Looking Forward to 20122013 Fruit of the Month Club

This year’s spiritual theme chosen by the high school Student Council was “Strengthen the Root, Bear the Fruit,” based on John 15:5. Campus Pastor Robby Gilliam ’03 and many other guest speakers used chapel times to help students recognize and develop their spiritual gifts. Identifying those who exemplified the different fruits, the Student Council honored students each month.

By Dr. Darrel Camp, Principal Despite the challenges that arose, the journey WMS has gone through this past year has strengthened our community and taught us valuable lessons as a school. As we have moved forward, I have been amazed at the growth in our students, faculty, and staff; relationships have been fostered and the nurturing community of WMS has helped our students look beyond adversity.

Joy

The life of our community is a great testimony of who God is, which I have witnessed in chapels as students respond to the message of Christ and have served in the local community. I especially see the light of Christ in the less public interactions: the character shown when a student offers to help clean up after an activity they were not involved in, the care demonstrated when a student sees someone who needs cheering up, and the integrity displayed when a student admits participation in an action that could result in consequences. This is the character I see daily in our students.

Admissions Rich Martin ‘85 has done an excellent job in his new role as the Admissions Coordinator this year. With 51 graduating seniors, he has worked hard to bring in new students. We are excited to see the growth of our international program with 20 new students from around the world joining our community in the Fall. The 2012-

2013 budget has been set by the school board based on a minimum enrollment of 230 students and our goal is to reach 250 students. Student Grants In light of hard economic times, we are working to maintain financial stability and continue our ministry to students. One step we are taking for this purpose is to change our grant process. Over 40% of our families currently require financial assistance. This next year, the grant budget will not include exceptional grants, so any family in need of a grant exceeding 50 percent of their tuition must have it met by individual donors. Families requiring additional assistance will apply to our exceptional grant program. This means we will need individuals from our community who are passionate about Christian education to step forward as student sponsors. These individuals will help when situations arise like we faced this past year: Sarah’s 8th grade son, John, had been having a difficult year in his public school. Having been bullied on multiple occasions, John was approached by several gang members who pressured him to choose a gang he would be loyal to. Sarah was determined to find a healthier environment for her son to learn in. After hearing about Western she expressed her desire to get John into classes right away. Sadly, due to our financial situation, we could not admit John as a student at WMS.

We are working to increase our enrollment and invite individual donors to partner with families like Sarah’s. If people commit to providing $332 a month, John would be able to attend Western Mennonite this Fall and begin his first year in our community as a freshman.

Graham Thudium The Thudium family blessed our chapel time as their seven year-old son Graham, struggling with brain cancer, read from his favorite book, “Heaven is for Real.” His desire to share God and express his excitement to go to heaven left a lasting impact on many students and staff. “I was thankful for Graham speaking to us,” said a sixth grade student. “All I could say was ‘I will see you in Heaven!’ He has faith that is far greater than a mustard seed.” Graham passed away on February 16, but our students will forever be changed by their encounter with Graham this year.

Come with me to Beautiful Africa The Watoto Children’s Choir brought their joy, singing and dancing to our chapel in October. Accompanied by a team of adults, the choir presented Watoto’s vision and mission through their stories and performance. The choir acts as an ambassador to raise awareness about the plight of orphaned and vulnerable children in Africa. Each of the children in the choir suffered the loss of their parents either through war or disease, yet still stand and praise Jesus for what He has done.

Learning from Previous Generations Around the World Faith Journey is a class at Western Mennonite School that allows high school students to explore their spiritual walk and learn from previous generations’ journey with God. Teacher Todd Lehman challenges these students to know what their beliefs are by asking how they have been shaped by them. This February and March, Lehman had speakers come from the Mennonite community to share their faith journey. They spoke about the people that influenced their life and talked about how it impacted them

spiritually. Pat Hershberger ‘59 of Zion Mennonite Church shared about Elizabeth Elliot. Sheldon Burkhalter of Zion Mennonite Church talked on Dietrich Bonheoffer. Leo Hartshorn of Zion Mennonite Church spoke about Martin Luther King, Jr. Jack Knox of Salem Mennonite Church shared about a personal connection to medical missions work on the U.S.-Mexico border. “After the speakers came, we talked about certain aspects of the presentation,” commented Lehman. “In the case of Elliot, Pat let us know of several questions that Elliot herself struggled with. Most of these were cross cultural faith questions, which we explore in the class.” As with all the presentations, students looked at the context that each influential person lived in, their call to work for Christ’s kingdom, and the governmental and societal opposition they all faced. Through the class Lehman hopes students see the vision God has for their future and that by exploring the spiritual journey of others his students will make an impact themselves for the kingdom of God. For the annual Spring Service Afternoon, students, faculty and staff served the City of Salem by raking and spreading bark dust on the trail paths at Wallace Marine Park (West Salem). They began by shoveling the wood chips onto tarps to drag to places on the paths that needed a fresh layer of mulch. Condolences To the families of... Alumni

By Jodi Steckly ‘09 Three years ago I was just graduating from high school and I had many expectations of what my future would hold. After one year of community college though, God placed me in New Zealand to do the Adventure Bible School program. It was then that I knew my life was going to look differently than I expected. Today I live in Northern Iraq as an English teacher. The journey has not been easy, and the Middle East is not what I expected it to be like. Life as a single woman is much different than in the West. I never wear anything above the knees, I am rarely out past dark, and I get stared at by the local men. The Life Center I work at offers many great opportunities to start friendships with the locals and I have made many great women friends there. We meet three times a week with our students. Two nights we teach and one night we gather for coffee, games, and great conversation time. This is all done in English. We also hold women’s events or Center picnics, which are always a hit for the students. The people here are so hospitable that I know if I need anything my friends will bend over backwards to help me. Several of my local friends love to

take me out for lunch or shopping when there is free time. Two of my closest local friends have never had a birthday party, so my roommates and I threw them each a party when they turned twenty-three. They were so excited over a few simple gifts and a birthday cake! During one of our conversations, one of the girls said that she likes spending time with us because we are trustworthy and pure of heart. This is great to hear because it shows that Christ’s light is showing through us. The next time we were together, God used my necklace that has a cross and a ring on it with the inscription, “Everything is possible when you have faith.” He opened up a conversation about what we believe as followers of Christ and led us to ask them questions about what they believe. This is a huge step for these girls to even think about such things, let alone have a conversation with Christians about it. Three years ago the Middle East was the last place I would have expected to live, but the time here has been worth it. I am thankful that God has changed my expectations and has made life living for Him so exciting. It is difficult at times, but to be able to share the Love of Jesus in a dark place is worth the trials.

Class of 1961 Celebrates 50 Years By Leona Kropf ‘61 The 50th class reunion for the class of 1961 was held on August 13, 2011, on the WMS campus. Has it really been that long ago? There were 27 class members present for this special event, plus spouses and sponsors, totaling 42 people. Three classmates, Darrel Kauffman, Gerald Kauffman, and Wayne Shank, are deceased, as well as the classmates of several spouses. After registration, visiting, displays, and brunch, we enjoyed a time of class trivia and sharing of memories, followed by a campus tour. The oldest classmate, Al Yoder, and the youngest, Elvon Kauffman, were present at this reunion. Bev Johnson Knox was the first classmate to marry, with her wedding in October following graduation. Of classmates present, 12 live in Oregon, 13 live out-of-state, and 2 live outside of the United States. Jeannie Heyerly lived in the most places (13) and 3 people have always lived in Oregon. Together we have 67 children, 107 grandchildren (Irene with the most at 15), and 16 great grandchildren. We represent many walks of life including pastors, teachers, doctors, nurses, secretaries, administrators, accountants, managers, meat cutters, domestics, purchasers, missionaries, housewives, bus drivers, and others. Our memories at the reunion were fun and foggy, and we had many good laughs! After dinner together, Elvon Kauffman led us on a journey reflecting on “Alumni Imprints in Our World” with others sharing on this theme.

Class of 1962 Celebrates 50 Years By Jim Schweitzer ’62 The class of 1962 celebrated its 50th reunion at the Surftides in Lincoln City. We enjoyed listening to the life recaps that each of the 19 classmates presented. We were saddened to learn of Ilene Buschert's death. Glen and Annabelle Roth, our class sponsors, joined us in sharing stories, humor and inspiration. It just so happened that Lorne Peachy's car problems provided him the opportunity to spend some time with us. Pat (Hooley) Martin is compiling a summary of all the classmate stories that will be shared with those unable to attend. Big Brother/Big Sister Program Increases Student Mentoring Now in its third year at Western Mennonite, the Big Brother/Big Sister program is making a noticeable impact on campus. Big Brother/Big Sister began at Western when a group of students wanted to make a difference in the school environment. They recognized the negative barriers between the high school and middle school and decided to change it at Western. What started as an idea is now a popular club, having most of the student body involved. “I think Western’s community is strong because

of programs like this. The Big Brother/ Big Sister program brings the whole school together,” reflected last year’s Big Brother of the Year Brandon Wood ’12.

Middle school students involved are excited for the chance to positively grow from their older peers. Haley O’Neil ‘15, then in eighth grade, iterated, “I can really connect with my Big Sister. She texts me and leaves little encouraging notes like, ‘I thought about you today.’ She is like the real big sister I never had.”

NHS Blood Drive Held on Campus The National Honor Society held their annual Blood Drive in May. The American Red Cross came to campus with a donation bus allowing students, faculty and staff to give blood and make a difference in the lives of people in need. A WMS alum also came and contributed that day! Throughout the morning and afternoon, 28 units of blood were donated, potentially saving or extending life to 84 people.

WMS Senior Calla Stinson Honored Statesman Journal Academic AllStar WMS Senior Calla Stinson ‘12 was honored on February 19, 2012 as a Statesman Journal Academic All-Star along with 36 other high school students from the area. The award is given to students who strive to make their schools and their communities a better place, noting their talent, compassion and sheer excellence. Calla was also recognized for her extensive work in the community, winning the Statesman Journal’s Community Service Award. Calla has achieved a 4.0 GPA, was one of her graduating class Valedictorians, and has been a member of the National Honor Society for three years, receiving the 2011 Citizenship Award. She has been on the Western Mennonite Church Worship Team, served as a

nursery worker, Sunday school sub, and teacher during Vacation Bible School. She has also served at the Hope Pregnancy Center and the Mennonite Missions Network in Reedley, California. School activities Calla has been involved in include Book Club, International Club, A cappella Choir, and Student Council. She was the Varsity Soccer co-captain in 2011, playing all four years of high school, and was a member of the tech team for the musical production in 2012. Next year, Calla plans to attend YWAM (Youth With a Mission) in Blackfalds, AB, and in the spring attend college. She plans to study to be an elementary school teacher. In Touch Summer 2012

Current Capital Project

In the Spring of 2011, the WMS Foundation began developing its initial capital project. The challenge was to find a project that reflected the quality of our students and education program within the confines of our economic reality. From this vision came Gateway to Our Future. The Gateway to Our Future capital project hopes to better reflect the quality of WMS and aid in attracting new students and families. It will also include enhancements to energy efficiency resulting in perpetual savings to the school. The updates will closely tie into the quality of the new library/academic center. In June of 2012 the WMS Foundation Board evaluated the timeline of Gateway to Our Future. The project was announced to the WMS community at an open house

meeting in December 2011, but in an effort to help the school focus on reaching budgeted financial goals, a waiting period was instated. Committed to seeing the project through its completion, the Foundation board reopened Gateway to Our Future and closed their meeting by pledging $55,000 toward the project. The Foundation will now begin moving forward with its plans to raise the $500,000 needed to build the new school entrances and continue laying out the plans for construction to begin this coming school year. The Gateway to Our Future projects will require $500,000 in order to be constructed, and as of June 2012 gifts totaling $80,000 have been generously donated.

Alumni Update: Nick Sands ‘11 WMS Alum Nick Sands ’11 is currently a freshman at Colorado Christian University majoring in business with a political science minor. He is a member of the CCU men’s soccer team, which is a competitive team in the NCAA Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Preparing for his future in ministry, Nick will be taking extra Bible and language classes (Spanish and German) over the next few years. He senses God’s calling to do full time soccer ministry, which he is exploring during his time at college. Last year Nick worked at a refugee camp just outside of Vienna where about half of the people are Muslim. “The Oasis” camp he worked at serves meals, tea and coffee to the refugees to meet their physical needs while sharing the gospel. During his time there he also worked at an academy teaching

soccer, enjoying his time working with the young kids and impacting their lives for Christ. This year, Nick will have the opportunity to go to Kosovo and be a part of the SOS ministry for one week. While there the team will partner with a local church to do soccer camps, using the time as outreach to build relationships in the community. He will also be supporting the full time Surge International staff in their ongoing ministries with refugees, Bible studies, soccer and English camps, and reaching out to the people. Surge International is a Christian organization using soccer, the world’s most popular sport, to break down social barriers and provide opportunities to share the Christian message of hope around the world. Nick asks for prayers as he continues to seek God’s leading.

Alumni Update: Tim Fahndrich ’85 Since being a student at WMS, Tim Fahndrich ‘85 has not only been working in the internet and marketing business, but devoted his time to staying active in the WMS community. Tim is the boys varsity soccer coach at WMS and regularly attends events on campus. His children currently are enrolled at Western, Elyssa Fahndrich ‘15 and Johnny Fahndrich ‘18, and his wife Pam is the worship leader for Western Mennonite Church and a great supporter of WMS. Alumni Update: Kendra Boettger ‘99 “The room was sprinkled with only a handful of people to start, but then came more to join in, including a man from Greece. He had heard news of how God had been stirring people’s hearts to pray and worship and desired to get a taste for himself. If you know anything about the history between the Greeks and Turks, you know that it is not pretty. Especially in the early 1900’s, much blood was shed on the very land I walk on. We often pray for deeper reconciliation between the people groups represented in this nation. Little did we know, tonight would bring a step in that direction. ‘I’m here from Greece,’ the man said. ‘And I am here to taste and see what the Father is doing among you through prayer and worship. I come tonight as

a brother in Jesus Christ from an enemy nation. I know that where there is righteousness, there is blessing, and where there is sin there are curses. The world knows that our situation in Greece is not good, and could it be the result of our sin—generations and generations of unacknowledged sin?’ And as he continued to pour out his heart and ask forgiveness for the way his forefathers had shed the blood of many Turks, which cannot but lead to anything but lack of blessing, a local brother came and did the same, asking forgiveness for the bloodshed of many Greeks at the hands of his forefathers. And we all joined in, acknowledging in our own hearts, as locals and foreigners alike, the seeds of sin that lead to hate and unforgiveness in our

Student Grows Through Unique School Experience, Teaches Class of Peers One of Western Mennonite’s students had the unique opportunity to teach and write lesson plans for the Sophomore English class this past semester. Under the guidance of faculty member Linda Knox, who teaches high school English and math, Senior Taylor Simpson ‘12 learned about the preparation needed to successfully teach a class and gained skills in creating an atmosphere for Taylor Simpson learning. Taylor was a teacher aide the second semester of the 2011-2012 academic year and was given assignments by Mrs. Knox to be completed each six weeks. Together they composed projects that Taylor had an interest in and also tied into the class requirements. The first project she completed was a drama unit. “We began with Antigone and I had the sophomores make masks representing both a character and an emotion from the production,” commented Taylor. Once the students had created their masks and talked about it in class, they placed them in the library display case. The last six weeks, Taylor designed a

project for the Novel class that correlated with their study on Of Mice and Men. Because the novel focuses heavily on the American dream, the students made what were called “Dream Trees,” paper-made trees that showed the students’ own American dream starting with their beginnings at the root and ending with their complete dream in the highest branches. “I Linda Knox am only two years older than the class, yet I was teaching them and assigning them homework,” Taylor reflected. “I realized that the remarks from the class were only slightly exaggerated because I was up front, but that teachers experience this behavior every single day.” Her teacher, Mrs. Knox, saw growth in Taylor’s abilities throughout the semester. “Over time Taylor became more confident in teaching the class and learned how to plan reasonable assignments. She is contemplating pursuing a literature major next year in college, so we decided together to set up her teacher aide period to be centered around the teaching experience.” Because most students do not have a teaching opportunity until they attend college, Taylor took advantage of her situation. “I learned that there needs to be several things to think ahead on while planning a lesson, like goals, activities, materials and evaluations. Mrs. Knox also taught me how to draw out discussion in class, and that it helps to simplify worksheets and speeches.”

Administrative Reorganization To Take Place at WMS The WMS School Board recently conducted a review of the administrative functions necessary for the operation of a successful private school and compared these functions with the gifts of the current administration. Through this process of inquiry, the Board has identified several areas where the school could be strengthened by deliberate investment in particular areas of administrative development.

Although the restructuring process will likely modify some administrative roles, the change as a whole is expected to be budget neutral.

Western’s third annual Benefit Scholarship Banquet is going to be held at the Salem Conference Center on September 15th. The purpose of the banquet is to raise funds for students who couldn’t otherwise attend WMS. All expenses of the banquet are covered by generous table sponsors, so the night of the banquet all proceeds go to student grants. We still have room for a few more tables, so we invite you to sponsor a table. The cost of sponsorship is $450.

Poetry Month Brings Creative Activities The last week of April Western celebrated Poetry Month with numerous activities. The week included set aside times for students to get involved and share their creativity. One day was Middle School Poetry Out Loud in the library where middle school classes shared poetry they had written in class. The high school students also had Poetry Out Loud and presented poems they had constructed in English class. On another day, the entire student body was encouraged to take part in Poem in Your Pocket Day. On this nationally recognized day, students were to select a favorite poem and carry it with them to share with their friends. The final creative activity was a day for sidewalk

40th Annual Benefit Auction Another Success On Saturday, May 5, Western Mennonite School held its 40th Annual Benefit Auction. Over 800 people from the community came to support the students and program at WMS, and because of their generosity they helped raise over $109,000. Top live auction items included quilts made by Connie Rodriquez and Albany Mennonite Church, a resort pontoon boat, cascading rock fountain, and iPad. A combined total of $10,200 was raised to specifically support the special projects for this year, which were student grants and repairing our gravel roads.

Winners of the Class Gift Competition were the Class of 1958 for raising the most money on auction day ($1,830), and the Class of 1974 for turning in the most money pre-auction ($1,250) and also for having the most creative gift (Pendleton Vacation Package).

Congratulations to the high school A cappella Choir for placing 4th in the 2A/1A state choir championships. Choir Director Joel Hergert and the A cappella students worked hard this year to continue the rich musical heritage of Western’s choral program. They have placed within the top 4 choirs in the state for eleven years in a row.

Special Project: Gravel Road Repair Thanks to those who gave to the special project for repairing gravel roads on the WMS campus. Cal Emmert ’56 and his crew began scraping, grading and graveling the following week after the auction. Update on $1,000 School Board Challenge In February Western’s School Board presented a $1,000 challenge to the community. Many of you answered the call, expressing your desire to see Western continue to make an impact in the lives of students and all that come onto campus. $34,025 has been received from those stepping up to this challenge. We are encouraged by those who have put into action their support for Western. God’s faithfulness in both the good and difficult times is truly a blessing.

Linda has been a teacher at Western Mennonite for seven years. She has taught high school Math and English and has been the lead teacher for the high school. “I’ve felt very supported while at WMS and am encouraged and optimistic about the students.” Linda retires from teaching to move to Arizona with her husband and serve at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Linda Walker Middle School Band Linda Walker returned to WMS in the Fall of 2010 after teaching middle school band on campus one year earlier. She brought a wonderful spirit and great enthusiasm for the students. Linda retires from teaching this year and will spend time with her husband traveling in the coming months and being grandma to her grandchildren.

New Coaches Announced for Girls Basketball and Soccer WMS hired Campus Pastor and Dorm Director Robby Gilliam ’03 to lead the Lady Pioneer basketball team this coming Robby Gilliam year. Gilliam has coached boys basketball at Western since 2003. He is a graduate of Western Mennonite and has worked at WMS since 2008. “Western is an amazing school with fantastic students, an incredible community, and a supportive administration,” he said. “Western basketball has a long tradition of success. I am excited to continue this tradition and believe the future is

bright for our girls program.” Spanish teacher Kelsey Sommer and English teacher Ben Handrich ‘05 were hired as co-head coaches for the girls soccer team. Sommer, a graduate of Canby High School, played soccer at Eastern Mennonite University and has taught at Western since 2009. Handrich is a graduate of WMS, played one year of soccer at Goshen College, and has taught at Western since 2010. “Both Kelsey and I are excited for the upcoming season,” Handrich said. “Western has had a successful program over the past number of years, and we are hoping to both sustain and improve upon the foundations the previous coach

set. The bar is high, and we know that. We are eagerly looking forward to the challenge this fall.” The school is anticipating great results in the girls athletic programs under the new coaches. “We are excited about the new coaching hires,” Athletic Director Gary Hull said. “The new leadership and direction of our girls athletics going forward is going to be exciting to watch.”

Gary Hull has spent the past 26 years dedicated to WMS and teaching his varsity boys basketball players the value of teamwork, positive attitude, and commitment to excellence. On February 2, 2012, Gary Hull joined the exclusive 500 win club for coaches. He has moved into the 11th place on the Oregon all time wins list for coaches. Hull also lead his team to a 2nd place finish in the State Tournament this year, completing another successful season.
