Action stations: All eyes and cameras were aloft on Saturday as the Tyabb Air Show marked the centenary of the start of the Great War in 1914. More Yanni pictures on Page 56.

Aerial salute to war vets By Chris Brennan AVIATION enthusiasts descended on Western Port in their thousands for the biennial Tyabb Air Show at Peninsula Aero Club on Sunday. Officials estimated visitor numbers at more than 8500, making it one of the biggest turnouts in recent years. This year’s event, dubbed “A Salute to Veterans, featured a drive-past parade of dozens of ex-servicemen and women from RSL clubs across the peninsula to mark the centenary of the start of the Great War in 1914. Visitors also paid tribute to murdered

Tyabb schoolboy Luke Batty, observing a minute’s silence at 11am before releasing hundreds of yellow balloons in honour of Luke’s favourite colour. The action – and weather – heated up in the afternoon as planes from almost every war Australia has been involved in took to the skies. Aircraft in action covered almost a century of aviation history, from the First World War Sopwith Camel that first saw service on the Western Front in 1917 to the RAAF’s current frontline fighter jet, the F/A-18 Hornet, which performed a flyover in tandem

The ear-splitting appearance of the RAAF F/A-18 Hornett was the most talked about event of the show, producing gasps from most visitors but tears of fright from many of the younger visitors as it tore across the sky at almost 1000km/h. The Hornet was flown by Number 3 Squadron commanding officer Wing Commander Tim Alsop, who grew up on the peninsula and learned to fly at Tyabb. He performed a number of precision manoeuvres. a “missing man formation by Australia combat aircraft in honour of missing airforce personnel. Peninsula Aero Club president Peter Bernardi said organisers were “over the moon at the success of the event. “We were really knocked out, he said. “It was a fantastic day and everyone had a great time. There were a lot of clapping and cheering, especially for the F/A-18 Hornett and the missing man flyover. He said show proceeds would go to volunteer groups, including peninsula CFAs, Legacy and sporting clubs.
