GILLIAN Tong and Sharon Driessen were among the 480 people who took part in the Mother’s Day Classic run and walk at Coolart Historical Homestead and Wetlands on Sunday. All quiet on car park front By Stephen Taylor CUSTOMERS at the Coles supermarket in Hastings will be pleased to see the restoration of car parking facilities after a dispute lasting several years was recently resolved. Temporary wire barricades will be removed and access to parking bays provided in front of the retailer’s Liquorland outlet. The issue began back in January
1983 when the original developer of the supermarket site – believed to be former Carlton Football Club president George Harris – and the then Shire of Hastings entered into an agreement which gave the developer of the Coles site access to, and use of, the council-owned area off King Street as a car park. There was already a small car park – about 410 square metres - at the rear of the Victoria Street Medical Clinic which was being used by its owners. As a result, under the agreement, Mr Harris was required to lease this car park from the owners of the building

ers having use of the whole car park. Fast-forward 25 years to 2008 and the owners of the body corporate controlling the Victoria Street building, with its five small businesses, offered the land to Oaksey at what they deemed a reasonable price. He refused to buy it, probably thinking the land could only ever be used as a car park. Continued on Page 7

for the next 25 years with all the rent payable in advance. It wasn’t much money: only about $2000 all up – and 25 years was a long time not to have to worry about it. The developer shelved any plans he may have had to buy the land outright and signed the lease. Time went by and another property entity, Oaksey Pty Ltd, bought the Coles building, with the store’s custom-
