Shelters of hope for young plovers MANY hands were making light work on Friday at the Hastings-based Willum Warrain Aboriginal Association where a workshop was being held to make shelters to protect the endangered hooded plover. The small bird lives and breeds on a few select beaches on the Mornington Peninsula, although its numbers are dwindling each year as fewer eggs are laid and even fewer chicks surviving. However, there are bands of dedicated plover protectors who fence off nests and try to reduce predators. If the chicks do manage to hatch and then leave the nest, this year they may possibly seek shelter under some of the “chick shelters” built at the Willum Warrain workshop under the guidance of Port Phillip and Western Port Catchment Management Authority and members of the Friends of the Hooded Plover group. “Borders of protection for troubled plovers”, Page 11 Picture: Yanni
Mayor offers Paris ‘explanation’ Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire mayor Graham Pittock has invited the public to attend an “open presentation” about the recent Paris climate talks. The invitation posted on the Mornington Peninsula New Group’s Facebook page comes after 17 mostly critical and derisive comments about the shire paying for the mayor to attend the international talks.
However, with the page having more than 29,500 followers, the post could have seriously embarrassing results, with thousands potentially turning up either to hear the mayor discuss a serious topic or to be involved with the “drinks after” part of the invite. The Paris trip has also inflamed already strained relationships between councillors, with Cr Andrew Dixon entering the Facebook fray with a comment under his online persona, “Billy Dixon”. The mayor’s planned presentation
with the added “drinks after”, “explains why the councillors’ lounge has suddenly upgraded from Red Label to Black Label scotch”, according to Billy Dixon. “But hey, at least we're sharing it with the public - see, we've gotta butter you up with expensive free booze (that your rates paid for) so that you'll believe our Paris journey was totally hip and worth it. I'm sure we had a phenomenal impact on global energy policies, but you'll hear all about it at our cute little slideshow,” Billy Dixon’s
post states. Cr Pittock was accompanied to Paris by Cr Hugh Fraser and council staffer Jessica Wingad after the shire was among 10 Australian municipalities invited to attend the United Nations climate change conference (COP21). Ms Wingad, the shire’s renewable resources team leader, was at the conference to “learn of latest global trends and their potential application locally”. The cost of sending her to Paris was about $6000. The climate summit is aimed at getting international agree-

Top of the list attending the summit were national leaders and government ministers, including Australia’s Environment Minister Greg Hunt, who is also the MP for Flinders, the electorate that covers much of the peninsula. Cr Pittock, while still in Paris, issued a news release backing Australia’s stand on tackling climate change as outlined by Mr Hunt (“Mayor backs climate plan at Paris peace talks”, The News 8/12/15). Alarm raised over blocked escape routes David Harrison david@mpnews.com.au FLINDERS and Red Hill residents concerned by predictions of an intense fire danger season are meeting Mornington Peninsula Shire officers to discuss ways of making their communities safer. A blocked escape route is causing a double problem for residents of William and Bourke roads in Red Hill – residents cannot get out and fire vehicles cannot get into the area other than from Arthurs Seat Rd. It is believed the CFA is reluctant to enter parts of the area because of access problems. Twenty local residents met last month to discuss the blocked track that would enable them to reach the safety of the Mornington Flinders Rd at Elizabeth St near Red Hill Consolidated School. Red Hill ward councillor Tim Wood is arranging for both communities to meet shire officers over their issues. In a letter to Cr Wood, Red Hill Community Association chairperson David Maddocks stated residents had “expressed grave concerns about the lack of access/evacuation routes … if Williams Rd was blocked by fire com-
ing from the direction of Arthurs Seat Rd”. It continues: “…[A] section of about 100 metres at the Elizabeth St end has become overgrown with woody weeds and … occupied as a truck parking and storage space. While some years ago this stretch was passable by pedestrians, it is now impassable, even on foot … “As concerns for an exceptionally high risk fire season are mounting, RHCA considers that urgent action be taken to make Bourke Rd accessible at least to the standard of a fire track that can be used by pedestrians and vehicles.” Other Red Hill streets are blocked – as no doubt are others across the shire – or are restricted pedestrian thoroughfares, adding to the burden of staff racing to prepare the shire for the coming fire danger months. While fire authorities’ emphasise residents’ responsibility to leave early on fire Code Red days, with their “Leave and Live” message, the CFA has acknowledged that more than 43 per cent of bushfires are deliberately lit. These random blazes make it virtually impossible for people to execute their fire plans in an orderly way. In such circumstances, evacuation routes could well save lives.
First trees lopped at summit TREE clearing has started to make way for the Skylift and its string of gondolas running up to the summit of Arthurs Seat. The first trees to go were near the summit, opening up the vista and removing what has previously been seen as natural foreground for scenic snapshots. While there is no doubt the $16 million project will proceed, unresolved
matters include the bushfire emergency plan and the final number of trees to be removed. The Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) gave permission for 26 trees to be removed, lopped or pruned. Mornington Peninsula Shire councillors were advised by their officers that Skylift’s “Arboricultural inspection report” identified 82 trees that
may require removal or modifying. The report said 39 trees required removal but the rest would need to be inspected again when the pylons and cables had been built. Councillors were told that “the plan as presented represents a reasonable and practical approach” to corridor clearing “in order to maintain the integrity and safety of the gondola line”. ALMOST 1000 swim school students at Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Pelican Park Recreation Centre played it safe by the water last week for Water Safety Week – 29 November-6 December. “Water Safety Week aims to reduce the number of drownings in Victoria and increase awareness among the Victorian community about water safety,” Cr David Garnock said. “Too many people are still losing
their lives to water or swim-related accidents each year.” During the week, Pelican's WET Skills 4 Life students benefitted from swim instructors setting up several different water environments other than the normal swimming program. “This was a brilliant opportunity for the young swimmers to experience different water situations in a safe environment,” Cr Garnock said. “Activities included learning how
to safely enter water at the beach and into rock pools, survival strokes with clothes on and no goggles and experiencing different open-water scenarios, such as river banks, rips, rescues, lifejackets, swimming between the flags and boat safety. For information on WET Skills 4 Life or other swim programs at Pelican, email meredith.bowers@ mornpen.vic.gov.au
Restaurants help the needy EMERGENCY relief for the homeless on the Mornington Peninsula received a welcome shot in the arm in May with a $5000 grant from StreetSmart. The money allowed Southern Peninsula Community Support and Information Centre to establish a food pantry to assist those at high risk of homelessness, or those that are homeless, with food, medication, transport and other material aid. The pantry provides basic food to make needy people’s lives as comfortable as possible. It assists them to achieve self-reliance, thus encouraging self-determination over their lives. Through the DineSmart campaign restaurants Pizza D’Oh, Blairgowrie, Smokehouse Pizza, Sorrento, and Tucks Ridge Cafe, Red Hill, donated funds to StreetSmart. In the lead-up to the new year, the restaurants are asking each table to add a $2 donation to their bill for those in need. Cafes and restaurants wanting to sign up for DineSmart, or Café Smart – to open 5 August 2016 – can register online at streetsmartaustralia.

More opportunity THE Red Hill Op Shop will increase its opening hours to 1-5pm on Saturday 19 December. The shop at 33 Mechanics Rd, Red Hill, has raised more than $700,000 for Peninsula Home Hospice since opening 30 years ago. Money raised by the shop also goes to CFA brigades and BlazeAid. “We are acutely aware that we are in a high risk bushfire area and could well be impacted by fire ourselves one day,” op shop president Felicity Jackson said. “Hopefully that day will never come, but the better equipped our fire services are, the better for everyone.”

Continued from Page 1 The news release included a description of the National Climate Resilience and Adaptation Strategy supplied by Mr Hunt’s office (see letters Page 44). It also stressed the importance of the talks’ outcome to the shire, which includes 10 per cent of Victoria’s coastline. Cr Pittock used the news release to take a swipe at the state Labor government’s decision to lease the Port of Melbourne and jeopardise the “future port of Hastings”. Late Friday Cr Pittock said climate change is a global issue with local impacts. Although Crs Pittock and Fraser have said they will reimburse any expenses above the limits set by the Local Government Act (essentially $16,000 during their four-year terms), critics claim they should have stayed at home. Comments ranged from the trip – estimated at
$12,000 for the two councillors – being a waste of money and why the shire did not use the internet to access information to imposing parking fees on visitors to the peninsula to the need for footpaths. “Tom Horn” wants a council job because “the perks are awesome”; Leanne Armstrong: “And how exactly does it matter to the rest of Australia to have some egocentric local mayor agreeing with a federal government plan on an international stage?”; David Evans: “Word for word from Hunt’s office. More puppets?”; Helen Gazzara: “It appears then, that while we are able to research it, the local councillors need to spend $12,000 to fly to Paris to find the answers. It is not the destination we object to, but the cost of the journey.” The mayor’s “open presentation” starts 6pm Monday 21 December at the council chambers in Besgrove St, Rosebud.
Uber knockback a blip on the sat-nav Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au MULTINATIONAL ride-sharing company Uber was knocked back from holding an “information session” at Mornington Secondary College last Tuesday evening. The purpose of the session included signing up new drivers. Acting principal Jim Papas confirmed the school had cancelled the booking once it became aware of the recent Melbourne Magistrates’ Court conviction and fine of an UberX driver for operating a commercial passenger vehicle illegally. “We decided not to associate with the service if it is illegal,” he said. Despite the knockback, Uber managed to move its session to The Grand Hotel. Uber spokesperson Katie Curran said: “We have hundreds of partners who live on the Mornington Peninsula and we routinely run information and outreach sessions right across the markets we serve to provide support to our existing driver-partners and help new driver-partners on to the system. “We know that the peninsula has significant transport issues over summer which can lead to people choosing to drink and drive or to walk home on unlit roads. If people have access to safe, reliable and affordable transport, they often make different choices.” Uber’s appearance in Frankston and on the Mornington Peninsula is concerning regular taxi drivers, who

fear their livelihood will further slip away to the hip new service, which doesn’t have their in-built costs (‘Uber’s arrival challenges taxi operators’, The News 20/1/15). It’s especially galling to established licence holders who see their investment falling in value by more than half. Long-standing Mornington taxi driver Ross Sanders is outraged that Uber can “thumb its nose at the rules and regulations and get off scot-free”. He said starting up a regular taxi driver on the peninsula cost $22,703 in licence fees, followed by full insurance and on-road costs, whereas an Uber driver “could start up for free at the drop of a hat”. He claims it is unfair that taxi services, having factored in high-price licences, full driver training and accreditation, comprehensive insurance, GPS, security cameras and tactile signs, can be undermined by a foreign service that moves in for free

and takes away their business. “Uber is a tragedy waiting to happen,” he said. “I carry all the necessary requirements and, if a passenger feels threatened by me, they can call the police and I will be off the road in five minutes. “Yet Uber can hide behind technicalities.” The fining of the UberX driver is cold comfort, too, because it’s believed that Uber pays the fines and the driver is free to break the rules all over again. “In typical fashion, Uber continues to have no regard for the law and encourages others to break the law, putting at risk the safety and wellbeing of both drivers and passengers alike,” he said. A driver for 28 years servicing the eastern side of the peninsula, Mr Sanders said taxis were “up against it”. “We’ve come through the [Allan Fels] taxi reforms and out the other side and now Uber is on the scene and it’s a whole new kettle of fish,” he said.
restaurant Formally MaQuay International Restaurant
Taxi Services Commission chair Graeme Samuel said competition in the taxi and hire car industry “must be done within the confines of the law”. “[The 2 December Melbourne Magistrates’ Court] decision vindicates the actions taken by the TSC to enforce the law as it currently stands,” he said. Despite the use of the term “within the confines of the law”, Mornington Police Senior Sergeant Brett Coloe said the Victorian Taxi Directorate was the responsible authority for managing and enforcing rules regarding Uber drivers – not police. He said Uber “as a body” was not illegal, rather “it’s the actions of the drivers that are illegal”. Senior Sergeant Coloe said the recruitment sessions did “not amount to inciting drivers to break the law”. He was unsure whether Uber passengers – like the drivers – were breaking the law. Mr Samuel said the TSC was com-
mitted to enforcing the law and had acted consistently by holding drivers acting illegally to account. “The TSC will continue to take compliance action against ride-sharing services that are found to be operating illegally.” He said the “wider issue of ride-sharing and its future in Victoria is a policy matter that is being considered by government”. The TSC says it has another 11 matters before the courts for charges similar to the [Uber] matter. Uber says its ride experience “from request to drop-off is geared towards ensuring reliability and safety. “Upon requesting a car, our technology provides the rider with their driver’s name, photograph, licence plate, vehicle type, and a contact number. “The rider can see the car approaching on a map, and share their journey in real time, via app, with others. Both riders and drivers must also provide feedback after each journey.” Mr Sanders said “thousands of families and businesses are being decimated by Uber and are unsure what the government is going to do”. He admitted the uncertainty was costing him financially. Others have been harder hit, with plates costing up to half a million dollars three or four years ago – and regarded as rock-solid investments – now only worth “in the low $200,000s”. That’s if there are any buyers … “We just want police to enforce the law,” he said. “The democracy of the law is that it provides justice for all, equally.”

Riders jump for joy at opening Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au MAIN Ridge Pony Club and Nepean Equestrian Club members were jumping for joy at the opening of their water jump complex at the Main Ridge Equestrian Ground, Baldry’s Rd, Friday. This comes after a year of appealing for help from the community, businesses and organisations for the project which was identified by a government study as an essential component of the environmental protection at the ground. “Its achievement – only 12 months on – is very much thanks to the many partners who came on board, especially businesses and individuals who donated money, materials and/ or labour, to get the job done,” pony club president Dean Jones said. The water jump, with hoof cleaning station, will enhance the cross country course and protect the environmental integrity of the reserve which is bordered on two sides by Greens Bush. “The pony club has been meeting at the ground since 1968 when the land was set aside by the Green family for equestrian use,” Mr Jones said. “Not much has changed in nearly 50 years. The setting is as beautiful as ever, and the cross country jumps just as challenging. “But what has changed is how we look after this special environment, for ourselves and for the future.” The major threat to the ground is from phytophthora cinnamomi, a soilborne water mould producing dieback
Time to give WESTERN Port Christmas Giving Program is preparing to distribute 400 food hampers – more than seven tonnes of food – as well as more than 1000 toys and other gifts to children out of the Hastings hall. Hampers and toys will be distributed to families 10am-3pm today (Tuesday) and Wednesday, with hampers going to singles Thursday morning. Auspiced by Western Port Community Support, the joint venture receives assistance from the Salvation Army, churches, service organisations, businesses, schools and individuals from around the Mornington Peninsula. The program committee hopes to be able to repeat the effort next Christmas and, possibly, expand it. Winners in water: Members of the Peninsula Surfriders Club after their win at Phillip Island, front row from left, president Ben Hallam, Georgia Fish, captain Caiden Fowler, 2015 club champion Mikey Barber, Adam Morris and junior surfer Gully Eelhead; back row ,Mark Howey, senior men’s surfer Andrew Everist, junior reserve Jet Dickinson, Chris Fowler, Haden Forest, coach Lachlan Mc Donald, Ian Burns, Joel Wookey and vicepresident Rob Hanley.
Choppy stylists: Despite the chop, Georgia Fish, far left, and Caiden Fowler make the most of their heats at Phillip Island.
Peninsula surfers’ choppy ride to nationals PENINSULA Surfriders Club on Saturday claimed consecutive titles by winning the Original Source Australian Boardriders Battle at Phillip Island. The event was held at the more protected Smiths Beach due to a large swell and strong onshore winds. PSC won with 5800 points, followed by Portland Boardriders Club, 5025; Phillip Island, 4850; 13th
Beach, 4562; Torquay, 4474; and South West, 3874. Peninsula and Portland will compete in the national finals at Cronulla in January. “It was pretty tense in the Teams final,” PSC team World Surfing League qualifying series surfer Caiden Fowler said. “We were lucky enough to get through some surfers quick towards
the end and everyone did their job. “We are super stoked to go back to the national final in Cronulla. It’s such a good environment and a really good opportunity to represent Peninsula and Victoria.” The peninsula club also claimed a women’s division heat, helped along by Georgia Fish in the teams division. Portland was led by former Rip Curl
Pro Bells Beach finalist, Adam Robertson who scored the second highest wave of the day, a nine point ride in the Teams division. “We are only a small club and we are still in our infancy, but it is a great result for us and the town” Robertson said. “I don’t compete individually anymore, but I am proud of where I grew
up and always happy to put on the jersey for Portland.” Phillip Island surfer Carl Wright claimed the highest wave score of the day (9.17) and won the hack of the day. Results: www.surfingvic.com. No quick fix for power grid COMMENT By David Harrison UNITED Energy recently letterboxed areas of the Mornington Peninsula with a letter informing householders of the diligent work it is doing in supplying safe and reliable power. Some readers were less than impressed. Overnight a power cut had set every electronic clock in the district flashing. Again. Also flashing, at the top of White Hill Rd and at the Red Hill village end of Arthurs Seat Rd, were the large signs advising that power line work was continuing “July to December”. The month had recently been revised from “November”. Will it become “January” in a week or two? About this time it was reported that many kilometres of United Energy overhead power lines needed to be replaced on the peninsula because they posed a bushfire risk. And on December 1 The News reported that “linemen are scrambling to replace up to 30 kilometres of faulty power lines on the Mornington Peninsula amid fears they could cause bushfires”. Several concerned residents wrote to United Energy stating there was “evidence that the ABC [twisted aerial bundled cable] power lines are faulty and explode periodically causing fires”. They said a bushfire on 9 November was “a consequence of a failure of your power lines in Main Creek Rd”. United Energy did not respond to The News before deadline – including questions about the safety of the
ABC cable, some of which is barely five years old and said to have faulty insulation. The company, which is responsible for all the peninsula’s poles and wires, tells a glowing story on its website. Under the heading “Bushfire mitigation” it states: We are committed to operating our network in full compliance with the requirements of the Act and regulations administered by Energy Safe Victoria (ESV). “Due to prevailing weather conditions and country environments conducive to bushfires, we acknowledge the need to act proactively in designing and operating our assets to minimise the possibility of a bushfire ignition. “… [W]e acknowledge our responsibility to the local community to consider all relevant practical technologies available to minimise bushfire risk.” Its website is silent on problems with its poles and wires. Some wires are estimated to be up to 30 years old. It is also silent on what is believed to be a growing power supply crisis in the Blairgowrie-Portsea area. The electricity grid problem coincides with release of a major new study that has found that humans are responsible for some 70 per cent of bushfires in south-east Australia. The International Journal of Wildland Fund stated that population density explained the fire pattern in NSW and Victoria, the ABC reported. "The higher the population density the more ignitions you get," according to lead author Kathryn Collins of the University of Wollongong's centre for
environmental risk management of bushfires. Official data from more than 113,000 bushfires between 1997 and 2009 across the two states indicated that 47 per cent were from accidental causes such as cigarettes, escaped burn-offs and campfires or sparks from equipment or powerlines. Forty per cent were deliberately lit and 13 per cent were caused by lightning strikes, the study found. The cause of 31 per cent of fires was undetermined. The News reported Nepean MP Martin Dixon saying the Red Hill and Main Ridge power lines came from a “faulty batch that had not lasted as long as they were expected to and had already caused fires” – even though extra insulation was supposed to improve their fire safety capabilities. The insulation appeared to be perishing quickly and breaking away and exposing the wires, which he described as “a recipe for disaster”. Mr Dixon, scheduled to get a full briefing from United Energy last week, said he would be seeking to meet Energy and Resources Minister Lily D’Ambrosio and the Ombudsman on the issue. On Friday afternoon Mr Dixon issued the following: “Further to my statements in the Parliament I have had no response from Minister D’Ambrosio in relation to replacing these faulty cables as a priority, and I am still awaiting a more detailed briefing prior to Christmas from United Energy officers.”
Prize moment: Charlotte Heath receives her prize from Hayley Wilson.
On board for success UP and coming skateboarder Charlotte Heath, of Arthur’s Seat, is taking her skating skills to new heights. Last week she received a youth encouragement award after success in the Phruntside Skate Park Jam competition at Mansfield. Charlotte, 8, was presented with her award by Hayley Wilson, under-14 Australian female skateboarding champion. They know each other, with Charlotte skating with her idol for the past season in the North Western Skateboarding Series. Wilson says she sees a future for Charlotte in the sport, with the
youngster able to compete successfully against girls nearly twice her age – after skating for only 10 months. Charlotte says she loves skating and dreams of being in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics representing Australia, but, right now, she’s just enjoying learning new tricks every week with her coach Craig Mitchell, of Progressive Skateboarding lessons, on the Mornington Peninsula. Results for SPL Open Women's division: Hayley Wilson first, Charlotte Heath second and Amelia Hitchcock third. The top three competitors from each state will go into a national series.

Have a safe New Year
Borders of protection for troubled plovers THEY may look like balls of fluff standing on legs thinner than matchsticks, but there are many hands willing to help the endangered hooded plover. It is a bird that nests precariously close to the ocean’s edge and lays a camouflaged egg that is hard to discern from its surroundings on the sand. Also prey to many natural enemies the odds seem stacked against the hooded plover, but as its annual nesting season gets underway concerned plover lovers are erecting fences on beaches and making wooden shelters to provide protection for the anticipated chicks. On Monday members of the Friends of the Hooded Plover group were at Gunnamatta, driving fencing posts into the sand and unrolling wire to keep unwary or careless beachgoers away from nesting birds. Flotsam left behind by the latest high tides show just how close the nests are to being swept away. But year after year the plovers return to this windswept beach, albeit in ever decreasing numbers. Although dogs are banned at Gunnamatta, the chicks and eggs are sought out morsels to foxes, cats, seagulls, magpies and ravens. The previous Friday the Hastingsbased Willum Warrain Aboriginal Association held a workshop to make shelters for the chicks. The workshop was sponsored by the Port Phillip and Western Port Catchment Management Authority and involved Indigenous people and Landcare groups. Keith Platt

Volunteer’s award reward goes to CFA Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au TYABB CFA officer Wayne Etcell is donating the $10,000 he received for winning the Victorian Premier’s Metropolitan Volunteer of the Year – Dame Elisabeth Murdoch Award to the brigade. Mr Etcell, of Somerville, received his award from Victoria Governor Linda Dessau at a ceremony at Government House last week. It is a wonder he had time to attend as his work-load is staggering: the busy 63-year-old audits full time for the Tax Department, puts in almost another week’s voluntary work with the CFA, as a Justice of the Peace and also as a bails justice. Mr Etcell took up the volunteer’s mantle at 16 and remained a member of the Chelsea Surf Life Saving Club for 10 years – two as treasurer – and group leader with 1st Chelsea Scouts for five years, during which time he was assistant district commissioner of leader training.
normal “after work” roster means he is on-call 4pm-midnight week days and 4pm Friday-7pm Sunday as one of only 77 bails justices in the state. His patch extends from Dandenong to Mordialloc and to Rosebud – an area with 14 police stations. In the fire season he is on call daily to fight fires across the Mornington Peninsula and across the state. He has been involved in flood and bushfire campaigns all over Victoria, including the Black Saturday fires for which he received the National Emergency Medal in 2013. Mr Etcell enjoys the camaraderie of his voluntary roles and the feeling of helping those less fortunate than himself. “I come across people from all walks of life under difficult circumstances. My primary objective is to help them and, especially, to take care of the welfare of the child,” he said. Dawn Tonge, who nominated her partner for the award, said he “always had a strong desire to give back to the community and finds these roles an immeasurable source of personal

satisfaction and enjoyment”. “He’s always available to help people with inquiries and signing documents. His friendly and inviting manner is a welcoming light to some people who are often confused and require reassurance over confusing documentation,” Ms Tonge said. “The role of JP requires him to be available at any time of the day for people to visit our home, or have Wayne go to them. He also makes himself available on occasional rosters at the police station as resident JP for a few hours in the evening.” Tyabb station captain Stephen Birkinshaw described Mt Etcell as “certainly a most valuable long-time member who’s very important to the brigade and many other organisations in the community”. Mr Birkenshaw said the $10,000 would go towards car parking at the station. Mt Etcell was nominated by his colleagues at the Tax office to receive the Australia Day Achievement Medallion which he received in 2009.
Frisky ‘fairies’ live lives of torrid affairs and deceit A SWEET and dainty backyard buddy on the Mornington Peninsula proves you just can't judge a book by its cover. As breeding season kicks off for cute little fairy-wrens, so begins their long list of illicit affairs. There are nine species of fairywrens in Australia currently partnering for the breeding season. The most common wren in Victoria is the superb fairy-wren. “Fairy-wrens are super cute with beautiful feathers and have delightful personalities, so it's no wonder the superb fairy-wren was voted Australia's favourite bird,” said Susanna Bradshaw, CEO of the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife. “But behind their fluffy appearance, there lies a tangled web of torrid affairs and deceit. They appear to have a picture-perfect family unit with mum and dad busily rearing their young each year. Some of their offspring even stick around to help feed the next brood of chicks. “Dad will go to great lengths to protect the family territory from other males, while also sharing childrearing duties. However, just before dawn, the illusion of family duty and marital fidelity is shattered. “Both mum and dad will often disappear to neighbouring territories, before the sun rises, for romantic for-

ays with other fairy-wrens. Mum may seek out a suitor who recently gave her a pretty flower as a gift, while dad may court other females. “This unashamed infidelity isn't just a one-off; it is so common that up to three-quarters of all fairy-wren broods can be sired by other males. It's not surprising they are the most unfaithful birds in the animal kingdom.
“Being unfaithful in the bird world is a lot more common than many people realise. It has benefits as laying lots of eggs fertilised by different males can increase the genetic health of the fairy-wren population.” Fairy-wren facts
Despite their size, they have a voracious appetite for insects and will eat large quantities of garden bugs.
Happy Birthday! To celebrate, we are offering FREE Hearing Test and 30 day Free Trial.
When the temperature drops, their cuteness factor increases exponentially as they huddle together on branches for warmth. Males may not look that tough but they're very brave. When most bird species hear a predator birds calling they will go quiet and try to work out whether they need to take cover. However the male fairy-wren decides this is a great time to loudly

sing his own song, probably because he knows more birds will be listening. Fairy-wrens are incredibly smart. They learn to recognise the alarm calls of many other species, and flee to safety. Scientists liken this being able to understanding multiple foreign languages. How to attract fairy-wrens to the garden • Keep pet cats inside or install an outdoor cat run. Cats kill and eat many fairy-wrens, even if they're well fed and not hungry. • Plant dense bushes in a corner of the garden – lemon bottlebrush, lemonscented darwinia, and hakeas. • Small, insect-attracting flowers are great for males who offer pretty petals to females. These plants also attract insects for them to eat. Try croweas, tea trees and dwarf flowering gums. • A birdbath near dense bushes will entice them as they like to be close to bushes so they can escape predators. • Tall trees surrounded by open spaces favour predatory and aggressive birds such as butcher-birds and noisy miners, which chase away fairy-wrens. The foundation's Backyard Buddies free program includes a monthly email with tips to make your backyard inviting and safe for native animals. Details: backyardbuddies.net.au Mike Hast

NEWS DESK Trailer thefts arrest A FRANKSTON South man has been arrested and charged over a spate of trailer thefts in the Mt Eliza and Mt Martha areas. Police will allege the man, 25, stole four trailers and $20,000 worth of tradies tools over several weeks. Two of the trailers have been recovered. Detective Sergeant Mel Nixon, of Somerville Police Complex, urges tradies to identify their tools “anyway they can” to make returns easier. Engraving an owner’s name and address or driver’s licence number on their tools is easy and practical, she said.
Camping blues HOLIDAYMAKERS erecting tents and parking caravans along the Rosebud, Rye and Sorrento foreshores in the lead up to the holidays are unwittingly attracting thieves. Detective Senior Sergeant Nick Vallas, of Somerville Police Complex, said the seasonal influx was a boon for opportunistic offenders. “The past couple of weeks we have had a few tents and caravans broken into,” he said. “They have stolen alcohol, food, small items and beach gear and, in some cases, made a huge mess. “The campers have added a few extra statistics for us, and when they come down they may find a few items missing.”
Carols at Rosebud CAROLS by Candlelight will be held at Rosebud Uniting Church, 6 Murray Anderson Rd, Rosebud, 7pm, Saturday 19 December. Singing will be led by the Larking About song group. The program will be followed by a cup of tea or coffee. All welcome.

Digging deep for Ethiopian water supply WE take for granted that water will flow from the tap when it’s turned on. It’s a welcome blessing in a first world country. But that luxury is unknown to impoverished villagers in Ethiopia, leading to a daily chore for women and girls who must fetch water for their families from the nearest well. The task can be dangerous and exhausting as the wells can be far from the safety of home. The time taken means girls are often forced to neglect their schooling and leading to them missing opportunities open only to those with an education.
A HOME IN TIME FOR
Christmas
Health is also a concern, with consumption of polluted water causing the deaths of one in five children. A swimathon by pupils of Woodleigh School’s Minimbah campus last year was one of many events held to raise money for wells in the African country. The idea was put to deputy principal Rod Davies by parent Ross Woodward, of Mt Eliza, who was inspired by the efforts of the Australian trust, WellWishers. Mr Woodward also knew champion swimmer Tammy Van Wisse, who was to become an enthusiastic participant in the
The Western Port Whisperer WHERE has the time gone? It seems like yesterday we watched history being made at the Melbourne Cup, and now the fat man in the red suit is ready to start delivering presents, and before long it’s going to be the new year. It’s as if time is currently running at twice the speed as usual. *** IN the mad rush to get to the shops in the lead up to Christmas, it is not uncommon for people to create their own unique parking spaces. We are lucky here in the Western Port region to have lots of parking, to the point where we can have car parks decorated as a taxi rank on Victoria Street in Hastings, nearly 5 years after they ceased to be a taxi rank (pictured). Despite the taxi rank being closed several years ago, the lines indicating this taxi rank have been repainted on a few occasions. The irony of this is residents often comment about the poor effort put into repainting road lines in numerous areas, however, someone still sees fit to paint lines indicating a taxi rank on Victoria Street, some five years after it has been shut. Lucky we have a lot of car parking!

fundraising. The pupils swam laps against Van Wisse, helping raise almost $8000. Mr Woodward said the money is being spent on building two wells in rural villages in Tigray Province. He says the wells will provide water for hundreds of people, helping ease the daily grind on women and girls and ensuring their schooling becomes a viable option. Mr Woodward said WellWishers has arranged to place signs on the wells bearing the names of pupils whose efforts made them possible. Steve Taylor
lack of consistency shown by the Besgrove Street Crew in Rosebud when it comes to making decisions about similar issues, in different townships. The latest example of this is the proposed name change of Rosebud West to Capel Sound. The Besgrove Street Crew has seen fit to enact a period of public consultation about the proposed name change, however, when it came to changing the name of the Wallaroo estate (formerly known as West Park), minimal public consultation took place with all residents of the local community. The Whisperer hopes that one day, all communities in this shire will be treated with the same dignified respect that can be found for other townships. *** THE Whisper is that the shire CEO has appointed a short term finance officer, avoiding tender and usual process. Did the job go to a former colleague at Spotless? Is The Whisper true that the job description suggests the new appointee has responsibility for the entire Mornington Peninsula economy? That will be welcome news to BlueScope, Esso etc. Not to mention The Whisperer, who would like to put in for an increase in his weekly allowance, currently controlled with an iron fist by Mrs Whisperer. *** FINALLY, to end the year, the Whisperer would like to thank everyone for the support he has received since making a return back in October. Mr and Mrs Whisperer, would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and a safe New Year. If you hear anything over the New Year, let The Whisperer know. westernportwhisperer@gmail.com
Author draws on life, memories Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au WAR veteran John Missen takes issue with the old adage ‘You can’t teach an old dog new tricks’: he’s nearly 90 and he’s just written his first novel. A Mornington resident for 20 years, Missen has written 450 pages of “historical romance” set in the Wimmera district of north-western Victoria in the 1950s. ‘A One Man Band’ was officially launched at Mornington Library, Saturday. “It’s the area of Victoria I remember best as a child,” he said. The book’s jacket says: “The hero, Eric Fergusson, travels from farm to farm with his mobile engineering workshop in an old Bedford truck, fixing machinery, tools and fences. He encounters sheep and wheat farmers, the goings-on of small town country life – and his future…” The author said the character is a “composite of the many people I knew. I appreciate people who can turn their hand to anything.” The choice of trade is insightful: Missen initially became an engineering draftsman before the war and was away fighting overseas from age 18-21. Returning home, he was encouraged to complete an engineering degree but opted, instead, for art at the then-Swinburne Technical College. It was an uphill battle: “I tried to make a living as an artist but didn’t do much good and needed money to raise a family. I joined the Lands Department as a draftsman,” he said.

He then joined Monash University where he stayed for the next 21 years, becoming a senior technician illustrating books and later chief technical officer, illustrating book covers. “I had no previous desire to write a book because I saw it as too difficult,” Missen says, having always used longhand. But, with the advent of computers, he was thrilled to discover how easy it was to write on screen, using the inbuilt Thesaurus.
“I sat down and played with one and thought, ‘This is too good to miss’”, he said. “I wrote the family history in 2001 and then joined the Federation of Australian Writers and began attending creative writing groups at Mornington Community Centre.” The title of the book came about through the hero’s way of life and his love interest: a woman he meets in a country town and who encourages his
love of music. At the altar on his wedding day the hero says: “This looks like the end of the one-man band.” His best man quips: “Val says she thinks it might mean we’ll soon have a chamber orchestra.” Missen is an active member of Peninsula Legacy, having been secretary for five years. He plays lawn bowl and attends writing and painting classes each week.
Register signs up client no. 1000 HASTINGS Police Senior Citizen’s Register signed its 1000th client at its recent Christmas barbecue. Cr David Garnock attended along with Hastings Senior Sergeant Alan Courtney. Fundraising officer Angie Muir said the joint Hastings police and community initiative had been running since 2000 with the aim of promoting confident and secure living among senior citizens. The service is free of charge, and registration is voluntary for the members who live in the Western Port area: from Baxter to Shoreham. Clients are provided with ID cards listing their names and identity numbers which are recorded at Hastings police station. Police and other emergency services can obtain the information should it be required in an emergency.
During the week, volunteers call regularly to check on a client’s welfare and, if there’s no answer after several attempts, Hastings police are alerted. The register mails a quarterly newsletter to clients, and organises two bus trips and two social functions each year. The home visits team is fundraising for a new car as the old one is 11 years old and becoming expensive to maintain. “We receive no funding from local, state or federal governments,” Ms Muir said. “Everything we do is funded by our activities and donations from members and local organisations.” To donate, call the register on 5979 2137 and leave a message for the president, Denise. Senior citizens wanting to be added to the registered can also leave a message with their name and phone number.

House arrests A BITTERN man and a Hastings woman, both 36, were arrested Tuesday 24 November and charged with burglary and theft of three houses in Bittern. The pair allegedly took power tools, glass ware and a pastry roller in the raids, police said. They have been bailed to appear at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on 10 January.

THE GARDEN PROFESSIONALS Somerville Garden supplies is offering generous monthly specials to help your garden in prime condition – as well as your bank account. Somerville Garden Supplies owner Mark Fulton is a Baxter resident who has been running the business for six years. “Although I took over the business in July six years ago, it is actually a fourth generation business running for at least 28 years,” he said. Mr Fulton’s grandfather started the family traditional garden business by setting up Fultons in Hawthorn in 1954. “My dad and his two brothers took that over about 20 years ago, and about 14 years ago they bought Oasis in Wantirna,” Mr Fulton said. Eight years ago Dad and I set up Bayside in Cheltenham, and when he retired, I came and bought this place.” The business is operated by Mr Fulton, two other full timers and two casual staff. “My dad tries to help out here and there when he can during his retirement years.” Mr Fulton says there has been a noticeable growth in the business. “Reality television shows, such as The Block, inspire people to perform their own garden makeovers and are a huge factor in the business growth. “The people who are into DIY are a large

What type of caravan is best for me? Ron Gunn of Utow Caravans says the best way to find out what type of caravan is best for you is to make a list of the features you need. “It is imperative that this list contains all the features that you require as must haves and then the nice to haves, before you go shopping,” says Ron. “Firstly you must decide is this the car I am going to keep, if yes, does the following apply to that vehicle: Front wheel drive or rear wheel drive, 4 x 4 or all-wheel drive, it does make a difference especially when it comes to weight leveling bars. What type of suspension is fitted to the vehicle and is it possible to upgrade that if necessary. Can a tow bar be fitted to the vehicle or does it have one, if so what is the maximum capacity for the towbar or the vehicle. (with the actual weight it can tow and also how much down pressure is allowable on the towball). The lower figure is the one that you have to live with, or buy a heavier duty towbar if available, and then what is the maximum payload of the vehicle. The caravan: What is it I need, then want.” Ron says it is imperative to consider what weight you will be towing. “Weight is important and also taking into
account if you are allowed to tow with the chosen vehicle, how high will fit under my carport, how long do I need it to be, single axle or dual axle. A single axle is easier to manoeuvre but a dual axle can be longer but not necessarily heavier and most people say travel better. Once this is decided then we look at exterior fittings: awning or annex (will I ever use the walls or will a privacy screen be enough).” Ron says other things to consider on your list are gas bottles, water or fuel containers on the front or back or not at all, solar panels, battery backup, and the possibility fo free camping. “You also need to look at interior furnishings like seating, material, colours, single beds or double/queen size bed, island or otherwise, cupboard space, and bench space. Remember you get what you pay for and if you are going to purchase a custom made caravan make sure your weights are within the vehicles capacity. You can keep adding bits and pieces but every item adds weight,” says Ron. Utow Caravans is at 25 Simcock Street, Somerville. Phone 5978 008. www.utowcaravans.com.au

Best food in Somerville ERAMOSA Coffee House, the little cafĂŠ on the corner in Somerville, boasts a delicious menu by chef Taz Serafimidis. Along with his lovely wife Kim, the couple have took over the cafĂŠ four months ago and have created what could be called the best menu going around. “With Taz being a chef for 16 years, we decided to buy our on business and bring his brand of food to the peninsula and the response has been amazing. We do all day breakfasts with Canadian breakfast, eggs benedict and fabulous hamburgers, also lots of healthy salad options with open salmon and my husbands famous poppy seed dressing to name a few,â€? said Kim. Being a fully qualified chef, it was easy for Taz to update the menu and he insists that everything is home made and fresh. They even sell the poppy seed dressing so you can enjoy it at home. “We don’t do premade sandwiches, everything is made to order, and our focaccias and toasted Turkish bread are delicious,â€? said Kim. “We also have a great kids menu with mini pancakes, googie egg on toast, toasted sandwich and nuggets that come with a kids size milkshake.â€? WHEN Made 2 Move Fitness and Dancewear opened in October this year it fulfilled a dream of owner, Kathy Kirk who had always wanted to own a dancewear store to reflect the special memory of her daughter Britney who passed away 13 years ago. “My girls have always been involved in dancing since my daughter Britney said years ago we should get Laura to be a ballerina. Britney was born with an undiagnosed neurological disorder which meant she could never walk and was always fascinated with her sister walking and dancing. We took Laura along to the dance studio in Frankston and she loved learning to dance. Although Britney passed away at age six and a half, her sisters, Laura and Taylor have continued dancing and we have kept it in the

178 Hendersons Road, HASTINGS Saturday 23rd January 2016 at 2.30pm Roberts & Green Real Estate, 64 High Street, Hastings, 5979 2489 Lisa Roberts 0488 910 368 and Wilma Green 0407 833 996
COMPLEMENTED by a natural bush setting, that is still only minutes from Hastings or Bittern, this superb country haven is set within a secluded garden oasis. The home has been crafted from 100 year old red brick and is surrounded by beautiful wisteria and other flowering blooms, with the 8000 square metre block also home to an orchard and two fenced paddocks. A circular tree-lined drive loops around in front of the home, with a further access track heading up to a detached double garage and two other outbuildings – one with power. The most striking aspect of the home from the exterior is the mass of outdoor entertaining space
where a wonderful verandah, embracing the home on two sides, merges with a vast alfresco deck and a huge rotunda that overlooks the gardens. From the East wing, there is a massive parents retreat – or perfect home office – that connects with the main bedroom featuring a walk-in robe and ensuite. Two more bedrooms both have built-in robes and share a lovely character-filled bathroom with spa bath, and a separate study could be a fourth bedroom if required. Other wet areas include the huge laundry with a brilliant amount of bench and cupboard space. The timber kitchen is framed with hand-crafted tiles acting as splashbacks and
appliances include a dishwasher and wall oven. There is a handy amount of bench and cupboard space also and the wonderful thick benchtops bear the marks of many a fabulous meal. There is an adjoining dining area, and the lovely family room has a charming open fire place set into a brick feature wall. As with most rooms, the formal lounge has a distinct colonial influence with sash windows and dramatic leadlight and timber finishes. Blessed with a wonderful rustic touch, this idyllic property is your opportunity to obtain a peaceful country lifestyle on the peninsula.

Hastings & District Community bank branch
IN HASTINGS FOR THE LONG HAUL! A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Seven years ago the local community got behind the concept of a community bank. And so the Bendigo bank (Hastings Community Bank branch) was started. The branch offers a complete and very competitive banking service including business banking facilities, housing loans, deposits, etc. as well as insurance and financial planning services But more than that, in the past seven years the bank has given back over $300,000 to the local community. That’s $300,000 to make our community stronger. That’s because we are here for the long term. We believe in the future of Hastings and the power of a community that believes in itself.
All ability winners MOST of us have played sport at some stage and is something we take for granted. But how would you feel if playing sport wasn’t so simple, that you didn’t have the choices available and just getting to the venue required considerable effort? The All Abilities Basket ball club was formed in 2005 and is the only basketball facility of it’s kind on the Western Port side of the peninsula. Players travel long distances to participate and are of various ages and abilities. Some are at school, some work. But for all, the Thursday afternoon game is a highlight of their week and many players are long-term members of the group. Coaches and helpers are all volunteers. Players develop life skills including hand eye
coordination; social interaction and self-discipline which also help them to better participate in society generally. But for the players the simple joy of participating is the real benefit and provides an opportunity for inclusion, which too often is not available to them. Players also participate in statewide Basketball tournaments and one player has participated in the Victoria All abilities team. The All Abilities Basketball club meets every Thursday afternoon at the Western Port Basketball stadium, Somerville, and the Hastings Community Bank (Bendigo Bank branch) has committed to providing assistance to the club to purchase uniforms. New members are always welcome. For enquiries, phone 5977 7533.

LETTERS Wasted rates I am astounded that Mornington Peninsula Shire is wasting ratepayers’ money in sending our mayor [Graham Pittock] and another councillor [Hugh Fraser] to Paris for the International Conference on Climate Change. I think it is highly appropriate that our federal Minister for the Environment, [Flinders MP] Greg Hunt attend and deliver Australia’s commitment to reduction targets, but I cannot see any reason why councillors need to attend (“Mayor backs climate plan at Paris talks”, The News 8/12/15). Local government councillors do not need to attend to learn what other countries are doing to reduce climate change, that information will be well publicised as Australia’s targets will be compared to other countries. Local governments are not in a position to take any action to achieve to our national targets anyway, they don’t run coal fired power stations, wind turbines or solar power stations. Yes, climate change is important and Australia does need to take action to reduce carbon emissions, but none of these actions are within the influence of local government. It is no wonder that our rates increase more than CPI when money is spent on such wasteful junkets. I call on the Mornington Peninsula council to ban all such spending and stay focused on the job we ratepayers pay them to do and not get distracted by issues beyond local government authority. Roger Skipsey, Mornington
Hunt can report Why are Mornington Peninsula Shire ratepayers being asked to foot the $12,000 bill to have councillors [the mayor Graham] Pittock and [Hugh] Fraser attend the climate change talks in Paris? What qualifications do they have to attend and what do they hope to learn or achieve? How will we even know whether they attended any of the events – will they be held accountable? Even if they were to report on their trip, they could so easily get all of the necessary information from the daily papers or from Googling “climate talks outcomes”. Our very own federal MP, [Environment Minister] Greg Hunt, is in attendance. More importantly he will be sitting at the tables where the real talks are held. I am sure council could learn more from a meeting with the minister when he returns from the talks than they will from Crs Fraser and Pittock. Oh, and the cost of such a meeting? A car trip to his local electorate office at Hastings. No passports needed. This smacks of a right royal “jolly”. Irene Wyld, Cape Schanck
Population problem Your article contains so much gobbledegook that I had to read it several times to discover what our mayor [Graham Pittock] and councillor [Hugh Fraser] had achieved in their holiday trip to Paris, costing ratepayers $12,000 or $8000 (or something). Apparently our councillors supported the stand of our federal Environment Minister [Greg Hunt]. Phew! Thank heavens for that. Also, it seems that our mayor mingled with world leaders and spoke with the international
press in attendance. Gee whiz. I sure am impressed. Climate change problems are, of course, the domain of federal and state governments. Incompetent local councils should keep out of it and take advice from learned and qualified experts. Being very interested in the causes of climate change, be it cosmic or power stations, I often wonder what is the formula used to hold this huge planet's temperature rise to 1.7 or 2.0 degrees? Have the experts factored in the plague population of seven billion people, which will be 15 billion in no time, then soon 30 billion? If we had one child a family, or even two, for 100 years, and reduced the plague to a sustainable two or three billion, perhaps there would be no problem and we could keep our power stations. No one seems to want to address this part of the equation, the most important part. Each human breathes out carbon dioxide continually and eats tonnes of vegetables and animals over a lifetime. Compounding population rise is our real roblem. Solve it and pollution and carbon problems will be no more. Understand that we cannot forever continue increasing our population (consumers). It will have to stop sooner or later, or you'll get very, very sick and hungry. Brian A Mitchelson, Mornington Editor: The description of the National Climate Resilience and Adaptation Strategy included in the article was supplied to the shire by Mr Hunt’s office.
Naked decision
Remember the story “The emperor’s new clothes” where an emperor was persuaded by two slick salesmen to be measured for a new suit, which would be invisible to him, but seen by his constituents? When finished, the emperor paraded in what he thought were his exotic new clothes; but the public saw him naked. A stupid emperor had fallen prey to flattery and pride. These salesmen (climate septics) have returned masquerading as coal buyers and many politicians have fallen for their silver tongues. Even though hundreds of thousands of Australians marched in the street to demonstrate that the naked politicians were indeed unable to see how foolish they were to fall for the prime minister’s statement that if we do not sell the coal someone else will. Like the original story when it was an innocent child who asked why the emperor was naked, school children today could tell the politicians, should they listen, that coal (carbon) should stay in the ground. Putting extra CO2 into the atmosphere will lead to higher temperatures which, for Australia, will be disastrous for coral reefs, crop and food growing to say nothing of the melting ice in the Antarctic. Why is it that our prime minister and environment minister have a desire to sell as much black coal as possible and destroy our feeble RET (renewable energy target). Can they not see they are, in the eyes of the thinking world, totally naked. Peter Strickland, Balnarring
Dredging for port I have been in correspondence (sadly one way) with Environment Minister and Flinders MP
Greg Hunt, on the subject of the Liberal Party’s ongoing support for a gigantic container port at Hastings. Since Mr Hunt declines to directly answer me, I’m afraid it’s back to the media to try to get answers. This letter is therefore based on interview given by Mr Hunt and sourced from his own website. When a journalist asked “… will the development of a Hastings port require any dredging in Western Port?” Hunt: “My understanding is that it would be, if necessary at all, a fraction, a scintilla, a micro-component of that which will occur if the Port of Melbourne is the only container port in Victoria.” He is clearly way out of touch on this issue as the most common and well-researched dredging figure is 24 million cubic metres. The News has quoted coastal erosion expert, Associate Professor David Kennedy as saying “The proposed development is almost certain to have major environmental impacts on the marine and coastal environment of Western Port” and “… the potential impacts could be more widespread” due to “a general lack of knowledge of sediment transport pathways within the bay”. Given Western Port’s frightening “build Hastings port” future as outlined by Associate Professor Kennedy, will Mr Hunt now reassure Flinders electors in writing that he will assess any future Hastings port proposal under his own oft repeated powers under federal law and not (as per the agreement he signed with Matthew Guy as state planning minister last year), devolve these powers down to state level. This is a very large fox in the Hastings port henhouse. Kevin Chambers, The Gurdies
that the Earth revolved around the Sun as did the other planets. It was peer reviewed favourably by Archimedes I believe. I take a keen interest in the global warming/ climate change debate and like to read intelligent, expert opinion on both sides of the debate, but Henry's letter started off factually wrong and went downhill from there. Robert Murray, Dromana
Political spin
There is no need to “trim “ a committee, according to Consumer Affairs (“Committee numbers trimmed”, The News 8/12/15). The secretary of the Somers Residents’ Association’s gave only 10 days notice, the absolute minimum, before the annual general meeting. Why was this rushed? Surely the association should be seen to be open and transparent and accessible? Using their interpretation of the regulations is not what should define a community association. The SRA makes a choice not to supply adequate information or notice to our community where 50 per cent and more of our members do not live in Somers. It is already harder than normal to stay connected. Why was the AGM held early on a Friday night? Why not a Saturday morning like other groups? The overwhelming votes cast were proxy votes, garnered, I believe, well before notice of the AGM was given. This made it virtually impossible for anyone else to be on equal terms without access to membership lists. Excellent vice-presidential candidates were defeated by proxy votes. Did the solicitation of proxies give the executive an unfair advantage, given the right to act as they chose? The SRA should be put on notice that it needs fairer, more transparent processes. When it sits on the Red Hill Ward Consultancy Group and has links to Mornington Peninsula Shire it is in a position of influence at local government level and needs to be far more accountable. There is a new committee. If all of those people who live, work, rent or holiday in Somers are to be given a fair go many things need to change. Sue King, Somers
Let’s cut through the political spin announced by [Environment Minister and Flinders MP] Greg Hunt at Paris COP21 and look at what is really happening. Australia has just been ranked the worst among OECD countries and the third worst in the world on tackling climate action. Why? Our emissions of CO2 per capita are one of the highest in the world. The current policy framework is inadequate to reach its minimum 2020 target of five per cent below 2000 levels. Our RETs (renewable energy targets) have been significantly cut back. We have just approved one of the largest coal mines in the world to further increase emissions. Direct Action is a weak policy which does not cover major emitters. Our emissions are increasing and we will use our Kyoto credits to hide future emission increases. Our representation at Paris by Mr Hunt has sadly been a rather large embarrassment. We hope the rest of the world can play its part in Paris. Kelvin Stingel, Mornington Peninsula Greens
Revolutionary thought Henry Broadbent ("Incorrect Physics", Letters 8/12/15) states that "500 years ago everybody thought that the Sun orbited the Earth". All my Greek friends were upset about that and urged me to put him straight. More than 2200 years ago an ancient Greek mathematician and astronomer, Aristarchus, of Samos, theorised
Wasted words I think John Cain, (“Marginal the way to go”, Letters 8/12/15) needs a gentle reminder about how government actually works in Australia. It is not the blowhards and single issue representatives that form government, but the party that gets the majority of public support. A quick glance back at local history is all that is needed to prove this point. People marching up and down Main St, Mornington, disrupting all and sundry to save the Mornington train. Train’s gone. Same motley crew doing the same a few years later to save the railway station. Station’s gone. Friends of Tassels Creek vowing to stop the Safety Beach [Martha Cove] marina. Marina’s built. Blairgowrie marina. Marina built. Blue Wedges was hell bent on stopping channel dredging. Channel dredged. Authurs Seat chairlift. Same story. So Mr Cain, if you think the MP for Flinders [Greg Hunt] is going to change government policy just because you have written him a letter, well good luck with that. Michael G Free, Mt Martha

All the prominent residents of the district are invited to be present and the ladies have conceived the idea of holding a luncheon, at the modest charge of 1s., to help the funds of the institute and to assist in paying off the debt. The ladies of the district are cordially invited to bring refreshments and the luncheon will be under the management of the Red Cross Committee. In the evening a Children’s Concert and Cantata under the capable management of Mrs Geo. Reed, will be given. *** CHILD Life. The Nation’s Greatest Asset. Owing to the War it is more than ever necessary that the Child Life of the nation should be safeguarded, for children are the Nation’s greatest asset. Not Britain only, but the Em-
pire has paid her heavy toll in lives. From Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Britain’s loyal sons have come: many never to return. Whom have we to take their place ? Only the children. The Empire rests today on childhood’s shoulders, and it is our duty to fit those shoulders for their task. Thousands of children die in this land of ours who could be saved; thousands of children grow up stunted, warped diseased, who with proper care would grow up healthy and useful. It behoves us to see that not a single child be lost who can be saved. The safety of the Empire in the years to come depends on the children. The Charter of Dr Barnardo’s Homes is— No destitute child ever refused admission. 1,577 children were rescued last year. In one fortnight recently 92 orphan and destitute boys and girls were added to this big family, which average 7,480 children. 1,560 Barnardo Boys are serving in the forces, and the list is growing daily. Will you assist this National Charity to hold out the hand of help to every forlorn little one who needs their aid? *** THE application for the renewal of a wine licence at Somerville was heard at Mornington Licensing Court on Friday. Mr Cook appeared on behalf of the applicant, and raised certain preliminary objections which the Court would not consider till the adjourned sitting of the Court. Inspector Jones appeared on behalf of po-
lice, who opposed the renewal, and Mr Rostron appeared on behalf of certain Somerville residents who also opposed the licence being renewed. The hearing was adjourned till 23rd inst. *** THE friends of Mr W. Robertson, of Langwarrin, will regret to hear of the loss he has sustained in the death of his brother and his wife, which sad event took place within a fortnight of each other. The deceased, Mr Jas Robertson, met with an accident some four months ago, while stepping out of his buggy his foot slipped, on the kerbing and he fell against a verandah post with his shoulder which brought on blood poisoning and resulted in the arm having to be amputated at the shoulder blade. He never recovered from the effect of the accident but lingered till the 26th November when he passed away at the age of 53 years. The close attention given to the deceased by his wife during his illness, brought on dropsy, from which complaint Mrs Robertson succumbed on 11th December and was buried exactly a fortnight after her husband. For the last five years Mr Robertson kept the Werribee Cup Hotel Ascot Vale. Previous to which he had the Globe Hotel in Swanston St and Douglas Hotel, Bourke St, on the site where the theatre now stands. He was the son of Mr Robert Robertson, the head of one of the oldest established firms of plumbers in Melbourne. Two sons, aged 22 and 18
years, are left to mourn the loss of their parents. *** HARVESTING operations are now in full swing. In almost every instance very heavy crops have resulted. Fruit crops also promise to be abundant. *** SNAKES have been unusually prevalent this year. Donald Clarke, farm employee of Mulready Bros, was bitten on Monday night on the finger as he took a sheaf of hay off the stook. Mr L. Berryman rendered 1st aid, and took the man to Dr Somers. He is progressing satisfactorily. *** THE Red Cross League and Progress Association combined are proposing to entertain a contingent of wounded soldiers on the beach on a date to be fixed. *** AN appeal to the Editor. The Melbourne Boys Home has been reopened under the supervision of the Matron Mrs W. Minton who will welcome visitors to see through the Home on any afternoon. The Matron would be thankful for any donations of clothing goods or toys to brighten the Xmas tides for these less unfortunate little ones. We are thankful to your readers for past kindness to the boys of the Home and trust that this appeal will merit sympathy.—Yours etc., M. Minton, Hon Sec. PENINSULA HAPPENINGS
The friendly market – every Sunday EVERY Sunday - rain hail or shine – at 8am until 1pm, Bittern Sunday Market opens with more than 80 stalls selling new and used goods, craft, plants and flowers, fruit and vegetables, foods and much more. The market located on the Bittern Station rail reserve, offers a bustling country feel on the ‘wild side’ of the beautiful Mornington Peninsula. It is also a friendly meeting place for locals and visitors, offering places to sit for coffee, cake and chat. Operated by a voluntary committee of stallholders, the Bittern Sunday Market has been operating for 30 years and has raised in excess of $500,000 for community organisations. The committee allocates money from stall fees to local schools, clubs and community groups. Each year cheques and certificates go to 18 students nominated by teachers at local schools. The market regularly supports local CFAs and Riding for the Disabled for example. The committee recently came to the rescue of local Men’s Sheds faced with paying new fees. Application for funding forms are available from Committee Members or the Market
Manager at the Market every Sunday. Contact number is 0409 417 463. The range of stalls is diverse with regular and casual stallholders creating an interesting mix for browsing each week. Stalls include new and second hand goods, native plants, seedlings, herbs, flowers, clothing, jewellery and collectibles such as CDs, vinyl records, glassware and ceramics. The site has 72 marked stalls with about 10 available to casual stallholders weekly. Cost is $20 per site or $30 for the limited number of larger sites. There is plenty of parking on the railway reserve or across the road behind the Bittern Hall. The roadway on the railway side is a Clearway, anyone parking there will be booked. A new pedestrian crossing has made it safer for visitors transiting from the market to Bittern Fields shopping centre. Many cyclists take advantage of the bike path running from Tyabb to Somers to stop off at the market for morning tea and a wander. The market is also accessible for mobility scooters. Dogs (on leads) and children are welcome.

THE MEANING OF EXISTENCE... AND OTHER SHORT STORIES
The sheer, undeniable brilliance of you By Stuart McCullough GENIUS. It’s a word we use all too sparingly. Mozart was a genius, Little Richard too. Picasso was a genius even though he was a pretty awkward human being. Catch 22 is a work of genius although people less commonly bestow that honour on its author, Joseph Heller. It’s a mercurial kind of business. Generally speaking, ‘genius’ is a label we reserve for certain fields of endeavour such as literature, music, art and the like. But there’s no good reason for being so stingy. Instead, I think there’s a case for celebrating brilliance where you find it. Is it possible to be a bona fide genius when it comes to fish and chips? I firmly believe it is. Mozart and Picasso would probably tell you otherwise, but neither of them knew the true transcendental pleasure that comes from flake, minimum chips and a splash of vinegar. It’s a scientific fact that the greatest fish and chips in the Universe can always be found at the fish and chip shop nearest your house, but in my case, it’s actually true. The front window says it all: Bill is back. His name is on the window because Bill’s work with hot oil and deep fried food can fairly be described as nothing short of ground breaking. Ideally, the work of Bill would receive broader recognition. We have all kinds of awards for excellence; for journalists, writers and footballers alike. But we need to think a little bigger and reward accomplishment in other fields too. ‘Best flake: grilled’ ought to be a trophy. ‘The lifetime achievement award for minimum chips’ is an honour that ought to be bestowed with an oversized cheque. In a perfect world, there would be a televised Brownlow-style vote count on a round by round basis for ‘Best Dim Sims – steamed or fried’. Each day, I stop at the same coffee shop on my way to work. Once upon a time, people who made coffee were referred to simply as ‘coffeemakers’. But at some point, that all changed and the term ‘barista’ came into vogue. I’m not sure what the qualifications are to be a barista, other than a man-bun, a beard and having recently returned from a year’s backpacking through South America. But it’s not like that at my coffee shop. She has neither a man-bun nor a beard, but she makes a remarkable flat white. If that does not sound like the kind of skill that ought to attract a term like ‘genius’, think for a moment about every lousy cup of coffee you ever tipped over your lips in sufferance and then tell me that the ability to create a truly great skinny latte doesn’t deserve a plaque or, possibly, a ticker tape parade.

Western Port News 15 December 2015
That you are a genius in one area doesn’t mean you’re brilliant at everything, though. There’s a bakery down the street and, frankly, most of the products are terrible. I once bought a piece of hedgehog that was so rock-solid that it could have been used to pave a landing strip for large aircraft. There are times, late at night, when I truly wonder whether or not the remnants of that hedgehog are yet to be fully dissolved by my digestive system; such was its indestructible nature. While creating a cake that cannot be destroyed by conventional weapons may well be genius of a sort, that’s not where their true talent lies. The very same bakery that makes inedible hedgehog and vanilla slices that look as though they’ve just had a rough night out on the tiles also make the greatest lamingtons known to humanity. This is not something I say lightly. Lamingtons were my grandmother’s signature dish. She perfected the art of the lamington after first learning to cook them as part of Australia’s test for new migrants. Back then, if you could whip up either a pavlova or lamington, you were immediately granted citizenship. I’m not sure where our local baker managed to stumble across the recipe for his lamingtons, but they are supernaturally fluffy and delicious. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that he has practically re-invented the art form. As for me, I’m not a genius at fish and chips. Nor am I a genius at making a cup of coffee or lamingtons, notwithstanding that I’ve been known to consume both from time to time. My skills, it seems, lie elsewhere. If I am a genius at anything, it’s probably at getting up early. That may not sound like much of a talent, but it’s certainly come in handy over the past few weeks in managing the dog. But that’s not all. Two weeks ago, I performed possibly the greatest piece of reverse parking of all time. The space was tight and I guided the vehicle to within kissing distance of the gutter in a single attempt. Some might call that luck. But you and I know better. Given a choice, we’d all love to paint great paintings, write brilliant books and compose music that endures through the ages. Most of us won’t, though. But it doesn’t mean that our contributions, whether large or small, don’t all help to keep this big old world spinning on its axis in their own particular way. So let me be the first to say it: you’re a genius. I’m not sure in which field, but I’m certain that you’re great at something that makes a difference. And so on behalf of me and everyone else, let me simply say to you: thanks. stuart@stuartmccullough.com

SEXY, SIZZLING AND SAUCY – SPIEGELTENT IS BACK By Melissa Walsh The Spiegeltent is back with a bang, rolling into Sorrento all the way from Belgium and knocking audiences out with its raunchy night of fun with the show, Limbo. Local media and special guests attended the fabulous opening night last Thursday, greeted with bubbles on arrival and a magical journey back in time to the sexy days of vaudeville and cabaret.
and producing shows, is delighted about the reaction to the new show, which took lucky members of the audience to another world, where acrobats, musicians and dancers galore rocked the Spiegeltent stage.
After a sellout season last summer, the dream of restaurateur and theatrical producer, James McPherson, continues with the second annual Spiegeltent production, Limbo.
“Spiegeltent is also a tribute to George Coppin, the Father of Sorrento, himself a comedian, entrepreneur and politician,” says James, who continues to dedicate the fabulous experience to the late great Mr Coppin whose love of Sorrento, hard work and dedication made it the holiday destination it is today.

James first fell in love with the Spiegeltent when he saw it in Melbourne many years ago.

ON THE BEACH A Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery exhibition - 11 December 2015 – 28 February 2016 On the Beach considers the place of the beach within Australian life by bringing together paintings and photographs by some of Australia’s acclaimed Modernists with works by contemporary artists. The exhibition considers the ways in which people relate to the beach, its place in understandings of national identity and its history as a contested site. On the Beach features works by Arthur Boyd, Gordon Bennett, Daniel Boyd, Max Dupain, Charles Meere, Tracey Moffatt, David Moore, Sidney Nolan, Polixeni Papapetrou, John Perceval, Scott Redford, Jeffrey Smart, Albert Tucker, Guan Wei and Anne Zahalka. The exhibition also features a series of photographs by George Caddy showing the lost art of beachobatics. From 1936 to 1941 a group of acrobatic men and women from a gymnastic club would gather on Bondi Beach wearing the most daring costumes of the day, and form their sun-tanned bodies into complex human pyramids. On Thursday 18 February Paul Caddy will talk about how he discovered a box of his father’s photographs that have become legendary images. During summer, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery has a great line-up of school holidays activities for children of all ages. Drop in any time during the exhibition to contribute to our fabulous On the beach community creation. MPRG is also running January school holiday workshops for 8–16 year olds and is hosting the National Gallery
of Victoria kids on tour program. Children can enjoy activities for the Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei and Hermannsburg Potters exhibitions, 16–26 January. scoreboard
Baxter start well in must-win game PROVINCIAL By IT Gully BAXTER has placed itself in a strong position to win its final match of 2015 against Somerville. Currently in eighth place on the MPCA Provincial ladder, a loss here would really put them behind the eight ball in 2016, leaving them at least two games out. With the competition so tight, picking up 24 points is a tall order. Nonetheless, the home side is most certainly in this contest after winning the toss and electing to bat. A 154-run partnership between Chris Brittain (79) and Dale Irving (76) really set Baxter up to post a solid
total. With Ben Brittain hitting 41 and keeper Daniel Lanati contributing 21, Baxter was able to post a total of 9/281. Considering the form that Chamara Sattambi and Irving are in with the ball, that total looks defendable. Matty Roach was the best of the Somerville bowlers, getting through 21 overs and finishing with a return of 5/48. Langwarrin has set Long Island a tricky total, but considering the depth of batting talent at the Islanders’ disposal, they should chalk up another win. The Kangaroos had a number of players who started well, but none were able to maintain. Matt Prosser opened with a top score of 32, Simon McEvoy got 29 and Mal Coutts fin-
ished unbeaten on 29. The Islanders’ bowlers made it difficult to score, restricting the home side to 8/178 in its 80 overs. Chris Hocking bowled 27 overs and finished with 3/47, while Mike Reynolds claimed 2/16 from 10 overs. Pines were looking for an outright win to keep its season alive against Rye, but it almost backfired. The Piners have already picked up the win after bowling Rye out for 80 in 33 overs and then posting a score of 7/98 in the next 34 overs. At one stage, Pines were in all sorts of trouble at 2/1, 4/13 and 6/19. Jarred Coad (37) and Pat Jackson (42 not out) put on a partnership of 79 to steer the home side to
a first-innings win. Tom Baron was superb for his side, collecting 4/48, while Andrew Dunn claimed 2/24. Crib Point has left Sorrento with plenty of work to do, scoring 7/317 on Saturday at Crib Point Recreation Reserve. Luke Herrington was at his vintage best with 110, while Ricky Thompson hit an unbeaten 40 in honour of his Dad, who passed last week. Jacob Cook also hit 40, batting ninth. Chris King bowled 25 overs for the Sorras with a return of 4/101, while Hayden Bell picked up 3/52 in his first game back. Sorrento faced the last over of the day and will resume this coming Saturday on 0/2 with Corey Harris and Nick Jewell at the crease.
Mt Eliza has set Moorooduc a valiant 234 for victory after positing 9/233 on Saturday at Moorooduc Reserve. Jordan Fuhrmann was superb in his third match, top-scoring with an unbeaten 86 despite deserving a ton. Cameron Bailey was the pick of the Ducs’ bowlers with 4/44 off 23 overs. Mornington has set Peninsula Old Boys a winning total of 231 runs at Peninsula School. The top four Old Boys were all over the wickets with the ball. Zac Fillipone opened to claim 2/46, with Adam Gailitis snaring 2/42, Adam Jones 3/35 and Jon Forrest 2/59.
Hillmen domination continues DISTRICT
By IT Gully THE Red Hill steam train shows no signs of slowing down after scoring 9/301 against Mt Martha on Saturday at the Red Hill Showgrounds. The Hillmen rely on no individual to win games of cricket, with all hands on deck whether batting, bowling or out in the field. After scoring more than 300 runs on Saturday, you’d be forgiven for assuming the likes of Simon Dart and Matt Merifield were amongst the runs. Either that or the Shaws, at the top of the order, dominated. But you should never assume anything with the Hillmen. While Riley Shaw did score 42, the real action came from Brent Martin, who scored 74 to back up his recent 46-run effort, while Glenn Collett hit 54 and Andrew Mock 40. The latter are number eight and nine batsmen, yet, they scored almost 100 runs between them. Michael Clavin was the pick of the Mt Martha bowlers, with 4/51 from 17 overs, but Jordan Pomeroy was also back to his best with 3/60. Carrum is still roughly 50 runs short of making a game of it against Baden Powell. While at the end of the day runs on the board is what it’s all about, the Braves wouldn’t be concerned at all chasing 225 for victory. John Mitchell opened with 77 for the Lions on Saturday to be the top scorer, while Lachy Dobson was again called in to get some runs, scoring 40 in spite of batting eighth. Main Ridge has some work to do with the bat this week, going up against Pearcedale at Tractor Park. The Panthers made 7/261
PAGE 54
on Saturday after being sent in to bat by the Ridge. Brad Trotter opened with 80 while skipper Kaine Smith hit 71 and Luke Jennings contributed 46 on debut. Adam Bryant was a stand-out bowler for Main Ridge, writing up 4/50. At 5/35 against Boneo, Flinders were in a real spot of bother until evergreen Shane Beggs, one of the MPCA’s finest, strode out to the crease. With great support from Blake Hogan-Keogh (36) and Mitch Stansborough (28), Beggs was free to blast away, amassing an unbeaten 101 to help his side to 9/228. Cameron Williams snared 4/53 for the Pandas while Daniel Wilson claimed 4/39. Seaford missed out on an easy opportunity to post a big score in their derby match. Thanks to a middle-order collapse, the Seaford Tigers remain competitive. Seaford were cruising with 0/80 early on before Paul Hartle fell for 45 and Ryan McQueen for 32. That score line quickly became 5/111 – Scott Manders scored 28 and the tail wagged to help Seaford to 8/212.Ash Mills claimed 3/21 from 21 overs for the Tigers while Corey Hand and David James picked up two wickets apiece. A total of 13 wickets fell on day one of the match between Delacombe Park and Heatherhill. The Hills rolled the home side for 150. Steve Anderson top scored for the Parkers with 50 while Daniel Ballard scored 23 against his old crew. Jason Hinde, Brett Maxwell and Jordan Creely each snared three wickets for the Hills. Heatherhill is now struggling at 3/22, while Dean Blight for Delacombe Park has 2/9 from five overs.

North and South combine
By Toe Punt THE Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League will be fielding only one team in the Vic Championships next season, shunning the traditional arrangement of both Nepean and Peninsula teams. AFL South East’s hand has been forced as AFL Victoria changed its Community Championships format to include both metropolitan and country leagues. In light of this decision, the AFL South
East Commission decided that it would be in the best interest of the MPNFL to return to one representative side, ensuring they can compete strongly against the metropolitan leagues that have three or more divisions of players to select from. The MPNFL will play the Northern Football League in 2016, which has three divisions and 26 teams to choose players from. In order to better compete, the Nepean and Peninsula teams will be amalgamated. No
coaches have been announced at this stage, although it’s rumoured John Hynes has been given the nod ahead of Langwarrin and Dromana premiership coach Gavin Artico. The MPNFL will play on Saturday, May 21 to have a shot at the title of number one ranking against either the Eastern Football League or Geelong Football Netball League. Venue details will be released early in 2016.
By IT Gully HASTINGS will be digging deep for the win when it begins day two against Tyabb this Saturday. As the visitors, the Yabbies didn’t fare so well outside the familiar surroundings of the pond. The visitors lasted just 34.3 overs in their first innings and were bowled out for 55. Michael Edwards top scored with 14. 16-year-old Ryan McNamara was sensational for the Blues in only his third First XI game. McNamara bowled seven overs and finished with the impressive figures of 5/21. Luke Hewitt snared 2/2 and Mitchell Floyd 2/11 from 12 overs. The Blues didn’t do much better with the bat, managing 92 in pursuit of quick runs, although Al Kristensen’s 39 did help. The Yabbies are 3/21 in their second innings, still 16 runs behind. Floyd picked up another couple of wickets. Mark Snelling smashed a brutal 180 runs for Carrum Downs in their match against
Yabbies on right track – coach
Despite a couple of ‘good players’ leaving Tyabb during the pre-season, new coach Mark Paganoni couldn’t be happier with the positive and united attitude of his players as they approach training. The rejuvenation at the Yabbies has come on the back of some home grown talent returning, as well as a very strong coaching panel. Paganoni, a former Frankston Dolphins Development Coach, has assistants that include former Hawthorn premiership player and ‘All Australian’ Bob Keddie, who also coached West Adelaide and won a premiership coaching Sandringham among many other VFL and AFL honours. Jack Holt had finals success coaching Cora Lynn, as well as coach Seaford and Mornington. Former Red Hill coach Andrew Brady, a dual best and fairest winner at both the Rye and Mornington clubs has returned and former AFL umpire and arguably the best umpire to grace an oval on the Peninsula, Peter Marshall, is head of fitness.

Frankston YCW. Snelling hit 22 fours and five sixes in his innings, while Nathan Phillips scored 58 and Ryan Lynch 43. The Stonecats will be chasing 342 for victory this week after the Cougars finished on 6/341. Rosebud has set Tootgarook 240 for victory after scoring 239 on Saturday at Olympic Park. Billy Quigley hit a high score for the Buds with 42 and Brad Glenn hit 34. Zac Stevenson was the pick of the Frogs’ bowlers with 4/85. Dromana will be looking for an outright victory against Ballam Park. The Knights were obliterated after just 95 runs, with Aaron Kaddatz taking 3/32. The Hoppers will resume at 6/152 after Darren Kerr made 41 and Jack Fowler 25. The match between Balnarring and Skye will go right down to the wire. The Saints batted first on Saturday and made 179. Mitch Kleinig top scored with an unbeaten 6, while Pat Clinch claimed 5/37 for Skye. The home side is currently 2/39 in reply.
Six-time Yabbies Best and Fairest Winner and club legend, Matt Hose is again coaching the club’s Reserve grade side. The Yabbies have already had more than 60 senior players at training and promise to be a far more competitive outfit in 2016. They have been strengthened by the return of club Best and Fairest winners Ethan Rahilly and Rowan McGrath and a host of other new faces determined to play senior footy in the Tyabb colours. Rowan’s twin brother, Tim has also returned to the club and prior to a stint at Kooweerup was selected in the Nepean League Team of the Year. Strongly built defender, Jeremy Daniel from Pines has also arrived at the ‘pond’ and will add some real hardness to the Yabbies back six. “As a coaching group we have been very impressed in the way the guys have taken to the work‌.heads down and into it each night,â€? Paganoni said . “Any player who feels that they are not getting a shot where they are, we will certainly give them every opportunity at our club,â€? he said.
