For the class of 2021, here are the top 15 things to do after graduation.

With graduation fast approaching, it’s finally time to start brainstorming those exciting summer plans. As the stress of school starts to fade away, students everywhere know that summer is the perfect time to relax and recoup. Not everyone has something planned, so to get the ball rolling, here are the top 15 things to do after graduation: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Take time for some good old rest and recovery. Splurge and treat oneself to a favorite meal or go out for drinks. Throw a graduation party with friends or family. Celebrate graduating and this new chapter of life with a haircut, outfit, piercing or tattoo. 5. Alternatively, buy that item that’s been sitting in the online shopping cart for weeks. 6. Dump out that backpack, toss out those notebooks and ditch the old textbooks. 7. Check out concerts, festivals, art shows, fairs or markets to attend. 8. Be sure to look online for garage sales or the latest thrift stores. 9. Have a picnic, lunch or coffee at the park for some solid alone time.

10. Try exploring hobbies or activities that previously didn’t have time or energy for. 11. Spend time in nature, now that the sun is out and Zoom lectures have finally ended. 12. Read a book for pleasure, with no deadline to finish it and no need to annotate it. 13. If needed, update LinkedIn and other job profiles to stay notified of work opportunities. 14. Volunteer with organizations to gain new experiences and get involved in the community. 15. Catch up on TV shows, movies, music albums and podcasts that may have been missed over the course of the year.

Alternative ways to celebrate graduation Natalie Dean | Entertainment Editor | ndean17@wou.edu Commencement may look different this year, but it’s no biggie, since everyone knows that the real fun starts with the graduation party. It can be rewarding to take the time to recognize the huge accomplishment of graduating college, and to honor the journey along the way. Whether it’s a traditional get-together or something more lowkey, here are just a few alternative and fun ways people can commemorate their time in college: • • • • • •

Safely destroy old papers and assignments with a paper shredder, or use them as kindling for a bonfire. Make sure to grab the s’mores. Past assignments and syllabi can also be used to make a papier mâché pinata, which can be filled with candy and other treats. It also doubles as a great stress reliever. Snag some polaroid or disposable film cameras to use throughout the graduation ceremony or the after party. Write a letter to oneself about current life happenings, goals, dilemmas or advice for the future. Save the letter to be opened a few years later, or when the time feels right. Sell old textbooks for some extra cash or donate them to students or organizations in need. Print out photos taken over the years to decorate walls or add them to a photo album. @thewesternhowl

• • • • • •

Create a collage or a memory board ⏤ crafted from any pictures, movie or concert tickets. Decorate it with text to recount all the fun memories from the years. Write thank you notes or personalized letters to people who have made college life memorable. Grab drinks with friends to reminisce on the best, and worst, times from in college. Have a night in and cook dinner with friends or family for more of a casual get-together, or keep it simple and order delivery. Create a mixtape of the songs that sum up one’s college experience, or make a graduation party playlist. Make a list of future plans, ideas and goals, or create a summer bucket list to get the ball rolling.

PARTY LIKE IT’S 2021

Get inspired with these five DIY graduation party ideas

Allison Vanderzanden Lifestyle Editor | avanderzanden19@wou.edu Time to celebrate graduation with a graduation party. Whether virtual or in person, here are five ideas — from decorations to food to activities — for an exciting do-it-yourself party. Graduation cap cupcake toppers: Don’t forget dessert — glue a two inch by two inch square of black construction paper to the bottom of a Ferrero Rocher candy wrapper. Flip it over, then create a tassel using some embroidery floss or a prebought miniature tassel. Attach the tassel with hot glue or a sticker, then place the candy on top of a cupcake.

Photo booth: With a beautiful backdrop and fun props, a photo booth can be an exciting activity for all party guests. Decorate a wall or fence with balloons, streamers or a banner, or hang up a solid colored sheet for a sleek look. Wooden pallets also make a chic, rustic backdrop. As for props, use hats from around the house, buy some 2021 glasses or make customizable text bubbles with construction paper glued to a wooden skewer. Tassel garland: Make some simple decorations with tissue paper and string.

Serve favorite snacks and party favors on a table decked out in DIY decor.

Cut out many long, thin strips of colored tissue paper, then group the strands in sets of three or four. Fold the tissue paper sets in half, and lay the string in between the folds. Tie a knot with the string around the fold, then add some optional decorative tape to resemble the tassel clip. Continue down the line to create as much garland as desired. Well-wishes jar: Simply decorate a glass container that invites guests to share some words of wisdom for the graduate on small pieces of paper. Alternatively, guests can write down their favorite

memories with the graduate. In either case, it makes a heartfelt memento that the student can appreciate in the coming years. Zoom backgrounds: Having a virtual party? Share a file of photos with guests that they can use as backgrounds on their Zoom call. Generic photos of graduation caps or balloons are great, or make them more personal by taking photos of the graduate. For example, have the student hold one arm out to the side so guests can pose for a screenshot next to them.

HONORING OUTSTANDING STUDENT LEADERS AND GRADUATES

Two honors students are awarded the Julia McCulloch-Smith and Delmer Dewey for graduating class of 2021 Sydney Carpenter News Editor | scarpenter18@wou.edu Despite the year’s challenges, student leaders at Western rose to the occasion advocating for student rights and justice while maintaining a high grade point average. In the honors program, the highest award a student can receive is the Julia McCulloch-Smith and Delmer Dewey, which was founded in 1991. This year, graduating seniors Joshua Salsbury ⏤ an applied math major ⏤ and NJ Johnson ⏤ Associated Students of Western Oregon University President and a public policy and administration major ⏤ were awarded this high honor. “The students of (Western) did something beyond impressive,” said Johnson, “by finding the support you need, sticking through the year, making your voices heard and making the year work for you as best as you could.” Both candidates are advocates for the human condition and building a strong support system in order to complete the upcoming years of college as a strong student. “I hope that one thing people will

take away from this past year is that someone can have many challenges and difficulties in their life,” said Salsbury. “I have seen students and professors go out of their way to be more understanding and accommodating for each other, so my advice is to build a strong support system. Challenges in life won’t go away after the pandemic, but maybe our ability to deal with them will be better.” As student leaders, who were involved within areas such as the food pantry, university housing, the ambassador program and ASWOU, the candidates have interacted with various students on campus to try and make Western a better place. On Student Engagement’s Instagram post announcing the winner, Johnson commented on his ability to work collaboratively and problem solve, even when groups of people have separate end goals. “Every experience can be a learning experience if you allow it to be,” said Johnson.

Transportation restrictions and decreased strays animals limit pet availability in local shelters Sydney Carpenter News Editor | scarpenter18@wou.edu

30% of all Americans were reported to have adopted a pet early on during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Insurance Research Council’s October 2020 report. Oregonian pet shelters are currently battling a pet deficit leading into the year 2021 after many Oregonians adopted outside of local shelters. By adopting stray animals, the stray intake was decreased by an estimated 15% and the restricted travel implemented early on in the pandemic decreased pet transfers by 36%, according to shelteranimalscount. org. “It has been consistent throughout our region that there is a higher demand for adoptable dogs than there is a supply

@thewesternhowl

for shelters,” said Development and Community Engagement Director of the Willamette Humane Society Erin Weldon. “We often direct potential adopters to other local shelters and rescues if we do not have the animal supply to meet their needs.” As new pet owners continue to acquire new furry friends, other industries such as veterinarian clinics have been overloaded with clientele as a result of some practices closing and the wave of new owners coming in. The Polk County Central Veterinary Clinic located in Monmouth was one practice that was forced to close its doors. Continued on back

CELEBRATING

Black Student Union and LGBTQ+ community host graduation events honoring this year’s graduates

WOU

Sydney Carpenter News Editor | scarpenter18@wou.edu

Although Western will celebrate all graduates starting June 11 and ending June 13, the LGBTQ+ community and the Black Student Union on campus are offering a more personalized and community centralized opportunity to celebrate their individual members and their achievements. Lavender Graduation: This event is dedicated to people within the LGBTQ+ community, as lavender is an important feature within their history. Originating back to Nazi Germany, lavender combines the pink and black triangles used to identify gay men and lesbians as poltical prisoners in concentration camps, but now civil rights movements have combined them to represent pride and community, according to hrc.org. Instead of being in person this year, the activity will be hosted over Zoom on June 10 at 6 p.m. The ceremony will feature a keynote speaker and master of ceremonies. In addition, graduates can have a person make a speech on their behalf. All lavender graduates will receive: • rainbow tassel • cords • certificate Students who do not want to participate in the ceremony but would still like to receive a tassel, cords and certificate are encouraged to email habermam@wou.edu.

Black Graduation: This ceremony celebrates the accomplishments of Black and African American students on campus. “The ceremony reinforces the bonds of scholarship and extends the sense of community,” according to Western’s website. “The intimate ceremony is representative of Black and African American culture and culminates with a Kente Stole presentation.” Similar to last year, the Union plans on hosting the ceremony on the Marching Order website. The site will include: • a special keynote presentation • slides honoring each graduate • words from President Rex Fuller • singing of the Black National Anthem Each graduate will be sent a certificate in addition to a Kente cloth, which is native to Ghana according to Western’s website. The link for the ceremony will be made available on June 12 at 3 p.m.

Letter from the Editor Staying motivated through the Volume 3 slog Cora McClain Editor-in-Chief | howleditor@wou.edu Hey Western, here we are at the end of a difficult and tumultuous year of ups and downs. Serving as editor-in-chief for the past year has most definitely dwarfed the struggles of my first year. From struggling with 45% budget deficits to reducing staff and our production capacity, the 2020-21 academic year has been anything but a breeze. The hardest part in all of this? Staying motivated. There’s a term that my friends and I use when we have to get through something boring, difficult or sluggish — slog. The most dangerous thing about slogs are that they kill motivation. I can’t think of a better term to describe how I have felt this year. It’s been a slog. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you, Western, about how difficult it has been

to stay motivated while staying confined and isolated from the community for the past year. There have been countless nights when producing and posting stories has seemed like it’s all for nothing. Without printing, having physical copies or seeing the community interacting with “The Western Howl,” it seemed as if all of the staff ’s work wasn’t going anywhere. I know this isn’t true, Western, but the doubt is still there. Luckily, I had the support of an amazing interim adviser who made these struggles a bit easier. Encouraging that the Howl was making an impact, making sense of budgetary issues and always checking in, he helped me to slog through and keep producing every week. There were times in which I wanted to

quit and give in to the doubts; every time, he encouraged me and kept me from being defeated by my self-doubt. Thank you Patrick for giving me the motivation to keep going. I was also lucky enough to have a determined staff who kept producing and working through their own slogs. Often working remotely, the Howl’s staff adapted to every challenge that came our way. My editors amazed me with their continual stream of content, I could not have continually found stories or written as much as they did. Thank you Allie, Natalie and Sydney for your stability. My designer worked each week to design beautiful issues, layouts, pages and graphics, and I am grateful that he was here to keep the spirit of printed issues as we moved to a digital only format. Thank you Kyle for your creativity. My photo editor made everyone’s jobs much easier by taking visually appealing photos and taking responsibility off of the rest of the staff, including me. Thank you Kiara for your relief. My digital media manager made everything before matter — without her, Western, you couldn’t even be reading what I am writing — running our website means that it’s thanks to her that the Howl is still going and can make any sort of impact. Thank you Stephanie for your persistence. Lastly, my managing editor, not only would the Howl have fallen apart without her help and support, but I would have too. Thank you Rylie for your diligence. Once again, thank you to my amazing

7

staff, thank you for giving me the motivation to keep going. Without you, there would be no Howl. In my letter from vol. 2 issue 25 of “The Western Howl,” I urged you, Western, to “surround yourself with people you can depend on.” Once again, I cannot stress this piece of advice enough. I’ll even add onto it. When you find yourself slogging through life, with no motivation, look to the people around you for motivation. Encourage one another, be understanding of someone’s slogs, and support each other. Whatever slog you are going through, Western, you aren’t alone. If you are finding it hard to stay motivated, know that the Howl and I understand, and we believe in you. Whether it’s graduating, job searching, saving money, having a creativity block, or working on your mental health, you can do it. If I can get through a slog, I know that you can too, Western. I am going to use this motivation as momentum to start strong again for Volume 4. Yes, Western, I will be returning as your editor-in-chief for a third year. As vaccination numbers have been rising, I am hopeful that my motivation will strengthen as we can all begin to re-assimilate into our new normal for the 2021-2022 academic year. The only way we can do this is by doing our part. As of this issue, I am fully vaccinated and glad to have done my part. So I urge you, Western, get your vaccinations — help end the slog we’ve all been going through.

From left to right: Kyle Morden, Kiara Wehrenberg, Allison Vanderzanden, Rylie Horrall, Cora McClain, Sydney Carpenter, Stephanie Moschella.

DOG DEFICIT

“A lot of staff are on the verge of burnout,” said Supervising Veterinarian Chief of Staff Dr. Thomas Keck of Dallas Animal Clinic. “Talking with these (clients) … a lot of them didn’t have much experience with dogs and cats or had no experience.” Dr. Keck said the underlying issue with the new adoptions is pet owners making the decision on a whim. He cited examples of owners living in apartments not expecting labrador puppies to grow so large and take up so much space. Another issue frequently encountered at the clinic is lack of behavioral training; in the United States, a canine bites one out of every 69 people according to woofdog. org. “We stress obedience for dogs is very important,” said Keck. “It’s important that (dogs) are good and safe members of the community. If (new pet owners) can’t control them, we have a problem.” Keck goes on to explain that training animals during the pandemic to be accustomed to people has been challenging, because of private trainers canceling private lessons, while other public classes have followed suit. However, some facilities, such as the Willamette Humane Society, have been offering online classes to new owners. “These are helpful because they allow behaviorists to view the animal’s

behaviors in their natural environment.” explained Weldon. “These are helpful because they allow behaviorists to view the animal’s behaviors in their natural environment … if a dog barks when the doorbell rings, it’s easier to troubleshoot that behavior over a Zoom call than try to replicate it at the shelter.” At this time, the Humane Society has returned to hosting in person, socially distanced classes and welcomes all owners to participate. In an effort to continue to better educate new pet owners and keep the community safe, the Dallas Animal Clinic requests that all new owners have their furry friends microchipped. To learn more about being a pet owner, visit akc.org. Additionally, it should be noted that recent conversations of people returning animals to shelters have not been checked for authenticity. “We have not seen a spike in returns due to the pandemic, and there is no data from us to support this claim,” said Weldon. “In conversations with other animal shelters across the country through our membership in the Association for Animal Welfare Advancement, they also have not seen evidence of returned animals adopted during the pandemic.” Photo by Kiara Wehrenberg

Marion County Dog services saw a 30% decrease in canine intake in 2020.
