Paul Schultz ’80 | Head of School We have had much to celebrate and be grateful for as we reflect on the last school year. First, it is important to say “Praise the Lord” for allowing us to meet budget for two years in a row! Many donors have given to help us complete several projects. In the last In Touch we noted a long list of projects that have been completed over the last year and a half. Since then we have received approval to begin construction on the administration building entrance improvement! Things will look different for the first day of school, so please come and see the changes. Preliminary discussions have also started for possible gym renovations. I am anxious to see what God has in store for us. All of these things would not be possible without the outstanding people that God has placed around

me. We have a wonderful Board of Directors and a strong Foundation Board that are very committed to WMS. They have been an integral part of setting vision and direction in the strategic planning process. We are blessed by teachers and staff that give so much to our students. While they are committed to ensuring a strong academic environment they are even more committed to nurturing them spiritually. We are once again very pleased with the new hires that God has led us to. Their evident obedience to follow God’s calling in their lives to serve and impact young men and women for Christ is incredibly encouraging to me. While I truly value seeing students learn and work towards reaching their academic goals, it is also fulfilling to see them participate in all of the extra-curricular activities that Western Mennonite offers. Above all, I am thankful for the spiritual growth that I have seen in our student body this year. If we educate them but fail to teach them about Christ, then

we have failed. I am blessed when I see Jim Harper (’14-’15 Campus Pastor) eating lunch with students and discussing what baptism means. These conversations come from all of our faculty and staff. Recently I had a parent share how impacting miniterm was for their child. They didn’t share about all of the fun activities on the trip, but rather the great spiritual growth that happened because of the leader’s willingness to listen, talk and encourage them to follow Christ in all that they do. This confirms to me that we are in fact fulfilling the mission of our school. I ask you to pray that we never be satisfied with where we are, but that we would continue to point the next generation to Jesus only! Gratefully,

Paul Schultz Head of School

Zig Derochowski | Principal As I watched our seniors graduate on June 14th, I noted that 28 of our 31 graduates had already committed to a college for next year. This is typical of our graduating classes and as Academic Excellence is one of our five key distinctives, this is a good statistic! However, as we assess our academic program each year we can’t rely solely on the high statistic of our students moving on to college to evaluate success. While we most certainly want to lay a great academic foundation for our students to achieve their dreams beyond high school, we also want to give them the best opportunity to have

their classes count for as much as they can. This view has resulted in several academic program changes for the 2014-2015 school year. New for 2014-2015 school year is the addition of nine Advanced Placement (AP) classes and three Career Tracks (CE). AP classes will give our students the opportunity to begin experiencing the rigor of a college classroom while also giving them the opportunity to earn college credit. The CE tracks will better equip our students to land jobs after graduation. Each of these additions is the result of listening to our community and ascertaining the capabilities of what Western can offer. We are excited about our academic program and in making a difference

in the lives of our students as we equip them for a life of faith and learning.

MSC Choral Festival

Western’s A cappella choir attended the 52nd Annual Mennonite Schools Council Choral Music Festival in April. The festival was hosted by Freeman Academy and Sarasota Christian School in Florida. Students enjoyed performing for and with 200 other choral students from seven different high schools from five states. The mass choir was directed by Dr. Todd W. Guy. The WMS choir would like to thank everyone who attended their Benefit Concert and contributed finances to make it possible for them to travel to Florida, enjoy great choral music, and explore parts of Florida!

Seniors Sign to Play Collegiate Sports Oliver Wisseman ’14 played varsity soccer and basketball at Western and will be playing Soccer for Hesston College next fall. Hailey Reich ’14 played varsity soccer and softball at Western and will be playing soccer at Corban University this fall.

Faculty & Staff Milestones Western is pleased to honor these faculty and staff members for their commitment and sacrifice to serve the students of WMS! The consistency and stability that these faculty and staff provide through their faithful service is what makes Western a special place. Often it is the influence of teachers, coaches, small group leaders, tutors, or some other role that makes the most significant impact on students as they look back on their time at Western. If you have a memory of special significance and would like to share it with one of these individuals please email civanitsky@westernmennoniteschool.org and it will be passed along to the appropriate individuals. 4

Saying Goodbye Joel and Heather Hergert have served at Western for the past four years. Joel has directed the music program and Heather has taught middle school English as well as overseen the Drama Department. They have had two children while working at WMS, Emmaline and Abigail. In April they announced that they would be moving on to a new chapter of life. Joel was accepted at Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas and desires to become a pastor. Joel often spoke in Chapel at Western, where his passion for God’s

work and gifting as a speaker were appreciated by students and staff alike. When asked to reflect on their time at Western Heather shares, “The reason that leaving Western is so hard, even though we know we're going where God wants us, is leaving the family of the WMS community. From Dora (the first person I met) to the custodial and grounds staff to the teachers, administrators and parents, each person was supportive in moving the WMS students toward a closer relationship with God and each other. I will miss each person and pray for

them often. I am looking forward to what God will do through the faithfulness of the Western Mennonite School community.”

New Hires Announced Chad Rush ’89 | Dean of Students Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts from Hesston College, Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Master of Arts in Teaching from Concordia University. “I am excited to be joining the Western Mennonite family once again, this time as a member of the faculty. My experience as a student at Western is something that I still look back on and remember well. Being able to follow in the footsteps of the great teachers and staff that influenced me is something I am really excited about. I look forward to reconnecting with all the Pioneers once again”. Sean Chambers ’10 | Middle School Math Having attended Western for 7 years it became my second home. I am very excited to return home and teach at Western and put to use all the knowledge and training I received at Concordia University. Knowing how much the faculty and staff helped me through the highs and lows of my teenage years while preparing me for my future I am eager to do the same for my students. I feel blessed returning to Western and am very excited for the coming year. Emily Grimes | Director of Music Bachelor of Arts in Music with an Education Concentration from Goshen College. “I am excited to start in my new position at Western Mennonite School. I am a committed musician with a deep dedication to the capabilities of holistic music, especially in the development of adolescent students.” Kory Derochowski ’08 | Janitor Kory is excited to be back at Western and to have the opportunity to pass on the positive experience he had at Western to current students.

Melissa Crowston | Accounts Payable With 20 years of book keeping experience, Melissa is a great addition to our business office. She has a son at Western and says, “I have always loved the community feel here at Western, I am excited to be working with other staff and to experience this community in a new way.” Summer 2014

Advancement Report

In the 20132014 school year, Western Mennonite School celebrated an inspiring year. We saw growth in the lives of students, unveiled a strategic plan to advance our academics, and had an overwhelming amount of financial support once again. The prayers, volunteer hours, and financial gifts provided by you, the Western community, is further evidence of your vital role in sustaining and advancing the future of Western Mennonite School. We are deeply grateful for you and for your partnership in fulfilling our mission of "equipping students for a life of faith and learning." Western Mennonite School has been an inspiration to generations of students and teachers. In an effort to ensure the longevity and success of the school, the school board and administrative team met this past January for a foundational retreat to discuss the state of the school and plan for the future. Out of this retreat came

the detailed "Vision 2020" plan unveiled by the School Board in May of 2014. There are many spiritual and academic aspects to this strategic plan that we are excited about. We feel it will bring a refreshing focus to our school day and overall campus life. One element of the strategic plan is to begin some building updates that will greatly improve our campus. The school's Foundation Board has begun the project of building an addition onto the front of our administration building. This will provide a much needed facelift to the office building and provide a beautiful entranceway into our school. Another component of the vision is making the campus more energy efficient through upgraded windows, heating systems, and improved insulation. In addition, two building projects at the forefront of the campaign are to complete our planned science wing and to update our outdated gymnasium by bringing it up to health and safety codes while improving the functionality of the building. As you can see it is an

exciting time at Western Mennonite School. For two years, we have successfully met budget and have managed to make advancements in buildings, academic program growth, and increase enrollment projections for next year. Through economic challenges and many obstacles we have been faced with in prior years, I am encouraged by the unwavering support we have seen. We thank God for you and your support and partnership in our future! As the Anabaptist values that have shaped our school’s foundation continue to guide our vision, we are thankful for the provision that God has provided as we continue to seek wisdom for the direction of the school. I invite you to continue to join us in prayer and support for Western Mennonite School as we advance into the future. "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." I Thessalonians 5:18 Robby Gilliam Director of Advancement & Finance

Permits have been issued and ground breaking for the new Entryway project is slated for the beginning of July. Gym remodel is dependant on the level of contributions made outside of the current budget. Please call 503.363.2000 if you would like to donate to either of these projects!

I am pleased to present you with a deeper look into the areas of advancement and finance here at Western. As alumni, family, and friends, you are stakeholders in Western’s mission. Western would not be where it is today if it weren’t for God’s faithfulness, the generosity of our community, and the sacrificial service of our faculty and staff. It is my desire for you to share in our excitement for what is ahead for Western. I hope that the information in these two pages will give clarity to our vision, the blessings we have experienced, and the challenges that face us. -Paul Schultz | Head of School

Our 5th annual scholarship banquet will be held September 20th at the Salem Conference Center. It is a wonderful evening full of good fellowship, food and heartwarming testimonies of the blessing that Western Mennonite School has been to our students, alumni and families. All the expenses of the banquet have been covered by our generous table sponsors which allows guests to attend free of charge, and all the proceeds from the free will offering can go directly to student aid. What a blessing this is to students that otherwise could not afford to attend WMS. Over the past four

years this banquet has raised over $160,000 for student grants! Those funds have made the difference for many students who otherwise would have had to look elsewhere for their education. Our hearts are filled with thanksgiving to God and to our very generous donors for being difference makers in so many lives! While admittance to this banquet is by invitation from the table sponsors or hosts, we do not want anyone desiring to come to be left out! There are always extra spots at our tables so please let Charlene know if you are interested in attending. She will turn in your meal selection and make sure that there is a place

for you. If you have someone that you think would be interested in supporting WMS or know a family interested in Christian education for their student we would love to have them come with you. We have to have their reservations ahead of time, so please begin praying and thinking now!

Alumni Highlight | Glen Gibson ’76

As a pastor I was often confronted with people who had become somewhat disillusioned and disappointed in their spiritual life and faith. They had a picture in mind of what their life as a Christian would look like, but reality served them something different--sometimes much different-from what they pictured. I identify with many of those same feelings from experiences I'd had in my own life. Faith is challenged when God doesn’t operate how we expect Him to.

My book was born out of an intersecting of my personal life experiences, the stories and experiences of many others and the story of the life of Abraham in Genesis. Abraham is called the father of faith and yet he experienced many of the same kinds of disappointed assumptions that Christians face today. Although the title might suggest a focus on spiritual disillusionment, it's really about the spiritual journey and the life of faith as a process. It's something that develops, grows and matures over time and through many and various experiences. But along the way God is right there working in and through every part of the process to

bring about his perfect purpose. Thinking of my own children who, like me, were raised in a Christian culture at home, I wanted to give them and others a picture of real faith lived out in the real world. My book is available at my website glenlgibson.com as well as amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, christianbook. com and others. It's also available through bookstores but may need to be by special order. It's also available as an e-book.

Ellis Stutzman tells about his extraordinary experiences when in 1995 he traveled to Kenya with his wife and three young children for a short term voluntary service assignment to manage the Mennonite Guest House in Nairobi, East Africa. Ellis and Sue had a staff of 15 Kenyans and a house full of travelers. The

relationships were a challenge and often hilarious and heartwarming. In 2013, he writes the stories he has relived many times. The result is an action-packed book full of adventure. Meet Jimmy, the vegetable seller with 12 fingers, Muhammed the island guide, Jairo the night guard and the thieves in the night. There are startling travel experiences, outstanding destinations, animal sights, difficult customers, amazing geological and historic observations and boats, automobiles and airplanes! The family

made the best of every moment and share all of these adventures with you in this book. “We now live in rural Lebanon, OR. While I never strayed far from my roots, we caught a glimpse of the world. I am self employed and work mostly with real estate investments”.

Class of 1964 Celebrates 50 Years | Eunice Cramer The Class of ’64 just celebrated our 50th class reunion the first weekend in May at Surftides in Lincoln City. There were 20 (out of 35 in our graduating class) in attendance plus 13 spouses and one classmate from our freshman/sophomore years. Four classmates and several spouses are no longer with us. Linda and Emerson Smoker were our official greeters on Thursday evening, and as someone would drive up you would hear “are they one of us?”, so that became our reunion motto. Everyone had a great time watching the wave of recognition washing across faces as we met one another; meeting and getting reacquainted with friends out of our past; getting updated on everyone’s lives; and laughing and enjoying old friends. “Relaxed but organized” also became a motto in part thanks to the program planning and directing by Marylin Rush. Prizes were given for those traveling the greatest distance. Roy and Tammy Gingrich (2,689 miles) and Walt and Elaine (Zook) Slabaugh (2,550 miles), who live a mere 207 miles almost directly north and south of each other! A prize was also given to Dave Zook, the person voted to look the “most changed” quite possibly due to the handsome, handlebar mustache he was sporting. The prizes
