This train ride’s a scream THE Halloween train huffed and puffed its way between Mornington and Moorooduc sidings on Sunday with hundreds of scary children dressed in their most frightening costumes. Fittingly, they were riding on a steam locomotive that had itself come back from the dead. The K163 – built in 1942 and rescued for the track after 18 years sitting on a plinth at Frankston’s Jubilee Park – has been a feature of the Moorooduc track for the past 18 years. In the fourth Halloween day festivities on Sunday it carried 380 children on four trips. Organiser Arthur Stone, of the Mornington Railway Preservation Society, set the scene with a bloodied apron and a cleaver stuck in his hat. “It was an excellent day,” he said. “We had 230 children on the first loco trip, 70 on the second and 40 each on the other rides.” And the hat with the meat cleaver in his head? “I had to take it off every now and then when little boys asked if it hurt,” he quipped. Shire shake-up sees 8 new faces Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au EIGHT new councillors have been elected to the 11-member Mornington Peninsula Shire Council. Three of four councillors seeking re-election regained their seats: Bev Colomb in Briars ward, Antonella Celi in Seawinds and Hugh Fraser, Nepean. Former councillor David Garnock (Cerberus) was defeated in the 22 October poll which saw 50 candidates contesting 11 seats over six wards. Joining Crs Colomb, Celi and Fraser on the council will be David Gill (Red Hill); Kate Roper (Cerberus); Julie

Edge (Watson); Rosie Clark and Sam Hearn (Briars); Bryan Payne (Nepean); and Simon Brooks and Frank Martin (Seawinds). Frank Martin is a former shire councillor and David Gill was a councillor with the Shire of Mornington. The results were finalised on Sunday night and will be officially declared on Wednesday. It is the biggest shake-up of council members since the formation of the shire in December 1994, when the shire was run by state governmentappointed commissioners. The new councillors will have plenty of opportunity to meet and greet one an-

other before actually attending a meeting likely to test their debating skills. Apart from the annual meeting and civic reception on Monday 14 November to choose a mayor and deputy mayor, the first meeting as a council will be a “community council meeting” at Somerville on Monday 28 November. By that time, the councillors will have been able to attend seven of nine planned induction sessions to familiarise them with their new public roles and responsibilities. The first induction session on Friday (4 November) will include an “introduction and welcome” by shire CEO Carl Cowie, briefings by other senior execu-

tives and Terry Bramham, of Macquarie Local Government Lawyers. With federal and state politicians being accused of having a hypocritical sense of entitlement to the use of taxpayer’s money, so too will the new peninsula councillors be scrutinised for their use of ratepayers’ money. The previous council, while seemingly having a set $4000 a year for each councillor to spend on such things as attending conferences and seminars and courses, was eventually told by lawyers that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to seek reimbursement if that amount was exceeded. Expenditure by peninsula councillors far ex-

Two bus tours are planned for councillors, one on 9 December to look at the shire’s Mornington and Hastings offices and Mornington Regional Gallery before lunch at Yaringa Boat Harbour, Somerville. The afternoon will see councillors tour The Briars, Mt Martha; libraries; Pelican Park, Hastings; foreshores and cemeteries. The second bus trip on 8 February will see them inspect “planning and infrastructure and capital works projects”. A councillor Christmas dinner will be held between the two excursions on Wednesday 14 December.

Ulcer risks, mosquitoes on rise Liz Bell liz@mpnews.com.au VICTORIA’S mosquito plague has raised fears that the increased risk of mosquito-born diseases such as the flesh-eating Buruli ulcer - already prevalent on the Mornington Peninsula - could soar. But concerns are falling on deaf ears according to Rye resident Pete Connell, 64, who was infected by the Mycobacterium ulcerans bacteria last year. Mr Connell accuses health authorities and government officials of “passing the buck”. Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula are “hot spots” for the Buruli ulcer, a notifiable illness that worldwide is the third most common bacterial disease after tuberculosis and leprosy (“Flesh-eating ulcers on rise”, The News 17/10/16). Mr Connell has written to more than seven MPs and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in an attempt to have the national health risk upgraded. He believes the coming months pose a serious risk to residents and holidaymakers coming to the peninsula. “Why in 2016 can a hideous, reportable disease not be on any local, state or federal health priority list?” he asked. “Why is no government prepared to take any responsibility? “We the community elect and place our trust in all the forms of government that should be protecting us from this insidious disease.“ Mr Connell said health authorities should be sending health warnings directly to schools and community groups, including aged-care facilities. Data from the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services showed there were 42 cases of Buruli ulcer reported on the Mornington Peninsula by mid-October this year, up from 33 the same period last year. In Frankston, there

were 12 cases, up from seven last year. The health department has just issued a warning to people to take precautions against insect bites, after floods and heavy rains had caused an increase in mosquito numbers. Recent rains and warm weather had provided perfect breeding conditions for the insects, and as a result, the department is bringing forward insect “surveillance and control programs”. People are being warned to protect themselves from bites because of mosquito-borne diseases such as Ross River and Barmah Forest viruses, which cause joint inflammation, pain and rashes. However, despite recognition of an increase in cases on the peninsula and the “changing pattern in geographical distribution of disease”, there are no plans to increase the seriousness of the Buruli ulcer bacteria. He said the department was working “with stakeholders” across Victoria to identify what controls could be put in place. Mornington Peninsula Shire environment protection manager David Dobroszczyk said council will be monitoring mosquito hotspots throughout the peninsula. He said there was advice on how people could protect themselves from mosquito bites on the shire’s website. If left untreated, the bacteria can cause large ulcers that require antibiotics and leave disfiguring scars. A study published in 2012 by Barwon Health, which analysed 180 cases of Bairnsdale/Buruli ulcer managed at Barwon Health from 1998 to 2011, found two cases were so severe it had caused bone infection. Federal Health Minister Sussan Ley told Mr Connell, via Flinders Liberal MP and Science Minister Greg Hunt, that the government had spent about $800,000 on research into the bacteria in recent years. Mr Connell said he had not had a reply from the Prime Minister.

Poison campaign follows park dog ban Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au PARKS Victoria has warned residents abutting the Mornington Peninsula National Park that it is about to begin poisoning foxes and feral cats in the park. The baiting program follows the total ban of dogs in the park from today (Tuesday 1 November). The 2686-hectare national park, includes 42 kilometres of coastline fronting Bass Strait from Flinders to London Bridge, near Portsea. Parks Victoria’s area chief ranger, Southern Peninsula, Kris Rowe, said the bait being used at the Point Nepean and Mornington Peninsula national parks was the “more humane” PAPP (para-aminopropiophenone). He said animals poisoned with PAPP usually fell asleep and died quickly. “All baiting programs within parks adhere to strict user guidelines and application specifications for the bait in use,” Mr Rowe said. “Parks Victoria staff and contractors have legal obligations to follow and specific accreditation to do so. Strict guidelines apply, such as preparing and burying the baits to reduce the risk to non-target species.” St Andrews resident Graeme Manie described the baiting program as “an act of gross negligence at best”. “The area [to be] baited is occupied by residents and their domestic pets and many types of birds and other wildlife, both native and introduced,” he said. “A bait laid for the introduced spe-

cies is completely random and has an equal chance of killing both the native fauna and the domestic animals.” He said meat-eating birds, such as magpies, could drop the baited meat in backyards where they could be eaten by domestic animals or even toddlers. Mr Rowe said magpies were unlikely to find the baits “given they are buried as per the strict directions that are in place”. He said the dog ban from 1 November in the national park would enable Parks Victoria to expand its fox and

feral cat control programs. “This will increase the program’s effectiveness and give native fauna, particularly threatened species, their best chance of survival.” Over the past six years cameras monitoring the national parks had shown that foxes frequent the same areas as native birds and animals. Results of the monitoring show where native fauna is under the greatest threat and where traps can be set for foxes and cats, particularly during shorebird breeding season in spring

and early summer. Dogs have never been allowed in Point Nepean National Park, but have until now been given restricted access to parts of Mornington Peninsula National Park. Russell Joseph, spokesman for Nepean MP, Liberal Martin Dixon, said all three major parties supported banning dogs in the national park and follows a review showing that many dog owners were not complying with trial dogwalking restrictions introduced in 2013. The national park has more than 32

fauna species of significance, including the threatened hooded plover, migratory shorebirds, marsupials, including the white-footed dunnart and the long-nosed bandicoot, and reptiles, including the blue-tongued lizard. “All these native animals will directly benefit from the dog ban,” Mr Rowe said. “Many are susceptible to dog attacks and even the scent and barking of dogs can cause distress. “Removing dogs from the park will enable [us] to broaden the pest fox-andcat programs to increase their effectiveness and give a range of threatened species their best chance of survival.” Mr Rowe attended last week’s launch of the dog ban at Koonya beach as did Parks Victoria’s director of regional operations Libby Jude, chief conservation science officer Dr Mark Norman, Friends of the Hooded Plover president Diane Lewis and Birdlife Australia’s Glenn Ehmke. The reintroduction fox and wild dog bounty is an acknowledgement that the pests are “beyond eradication” and require ongoing management by public and private land owners, an Agriculture Department statement says. They prey on livestock, especially lambs, inflicting significant economic and production loss to Victoria's livestock sector, and are believed to have a “significant impact” on native fauna. Parks Victoria says its “integrated management approach” includes poison baiting, trapping, exclusion fencing, fumigation and hunting. A bounty of $10 is paid for each fox and $120 for each wild dog killed. Dog ban ‘ransom to protect a few birds’, Letters, Page 10

Green light for $95 million Yaringa plan THE state government has given the go ahead for a $95 million extension of Yaringa Boat Harbour, near Somerville. The $95 million harbour expansion was announced by Planning Minister Richard Wynne yesterday (Monday). The announcement follows public consultation, Commonwealth approval and and conditions from an independent panel.

Eastern Victoria Region MP Daniel Mulino said the project included adding 180 wet berths to the existing boat harbour to be accessed along a new channel, 400 new dry berths, 180 tourist accommodation units, new marine services facilities, 120-seat restaurant and a conference centre. “[It] will mean Yaringa is able to satisfy the growing demand for qual-

ity marina berths, undercover storage, repair and maintenance facilities and tourist accommodation in the area, Mr Mulino said. “This project will generate new jobs on the site and in the local economy. It’s a win for the region and will deliver a real boost to the Western Port area. “We’ve included conditions to ensure this project is built in a way that

respects the surrounding environment, including the wonderful and important Western Port wetlands. Mr Mulino said up to 860 jobs will be created during the two-year construction period and about 200 jobs once completed. The improvements would reflect community feedback, with continuing public access to the foreshore and across the site, as well as

space for a horse trail on the northern and western boundaries. “The project will be developed in a way that is sensitive to the surrounding marine environment, including the ecologically important Western Port RAMSAR site, he said. “It will not impact on the operating hours or potential expansion of the nearby Port of Hastings. Stephen Taylor

Weather no match for style SUNDAY was a day of contrasts for racegoers at the Ladbrokes Peninsula Cup. Sunny and warm turned to rain, windy and cold by the time of the feature race. While the 1600 metre cup was won by Master Reset, followed by Coldstone and Inspector, two-legged entrants in the Ladbrokes Peninsula Cup Style Stakes had been pictured showing off their wares in the warm and dry surroundings of a photographic studio. The 184 style entrants chose what they saw as their three best shots and submitted them to the judges. Judge Janice Breen Burns said that despite the day’s four seasons “the enthusiasm that came through the camera lens proved that the digital entry mechanic was a hit with racegoers. “The energy and thrill of all those who entered was obvious when looking through the entries, she said. “What we saw today was a very sleek and elegant selection of women, men and squads. John Greenall won the men’s fashion stakes, Blanch Milford the women’s and Kyle Piscopo and a friend in the squads.

WHO would leave a child alone in a car on a hot day? No-one would be silly enough do that, would they? Sadly, quite a few people do – and this time of year the warmer weather makes incidents even more dangerous. “This practice is completely unacceptable,â€? Mornington fire station officer Simon Mildren said. “Many people are unaware of the high temperatures that can occur in a brief moment of sun exposure on a locked vehicle. It can take only minutes for the temperature in a car to become dangerous and life threatening. “The message needs to be clear: Do not leave kids or animals in unattended vehicles.â€? Mr Mildren said fire brigades along the peninsula had already handled a spate of incidents this spring. “The public does not give this issue the importance it deserves.â€? He offered these tips: ď Ž Never let your kids play with your car keys; ď Ž Never let children play in an unattended vehicle. Teach them a vehicle is not a play area; ď Ž If you have to put your keys down while you load the vehicle then put them in the ignition or on the roof of the car; ď Ž Call 000 immediately if you have locked someone in a vehicle, as minutes can save lives. Mr Mildren urged people in a life-threatening situation to not wait for the emergency services to arrive. “They should get into the car to help the child or animal, even if that means breaking a window,â€? he said. “If you see a child left alone in a hot vehicle, always make sure the child is okay and responsive. If not, call 000 immediately.

“If the child appears to be OK, try to find the parents; if the child is not responsive and appears in great distress, attempt to get into the car to assist the child, even if that means breaking a window. Stephen Taylor

Eyewatch link to crime and safety MORNINGTON Peninsula residents can access the police Eyewatch page on Facebook to keep track of crime and community safety information. Victoria Police has been using the platform since 2012 and now has 200,000 followers across 22 Eyewatch pages – with the 23rd page focusing on the peninsula. Inspector Karen Nyholm said the Eyewatch page would give police and the community another way to connect. “It’s a massive plus for the community, allowing residents to interact with their local police online, she said. “We want to give the people of the peninsula an opportunity to contribute to the safety of their community and stay up-to-date with the activity of their local police. “By working together and sharing information, police and residents can make Mornington and surrounding areas safer, as well as more community-minded. “The Eyewatch pages have proven to be a successful tool in identifying offenders, solving crimes and finding missing people. “Eyewatch should not be used for reporting crime or as a replacement for calling Triple 000 in an emergency, media officer Luke Zammit said.

‘Walking on air’ in world series Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au BASEBALLER Jayson Arthur had the time of his life playing in the Senior League World Series in Bangor, Maine, US. The Bittern player, 16, who plays for Sandringham Royals in summer and Dandenong Angels in winter, was a member of the Southern Mariner’s Baseball Charter which won through regional tournaments in Geelong, then the Senior League Nationals at Lismore, on their way to the “big stage” in the US. “We went through that tournament undefeated and I led the batting average with 825 and was really happy with the way I played,” said Jayson, who attends Dromana Secondary College. After that it was on to the Pacific Senior League Baseball Tournament in the Philippines to determine who would go on to America. “We went from being Team Mariners to Team Australia and were on a hot streak, with everyone performing well and doing their job,” he said. “We kept that momentum all the way through, winning games 30-1 and 17-4 to take out the Asia pacific senior league baseball tournament undefeated, giving us our ticket to the big stage. “From our first game to the last

game in Asia Pacific, we had a win-toloss ratio of 17-0: it was insane and it felt like we could do anything.” The left handed pitcher and first baseman said that, despite the onset of nerves and 33 hours of travelling, the team did well losing only one game to reach the championship game against the Centrals team of Chicago – the only team to beat them in the preliminaries. “When we arrived at the fields it was surreal, with the dirt on the infield amazing, the pitcher’s mound Heaven and the outfield grass felt like we were walking on air,” he recalled. “However, we didn’t get off to a great start which upset the tone for our team. Later on we started to build momentum, with runners on second and third with no one out. Then, a thunder storm hit, which destroyed our comeback as we came back out feeling flat. We lost that game 7-2 which made Chicago the Senior League Champions of the World. “It was pretty hard going all that way and losing but, at the end of the day, we worked hard and accomplished what we wanted to do: play in the Senior League World Series.” Parents Peter and Theresa, and sisters Sarah and Amy, are proud of their boy whose dream is to attend a college in America and further his baseball and, hopefully, one day play in major league baseball.

Author talks on tragic tale ABC journalist Paul Kennedy will visit Hastings library next month to talk about his book detailing one of Australia’s worst sporting disasters, 1pm, Tuesday 8 November. His novel Fifteen Young Men: Australia’s Untold Football Tragedy describes the loss of 15 Mornington Football Club players and officials who drowned while sailing home from Mordialloc on a cold night in 1892. His compelling recreation is of a spirited Australian town on the cusp of a new century. It captures the trauma of families and friends suffering almost unbearable loss, but also the irrepressible optimism of the times and the mateship, love and resilience that would come to define a budding nation. Bookings are essential. Visit ourlibrary.mornpen.vic.gov.au or call 5950 1820.

Fire ‘landscaping’ A “landscaping for bushfire” workshop will be held at Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Eco Living Display Centre 10am–11am on Saturday 5 November. The session costs $5 a person and all proceeds go to the CFA. Tea, coffee and snacks available. Bookings: mornpen.vic.gov.au/eventslisting.

Dog ban ‘ransom to protect a few birds’ We are writing to you with regards to the banning of dogs on the Mornington Peninsula National Park ocean beaches from 1 November (“Dog bans to help end angered birds”, The News 18/10/16).. We and many others are bewildered by this decision, which will have a huge impact on the dog walkers. The decision to ban dogs is to protect the hooded plovers. Are we being held to ransom by a few birds? We have resided near 16th Beach, Rye, for the past 20 years and walk our dogs most days and conform to regulations by being off the beach by 9am. The morning beach walk is a great way to socialise and dogs are a great catalyst for people to walk. We thought Parks Victoria’s motto was “healthy people, healthy parks”. The area we live in has narrow, winding roads, no footpaths and poor drainage. Where are we supposed to walk when these roads are flooded? We pick up the rubbish on the beach, report wildlife in distress, report abalone poachers and put our fires. The hooded plovers are not under threat by domestic dogs; studies have shown they are more vulnerable to foxes, feral cats, ravens and high tides. On 18 October, high tides and large swells brought the water level above the area zoned for the hooded plovers. Maybe Parks should start banning High tides and large swells. This issue could be resolved by better education and better signs on each entrance leading into the national park. This decision seems to satisfy the minority and astounds the locals. We cannot believe the tail is wagging the dog.

We dog walkers also care for the national park and its wildlife and our beautiful beaches, we should not be penalised for the sake of a few. Wayne and Brenda Harding, Rye

Ramp not needed I could not resist, so I put the proposition to a number of Rye locals passing through Rye RSL’s smoking area: “The fourth boat ramp will revitalise Rye.” Needless to say I was met with dumbfounded confusion. A two-question follow up being “Who is the [Mornington Peninsula Shire]

Support goes missing Your revelation that our new councillors will have fewer support staff provided to them from the Mornington Peninsula Shire (“New councillors to lose support” The News 25/10/16)) raises a perennial question: is the tail beginning to wag the dog? The decision by CEO Carl Cowie to make redundant two of the [four existing] support positions to councillors will definitely have detrimental impacts. Mr Cowie, an unelected employee whose salary is paid by ratepayers, has decided that he will take it upon himself to compromise some of the essential roles of councillors even before they take their seats. Ratepayers may well ask why some of the senior positions within the shire were not evaluated and possibly amalgamated. I could suggest two at least. Ratepayers should not become too alarmed at this point. After the planning debacle in respect of the Continental Hotel [Sorrento] and the adjacent shire-owned car park, I believe the tenure of the CEO and some of his acolytes might be truncated. Wayne Chamley, Blairgowrie

Landfill ‘collapse’ The election campaign to keep the Rye landfill open has all but collapsed. The Rye landfill site would close only to landfill. Residents would still be able to dispose of green waste, cardboard, old chairs and such at Rye. Landfill waste would no longer be carted from heavily permanently populated parts of the shire – Mornington, Mt Eliza, Somerville, Baxter and Hasting - to be dumped at the Rye landfill. It could be just as easily be carted the same distance, with no additional environment impact,

to the international standard landfill centre at Hampton Park. Closing the Rye site to landfill, would reduce council greenhouse gas emissions by 48 per cent at a small additional cost of $27 a year a household. This would open up the Rye, Tootgarook, Boneo and Fingal areas to much needed recreational and tourism investment. This would provide desperately required employment to these areas and relief to the long suffering Tootgarook residents living north of the Rye landfill. As to shire debt reduction the landfill advocates have overlooked the shire’s published accounts and budget. Shire debt will be down by $31 million from $43m inherited in 2012 to $12m by 30 June 2017. Hugh Fraser, Rye

Right to protest It is everyone’s right and responsibility as a member of our civil society to peacefully stand up and voice our opposition to policies which are not humane or fair. A rally is one of the traditional ways we have to let our elected members of parliament know when we feel that current policies are immoral and detrimental to people, and which are ultimately affecting Australia’s usually high international standing on matters of human rights. There is a rally on Saturday 5 November at 1pm in front of the State Library, Melbourne which is being held because of the increasing concerns for the asylum seekers and refugees who are now stranded on off shore detention centres. Given all the publicity and reports now clearly showing the detrimental effects of long term detention on people, particularly children, this is an opportunity to show that this situation is not acceptable to Australians. Closing the camps and bringing the refugees here is the key message of this rally. It is supported by many reputable organisations including Grandmothers Against the Detention of Refugee Children. Everyone concerned about Australia’s current policies on refugees should use their right to protest. Ann Renkin, Shoreham

CFA helps its own A $1000 donation by Tyabb Fire Brigade to the struggling Kongwak rural CFA brigade is part of the Help for Dairy initiative bringing together brigades from all over Victoria. The initiative encourages partnerships between city and country brigades, helping them get together to exchange skills and provide mutual ongoing support. The

recipients choose how the money is spent, and prioritise their local equipment and resource needs. With its strong rural history, Tyabb’s members empathise with those on the land and have no hesitation in supporting them. “We have no doubt that if a major fire was to impact Tyabb or nearby, then brigades like Kongwak would be travelling to help us,” Tyabb Captain Stephen Birkinshaw said. “So it’s in all our interests to ensure these rural brigades remain viable when affected by circumstances outside their control. Strauss Upholstery WHEN you’ve worked as a furniture maker for 35 years like Stephen Strauss, you definitely know what you are doing and now the local craftsman has brought his business to Hastings. Strauss Upholstery has relocated to Hastings two months ago and offers a one of a kind service to peninsula customers. “My father was a wellknown furniture maker for many years and taught me everything I know. I started out as a kid of 15 and am a fully qualified furniture maker and upholster,” said Stephen, who is proud of the fact he does things old school. “My father came here in 1958 from Austria, and I learnt everything from leather work to buttoning. I specialise in antique work, sprung work on cushions, anything that has to be done in the traditional way.” Stephen also specialises in leather work, French polishing, and restoration work. “I do anything with old couches and chairs, starting with repairing them first and then reupholstering them. I also have free pick-up and delivery.” Strauss Upholstery is open seven days from 9am till 6pm, at Shop 6 High Street, Hastings. Phone 0405 797 446

THE BOOK OF MORMON

Tue 18 Apr ‘17 (7.00pm) All $160

IT’S not that unusual to develop a cough after spending weeks either in air conditioned rooms and cars or outside on 40 degree days. On his first back in England after three weeks in the Middle East Alan Cane woke up wrapped in clammy sheets. He coughed and there was blood in his handkerchief. A visit to the doctor led to blood tests and an x-ray. Two days later he was admitted to a sanatorium with tuberculosis, TB. This all happened in the mid-1970s and such a diagnosis, even then, was commonly regarded as a death sentence. Antibiotics meant this was no longer the case, but there remained a stigma attached to TB. Now nearing 70, Cane has written a biographical novel about the 1000 days that followed his diagnosis. He readily admits that three years does not make a life, but the six months of relative isolation spent in the sanatorium (including surgery to remove part of a lung) turned his life around. Although he hadn’t been fired, it soon became apparent after returning to work that his employer no longer needed, or wanted, him on the payroll. The company had been supportive throughout his illness “but I was damaged goods; they didn’t want to know me”. Cane now lives at Mt Eliza with his wife Susana, who also features in the book, first as a part of a double date in Singapore and then as his wife. They have four children. A picture of Susana is on the cover of Cane’s “true life memoir”. He says it’s not necessary for the cover image “to be relevant to the content”. Cane’s A breathless odyssey does not hold back on the pleasure seeking times and exploits of a late 20s business man based in Singapore after surviving a life-threatening disease. His

wife, he says, gave her approval to the sexual content and references “but there are two chapters devoted to her – she knocked me off my feet [when I met her]”. Once out of the sanatorium (a forbidding Edwardian building now truned into trendy apartments) Cane was offered a job within six months by a rival to his former employer. But this time his base would be in Asia rather than the Middle East. Cane grabs the opportunity with both hands, becoming “expertly familiar with Asian business practices”. A chemical engineer who had graduated from Manchester University, Cane worked in both the technical and marketing fields of water purification. “I was a pioneer, taking [this technology] to the region,” he says. Cane says wanted to “document something that was important to me” and explains to future generations of his family “how Chinese blood came into their DNA”.

ALAN Cane

“I was the first European to take one of my wife’s [12 brothers and sisters] from Singapore. “The book [was written] as more of an indulgence than to make money, but I’ll be happy to recover costs.” Cane had written two previous books, both calling on his wide knowledge and experience of doing business in the Middle East and South East Asia. They were written after he brought his young family to live in Australia in 1984 on the back of an offer to participate in a development project based in Melbourne. The project failed and he saw there was value in his experience, and realised having a published book was a way to become known as an expert. A go to man for quotes, newspaper columns, consulting and speaking on “the seminar circuit”. Happily for Cane, his decision to live in Australia coincided with the urgings from some federal MPs (Paul Keating for one) for business leaders to embrace the idea of looking to Asia for business as well as the more traditional markets in Europe and the United States. “Just spouting out what I knew led to my success,” he says. Some of the advice he gave included “just speaking another language isn’t a recipe for success” and “don’t pretend you are something more than you are”. “You can intimidate people if you profess to be an expert in business and languages. Remember, people are looking for simple solutions.” Now retired, Cane says his life revolves around family. He plays some golf, brews craft beer and enjoys cooking. He is also available for speaking engagements. Alan Cane’s “A breathless Odyssey” will be officially launched at Frankston Library 6.307.30pm Wednesday 14 December. 100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...

Mrs Bray of Frankston dies suddenly Compiled by Cameron McCullough IT is our painful duty to record still another death in the person of Mrs Bray, wife of Mr H Bray, Frankston. Mrs Bray who was in her usual health on Sunday, took suddenly ill and died the same evening from apoplexy. Mrs Bray who was only 54 years of age, was an old identity of Frankston, and her sudden death was a great shock to her many friends. Although not enjoying the best of health for some time past, the deceased was able to attend to her duties till the last. Much sympathy is expressed for Mr Bray and the three sons in their sad and sudden bereavemeut. The remains were interred in the Frankston cemetery, the Rev. Mr McFarlane conducting the services. *** WE have received a communication from someone signing himself “The Nut” Somerville, but unless the proper name and address of the writer is forwarded, not necessarily for publication, but as a guarantee of good faith, we must decline to publish same. This rule will be rigorously enforced in all future communications. *** DR Sidney Plowman has, in addition to the offices he already holds, been appointed Lecturer in Chemistry to the Melbourne College of Pharmacy and Director of the Chemical Laboratories of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia for the year 1917.

*** THE “Wattle Club” will hold one of their popular dances on Saturday a (this) evening, when good music, an excellent floor, and various other details, will render a good time a foregone conclusion. *** WE direct the attention of our readers to an advertisement of the Somerville Red Cross Society stating that a Spring Show and Jumble Fair will be held in the Somerville Hall on Friday and Saturday, Nov 10th and 11th. The Fair will be opened by Cr Geo. Griffeth, at 7. 30 on Friday. *** THE General meeting of the Somerville Fruitgrowers’ Horticultural and Agricultural Association, will be held on Monday next, November 6th, at 8pm, in the Mechanics’ Institute. Business: —Allotment of five £5 debentures, Show, and other matters. *** THE anniversary of the Frankston Methodist Sunday School will be held on Sunday, the 12th inst, when the Rev A. C. Adamson, B A., will preach morning, afternoon and evening. On the following Monday evening the anniversary will be further celebrated when the children will render musical and other items. *** A SOCIAL evening, under the auspices of the Frankston Branch of Red Cross Society, is advertised to be held in the Mechanics’ Hall, on Friday, November 10th, when a good time is promised to patrons.

Cards, music, and dancing will fill the programme, and the proceeds are to be devoted to provide Xmas Cheer for the boys in the Langwarrin Military Hospital. As the admission is only one shilling, everybody should make a point of being there. *** LIEUTENANT J. J. Rudduch, of Dromana, who was rejected for military service here, and paid his passage to London, where he, enlisted, and received a commission in the Royal Lancaster Regiment, was recently in action in France. He volunteered for a dangerous undertaking, in which all his men were killed. He received a a wound in the left arm, which was subsequently amputated. He is now convalescent, and his services will be retained in England for training recruits. His brother, Mr Ernest Rudduch, recently sold his business at Dromana and Rosebud to volunteer, and is now in camp. *** ON Sunday next, November 5th at the 11 a.m. service, the vicar of St Paul’s Church, Frankston, will preach on the Ethics of Gambling. The service in the evening (7pm) will take the form of an “In Memoriam” for the late Mrs O’Grady. Her many friends, it is felt, would like this opportunity of showing their respect to her memory. Captain Condor has kindly consented to allow the military band to

take part in the musical portion of the service. All who wish to attend will be made welcome. *** THE Moorabbin Annual Spring Show takes place at the Cheltenham Recreation Reserve on Saturday 11th November. This Society last year raised £138 for the Sick and Wounded Soldiers Fund. This year the Committee is endeavouring to raise £200 for the Soldiers Repatriation Fund. The various classes comprise the usual agricultural sections, whilst a feature of the Moorabbin Show has always been the Live Stock and Cattle Sections. Entries close on Tuesday 7th inst. Schedules and entry forms may be obtained on application to the Secretary, Show Office, Cheltenham. Telephone 21. *** A DEPUTATION from Seaford, introduced by Mr A Downward, M.L.A., interviewed the Chairman of the State Rivers and Water Supply, on Tuesday last, with a request that the flood waters now covering their land should be pumped out. It was pointed out that the flood was caused by the banks being left in disrepair. After the matter had been fully discussed, Mr Cattenach informed the deputation that no money was available for pumping, and suggested that a meeting be called of those interested, with a view of doing the

work themselves, or if they presented a petition of a good majority of those interested, he would find the money and spread payment of same over three years. The deputation consisted of Cr Oates, and Messrs Irwin, Armstrong, Martin, Jennings and Draper. *** Frankston Court of Petty Sessions. Monday 30th Oct, 1916. Before Messrs W. J. Oates and C. W Grant Js P. Joseph Dean (an officer of the Victorian Railways Commissioners) proceeded against several persons for breaches of the Railway by-laws regarding travelling without correct tickets. THE MEANING OF EXISTENCE... AND OTHER SHORT STORIES

Close encounters of the rock star kind By Stuart McCullough THE moment I enter, I know I don’t belong. Having spent the morning shopping with my nephew we arrive in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, with plastic bags hanging like Christmas ornaments from our wrists. Unwittingly, we have stumbled upon the epicenter of the hipster universe; a place where facial piercings are deliberate as opposed to the legacy of some tragic industrial accident, where man buns roam free. I look hopelessly lost. But, for better or worse, this is the place we’ve agreed to meet friends for lunch. The restaurant is dark, with cool wooden floors and garish wall decorations. Much like the butterfly enclosure at Melbourne Zoo, the room has been scientifically designed with its inhabitants in mind. This is an atmosphere in which hipsters will not just survive but flourish. It’s wonderful to view them up close in their natural environment and I’m acutely aware that, one day, restaurants such as this will be the only place people will ever see hipsters up close. For hipsters, like SNAGs, Teddy Boys and Tyrannosaurus Rex before them, are destined to fade into extinction. Then I see him. He is seated at the table across from us. Dressed in black jeans, a leather jacket and sunglasses, he looks exactly like a musician should look when they duck out for a spot of brunch. Gareth Liddiard of the Drones is a bona fide rock star. By which I mean that he’s not some moderately talented wannabe frittering away a few years between finishing Uni and succumbing to a career in graphic design

Source: Instagram @thedronesofficial

by releasing a couple of competent but ultimately forgettable records. Instead, Gareth is an extraordinary lyricist who creates compelling albeit unsettling music. It’s not for everyone,

but I think his work is magnificent. I try not to look over in his direction, but it’s hard not to. If I wander over and ask for a picture, will I make his day? Or is being accosted by a

middle aged man who’s just finished shopping at H & M and is suffering an acute case of retail delirium (a heady mix of physical fatigue, dehydration and general sensory overload) going to put him off his meal? I start to imagine how I might break the ice… Me: Either you’re Gareth from the Drones or you’d be odds-on favourite to win a Gareth Liddiard look-alike competition. Him: (cue relaxed laughter) Let’s take a picture together! And while we’re at it, would you like to join us onstage this evening? It never happens. Instead, I settle for a series of furtive but (hopefully) discreet glances between bouts of attempting to understand the menu. The menu is so utterly verbose as to be practically meaningless. When one of our group offers to order share plates, I am grateful to be relieved of any responsibility. The waitress – tattooed, pierced and with a facial countenance that could turn the tide - asks me what I’d like to drink. It’s then that I make a catastrophic mistake. Knowing I’m out of place, my strategy is to be a ‘low maintenance’ customer. I order coffee which prompts the super-grumpy waitress to ask what kind of milk I want. Without thinking, I answer ‘regular milk.’ This is the wrong answer, as evidenced by the near full-facial collapse of the person taking my order. She sighs a deep, difficult sigh as though I have extinguished a part of her soul. It’s at that moment that I’m informed that we’re at a vegan café where there are no animal products for sale. My attempt to be low-maintenance has backfired

spectacularly. In fact, it couldn’t have gone any worse had I waltzed in wearing two porterhouse steaks for shoes and demanded a hat made of bacon. My only hope is that Gareth hasn’t noticed this faux pas and he doesn’t think less of me as a result. But I am puzzled. Even though we are in a vegan restaurant with a strictly enforced ‘no real milk’ policy, the menu is littered with carnivorous offerings – chorizo, calamari and the like. Only later do I learn that these ingredients aren’t really chorizo and calamari but something called ‘quorn’, a meat substitute made from an edible fungus. Thinking back, the menu was so full of quorn that it could well be described as ‘quornographic’. When the calamari arrives, I dive right in. It’s quite tasty but a little chewy and I can’t help but notice that the waitress is now missing a shoe. It’s hard not to conclude that the appearance of the faux calamari and disappearance of a piece of footwear are somehow related. Gareth finishes his meal before I do. As he gets up, I wonder if this is my last chance to declare my undying affection for his work and – technology willing – get a photo. But I can’t bring myself to do it. There’s something about intercepting someone on the way to the bathroom that feels, well, undignified. Perhaps it’s better this way. The fact that he’s worn his sunglasses through the entire meal in a dark room only proves how much of a rock star he really is. That’s because Gareth from the Drones is, in stark contrast to the calamari, the real deal. stuart@stuartmccullough.com

O’Malley, Warwick score big tons PROVINCIAL By IT Gully PENINSULA Old Boys’ and Baxter stars Dylan O’Malley and Daniel Warwick continued their dominant starts to the season with a massive 154 and 141 respectively in Round 3 of Provincial cricket on Saturday. O’Malley has already chalked up over 200 runs in three hits this season with scores of 24, 46 and now 154 against Pines on the weekend. Fellow opening bat Wade Pelzer has also blasted his way into the new season with 130 run in three innings after scoring 94 against Pines. Peninsula Old Boys finished their 80 overs in excellent condition at 5/345. Matty Hyden scored 39.

Harley Parker was the best of Pines bowlers with 3/102 from 33 overs. Craig Entwhistle bowled 1.3 overs before being forced to throwing the nugget to Damien Lawrence, who finished his over. Down the road at Baxter, the Rolls Royce that is Warwick also opened the innings against Sorrento and hit 16 fours and two sixes on his way to an unbeaten 141. Warwick has 233 runs in the three innings this season after scores of 38, 54 and 141. Chris Brittain also continued his great start to the season (13, 61 and 57) with a half century before being run out and Justin Bridgeman was solid again with 43. Ben Matters came in at the end of the innings and

scored a quick fire 42, helping his side to 7/298 before declaring the innings. That declaration with four overs left in the day proved to be a master stroke with two wickets falling in the final 25 balls of the day (one no ball). Jack Falck and Mick Dunball (six) were both sent packing by Chamika Sattambi (2/7) in his opening spell for the season. Mooroduc recruit Shamith Kannangara was another who scored a ton on Saturday, this time against Pearecdale. Kannangara was a shining light for the Ducs who managed to score 8/239 against the Panthers with Ben Williams opening with 40 and Carey Sawosz scoring 33 batting at nine.

Will Kennedy bowled just 12 overs in the opening two games of the season but bowled 22 on Saturday with a return of 4/72 to be the best of the Panthers’ bowlers. Kaine Smith also snared 3/50 from 22 overs. Langwarrin has set Crib Point 241 for victory at Crib Point Reserve after scoring a competitive total on Saturday. The Kangas won the toss and batted first with Simon McEvoy and Aaron Edwards top scoring with 55 each, skipper Trav Campbell hitting 42 and Joel Bateman 37. Jacob Cook usually gives the Kangas a tough time and he was the pick of the bowlers with 2/37. Glenn Barclay and Henry Dolphin also claimed a couple of wickets each.

Mt Eliza will need to produce something strong with the ball to defend its 6/196 against Long Island. Keith Biggs top scored for the Mounties with an unbeaten 56 while Timmy Strickland offered strong support with 45 and Jordan Fuhrmann hit 38. James Paxton did a lot of work with the ball for the Islanders, bowling 26 overs and finishing with 3/68. Chris Hocking also bowled extremely well in his 26 overs, finishing with eight maidens and a return of 2/75. The Islanders faced the final three overs of the day without loss. Mornington will defend 254 against Somerville at the Eagles’ nest.

The Demons’ painful start continues DISTRICT By IT Gully Rye’s pain continued in round three of MPCA District cricket after losing 14 wickets in 45 overs against Mt Martha on Saturday. After a disastrous 2015-16 season which saw the Demons relegated, they have started the new season pickingup where they left off – in trouble! In just two and a half games of cricket so far this season, the Demons have lost a staggering 42 wickets for just 312 runs. On Saturday against the Reds, the Demons batted first and were rolled for just 79 in 35 overs.

PAGE 44

Rhys Whitling snagged five wickets for Mt Martha while Matt Travena was the highest Rye run scorer with 14. The Reds didn’t fare much better with the bat in reply. Chasing quick runs, they got themselves in a little bit of strife before eventually declaring after 35 overs at 9/115. Tom Baron and Max Cairns snared 4/49 and 4/44 respectively for Rye. That gave Mt Martha the final 10 overs of the day to eat into the Rye top order, which they successfully did taking 4/20. The evergreen Nick Christides blasted 130 for Delacombe Park as they amassed 316 against Baden Powell. In was vintage Christides who took

to the Braves’ bowling attack with contempt as he smacked five fours and 10 sixes on his way to his century. Jon Guthrie had the best seat in the house at the other end, scoring 31 of the opening stand of 140 before he lost his wicket. The Parkers went from 0/140 to 6/230 before Evan Campbell came in at the end and hit a quick 61. The Braves faced the final four overs of the day and lost Tyson Jackson to Rob Fisher for one. The Braves will resume on day two at 1/10. Billy Quigley top scored for Rosebud with 85 runs and Matt Maher scored 41 as the home side whipped up 9/184 against Flinders.

Max Royal was the best of the Sharks’ bowlers with 3/46. A total of 12 wickets fell on the opening day of the match between Seaford Tigers and Red Hill. The Tigers batted first and were dismissed for 147 with Ash Mills top scoring with 61. Lincoln Toy helped himself to 4/35 and Glenn Collett has started the season in fine fashion, adding 2/29 to his solid start. In reply, the Hillmen wouldn’t have been happy losing 2/14 with 18-yearold Max Watters picking up 2/9 for the Tigers. Heatherhill has already won its match against Seaford. The Hills rolled Seaford for just 109

in 48.4 overs with Jon Powell collecting 3/12 off seven overs to be the pick of the Hills’ bowlers. The Hills then replied with 5/188 with Jake Theobald unbeaten on 55. The match between Boneo and Main Ridge looks in the balance on the scoreboard after day one but the Ridge have enormous batting talent. Boneo batted first after losing the toss and were bowled out for just 133. Luke Collins was the best of the Ridge bowlers with 5/36 from 19 overs while Travis Barker picked up 2/11 off four overs. The Ridge faced the last 15 overs of the day and lost 2/35.

Greenwood gets maiden ton in knock SUB-DISTRICT

By IT Gully YOUNG Frankston YCW top order batsman Jack Greenwood scored his maiden First XI century against Dromana in Sub District cricket on Saturday. Greenwood has always looked like being a run machine and he found his groove in a dominant performance batting at four on the weekend, scoring 102 of his side’s total of 232. With support coming from Jason Bedford (23) and Brett Hudgson (25), Greenwood was able to notch up his first ton. Jye Voelkl picked up 3/36 off 14 overs for the Hoppers while Jeff Bluhm helped himself to 3/34 off 12 overs. Having to face the final three overs of the day, the Stonecats picked up the all-important wicket of Dromana skipper Jack Fowler for a duck, care of teenage opening quick Sammy Fulton. Hastings is in the box seat against Balnarring after Ashley Coles went agonising close to a century on the first day. The Blues put together 245 with Coles getting 99. In reply, the Saints are in a spot of

bother at 3/26. Tyabb has set Carrum Downs a healthy chase of 315 in their match at the pond. Travis French top scored for the Frogs with 56. In reply, Skye is 1/6 with AJ King being the wicket taker for the home side. Carrum’s bowlers have got their team back into the match against Ballam Park. The Lions batted first and made 156 with Campbell Ak top scoring with 71.
