Meandarra Show 2014 Meandarra Show, which is the main Fundraising event for the Meandarra State School P&C, was held on Saturday, 20th September, at the Meandarra State School grounds. Thankfully, the weather was perfect, and the day was a success. The Motorbike Gymkhana was hotly contested again this year with $2000 prize money up for grabs. It was great to see so many young riders coming out to support the event and competing for some of that prize money. The kids were certainly exhausted by the afternoon after five hours of Kids’ Rides from when the gates opened at 12:00 onwards. Rides included: a Mobile Rock Climbing apparatus, Bungi-Bounce, Hot Rod cars, Mutton Busters, multiple slides and a Merry-Go-Round. Even a few adults tried their hand at climbing the wall, and with a bit of “First to the Top” competition, it certainly made for a few laughs and fun.
Dog Jump, “GDL” Mutton Busters, “Meandarra Aerial” Lolly Drop and a “Domino’s Pizza” Auction of a variety of donated items which included an Aerial Photograph by “Scott Bridle Helicopter and Photography”. There were also Fireworks sponsored by the Allan Cunningham Motel and Pig Races sponsored by Riverina Stockfeeds, Grain Corp, PB Grains, Pioneer and Craig’s Welding & Tyre Service. The night finished off with music by ‘Ausphonic’, the annual hotly contested “Meandarra Transport” Arm Wrestle Competition and a “Farmarco” Kids’ Movie for the Kids.
The Show is always a highlight for the Meandarra area and a great day out for the whole family. The Meandarra State School P&C Assoc. would like to thank our sponsors who make the Show possible. Gold sponsors, other than the ones listed above, include Lowes Petroleum, Western Downs Regional Council, Ashmore Palm Holiday Village, Emerald Group, Meandarra Bulk Haulage, The Show’s Grand Opening was held at 3:00pm NFW, Outback Computer World and Jacaranda and was followed by a Fashion Parade presented Place Motor Inn. by Lilly Pilly Place who travelled all the way from Pittsworth again this year. The afternoon was Rae Logan filled with multiple stall holders, the “Rabo Bank”

Famous Fathers and Daggy Dads The Tara Shire State College P&C held its first Trivia Night on Friday 5th of September – themed “Famous Fathers and Daggy Dads” in honour of father’s day. It truly was a fantastic night with plenty of fun trivia, entertaining games, people dressed in costumes and most importantly money was raised. Many thanks need to go to the Tara Apex club for providing the bar and organising the games between rounds of trivia – they always create a good laugh – I have never before seen 1 anyone get from a position of lying flat on their back to standing tall with a cup of water on their Photos: forehead without spilling a single drop...until that 1. Sam Purcell and Tim Rouso night. Well done Erin Seymour. 2. The Tara Foodworks team Eight trivia teams were registered for the night 3. Sarah Kelly and Luke Wissemann and the costumes ranged from Homer Simpson, 4. Erin Seymour’s amazing talent George and Jane Jetson to Darthvader, the 5. Erin Wissemann and John Fry Godfather and even our own CRT manager. Thank 6. Erin Seymour, Jade Hughes and Jo Beil you to all those who dressed up – it certainly added 7. Dave Gunther to the entertainment. Congratulations to the 2014 8. Matthew and Carissa Hallinan TSSC Trivia Night Winners - “The Force”.

A special thank you to Alex Paterson for running the Auction for the evening and to Joel Batson for providing his services as MC. Overall the P&C were able to raise around $6000 from the night – which will provide the opportunity for P&C to sponsor school swimming lessons for students throughout the Summer season. Learning to swim is such an important part of life and we sincerely thank everyone for their support in enabling the P&C to give every student the opportunity to do so. We were so very fortunate to have had the support from many, many people and businesses within the region. On behalf of the Tara Shire State College P&C I sincerely thank everyone and every business who donated items or cash to the Trivia Night – success of such events is due to the generosity of sponsors and donors. Thank you so very much. We look forward to our next Trivia Night in 2016. The P&C are already planning and organising their events for the remainder of the 2014 School year. These include:

Who Can Beat 64 KGS? The 2015 Tara Pastoral, Agricultural & Horticultural Show Society will once again be conducting the Giant Pumpkin Competition with $100 cash awarded to the heaviest exhibit. Participants should now be preparing their pumpkin patch which should be well drained, spacious and sunny but in a wind protected area. The ground should be turned as early as possible, with manure (cow is best) or some other type of food (i.e. pea straw or similar type legume) added to give the ground nourishment and compost. These pumpkins will grow all Spring and Summer, so make sure to fertilize and water them regularly – don’t overwater as it may rot the fruit. They have a fair bit of growth to do (3.4 to 5.5 kg per day) so your pumpkins need weekly feeding with liquid manure or liquid compost. These giant pumpkins take approximately 5 months to grow – about 70 to 90 days before any fruit appears on the vine and a further 60 days or so for the fruit to reach maturity. Once established, you will need to prune back your vine to one fruit – less competition for the big fruit. A pumpkin is mature when the skin of the pumpkin hardens off and begins to look a bit rough. A giant pumpkin will only last 2 months once cut off the vine, and you should never cut a giant pumpkin off the vine until it is ready for competition unless you think rot or disease may kill the fruit if left on the vine. The record for the heaviest pumpkin at a Tara Show was set in 2012 with a weight of 64 kilograms and was exhibited by Jack and Abbey Conlan. 2015 participants should register and purchase their seeds now which are available from Tara Rural Supplies and Tara Hardware. Businesses/individuals willing to sponsor this competition should contact the steward. GIANT SUNFLOWERS......... Who can grow the tallest sunflower? Which sunflower has the largest flower head? All will be revealed at the 2015 Tara Pastoral, Agricultural & Horticultural Show on Saturday, 7th March. Children, aged 15 years and under, are invited to participate in this inaugural competition. Special seeds are available now from Tara Rural Supplies and Tara Hardware. Participants will be allowed three (3) seeds and need to choose their best specimen for the competition. Each plant needs to be grown and presented in its own container/pot. Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded for the tallest sunflower and the largest flower head. Businesses/individuals willing to sponsor this competition should contact the steward. Beryl Bennett Garden Produce Steward

Community Leslie Keith Billsborough War Photo
All Because of Pen Pals in WW2! All Because of Pen Pals in WWII! This is the tale of two people (Leslie and Joyce) born in September of 1914, in different places in Australia, and their legacy. In Melbourne, during the Second World War, the sister in charge of the orphanage invited the single nurses to take a soldier’s name and to write to them to support them in their efforts fighting for our country. Nurse Robena Joyce Luscombe (known as Joyce) was given the name of Leslie Keith Billsborough. They wrote to each other, eventually met and finally married after the war in March, 1946. Leslie served in the 49th Battalion in Australia and New Guinea where he survived the battle of Sanananda which saw so many other soldiers fall. Les’ family owned a property, “Bethacurraba” in the Goondiwindi district and the newly-weds moved there to help with the farm and with Les’ mother who was not well. In 1958, they won the ballot for a plot of land in Moonie which they settled in 1959 and named “Strathmore”. It is still the home property, now run by one of their sons, Andy, and his wife, Sue.
Recently, at “Strathmore”, the entire family gathered to celebrate and commemorate the lives of Les and Joyce who both would have been 100 years old this September. This was a huge and very successful logistical feat, with every one of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren attending the family reunion, making it an even more special occasion. Every bedroom in the big house and in the cottage was full, with several caravans and campervans parked around the family home. The family came from Airlie Beach, Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, Dubbo, Dunedoo and Sydney, all organising to get time off work for this special event. There are still farmers in the family, as well as policemen, resort managers, consultants, accountants, a hairdresser, a banker, teachers, a journalist, a speech therapist, a grain trader, a lawyer and even a doctor, who will head the burns unit in the new children’s hospital in Brisbane. I wonder what Les and Joyce would think, seeing their family spread out across Australia in so many different fields of work? I’m sure they would be very pleased and proud. I wonder where the Billsborough families will be in the next one hundred years?

Tara Craft Association to Celebrate Forty Years The Tara Craft Association was established in 1974 with 50 members. The inaugural President being Barbara Geisel. A wood kiln was built for firing pottery at the old butcher shop in Sara Street (The building is no longer there.) A china painting kiln was purchased in 1981 and a group of ladies took china painting Tafe classes at Moonie. Other crafts done include spinning, copper shim, basket making, macramé, painting, collage, leather work, and dried flower arranging. Anyone having an interest in a craft shared it with the others in the group at the weekly meetings. All this took place during the ‘70s and ‘80s. Over the years the Tara craft group have been active in the community – participating in the Tara Show Group exhibit every year and donating a trophy to the Craft section – held pottery workshops, for Sixty and better, Fifty and better group – helped with under 8’s days providing clay experience, held craft stalls at local fetes, the Tarcoola Garden Party and 1997, 98, 2000, participated in the Arts Council Italian and Curry functions, Tara Christmas Street Carnival, took part in the Tara Multicultural Festival and Camel Races. We have held RADF funded workshops with outstanding tutors. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE GROUP 1988 - Arts & Crafts Festival at the Civic Centre. Programs were printed by Glenmorgan News and bicentenary medallions were given to prize winners of the various sections. Pottery had become so popular that a night time meet had to be added to the day meet. The kiln was being fired three times a week to keep up with production. 1989 - The club organised a very successful bus
trip to Tambourine Mountain to see the crafts of that area and held a silk dying workshop. 1990 - Dawn Brown became the tutor of the China Painting Group 1992 - The club organised two popular Raffia Hat making work shops. 1993 - China Painters held a 3 day workshop and joined Rotary on a bus trip to the Craft Festival in Toowoomba. 1994 - 20th Anniversary luncheon each one attending received a terracotta key ring stamped 20th Anniversary 1995 – A new gas kiln was purchased. 1999 – the club moved premises to the old Guide building at 10 Day Street. 2004- We celebrated our 30th Anniversary by holding a lunch and sale day at CWA centre. We continue to participate in the community events and in 2005 The Tara Development Association purchased a stunning rooster sculpted by talented potter Jo Gallaway. 2008 – China Painter members Dawn Brown and Elizabeth Kusay were successful winners in the Tara Shire celebrates, Arts and Crafts Competition, These three items are on display in the council rooms.
We still attend school events and enjoy helping the children create, participate in the Blooming Creative Showcase and multicultural Festival. Workshops are still on the agenda, most of all we have fun. We meet each Monday for pottery, currently concentrating on hand built items, and china painters meet monthly. Irma Porter

TSSC Students Shine in ‘Alice’ On the 16th of September students took to the stage in a musical spectacular and wowed audience with their talents in ‘Alice’ the musical. Students from year 4 to 12 committed to the play in both acting roles and crew positions. They performed for the community and with their singing, dancing and acting proving to be quite their forte, they stole many hearts. 20 weeks of hard work by students and staff came to fruition to an astounding round of applause. The talented students of Tara Shire State College are to be congratulated on their amazing effort and hard work. They were extremely well behaved and dedicated to the project and it was clear to see throughout the show. Special thank you to Lorrea Charles and Beryl Bennett for their continued dedication and support. Thank you also to Iain Wallace, Kathy Francis and Linda Steinhordt for their invaluable assistance in the project. We look forward to performing for you again in 2015. Sarah Gossage

Dr Eddie Roos Answers Your Skin Cancer Questions causes skin cells to change and become cancerous. Some of his patients have worked in the sun all their lives and are very tanned but do not have a single skin cancer on them. When asked why, Dr Roos said, “I think it’s their genetic make-up. They are most probably one of those lucky people that will never get skin cancer. Then we see other people who have very little sun exposure but develop many skin cancers.”

He comments, “More and more young people are coming in for their checks, which is really good. I think that the message is getting out there. It also means that precancerous lesions can be picked up early and treated before they develop into a melanoma.”

Dehydration What is Dehydration? How does dehydration occur? Dehydration is the loss of body fluids e.g. urine, vomit, diarrhoea and sweat. How do we stay hydrated? Regular intake of water and electrolytes from foods. • • • • • • •
Approximately 60% of our body weight is fluid Our body required the correct balance of water and electrolytes Electrolytes are mineral salts which derive from our foods (Sodium, Potassium and Chloride) The primary function of sodium and chloride is to retain our fluid and potassium to assist with our nerve and muscle function Every day we lose water and electrolytes from our body (via urine, sweat, breath, bodily secretions) When we are well this process is controlled so the balance is maintained. When we are not well (vomiting, diarrhoea, heavy sweating, not eating) this process is not easy to control and a state of dehydration may occur.
Causes of Dehydration • Vomiting and diarrhoea (loss of body fluids and reduced intake of food and fluids) • Vigorous exercise (loss of sweat) • Travelling (travelling diarrhoea/ long haul flights/ climatic changes) • Hot conditions (loss of sweat) • Working in hot conditions (loss of sweat) • Excessive alcohol (diuretic effect) Other dehydrating conditions caused by lack of food and fluid intake such as: • Morning sickness • Colds and fever • General ill health • Migraines/headaches Signs of Dehydration Warning signs of mild to moderate dehydration: • Decreased urine output (or darker in colour than usual) • Lethargy • Headache • Dry mouth • Loss of skin elasticity (white marks will appear if pinched) • Sunken eyes • Rapid body weight loss of 2% to 7%

Dehydration may not always be evident. For these reasons, young children and the elderly are more at risk of involuntary dehydration. Medical Advice Seek medical advice if diarrhoea persists for more then: • 6 hours for infants under 6 months • 12 hours for children under 3 years • 24 hours for children aged between 3 and 6 years • 48 hours for adults and children over 6 years. Ask OptomTom Your questions answered by the experts at Eyecare Eyewear
Why should I have an eye scan? (OCT and ocular photography) As part of a comprehensive eye examination, I suggest that the majority of my patients consider an OCT (optic coherence tomography) scan. This technology enables the near instantaneous acquisition of photos and extremely high resolution, 3 dimensional scans of the eye. Prior to utilizing this technology optometrists have had to rely on patient symptoms, functional vision measurements and observations with a standard microscope to detect eye disease and record the anatomical features.
There are so many benefits that eye scans offer. They provide a snap shot of one’s eye health enabling accurate comparison of the same eye in the future. This is highly valuable in the screening and management of degenerative eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Recently a study has found a link between a parameter assessed by an OCT (retinal nerve fiber layer thickness) and dementia implying that optometrists may be soon recognized as being able to screen for this condition.
In fact when I studied optometry we were encouraged to draw pictures of important features of the eye. Not being a particularly good artist, I was more than happy to embrace this new technology.
To summarise, eye scans provide me with exponential increase in the amount of information that I can access regarding your eye health. Since including these scans, I feel much more confident in the diagnosis and management of eye disease.

How to change Accountants?
From the Darling Downs to London, Bermuda and beyond
The prospect of changing accountants can be daunting for some clients. However, it is very simple.
Grant Walker was born in Toowoomba and attended Toowoomba State High School. Grant graduated from the University of Southern Queensland with a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) in April 1999 and subsequently completed post graduate studies an achieved membership with the internationally recognized Institute of Chartered Accountants in May 2001.
You have just met with your new prospective accountant and gained the required level of satisfaction with the level of services offered and fees have been negotiated. All that is then required is for you to sign a client authority. The new accountant will then write an ethical letter to your previous accountant. The purposes of the ethical letter is to request if there is any reason (ethical or otherwise) why the new accountant should not take on your work. All relevant working papers, depreciation schedules, write off schedules are then requested to be forwarded to the new accountant. Obviously, before engaging a new accountant, you should ensure all outstanding fees have been paid to your previous accountant.

Crown Rot is the biggest disease risk with Tara Rural Supplies growing wheat on wheat. Crown Rot will be starting to show up in wheat crops as white heads, as the crop dries down. Quite often, there is a pink discolouration at the base of the stem, which is a clear diagnosis of Crown Rot affecting that plant. As part of the PredictaB nematode test, we can also diagnose the severity of Crown Rot infection in the soil. The Crown Rot fungus survives on stubble and roots from an infected crop. This residue can last in the soil for more than three years. Crown Rot also infects barley, oats and pasture grasses. (There is still work going on to figure out if summer grass weeds carry the infection.) Therefore, to manage the infection, you need to rotate out to sorghum, chickpeas, mungbeans etc. for at least three years, and to keep your grass under control. Cultivating your paddock will not reduce the Crown Rot levels, in fact, it spreads the infected stubble throughout the soil and increases the chance of infection. The Argument for Supplements For you and me, taking a supplement is easy. We have a general idea of what we need, can get it in a tablet or liquid form and simply swallow it. We also know that replacing a good balanced diet with a handful of supplements is not a good idea. The idea of a supplement is to complete a whole. Cattle and sheep need supplements too. They can self medicate by selecting a diet mixed with grass, herbage, browse and seed. When we confine them to fenced pasture, we restrict their ability to self medicate. Add to that, we want livestock to produce at a profitable level. Selected breeding has allowed increased growth rates, fertility and milk or wool production. Without a fully balanced diet, with supplemented nutrients, our livestock cannot do what we want them too. There are 3 types of supplement; and 1 decision to make The decision to supplement or not shouldn’t be hard. The base diet of grazing livestock bred for high production is always lacking, and can always be improved. Look at what makes up the majority of their diet, work out what is missing and then choose from 1 of three options. OPTION 1 – MICRO NUTRIENTS FOR A MACRO DIFFERENCE Green forage is a fantastic base for a diet. However, it can be lacking in trace nutrients. Or even worse, it can have nutrients in excess. Most (99%) green forage samples have low copper and cobalt and too much iron. Excess iron binds copper, making it even more deficient. Additionally, the high iron will reduce the availability of other minerals. Half of all green forages sampled are low in sodium, sulphur and zinc; a quarter are low in calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. Less than 1% of green pastures show good mineral levels. If that is you – see option 3. OPTION 2 – PROTEIN BUILDS HEALTHY MICROBES Some green and nearly all dry forage don’t have enough protein to sustain positive animal production. A low protein diet has a two-fold problem. Firstly it starves rumen microbes of their essential food. Reduced rumen activity will reduce animal intake. Secondly, protein deficient pastures are high in fibre which blocks up the rumen. As rumen activity is reduced, the fibre takes longer to be processed. Low animal intake means low animal production.
OPTION 3 – THE SUPPLEMENT MOST PROFESSIONALS USE A well fed and naturally healthy animal will cruise along at its own pace. To add efficiency and extract extra profit, feed additives can make a difference. A common additive is the rumen modifier – or ionophore. Monensin, lasalocid and Flavo suppress growth of inefficient bacteria. Dairy producers and feedlotters use these products as a matter of course – they work on tight margins and know that an efficient rumen keeps animals healthy and cash-flow in the black. Anipro

Members are reminded that membership fees are now payable: $50.00 (full member); $25.00 (social member).Upcoming events: Patron’s Day and Club visits.
Sixteen players joined in the festivities of the fishing competition of the banks of the Tara Lagoon last Saturday and enjoyed two games of fours in Jackpot Joker Bowls.
Members of the Club bid farewell to Hank Koebrugge, who is now ‘riding the sky’, no speeding Hank!. We shall dearly miss your great knowledge, adventures and humour as well as your immense contribution towards the Club. To Heather our thoughts are with you.
The first game was contested amongst the growing clan of "Saturday specialists" with Mick Llewellyn, Karsha, Josh and Isaak defeating Tracy & Lani Mills, Didi and Nicole 14 - 6. The other game was contested between Craig Ensbey, Peter Matthews, Eddie Jones and Pat Heferen against Matthew Prain, Denis Sommerfeld, Lorna Smith and Jo Cowan. Craig's team ended up being victorious, however, Matthew's team had the last laugh when they had the pick of the card for a 1 in 12 shot of picking up the $1527 jackpot but sadly missed, meaning it rises to $1575 this Saturday.
Spring and Summer is HERE and Sunday social bowls is still played, kindly register your names by 1pm to start play at 1.30pm. New players are encouraged to take advantage of this wonderful weather to have a try, the Club has plenty of bowls if you don’t have your own. The gray nomads are great supporters of the Club and are visiting us in droves and having fun on our lovely greens, hopefully we have some converts this year. The Club is open every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays from 5pm onwards and Club rule applies to all. Fridays are BBQ nights prepared by our lovely volunteers, please feel free to drop in for a bite and to socialize as well as to catch-up on the latest. The Club greatly appreciates your patronage. Please note that Jackpot Joker Bowls will revert to the summer starting time of 3pm commencing this Saturday. Well done to the Tara Red Pennant Team of John Smith, Laurie Boardman, Denis Sommerfeld, Matthew Prain and Craig Ensbey who won their tie against North Dalby 2 on margin last Sunday. The morning game of triples saw John, Laurie and Craig get off to a slow start only to come home strongly to take the match 24 - 20. Matthew and Denis had control of the pairs match throughout, claiming a comprehensive 27 - 7 victory. After lunch North Dalby squared the ledger by claiming both the singles and fours by narrow margins, with Craig going down 25 - 20 in the singles, whilst John, Matthew, Laurie and Denis dropped a 2 on the last end to lose the fours by 1 shot.
