2010 - 2011

Head coach Greg Bruce enters his fifth season at the helm of the Western Oregon women’s basketball program. After taking over a program that was winless in the season prior to his arrival, Bruce has continued to improve the Wolves, including leading them to an 11win season, which was the school’s first double-digit win season since 2002-03. He has also coached a Western Oregon student-athlete to first team All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference honors in each year at the reigns of the Wolves’ program. During Bruce’s coaching career he has also served as the head women’s basketball coach at Portland State, Northern Colorado, Cal State Bakersfield and Fort Lewis. In 18 years as a head coach, he has a sparkling record of 312-199 (.628). That includes a 10-year run at Portland State from 1987 through 1996 when the Vikings went 199-89, reaching the NCAA title game in 1995 and finishing a school-best 31-3 in 1992. Bruce was inducted into the Portland State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. His team’s accomplishments still dominate the school’s record books. The Vikings won five consecutive Pacific West Conference titles and at one time ran off 50 consecutive wins at home. The 1986 PSU squad listed second in the nation in scoring (85.6 ppg), and his 1994 club led the country in threepoint percentage (.429). Bruce’s sterling career includes a year at Cal State Bakersfield (2000-01) where he led a first-year program to a 21-7 record and post-season play, the first time in NCAA history that a men’s or women’s team qualified for the tournament in its first year of existence. Be also coached three seasons at Northern Colorado (1998-2000), leading the Bears to a 58-28 record and two NCAA tournament appearances. His 1997-98 team went 21-8 and set 14 UNC school records, including most three-pointers made per game (7.8). Prior to WOU, Bruce was the head coach at Fort Lewis College (Colorado) in 2004-05 (15-13), and was an assistant at UC Davis for three seasons (2002-04). Before beginning his legendary tenure at Portland State, he was an assistant coach for three seasons at Notre Dame (1984-86), and was the head boys or girls coach at Thunderbird High School in Phoenix, Arizona from 1972-84. His career record at the high school level is 140-43. A native of Nantic, Illinois, Bruce graduated from Purdue University in 1972, and earned his master’s from Arizona State in 1977. He and his wife Lyla have been married for 38 years, and they have a son Kyle who attends Western Oregon University.

ASSISTANT COACHES Renae Gregg begins her first season as an assistant basketball coach for the Western

Oregon Wolves, however, her experience as a coach can be traced back for over a decade. After playing for Coach Bruce at Portland State from 1989-93, Gregg earned an opportunity to play overseas. She went to Australia and played for a number of teams for 1994-2000. In her first season there she helped lead New South Wales to the championship and she also received multiple player of the year honors during her tenure. She decided to get into coaching. Gregg’s first coaching job was as the boy’s basketball coach at Milford High School in Utah. She led the team to the state tournament every year, and won two regional titles. Her best finish was third place at the state tournament. She then took the job of head coach for Sandy High School’s women’s basketball team from 2006-10.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Katie Torland joins the coaching staff after a very successful career on the court for the

Wolves. Torland was a three-year letterwinner for WOU and is one of just two student-athletes in the history of Western Oregon to twice be named to the All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference first team. For her career she averaged 15.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals. She was also named the Marquis Spas women’s basketball player of the year in her junior and senior season, and was selected to seven straight all-tournament teams.

In women’s basketball, a GNAC team has reached the NCAA west regional championship 10 times in the past nine seasons. The GNAC has seen two of its teams, Seattle Pacific and Alaska Anchorage, match up in the west region finals in two of the past three seasons for right to go to the Elite Eight and play for the Division II championship. Since 2004, the GNAC has sent a team to Elite Eight in five of the six seasons with two reaching the semifinals and Seattle Pacific finishing runner-up in 2004. In 2009-10, the GNAC had three teams (UAA, WWU and SPU) finish the year ranked in the Top 25 in the final poll, according the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
