Why do I need a Blue light filter on my spectacle lenses? One of the more recent exciting advancements in spectacle lens has been the application of selective photo-protective coatings. These reduce the risk of the development of AMD (age related macular degeneration) and cataracts. By selectively blocking Blue-Violet light and UV to the level equivalent to SPF 25 sunscreen, such coatings have been shown to slow retinal cell death by up to 25% (Retinal Pigment Epithelium).

Community Yeates Bros & Co Yeates Bros & Co, who had a long association with Dalby and District, was founded in Toowoomba. It was formed by two brothers, Herbert and Kenneth Yeates, in 1895 after the family had disposed of their pastoral interests at Adavale. They opened the branch in Dalby in 1912 and their brother, Milo, was the manager of the branch and he soon established another branch at Bell where he was to reside until his untimely death from influenza on 27 May, 1919. The business was responsible for the selling and buying of properties from thousands of acres of pastoral and agricultural land to town blocks of a few perches. These included freehold and leasehold land statewide, as well as interstate, to and for their many clients. In fact, many well-known properties in the district had either been sold by or Yeates Bros were involved in the purchase of the property. They conducted regular auctions of sheep, cattle, horses and pigs locally, as well as consigning stock by train to the other centres for market. They would take delivery of the stock and inspect and manage them until they were sold or delivered for their clients. In 1929, they were to establish a dealership with H V McKay-Massey Harris (Qld) Pty Ltd that manufactured tractors and agricultural implements and still later, they were to establish a Travel Agency under Yeates Bros & Co. One of the members of the company toured throughout New Zealand in 1910 distributing literature and advertising Queensland and the Downs, in particular, promoting the rich agricultural and pastoral land of this area. They had offices at the Sydney Show on several occasions. Yeates Bros commenced issuing a quarterly magazine illustrating the unbounded resources of the Darling Downs country. It was known as “Yeates’ Quarterly Review” and included a classified list of properties for sale
The Yeates Bros & Co storefront. Sketch by Jean Town as well as other helpful information for the grazier. They would submit reports of property and stock sales to the papers and magazine, especially “The Sydney Stock and Station Journal”. It was a regular feature, in the latter, of reporting on the conditions of the various stock routes in and around the Darling Downs and Southern Queensland. Mr. Herbert Yeates served on the Toowoomba City Council and represented Toowoomba in the Legislative Assembly. It was claimed that he was the most rail-travelled member in the Commonwealth because of his special interest in Queensland rail and he was always trying to improve the service in country areas. He was to die in Brisbane on 24 December, 1945.
His untimely death occurred whilst visiting Brisbane in July, 1939. His son, Maitland, was working for the family business. No doubt, from humble beginnings of premises situated near the railway station and that was formerly occupied by the Government Agent for Jimbour in 1912, to an established office in the main street, Yeates Bros & Co. continued to serve the district until 1949 when the company was purchased by A.M. L. & F Co. Ltd with their associate company, McPhie and Co. Pty. Ltd. of Toowoomba, Oakey, Dalby, Bell and Pittsworth. All members of the existing staff were to then come under the direct supervision of Hector McPhie, of McPhie & Co. Jean Town, DFHS Inc.
Mr. Kenneth Yeates was a champion rough-rider in his younger days in the Charleville district.

Precision Agriculture Over the last 10 years or so, there has been a lot of talk about precision agriculture (PA) and its many facets, however, on the Darling Downs, there has been very limited uptake by growers on a large scale. Growers have been hesitant to dive in and utilise any of the PA tools as they struggle to see the cost benefit. This is understandable, as when compared to some bigger growers in our neighbouring southern states, our farms are smaller, a lot of areas have limited soil type variability and there has also been a lack of harvesting equipment with yield monitoring capabilities. A lot of this has continued to change and develop over the years and everyone has had a chance to see the best ways to utilise many of the PA tools. At Landmark Dalby, we believe a lot of this technology has come a long way and with all aspects of technology in the world developing in leaps and bounds, the PA space is no different. The cost of collecting, processing and interpreting information has fallen with the continued

development of software and data collecting devices. Ten years ago, only very few harvesters and cotton pickers had yield monitors, but now they are standard in just about every machine. This data alone, once cleaned up, can tell a million stories about a crop and why areas may be better than others with very little if any cost.
