Western Mennonite School Course Title: Woodshop Instructors: Rich Martin/Laura Lehman Grade Level: 9-12 Course Description: This is an introductory course to provide knowledge for entry level woodworking. Instruction includes safety on all equipment, machine operations, and maintenance of equipment. Proper use of hand & power tools. By creating various projects students will experience all aspects of the woodshop. They will be given instruction in the safe operation of woodworking machines & tools, such as the table saw, surface planer, jointer, scroll saw, band saw, power sander, lathe and drill press. Students will learn about basic craft construction, available woods, fasteners and finishes. (Second Semester is a continuation with additional skills in furniture making and wood finishing treatments) Goals and Objectives: To acquire knowledge and experience in how to operate power/manual woodworking equipment. And to aquire Problem solving skills, plan preparation experience and knowledge of repairing while creating with wood. Students will also gain knowledge on EQUIPMENT SAFETY for the equipment listed above in course description Course Content: Students will go through safety training at the start of the semester and learn the right way to use all the equipment. Students will be given small projects by the teacher to access where their woodworking level is. Then students will be allowed to choose their own projects,increasing the difficulity as their skill level increases. Materials: Provided by school:
All woods, glue and equipment used in assigned projects
Provided by student: Any materials and plans that I don’t have that students want for alternative projects, upon my approval. Grading: Students receive participation points for their daily work, attendance, behavior and clean-up. Projects are not graded by difficulty or success of end product but by experience gained throughout the semester. Specific Class Rules / Behavior Expectations: There will be no horseplay while in the woodshop!! If such behavior is encountered points will be taken away and/or the student will be removed from class. If this is a persistanct problem being kicked out of the class will be an option. This is a safety issue with all the power equipment involved.
