Busted POLICE manning a booze bus braved the elements to test motorists on Western Port Highway on Friday night. While the wild winter weather kept the number of random breath tests down to just 150, it was by no means quiet. Testing resulted in one man returning a positive result for drugs, and a woman registering a blood alcohol level of .087. Also heating things up for police was a stolen car that failed to stop, resulting in a pursuit. The car is believed to be the same one that had been unsuccessfully chased by highway patrol officers in Casey earlier in the night. Picture: Gary Sissons
Islands ferry sold By Chris Brennan THE reliability of ferry services between Stony Point and French and Phillip islands has again been questioned following the sale of the newer of Inter Island Ferries’ two vessels. Three-year-old, twin-hulled James Grant was last week heading to Darwin after being sold to a national ferry operator for an undisclosed amount. A person familiar with the deal said the vessel was sailed to Queenscliff to be inspected by an agent acting for the prospective buyer.
However, the sale raised questions over the reliability of the islands’ sole ferry link, with only the 15-year-old George Bass now available. George Bass was directed to stop operating by Transport Safety Victoria late last month until unspecified equipment had been updated or fixed. Ferry owner Frank Denvir said at the time the matter had been minor and services had not been affected. However, a regular user of the ferry, who spoke to The News on the condition of anonymity, said the TSV order
highlighted the vulnerability of the service. They were surprised to hear the more modern and reliable James Grant had been taken out of service and sold. “It’s seems like a strange set up to have no back-up if there’s any problem with George Bass. “It’s an older vessel and you’re bound to have a breakdown at some stage and that would leave us without any service.” Former Inter Island Ferries’ skipper Anthony Mayall said he also had 'DYLG *ULI¿WK
serious reservations about the longterm viability of George Bass as the service’s sole vessel, claiming he had been sacked last month after refusing to skipper the 15-metre ferry due to ongoing safety concerns. Mr Mayall said he had been more than happy to skipper the 18-metre James Grant but felt compelled to notify maritime safety authorities when the boat was suddenly pulled out of service five weeks ago and replaced by George Bass. “I raised a number of safety issues
with that vessel [George Bass]; I refused to drive it [until the safety issues were addressed] and I was sacked because of that,” Mr Mayall said. “As the master of a vessel, I’m responsible for the safety of passengers; that’s the law and I wasn’t prepared to operate the vessel. “George Bass is 15 years old and it’s seen a lot of service in that time. To meet the schedule, you had to run the engines flat out the whole time. That has to affect reliability.” Continued Page 3

Big interest in ‘Good Shep’ fee-free loans Bon voyage: Western Port passenger ferry James Grant is enroute to Darwin after being sold by Inter Island Ferries. The three-year-old, twin-hulled vessel had serviced French and Phillip islands since last December.
Western Port passenger ferry sold Continued from Page 1 He said George Bass was licensed to carry 98 passengers and was powered by twin 200-horsepower engines. “James Grant carries only a few people more but has twin 500 [horsepower engines], so it’s significantly more powerful and a lot more manoeuvrable, with better steering and control; that means it’s much better in rougher conditions and obviously much safer all round. “[James Grant] is a new vessel in perfect condition. It was only bought about three years ago but it wasn’t used for about two and a half years. It just sat there.
“It was brought into service in December, just after I started working there, which was in November. It was in full service from December until July doing all the runs but then it was taken out of service again five weeks ago and replaced with George Bass.” Mr Mayall said he did not know why James Grant had been sold but speculated it could be a highly desirable vessel for another ferry operator. “If there was someone out there who needed a vessel like that, they’d have to put an order in and wait six months. If someone had one sitting there, they’d be very keen to grab hold of it. “They might have already secured a
contract and have service obligations to fulfil so they’d be pretty keen to get hold of a boat they could put straight into service.” Mr Denvir declined to speak to The News when contacted about the sale of James Grant. Mr Denvir had expressed disappointment at this newspaper covering the safety issued raised late last month (“Safety fix it order for ferry service”, The News, 23/7/13). At the time, Mr Denvir said he would never again make comments to The News. True to his word, Mr Denvir hung up when called on Friday afternoon.
LOW-income households in the Western Port area can access interest-free loans to pay for emergency expenses. Good Shepherd Youth and Family Service has reintroduced its popular no-interest loans program to the area to help families and individuals on Centrelink payments cover unexpected costs beyond their normal means. To qualify for a loan, applicants need to hold a current Centrelink healthcare or pension card and have been living at their current address for at least three months. Repayments are made in affordable amounts over a 12 or 18 months. Good Shepherd loans worker Gaynor Suhr said people on low-incomes had proven time and again they were good financial managers and reliable credit recipients. “People living on low incomes are often excellent money managers – when you don’t have much money you learn to be careful with it, she said. “People often just need to be given an opportunity to take out a fair and affordable loan. If they are willing and able to repay a loan, one of our loans can give them that chance.
“It can often be their first step on the road to building better lives for themselves and their families.” Ms Suhr cited one successful example, mother-of-four Kim. The Hastings resident’s washing machine and dryer had both broken down but because she was on a low income, had trouble finding fair and affordable credit. With winter setting in, Kim was forced to do two washes a day by hand and had difficulties getting the clothes dry in cold, damp weather. After hearing about the Good Shepherd loans, she successfully applied for no-interest finance to buy a new washing machine and dryer. “I’m just so happy that I don’t have to do washing by hand anymore and the kids don’t have to wait for days to have dry clothes,” she said. “It has made my life so much easier.” No-interest and low-interest loans are available through Good Shepherd Community House in Hastings for residents of Balnarring, Bittern, Crib Point, Hastings, Merricks, Moorooduc, Red Hill South, Somers, Somerville and Tyabb.

Op shop team looking for new volunteers Western Port
CRIB Point was chosen as the place for the Western Port Op Shop for a number of reasons, but mostly because the town did not have one. Shop spokeswoman Val Burley said it was a wise choice as it has proven to be very popular with an ever-changing supply of goods of high quality and welcoming staff dedicated to helping customers find
the goods they are seeking. The shop is open Wednesday to Saturday morning. It is staffed by a team of volunteers from the Western Port parish of the Uniting Church as well as other community members. “It is not all toil,” Ms Burley said. “As well as serving customers, there is also fun to be had with other team members. It is a happy and
rewarding place to work.” The shop’s net profit goes to community organisations with more than $65,000 donated so far. The shop is experiencing a shortage in staff and is seeking new volunteers join the team. For more information, call Val Burley on 5983 2727 or Winn McLoughlin on 5983 2353.

Easy as ABC for MP’s campaign By Toni Brient FLINDERS federal MP Greg Hunt kicked off the election campaign with two high-profile media appearances on Monday last week. Less than 24 hours after Prime Minister Kevin Rudd set the election for Saturday 7 September, the Liberal frontbencher appeared on the ABC’s Melbourne radio (774 AM) breakfast program. That night, he was on the panel of the ABC’s national current affairs program Q&A. Mr Hunt, who has held Flinders since 2001, and is the Opposition’s spokesman for environment and climate action, spoke on a range of issues including the economy and asylum seekers. Interviewed by radio host Jon Faine on 774, Mr Hunt spoke about the dire circumstances surrounding asylum seekers drowning in vessels at sea while attempting to reach Australia. “We’ve lost at least 1100 souls, 1100 lives. That is a human catastrophe of the most extraordinary proportions.” Mr Hunt delivered a scathing assessment of Mr Rudd, saying he was unfit to tackle the issue. He accused Mr Rudd of being untrustworthy, saying a Coalition government was in a better position to manage the nation. Responding to an audience member’s question on Q&A about whether Tony Abbott could engage with young people the way Kevin Rudd has been seen to do, Mr Hunt suggested young people were not swayed by Mr Rudd’s social media activity on platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
“He is the fake tan of Australian politics and it washes off overnight. Young people are onto him because they know they want jobs in the future and they don’t want to have debt,” Mr Hunt said. He said the next generation was “deeply switched on about long-term issues”. “Yes, they are on Twitter and they are engaged in social media,” he told Q&A’s Sydney audience, “but at the end of the day this is such a smart generation and they know that they want substance and things that will last. They care about the long term and the things that they talk about are jobs and debt.” According to Mr Hunt, the Coalition had a “clear national plan” to fix what he said was Labor’s “$30 billion debt”. The current government had delivered “eight consecutive [budget] deficits”, and a Coalition government would “live within our means” to return the budget to surplus. “Australia started the global financial crisis two laps in front of everybody else. We are now half a lap in front.” While his media appearances made no reference to local initiatives on the Mornington Peninsula, Mr Hunt issued a media release early on Monday detailing his election platform for the Flinders electorate, much of which discussed initiatives under state and local government control. Mr Hunt pledged to “ensure the community’s voice is heard on the Arthurs Seat tip issue” and “secure aquatic centres for Rosebud and Phil-

lip Island”, neither of which directly involve federal government. The planning laws for these projects are governed by local government, with some overlap at state level for environmental regulation. The list also included law and order, with plans to “improve community safety at Hastings” and “complete work on a 24-hour police station for Somerville, Baxter and Pearcedale”. The station will be built in Somerville on the corner of Coolart Rd and

Eramosa Rd West It is unclear what contribution Mr Hunt would make to the projects, given the state government earlier this year promised to construct a 24-hour police station in Somerville, setting aside $12 million in its 2013-14 budget for this and other police stations across the state. Mr Hunt’s other initiatives include prioritising high-speed broadband for peninsula residents and securing funds for the Coalition’s so-called Green
Army, which seeks to engage young people in conservation work. Mr Hunt is being challenged by Labor candidate Josh Sinclair and the Greens’ Martin Rush in the seat of Flinders, where he has a 9.1 per cent margin according to ABC polling data. At the 2010 election, Mr Hunt gained 54.3 per cent of the primary vote, which translated to 59.1 per cent after distribution of preferences. See “Greens candidate slams tip” on Page 16.

West Park safety fears addressed By Chris Brennan WEST Park Reserve in Hastings will receive a $120,000 facelift under a state government and Mornington Peninsula Shire plan that aims to improve safety and create a more a family friendly environment. The reserve, part of the West Park estate, which includes a significant number of public housing properties, is considered unsafe by many residents, particularly at night, and is blighted by graffiti and a lack of amenities such as tables and seats. News of the planned upgrade follows hot on the heels of last week’s public safety meeting in Hastings when community leaders drew up a list of security measures to address public concerns following the stabbing death of jeweller Dermot O’Toole. Improvements to the under-utilised West Park public precinct will include more lights and seats, upgrades to paths, the installation of community art and creation of a “village green communal meeting place. The state government will provide $80,000 for the works under the Neighbourhood Renewal funding program and the shire will contribute $40,000. Hastings MP Neale Burgess, who announced the redevelopment last Thursday, said the project had received state funding due to the strong input and support of residents and
community leaders. “A large part of Neighbourhood Renewal involved local people coming up with solutions for local problems and this is exactly what has happened in Hastings, Mr Burgess said. “Residents said they did not feel comfortable using West Park Reserve in its current state, due to a lack of adequate lighting, ageing pathways, no seats or tables and past instances of vandalism. “The government, working with the council and local people, has come up with a plan to improve access to the park, increase use and amenity, and improve residents’ feelings of safety. I look forward to seeing West Park Reserve grow and thrive. State Housing Minister Wendy Lovell said that while the Neighbourhood Renewal program had ended in June after eight years, financing had been extended through the government’s Flexible Funding Projects. Ms Lovell said the work undertaken through the Neighbourhood Renewal program would be continued through the development of a Community Action Plan, overseen by Hastings Community Alliance. Area councillor David Garnock said safety issues affecting West Park Reserve had long been identified by the council and residents, and CCTV cameras had already been installed. “There have been a number of issues raised by the [Community Safety] Committee, mainly to do with

safety at night and the lack of lighting, Cr Garnock said. “Some would say it has been a significant problem – it’s certainly a problem. There’s some problem with motorbikes and gangs of youth running around at night. There’s been some smashed windows, people throwing rocks and knocking out lights and that sort of thing. Cr Garnock said news of the funding would come as welcome news to the safety committee, which had developed an action plan calling for CCTV cameras, adequate lights in public spaces, graffiti removal and park clean-ups.

“This is good news. It brings forward council plans for addressing these concerns,â€? he said. “It’s really the central hub of the whole West Park community. This is going to really improve the safety and amenity of the area, and make it a much more attractive and usable space for the whole community. “I’m delighted that not only are we getting backing from the state government but also support from the council.â€? Improvements to the reserve will include: ď Ž Installation of lights along the central pathway through the reserve.
ď Ž Extending existing lights to include the pathway between Hastings West Park Primary School and Wallaroo Community Hub to provide a connecting pedestrian and cycle link through the park to the taxi rank, bus stop and shop. ď Ž Improvements to the network of paths, including resurfacing. ď Ž Installation of seats and tables in the park. ď Ž Indigenous plantings and landscaping to enhance the park and reduce the incidence of graffiti on the perimeter fences. ď Ž Creation of a central recreational community space or village green.

Doco makers dive in to save a reef By Keith Platt ONE of the world’s greatest coral reefs is under threat from pollution. Governments have bent over backwards to help developers build highrise resorts over pristine beaches. A four-lane highway had been built and an international airport is on the drawing board. The storyline has a familiar ring, but this reef lies off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, not far north Queensland. Stacey Chilcott of Hastings and Jesse Lee of Balnarring want to make a documentary to spread the word about the threats to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System and the freshwater aquifers that run under the peninsula into the sea.
The two former Western Port Secondary College students have already made a small documentary, which, after being loaded onto YouTube and shown at the Port Fairy Film Festival, helped persuade the ABC’s Foreign Correspondent program to run a report. Ms Chilcott, a freshwater biologist who investigated the impact of climate and land use change on aquatic organisms in the caves of southwest Western Australia, became alarmed about the effects of pollution on the tourist drawcard Riviera Maya after winning a scholarship to Mexico in 2010. In Mexico she worked as a researcher with conservationists on the Yucatan Peninsula to protect the freshwater, marine and terrestrial

water biologist Django Van Tholen of Warrnambool and Mr Lee to make a full-length documentary. “We’ll be filming at the Ninth National Assembly of Environmentally Affected Peoples and will also conduct interviews with world renowned speakers on the environmental, social and economic impacts of the largescale developments,” Ms Chilcott said. Mr Lee, who edited the YouTube clip, will be director of photography. The filmmakers are heading to Mexico at the end of the month and while they have “a lot of support”, they are trying to raise $5000 to increase the film’s production values through the internet-based money-raising site www.pozible.com/project/29553

“After speaking with concerned residents of Riviera Maya, I became aware the only way to achieve support was to push for international awareness.” Before returning to Australia, Ms Chilcott filmed interviews with locals, whose lives and livelihoods stood to be detrimentally affected if the ecosystem was damaged. Official brochures for the region carry the motto “Paradise is Forever”, along with many pictures of turquoise seas, reef fish, and divers in the underground Riviera Maya and Mayan ruins. Ms Chilcott said the Foreign Correspondent report (aired in February) “was a really inspirational moment” and prompted her and fellow fresh-

ecosystems threatened by the “megaresort developments resulting from the booming tourism industry”. “Apart from the obvious physical devastation caused by the development of these massive resorts, they also release a huge amount of domestic waste such as sewage and herbicidal pollutants from golf course maintenance that goes directly into underground rivers, which is the only drinking water supply for the area,” Ms Chilcott said. “The Mexican government does not want to protect the area as it is in a primary economic development area as a result of the breathtaking natural beauty. Backyard snapshot shows it’s wild out there at night MOTION-activated infrared cameras will be placed on the properties of Western Port landowners to capture images of animals roaming the region under a new high-tech wildlife preservation project. Owners of land in Tyabb, Baxter, Somerville and Hastings with bushland on their property are being invited to sign up to the “Who’s on my block?â€? initiative. Cameras will be placed on landowners’ properties over a four- to six-week period to enable images of fauna active at nighttime to be captured. They will be rotated between properties over the duration of the project to provide the widest possible snapshot of nocturnal wildlife activity. Informal slide nights will be held to enable participants to share their findings. Mornington Peninsula Landcare facilitator Jacqui Salter said the project would “connect local landholders to their land and encourage them to value the important role it provides in terms of habitat for indigenous fauna. “The project provides an impetus for community members to take positive action to preserve and enhance their local environment,â€? Dr Salter said. “It is a great educational opportunity for children to be involved in the monitoring and viewing of images, providing an opportunity for families to share the excitement of fauna monitoring.â€? Cameras have already been installed on seven properties in Somerville and Baxter, with koalas, ringtail and brushtail possums, wrens and wallabies been captured on film. “There have also been foxes, rabbits and rats captured on the cameras, including many minutes of footage of a fox eating a possum,â€? Dr Salter said. “Such footage highlights to property owners the need to control feral animals to preserve the populations of indigenous fauna.â€? She said the project would also help social connections by providing an opportunity for people to meet their neighbours and share in their “exciting findingsâ€?. “The project will reconnect people to the land ‌ and highlights the important ecological assets they have on their property and identifies some of the threats.â€?

Three-year plans for ‘safety’ burns AREAS on the Mornington Peninsula and Frankston are listed for burning over the next three years by the Department of Environment and Primary Industries. Plans for the proposed burns can be found on the DEPI’s website and go from the end of the peninsula at Portsea to Frankston North. “DEPI and Parks Victoria carry out fuel reduction activities on public land across the state to reduce the negative impact of possible bushfires” Mornington MP David Morris said. “Each DEPI fire district has drafted a plan that shows where planned burns and other works, including slashing and fire break construction, will be carried out over the next three years, subject to weather and fire conditions. “The peninsula retains its rural feel, but our population has grown. Some of the works may be carried out close to communities and I encourage all residents to take a look at the draft plans to see what is proposed.” Areas to be burned shown on the plan include Greens Bush at Cape Schanck, French Island, Sorrento, Portsea, St

Andrews, Rosebud, Arthurs Seat, Bittern, Balnarring, Main Ridge, Somerville, Frankston North, Frankston and Langwarrin. “The plans are shaped by discussions DEPI has had with Victorian communities and stakeholders such as the CFA, councils, Melbourne Water, forest managers, and flora and fauna specialists,” Environment and Climate Change Minister Ryan Smith said. “We want to minimise the impact planned burning may have on communities, businesses and our environment as much as possible but ultimately the decision to burn is always driven by the need to reduce bushfire risk to human life and property as the highest priority.” Mr Smith said the 2012-13 bushfires reduced fuel hazards on about 165,000 hectares of public land that was classed as suitable for planned burning and “has been factored into our planning”. In the past more than 253,000 hectares of land was burned to reduce bushfire risks. Draft plans are on display until 31 August at www.depi.vic.gov.au/burns
PUPILS at Balnarring Primary School were given something to chew over on Thursday when oral health therapist Christie Nagel brought good advice, balloons and showbags. Ms Nagel, of Hastings Family Dental Care, gave practical advice on how to keep teeth healthy along with the need for regular dental checks. And the showbags? LETTER Marginal vote NEXT year [Flinders MP] Greg Hunt and the Liberals will celebrate a 30-year reign in the Flinders electorate. Congratulations to them for this. I don’t think the people will be celebrating, though. In that period our Liberal MPs have been both in power and in opposition with no difference in the benefits to Flinders electorate. Perhaps it is not the government we choose that benefits our beautiful peninsula but the individual who is representing us? Or perhaps it is the margin the seat is held by? This election, we need to “make Flinders marginal” to get the most gain. But how can we do this? One way is for each two-voter family to give one vote to Liberal and one to Labor. Mr Hunt could potentially regain his seat by a small majority, making any federal government take notice of us in the budget. Or maybe it’s time for real change and to vote in a new MP willing to fight for things like an improved public transport system so badly needed on the peninsula. Flinders deserves more. Regardless of which party is in government, let history show if we do not shake things up locally, we will not get anything significant. Steve Hosking, Tyabb Editor’s note: Steve Hosking was the Labor candidate for the state seat of Hastings in 2010. He was defeated by the Liberals’ Neale Burgess. Tall ships on the horizon By Mike Hast EIGHT tall ships sail into Port Phillip in early September for the Melbourne International Tall Ship Festival. Mornington Peninsula residents will have the best seats in the house as the ships enter The Heads and sail up the South Channel, turning toward Melbourne at Hovell Pile just a few hundred metres off the end of Rosebud pier. It will be the largest fleet of tall ships to visit Melbourne since the bicentenary in 1988. Lord Nelson will be first to arrive on 6 September after sailing from the United Kingdom via Fremantle to the festival site at Williamstown. She will be followed next day by three Dutch ships – Europa, Oosterschelde and Tecla – from the Netherlands via Fremantle and Adelaide. On 8 September, KRI Dewaruci arrives from Indonesia via Fremantle, Young Endeavour from Sydney and Windeward Bound from Hobart, to be joined next day by Soren Larsen from Sydney. They will be joined by Melbournebased Enterprize. The fleet leaves Melbourne for festivals in Hobart, Sydney and Auckland at 10am on Saturday 14 September and is expected to anchor overnight off Capel Sound between Rosebud West and Tootgarook before sailing through The Heads at high tide on Sunday 15. Some ships are selling berths on the voyage to Melbourne and there will be day trips on Thursday 12 September. David Wharington, a peninsula

resident and founding member of Tall Ships Victoria, said Lord Nelson would likely attract the most attention as it was designed to be sailed by
people with disabilities. “Usually about half the crew have disabilities. Lord Nelson has several innovations to cater for this. For ex-
ample, the steering compass makes a sound so that completely blind people can steer. The bowsprit is wide enough to take a wheelchair,” he said. The genesis of the Melbourne festival as well as similar events between July and October in Fremantle, Adelaide, Hobart, Sydney and Auckland was when the Royal Australian Navy invited 50 nations to send warships and tall ship to Sydney for the International Fleet Review in October to commemorate the centenary of the first entry of the RAN’s fleet into Sydney. About 40 warships and 20 tall ships will participate. Tall Ships Victoria president Peter Harris, who is also in charge of the restoration of Alma Doepel at Victoria Harbour in Melbourne, said tall ships from the northern hemisphere rarely visit Australia. Stephen Moss, president of the Australian Sail Training Association said, it would be the largest gathering of tall ships in Australia and New Zealand for a generation. The Melbourne festival is a joint venture of Tall Ships Victoria, Seaworks Foundation, Royal Yacht Club of Victoria, the Victorian sailing community and Hobsons Bay City Council. At least five ships will be berthed at Seaworks. Rubber roundabout for dangerous intersection WORK is underway to build a rubber, temporary roundabout at the “black spot” intersection of Boes and Graydens roads in Hastings. Boes Rd will be closed between Hodgins and Graydens roads except to local residents during installation. Work is expected to take a week with 40km/h speed restrictions on the other three roads leading to the intersection. Planning, approvals and detailed design for construction of the permanent roundabout have started, although it will take 12-18 months to complete, Mornington Peninsula Shire said. Improved lighting and removal of pine trees on Graydens Rd was also planned.
Daffodil walk THE fourth annual Daffodil Day Walk is at The Briars Park in Mt Martha from 9.30-11am on Friday 23 August. Visitors can see Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Eco Living Display Centre while raising funds for cancer research, prevention and support services. Book on 5975 0133.
Health network accredited PENINSULA Health has “come through with flying colours” and been accredited under the new National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards. State Health Minister David Davis said Peninsula Health underwent a mid-cycle survey examination in May “and the report confirmed it met all the requirements of the survey and maintained its accreditation status until the next assessment”. Mr Davis said “stellar results” included patientcentred care; multi-disciplinary teamwork; energetic and innovative culture; leadership that was evident at every level; and an extensive program of consumer involvement; and dedication to patients.
Key indicators assessed for accreditation range from infection prevention, patient identification and managing pressure injuries to medication safety, clinical handover and responding to clinical deterioration.
‘Action’ for disabled A FOUR-year disability action plan for the peninsula is aimed at improving accessibility, says Mornington Peninsula Shire mayor Cr Lynn Bowden. The plan lists “key actions” as: Expanding the shire’s dial-a-bus service to provide transport for older, socially disadvantaged residents. Working toward new website accessibility standards. Investigating facilities, programs and support services to assist young people with a disability to access after-school and vacation care. Create a resource guide to support people with a disability and carers. “With one in four people living with a disability, the plan provides an opportunity for improving accessibility across the shire for residents and visitors,” Cr Bowden said. A summary of the plan is online at www.mornpen.vic.gov.au or order a hard copy by calling 5950 1000 or 1300 850 600.

K-Rudd zips in to back ALP’s Dunkley push By Toni Brient HE recently referred to himself as the “the glasses-wearing kid in the library”, but Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s reception at Langwarrin Park Primary School on Friday was more akin to that of a rock star. Flanked by Labor party “minders” and school officials, Mr Rudd arrived in a government vehicle to a group of waiting children chanting his name. At least 50 media people looked on as Langwarrin Park principal Ray Flanagan welcomed Mr Rudd and local ALP candidate Sonya Kilkenny to a school full of visibly star-struck pupils and teachers on the fifth day of the federal election campaign. Mr Rudd’s appearance in Dunkley followed a visit on Thursday by former Liberal PM John Howard, accompanying sitting Liberal MP Bruce Billson on a day of campaigning in one of the nation’s most marginal seats. Ms Kilkenny – a lawyer, mother of a young son and Seaford resident – has been busy in the community during the election campaign, appearing at shopping centres in addition to using Facebook, Twitter and an iPhone app to connect with constituents. Her official campaign launch was held at Frankston’s Long Island Golf Club on Thursday night. Mr Rudd’s visit gathered huge attention, not only from national media outlets but also in the community. The crowd size was impressive given the news of Mr Rudd’s visit only reached the electorate late on Thursday. “We only found out that he was coming yesterday afternoon,” school captain Kaytlan Gray said.
Key seat: Kevin Rudd and Langwarrin pupils bash out a tune during the PM’s visit to the marginal seat of Dunkley. Below right, a Bruce Billson billboard was repeatedly driven past the school during Mr Rudd’s visit. Pictures: Gary Sissons
“When we told our class, no one believed us,” school captain Mitch Charles said. “They only believed us when Mr Flanagan made an announcement; then they were really excited.” Mr Flanagan and the school captains escorted Mr Rudd as he made his way through the school’s corridors very slowly, partly because he left no small hand unshaken and partly because the media frenzy surrounding him prevented anything faster than shuffling. A light was almost broken by one TV crew’s boom microphone, while Canberra photojournalist Mike Bowers growled at a few cameramen for almost hitting children’s heads with their equipment. But it was the smaller cameras Mr Rudd clearly focused on, obliging anyone who asked for one of his famous “selfies”.
It seemed the common school rule banning the use of mobile phones was temporarily lifted. There was some discussion among students about starting a “hashtag” on photo-sharing network Instagram to track the photographs. “My friends were actually talking about ‘#selfiewithKevin’ last night,” Kaytlan Gray said. Mr Rudd held Prep class chickens, listened to music performances by pupils, and watched grade six students tutor younger pupils. But according to the school, it was business as usual. “We didn’t do anything different,” Mr Flanagan said. “It was just a normal Friday morning. The only thing we did differently was that [the media] couldn’t film in the music room so we pulled our bands out into the foyer.”
The media-savvy PM was careful to reiterate Labor’s contribution to the school’s recent refurbishments. “This is the library that we built, is it?” Mr Rudd asked Mr Flanagan more than once, referring to the government’s 2012 Building the Education Revolution scheme, which helped the school to overhaul its main buildings. “We modified about a dozen classrooms and we also built that library and computer lab,” Mr Flanagan said. Mr Flanagan said he was thrilled with the government’s new Better Schools (previously Gonski) funding plan, which will provide $6.8 million to Victorian schools. “This school should receive an extra $3.8 million over the next six years as a result of this new investment,” Mr Rudd told the media in a press conference broadcast live from the school’s library. “That helps provide more one-onone attention for kids whether they are littlies who might be having a bit of a problem with their literacy and numeracy or kids who are being held back a
bit because they are bursting with energy and enthusiasm to learn things.” The Better Schools plan was highlighted by Ms Kilkenny as a priority for Dunkley. She did not discuss any other local initiatives, and instead told The News that education was her primary concern for the campaign. “A very important issue [for locals] is education and that’s why I was so pleased that we could get the Prime Minister down for the day to one of our schools,” she said. Although the Coalition has indicated it would honour any agreements reached by the current government under the Better Schools plan, Ms Kilkenny suggested the funding may not be secure. “Our kids down here in Dunkley deserve 100 per cent commitment to Better Schools. That’s what I’m out here fighting for.” Ms Kilkenny was expected to address the media in the press conference, but journalists’ questions for Mr Rudd ran overtime and, as usual, he had to “zip”.

Greens candidate slams tip By Mike Hast RETIRED pharmacologist Dr Martin Rush is the Australian Greens candidate for Flinders at the 7 September election. Dr Rush (pictured) was a last-minute candidate after Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced the election date on Sunday. The Greens man wasted no time commenting on peninsula issues, slamming the proposed rubbish tip on the Arthurs Seat escarpment at Dromana. Dr Rush said he was “particularly concerned about the proposed development of the rubbish tip adjacent to Arthurs Seat State Park, the future of Hastings as a port and its impact on Western Port wetlands and marine sanctuaries, the despoilment of the Tootgarook Swamp by inappropriate development, and the general running down of public health, education and public transport services by out-of-touch governments at both state and federal levels”. “The Greens’ recent success in state and local elections indicates voters are looking for a political party that will represent the community, stand up for what’s right, and not be influenced by developers, industry or other unrepresentative pressure groups, at the expense of the ordinary person,” he said. “Many federal issues require a Greens member of parliament to be actively in there representing Flinders voters, but one issue particularly stands out – the Greens strongly support more than 20,000 people opposing the tip planned for Dromana. “The Greens want clean air, clean water and a healthy environment. The Greens federal waste management policy is clear – processes should adopt a zero waste goal to conserve natural resources for future generations, avoid the build-up of toxic and noxious substances, conserve water and achieve deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.” He said the proposal for a rubbish tip in the
former Pioneer quarry was “a poorly conceived plan and the very real threat to the pristine environment that the Mornington Peninsula enjoys”. “The quarry should never have been listed as a site for a future tip. “The proposed tip is completely inappropriate against all waste management principles. Among many problems, it has no recycling facility, has a high risk of polluting the state park, air, groundwater and Port Phillip itself, is in a high fire danger area and is in an area with threatened native flora and fauna. “Technologies are now available and are being used that render tips such as this redundant. “The Greens policy is the most forward-thinking political strategy on this issue. “We believe that: 1. Avoiding, reducing, reusing and recycling waste is integral to effective waste management and to achieving zero waste. 2. Waste should be treated as a resource and reused in a way that achieves the maximum economic and environmental benefit. 3. The full social, environmental and economic costs must be measured and factored in to decisions about creating, managing and disposing of waste.
4. The transportation of hazardous waste must be minimised, and the Australian community must be fully informed about its location, disposal and transportation. 5. Manufacturers, distributors and retailers should be required to adopt extended producer responsibility, taking financial and/or physical responsibility for a product at the end of its life.” The father of two and grandfather of four stood in the state election in 2010 in Mornington electorate, up against the Liberal Party’s sitting MP David Morris and the ALP’s James Dooley, now a Frankston councillor. Mr Rush had less than four weeks to campaign in Mornington as the Greens were unable to find a candidate. Dr Rush is taking on incumbent Greg Hunt, the Opposition’s spokesman on the environment and climate action, and Labor’s Joshua Sinclair. The Greens man has a PhD in pharmacology and is a life member and fellow of the Institute of Public Administration, Victoria. He lives in Mornington and is a member of several community groups including environment and historical groups and a foreshore restoration group. Dr Rush said his passions were “ethical politics, the economy, the environment and singing with choral group Mornington Musicale”. A long-standing member of the Greens, Dr Rush is on the party’s state council, convenor of the disputes panel and a member of the Greens’ constitutional review panel. He said the issues that inspired him to stand included “local community influence in environmental planning processes; education being given top priority for our children’s future; better public transport services for all; hospitals and community health services being accessible and affordable; and humane approaches to refugee assessment and resettlement”.
EPA meeting for quarry tip PENINSULA Community Theatre in Mornington will be packed to the rafters on Wednesday night for the Environment Protection Authority’s conference to discuss the proposed rubbish tip at Dromana. More than 850 people have objected to the Peninsula Waste Management proposal but not all are expected to speak. The conference runs from 6.30-9pm at the theatre on the corner of Nerpean Highway and Wilsons Rd. Tim Eaton, the EPA’s manager of development assessments, said the meeting would “enhance understanding of the proposal and any issues and concerns from all perspectives”. He said the EPA would answer questions about the policies and process affecting the decision on the works approval. “Submitters will highlight key concerns and questions about the application and raise additional matters relevant to EPA’s assessment.” Peninsula Waste Management executives Vince Latham and David Maltby would clarify details of the proposed works and “explain how the concerns may be addressed”. The meeting will be chaired by independent facilitator Bruce Turner with support from Kimbra White. Late last month the EPA asked Peninsula Waste Management to provide additional information for 26 areas of concerns in its works approval application including ground water, leachate pumping, noise, fire management, air quality, the quarry liner, the tip’s impact on Sheepwash Creek (which runs into Port Phillip at Safety Beach), impact on flora and fauna, landfill gas and asbestos. One of the perks of life DELIVERING an inspiring 186 square metres of exquisite living space, this contemporary townhouse is well-suited to the executive couple, with Main St shops and cafes close by, as well as Fishermans Beach. The impressive street frontage creates a fantastic first impression with its striking façade. Once through the trendy red front door, the gleaming tiled interior instantly hallmarks the home as one of quality. At ground level is a vast open-plan living area incorporating a brilliant kitchen with granite topped island bench and stainless-steel appliances, including a dishwasher and under-bench oven. The kitchen overlooks a dining and lounge area that has stylish downlights throughout. Opening from here is a sensational Asian-inspired courtyard that creates picture-perfect and relaxing surrounds as you sit in air-conditioned comfort. Paved with crushed aggregate rock, the private courtyard caters for intimate dinner parties of six or more, surrounded by lush, plants and ferns. Upstairs are three bedrooms, including the main bedroom with ensuite and a glimpse of the bay. A second living area at the top of the stairs would be perfect for a library. There is internal access from the double garage. The property is set on a 300-square metre block and is on its own title.

HEALTH By age six, half of all Australian children will have tooth decay TOOTH decay is the single-most common preventable disease affecting children today despite water fluoridation and general awareness of oral health. To promote Dental Health Week, oral health therapist Christie Nagel attended local primary schools to “to show and tell” and give the children a toothbrush and toothpaste. At Hastings Dental we are concerned as health professionals about the number of children we are seeing daily with several cavities in their teeth.
As part of Dental Health Week we would like to draw attention to children’s oral health in particular and the need for parents to play an active role in helping their children with tooth brushing, using a fluoride toothpaste and limiting sweet snacks. Children and adults alike can experience dental disease at any age and although we are more than happy to help out, we would actually love it if we could help by turning the focus towards a “prevention is better than cure” mindset.

100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...
Mornington in protest over train service, councillors lobby for bridge Compiled by Matt Vowell From the pages of the Mornington Standard, 16 August 1913. FOR some time, dissatisfaction has been expressed in Mornington with the inadequate local train service, and a petition is being prepared for presentation to the Minister of Railways. It is probable that a public meeting will also be held. It is felt that the present railway arrangements are a serious handicap to the progress of the town. *** AT the last meeting of the Frankston and Hastings Shire Council, Major Campbell, representing the users of the main Melbourne Road, asked the Council to approach the Dandenong Shire, with a view to having the approaches to the Carrum bridge metalled and properly screened, and he was empowered to offer £5 towards the cost of the work. Cr Ritchie said the offer was a liberal one, and he moved that the Council co-operate with the users of the road, and ask the Dandenong Council to effect repairs. Cr Cole seconded the motion, and it was carried. *** MR D. Edelsten, optician, will visit Mornington on Monday 18th and will be pleased to meet clients at the Pharmacy, Main Road, from 10 to 4. *** SKATING has again revived in Mornington. There was a splendid attendance at the rink on Saturday night last. *** MR J. Nott Marsh returned to Frankston on Thursday, after an extensive business trip to Tasmania. *** THE secretary of the Frankston Foot-
ball Club acknowledges with thanks a donation of £1 1s towards the club from Mr H. Garrodd. *** THE secretary of the bazaar in aid of the Frankston Brass Band will be pleased to receive donations of any description in aid of the bazaar, to be held in September. *** MR C. Graves, commission agent, of Mornington, is on a three weeks’ tour at Swan Hill, in the Northern District. *** MR Walter Jennings will sing “Love is Waiting,” by special request, at the Frankston Choral Society’s concert on mid-August 30. *** WE are sorry to inform our readers that Miss Morris, head teacher of the Moorooduc State School, has been confined to her bed for a few days, owing to a severe cold. *** MR D. P. Cain notifies by advertisement that he will make weekly trips to and from Melbourne and Frankston, when he will undertake carrying of every description. *** THE meeting day of the Frankston and Hastings Shire Council was again altered on Thursday, 7th inst., when, on the motion of Crs Hodgins and Cole, the first Thursday in the month was fixed. *** MR George Thornell, late of Somerville, retired nurseryman, left real estate valued at £2,300 and personal property valued at £265 to his children. *** “IF you can’t get the levels for your
footpath fixed, apply to the Council, and if no option is taken in two months do the work yourself, and if the Council interferes tell them to go and have a bath!” - Mr M. Clements’ advice to ratepayers. *** MR C. P. Watson, manager of the Frankston branch of the State Savings Bank, has been granted a fortnight’s leave of absence. During his absence his place will be taken by Mr McNalty. *** MR G. H. Blunden, of Frankston, has disposed of his bakery business to Mr Grant, and by advertisement in another column thanks all Frankston residents for their kindness and patronage, and hopes that the same will be extended to his successor. *** MR Sambell, engineer to the shire of Frankston and Hastings, addressed a meeting of ratepayers in the Frankston Mechanics’ hall on Thursday evening. There was a fair attendance, and Mr Sambell’s outline of the scheme, and his report on work done so far, was listened to attentively. A full report will appear next issue. *** THE delegates appointed from the Mornington, Osborne, and Moorooduc State Schools committees, in conjunction with the Loyal Celebration League delegates, decided, on last Tuesday evening, to apply to the Railway Department for a special excursion train to the Zoological Gardens on Wednesday, 12th November, the train to leave Mornington at 8 a.m. and return at 7.30 p.m. In all probability the fares will be 3s 6d for adults and 1s 1d for children. The guarantee required by the Department of £21 10s
before a special train can be chartered has been kindly offered by Mr Blair (the Mornington delegate.) *** THE advertisement social, held under the auspice of the Ladies’ Guild, on Monday evening, proved to be a very successful and enjoyable entertainment. The form of social was something new for this district, and was very interesting and amusing. There were about sixty pictorial advertisements, with all reading matter detached or covered over, hung round the walls of the hall and all those present were give a sheet of card on which to write down, after guessing, the name of the firm that the advertisement represented. The prize was a handsome E P. ware jam dish, and competitors strained all their powers of knowledge for the hour and a half allowed in which to guess as many as they possibly could. After this was over, a very enjoyable supper, which had been provided by the ladies, was handed round, and then songs and dancing was kept up till the early hours. Musical items were rendered by Miss I. Cole, piano solo; Mrs Woodhouse, song; Mr H. Schmidt, comic song; Misses V. Cole and L. Slocombe, duet. *** WE extend to Mr James Grant and family our sympathy in the sad bereavement they have been called to bear in the loss of Mrs Grant at the age of 44 years. Mrs Grant for some time past has been a great sufferer and her end was not unexpected. The funeral left the residence of Mr H. Gumble, the undertaker, on Sunday last, at 3.30 o’clock, for the Frankston cemetery, where he Rev Robert Jackson conducted the burial service in place
of the Rev Mr Butchers, who was unavoidably absent. There was a very large attendance of local residents, the deceased having been long known and respected in the district. *** A VERY successful concert was given by the Church of England members and their friends on Friday last in the local Mechanics’ Hall. The weather was very wet all the evening, and that had the effect of keeping many away who would otherwise have been present. Rev Mr Eva was in the chair, and a very lengthy programme was rendered. Supper was served at interval time. The first part was contributed by our local and visiting friends. Mr and Mrs Reed sang concertedly, and Mrs Reed and Miss D. Unthank rendered a duet. *** IN our last issue we mentioned that Messrs T. R B Morton and Son would hold a sale at Boneo on the 29th inst., on behalf of Mr Cain. It should have read, on behalf of Mr L. L. Jensen, at Cain’s farm, Boneo. *** MISS Gallivan, the postmistress at Frankston, leaves on Monday for a month’s holiday. During her absence, Mr Percy, of the relieving staff will take charge of the office. *** A FOOTBALL match will be played at Frankston this afternoon between teams representing the Frankston band and the Frankston Football Club. The Frankston juniors journey to Mornington to try conclusions with the locals.

A morning star in our midst By Haydn Godony MORNING Star Estate restaurant is well known as a desired destination for special moments. In February, owner Judy Barrett re-assumed dayto-day control and now offers a more family-friendly eatery, consciously priced to suit. “Our menu is seasonally led and includes as much of Morning Star Estate’s produce as possible, including olives, quinces, lemons, grapes and lots of herbs,” executive chef Richard Keane said. “We are not necessarily a special occasion venue, although we can be, but we also want people to feel comfortable calling in for a dessert and a coffee any time. We are conscious of keeping everything at a friendly price point. “A lot of dishes feature a modern twist on old classics – combinations of favourite flavours, done a little differently. “I like to eat and I enjoy cooking French and Italian – soul food, slow cooked with a lot of love.” Popular mains include the organic, Otways-sourced pork belly, which is steam-baked overnight and then pressed and portioned. Following a brief pan-searing, skin
down to create crackling, the pork is coated with a honey-wine glaze, then partnered with pear and parsnip puree. Matching the meat’s richness, with a contrast of sweet and tart, softly jussimmered shitake mushrooms share the plate. The garnish is red radish, grilled witlof and fresh herbs ($26). The entree tuna is rolled in cracked pepper, sea salt and lemon zest prior to being quickly seared and then rechilled prior to serving thinly sliced. The accompanying panzanala salad contains white anchovies, garlic croutons, torn witlof, fried capers, slow-dried cherry tomatoes and a dollop of gribiche sauce $18. The four-item children’s menu includes a minute steak with fries and seasonal greens $14. Lunch is from Wednesday to Sunday, dinner Friday and Saturday. High tea is available on Sunday afternoons. A Feast and Field festival will feature 5-6 October. Morning Star restaurant is in Sunnyside Rd, Mt Eliza. Call 9787 7760 for more information. Soul food: Morning Star Estate’s executive chef Richard Keane.

The meaning of existence (and other short stories)
By Stuart McCullough
The (mostly) true story of how I challenged a bride to a duel By Stuatr McCullough I SUPPOSE I’d gotten used to it. After several decades with the same name, a simple keystroke error means that I am Stuart no more. It was a mistake that, once made, could never be undone. I was reading something on the internet when a message popped up and informed me that if wanted to continue, I would have to log on. Perplexed, I pushed a button and was informed in no uncertain terms that I was not a registered user. Fearing either deportation or having my kneecaps broken, I entered my contact details in the hope that this would cure my illegal status. There was nary a moment to lose. Nervous seconds passed as the computer contemplated whether to accept my plea for clemency before a message appeared: “Welcome Stuatr.” With the damage well and truly done, there was little I could do but accept the facts as they were. There were no grounds for protest or correction. It was as good as carved in stone. In my haste, I had managed to misspell my own name and there was no going back. For years I was Stuart. From this point on, I am Stuatr. Every morning I receive an email addressed to my new name. I have even started to answer to my mutated moniker. Truth is, I’m kind of getting used to it. There are, I think, some battles that are well and truly worth fighting. Others, however, invite surrender. It’s time to forsake the old nomenclature and embrace my new identity as Stuatr. Most people
only get a new identity after ratting on the mob and in fear of their lives. I should count myself lucky. Clearly, I’ve got work to do. Already I’ve amended my university degrees using nothing more than an extra-sturdy texta. Next, I plan to take a small strip of masking tape and place it over the front of my credit cards and driving licence. All I need to do now is convince others to abandon my old name and accept the new. If Cas-
sius Clay can become Muhammed Ali, then surely I can become Stuatr. If that should prove too difficult, I can always adapt. I have no problem providing a little guidance by calling myself Stuatr (nee Stuart) or, for that matter, the Artist Formerly Known as Stuart. Frankly, I’ve never been that wild about my name anyway. My parents lacked creativity. I would have loved to have had a better, cooler name, like Thor or Snoop Dogg, but it
wasn’t to be. Instead, I was lumbered with Stuart, which is far too prone to undignified shortening. “Stu” should only ever be a kind of meal and the less said about the horror that is “Stuballs”, frankly, the better. I find the latter deeply unflattering, but have been subjected to it at moments when I least expected. Not long after I had started seeing Kate, we were invited to the wedding of one of her closest friends, Bec. Actually, it’s more complicated than that. Originally, only Kate had been invited. It was a little too early and I was regarded, if not with suspicion, then certainly as an unknown quantity. However, closer to the big day the situation must have been subject to reappraisal and, all of a sudden, I was invited. My mission was clear. As ever at the early stage of a relationship, it’s important to be able to attend these marquee events without falling over, vomiting or otherwise doing anything else that would have the effect of bringing a fledgling romance to a screeching halt. We had to get to the ceremony on time. This was crucial for a number of reasons, including that Kate was to be giving a reading. At weddings, you need to be quite judicious about where you sit. Too far up the back and you can barely see or hear anything. Sit right up the front and you displace members of the immediate family who are then likely to gossip about your thoughtlessness for the rest of the evening. We chose somewhere about
the middle and near the aisle. The ceremony was lovely and Kate did a great job at the reading, although I would have preferred something from the Bible or some poetry rather than an excerpt from Jonathan Livingstone Seagull, but it was wonderful nevertheless. The bride and groom kissed and the entire room applauded. As the couple walked down the aisle, they were greeted by well-wishers. As someone who was invited by association, I knew to keep a sensible distance. But as the bride passed by, she leaned over and said, “Thanks for coming, Stu-balls”. Outraged, I knocked over several members of the immediate family before inviting the bride to take it outside to the car park. Given that this was a reception centre, the car park was unusually large, meaning that we would be able to stand at opposite ends without the need for any kind of physical confrontation whatsoever. It was probably just as well. Hand-to-hand combat with the bride may have fatally cruelled my chances of getting cake. Ever since that day, I have wanted to change my name. Now, as fate would have it, that’s exactly what’s happened. Given my time over, I would have gone for something a little more exciting, but those with poor typing skills can’t be choosers. But, if nothing else, no one’s ever going to call me “Stuatr-balls”. Thank goodness for that. stuart@stuartmccullough.com

Rosebud v Pearcedale in sudden death final, Dromana take on Bombers NEPEAN LEAGUE By Andrew ‘Toe Punt’ Kelly ROSEBUD will head into the elimination final against Pearcedale on the weekend full of confidence after thrashing Frankston Bombers on Saturday. Coming off two straight losses at the hands of Sorrento and Dromana, the Buds needed to gain some confidence coming into the most important time of the season. After a tight three quarters, the Buds opened up in the last, booting eight goals to three to run out winners 15.12-100 to 9.8-62. Greg Bentley was a massive inclusion for Rosebud, which ensured it fielded arguably the strongest side of the season. Frankston Bombers went into the match without some of its prime movers, including midfielders Brian O’Carroll, Jason Bedford and Shawn Wilkey as well as bookends Sam Drake and Zac Longham. The Bombers have been touting for the past two weeks that they were going to beat Dromana in the qualifying final this weekend, but losing their past two matches doesn’t give anyone any great confidence. The Bombers were beaten by the last kick of the day against Hastings a fortnight ago and now have been belted by Rosebud to the tune of 40 points. Frankston Bombers had a dream draw this season but the past couple of weeks have brought them back to earth. The Bombers have done nothing this season to suggest they are better than fourth- or fifth-placed Rosebud and Pearcedale. They were lucky to get over the line against the Buds when they met earlier in the season and just scraped home against Pearcedale. There is no question the Bombers are kidding themselves thinking they will push Dromana this weekend. For the Buds, they will be up and raring to go against the Panthers in the do-or-die final.
Shut down: Hastings went down to Dromana by 56 points at home. Picture: Andrew Hurst
Frankston Bombers coach Duncan Proud didn’t use the “resting” of players as an excuse for the big loss. “It’s not a great way to lead into finals,” Proud said. Pearcedale led for most of the game against Rye but couldn’t keep it going till the final siren. The match was a draw after Rye booted 7.11 to 7.5 in the last half. The Panthers led by 24 points at the 10-minute mark of the last quarter but were once again mowed down. Pearcedale’s running speed, or lack of it, is a massive concern. Both sides had plenty of chances to win in the tense final quarter and Rye should have sealed the game but was let down by shocking kicking for goal. In the last stanza, the home side peppered the goals but could only manage 4.7 to 3.2. Adam Kirkwood had a shot from 55 metres after the siren to win the game,
but did not register a score. Darren Booth and Kirkwood were outstanding once against for the Demons while Rhett Sutton and Andrew Dean with three goals were also at their best. Ben Winters-Kerr also booted three majors to be one of his side’s best four-quarter performers. Pat Heijden finished the afternoon with six goals for the Panthers and Ben Cadd contributed three, while Glenn Anderson and Dwayne Bowes collected the top votes for the visitors. Tyabb finished its season in the best possible way, causing a massive upset against Somerville and in doing so avoiding the wooden spoon. The Yabbies trailed by two points at half-time, but kicked clear in the third to lead by eight points at the final change. The last quarter was massive for the Yabbies, who booted six goals to two to win 13.16-94 to 8.14-62.
Matty Dimkos, Jake Anderson, Riley West, John Alexander and Ash Waterstone finished with two goals each for the winners, while Stephen Conlan, Ethan Rahilly and Ben Gould were among the best players. Rhys Palmer booted four for the Eagles and was clearly his side’s best player, and Justin Allsop and Justin Farrelly worked tirelessly. Many eyes will be on the two clubs over the coming months to see who lands the coaching jobs. Sorrento warmed up for yet another tilt at a premiership with a 90-point smashing of Devon Meadows. Leigh Poholke booted a career-high 12 goals for the Sharks to win the Nepean League goalkicking medal, while Cayden Beetham and Scott Cameron completely dominted the match. Brian Wapshott and Craig Thorne were among the best for Devon, and
Aaron Bower finished the season on a high after a great performance. The Sharks went into the match resting a few high fliers but still got the job done, once again proving their dominance in the competition. Dromana went up a gear in the second quarter with eight goals to one to completely shut Hastings out of the contest. Matt Neratzoglou booted three goals for the Tigers, while Paul Minchington celebrated his brother’s feats on Friday night in the AFL with three goals. Darren Minchington made his debut for St Kilda and kicked a goal as well as being “noticed” by Channel 7 commentators. Tony Banks also kicked three goals for the Tigers while Adam Hunter and Terry Wheeler stood out. Colin McVeigh kicked four for the Blues and playing coach Glenn Michie finished with three, proving again that retirement shouldn’t be a consideration for the key position player. Taylor Stratton finished an outstanding season for the Blues, and Michael Cave and Luke Hewitt were also very good. In the final game, Crib Point kicked clear in the second quarter and went on to record a comfortable, 38-point win over Red Hill. The Hillmen booted 5.11 to 11.2 in the second half and would have finished a lot closer had they kicked straighter. Adam Garry finished with four goals for the Hillmen, and Jake Mitchell and Joe Kreiger dominated. Neil Clark finished with five and Jon Flack four goals for the Magpies. James Cook and Brad Davidson were among the Pies’ best. This weekend’s finals Qualifying final: Dromana v Frankston Bomber at Olympic Park Eastbourne Rd, Rosebud. Elimination final: Rosebud v Pearcedale at Crib Point Recreation Reserve, Colin Pde, Crib Point.

Big finish with last round to decide final five PENINSULA LEAGUE By Andrew ‘Toe Punt’ Kelly THE composition of the final five in Peninsula League will be decided in the final round after round 17 was completed on Saturday. The most important game of round 18 will be Pines versus Mornington. Pines Pythons currently hold fifth place with 36 points and a percentage of 97.56. The Pythons had the opportunity to lock in a finals berth on Saturday but were smashed by Edithvale. Mornington is a game behind Pines on 32 points, but has a superior percentage of 108. It also could have grabbed a place in the five on Saturday but was beaten by Langwarrin. Karingal is on the same points as Mornington, but is two per cent behind (106). Bonbeach (second), EdithvaleAspendale (third) and Mt Eliza (fourth) all secured a finals berth on the weekend. The Sharks will finish in second place after getting the job done against the Bulls, restricting them to just two goals, the second week in succession. Edithvale-Aspendale belted Pines and Mt Eliza backed up its great win against YCW last week with a six-goal win over Seaford. Bonbeach is on 44 points, while EdiAsp and Mt Eliza are on 40. This weekend, the Sharks play the dangerous Langwarrin (although a loss for the Sharks will still see them finish second), Edi-Asp plays Frankston YCW (a team it beat first time around) and Mt Eliza takes on Chelsea. A betting man would say Mt Eliza will end up with the double chance.
So it all comes down to the Pines v Mornington and Karingal v Seaford games. If Mornington scrapes over the line against Pines and Karingal smashes Seaford, the Bulls will sneak into the five. If Mornington and Karingal win by similar margins, the Dogs will get in. If Pines beats Mornington, it will finish the seasons of the Dogs and the Bulls. Quite simply, the Pythons need to win. Destiny is in their own hands. On Saturday against Edi-Asp, Pines was handed a footy lesson. At half-time the score was 11.4 to 2.4 and the final margin was 99 points, 23.10-148 to 6.13-49. Brent Bowden booted six and Adam Budge four goals for the Eagles, and Troy Ogier, Tim Mannix and Tim Mavric dominated. The Pythons had no answers. Guy Hendry kicked three goals and Jamie Messina and Shaun White worked tirelessly. Despite the result, it was interesting to note that this time last season, the same teams were fighting to see which one would finish with the wooden spoon. Karingal is in no man’s land after being humiliated by Bonbeach. Before the match, Bulls’ coach Brendan Dunne was confident his side could match the Sharks. However, the Bulls were held goalless in the first three quarters and finished with just two for the match. Shane McDonald kicked five for the Sharks, and Corey McQueen booted three. Dylan Jones and Ricky Ferraro had good games.
Langwarrin took another big scalp on Saturday, this time knocking over Mornington at the kennel, aka Alexandra Park. With everything on the line for the Dogs, the Kangas booted seven goals to three in the last quarter to win 16.19-115 to 13.9-87. The Kangas had 11 goalkickers, Luke Damon the major contributor with three. Dan Riley and Michael Parker shone. Jackson Calder booted five goals to be Mornington’s best, and Daniel Moss also worked hard for four quarters. Frankston YCW warmed up for September with 17 goals in the first half and 16 in the second to smack Chelsea 33.20-218 to 8.6-54. Michael Chaplin booted nine and Ricky Morris five while a further 12 players contributed on the scoreboard. Scott McLeod with four goals against his old side, as well as Tony Lester, were among the best players. Fia Tootoo, Ryan Stewart and Joel Connelly, as they have done all season for the Gulls, flew the flag. Mt Eliza booted 10 goals to five in the second half to record an easy victory over Seaford, 17.15-17 to 11.12-78. Scott Lockwood finished the afternoon with four goals and teenager James Freeman kicked three to be arguably best on ground. Rohan Heasley backed up a dominant performance last week with another great game. Dean Kemble and Aaron Walton were among the best of the Tigers, who led at quarter time and trailed by just nine points at the main interval.

Pines triumphant, Baxter hopes for great escape SOCCER By Craig MacKenzie A MOMENT of Luke Atsiaris magic gave Frankston Pines a 2-1 win over Peninsula Strikers in Saturday’s derby at Monterey Reserve. The win gives Pines important breathing space in the race to avoid relegation while leaving Strikers in last spot on the State 3 South-East ladder. The afternoon unfolded with the referee of the reserves match taking exception to being called a “pedantic twat” by a spectator and stopping the game until the bemused villain was escorted from the venue by Pines’ security. And all this while a band of middleaged musicians grabbed some much needed practice in the club’s social rooms, the strains and pains of their endeavours giving this relegation battle a surreal touch. Normality of sorts returned in the 15th minute of the senior clash when Strikers forward Kristian Miller unleashed a dipping volley that clipped the top of the crossbar and went over. Near the half-hour mark a superb jinking run by livewire Drew Reid could have given Strikers the lead but his attempt to curl the ball with the outside of his right foot on a soft surface sent it wide of the far post. Ed Southerington pinched the ball from the Strikers defence only to shoot over in the 39th minute and six minutes later a superb smother from Strikers goalkeeper Steve Eleftheriou denied Sam Jennens. Six minutes into the second stanza
PAGE 58
Penalty claim: Pines goalkeeper Kris McEvoy clashes with Strikers forward Drew Reid. Picture: Paul Seeley
the deadlock was broken by a long, low, bouncing shot from Pines midfielder Enes Sivic recently recruited from Victorian Premier League outfit Richmond. Miller pounced on a rare mistake from Pines right back Peter Dimcevski in the 54th minute but rushed his angled shot from the left of the penalty area. Enter CJ Hodgson, replacing Southerington in the 60th minute and what a change that was to prove. Strikers levelled with a fine strike from Reid in the 64th minute, fittingly so for the 21-year-old had an excellent game. But eight minutes later a cheeky
Western Port News 13 August 2013
back-heel from super sub Hodgson allowed Atsiaris to pick his spot and he curled a stunning left-foot strike past Eleftheriou and into the far corner to put Pines back in front. Strikers fans were up and about in the 81st minute but loud claims for a penalty following a clash between Reid and Pines custodian Kris McEvoy were waved away by referee John Stathopoulos. Strikers kept pressing as the minutes ticked away but couldn’t find a way past a Pines defence where the central pairing of Michael McCluskey and Mathew Hodgson is proving tough to break down. Pines travel to Heatherton United
this weekend without Dimcevski, who is suspended after accumulating too many yellow cards, but Mario Rivera and Michael Hoogendyk return to the matchday squad. Baxter’s metamorphosis from cannon fodder to serious competitor in State 5 South will near completion if it beats visitor Endeavour Hills at Baxter Park this weekend for a third straight win. There’s nothing like back-to-back 5-1 triumphs to turn a season around and last Saturday’s away trouncing of Parkmore has given coach Michael Steenbergen’s side the chance to fight its way out of relegation, something no-one thought possible after losing its first 13 games of the season and leaking goals in the process. “We’re playing with a lot more spirit now and an example of that is Harry Liapis who is only a little bloke but he’s got a huge heart and he gives you everything out there,” said Steenbergen. Alex Campbell made his first senior appearance this season and had a fine match in a right-sided midfield role. Baxter’s goals came from Shaun Walker (2), David Popa, Dale Nicholson and Justin Brown and Steenbergen’s side can close the gap on 12th-placed Parkmore when it meets Endeavour Hills at Baxter Park on Saturday. Langwarrin turned in one of its better performances of the season only to go down 2-1 to Springvale White Eagles in their State 2 South-East contest at Lawton Park last weekend. Recent signing Grant Karwacinski scored for the home team. The
midfielder has played in England’s Conference Leagues and looks the goods. Stephane Leblond scored a brace for White Eagles, his opener coming from the penalty spot following a decision described as “diabolical” by Langy coach Gus Macleod. Seaford United’s promotion push remained on course when it won 4-0 away from home in last weekend State 4 South clash with Hampton Park United. A low, left-foot drive from Marc Lo-Gnok opened the scoring and a Daniel Hodge header following a corner gave the visitor a comfortable half-time lead. Two second-half strikes from Dave Greening took his tally to 33 goals in 16 games. Seaford squares up to neighbour Skye United at North Seaford Reserve on Saturday. Skye had to settle for a share of the spoils when drawing 1-1 at home with Endeavour United last weekend. Paul McGuire’s conversion from the spot gave the home side the lead at the interval but Endeavour hit back in the second half levelling in the 60th minute and kept Skye at bay for the remainder of the contest. Fixtures for round 18: Saturday, 17 August, 3pm: Langwarrin v Malvern City (Lawton Park), Nunawading City v Peninsula Strikers (Mahoneys Reserve), Heatherton Utd v Frankston Pines (Bosnia and Herzegovina Centre), Seaford v Skye Utd (North Seaford Reserve), Baxter v Endeavour Hills (Baxter Park).

‘Inkers’ magic on plate and great to catch FISHING By Paul “Tracker” Pingiaro SQUID fishing nowadays is winning the sort of following that only snapper generated in the past. From boats to piers to rocks, everybody is out to get inked. And why not? Magic on the plate, failsafe as bait and great to catch, the humble southern calamari has risen to elite status as anglers look for quarry in the season that lies somewhere between snapper, tuna and summer. Gear for squid, or egi, fishing can be as complicated as you want it to be, but anything from a handline to a bait caster in the 3-6kg range will suffice if you’re a weekend or novice angler. Those truly hooked on squid can go all out and rig specifically for them. Prawn imitation jigs are the most popular choice of most anglers, however whole fish baits of silver whiting, grass whiting and garfish are a great option fished under a float and on a traditional pronged jag or barb. Squid like shallow reefs and grass beds in both Western Port and Port Phillip as well as oceanic coastal zones. Often equally targeted off the rocks and piers as well as boats, squid are a genuine target for all anglers throughout the year. Last week all the excitement for boat anglers came from Western Port with snapper and large squid abundant in the top end while sevengill and gummy sharks were also
making their presence felt. Most productive times have been on the change of tide and in the mornings and evenings. For squid, Tyabb Bank has been the hotspot of choice and for snapper, Joe’s Island and Eagle Rock have been a few of the go-to marks. For landlocked anglers, salmon are in good numbers off the peninsula’s back beaches. From piers in Port Phillip, garfish and squid have been in good numbers along with a few salmon. Best results are coming from Blairgowrie, Sorrento, Mornington and Brighton. From boats in Port Phillip there are good numbers of flathead off Mornington, salmon are in some good schools from Mt Martha to Mt Eliza, and there have been a few good catches of squid from Portsea to Mt Eliza. For those after a few pinkie snapper, Brighton is producing some bag limit catches in the evenings on shallow reefs. Paul “Tracker” Pingiaro runs Mornington Boat Hire at Schnapper Point in Mornington and Yaringa Boat Hire at Yaringa boat harbour in Somerville (www.morningtonboathire.com.au or phone 03 5975 5479). He is a travel and fishing writer for several publications, and a former tackle department manager for a major retail chain. Honda CR-V tops the petrol SUV market in Australia THE popular Honda CR-V is the number one selling petrol SUV, outselling all-comers in the highly competitive SUV market in Australia (source VFACTS June 2013) year-to-date. The CR-V has sold 7,462 units yearto-date. The CR-V’s June result of 1,579 units is the second-best sales result in the model’s 16 year history in Australia. “We’re delighted with the CR-V’s sales result this year,” said Honda Australia Director Mr. Stephen Collins. “The CR-V is a fantastic proposition for customers. It’s functional, practical, packed with features and has the latest
safety technology. It’s not hard to see why it’s the most popular petrol SUV in the entire market year-to-date. “In early 2014, we’ll add a diesel variant to the CR-V range, giving customers even more choice,” Mr. Collins said. The CR-V is available in two and four-wheel drive. Standard features include the easy one-touch motion folding rear seats, integrated Bluetooth phone/ audio connectivity, reversing camera, alloy wheels with full-size spare and a huge cargo area. Recently, the CR-V received a further important upgrade with the Advanced
Driver Assist System (ADAS). ADAS is Honda’s state-of-the-art safety technology and is available as a factoryfitted option on the four-wheel drive VTi-L. ADAS features Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS) which is unique to the medium SUV segment, Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). ADAS is designed to complement the driver, not to replace their input. ADAS contributes to active safety while ensuring that the driver remains in control of the vehicle at all times.
