The Portland Timbers U-23s open their fourth Premier Development League (PDL) season on Friday as they play host to Fraser Valley Mariners FC at JELD-WEN Field. The Timbers U-23s bring back some familiar faces and adds some new ones as the team looks to contend in the PDL’s Northwest Division in 2012. The Boys Are Back This season, the Timbers U-23s return seven players who have been with the team previously. Returning for a fourth season are midfielders Roberto Farfan (above) and Steven Evans, local products who have combined for nine goals and seven assists in 53 PDL games. The Timbers U-23s also return one of their top goal scorers from 2011 in forward Erik Hurtado. Last season, Hurtado shared the team lead with eight goals. After a season away, the Timbers U-23s see the return of defender Chris Harms, who played two seasons with the team from 2009-10. A Portland native, Harms is coming off an all-conference junior season at Oregon State University. Other returners include midfielder Ricardo Carrillo, defender Reed Matte and goalkeeper Keegan Rogers. Matte is coming off an all-conference season at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. From our own backyard The Timbers U-23s continue to field a roster filled with local talent. In 2012, the Timbers U-23s feature seven players from Oregon, including Carrillo (Prineville), Evans (Troutdale), Farfan (Portland), Harms (Portland), Hurtado (Beaverton), Clark Phillips (Portland) and Rogers (Troutdale).

The Timbers U-23s’ roster includes three other players from around the Northwest, including native Washingtonians in goalkeeper Spencer Richey and midfielder/forward Cam Vickers and Surrey, B.C. native Justin Baarts. Welcome to the Rose City The Timbers U-23s have a handful of new players from across the United States, getting their first tastes of the Rose City. Midfielders Joey De Mare (College of Charleston) and Anthony Ribeiro (Creighton), defender Anthony Hobbs (Florida International) and forward Mark Sherrod (Memphis) traveled across the country to join the Timbers U-23s for the 2012 season. A bit shorter of a trek to the Northwest, Southern California players John McFarlin (Loyola Marymount) and Evyn Hewett (San Diego State), join the Timbers U-23s after standout freshman seasons. In total the 2012 Timbers U-23s represents nine different states/provinces outside of Oregon: Alabama, British Columbia, California, Minnesota, Ontario, Sourth Carolina, Tennessee, Washington and Wisconsin. The head man Jim Rilatt returns to lead the Timbers U-23s for a fourth season in 2012. Rilatt, the 2010 PDL Coach of the Year, has been with the team since its inaugural PDL season in 2009. During his time as head coach of the Timbers U-23s Rilatt has compiled a record of 33-9-6. College roll call The Timbers U-23s once again feature top players from local colleges, with the University of Portland and Oregon State University being represented the most on the team’s 2012 roster. The team’s roster includes four players from the University of Portland, including newcomer Marc Tonkel. Three players from OSU join the Timbers U-23s this season, including 2011 All-Pac-12 forward Emery Welshman. Miller a standout at Creighton University, also participated in camps with the U.S. U-20 National Team in January and February and is only of only a few select players to have been called up for each of the team’s camps in 2012. Hobbs brings experience competing in the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup and the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup with New Zealand youth national teams. He has played alongside Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson with the New Zealand U-17 National Team at the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup. U-23s

Editor's Note: With the Portland Timbers hosting the Seattle Sounders at JELD-WEN Field on Sunday in a Cascadia Cup clash (Presented by PGE; 2:00pm PT, ESPN, 750 AM The Game / La Pantera 940), we're taking a look throughout the week at some of the memorable moments that have occured over the near 40-year history of the Portland-Seattle soccer rivalry. Moment #1: Timbers and Sounders ignite league with first MLS Cascadia rivalry match With a history that stretches back long before Major League Soccer even existed, the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders have a rivalry that crosses state borders and civic pride. Now with both teams in MLS, the stakes have raised to the next level. The MLS era of that journey began early in the 2011 season. On May 14, both teams met for the first time in MLS play at a rain-soaked then-Qwest Field with over 36,000 in attendance and a section of Timbers Army supporters making the trek to Seattle. “From a club and WATCH: Portland face Sounders in rainy Seattle player standpoint, this was probably the most important game, said Timbers goalkeeper Troy Perkins about that night.

“That was probably the most important game for us as an MLS club, it certainly was monumental to go there and draw 1-1.” Going down a goal in the 52nd minute, Portland found the right opportunity to beat veteran goalkeeper Kasey Keller not long after. In the 64th minute, Sal Zizzo made a slicing run with te ball towards the middle only to be tripped up. Captain Jack Jewsbury took the ensuing free kick and he lofted a beautifully placed ball into the box. Though plenty of Sounders defenders swarmed the area, Futty Danso found enough room and position to get his head on the ball and knock it past Keller. Portland and Seattle would continue to battle in search of a game winner, however in the end, the first Portland-Seattle match up in the MLS era came to a thrilling 1-1 end. The match was a debut for many more to come and the infectious environment was one that MLS as a league was happy to help spread. “The whole Cascadia rivalry is what the league wants out of every club,” Perkins explained. “You’re starting to see little things pop up around the league. That’s what the MLS wants, and they want it right away, and I think we have a great thing here already.”

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Midfielder Fernando Monge scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute and contributed an assist to lead Seattle Sounders FC U-23 to a 4-3 victory over the Portland Timbers U-23s before a spirited crowd of 1,631 at Kiggins Bowl on Friday night. Down 2-1 at halftime, the Timbers U-23s rallied back on two occasions in the second half on goals by forward Erik Hurtado and midfielder Cam Vickers to pull even at 3-3 with their Cascadia rivals in the 72nd minute. A late corner kick led to a scramble in front of the Timbers U-23s goal and Monge was able to knock in the game-winner in the 88th minute as Seattle handed Portland its first home loss of the season. The two sides combined for three goals in the first 30 minutes of the contest, with Timbers U-23s forward Mark Sherrod finding the opening strike just 10 minutes in. Sounders FC U-23s then scored twice in a nine-minute span, using an own goal and a tally from midfielder Sean Morris to take a 2-1 lead at the break. Sounders FC U-23s took a 3-2 lead in the 67th minute, shortly after Hurtado had pulled the Timbers U-23s even just 10 minutes into the second half, as a foul by Portland in the box led to a penalty kick goal from Aodhan Quinn. Sherrod scored his team-best seventh goal of the season, Hurtado netted a goal in a third straight match and midfielder Roberto Farfan logged his first assist of the season for the Timbers U-23s (6-3-1, 19pts). With the loss, the team falls to fourth place in the Premier Development League’s Northwest Division.

Monge recorded his fifth goal and second assist of the season, Quinn notched his fourth goal and Morris scored his third to lead Sounders FC U-23 (6-2-3, 21pts) to a fourth win in five games. Seattle moves to within two points of the division-leading Kitsap Pumas. Sherrod opened the scoring early, finding the back of the net in the 10th minute off a cross in from the right side by Farfan. In on the near post, Sherrod one-timed a shot from close distance past Sounders FC U-23 goalkeeper Doug Herrick. Seattle responded with back-to-back goals to pull ahead 2-1, starting with an own goal off a play initiated by forward Jamael Cox from the left side of the box in the 21st minute. In the 30th minute, a long throw-in sprung Monge for a breakaway, who then set up Morris for a chip shot past Portland goalkeeper Spencer Richey to help Sounders FC U-23s grab the lead. The Timbers U-23s tied the score at 2-2 in the 55th minute, as Hurtado benefitted from a miscue by Herrick on a long ball played into the box. Herrick miss-timed his run off his line and the ball slipped by. Hurtado charged in and tapped a rolling shot into the back of an open net. Quinn’s penalty-kick goal helped Sounders FC U-23s regain the lead at 3-2 seven minutes after the hour mark, but the Timbers U-23s were able fight back once again to tie the score in the 72nd minute. Vickers crushed a shot from the top right corner of the penalty area that curled just past the reach of Herrick and landed in the top far corner of the goal for his third strike of the season. A late corner kick set up the game-winning goal by Monge in the closing minutes of the match. The ball swung in from the left side and bounced around the box, with the Timbers U-23s having and chance to clear it from danger. Monge was able to get a touch on the ball to direct it toward goal, and a Timbers U-23s player was unable to clear it off the line as the ball crossed over for the Seattle win. The Timbers U-23s face a second game in four days as they visit North Sound SeaWolves FC on Monday, June 25, at Edmonds Woodway High School in Edmonds, Wash.; kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (Pacific). The match against North Sound opens a stretch of three straight on the road for Portland. Notes: The loss was the Timbers U-23s’ first defeat at home in league play this season. The team had won its first five consecutive home matches entering Friday’s contest … The four goals conceded by the Portland defense to Sounders FC U-23 was the most allowed in a single game in 2012; the team had allowed only three goals at home entering the match … Sounders FC U-23 won both matches of the 2012 season series against the Timbers U-23s … Timbers U-23s forward Erik Hurtado has scored in three consecutive games from June 9-22 … Portland has scored three or more goals in five of their 10 regular-season games … The Timbers U-23s’ own goal was the team’s first of the season … Friday marked the time Timbers U-23s’ team history in which they had scored three goals and suffered a loss … Friday’s match was the first in a Cascadia weekend as the first teams for both Portland and Seattle meet Sunday in an Major League Soccer match at JELD-WEN Field on ESPN. Mano a Mano: Wallace's Ticos vs. Purdy's La Selecta tonight in World Cup qualifying By Jason Harrel 33

With 2014 World Cup qualifiers happening this weekend, there's an interesting CONCACAF clash today with two Timbers involved. Tonight at 7pm PT, defender Steve Purdy will take to the field with La Selecta of El Salvador as they travel to Costa Rica to take on Timbers teammate midfielder/defender Rodney Wallace and his Ticos. For Purdy and El Salvador, it will be a tall order. Over the course of 71 years and 19 games, El Salvador has never won in Costa Rica. The Central American footballing history between the two nations runs deep. In the Independence Contenary Games in Guatemala City in 1921, which was Costa Rica's national debut, the Ticos defeated El Salvador 7-0. Costa Rica has also qualified for the World Cup three times in their history with their most recent trip in 2006.

Rodney Wallace's Costa Rica vs. Steve Purdy's El Salvador: Who will win?

Costa Rica El Salvador Draw

Vote View Results

Purdy’s El Salvador looks to turn their luck around tonight against a team they've had some tough losses including most recently in 2007 UNCAF Nations Cup. El Salvador, the host nation that year, advanced to the semifinals at the top of Group 1, but lost 2-0 to Costa Rica who would eventually move on to be champions. Neither Wallace nor Purdy featured in that tournament but you can bet their respective teams' fans will remember. Moreover, La Selecta hasn't been to the World Cup since 1982. With this initial qualifier on the line, both teams look to move onto their next opponents. Following tonight's match, Costa Rica and El Salvador will see their next game on June 12, when Costa Rica will face Guyana and El Salvador will meet Mexico. Both Purdy and Wallace have been Wallace v Purdy making periodic updates on Twitter about their travels and international play. Give them a follow at @rodwallace22 and @spurdy25 respectively. Who do you think will win?

PORTLAND, Ore. – Issaquah SC found three second-half goals as they went on to beat the adidas Timbers Alliance club Portland Rain, 3-1, on Friday, June 29 at Lincoln High School in WPSL play. Portland Rain's Kenya Corder opened the scoring in the 23rd minute as a Portland corner kick landed with enough power in the middle of a scrum to take a high bounce. Cordner rose to meet the ball high off the bounce to head it into the goal But Issaquah SC fought back to score three unanswered goals. In the 53rd minute, Stephanie Cunnings worked her way into the goal box to score a goal very reminiscent of Portland’s goal. Issaquah's Shauna Anderson broke the tie in the 67th minute as both teams worked to clear the ball out of the penalty area. However, Anderson found herself with the ball at her feet and an open goal to sneak the ball in just past a confused Rain goalkeeper. Issaquah SC added a third goal of the match just three minutes later in the 70th minute as Joanna Houplin fired the ball into the goal from distance. The Rain will travel to play Oregon Rush on July 1, at Summit High School. Club

You think you learned a lot about staying healthy and fit throughout your days in school? Well why not bring your best to JELD-WEN Field on Friday, June 1, for the final Health and Fitness School Day, presented by Providence Sports Care Center in 2012 starting at 9 a.m. On this Friday local school kids from the Portland Metro area will invade JELD-WEN Field once again just as they did last week where they set a Premier Development League (PDL) record with 8,029 in attendance as they saw the Portland Timbers U-23s win their third straight match over the Kitsap Pumas 4-0. Last week kids in had the opportunity to learn from local doctors about ways to stay healthy by not smoking or recognizing health issues that may effect your friends or family by Dr. Jane and her Rebels. Team doctor Dr. Beckerman gave kids the steps to CPR and other life saving actions. To top it off the excitement of learning ways to stay healthy and fit, you will get to see the first place PDL Timbers U-23s play Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-23 at 11 a.m. So put your best bet on the pitch and show us just what you have in that healthy body of yours. Who knows? You may learn something new to boot. Tickets for Friday’s match at $7 and are available for purchase at the JELD-WEN Field box office.

GLADSTONE, Ore. – The Portland Timbers U-23s defeated the Kitsap Pumas 2-1 in a divisional playoff match at Gladstone High School on Sunday evening, booking a trip to the Premier Development League’s Western Conference semifinals. Portland forward Mark Sherrod scored the quickest goal of the Timbers U-23s’ season in just the second minute and setup midfielder Roberto Farfan for the game-winning strike midway through the second half. Portland goalkeeper Spencer Richey also turned in a solid performance on what was a busy night for him despite making just one save. The Timbers U-23s wasted no time taking a 1-0 lead by the second minute. Sherrod nodded home defender Anthony Hobbs’ long throw-in from deep in Kitsap territory to stake the Timbers U-23s to an early advantage. Kitsap answered five minutes later through defender Zack Sampson. A shot from distance deflected to Sampson, who redirected it past Richey in the seventh minute, knotting the score at 1-1. The match remained tied until Farfan, a 61st-minute substitute for midfielder Cam Vickers, drove home the game-winning strike in the 69th minute. Sherrod settled the ball for Farfan, whose left-footed half volley from just outside the right corner of the penalty area found the far side netting past Kitsap goalkeeper Zac Lubin, giving the Timbers U-23s a 2-1 win over the defending-PDL champion Pumas. The Timbers U-23s will travel to Ventura, Calif., for the Western Conference semifinals. The Timbers U-23s and Seattle Sounders FC U-23

Notes: With the win the Timbers U-23s improve to 2-0 all-time in playoff matches against Kitsap … Sherrod’s goal was his 11th of the season; he is the third Timbers U-23s player in team history to record 10 or more goals in a season, joining Brent Richards (2010) and Ryan Youngblood (2009) in accomplishing the feat … Hobbs recorded his first assist for the Timbers U-23s on Sherrod’s goal.

The Portland Timbers U-23s’ 2012 Premier Development League (PDL) season, presented by Billups Worldwide, was one that will not be easily forgotten. The Timbers U-23s assembled a perfect start to the season, earned numerous accolades, set a new PDL attendance record and took part in their first Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup during another successful season under head coach Jim Rilatt. The team capped its season by reaching the Western Conference semifinals for a second time in three seasons. A hot start The Timbers U-23s made a strong statement to the rest of the Northwest Division by opening the campaign with wins in each of their first five matches (5-0-0). A 3-0 season-opening win over Fraser Valley Mariners FC at JELD-WEN Field set the tone for the team’s first third of the season and helped create momentum heading into a big early season matchup with division rivals the Kitsap Pumas. On May 24, the Timbers U-23s and Pumas squared off in the first of two Health & Fitness School Days, presented by Providence Sports Care Center, at JELD-WEN Field. The Timbers U-23s received a brace by midfielder Steven Evans and midfielder Cam Vickers tallied two assists in a 4-0 shut-out victory, the team’s first of four clean sheets on the season. Portland would go on to win its next two games, defeating Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-23 twice in five days. It took a stoppage time goal by the Seattle Sounders FC U-23 to snap the Timbers U-23s’ perfect start, as Portland took 1-0 road loss on June 23.

During the Timbers U-23s roaring start, they scored 15 goals, recorded three shutouts and conceded just two goals. U.S. Open Cup One of the highlights of the season was the team’s first participation in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Timbers U-23s played host to PSA Elite of the U.S. Adult Soccer Association and the USASA Region IV champions in the first round of the 2012 tournament on May 15 at JELD-WEN Field. Recognized for their efforts Over the course of the season, several Timbers U-23s players were recognized by the PDL for their individual performances. Forward Mark Sherrod took home PDL Player of the Week honors in Week 3 after notching a hat trick against Victoria Highlanders FC on May 19. In all, 12 Timbers U-23s players received PDL weekly honors, including Team of the Week selections for Sherrod and Eric Miller; 10 others received honorable mentions. Timbers U-23s midfielder/defender Eric Miller received two call-ups to the U.S. U-20 National Team during the 2012 PDL campaign. He joined the team for a South American tour to Uruguay and Chile in June and was then recalled for the prestigious Northern Ireland Milk Cup at season’s end. The final push … With the season moving into its final weeks, the Timbers U-23s battled for a top spot in the Northwest Division. Needing only one point heading into their July 6 showdown with Washington Crossfire to secure their third playoff berth in four years, the Timbers U-23s came away with all three points. A sharply-placed cross from the right side by midfielder Nick Hamer set up Sherrod for a game-winning header in a 1-0 victory, securing the team’s first trip back to the postseason since it won the PDL title in 2010. Winning four of their last six matches, the Timbers U-23s finished the regular season in second place in the Northwest Division with a record of 10-4-2 (32pts). As the division’s second seed, Portland would play Kitsap for a fourth time during the season, but this time, in a divisional playoff match with a trip to the Western Conference tournament on the line. In a divisional playoff match on July 15, the Timbers U-23s and Pumas met at Gladstone High School for the second time in seven days. The Timbers U-23s benefitted from the quickest goal scored in team history, coming from Sherrod in the second minute, and a 69th-minute winner from midfielder Roberto Farfan in his first goal of the season to claim a 2-1 win. The Timbers U-23s joined Sounders FC U-23 as the two Northwest Division representatives in the Western Conference tournament. The Timbers U-23s took the pitch against the Southwest Divisionchampion Ventura County Fusion in the Western Conference semifinals – a match featuring two of the conference’s top defensive and offensive teams. Scoreless through regulation, Fusion second-half sub Victor Munoz provided the game’s lone goal in the 93rd minute to push the home side to a 1-0 win, ending the Timbers U-23s’ 2012 campaign. By the numbers A few highlights and notable moments from the Timbers U-23s 2012 PDL season: 24,026 – Overall, the Timbers U-23s set a new team record for season attendance at 24,026 (3,003/per game), which ranked second among the 73-team PDL. 8,174 – The Timbers U-23s played host to a pair of Health & Fitness School Days during the 2012 season, with each being attended by recordsetting numbers. On May 24, the Timbers U-23s first broke the PDL’s single-game attendance record with 8,029 fans; the record was set by the Fresno Fuego on April 29, 2011, at 7,853. Then, eight days later, the Timbers U-23s would further their new record as 8,174 fans attended a 2-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-23s on June 1. 50 – The 2012 campaign featured head coach Jim Rilatt’s 50th match as the head coach of the Timbers U-23s on May 19 in a 4-1 win over Victoria. 35 – The Timbers U-23s shared the lead in the Northwest Division in goals, registering 35 goals in 16 games. Additionally, the team conceded the fewest goals in the division, allowing only 16 goals during the regular season. 11 – Forward Mark Sherrod scored 11 goals during the season and became just the third player in team history to score 10 or more goals in a season, joining Brent Richards (2010) and Ryan Youngblood (2009) in

accomplishing the feat. 8 – Midfielder Cam Vickers paced the team with eight assists, finishing in a four-way tie for third in the PDL in assists. His eight assists set the Timbers U-23s’ record for assists in a season. 4 – Forward Erik Hurtado strung together four-straight games with a goal from June 2-25, one short of matching the Timbers U-23s’ mark for consecutive games with a goal. 3 – Among Sherrod’s 11 goals, he scored a hat trick May 19 in a 4-1 win over Victoria Highlanders FC. The result moves the Timbers U-23s (8-3-2, 26pts) into a two-way tie for first place with the Kitsap Pumas in a tightly-contested Premier Development League Northwest Division; just two points separates the top four teams in the division. Portland pulled level at 1-1 on Sherrod’s goal in the 23rd minute and the team’s backline held Victoria to just three shots in the second half to preserve the draw. Highlanders FC (3-6-4, 13pts) claimed the lead on Gorman’s team-best fifth goal of the season. Timbers U-23s goalkeeper Spencer Richey punched out a corner kick, but the ball fell to Gorman near the top of the box. On a full volley, Gorman blasted home the opening strike just six minutes in. A free kick by midfielder Andrew Ribeiro led to Portland’s equalizer in the 23rd minute. Ribeiro bent the re-start around the Victoria wall, but was parried by goalkeeper Elliot Mitrou. The rebound fell to Sherrod inside the box and he deposited his ninth goal of the season into the back of the net. The Timbers U-23s return home to face Washington and Kitsap in their

Gorman's goal was a cracker. The free kick that the Timbits scored from was unmerited. The MLS U23 teams are taking this competition much more seriously than they did last year (ie fewer youngsters playing). The Portland Timbers U-23s have reached the mid-season point of their 2012 Premier Development League season, presented by Billups Worldwide. The first half of the campaign featured a positive start as the team works towards a playoff berth. The Timbers U-23s got off to a roaring start in 2012, winning their first five league matches. During that opening stretch, the team had scored 15 goals, recorded three shutouts and conceded just two goals. Portland set a new PDL attendance record on June 1, as 8,174 fans watched a 2-1 comeback win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-23 at JELD-WEN Field as part of Health and Fitness School Day, presented by Providence Sports Care Center. It was the Timbers U-23s fifth victory in a row, and momentum was high. “We had a nice stretch of home games, which did help,” said midfielder Cam Vickers of the winning streak. “Everyone gelled together and with the stretch of road games following everyone was looking to bring that success on the road, especially against some top teams.” However the five-game winning streak made way for a set of back-to-back losses to Seattle Sounders FC U-23 and Washington Crossfire and a draw to close out the first half of the season. Despite the setback, the Timbers U-23s sit just one point out of first place in the Northwest Division eight games into the season. “The players are not here for their own selves, which is very helpful,” said head coach Jim Rilatt. “They’ve had some bad luck, but they still hang

together. I think that helps us.” The Timbers U-23s have seen production from top to bottom on their roster, with 10 different players having scored. Two players who have been recognized for their individual performances are forward Mark Sherrod and midfielder Eric Miller. Sherrod was named the PDL Player of the Week in Week 3, while Miller was a recent call-up to the U.S. U-20 National Team. As the Timbers U-23s open the final half of the season on Sunday against North Sound SeaWolves FC, they will look to continue to bond as a unit both on and off the field as they work towards getting back their moment in effort to achieve a common goal – reaching the playoffs. “Getting back to how we were at the beginning of the season is what we want to focus on next,” said Sherrod. “I think we veered off a little bit, but I know we’ll get there.” Feature

PORTLAND, Ore. – United Soccer Leagues announced Thursday that Portland Timbers U-23s forward Mark Sherrod was named honorable mention for the Premier Development League Team of the Week for Week 7. Sherrod scored his seventh goal of the year as part of a thrilling 4-3 loss to Cascadia-rival Seattle Sounders FC U-23 on June 22. Earlier this season, Sherrod was selected as the PDL Player of the Week for Week 3, after becoming just the fourth player in Timbers U-23s history to record a hat trick in a 4-1 win over Victoria Highlanders FC on May 19. Written by Jason Harrel 11/9/2011 3:56:00 PM Overview The 2011-12 men's basketball season is here and there is a new mindset in town as the Wolves welcome in new head coach Brady Bergeson. He looks to take the reigns and lead his new team to the ultimate prize, a Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship. Bergeson will be at the helm of a team that features seven returners and seven newcomers. The returners The Wolves will be led again by the senior guard duo of Blair Wheadon and Kyle Long. Last year, both started every game while averaging 18.2 ppg and 13.0 ppg, respectively. Tarance Glynn, Kolton Nelson, Jordan Freelander, Jamaal Veal, and Kris White will also be in the mix. “Bottom line is if you have experienced student-athletes that come in and shoulder some leadership and responsibility,” said men's basketball head coach Brady Bergeson. “It really helps the young players adapt quickly to what's going on.” Newcomers To round out the remaining roster spots coach Bergeson brought in four freshman and three transfers. Ryan Hoeft, Nathaniel Carter, Andy Avgi and Brian McGill represent the freshman class. However, Avgi and Carter are expected to redshirt this season. Brandon Troxel, Cody Peters, and James Gehring, come in as transfers. “We got freshman that will be part of our core unit for years to come,” said Bergeson. “These players have adapted quickly. We have tough, physical kids that we have brought in.” Strengths Western will be relying on its experience early in the season to get off on the right foot. The Wolves will bring back studentathletes which ranked in the top 10 of the GNAC rankings in multiple categories, including shooting, rebounding, assists, and steals. By having this experience, it leaks over to helping out the newcomers and getting them not only acquainted with the team, but also ready to showcase to the fans and league just what they are capable of. “We have four perimeter players returning who had a substantial amount of playing time last season,” said Bergeson. “We look to go nine or 10 deep, and that starts with experience.” The Great Northwest Athletic Conference Last season, Western Oregon finished sixth with a record of 8-10 (13-16 overall). This season the Wolves have been picked to place fifth in the preseason GNAC coaches poll, as the league is once against loaded with talent from top to bottom. “I am really impressed with the conference,” said Bergeson. “I am also really impressed with the level of coaching in this league. There are four new coaches including myself so you don't know exactly what you will see from some of those teams.

“Traveling in this conference is a beast, and you have to have a certain level of grit in your staff and players,” Bergeson continued. Schedule Before the Wolves will see their first GNAC opponent however, they have a slate of other challenges awaiting them. They open the season in Hawaii at the GNAC/PacWest Challenge. “We play two tough teams in their home state,” said Bergeson. “Early season games are difficult because no one knows what the team will do.” After the GNAC/PacWest tournament, Western Oregon will head back to Monmouth to play their first home games of the season. It will get ready to take part in the WOU/Phoenix Inn D2 Shootout, where it will see action against Cal State Eastbay and Augustana. “The second tournament will be great,” said Bergeson. “We will get to play in front of our hometown crowd.” Even though the Wolves will have played four games at this moment, they will still have one more tournament to take part in before GNAC play begins. Their third and final tournament they will take part in will be the Capital City Classic, which will be held in Salem, Ore. The Wolves will see games against Corban and the winner of Willamette or Montana Tech. This season the Wolves will also be able to showcase their skill against a Division I school. Blair Wheadon may not have always 'wowed' fans with his numbers but when he walks away from Western Oregon after this season he will go down as not only one of the greatest Wolves to ever put on a uniform, but one of the greatest in the history of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Congratulations to the graduates!!!

On Saturday, Wheadon recorded 19 points by hitting 5-of-7 three-pointers, to become just the 12th student-athlete in the history of the conference to eclipse the 1,000 point barrier in GNAC games. [Box score] MONMOUTH, Ore. – Kyle Long scored 17 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds to lead the Western Oregon men's basketball team to a 67-56 win over Northwest Nazarene, on Thursday, Feb. 23rd. WOU (18-8, 11-6 GNAC) trailed 33-30 at halftime but put together a 28-7 surge in the second half to take control of the game. The Wolves would hold NNU (12-13, 6-11 GNAC) to just 30 percent shooting in the period, after the Crusaders connected on 52 percent of their shots in the opening half. During the second half, Blair Wheadon became the GNAC's all-time steals leader. He had three steals to go along with 15 points and five rebounds, take over the GNAC record with 213 career swipes. His record-breaking steal came early in the second half when he stole the ball away on Jonathan Hawkins' pass. The Wolves' second half surge was fueled by their ability to control the boards. After losing the battle of the boards 15-13 in the first half, WOU outrebounded NNU 24-13 in the second half, which included 10 on the offensive glass. The Wolves also outscored the Crusaders 20-1 in points off turnovers. Keith Moilanen led the Crusaders with 16 points and JB Pillard had eight rebounds. The Wolves will close out their regular season on Saturday, Feb. 25th at 2:00 p.m. This game will also be senior day, as the Wolves say goodbye to five seniors before the game.
