Community choir finds harmony in diversity A COMMUNITY choir is doing more than just making beautiful music on the Mornington Peninsula. The Wallaroo Community Choir provides a place for people to feel a sense of belonging, welcomes all members of the community regardless of age, gender, disability, housing situation and singing experience. About 40 people of all ages have participated in a 10-week program funded by the Mornington Peninsula Shire and coordinated by community mental health organisation, Mentis Assist, and Good Shepherd Australia New Zealand. The organisers say community choirs improve people’s confidence, mental health and social skills by providing a place where they can express themselves, make friends and feel a part of a team in a fun and inclusive environment. “The choir offers a space for people to feel a part of their community by providing social connections through a shared love of music, conductor Rupert Balint-Smith said. Mentis Assist CEO Terry Palioportas spoke of the impact community programs, such as the choir, can have. “Music is a powerful thing. We've seen time and time again what it can do for mental health and bringing people together from all walks of life in our community. Details: mentisassist.org.au

State to manage port Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au MANAGEMENT of the Port of Hastings will come under state government control on 1 July next year. The government has decided against renewing its port management lease with the LINX Cargo Group, owned by asset manager Brookfield, and the Port of Hastings Development Author-
ity will take over as port manager. “The Port of Hastings will continue to be very much open for business throughout this transition period and well into the future as a key bulk port for Victoria, the authority’s CEO Malcolm Geier said. “The Port of Hastings is one of Victoria's key bulk ports and as Victoria’s deepest bulk port offers significant development opportunities. “The Port of Hastings Development
Authority will increase its staffing and employ a workforce of a similar size to that presently employed by LINX and the authority to ensure a smooth transition of responsibilities on 1 July 2017. The 10 staff employed by LINX at Stony Point have been told that their jobs will be advertised by the authority. It will be the first influx of new staff for the authority since the loss of dozens of jobs in the wake of Labor’s at 2014 election win and its decision to

Timelines for any expansion of the port are not likely to be known until next May when Infrastructure Victoria releases recommendations on the location of the state’s second container terminal. Previous state governments – Liberal and Labor – have backed Hastings as a site for a new container port, but the current government changed tack and nominated Bay West in Port Phillip as its preferred location. Winery can expand – shire Neil Walker neil@mpnews.com.au THE expansion of a winery at Merricks North has been given the go ahead despite conflicting with state regulations about overdevelopment in green wedge areas. A 7-4 majority of councillors at a public council meeting on 28 November agreed with shire planning services manager David Bergin’s assertion that the Willow Creek Vineyard had “existing usage rights” to increase patronage numbers at its Merricks North winery from a maximum of 150 in line with green wedge regulations to about 280 people at any one time. The maximum number of people allowed on site at a venue situated in a green wedge is 150 people for locations of less than 40 hectares. The Willow Creek Vineyard sits on 18 hectares. Cloud Investments plans to build a $26 million luxury hotel with 46 rooms and two restaurants at 166 Balnarring Rd, Merricks North. Cr Antonelli Celi was an enthusiastic supporter of the planning application at the council meeting, unlike some of her colleagues who had reservations about the proposal. “There were councillors here that went to the tourism update the other night. We all loved it. We all nodded in agreement. We had the good food served to us. We all loved to wine and dine,” Cr Celi said. “Not a problem to put a smile on when we’re out there with all of those wonderful business owners who are doing really well in our hinterland, but I can’t
be as two-faced as that and I will look at each case on its merits as well.” Cr Celi said the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal would ultimately decide whether the winery expansion could proceed arguing that council should support “flourishing agri-tourism businesses in the hinterland and across our Green Wedge zne on the Mornington Peninsula that contribute significantly to our economic development across the peninsula”. “We’re dealing with people’s livelihoods here,” she said. Councillors Hugh Fraser and David Gill questioned Mr Bergin about existing usage rights of the business. “The Victoria planning provisions did change a couple of years ago to allow additional people or patron numbers within sites,” Mr Bergin said. “It is a site that has to be 40 hectares but, if this site was 40 hectares, they could have up to 310 plus and the plus refers to no limit on a wine tasting facility.” Town planner Phil Gleeson, of Urbis consultants, representing Cloud Investments, urged councillors to back the business expansion. “This proposal provides a significant opportunity for tourism and accommodation within the Mornington Peninsula Shire and ensures that the investment is well received within this community,” Mr Gleeson said. Cr Bryan Payne said it was important for investors to get a return on their investment. “In doing so, it will create employment for the area.” Cerberus ward councillor Kate Roper, whose ward includes Merricks North,
expressed concerns about neighbours hearing late-night noise and voted against the proposal. The new hotel and restaurants are due to be completed in January or February next year. The business owner is also seeking to change opening hours to 8am-10pm seven days a week. Opening times are restricted until 5.30pm on weekdays at present. Cr Gill said council needed to urgently update its Green Wedge policy and said it was unfortunate the land size at Willow Creek Vineyard was 18 hectares, less than half of the minimum 40-hectare size needed for higher patronage numbers. “It brings great shame on this council that we haven’t defined what we want to have in our Green Wedge zone to the extent where an 18-hectare proposal can be entertained. “We don’t have the ability to have a planning committee because even a notice of motion is rejected by the CEO when I try to raise this issue. I don’t know where to go with the issue.” Crs Simon Brooks, Celi, Rosie Clark, Julie Edge, Sam Hearn, Frank Martin and Payne voted to approve the planning application. The mayor Cr Bev Colomb and Crs Fraser, Gill and Roper voted against the application. The matter will be heard at VCAT on 26 February after the applicant applied to the tribunal since council was unable to make a deliberation on the planning application within 60 days due to the timing of October’s council elections. Council meetings are suspended in the lead-up to elections.

Brightening the season CHRISTMAS is looming and the tireless volunteers at Peninsula Mums for Families in Need are bracing themselves for high demand. The charity service, established by mother-of-three Jodie Harris, makes Christmas special for disadvantaged people in the Frankston/ Mornington Peninsula region. In four years, demand for food, clothing and essential goods has grown to such an extent, the charity has been forced to find a new home and now works out of warehouse in Seaford that comes with a large
rent bill each month. The volunteers now wrap about 2000 presents and 300 food hampers for families in need every Christmas, which are then distributed by more than 65 charities and welfare agencies. But Ms Harris, who is supported by a crew of volunteers, said donations were always needed, especially at Christmas. Anyone wanting to help the charity or donate non-perishable food, items suitable for presents, and household essentials can find all the details at msfin.org.au

Creek fish deaths ‘natural’ Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au DOZENS of dead fish have been turning up in Merricks Creek over the past few weeks. “Most of the fish carcasses, 30-40cm adult black bream, are on the creek margins to the west of the Balnarring Beach road bridge,” Barry Greer, of Balnarring, said. “I have contacted Melbourne Water and the Balnarring Foreshore Committee but both entities insist that it’s a natural event and there’s no cause for concern. “I have spent much time around the creek and have never seen this number of dead fish in the creek or estuary before. The strange part is that only these large bream seem to be affected.” Mr Greer said he saw 13 dead fish from the bridge on Wednesday and 12 on the Tuesday. “They were not the same fish,” he said. “Foxes would take any leftover dead ones. It’s an ongoing thing.” Mr Greer said the creek had been allowed to fill with sediment. “The water’s only a foot deep in some places
and they say they won’t dredge because that would disturb nitrates and heavy metals.” Melbourne Water Waterways and land manager south east John Woodland blamed natural phenomena for the deaths. “Unfortunately, large numbers of fish die from time to time in our creeks due to natural causes, such as low oxygen levels, particularly during the summer months,” he said. “This can happen in most waterways this time of year and does not necessarily reflect the health of the waterway.” Mr Greer predicted Melbourne Water’s response: “They’ll say it is a natural occurrence but really it’s as a result of a disrupted environment, with much building work causing mud to flow down the drains. I don’t think they are
taking it seriously.” The EPA says it is investigating reports of fish dying in Merricks Creek. The Melbourne Water-sponsored Merricks Creek Estuary Investigation and Options Analysis Report, published in October last year, advises against trying to prevent sea grass entering the estuary; trying to clear it from the estuary, or from clearing it from Balnarring Beach, saying it is natural and clearing could endanger some species, such as the hooded plover. The report, by Alluvium Consulting Australia Pty Ltd, explored the processes creating the “rotten egg gas” odour, fish kills and shallowing of the estuary. It concluded fish deaths were likely caused by a decline in dissolved oxygen in the water. This can be caused by either algal blooms or through a process in which hydrogen sulphide released into the water through decomposition of the sea grass is oxidised by the dissolved oxygen. Reports of large numbers of fish, crustaceans or eels that appear to be dead or struggling can be made to the EPA on 1300 372 842.

The grandmothers planned to join the rally outside St Pauls Cathedral, and then march to the Royal Botanic Gardens for a BYO picnic. There, speakers were to denounce federal government plans to send refugee children to the US.
PARKS Victoria is calling for feedback on a revised master plan for the future of Point Nepean National Park. The plan, based on a draft released in 2010, is expected to consider a wide range of options for the pristine coastal area, taking account of Point Nepean’s historic connections to Point Lonsdale, the marine national park, its occupation and use by Aborigines as well as “appropriate” commercial and educational developments. Late in 2014, just before the end of its term in office, the then Napthine Liberal government outraged environmentalists when it leased more than 64 hectares (158 acres) of the national park to Portsea property developer Point Leisure Group. The deal included historic buildings at the Point Nepean quarantine station. However, after its November 2014 election win the Andrews Labor government quickly abandoned the contract for a tourism and educationbased development on a 50-year lease. Earlier this year, Melbourne University was given the green light to build a research facility on the site of the old Quarantine Station. Wary of further fuelling unrest about the site’s future, in inviting discussion on the master plan, Energy, Environment and Climate Change minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the

government wants a plan that for the park that “reflects the communities’ views and respects the site’s rich history”. In July this year, Shelley Penn, hired as a consultant to facilitate the public consultation process, told The News that there was “resounding agreement that Point Nepean has the values of a national park, with high conservation values and varied and layered histories”. “Point Nepean can mean different things to many people. [Since the 2010 plan] there has been a richer appreciation of the significance of the park.” She said the adopted master plan would need to “give the community a sense of what could happen”. Ms Penn said the differences required to the 2010 master plan included enlarging the scope of the plan to include economics, the marine sanctuary, cultural and ecological links between Point Nepean and Point Lonsdale, maritime history (shipwrecks) and “what is unique about the national park and its potential attractions to visitors”. Parks Victoria will hold on-site information sessions at Portsea’s Badcoe Hall from 10am-3pm, Sunday 22 January 2017. The master plan is open for community consultation until 10 February 2017 and is expected to be finalised in mid- 2017. Details: parks.vic.gov.au/pointnepeanplan

Smartphones ‘fuel’ problem gamblers Liz Bell liz@mpnews.com.au THE popularity of smartphones has fuelled a rise in the number of problem gamblers who now have easy and instant access to online gambling sites, warns a Mornington peninsula counselling service. Alvin Efklidis, of Gamblers Help Southern, has warned that measures to reduce the harm of poker machines are not targeting the growing online sector. “In terms of problem gambling, poker machines are still the biggest form of gambling, but online gambling is rapidly growing and with the technology that’s available to everyone, such as mobile phones, it’s at the fingertips all the time, he said. “Most people are not aware of just how relentless the online bookmakers are, offering free bets to people who sign up and all sorts of offers and inducements. It’s very worrying. Gamblers Help Southern, the largest problem gambling service in Victoria, will make a submission to the state government’s just-opened review of gaming machine harm minimisation measures. Mr Efklidis said there was high demand for gambling counselling services in Frankston and on the Mornington Peninsula, where its “priority target group of tradies had a “cultural tendency to head to a drinking venue and gamble after work. But he said that at least 15 per cent of problems gamblers were online gamblers, and that more resources should be directed to reducing the harm of, and easy access to, that form of
Hastings RSL
gambling. Since the smartphone technology was introduced a few years ago, the temptation to gamble was now everywhere. The Victorian Department of Justice and Regulation consultation paper, which focuses on poker machine gambling, is asking for feedback on key areas of reducing gambling harm such as access to cash in gaming venues, cashless gaming and ticket-in, ticket-out systems, selfexclusion programs and regional and municipal limits on gaming machine numbers. Mr Efklidis said an important component of the review was the investigation of the training of venue staff to respond to problematic behaviours. He said some venue operators could “do more to embrace the concept of responsible gambling and actively promote this within their business. Details: responsiblegambling.vic.gov.au

Mural shows Carry-On spirit STUDENTS from Western Port Secondary College have created a mural which the Carry On organisation believes depicts the spirit of their organisation. It shows a digger reaching down to give a hand up to another digger, pulling him towards the sun. The school’s Outreach Education Program’s Helen Smith said she and colleague Miles Lindqvist invited students who were struggling at school, due to a range of reasons, to get involved with the Cool Store Rd, Hastings project. “We discuss the design with them, in line with the Carry On spirit, and the project result was amazing, she said. “Students had rostered hours but many stayed beyond school hours and into the twilight. Team leader of the students with disabilities program Katrina Mann says the common purpose brought the diverse group of students together. “Natural leadership emerged under Mr Lindqvist’s direction, as well as student Daniel D’arcy’s spray-painting skills and Jack McClernan’s problem-solving skills, Ms Smith said. “Dan Foot and Dylan Little were amazed by the view from the top of the scissor lift as they looked out towards the [Western Port] bay. Members of the Carry On group, patrons and parents praised and encouraged students as the mural progressed.
Wine wins THE small Capella Vineyard operated by Handpicked Wines, near Bittern, has continued its winning ways with its 2015 chardonnay being named best wine of the show at the 2016 Victorian Wines Show. The chardonnay was one of 800 entries in the show and the only of two wines to score 57 points out of a possible 60. The single vineyard wine also won trophies for Best Chardonnay and Best Table Wine – White. Working with chief winemaker Gary Baldwin, the 2015 chardonnay was made by Handpicked Wines’ senior winemaker Peter Dillon in his first vintage at Capella. Peter is a recent Len Evans Scholar. “Each year we get to know the vineyard better and our single vineyard wines are increasingly a reflection of the absolute best this special vineyard has to offer, vineyard manager Karl Roberts said.

Woman pulled from water at Cape Schanck were no signs of forced entry, police said.
A WOMAN washed off the rocks at Cape Schanck late Saturday night, 3 December, was rescued by members of her family with the help of SES, police, ambulance and Fisheries officers. The 35-year-old, of Hampton Park, was crab fishing when a big wave, exacerbated by the low tide, surged into the group, dragging her under in rough water, at about 10pm. The woman was pulled from the water by members of her family who called Triple 0 and began performing CPR. “She swallowed a fair bit of water,” Senior Sergeant Phillip Hulley, of Frankston police, said Monday last week. Intermittent phone coverage made pinpointing the exact location for rescue crews difficult, but Rosebud police managed to direct the air ambulance which winched down a paramedic. The woman was taken up the beach to a waiting ambulance which met the air ambulance at The National Golf Club for the trip to The Alfred hospital. On Thursday afternoon – five days after the incident – her condition was still being reported as “critical”.

Tools taken AN air-conditioner and tools valued at $1400 were stolen from an unlocked shed behind a vacant unit in Spring St, Hastings, overnight Monday 5 December. Thieves entered a back gate to steal the air-conditioner, hammer drill, socket set and other tools.
Summer safety THE Salvos will again create a summer safety zone in Main St, Mornington, on Saturdays, 11pm-3am. Mornington Mission Centre Lieutenant Sean Mapleback said the safety zone – to run until 25 February – was opposite the roundabout near the taxi rank. It features a bright yellow food van for those wanting something to eat, free bottle of water, lollies, place to sit, a listening ear or simply a time-out during their night out.

Port takeover
Riders injured
Continued from Page 1 While noting the May 2017 deadline for recommendations on a second container port, Infrastructure Victoria’s December report does mention further expansion to “the capacity of the Port of Melbourne through a range of measures, including the extension of berths, the use of Webb Dock exclusively for containers, relocating the car import/ export trade, landside investment and technology improvements at both Webb and Swanson docks”. “However, it should be noted that the most efficient way of accommodating growing container volumes in Victoria is to increase the capacity of the Port of Melbourne whenever this should be needed, and to the extent that this is feasible,” the report states. “Improvements in port productivity are anticipated to have positive impacts on businesses involved in international trade. By increasing the productivity of the supply chain, this option is also likely to positively affect general business costs and economic growth. “Expansion of the container capacity at the Port of Melbourne may attract larger vessels to the port, which may potentially increase safety risks, and the risks of disruption. Conversely, there may be limits to the size of ships that can access the port, due to the constraints of the Port Philip Heads access, or the West Gate Bridge.” Coincidentally, the Seraja Enam, reputed to be the largest container ship to come to Australia, sailed past Victoria to NSW to berth in Port Botany on Wednesday 23 November. A MORNINGTON man in his 30s injured his back while horseriding on Saturday 3 December, and was taken to Frankston Hospital where he was in a stable condition last week. He was one of 13 people hospitalised after weekend accidents involving horses – including two seriously injured. Nine of those accidents occurred Sunday 4 December; five involved children. The most seriously injured was a young girl hurt when a horse kicked over a gate which landed on the preschool aged girl in South Gippsland. She received serious head injuries and was flown by air ambulance to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a critical condition. Paramedics urge riders to wear a helmet and safety equipment. It’s also a good idea to carry a mobile phone to call for help. Those riding in unfamiliar areas can download the Emergency+ app which will give emergency crews an exact location.
Fire threat POLICE arrested a man after he poured petrol in the foyer of Frankston police station, 10.15am, Thursday, and threatened to set himself on fire. master Dick Cox, said the 14.8 metre draft Seraja Enam “is too deep to get through Port Phillip Heads let alone up the Yarra River and probably couldn’t get under the West Gate Bridge either”. He told The News on Friday that ships of that size could easily sail to an expanded Port of Hastings, although dredging would be required to provide a turning circle. Mr Cox said the dredging was “a fair amount, but not as much as [opponents to the port expansion] are saying”. In an article in the Tyabb & District Ratepayers, Business & Environmental Group newsletter, Mr Cox discusses maintaining “the position of Victoria having the premier container port in Australia?” “We obviously have to have a port with channels that can take vessels of this size safely every day, and that is not Port Phillip Heads at this point in time, can we make it so? Of course we can - engineers only have to follow the guidelines covered by the Internationally-accepted PIANC Report 121- 2014 Harbour Approach Channels Design Guidelines, which will probably tell them that the Port Phillip Entrance Channel has to be three times the width and two metres deeper than it is now. “No problem, the experts will be able to tell us how much extra water will come and go out through the Heads with the tide, make for wider beaches at low water. Mind you, where the high water mark will be is anyone’s guess. “Or simply build the berths at Hastings as the channels to Long Island Point can take vessels up to 15.8 metres draft now.”
The Western Port Whisperer WE have reached that point of the year once again, when the jolly old man in a red suit and a certain group of reindeer, make their presence known to us all. People have once again lost their minds and the decorations have started to line shop windows and local streets. Unfortunately, things at Whisperer HQ are a little different this year, and all is in a twirl because the decorations box cannot be located! This has put Mrs Whisperer in a bad mood, which is definitely not a good thing for anyone. Fortunately, tis’ the season of silliness, so such erratic behaviour is go-
ing unnoticed. Stay safe folks! *** THE world of social media is a relatively new domain in world history, and is even newer for The Whisperer who has just joined it for the first time. While it is apparent we are more connected as a society now, it is amazing to note the number of whingers there are in the world of social media. Having recently ‘added’ the Crib Point and Somerville and Surrounds Facebook pages, The Whisperer was horrified to note how many people whinge over such basic issues that aren’t even worthy of being a storyline on ‘Days of our Lives’ or ‘The

If the information cannot be traced to a source, usually it is a lie. *** THE Whisperer has put in his Christmas present order to Santa, but fears his sleigh may not be big enough to fit in a new armchair. As a long time supporter of local sporting clubs, The Whisperer’s wish list has a new armchair on it because there are two new teams in town which need supporting.
This festive season many of us will be reunited with a loved one we haven't seen for a while.

These teams, the Western Port Warriors and the new women’s team to be based out of Hastings, require as much support as possible and The Whisperers strongly urge all locals to get behind these teams once they hit the field. *** DID anybody hear excessive laughing the other night in the Western Port region? The Whisperer would like to take responsibility for this, because it was a natural reaction to hearing the news of the Council’s defeat at VCAT at the hands of the residents of Somers. Admittedly, this has been the most interesting David vs. Goliath battle
since David actually fought Goliath all those years ago. The Whisperer is not a fan of bullies, and always celebrates when they get their comeuppance. While residents of Western Port heard laughing the other night, residents of Rosebud reported hearing sulking and the sound of wounds being licked. The source of this noise was investigated, and the origins were traced back to Besgrove Street .*** Heard a Whisper? Let the Whisperer know: westernportwhisperer@gmail.com

Beware when bluebottles sail to shore VISITORS to the peninsula’s bay and ocean beaches may have noticed the prevalence of bluebottle jellyfish. The common bluebottle, Physalia utriculus, is smaller and less venomous than its Atlantic cousin Physalia physalis – or Portuguese man o’war – but it can still produce a painful sting. While they may look like a single marine creature they are actually colonial organisms known as siphonophores, with separate animals specialised for food capture, digestion, reproduction, and one that makes up the gas-filled float. The animals cannot function alone and the whole can only survive as a colony. The floats can grow up to 150mm long and tentacles to more than a metre. An intriguing feature is that half the colonies have floats aligned at 45 degrees to the right of the wind and half at 45 degrees to the left. It is surmised that this anatomical difference aids the survival of the species by ensuring only half of the colonies will face being marooned along the coast in the prevailing wind. The animals capture fish and small marine creatures by dragging their tentacles through the water and stinging and killing their prey. The powerful stinging cells, called nematocysts, line the tentacles and inject venomous neuro and muscle toxins, immobilising and killing their prey with rapid efficiency. When swimming or walking near the shoreline keep an eye out for them but don’t get too close. The sting is quite painful but it generally subsides in about half an hour. If stung, Surf Life Saving Australia recommends carefully removing any remaining tentacles and soaking the area in hot water or covering with ice packs. Do not scratch or rub the sting site.

ABOUT 140 people attended the Lions fundraising dinner for the Flinders CFA at the Flinders Hotel, Friday 2 December. Guest speaker dietitian Karen Inge, a director of the hotel, spoke on ‘Foods to eat to feel fit and fabulous’. More than $26,000 was raised for a new fire station to replace the 35-year-old building which does not meet present-day requirements. The amount adds to the $120,000 already raised from community donations. The new building and its façade are designed

to be less obtrusive in the streetscape than a corrugated iron industrial shed. The vision is for a building that can be used as a meeting space for residents and community groups. The fire tanker – also in its 30s – is due to be replaced by the CFA with a more recent, although still second-hand, tanker. Three vehicles are now required to service the community. CFA funding will provide for a standard vehicle station, with last week’s fundraising providing enough space for three vehicles, thus ‘future proofing’ the needs of the Flinders area.
Rain didn’t ease summer fire risk Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au FIRE danger periods for the Mornington Peninsula, Frankston and Kingston CFA districts will begin 1am, Monday 19 December. During this time fires cannot be lit in the open air without a written permit from CFA or a municipal fire prevention officer. Fire danger periods are based on local conditions and take into account fuel moisture, fuel loads, grassland curing, weather and rainfall. CFA District 8 operations manager Mark Kennedy said forecasts showed potential for an above average fire season, despite recent heavy rain and flooding in many parts of the state. “The rainfall we experienced in spring has produced a lot of growth which could very easily become a high fuel load throughout the summer season if not properly managed,” he said. “Reducing fuel loads will ensure that if a fire does break out, it has less chance of taking hold or spreading. “While CFA does everything it can, we look to members of the community to use common sense and take responsibility for preventing fires.” Mr Kennedy said there was still a “short window of opportunity” for owners to clean up their properties. “Out of control burn-offs and unregistered burn-offs have been a major headache for brigades,” he said. “You should avoid burning off when high winds are forecast – not only on the day you burn but for the days afterwards.” Councils will be able to provide more specific
burn-off restrictions, he said. CFA acting assistant chief officer Bryan Russell said this fire season CFA would be taking a zerotolerance approach to any fires resulting from negligent behaviour. “Expect any fire you start to be fully investigated by police,” he said. “Even if you have a permit to use fire over the fire danger period, make sure you read the conditions carefully. Failing to follow just one of those conditions may leave you open to prosecution.” “Can I or Can’t I?” information is available at cfa.vic.gov.au or by calling 1800 226 226. All burn-offs should be registered on the VicFire Burn-off notification line, 1800 668 511. A written permit is required to burn off grass, undergrowth, weeds or other vegetation during the fire danger period. Permits may be issued by the municipal fire prevention officer or the CFA district office. Lighting a fire in the open without a permit is an offence and can incur a penalty of $21,600 and/ or 12 months jail. Barbecues and fires for cooking or warmth do not require a permit, but must be lit in properly constructed fireplaces (visit cfa. vic.gov.au) Using an incinerator, chainsaw, lawn mower, welding or grinding equipment, or driving vehicles coming into contact with vegetation and machinery, are permitted. Property owners can find legal guidelines and practical advice at cfa.vic.gov.au. A total fire ban means no fires can be lit that day unless with a specific exemption or special permit. This applies irrespective of the fire restriction status for a given municipality. Further details at cfa.vic.gov.au

Sailability afloat with community support AS the sailing season gets under way at Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron, community access participants in the club’s Sailability program are enjoying the benefits of major changes to the marina and clubhouse. Storage areas for the 303 yachts and their masts and sails have also been improved. The Sailability program’s Bendigo Bank account has been swelled by two donations: Camerons Bight Boat Club gave $2000 which is being used to buy uniforms for incoming volunteers and replacement shirts and rain slickers for current volunteers. The money will also pay for extra fenders for the yachts. Rosebud branch of the Country Women’s Association donated $1000 for replacement sails and extra equipment. Coordinator Brian Jones said a small group from Ambleside Tours, Melbourne, came on a recent Saturday for lunch and sailing for people with disabilities. About 100 year 6 pupils from St Simon the Apostle, Rowville, came for twoup sailing experiences over two days. A special session is planned for elderly residents from Ti Tree Lodge, Rosebud West. Eight Sorrento Community Centre members participated in a series of “sailing experience” afternoons. Mr Jones said at first the members sail with experienced volunteers and then in pairs or solo as they acquire new skills. This is on top of regular Tuesday sailing with those from Konnections, Kankama and Focus who support people with disabilities. These groups have been coming to BYS since 2002. Rip safety watch BOATERS are being urged to wear lifejackets and carry safety equipment this summer – especially near Port Phillip Heads. The area will be under the watchful eyes of the Water Police, who will be patrolling the area as part of Operation South End. They aim to ensure boaters safe and well equipped. Leading Senior Constable Dave McHenry said that following a coronial inquest, ‘The Rip’ was a designated hazardous area. “This designation means that under legislation people must wear life jackets in the area,” Leading Senior Constable McHenry said. “They are among an array of safety items that every boat owner should be carrying on board, but in this particular area the life jacket is especially important. “The water in the area can be very rough and should anyone fall out of the boat there could be dire consequences.” The area covers the water between Shortland Bluff, Point Nepean and Point Lonsdale. Leading Senior Constable McHenry said the operation wasn’t all about issuing infringement notices, rather educating the public about their responsibilities on the water. “The weather is slowly heating up and it’s a great time to get out on the water,” he said. “But if you can’t do it safely, don’t do it at all. “If you’re heading out on the water for the first time in a while, make sure to do a thorough inventory of your safety equipment and ensure it’s all up to date and in working order.” Operation South End will run throughout the summer.

The intersection at Canterbury Jetty Rd is a perfect example of what can be simply constructed and proof of such a great safe outcome. This intersection with its pedestrian island provides a safe haven for grandparents, parents and children with all their beach gear to cross the road. I have written to Vic Roads regarding my concerns. Steve Hill, Rye
It is of course completely logical that lower speeds are likely to mean less damage and injury in accidents (“Slower makes sense, Letters, 22/11/16). The problem is though, that if you take this logic all the way to its logical conclusion, you are left with speed limits of 10kph, and even then there would still be accidents. Can you imagine driving to Mildura with a speed limit of 80kph all the way, as suggested? Pity the poor daily delivery drivers. It would become so tedious and boring that accidents from inattention and fatigue would probably double. Surely we have reached the point where any more wholesale reductions in speed limits would become counter-productive and make you wonder why we have roads in the first place. Work to make our roads and cars safer should continue, but not with lower and lower speed limits. Chris Taylor, Rosebud
Racism not new Christine Fry (“Not Racists, Letters, 6/12/16) is so wrong when she claims that “Ms Rayner’s statement that we are somehow white supremacists or racists completely is completely blown out of the water. History has shown that there has been racial tension ever since the first settlement when the white guys poisoned the water holes of the blacks to be rid of them so they could take over the land. Don’t forget the attempt at genocide where the white man tried to take the black out of the blacks and the removal of Aboriginal children( the stolen generation). The goldfields was another hot spot when Chinese prospectors were murdered and their pigtails cut off and stuffed in their dead mouths. We have had tensions between all newcomers to this country. Remember the fights between young Aussie lads and “Wogs, “Dagoes and the Greeks, in fact, any newcomer? My wife immigrated to Australia with her family in 1956 when she was 12 and she experienced racism at her school, not only by some of the class, but also the supposed educated man, her teacher. Australians - not all, but some - are inherent racists and have been given carte blanche [by

I recently read an article by Stephen Taylor (“Call for more road crossings, The News 15/11/16) regarding a campaign by Tiffany Wills and the need for pedestrian islands along Point Nepean Rd so that pedestrian access to the beach is “family safe’, during the summer holiday period and the rest of the year. Having suffered many near misses while crossing the road I totally support the campaign and seek [Mornington Peninsula Shire] councils commitment to act on behalf of both locals and visitors to have pedestrian islands constructed at regular locations or at most street intersections that access Point Nepean Rd along the heavily populated “beach strip from Rosebud through to Blairgowrie.

Barking angry I feel very let down by the Mornington Peninsula Shire regarding neighbours barking dogs. I have endured 10 years of relentless daily barking of an inconsiderate neighbours two Labradors. Over the 10 years I have reported the problem to five rangers who have a very non-committal approach to this serious matter. To add to my problem, two large dogs have arrived on the other side. These dogs bark regularly while their owners are out or at work each day. One rate paying resident of 40 years versus four barking dogs. I desperately need help or advice on this matter. All I ask is to have some peace and quiet free from daily barking dogs. Name and address supplied, Rye
Dogs in danger The story about a zookeeper who punched a kangaroo in the central west of NSW has gone viral. People are asking why a person so experienced with animals would use violence against one, particularly a member of a native species. Others are worried about the dog which was being held by the ‘roo just before the punch. The man’s employer, Taronga Zoo, said it “strongly opposes the striking of animals and does not support the practice of using dogs to hunt, as this can result in negative welfare for both species”, but has not fired the perpetrator. One thing is being missed in the row over who was in danger and who was threatening who. The dogs were only confronting the kangaroo because a bunch of men wanted to go and kill a pig. The lesson is clear: if you are genuinely
concerned about the welfare of your dog, don’t put him or her in danger among wild animals and guns. And if, like the vast majority of Australians, you are opposed to cruelty to animals, leave the rifles and dogs at home and take a camera instead. Ashley Fruno, associate director, PETA Australia
Take care on roads As the festive season kicks off and our social calendars begin to fill up, it’s timely to remind everyone to take extra care on the roads. Many of us will travel long distances in the coming weeks for Christmas get-togethers and we know the roads become increasingly busy during this time of year. It’s critical that everyone plans their journeys, makes good decisions and looks out for each other on the roads to ensure we’re all present for our loved ones this Christmas. In the excitement of festivities it can be difficult to keep track of how many alcoholic drinks we have consumed and we know consuming as little as one drink impairs your judgement. If you’re planning on drinking any alcohol our advice is to plan a way home that doesn’t involve driving. Some of us will travel on unfamiliar roads this summer so it’s important we all slow down, take regular breaks and drive to the weather and road conditions. Let’s all work together to keep each other safe so we can all enjoy Christmas with our families and friends. Joe Calafiore, TAC CEO
Festivities can distract Every year we look forward to the festive season – it is a time to relax, celebrate and be with those we love. It is also a busy time – a time of travel, parties and distractions which makes it a dangerous time on our roads. Already this year we have seen 270 lives lost on Victorian roads, 36 more than this time last year. This not only represents the lives lost, but also the families, friends and communities left mourning their loved ones. As a motor vehicle accident lawyer, I have represented many families and have unfortunately seen the widespread devastation caused by road accidents. By being patient, prepared and responsible behind the wheel this festive season, we can all enjoy a safe, well deserved break with our loved ones. Joanne Panagakis, practice group leader, Slater and Gordon
Summer visitors: This tiger snake was stopped in its tracks last week in Rosebud, but the advice is to leave them alone.
Warm weather warning A MORNINGTON Peninsula snake catcher is urging people to be cautious of snakes coming out of hibernation, but to resist the urge to kill the legally protected reptiles. Mornington-based, registered snake catcher Barry Goldsmith receives about 20 to 30 calls about snake sightings every week, mainly from around the peninsula but also as far as Tullamarine, and said snakes were important indicators of a healthy environment and were usually just trying to hide. “Snakes will be more obvious now the weather is warming up, but the better thing to do rather than try to hurt or kill it, is to let it escape, stay away from it and keep yards tidy and grass mown,” he said. “Despite what some people think, snakes do not want to attack and will be more frightened of you that you are of them. “They are part of the ecosystems, and they eat rats and mice.” Mr Goldsmith said even tiger snakes, often thought of as aggressive, would rather get away than
bite. But Rosebud resident Kevin Berkefeld, whose neighbour killed a tiger snake in his backyard last week, said he was fearful that the snake could bite his grandchildren, who visit regularly. “We both have clean, tidy backyards but to see the snake in the middle of the day heading cross the lawn toward the back steps was quite scary,” he said. “My neighbour has a farming background, so instincts kicked in.” Mr Goldsmith said snakes did not die instantly when decapitated, and could suffer extended agony before death. “It’s in pain and scared, and that’s the worst thing you can do, as there are plenty of cases of people being bitten by the body-less head when trying to put it in the bin.” “I would advise take precautions, but don’t kill snakes, it’s cruel and unnecessary.” Call the Department of Sustainability and Environment on 136186 for a list of snake controllers.

Feature artists show diversity in style TWO artists with different styles are the “feature artists” at next year’s Mornington Art Show. Craig Davy’s uses an impressionistic approach to landscapes and seascapes while Ron Brown has been described as having “a unique contemporary style with colour featured strongly in his work”. Their works will be among more than 700 entries in the 45th Mornington Art Show in January. Davy was born in Melbourne and grew up on the Mornington Peninsula which has resulted in his “connection” with the peninsula’s landscape. In 2009 he began painting in oils in appreciation for fine realistic art of the past and inspired by such painters as Penleigh Boyd, Corot, Streeton and more recently Zhaoming Wu and Daeni. “Craig has an impressionistic approach with emphasis on light, movement and brush strokes,” art show organiser John Renowden said. “He has successfully exhibited in major art shows such as Camberwell, Victor Harbour and Mornington and in 2015 was awarded Best Peninsula Scene in 2015 at Mornington Art Show.” Mr Renowden said Ron Brown was a originally a landscape painter whose recent work “illustrates his interest in colour and texture”. “His works are known to compliment the interiors of both domestic and industrial architecture. He works on canvas, often combining a variety of mediums within the one art work.” Browns awards including Camberwell Art Show Contemporary Acrylic Award 2013 and Art In Tune 2015. The Mornington Art Show, organised by Mornington Rotary Club, runs 19-26 January at the Peninsula Community Theatre, corner Wilsons Rd and Nepean Highway, Mornington.

Ray White Hastings and the Western Port Community Giving Program would like to say a big thank you to all of those who contributed a gift or a non – perishable item to our giving tree. It is great to see the community of Hastings and surrounding suburbs, pull together even though it seems to be tougher times this year for more and more locals. Knowing that children can wake up with big smiles on their faces on Christmas morning is worth the entire organisation it takes to try and collect donations and we appreciate everyone that has helped in with this program. Big thumbs up to the volunteers who gave their time down at the hall to organise the gifts and hampers every year to go out to the families. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas & a Happy and Safe New Year!

Merry Christmas from Geoff and Sharon Mclean at Utow Caravan Hire THE holidays are the time when most people drag out their camper or caravan, hook it up and head off to enjoy the investment. There are however some safety issues you should consider before you go, as Geoff Mclean from Utow explains: “If you have time, the van should be given a full service. Brakes and bearings are all checked professionally, but as the driver there are still things you must do to make sure your rig is safe. Check the tyres for air pressure, cracks or cuts. Did you know that tyres should not be more than 6 years old? Old tyres are much more likely to have problems. Check all of your lights. Are your brakes working? With electric brakes you should be able to feel the brakes operating. A good read of the instructions if you are not sure how they work. You probably need towing mirrors. Are your gas bottles in date and full? It’s always a good idea to light your fridge on gas if the van has been stored. Better to find out it is not working before you leave home. Often just a bit of spider web can cause a failure. Have a good look over every aspect of the van or camper. Make sure everything is bolted securely, tightened up, not rusted or damaged,” said Geoff. “If you have not done much towing, keep your speed down on the road. The faster you drive the faster things can go wrong. But remember to pull over and let others pass your slower vehicle. Enjoy your Christmas and have a great getaway in your van or camper.” Utow and Resort Caravans is at 25 Simcock St, Somerville. Phone 5978 0083. www.utowcaravans.com.au

RICK Bennett from Big Swedish Store Run takes the time, travel, stress and hassle out of shopping at IKEA by providing a weekly buying, pickup and delivery service to the Mornington Peninsula. “This is a great service for people who maybe can’t get to IKEA or don’t have a large enough vehicle/trailer,” said Mr Bennett. “Customers can now do their shopping on the Ikea website and simply email us a shopping list. “We send them a quote for selecting, buying and delivering the chosen items to their front door. Your shopping is only handled by us – not several couriers/trucks etc. “We text or call our customers at least one hour before arrival at their home and give an accurate delivery time of +- 15 minutes.” By combining several orders into each trip they are a very “green” service – one van is much better for the environment than several car/trailer trips. “We have probably saved a few marriages too – for many husbands/sons/partners, a trip to Ikea
does not make their day!” Big Swedish Store Run has been operating in Geelong for five years and Bendigo for three years, and boast lots of happy customers. “We are a family run business, focused on providing a prompt, friendly and professional service. Kitchens, storage units, dining tables, wardrobes, mattresses, beds, sofas, toys, cutlery and every other imaginable item have been safely delivered from Ikea to homes in Geelong , Gisborne, Kyneton, and Bendigo,” said Mr Bennett. “Our minimum delivery fee is $65 and this is based on size and weight. Basically, it’s a $1/ kilo with large items like sofas and mattresses a bit more because of the size and we give discounts for multiple items and large orders.” Big Swedish Store Run visit the Springvale store at least once a week, but add runs to Richmond if needed. 100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...
Travelling motion picture company a huge hit Compiled by Cameron McCullough LAST Friday gave further evidence that the Majestic Picture Company desires to produce up-to- date pictures, and at the same time, items of interest. The Battle of the Somme was very realistic. On Friday 22nd the New East Lyne will be produced; a piece that will live for ever, companion picture to Napoleon at St Helena, Charlie Chaplin and a host of others. Dromana will be visited Monday 18th Dec; Somerville 19th and Hastings 20th, with the Australia at War. We can confidently recommend the residents of these towns to support the Majestic Pictures in their endeavours to bring a Melbourne show to their town. *** MESSRS Brody and Mason will hold a special sale of household furniture and sundries at Somerville on Thursday next, full particulars of which are advertised. *** THE ladies of Frankston are invited to meet the committee of the Frankston Athletic Club in the Mechanics’ on Monday evening, to see what arrangements with regard to the refreshment stall at the sports on New Year’s Day can be made. *** THE local Red Cross Society appeals to all who are interested, for donations, in cash or kind, to provide Xmas Cheer for our soldiers at Langwarrin Camp.
Donations may be left with Mrs Maxwell, “Thalassa”, Frankston. *** A SPECIAL meeting of the Somerville Fruitgrowers’ Association will be held on Monday next, Dec 18th, at 8pm in the Mechanics’ Hall, re holding a Show and election of committee. All members are requested to attend. *** SPECIAL attention is called to an advertisement in another column, of a presentation to 23 recruits who have recently volunteered from Frankston, and the immediate district. Each volunteer will receive a gold medal. This is the sixth presentation to Frankston volunteers, the total number of whom now amounts to more than 130. His Honor Sir John Madden G.C.M.G., L.L.D., D.C L. etc, has very kindly consented to make the presentations and deliver an address, on the occasion. Captain Conder, the Commandant, and Chaplain Gates will also deliver addresses. By kind permission of the Commandant the Langwarrin Military Camp Band will play selections during the evening. *** Frankston Court of Petty Sessions. Monday 11th December, 1916. Before Mr P. Cohen P.M. and Messrs C. G. V. Williams, W. J. Oates and C. W. Grant.J’s.P. DEFAULT SUMMONS. William Henry Miller v Edwin James Foster claim for £50, money due on promissory notes. Summons not served. Hearing extended to next month.
TRUANCY Constable Ryan v James Catley Neglecting to send William Catley to school required number of days during week ended 2nd September. No appearance of defendant. Fined 2s in default 3 hours imprisonment. BREACH OF FACTORIES ACT Inspector Geo Hall v Hector Gamble - unlawfully employing one, R. Marshall, in his wood yard at a lower rate of wages than the rate fixed by the Country Fuel and Fodder Board. Defendant pleaded not guilty and was represented by Mr Utber who informed the court that defendant was not aware that the Determination was in existence and had employed the boy out of charity in order to help him. After hearing the evidence of Inspector Hall, Const. Ryan and the boy Marshall, the P.M. announced that the Bench accepted defendant’s statement that he was unaware of the existance of the Determination. However a breach had occurred Fined 20s with 7s costs. A claim put in by the Inspector for arrears of wages for the boy was disallowed by the Bench, who refused to make an order, the P.M. stating that the boy could sue for the arrears if he saw fit to do so. TRAVELLING WITHOUT A TICKET H. Jansen of Brunswick, pleaded guilty to a charge of riding on the railways without a ticket, between Aspendale and Carrum on 5th Nov.— Fined 10s with 7s 6d costs. Wm. Ekins, bookmaker, from Men-
tone, charged with travelling between Mentone and Frankston on Nov 29th., without a ticket. Ekins was defended by Mr Cantor and pleaded not guilty. Inspector Hory of the Railways Department who conducted the prosecution, informed the court that on the date in question Ekins arrived by the midnight train from Melbourne. He passed through the barrier and a gave up a Mentone ticket. When challenged by the stationmaster, he became abusive and refused to pay or give his name until the police arrived. Meanwhile a struggle took place between Ekins and the station master. Const. Ryan arrived and arrested him. Henry Herbert Perry, station master at Frankston, William Grant, Guard on the midnight train gave evidence as to the facts outlined by Mr Hory. Const E C. Ryan stated chat he was called to the station at 1 30 a.m on 29th Nov. He found defendant to be under the influence of drink, and after hearing complaints he arrested defendant who offered him £1 to let him go. At the police office defendant complained that the station master and guard had brutally assaulted him by punching him on the face kicking him, etc. He made no complaint at the railway station and he had no marks on him. Witness released defendant on bail. Defendant gave evidence on his own behalf, and in cross examination admitted going through the gate
without saying that he only had a Mentone ticket. The P.M stated that defendant’s statement as to the assault on him was ridiculous and the Bench did not believe him. Fined 40s with 10s costs. A second charge of offensive behaviour was dismissed. DISORDERLY VISITORS Const Ryan charged John R Johansen, a milk carter, from Prahran, with (1) unlawfully assaulting Albert G S Anderson at Frankston, on Sunday 26th Nov. (2) Unlawfully assaulting Arthur James Clague, at Frankston, on Sunday, Nov 26th. (3) Behaving in an offensive manner in Young Street, Frankston, on Sunday 26th November. Johansen, who pleaded not guilty was defended by Mr Cantor. Sergt. Parkin, who conducted the prosecutions, informed the court that on the Sunday in question, accused, with other men, visited Frankston, and, while drunk, behaved badly. Accused did not profit by the warning which Const. Ryan had previously given, but violently assaulted two men. Evidence for the prosecution by Albert Anderson, A. Clague, Privates Hooper and Burke and Const. Ryan. Defendant alleged that the other men assaulted him first. G. H. Farmer, boot maker at Frankston supported his contention. The Bench convicted Johansen and imposed fines. *** From the pages of the Mornington Standard, 16 December, 1916

THE MEANING OF EXISTENCE... AND OTHER SHORT STORIES
The summer of the Chocolate Ripple Effect By Stuart McCullough SUMMERTIME and the living is easy. Unless, of course, you have a summer job in which case you should prepare to work harder than you ever knew was humanly possible. From one week to the next, I was plucked from the cloistered comfort zone of school and cast into the adult world of actual, real work. To say that it seemed confronting at the time would be an understatement of some magnitude. Suffice to say, I found the real world something of a shock. I had just finished year 12. Nowadays, this achievement would be marked by borrowing money from my parents, skedaddling to the Gold Coast before blowing the lot on a cover charge for an empty disco and a blue cocktail comprised entirely of the least popular spirits known to bartending and left-over bathroom disinfectant. But, back then, I decided to celebrate the completion twelve years of schooling by immediately starting a summer job doing data entry for Safeway. It was my first office job. At the time, my wardrobe comprised my school uniform, a pair of jeans, a Hang-10 windcheater and a flannel tracksuit. It would be fair to say that I had little in the way of suitable business attire. Somewhat tragically, I don’t recall an emergency trip to the menswear section at Myer, which means I was probably forced to improvise. Not since the grade six pool party when I decided to take an over-sized pair of my father’s shorts to avoid the embarrassment of wearing lolly-bags in front of my class mates, only to see them dislodged by the force of my first dive into the pool and float away before being swallowed by the filter, had the potential for outright humiliation been so great. They would not have been suit pants. Frankly, the trousers I wore simply wouldn’t qualify. They were slacks. There’s every chance that I might have worn a short-sleeved shirt. In a botched attempt to appear sophisticated, the shirt was a

shade of gelato green. That was my best shirt. After that, it was downhill and the descent was steep. And as for the tie, beggars cannot be choosers. The tie I wore was one handed down from previous generations. If you were being polite, you might describe it was ‘busy’. A whirling mess of paisley, my necktie was not so much ‘eye catching’ as it was something that could induce blindness instantly. The job of data entry clerk was located at head office in Mulgrave and, each morning, I got a lift to work. It was a new world of peak hour traffic and radio reports. At the office, I had a desk and a computer terminal. I would then be handed a
swathe of computer printouts and it was then my task to input the prices. Until that time, I’d only ever sat in front of a computer to play ‘Frogger’. This was not quite as much fun. Indeed, I’d previously thought that getting run over as I tried to cross the street was as stressful as the world of computers got. I was wrong. The stakes were high. If I messed up, it would mean that the price for a tub of ice cream in Hoppers Crossing would be completely out of whack. Although making an error as to the price of a tub of ice cream might seem like a small thing, I can assure you that such catastrophes have very real consequences. I thought of it as the ‘chocolate
ripple affect’. I had seen the film ‘War Games’ with Matthew Broderick in which a computer has the power to destroy humanity by launching a nuclear missile attack. The impact of a data entry error seemed to me then to be far worse. Out of fear that a casual data entry error might bring the entire retail sector crashing to my knees, my next summer job was in an orchard. Not only did this mean I could avoid the awesome responsibility of data entry, I could spend time with my brother and our friend, Marcus. The dress code was casual. It was outdoors. It was, in fact, as different to study as could possibly be imagined. Our job was not to pick fruit but to thin it, so that it could grow properly and be picked by others. Over those weeks each summer, I would thin fruit until I was doing it in my dreams. Getting up each morning, it was like Bill Murray in ‘Groundhog Day’ except that instead of ‘I Got You’ by Sonny and Cher, commercial FM radio deemed ‘I Touch Myself’ by The Divinyls as appropriate audio fare for six o’clock in the morning. We thinned, we fell off our ladders when we occasionally lost our balance and we talked. It was the kind of work that conducive to casual chatter and we talked up hill and down dale. From a distance, we must have sounded like cockatoos, squawking as we worked. These were my first forays into the world of work. Back then it seemed a somewhat alien experience. But, for better or for worse, that was summer for me. Although I didn’t realise it then, those months between school years were the most carefree days of my life. Other than not inadvertently giving away tubs of ice cream or falling off my ladder too often, I had nothing in the way of responsibility. Incidentally, I no longer dream of thinning fruit. But take me to an orchard and put a ladder in front of me, and I’ve no doubt that it would all come flooding back to me. Welcome back summer. stuart@stuartmccullough.com
WHAT’S NEW
10th Peninsula Summer Music Festival World-class music, intimate performances, unique peninsula places.
peninsulafestival.com.au
TICKETS are now on sale for the 10th Peninsula Summer Music Festival – a showcase of Australian and international artists in 20 exquisite events across 14 glorious summer days on the Mornington Peninsula. Enjoy exhilarating musical performances as wineries, churches, lush lawns and intimate spaces come alive for all ages. Under the artistic direction of Julia Fredersdorff, the diverse program ranges from the historically rich baroque music of 17th century (QJODQG )UDQFH DQG ,WDO\ ÂżHU\ J\SV\ melodies, intimate piano recitals and contemporary jazz, to the intoxicating rhythms of South Africa and the transcendental beauty of a beloved pastoral opera. Festival Artistic Director Julia Fredersdorff said it’s hard to believe that what started as a 3-day, 6-concert gathering of kindred spirits (both on stage and in the audience) has grown to play such a vital part in the cultural life of the Mornington Peninsula. “This year we present a cornucopia of musical offerings, from the (unjustly) little-known Scottish Songs of Beethoven to the renegade stylings of the Australian Guitar Trio, via joyous South African jive, the pinnacle of Romantic piano repertoire, and a swinging homage to the heyday of swing, stride and boogie.â€? “We welcome back some familiar faces, such as Sally-Anne Russell, Acacia Quartet and David Greco, and invite you to discover the rising talents
of Kevin Suherman and Ensemble 642. Thirty emerging and preprofessional talented musicians will spend a week at Toorak College in Mt Eliza learning from and performing with the world’s best during the Festival. Students will develop their skills with English Stage Director and vocal coach Sophie Daneman, Music Director Donald Nicolson, Festival Artistic Director Julia Fredersdorff, and renowned Danish harpsichordist Lars Ulrik Mortensen. Based on the model of the great European Summer Schools, the 2017 Peninsula Summer Music Festival Academy gives talented young musicians the opportunity to work intensely in a residential setting alongside some of the world’s leading Baroque musicians. After their intensive study week, Academy students will showcase their achievements as they perform Handel’s beloved pastoral opera Acis & Galatea on 13-14 January on the lawn of St John the Evangelist in Flinders. “I am especially proud of the 2017 Festival Academy, which will perform Handel’s beloved pastoral opera, Acis & Galatea, in a suitably ‘al fresco’ setting, said Ms Fredersdorff. Despite the increasing number of students wishing to study historicallyinformed performance practice in Australia, there are very few local training opportunities in the genre
Klezmania - Australia’s leading klezmer ensemble
at the vocational level. For many years, Australian musicians wishing to specialise in this area have had to study overseas, often remaining in Europe to further their careers. Held annually, the Peninsula Summer Music Festival Academy addresses this issue by providing the opportunity for Australian emerging and preprofessional musicians to work with a mentor of international standing in a domestic setting.

Brittain belted 10 sixes and nine fours in his massive knock of 181, backing up the 155 he hit against Mornington the match before. Both the Magpies and Doggies have some of the best bowlers running around in the MPCA. In addition to two massive tons, Brittain has also hit two half centuries against Langwarrin and Sorrento this season, giving him almost 500 runs for the year. Former Victorian wicket keeper
and South Australian coach Darren ‘Chuck’ Berry told radio SEN listeners during the week that Brittain’s knock of 155 was one of the best he had seen. Berry does some specialist coaching at Baxter and at Mornington. While Brittain’s knock was something special, there was a more than reasonable batsman at the other end dominating the attack – Daniel Warwick. The Baxter skipper was superb in his knock of 124. The highest score after that was Ben Brittain with 13. Regardless, almost 400 will be too many for the Magpies to track down. Langwarrin is just 37 runs from victory against Pines after the first day where they bowled out the home side for 109.
Kangas skipper Travis Campbell was at his best as he led the charge with 5/35 from 13.1 overs, while leg spinner Matty Prosser made it 13 wickets for the season with 3/22 from 14 overs. In reply, Langwarrin isn’t out of the woods, four wickets down for 73. Matty Prosser was the best of the top order bats with 24. Campbell and Aaron Edwards are the not out batsmen. Nick Wilcox and Pat Jackson each have two wickets for the Piners. Sorrento has already won its match against Moorooduc. The Ducs batted first and were bowled out for just 85. John Collison scored more than half of the runs with 43.
Rob Parslow picked up 4/18 for the Sorras while CJ King snared 4/39. In reply, Sorrento is 3/149, Corey Harris not out 61 and Ben Tracy unbeaten on 35. Somerville has set Long Island 259 for victory after skipper Leigh Lowry belted 128 and Brenton Alp 54. Nick Marshall also opened with 35 to help the home side to a very competitive total. Chris Hocking and Stuart Swift were the pick of the bowlers with three and four wickets respectively. Mt Eliza and Peninsula Old Boys are locked in what appears to be a tight tussle. In the battle of the neighbours, the Mounties batted first and posted 263.
Damien Kent was among the runs again for the home side, opening with 84, Keith Biggs hit 57 and Tim Clark 45 to be the key run makers. Evion Bowen and Jon Forrest each claimed three wickets for the Old Boys. Mornington looks set for victory against Pearcedale after a solid day with the ball. The Doggies rolled the visitors for 132, Michael Heib dominating with the ball with 7/46. Brad McDonald claimed 2/27. Shayne Gillings (38) and max Blackburn (34) offered some middle order resistance for the Panthers when their side was reeling at 4/38.
Reds continue their domination DISTRICT By IT Gully MT MARTHA has continued its domination in District cricket, already picking up the 12 points against Main Ridge. Main Ridge have been a major disappointment this season with high expectations that they would be a real challenger in 2016-17. However, the Ridge’s form has been up and down and they find themselves mid-range on the ladder. On Saturday they batted first and were rolled for just 125. Michael Holmes opened with 27 and Billy Sakalis was the next best with 24. Shaun Foster was sent packing for a blob and skipper Gareth Wyatt was trapped in front for 17. Wyatt has
scored just over 100 runs this season (76 coming in one innings against Rye), which is far from the star Wyatt that we have come to expect. Rhys Whitling, Michael Claven and Curtis Stone all did the damage with the ball for Mt Martha. The Reds have already past the total, skipper Mitchel Darvill scoring 78 at the top of the order and Riley Shaw hitting 40. In the battle for outright top spot, Red Hill is just 69 runs from victory against Flinders. Flinders batted first on their home deck on Saturday and were bowled out for 127. Tom Clements was the best of the Sharks’ bats with 39, while Blake Hogan-Keogh hit five fours in his 31. Brent Martin was the pick of the Red Hill bowlers with 5/25 from 26.1
overs. Carl Robinson also did some damage with 3/32 from 20 overs. In reply, Red Hill faced the final 14 overs of the day and settled on 1/59. Matt Merifield was in a destructive mood for the Hillmen, blasting two sixes and five fours on his way to 41. Delcombe Park has set Seaford Tigers with a challenge of scoring 299 to win their match. The Parkers batted first on their home deck and it was Jon Guthrie this time who took to the bowling with a fine 132. Guthrie’s century included 10 fours and three sixes. Nick Christides was also up and going with 74, while Evan Campbell chipped in with 39. David James, Ash Mills and Max Watters all picked up two wickets each for the Tigers. Baden Powell is just 51 runs away
from victory against Rye. The Demons batted first on Saturday and made 111 in 69 overs. Aaron Vernon was the pick of the Rye batsmen with 37, while Andrew Dunn scored 17. In reply, the Braves are cruising at 0/61, Coen Chernishoff and Elia Carter both undefeated on 29. Rosebud has started well in its chase against Seaford, who were bowled out for 200. Seaford batted first on its home ground and Ryan McQueen got his team away to a good start with 62, while receiving good support from Chris Cleef with 44. However, Jason Nagel took wickets at important times, including that of McQueen, and finished with 4/59 from 27 overs. Billy Quigley picked up 3/47 from 13 overs.
In reply, the Buds are 1/47, Brian Doughty the out batsman for 18. Quigley and Mathew Maher are the not out batsmen. Boneo has set Heatherhill 204 for victory. The Pandas top and middle order failed miserably which put real pressure on the middle and lower order. Thankfully Cam Wiliams (64) and Leigh Janssen (39) made an impression late in the innings. Boneo was 3/23 at one stage and then 7/70 before the late comeback. Jason Hinde was superb with the ball for the Hills with 4/41 while Matt Meagher claimed 3/44 from 27.1 overs. Brett Maxwell was also good for the home side with 3/55 from 17 overs.

Yabbies in a good position SUB-DISTRICT By IT Gully TYABB has given itself very chance to beat Carrum and keep its season alive with an impressive performance with the bat on Saturday. Yabbies’ opener Nick Taranto hit 116 and number three Michael Edwards went agonising close to a century, scoring 96, to help the Yabbies to 4/270. Troy Hollingsworth was the best of the Lions’ bowlers with three of the
four wickets, finishing his 30 overs with 3/92. Dromana is in some real strife as it tries to reign in Balnarring’s 206. The Hoppers did well with the ball to keep the Saints to a gettable total. Jye Voelkl was at his best for the Hoppers with 5/53 from 15.4 overs, while Craig Dunlop snared 3/60 from 20 overs. In reply, Dromana is in some early strife at 2/35. Kierran Voelkl is not out 21. Ballam Park should be favorite
heading into day two of its match against Tootgarook. However, the Knights would need to be at their best and the Frogs’ bowlers would need to have a stinker for the home side to win. Travis French with 55 and Coen Packer with 42 got the visitors away to a flier before the wheels fell off. Stuart Plunkett was superb for the Knights with 4/59 from 26.5 overs, while Jake Williams and Jason Riley each claimed two wickets. Top of the table Hastings is in a

world of pain against Frankston YCW. After doing the job with the ball and bowling out the Stonecats for 150, the Blues bats didn’t respond and are in some trouble at 3/18. At one stage the Stonecats were 7/48 before Brett Hudgson (55) and Andrew Kitson (44) came to the rescue. Robbie Hearn was surprisingly the pick of the bowlers with 3/8 from six overs for the Blues while Isuru Dias and Ryan McNamara picked up a couple each.

A lot is going to be on the shoulders of Luke Hewitt for the Blues to win. Carrum Downs is just three wickets away from victory against Skye. After making 181 in 55 overs, the Cougars have Skye in real trouble at 7/40 in reply. After top scoring with the bats for the Cougars with 40, David Darvin did all the damage with the ball also, claiming 5/16 from 13 overs, including six maidens.

Mazda SUV & passenger car sales almost at parity AS Australian buyer interest in SUVs continues to climb, and thanks to the strength of the Mazda CX range, sales between Mazda SUVs and passengers cars were almost at parity in November. Mazda sold 4,280 SUVs and 4,351 passenger cars last month for a rounded 50/50 sales split with YearTo-Date (YTD) figures separating the two 46/54. Including the 1,194 Ute sales, Mazda sold a November record 9,825 vehicles last month for a 9.9 per cent market share, according to VFACTS figures released today. Overall, Mazda has sold 108,446 cars, SUVs and utilities YTD for a 10 per cent slice of the Australian market with numbers up 4.0 per cent Year-On-Year (YOY). The second best performing automotive manufacturer in November and YTD, Mazda maintains its position as the nation’s favourite full-line importer and it will set a new full-year sales record - passing its 2015 benchmark of 114,024 - come December 31. In a first for Mazda, every SUV and passenger car in the Mazda range was placed first, second or third in their respective segments last month, with the Mazda CX-5 Australia’s best-selling SUV. Mazda3 sales led the way in November with 2,877 retails. Up 31 per cent compared to its October tally, 32,966 Mazda3s have been registered this year. Alongside Mazda CX-5’s 1,956 sales - its second-best November
ever - First-Ever Mazda CX-3 sold a November-best 1,403 small SUVs and Brand-New Mazda CX-9 hit another all-time high. Since its launch in July, Mazda CX-9 has broken the previous (March 2008) record of 603 units, improving it to 738 in August. Sales then climbed to 863 in October, peaking at 921 last month. With a total of 3,384 sales in 2015 and 3,344
in 2014, the second-generation CX-9 has sold 3,718 units between June and November this year. Also performing strongly was Mazda BT-50 with 1,194 November sales. With more interest from buyers than ever before, the tough Ute will easily surpass its previous annual record of 13,702 set in 2013, when the sun sets on 2016. In support, 1,003 Mazda2s found
homes last month, the New Mazda6 maintained its position as the country’s most popular imported medium car under $60,000 with 368 sales, and Mazda MX-5 is having its best year on record. With 103 November sales taking it to 1,490 units YTD, it passed the previous best of 1,468 in 2006. Mazda Australia marketing director, Alastair Doak said: “We are
delighted with our performance last month. The Brand-New Mazda CX-9 has exceeded expectations and we have a full pipeline of product flowing through from Japan to meet demand, while the Mazda CX-5 almost five years after it went on sale - is still the top-selling SUV, which is extraordinary. We are indeed fortunate to have such a strong range and one that appeals to so many buyers.”
