Yes, the days of Latte are over; not that we can’t keep drinking our favourite beverage, but if you don’t want to get caught out as ‘dated’, look to the fresh, new neutral, GREY! The rule of thumb in all decorating is that Light brings out and Dark takes away. So, if you have a long narrow room, make a subtle feature of the end of the room by making it two shades lighter than the longer walls. This will make the room feel and look shorter and the far wall closer. Conversely, if you want the room to look longer and larger than it is, paint the long walls lighter and the end or shorter walls a couple of shades darker. For a bright, modern finish, try Grey Pail at 1/4 strength with shiny, oil based white trims, or for a family with dirty little fingers, use Grey Pail at full strength for your trims and doors. Now the fun begins by adding COLOUR! Your soft furnishings are a great place to start, with cushions in aqua blue, navy, bright yellow, red, lavender or powder pink. And for the curtains, try the REVENGEHAMPTONS look of a romantic sheer in white in front of a plain white blockout or semi blockout fabric. I stock a full range of such fabrics in all tones and colours. They look fabulous and are an inexpensive alternative with dramatic results. It was the first run established west of the range in what was to become Queeensland. Two years before, land opened for settlement around the Penal Colony at Moreton Bay, or more precisely, in the area of land bordered by the river on the east and west and in the north the high ridge now called Wickham Terrace...the heart of present day Brisbane.

KICK START FOR A WEALTHIER FUTURE Taking control of your finances can be a daunting task. Many people tend to live from week to week, giving little thought to financial goals or to the future. Others assume that financial planning, tax strategies and wealth accumulation are only for people who own a business. However, did you realise that if you are employed on a salary, you too can make a big difference to your family’s future by taking a few important steps?

Stop putting your superannuation fund ‘out of sight and out of mind’. Take an active interest in your super and get advice on strategies that can help build your nest egg, while giving you the benefit of reducing your tax. Some strategies include adding to your spouse’s super, salary sacrificing some of your pay into super, and making the most of deductible super contributions. Everyone’s situation is different, so talk to your accountant and/or financial planner BMO Partner, David Briese, outlines three tips for for advice on how to get your super working for building wealth and for minimising tax: you.

Create good habits

Get to love tax time!

It’s important to get into the habit of setting financial goals, developing a budget and keeping good records. Ask yourself what you want to achieve. Whether it’s a new dress for the Picnic Races, an overseas’ holiday or a new home to live in for your retirement. Once you know what you are aiming for, you can set realistic timeframes and work out your strategies to get there. Remember, if you develop healthy financial habits, you’ll also be setting a good example for your children. If you don’t know where to start, talk to a respected financial planner.

Be smart with your Super

It’s important to understand how much tax is being deducted from your pay and looking at active ways that you can ensure that you don’t get landed with more to pay at the end of the financial year. Become familiar with the deductions that are allowed for your work, rental properties and other investments. Remember, tax planning is for everyone. Whether you have a business or are employed, you should see your accountant BEFORE 30 June to make sure you’ve done everything you can to get the best result.

2015 is big year for Jandowae RSL sub branch and we have some new items that will continue for now and into the future of Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day. The most the Sub Branch can ask of Jandowae, is to come and be part of the ANZAC day March and services on the 25th April 2015, where we will have a morning service at 5.30am and then the March along High Street and George Street starting from the Bottom Pub at 11.30 march off (start assembling 11.15), and the ceremony at the Memorial Hall, where all are welcome. (tea and coffee at the morning service and tea / coffee/ food at the midday service) We have two local guest speakers, and one Defence Force Speaker from Army Base Oakey. Hopefully we will have our local serving servicemen in uniform, here at the march/ services, they are the future of our Defence Force and RSL, they are also young men we should be proud of serving our country and coming from Jandowae. The Light Horse will be the focus of the day, as the Light Horse Unit was and is a big part of Jandowae history which we should not ever forget and while I'm in the RSL we will not. Our guest speakers will enlighten us more on the Unit in Jandowae. ANZAC day is also for remembering, our serving, our fallen and also the efforts of the past serving members have given to this great land we call Australia. We as a nation are so lucky to live the life style we have, and we should never ever forget that. And appreciate knowing people have given themselves to conflicts /wars, so we may enjoy what we have today. Jandowae is a great place and we should never take it for granted. Let me take this moment to thank the Jandowae Lions Club for their assistance with the catering on the day. Looking forward to seeing everybody at the March and Hall on April 25th 2015, to help remember those who gave themselves for us. Most of all: "Lest We Forget" Rick Hogarth Jandowae RSL Sec.

MEALS ON WHEELS Needed: Volunteer drivers and deliverers for Jandowae Meals on Wheels. Jandowae MOW delivers Monday to Friday within the town area. Meals are picked up from Taralga and distributed to our clients; it generally takes about 30 to 40 minutes of your time, but during that time, you have the opportunity to chat with some amazing people. The roster is currently a 4 week roster, but if we can get more names, you may only need to do it every 5 or 6 weeks. Volunteers do need to fill out an application form; they do have to abide by some rules and they must undergo a Police Check. So, if you are new to town or have lived here for a long time, have some spare time Monday to Friday and are looking for something to do, then please contact Sheila on 4668 5887, or leave your name with Cara at the Pharmacy. ‘Thank you’ to the new recruits who signed up with Jenny and me on Thursday. We will find a spot for you on our roster. To the business houses in town, are any of you able to spare your staff to assist in delivering meals? The Jandowae

Pharmacy has already indicated that one of their staff will deliver meals. The aim of Meals on Wheels is to provide a home delivered, nutritious meal. Referrals can be made through your Doctor, the Hospital or Jandowae Domiciliary Care. If you or your carer feel that, as a Client, you would benefit from this service, please contact Jandowae Meals on Wheels Secretary Sheila 4668 5887 or call in and see Cara at the Jandowae Pharmacy. ‘til next month, Sheila Campbell

POLICE REPORT Stealing Offences – On Friday, 27th February, 2015, offender/s have stolen a 2003 box trailer containing assorted tools. This trailer was parked overnight at the Jimbour Hall as the owner of the trailer was working at that location. On Thursday, 12th March, 2015, offender/s have attended the cemetery situated on Old Rosevale Road, Jandowae and have removed panels from a shed. The offender/s have returned the following evening on Friday, 13th March, 2015 and have stolen the shed framework, leaving behind the concrete slab only. Cameras at the scene have identified a white Toyota utility, a Commodore station wagon and a multi coloured Mazda station wagon as the three vehicles used by the offenders to commit this offence. The offenders also left behind two (2) pairs of gloves that are being tested for DNA by Dalby Forensic Unit. As the offenders were decamping, part of the shed has fallen off their vehicle on the DalbyJandowae Road. Fingerprint examinations have been conducted and prints located. Police are able to identify one of the offenders involved from the CCTV footage as being a resident in the Jandowae township. Jandowae Police and Detectives from Dalby CIB will be making arrests in relation to this matter in due course. Ask OptomTom Your questions answered by the experts at Eyecare Eyewear

Question: Why are you taking photos of the front of my eye? While retinal photography or photos of the back of the eye are now routine in an eye examination, the ability to take photos of the front (anterior) of the eye is also very important. There are numerous sight threatening diseases involving the front of the eye which are initially managed by regular photography. Examples include: pterygium, cataracts and severe eye dryness. Anterior segment photography is also very useful in documenting and determining the success of a treatment for more acute eye conditions such as: eye trauma, conjunctivitis and foreign body removal. Most days I would use a comparison of current and previous photos of a patient’s eye to make a clinical decision. Previously such decisions could only be based on comparisons of written records. To summarize, I endeavor to photograph the front of all my patient’s eyes initially to set a baseline and then as problems arise. I consider this best practice. Got a question for OpTomTom? JANDOWAE KINDY ‘KAPERS’

The Kindy AGM was held at 7pm at the Cultural Centre on Monday, 16th March. As I am writing this the day before the AGM, I hope we have been successful in filling all positions. I would like to extend thanks to Darryl Donald for once again chairing the AGM. I will let you know who the incoming Committee is in the next newsletter and give a summary of our year. It is with great sadness that last year was my last year on the Kindy Committee after 8 successive years.

Group A - Nursery Rhyme Time with our Kindy Grandparents was last Monday, 16th March. What an amazing turn out, with 25 Grandparents walking through the Kindy gates ready to share in the activities with their special little people. Our children were bursting with excitement leading up to this day, preparing their songs to sing and organising costumes with their families at home. Incy Wincy Spider biscuits, Baa Baa Sponge Sheep paintings, Humpty Puzzles were enjoyed by all. We look forward to hearing the children’s reflections on this day over the week to come. Sincere ‘thank you’ to all of you for attending. It was lovely to see some returning faces as well as meeting some new Grandparents in 2015.

Please mark your calendars for the LAC/Kindy Quiz Night to be held on the 2nd May at the Memorial Hall. It is always a fantastic night out. More details will be available as the date draws closer.

A few weeks ago, we received a visit from a beautiful pony named Zanda. All the children looked forward to patting him and watching him get washed. We are really looking forward to hosting Grandparents’ Day next week. The children are very proud of what they achieve at Kindy and will be thrilled to show it off!

Group B - The children have had a great time engaging with ‘Hairy Maclary’ stories. We have acted out the stories, using puppets and props aiding in the children’s comprehension of the plot, language and illustrations. The children have also been using their creativity and initiative to draw characters from the stories.

Kindy News

We still have positions available at Kindy for Pre-prep and three year olds. The Kindergarten has a country casual policy where children from outlying areas can attend Kindy on a daily basis rather than have to attend the full 15 hour program; however, certain criteria have to be met. The Committee realizes that it is not feasible or even possible for the children from outlying areas to attend the 15 hour program. Please put your child on the waiting list if you have not already done so. Children who turn three during the year will be offered a place as they turn three. Should you have any questions or wish to enrol your child, the teachers can be contacted via phone 0746 685665 or email jandowaekindy@bigpond.com ..

We are always grateful of any donations to the Kindy and we are currently looking for empty soft drink bottles for Easter craft. If you are able Have a safe and happy Easter. to donate any, please just drop them off to the Maree Taylor, President Kindy.

ON THE LAND

It is that time of year when people are looking at applying fertiliser for the coming winter crop that will be planted over the coming 3-4 months. When considering how much and what to apply, soil tests can be used in conjunction with cropping, yield history and also previous fertiliser application to provide a useful guide in ensuring the next crop is a profitable one. Soil tests are generally carried out in February to April for winter crops to allow sufficient time for application in the months leading up to winter crop planting. For summer crops, May to July is a good time. A variety of tests can be done to the soil to give an indication of the levels of a wide range of nutrients from varying depths throughout the soil profile. Straight Nitrogen (N) tests can be done if the levels of other macro and micro nutrients have been tested within 3-5 years. However, if they haven’t, it is a good idea to ensure you have adequate levels of other nutrients such as Phosphorus, Potassium, Sulphur and Zinc. When testing for different nutrients, different sampling depths are usually tested as some nutrients move throughout the soil profile with water movement and others do not.

Potassium, do not move throughout the soil profile and therefore, once overall levels in your soil type are known, they really only need to be monitored on the surface and sub surface where they are applied. Common depths for testing of these nutrients are 0-10cm and 10-30cm. Testing these depths will show if stratification is occurring. The main stratification issues facing zero till are that nutrient concentration of P and K will be greater near the surface in the 0-10cm and not in the 10-30cm zone, as plants have the opportunity to extract more than can be applied.

For example, N moves with the moisture front through the profile and therefore should be tested in at least three depths to indicate where bulges of nitrogen may be. If there are bulges at depth (60-90cm), then this N may not be available to the next crop until late in Tests can also be carried out on some nutrients the crop’s growing period and should therefore that indicate levels that may be tied up in the be disregarded when calculating how much to soil nutrient pool. apply. Testing other nutrients lower in the profile Other nutrients, such as Phosphorus and (30-120cm) will also indicate if the soil has any

structural issues. High levels of nutrients such as Chloride, Sodium and Magnesium can limit crop root growth down through the profile and stop the plant from utilising moisture and nutrient that may be stored down deep. Testing can also be helpful in creating management zones from yield maps or EM Surveys to begin managing areas in the field based on similar levels of fertility. At the end of the day, soil sampling is a useful tool to accompany good fertiliser and yield records to give a complete picture of your soil’s fertility and hopefully, allows you to set a crop or pasture up to make the most of the rain that might fall and turn as many millimetres into dollars as possible! CONSIDER USING STARTER FERTILISER TO GET YOUR CROPS BOUNCING OUT OF THE GROUND fertiliser rate that delivers P to every seed in the row. On the Western Downs, minimum starter fertiliser rates for winter crops have typically been 30kg/ha (approx. 6kgP/ha). However, looking at the table, it shows that there would be large gaps between granules at this low rate, so every plant would not be tapped into starter P. Therefore, should we consider moving our Starter phosphorus helps bounce crops out of starter P rates higher? I will certainly be doing the ground with improved root, shoot and tiller some more fertiliser trials on our farm this year growth. If the crop is set back in the early stages and will let you know the outcome. of growth, quite often it cannot recover and yield penalties will occur. The table below shows the Our alkaline soils tend to tie up zinc availability, number of granules per m of row. As P cannot therefore, having a ready supply close to the move very far in the soil, you need to select a seed can improve uptake by the growing plant. From my soil testing results over the last few years, it has become apparent that the vast majority of our soils on the Western Downs are deficient in both P and Zn. These nutrients are essential for plant growth, and if they are limited, they can affect early crop growth and final yields.

Be careful when choosing a Zn based starter fertiliser as some products DO NOT have Zn in every granule; they might only have one Zn granule for every 100 granules of MAP, so you can see that only a few plants along the row will have access to this Zn. Using a product like Granulock Z, which has the Zn in EVERY granule of starter fertiliser, means that all the plants can tap into this supply. Kylie Fourie Agronomist Tara Rural Supplies
