still producing oil (only 180 barrels per day) and Queen Elizabeth, at 88 years of age, is enjoying the second longest reign in English history. The Moonie Oilfields has produced nearly 25 million barrels of crude oil to date and it is predicted that there is still over 60 million barrels (9.5 billion litres) underground! 1

Santos currently owns and runs the Moonie Oilfields and held an Open Day on Saturday, 7th June. It was well attended by locals and former workers alike. The Moonie State School P&C cooked and served a great morning tea then a barbecue lunch, and after donning safety hats and goggles and being inducted into emergency safety procedures, two large tour groups were taken through the spotless and well-kept facilities by Murray Blair, current oilfields site supervisor. In December 1961, oil exploration in South East Queensland resulted in the discovery of oil at Moonie, leading to the official opening of Australia’s first commercial oilfield in March 1964. It has been 50 years since Moonie’s high flowing oil started the industry’s boom and put Australia on the world map for oil production, and the field is still producing daily. Santos has proudly operated the Moonie Oilfields since 1993. This anniversary is a celebration of the success of the Moonie Oilfields, recognising past and present employees, landholders, stakeholders and community members who have all played a part in it’s ongoing viability. Local Photographers Exhibition In June, Myall Park Botanic Garden hosted the inaugural exhibition of Local Amateur Photographers. The 21 entries were all professionally printed and framed then hung in the Gallery for two weeks. An opening evening was attended by a large number of people keen to see the works. ‘Nepal Morning’ by Alice Thomas was judged first place, and Highly Commended was ‘Lake Baikal, Siberia’ by Kay Denning. Everyone who attended the evening was given a vote to choose the People’s Choice photo. Kate Cover’s ‘Afternoon Delight’ was the winner here. These three photos were auctioned on the night and all were sold. Three of the other entries were also purchased through silent auction. Profits from these sales raised in excess of $250 for the garden.

The Gums Local Attends State Reception Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited Queensland on Saturday 19 April 2014 (Easter Saturday). This was The Duchess of Cambridge’s first official visit to Queensland and The Duke of Cambridge’s second official visit. Their first stop in Queensland was Amberley and then South Bank as part of their tour of Australia and New Zealand. At South Bank Their Royal Highnesses attended the State Reception at the Brisbane Convention Centre where there were 200 guests in attendance and amongst them was Chantahl Stedman of The Gums representing the Queensland Merino Stud Sheepbreeders Association (QMSSA).

Chantahl was nominated by the QMSSA to attend and was initially selected by Government House as an Official Guest. From here she had to write a profile about herself in order to progress to be a Special Guest. The profiles of 200 nominees were scrutinised by the Queensland Premier’s Office until only 20 people remained. Chantahl was one of the selected persons to be a Special Guest at the event. This position enabled her to personally meet and converse with His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge. Chantahl said that “the Duke was very polite and genuinely interested in the state of affairs for farmers of rural Queensland and more specifically the current conditions of

the sheep and wool industry”. She was able to meet some other famous guests in attendance but they were not fortunate enough to personally meet either the Duke or the Duchess.

After the State Reception the Duke and Duchess left the Convention Centre and took a walk through the South Bank Gardens where they were greeted by thousands of adoring fans before being whisked away for their flight back to Sydney. Chantahl Stedman

That's Life - Raising Awareness for Mental Health in Our Rural Communities On Friday 30 May, the Tara and district community attended a free Mental Health Awareness event organised by Tara Men's Group with the support of Western Downs Regional Council. A similar event was also held in Chinchilla and Miles. Local community groups steer-headed a campaign to raise awareness and encourage open discussion about Mental Health in our communities, a common, yet most often silent battle in our rural communities. Guest speaker and well known ABC sports broadcaster Craig Hamilton shared his personal battles with depression and bipolar 1 disorder at the event and he proved to be a remarkably inspiring speaker. prizes was drawn with lots of lucky winners and Civil, QGC and Origin. The event was supported by many local groups and all donations at the event were given to with our local health services on hand to provide Chantahl Stedman BeyondBlue. mini health checks for all attending the event and Apex kindly providing the bar. Hannaford Club Receives Funding for New Fridge The Ergon Energy Community Fund has granted the Hannaford Club funds to purchase a new energy efficient refrigerator. With the addition of this fridge, the Hannaford Club is now able to decommission the highly energy inefficient cold room. This is a valuable addition to club assets, not only in terms of energy and financial savings but will also be a vital utility for the daily running of the club and future fundraising activities. It was well appreciated over the weekend for the canteen of annual Open Gymkhana & Family Fun Day. The Club executive and members would like to extend our thanks to Ergon Energy. Before dinner, an honour board emblazoned with the names of all fifty years of Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers, as well as the life members of the sports club was unveiled by the first executive (from 1964) of Tim Brown, Ron Boland and Marlene Green (widow of Harry Green, the original Treasurer). Marlene then told a few interesting stories about the beginnings of the club. Two new life members were announced, Greg and Trish Baker. Both have been integral in the running of the club for decades. The life memberships were presented by the longest serving executive member Andrew Billsborough. Ten Tips to Nourish Your Skin Often our diet and digestive health can be expressed through the health of our skin. If our skin is looking a little under the weather then it’s likely that our body systems aren’t doing so well either. It is important to take note of what we eat if we want to maintain, clear, nourished and youthful looking skin. Below are ten tips for 5. improving our diet and thus the health of our skin as recommended by Naturopath Megan Douglas. 1.

2.

3.

4.

Fibre: Even healthy eating will benefit us little if our digestive tract is not working efficiently. This is because undigested food 6. can seep from the small intestine into the bloodstream, and the immune system reacts. Omega 3: Omega 3 fats such as fish and 7. flax oils decrease inflammation and create healthy skin cell membranes. They are also great antioxidants, whilst a recent 8. international study found that people who ate diets high in fish and seafood had less skin wrinkling. H2O: Water helps to hydrate and plump up the skin, and flush toxins from the body. We should aim to drink around 1-2 litres of water a day, depending on our body weight, 9. exercise levels and the prevailing climate.

and vegetables assist in making healthy cells. Deeply coloured berries such as blueberries and cherries are loaded with antioxidants which will help your body fight off blemishes. No Sugar: In the case of our skin, the high blood sugar we get from eating sweets and refined flour attaches itself to collagen in our skin cells. This sugar distorts the skin, eventually showing up as wrinkles and also increasing inflammation. Proteins: It is important that we include adequate amounts of protein in our diet as it contains the building blocks to create healthy skin and even repair problem areas. Vitamin C: Vitamin C is not only a necessary part of our diet, but critical for collagen production in the skin.

acid. Hyaluronic acid is what makes cartilage Probiotics: Probiotics contain bacteria that resilient, and keeps our skin resilient as well. not only help our skin look healthy, but also It hydrates our skin, increases its elasticity help us maintain a “healthy gut”. Ask OptomTom Your questions answered by the experts at Eyecare Eyewear

Contact Lenses to Treat Dry Eyes While not appropriate for all patients with ocular surface dryness, some patients will benefit from the wearing of contact lens to improve dry eye symptoms. This treatment option is particularly useful for patients who complain of constant dry gritty eyes particularly after blinking and eye rubbing. The contact lens creates a barrier between the cornea (clear window on the front of the eye) and the top eyelid. This treatment option is works in a similar way to a Band-Aid applied over a skin abrasion. When combined with eye drops, the ocular surface will often heal much faster than if left exposed.

Your Own Blood Can Rejuvenate Your Face with a Vampire Facial This Platelet Rich Plasma treatment has been used to treat elite athlete’s injuries for some time, but has only recently been recognised as an antiageing treatment, and is now in high demand at cosmetic clinics around the world.

hours, so you’ll want to wait a while before showing off your new and improved skin.

So what is a Vampire Facial? In the quest against ageing, some people are turning to the same substance vampires use to stay forever young: blood. Don’t fret, they are not drinking it, but have their own blood harnessed and the plasma reintroduced into the desired areas of their face, neck or hands to revitalise their skin. It is a great treatment for maintaining that fresh look as your skin cells are re-energised, collagen production is boosted and the overall tone and texture of the skin is greatly improved.

The good news is that it is safe and there is no risk of an allergic reaction as one's own cells are used in the skin treatment. Our clinic nurse draws a vial of the patient’s blood which is then spun to separate the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) from the red blood cells. The PRP is then applied topically to the skin during a Dermastamp treatment – a process in which the skin is perforated with near microscopic holes to allow the transdermal delivery of the PRP. The growth factors in the platelets work like “magic” to encourage increased collagen production and new blood flow to the area treated, resulting in younger appearing skin. Results last six months to a year.

This medical grade facial treatment is more penetrating than a regular facial, but the recovery time is quick - clients can notice results in a couple of days. However, as this procedure causes a bit of light bleeding and swelling, the social downtime is approximately forty eight

Uses For Nasal & Sinus Irrigation Products HAYFEVER AND ALLERGIES There are two ways in which washing the nasal tissues can help to improve the symptoms of hayfever and allergy. (a) Rinsing the nose helps to remove pollen and other irritants. It also helps to dilute the chemicals of inflammation produced by the tissues of the nose. Both of these actions assist in reducing the overall symptoms. (b) Cleaning the nose of excess mucus and debris also helps to prepare the nasal tissues to receive medicated nasal sprays like steroid sprays (eg. Beconase, Nasonex, Rhinocort). These sprays are applied onto clean nasal tissue and this has been shown to improve their effectiveness in relieving symptoms. COLDS, FLU AND SINUSITIS These conditions are invariably associated with a blocked nose. The blockage of congestion is caused by tissue swelling in the nasal cavity as a result of a virus invading the tissues and setting up inflammation. Nasal congestion can be relieved by simply washing away the excess mucus that the body produces as part of the inflammatory process. The cleansing also helps to remove the chemicals of inflammation produced by the nose. You may experience sinusitis if the degree of inflammation is severe enough to cause obstruction to the normal flow of mucus. In this event you should wash the nose and sinuses with FLO Sinus Care. Dalby’s impressive architectural style has once again been put on the map thanks to local designers, Martin Building Design, who recently picked up two awards for excellence at the Building Designers Association Queensland regional awards. Martin Building Design was recognised for their designs of a family home renovation in Dalby’s Myall Street and the new industrial Diesel Care building on Loudoun Road. Managing Director Arthur Martin said it was an honour to work on the Myall Street residence, for former owners Matthew and Kirsty Ostwald, which was an iconic local home originally built in the 1920s. “The home had been renovated around the early 1970s and had become very outdated; so the challenge was to retain and enhance the existing external charm while totally redesigning the interior to suit a modern family.”

You might not be cracking out the party poppers and sparkling wine as 1 July rolls around, but a new financial year is a great time to celebrate the successes of the previous 12 months, and plan ahead.

Not everyone loves tax time quite as much as the accountants at BMO Business Centre, but here’s a few tips from BMO Partner Michelle McVeigh on starting the new financial year on the right foot. Activate your 2014 Tax Refund!

P 4531 8090 F 4669 8821

info@activateaccounting.com.au

It’s that time of year again when everyone asks how much will I get in my tax refund, but more importantly, what will I spend it on? It is often the case, that many people have their refund spent before they actually lodge their tax return. So, to eliminate disappointment, it is important to get the maximum tax refund you are entitled to. Do you prepare and lodge your tax return yourself? This is a great way to save a few dollars on an accountant, but are you maximising your refund? The issue is that the Tax Pack can be full of jargon that is hard to decipher. You, the taxpayer, often miss extra deductions simply because the terminology used is not in plain English. Often, by engaging the services of a tax agent, you can return in excess of the cost of the accountant. Activate Accounting strives to maximise your tax refunds through a thorough step by step process. We use plain English so that you know exactly what you can and can’t claim on your tax return, and we suggest extra allowable deductions that you may not have previously known you could claim. If you would like to activate your 2014 Tax Refund with us, then ‘phone the team at Activate Accounting now on 07 4531 8090. On the Land

A Fit Rumen Helps Weak Pasture Pasture putting up stem often lacks the major nutrients cattle and sheep need to sustain high performance. Nutritional supplementation is used to balance animal’s diets and to support property profit margins. A nutritional boot-camp to boost rumen fitness is the key to success. There is a direct link between dry matter intake (DMI) and liveweight gain (LWG). DMI is affected by pasture digestibility and quantity and stocking rate. If we aim to maximise an animal’s DMI, we are likely to maximise LWG. On old, dry pasture, if the best we can do is slow liveweight loss, then our animals are in front. This graph shows how liveweight follows intake. There is a lag in weight change because the rumen buffers small changes in pasture quality. If intake drops, animals eventually start to lose weight. Supplementing animals all year round maximises DMI and therefore restricts weight loss or optimises liveweight gain. Provide vitamins and minerals before pasture grows stem and then include protein as stem starts to grow and produce a flowering head. This strategy ensures supplement intake is low and is controlled. The table below shows how animals gain weight on fresh pasture and lose weight on mature pasture. The steer is a 400 kg British breed, (so quite young) and the wether is a 40 kg merino, so physically is more mature. Protein supplementation as NPN will prevent extreme liveweight loss when pasture quantity is not limiting intake. Starting protein supplementation early is important to limit liveweight loss and to maintain production figures that are linked to fertility, milk production, carcass value and immunity. ANDY & KYLIE’S AGRO ROUNDUP As we head into the cooler months, I wanted • to share with you some tips and watchouts for mixing pesticides in cold water.

Take caution with Striker (oxyflurofen), especially when mixing with glyphosate in a cold water scenario

Cold water can cause unwanted issues when • tank mixing commonly used pesticides, with the most common problems including:

Ensure mixing order is correct – following the correct process is critical to avoiding tank mixing problems and will assist with cold water effects. tank mixing guide (above right) gives a good step-by-step on mixing pesticides

Poor dispersion and product drop out (particularly when using dry flowable formulations) Formation of emulsion issues when adding oils to the spray tank (reverse emulsion)

Ensure water quality is managed correctly - water quality has considerable influence when tank mixing herbicides. Nufarm offers complimentary water testing service – give me a call for more information on this

Cold water issues most commonly arise in winter but can also be created when using granular ammonium sulphate (AMS) in spray tanks due to an endothermic reaction chilling the water

The following tips will help reduce the risk of cold water issues: •

Avoid leaving water in a spray tank or nurse tank over night

Ensure all dry flowable are added to the tank first and dispersed completely before adding more products to the tank – adding products such as oils to the mix prior to dry flowable being completely dispersed can cause the granule to absorb the oil, forming a thick sludge

For further information on cold water management please feel free to give us a she will be out and about on Tuesday’s and call. Andy or Kylie from Tara Rural Supplies, Thursday.
