Queensland Premier Campbell Newman last month launched a global sorghum research program at Pirrinuan on the Western Downs aimed at improving sorghum productivity under drought conditions. Scientists from the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) will work with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) to address problems common to sorghum growers in many of the world’s low-rainfall regions. Underpinning the research program is a $4 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The research program will involve local growers, making land available for trial plots and working closely with the research teams. councillor spotlight Easter has come and gone very quickly and there were many events and activities to do across our region. I can’t believe I still hear people say “there is nothing to do”. Most weekends I have to decide which event or activity I will attend. If you find yourself bored just slip down to your local library as they have many things on the go and they don’t just involve reading a book. Libraries have changed because our world has changed and their vision statement ‘Imagine – Connect – Experience’ sums up what our libraries are all about. Youth Week is also coming up fast and this year it is being held during the Easter school holidays so all young people can attend. Keep an eye out for what is on in your area. This year we have also welcomed many new citizens to our area with monthly Citizenship Ceremonies. The Western Downs region is very proud to open its arms and welcome you and your families as part of our community. Chinchilla has just had its very popular ‘One Long Table’ event to showcase new

multicultural residents while both Tara and Dalby will have their multicultural festivals later in the year. The latest round of the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) had many good quality applications which continue to show that we have many very creative and talented residents. Don’t forget to put your workshops and events on the Council event calendar. Have you received your emergency pack? Many residents have again had to deal with floodwaters. To help residents prepare for all natural disasters, council has mailed out an emergency pack consisting of a waterproof document wallet, information sheets, and a fridge magnet with relevant contact numbers. Finally, I would like to remind all members of local community groups and organisations to find out about Council’s new community grants program. If you would like to learn more about the community grants process and the ‘ins and outs’ of Council’s new

This month Western Downs Regional Council will be celebrating National Youth Week by hosting a number of events throughout the region to provide fun activities for young people. I encourage young people to gather their friends and go along to events in their town and enjoy a great day out. You will be spoilt for choice as there are many activities to get involved in and plenty of entertainment happening over the week. Once again the region’s recent flood event and its impact on our community captured the attention of the State Government and so too has Council’s push for a Category C declaration. Let’s hope some good news is round the corner for our worst affected residents and businesses. A highlight over the past month was a visit to the region by Premier Campbell Newman, Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney and several ministers. Dalby’s standing as one of the leading saleyards in Queensland was realised when Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestries The Hon. Dr John McVeigh turned the first sod on the $12.6 million redevelopment of the Dalby Saleyards complex. Meanwhile, the Premier and Minister McVeigh have reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to the state’s grain industry, officially launching a new sorghum research program set to commence in the region. In more good news, the Deputy Premier has reviewed the Council’s long-awaited Western Downs Regional Planning Scheme. Following advice of the State Government, Council’s Planning Section is busy making the required changes to the regional plan before it can be made available for public feedback. I was very proud recently to attend the Emergency Medal Award presentations to Western Downs residents. These awards acknowledge the contribution some of our finest volunteers have made to assist our communities during flood and fire emergencies. On behalf of Council I sincerely congratulate our residents on their medals and commend them on their service to the community. Finally, I must say a big thank you to those people who attended the Mayoral Prayer Breakfast held in Chinchilla recently, as your support helped raise vital funds to support the local school chaplaincy services.
