Course Syllabus

Course Title: Career Education Instructor: Mrs. S. Stinson Course Description:

Semester I, 2012; 0.5 Credit Grade Level: 12

This one-half credit course will enable students to meet the criteria of the career-related learning standards which are required for Western Mennonite School’s high school diploma, and by the state of Oregon in the past. These are “fundamental skills essential for success in employment, college, family, and community life” (ODE, Career-Related Learning Standards, p. 31A). Discussions of personal and financial management, problem solving, communication, teamwork, employment foundations and career development will be presented in a Christian perspective. Since the Bible is rich in instruction about how to work and manage our talents and resources, it will be used as a “handbook” in this course. A job shadow experience and a service opportunity will also be completed. Goals and Objectives: Students will be given opportunities to learn to: o exhibit appropriate work ethic and behaviors in school, community, and/or workplace. o apply decision-making and problem-solving techniques in school, community, and/or workplace. o demonstrate effective and appropriate communication skills to give and receive information in school, community, and/or workplace through oral presentations and various forms of written communication. o demonstrate effective teamwork in school, community, and/or workplace. o demonstrate career development skills in planning for post-high school experiences. For all other absences, please find out from a fellow student what was missed and hand it in upon return. Tests: If you miss a test due to an absence, you must take the test on the first day back at school. Failure to schedule the test or unreasonable postponement will result in a loss of 10% per day. These classroom rules reinforce excellent workplace habits. Start practicing now! 1. Come to class prepared with all necessary materials and be ready to begin work immediately. At the bell, you should be ready to learn. A ‘tardy’ will be given for those who need to return to their lockers for forgotten materials. 2. Since your behavior affects your learning and the learning of others, you are expected to conduct yourself accordingly. This includes respect for the feelings, ideas, and property of others (tables, chairs, furniture included). 3. Cell phones must be TURNED OFF and placed in a backpack or purse before you enter the classroom. Otherwise, I will keep your cell phone for the day and it may be picked up after 7th period (1st offense). 4. No food or drimks are allowed in Room 22. Water bottles only. 5. “Technology Use Policy” outlined in the Parent/Student Handbook is enforced. 6. Leave the room neat and tidy. This means taking all belongings and papers with you, and sliding your chairs in when you are dismissed. 7. Ten per cent per day will be deducted for late work. 8. If you are having problems of any kind in the class, I welcome the opportunity for us to meet one-on-one outside of class time. I want you to be successful in Career Education!
