Protest over police moves Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au THE anticipated deployment of muchneeded police from Rosebud to the new station at Somerville has “outraged” residents, with a public meeting organised to protest the moves. Police Association secretary Ron Iddles described the positioning of the new Somerville police station as a “political decision not based on demographics or population growth”. He said the site was chosen after lob-

bying by Hastings MP Neale Burgess. “As the sitting member he was entitled to ask for it to be built there,” Mr Iddles said. He said siting the station away from population areas and the summer hotspots of Rye and Rosebud meant police were too far away from the action. “We are concerned about where police are going to come from to fill the station,” he said. “A 24-hour station requires at least 32 police to man it and we understand that crime scene, criminal investiga-

tion and highway patrol police will be moved from other, smaller stations on the peninsula, such as Hastings. “We’ve been told that detectives from Rosebud will be moving to Somerville – but it is 40 kilometres away from where they will be doing most of their work. If they want to interview a suspect from Rye, for example, they will have to drive to pick him up and then take him to Somerville to do the interview and then drive him back home – about 80 kilometres. It’s all going to take a very long time.”

Mr Burgess said he would attend the meeting “if it goes ahead”. “Our community values its local police officers and local police stations very highly, and it’s fair to say that not everyone fully appreciates how important that relationship is,” he said. “I have been in contact with police from Rosebud and the Police Association to get more details about their concerns. I’ve spoken with Mr Iddles and will be meeting with him over the next week or so.” Rye resident Barry Irving will be

joined by Mr Iddles and his deputy, Bruce McKenzie, at the protest meeting at 7pm, Wednesday 29 October, at Rosebud Memorial Hall. He expects a big crowd to attend. “Residents and business owners in the Rosebud, Rye, Sorrento and Dromana areas are outraged that 30 specialist police officers may be removed from stations in their towns to work out of the new Somerville station more than 40 kilometres away,” Mr Irving said.
