Paul Schultz | School Administrator I would like to thank all of our faithful friends that have had a part in influencing the lives of our students this past year. The help has come in many different forms. Some have given time, some have given ideas, and some have given money. All three are vitally important.
We love hearing the good stories of lives being impacted and changed, but we also need to hear from you about areas where we can improve. As the Proverb goes, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” We need you to sharpen us. Just as our physics class was challenged to build a structurally sound, weight bearing bridge for their final project, this school was founded on very similar objectives. Throughout the history of Western every board member, administrator, teacher, staff person, parent, student, and community member has stepped in as the support beams and cross sections that has made Western an amazing school. Entering my second year as School Administrator I feel like we have strengthened the structure that is going to
enable us to stand firm and increase our capacity to make life changing impact in our community. God has been incredibly faithful to this school in many ways over the years. Last year we met our budget, and this summer we have hired a very gifted group of teachers and staff both young and old. We have been proactive in making Western a safe and welcoming environment, and we are ready for the sounds and life that our students will bring the first day of school. I rarely find myself without words, but it is hard for me to fully express how excited and hopeful I am for this school year. I hope you join me as I anticipate what God has in store for Western, and above all, please keep us in your prayers as we carry on the extremely important job of training the next generation of young people. There is no greater mission on earth! Mark 12:29b-31 reads, “ ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.’ ” If our children leave WMS with these two commands firmly planted in their hearts then we have succeeded in our mission.
Robby Gilliam | Campus Pastor & Dean of Students Our spiritual life theme at Western Mennonite School this year was a simple one, yet profound on many levels. The theme “Believe. Belong. Become.” was chosen by our student leaders after much prayer and discussion. Local pastors joined with me in speaking on this theme that challenged our students to Believe in a God that can supply all your needs which leads you to Belong to something bigger than yourself so that you can Become all that Christ has called you to be.
It never ceases to amaze me how students from all walks of life can descend onto Western’s campus each year with a common goal. Each student is seeking to grow. Growth may look different for each student, but growing is sometimes the easy part. Growth is a natural part of life. Growth and change is something that comes our way and we are forced to adapt. Change can be good and change can be bad. This year students were challenged to follow after the truth in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
They were also challenged to change positively with their eyes fixed on Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). It is our privilege and honor as faculty and staff to impact students with the love of Christ each and every day. I loved our theme this year because it challenged all of us to look past today and look toward what God sees in us. To see the lives we can touch as we seek to be more like Him. We are not called to judge each other, but to love each other. The departing words I left our students with on the last chapel of the year can be found in two verses spoken by Jesus. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35. God has shown himself faithful this school year and I am overjoyed with anticipation as we embark on another year. Western Mennonite School is a community of support, love, and discipleship. I see this evident everywhere I go. Our students are truly blessed to be a part of such a community and I am honored to partner with each of you in shaping these students. By our love they will truly know we are His disciples. Summer 2013 3

2012-2013 Highl OSAA Sportsmanship Award The OSAA presented Western with their ‘12-’13 Sportsmanship Award. The award included a $1,000 check and a banner for our gym. Thank you to all our students, athletes, parents, and community for representing the values of Western so well!
Academic All Star Christy Rausch ’13 was honored as an Academic All Star along with 40 other high school seniors in the Mid-Valley. Every year the Statesman Journal seeks to recognize students for their academic achievements and commitment to community service. Christy has a GPA of 4.0 and was involved in yearbook, the National Honor Society, and the WMS Book Club. She has played volleyball, basketball, and softball at Western while being heavily involved in her community. Christy is a Sunday school leader at her church, volunteers at Hope Pregnancy Clinic, and provides childcare for Recovery Group Mission Trip to East Asia. The all-star students were asked to write an essay on whether social media could improve their community. The following is Christy’s essay submission. “Social media has been successful in its goal to share information and bring people together. Most of us are “friends” with people online who, in real life, we may only know
by reputation. It is amazing how much can be learned about a person without ever having a conversation with them. This is often viewed as a bad thing, because relationships can become superficial and one sided, but there are advantages as well. Social media should not be viewed as a replacement of face-to-face conversations, but instead a way to get to know even more people than you could otherwise. Recently, I was on Facebook and I read some posts from a girl that I saw every day, but only knew by reputation. I had thought poorly of her because of her actions, but when I read about the hard things going on in her life, I was able to sympathize with her. I realized at that moment that I was the one in the wrong, because I had no right judging someone I didn’t even know. Because I learned more about her, I was able to exchange my judgmental attitude for compassion. It made me thankful for what I have been given and aware of how I can give back to others. Social media allows us to learn about others, and therefore understand them. If we use these tools to break down barriers and encourage others, our communities will come together and thrive.”

Moriah Mansour ’14 Student Essay By: Moriah Mansour ’14 Why I Dance I hear the music resonate within the walls of the theater. The voices of the crowd cease and I listen intently for my cue to go on. I hear the counts of the music: five, six, seven, eight. A new phrase starts. The momentary butterflies I have in my stomach vanish as I step out of the wings under the spotlight. Eyes peer, but to me there is no one there. I am engulfed in the music, lost in the dance and the character I have molded myself to be. I dance just as I breathe, not simply because I chose to, but because it is essential for my existence. This is why I dance. When my parents first allowed me to start ballet ten years ago, they never dreamed it would take me where I am today. Not only has it helped shape me as the person I am now, but it has also opened up many incredible opportunities for me. There are definitely many things I have learned from being a dancer, beyond the technical aspect of dancing. I know without the life lessons I have learned in the dance
studio, I would not be the person I am today. Dance not only requires flexibility, musicality, and good technique, but it also requires discipline. It requires one hundred percent dedication and determination in order to really be able to excel in it. Through the years I have spent dancing I have learned to try my best in all I do and never give up when things prove to be a challenge. Perseverance and commitment to what I do in the dance studio are qualities I have been able to take with me and apply to the life experiences I face outside of the studio. Dance is a part of me, and it is continually allowing me to discover more of who I truly am. I am blessed to be given the rewards as well as the challenges I have had as a dancer, because I can see how both have caused me to become a more genuine, passionate dancer. I dance for the love of dance, for the joy of moving, and for the ability to emote what words cannot say.
Crystal Apple Nomination Every year, the Salem Keizer Education Foundation uses the Crystal Apple Awards to recognize excellence in education by honoring those making a significant impact in the lives of children. Nominees typically include teachers, counselors, instructional assistants, office managers and administrators who are making a difference in students’ lives. Western’s very own, Susan Stinson ’77, was one out of forty-four local educators that were nominated for the award this year. Western is grateful to have such great educators like Susan who pour their time, energy, and resources into their classes. Susan teaches Marketing and Business classes as well as English.

2012-2013 Highlights 41st Annual Benefit Auction
The 41 years of fine-tuning Western Mennonite School’s Annual Benefit Auction makes for an exciting event to look forward to every year. This year was no exception! Efforts to provide quality items began seven months in advance, and regular auction meetings began in January. Charlene Schultz ’80, Alumni Coordinator, organized all the class gifts and knew that this was going to be a special year. Looking back she says, “I was amazed at how many great items were being donated and the amount of money the alumni classes were sending in. I started praying that all those great items would have a buyer!” With quality items in place, careful planning from the Auction Committee, and loads of help from volunteers, the stage was set for the 41st Annual Auction to be another success. Over 1,000 people came through the doors of the Americraft building on May 4. Each one played a special role in making this a record breaking year. A grand total of $150,000 was raised in support of Western Mennonite School’s mission to equip students for lives of faith and learning! Both the live and silent auction had its biggest year ever. The generosity of those present at the auction was incredible to witness. The school board contributed a $9,000 matching gift to help raise funds for student grants, and the response from bidders was overwhelming. As bid numbers began to rise at the $2,000 level an air of excitement took over the Auction block. Development Coordinator, Caleb Ivanitsky ’06, was watching from the head table and says, “I was nearly moved to tears as hand after hand went
continued...
up to so freely give to our families in need.” In just ten minutes the crowd well exceeded the board’s match and committed $13,000 to make the grand total raised for student aid $22,000! In conclusion, the following are some thoughts from School Administrator Paul Schultz. “As the auctioneer for the event I am privileged to have the unique opportunity to see all of the fun and competitive giving that goes on. Yes, I said competitive giving. I don’t look at it as bidding opportunities, but rather the auction creates an environment for giving opportunities. I always say, ‘Until you have paid more than an item is worth you haven’t given any money.’ It was so rewarding to see an item bring $2,000 more than the purchase price, or to see the Lincoln Store coffees bring over $2,500. There were also many other items that people donated and purchased all in the spirit of blessing Western Mennonite School. There are so many people I want to thank that I don’t even know where to start. Please know that I appreciate what each one of you has done to make the auction a great success! I feel it is appropriate to say, ‘Praise the Lord’ and thank Him for blessing the auction, and as I always say, ‘Thanks for what you do!’”

Campus Safety The WMS Safety Committee meets once a month to discuss and strategically stay ahead of any safety concerns that involve students, staff, and the campus. The committee is made up of representatives from the facilities department, faculty, administration, and dorm. They are responsible to ensure that Western is current with state health and safety codes, provide trainings for faculty and staff, evaluate and modify safety and security procedures. Every fall faculty and staff receive AED (Automated External Defibrillator), Blood Born Pathogen, and First Aid training. Howard McBride, staff member at Western and volunteer paramedic, hosts a CPR training every year. With growing concern over the number of school shootings that have occurred, faculty and staff were encouraged to attend an “Active Shooter Response” training in January. A similar training was then presented to all faculty and staff during an inservice day. Based on these trainings and in depth research the Safety Committee updated the Lock Down procedures. Representatives also gave training from Liberty House on sexual predator awareness. The Safety Committee stressed the importance of awareness and preparedness as potential safety concerns were
evaluated. Along with the previously mentioned trainings, other steps have been taken to improve campus safety. Gates at both entrances to the campus have been installed to manage who is allowed on campus, and guests are required to check in at the office to receive a visitors ID. Fire drill procedures have also been modified to integrate more efficient ways of accounting for all students’ safety and providing substitute teachers with clear disaster response and preparedness policies. “As parents we are always concerned with the safety of our children. With so many tragedies in our country over the last year, the issue of safety is paramount as parents evaluate where their children attend school, where they are spending free time, and who they are hanging out with. It is never enjoyable thinking through worst case scenarios, but I feel confident in the training and strategic planning that we have orchestrated, and feel that our teachers and staff are better for it. Students, parents, and community should continue to feel safe whenever on this beautiful campus.” Paul Schultz School Administrator

Class of 1963 Celebrates 50 Years
By: Mim Zook ’63 Twenty-six classmates gathered for a reunion at Lincoln City, Oregon, July 11-13. Many had not seen one another for 50 years. In some cases it took time (and a hint or two) to identify one another. The group spent much of the time catching up with each other’s lives, renewing old friendships, and reminiscing experiences from the days at Western. One segment of the program provided opportunity for classmates to share hobbies and things that gave them joy. The presentations ranged from sewing/crafts, balloon art, and floral art to photos of travel and grandchildren. Archie and Jean (Kropf) Clay demonstrated spectacular kite flying. A total of 39 classmates and spouses attended all or most of the reunion. The reunion concluded with a Western campus tour and a meal shared with representatives from classes 1962 and 1964, along with several faculty from the era.

WMS Alumni Receive Golden Apple Award After graduating from Western Mennonite in 2002, Darren McCoy went on to attend Willamette University and the University of Oregon to receive his Masters of Music Education in 2008. Fresh out of college he was hired at Oak Harbor High School, Washington. Four years later, he was the recipient of the Golden Apple Award. At the presentation it was highlighted that, “Under Darren’s leadership, the number of students participating in choir has grown dramatically. At concerts, seats are filled to capacity. Darren’s classes provide students with exceptional experiences that nurture not only musical talent but self-confidence and self-esteem.” An article in a local paper, the Whidbey News-Times, quoted Darren as saying, “My goal is that they are going to be able to navigate the musical world, even after they graduate.” He also expressed what drives his desire to teach music saying, “I love teaching music because when you teach a student to identify what makes music beautiful and worthy, they learn to identify what makes them beautiful and worthy.” Western wishes 12 In Touch

ALUMNI MESSAGE BOARD “I would just like to say Hello (from California) to everyone I was fortunate enough to have spent time with during the time of my school years. I have nothing but great memories of you all!” -Roy Perez ’83 “I am from the class of ‘64 and I am trying to locate a textbook used in Marcus Lind’s Bible Class. I can’t recall the title or author, but would love to get hold of a copy!” (contact WMS if you have any applicable information) -Miriam Hess ’64
“Hi, I was notified by a classmate that I was on a list of lost alumni. So the lost has been found, tho I never felt lost. I have been working in China for most of the last 20 years; first in Hong Kong with Eastern Mennonite Missions, then with China Education Exchange, [now Mennonite Partners in China], and the last 8 years in Shenzhen with Quality Schools International. This is my last year here as I have accepted a transfer to Kosice, Slovakia. It will be a big change but I am excited about seeing another part of the world.” -Barbara Kauffman ’68
