Australia Day 2017

Wilson Rocks Australia Day WHEN you’ve been in the music industry as long as Ross Wilson, doing a gig like Australia Day is a lot more like fun than hard work. Ross Wilson and the Peaceniks will hit the peninsula this Australia Day, January 26, for a rocking concert at the Mornington Foreshore. From Daddy Cool to Mondo Rock, as a solo artist to songwriter, Ross Wilson is one of Australia’s most respected and well-known artists. From the legendary band Daddy Cool whose number one anthem Eagle Rock smashed all previous sales records in Australia to the 1977 formation of Mondo Rock, delivering hits such as ‘Cool World’, ‘State of The Heart’, ‘Chemistry’, ‘No Time’, and ‘Come said The Boy’ before Ross left to pursue a solo career. Finding fame and fortune with Daddy Cool in the early 70s, Wilson says he realized after the band dispersed how hard it had been to handle that kind of notoriety. “I kind of realized I was a bit nuts at the time. First of all you go around and the spotlight is on you and you become a bit overwhelmed, so when Mondo Rock took off I was more prepared,” said Wilson, who started out singing in the school choir and in a band at school. “I grew up in a musical household so got into my first band at school, and playing gigs weekends. Then I decided to take a leap off the ledge without a net and got into it full time,” says Wilson. “My parents were very supportive. Dad really never mentioned it as a problem and over time I proved to him that I

could make it work.” As for longevity, Wilson says being in the position of a lead singer and a writer gives him the ability to marshal all the forces together and direct what’s going on, as well producing other albums like Skyhooks. “When I saw Skyhooks I sort of became their mentor. I was sticking up for them and watching out for them in the industry. I was really glad they signed with Mushroom because I didn’t want

them to be censored.” The most difficult part of the 40-year journey, he says, was being young and a little naïve.“When you start off young and full of enthusiasm you tend to be more trusting so you have to learn. It’s the classic story of artists being exploited. These days it’s a lot more business like though with more resources available. There was no such thing as showbiz lawyers and little advice when we started out.”

These days Wilson’s musical tastes are varied. “My musical style has changed a bit I think and I’m always looking for something different. I’m a music omnivore,” he says with a laugh. “We will definitely play Eagle Rock though. Its Australia day so what could be more Australian than Eagle rock?” Ross Wilson and the Peaceniks will be at Mornington Australia Day on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at the Mornington foreshore.

Health move FLINDERS MP Greg Hunt has been handed the federal health portfolio in the wake of the politicians’ entitlements revelations that led to the demise of former Health Minister Sussan Ley. One of his first calls after the announcement of a mini ministerial reshuffle by the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was Frankston Hospital. During his hospital visit Mr Hunt responded to media questions about his own travel expenses, spoke with staff and then did a round of wards, meeting and comforting patients. “Travel troubles accompany Hunt’s health job” Page 7 Picture: Yanni

Hastings has role in hydrogen plans Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au A PILOT project to produce hydrogen from brown coal will require the gas to be liquefied near Hastings before being shipped to Japan. Kawasaki Heavy Industries says it will release more details of the project

“in the first quarter of 2017 for consideration and consultation”. The company says it has been “exploring the opportunity” to create a hydrogen energy supply chain from Australia to Japan for more than six. During that time discussions had been held with state and federal governments, industry and research organisations.

“The initiative is well known,” general manager of Kawasaki’s hydrogen development centre, Dr Eiichi Harada, said in a statement issued by consultants, GHD Australia. Mr Harada said Kawasaki “is not and has never been involved in plans to process coal at Western Port”. Flinders MP Greg Hunt, who was environment minister during the time

Libs’ crime forum to send message to Andrews Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au A SHORTAGE of police on the Mornington Peninsula and “surging crime rates” are issues to be discussed at a public meeting in Rosebud next month. The Law and Order forum being hosted by Nepean MP Martin Dixon will focus on “some of the massive increases in local crime, police numbers and other law and order issues” raised by those attending. Mr Dixon will speak on what he cites as a 67 per cent increase in sexual offences – up from 184 to 308 cases from September 2015 to September 2016; and a 58 per cent increase in robberies – from 24 to 38 in the 12-month period. Also in the frame are what he says are the slow response times to 000 calls and inadequate staffing levels at peninsula police stations. The public forum is at 6.30-8.30pm, Tuesday 14 February, at Rosebud Country Club. Other speakers will be Police, Corrections and Community Safety spokesman Ed O’Donohue, AttorneyGeneral’s spokesman John Pesuto, Mornington Peninsula Acting Inspector Brett Coloe and police association secretary Ron Iddles. Mr Dixon highlighted burglaries (up 40 per cent, from 1088 cases to 1524

in 12 months), arson (up 38 per cent from 67 to 93), drug cultivation (up 23 per cent from 48 to 59), weapons and explosives offences (up 26 per cent from 323 to 409), and public nuisance offences (up 80 per cent from 52 to 94) as evidence of a rising crime rate. “The state government is soft on crime and refusing to deal with our soaring local crime rates,” Mr Dixon said. “The Mornington Peninsula has seen a dramatic overall increase in crime since Labor took office in 2014, with total offences up over 21 per cent. “Sexual offences have increased by a staggering 67.4 per cent in the past

year alone, burglaries up by over 40 per cent and robberies up by over 58 per cent, but still Labor refuses to act and properly resource our police.” Mr Dixon said a “public safety crisis [had] been entirely created by Labor’s soft-on-crime approach and our community is now paying the price”. “We will send a very clear message to the Premier [Daniel Andrews] that we have had enough.” Mr Dixon’s electorate office manager Russell Joseph said the “state government’s freeze on hiring more police and changes to bail laws had made it easier for criminals”.

Cops’ spray ends wild night out POLICE capsicum sprayed an abusive young woman, as well as an intoxicated man who “fronted up” to police, during a wild night in Mornington early last week. Another woman, 19, was among a group of revellers in their late teens and early 20s arrested for drunken behaviour after milling crowds spilled out of Main St hotels and bars early Sunday morning, 15 January. The five offenders were locked up for four hours before being released with $622 penalty notices. Acting Senior Sergeant Chris Stock, of Mornington police, said ambulance crews treated the woman at the scene

for 45 minutes after she was sprayed, and then helped the sprayed man. “It was a public order issue,” he said. “They threatened our members and were locked up for being drunk in a public place.” Weekend revellers milling around and “testing the patience” of police are becoming commonplace in Main St’s hotel zone. “They give a bit of lip and try to get away with it, but having police there early in the piece stops them from assaulting others,” Acting Senior Sergeant Stock said. “It’s happening a lot; it’s a mix of alcohol, kids and testosterone.”

Taste treat: Judge Mitch Skvor and scone contest winner Helen Candy. Picture: Supplied

Scones rise under the tree SHOREHAM Tennis Club’s fundraising event Under the Tree, now in its 12th year, has added the “country cook” to its traditional assortment of musicians, artists, and amateur sportsmen. The summer scone contest made a return last Sunday week with entries

judged by My Kitchen Rules semifinalist Mitch Skvor. Helen Candy’s winning entry was the savory scone which – a judging source confided tongue-in-cheek – had “caused some controversy among the other competitors and their coaches”.

Thinking about volunteering?

To keep powerlines clear of vegetation, we have works in the Somers and Rye area commencing soon. The pruning of street trees will be undertaken in accordance with best practice methods and some trees encroaching into clearance zones may need to be removed. Beat the heat this summer During periods of prolonged and extreme heat, older people are at risk of illness or even death. Age-related changes to the body can reduce its ability to sweat in response to heat, causing dehydration and making them more prone to heat stress. Planning ahead for extreme heat is important. Drink plenty of water; never leave kids, adults or pets in the car; look after those who live alone; and schedule activities during the coolest part of the day. mornpen.vic.gov.au/beattheheat

Brown coal sparks new battle for Hastings Continued from Page 1 “Any proposal would need the approval of the state government and I would urge them not to approve any industrial use at Crib Point,” he said. Acting Resources Minister Philip Dalidakis said the state government “has been working with Kawasaki Heavy Industries and the Commonwealth on an engineering study to investigate the possible production of hydrogen from brown coal”. “This project is in the very early stages and we are keen to explore all serious investments that have the potential to create much needed jobs in the Latrobe Valley.” Unemployment in the valley is about to rise with the close of the Hazelwood power plant. Hastings MP Neale Burgess last week said Kawasaki Heavy Industries has signed a “secret deal” with the state government that could lead to “long coal trains or a coal slurry pipe bringing huge amounts of coal to Hastings, building of a huge coal gasification plant at Hastings and the produced hydrogen being shipped through Western Port”. Mr Burgess’s opposition to the plant being located at Hastings or anywhere in Western Port contrasts with that of his federal Liberal colleague, Mr Hunt. Mr Burgess said the Coalition “supports the exploration of uses for our valuable brown coal deposits and although there is a lot of work to be done to make it viable, its conversion to hydrogen is one of those potential uses”. “However, the Coalition was clear while in government and has confirmed in opposition, that Western Port is the location of Victoria’s second container port and that it would not be used for any of the toxic purposes the Labor Party had previously earmarked it for, including coal, urea and bitumen. “Western Port is not the appropriate place to ship coal to, whether via long coal trains, slurry pipe or any other means, or to develop a huge gasification plant for turning that coal into hydrogen.” It is understood Kawasaki is already building a ship to transport liquid hydrogen which would initially be produced at a pilot plant in the Latrobe Valley.

If proved viable, a much larger plant would be built at Hastings. Environmentalists argue that the process adds to Australia’s carbon emissions while Japan gets the benefit of a much cleaner fuel. Many of Mr Burgess’s concerns are echoed by Jenny Warfe, of the Blue Wedges environmental action group. “A pilot project is expected to start in 2020. Under the plan hydrogen will be produced from brown coal from the Latrobe Valley, so it’s odds on that Hastings would be the unlucky recipient of this project,” Ms Warfe said. “Although representatives from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and Japan’s transport ministry signed an agreement in Canberra, the public has been kept well in the dark about the ‘initiative’. As far as I can ascertain, there has been no public consultation about Hastings and Western Port being the unlucky recipient of an industry - or at the very least the likely shipping hub - for a fuel responsible for some of the most horrendous incidents on the planet and loss of human life. Are we mad?” Ms Warfe described brown coal as “the dirtiest coal on the planet”. “Our local community will bear the brunt of the climate and human health damaging emissions, while Japan enjoys the clean hydrogen fuel. “Although the pilot project is said to have the production plant in the Latrobe Valley, hydrogen would be trucked to Western Port, and this would mean hundreds of extra trucks a day … on roads that are already groaning under the pressures of rampant population growth. “Many of my colleagues are deeply concerned about this issue and I have no doubt that, were the public appraised of the proposal, there would be massive opposition.” The state government - while awaiting recommendations from Infrastructure Victoria on where Victoria’s next container port should be located – has previously stated the Port of Hastings should increasingly be used as a “bulk port”. Previous Labor government’s promoted Western Port as the preferred site for a container port, but the Andrews government indicated its favoured option as being at the so-called Bay West, in Port Phillip north of Geelong.

Book’s got the look FORGET about stocking your pantry with exotic ingredients and trying to cook complicated recipes that you can’t even pronounce - Frankston foodie Jade O’Donahoo says “simple” is back in fashion. The former cafe owner has just released a selfillustrated cookbook of vegetarian recipes that hark back to her Italian heritage and her love of “uncomplicated” food. She said the book – Eat This, My Friend – published by Hardie Grant Books, was inspired by the customer requests she received for her recipes after she closed her popular hole-in-the-wall cafe, Switchboard, in Melbourne a few years ago. “I got so many people saying they missed the food and asking for the recipes that I started writing them down, they were all just there in my head and then one thing led to another,” she said. As the project grew and more recipes were included, O’Donahoo said she recognised she had hit on something special. “Then I was encouraged to send it to a publisher so I did the illustrations and included some little stories, and in the end, I had a book.” O’Donahoo said she wanted to stick to recipes that didn’t require people to “hunt down’ tricky ingredients. “The book is all about making healthy food accessible to everybody, so I’ve stripped it back to ‘less is more’.” And that’s a philosophy that has worked to make Eat This, My Friend visually appealing, right down to the many simple but colourful illustrations. Despite several knockbacks from publishers, the single mother and child development worker persevered until a publisher decided to take a bite and commission the book’s publication. “It’s all very exciting, there might even be more to come,” O’Donahoo said. See eatthismyfriend.com for details. Liz Bell

Travel troubles accompany Hunt’s health job Liz Bell liz@mpnews.com.au FLINDERS MP Greg Hunt managed to avoid directly answering questions on the future of Medicare during a visit to Frankston Hospital last Wednesday when speaking to the media over his appointment as Australia’s new health minister. Mr Hunt’s promotion follows Sussan Ley’s resignation and an expenses scandal that now threatens to tarnish his own reputation, after it was revealed last week that between January 2014 and June 2016, the Mt Martha-based MP charged taxpayers $15,500 for overnight stays in Melbourne. In addition, he has spent more than $20,000 for travel to Queensland for him and his family over the past 15 years. Media adviser for Mr Hunt, Samantha Robin, said it was important for ministers to meet with key stakeholders across the country to ensure that the government “can deliver positive outcomes for our community”. Of his Queensland travel, she said all of Mr Hunt’s trips to Hayman Island were to attend the annual ADC Forum for speaking engagements, panel events and meetings, while the other six trips over Mr Hunt’s 15 years in parliament “span his time as a parliamentary secretary and shadow minister”. “On each occasion Mr Hunt was based in a single location and used this as a base for multiple electorate or portfolio visits, events or meetings over a number of days,” she said. Ms Robin said Mr Hunt had con-

ducted several meetings in Queensland with environment groups on Noosa being listed by UNESCO as a biosphere. He has also taken a strong interest in South East Queensland Water Catchment Authority program for supporting improved water quality and revegetation programs, and he had visited a number of sewerage treatment plants in the region. She said accommodation was claimed for dates on which Mr Hunt had formal portfolio duties. Although he managed to avoid being drawn into the Medicare freeze debate while at Frankston Hospital, Mr Hunt said he had a vision to give Australians “the best health care system” in the world, and that Medicare was the “fundamental underpinning”

of the health system. “You can understand I haven’t been sworn in yet,” he said. “I wanted to set the vision today to talk with the representatives of so many sectors within the health space and as I say I have already had many calls so far.” When quizzed further, he said he would “listen” and “learn” by talking to health professionals across different areas over the coming weeks. Citing his family’s involvement with Frankston Hospital and his late mother’s battle with mental health, Mr Hunt said health touched “every Australian” and he felt privileged to be the country’s new health minister. He also praised the appointment of Aged Care and Indigenous Health

Minister Ken Wyatt as the first Indigenous Australian sworn in as a minster, and said he wanted mental health and Indigenous health to be “a critical part” of his new role. Before visiting hospital wards, Mr Hunt acknowledged the role of Australia’s health care workers, as well as the volunteers “here today at Peninsula Health”. He thanked Peninsula Health CEO Sue Williams, and Dunkley MP Chris Crewther, for their work in securing a four-year funding deal for the expansion of MRI services on the peninsula. Mr Hunt, who was officially sworn in on Tuesday, also takes up Ms Ley’s old sports portfolio, while NSW senator Arthur Sinodinos takes over Mr Hunt’s former role as industry minister.

SES calls out for volunteers HASTINGS State Emergency Service is on the look-out for new members, especially residents in Somerville, Tyabb, Hastings, Mornington, Mt Martha, Moorooduc, Bittern, Cribb Point, Tuerong, Merricks, Balnarring and Somers. A recruitment information evening is being held 7pm, Wednesday 1 February, at the Hastings Unit, 2144 Frankston-Flinders Rd, Hastings. The SES handles floods, storms, earthquakes, landslides and tsunami emergencies state-wide. Public Relations section leader Helen Pugh said volunteers would receive accredited, recognised training, which may include rescue skills, chainsaw operations or securing a roof in a storm. SES units also assist other emergency agencies at incidents, such as searches and rescues. As well as emergency response, SES volunteers engage with the community to help them prepare for disasters. “Volunteering is a rewarding way of helping the community,” Ms Pugh said. “The SES is a great place to meet new and exciting people and the unit always welcomes newcomers. “I joined as a way of giving something back to the local community. “I would encourage everyone to join and lend a hand. There are roles for everyone, from working the chainsaw to communications and even public education.” Evening training sessions are 7 o’clock Mondays. Fire in garden A WOMAN awoke to find a bush in the front garden of her Somerville unit on fire, 3.15am, Friday 20 January. The 51-year-old victim said she saw a man leaving the scene and ran outside to extinguish the fire with a bucket of water. Frankston police and the CFA attended the

incident at the Kinlora Drive property. Inquiries are continuing. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.

Island blaze A FIRE at 20 hectare Sandstone Island, about a kilometre south-east of Hastings, 1am, Friday 20 January, has investigators puzzled. Firefighting aircraft were not able to fly to the island, which is adjacent to Jacks Beach, because of bad weather, and Volunteer Marine Rescue and Coast Guard vessels could not land because the tide was too low. Observers on the mainland said the hayshed had been engulfed and hay baling equipment destroyed. It is not known how the fire started but a sudden rain shower an hour later appeared to have put it out by 2.30am.

Guide to help homeless A NEW Mornington Peninsula Housing Services Guide aims to help people overcome housing-related problems. It can assist them to identify where to go for advice about particular problems and seeks to simplify what may appear to be a complex and confusing system. The peninsula guide has been released at a time when “rough” campers in the Melbourne CBD are ruffling official feathers. Melbourne lord mayor Robert Doyle is said to be about to propose a controversial bylaw outlawing sleeping in the city’s streets.

The peninsula guide contains a comprehensive list of contacts for legal advice/advocacy, financial assistance and information about public/ community housing and rooming houses. It offers those who are homeless, or who have a housing problem linked with other issues, such as mental health, or who are at risk of domestic violence, help in connecting to the most appropriate service. The guide complements the role of Salvo Care Eastern, Rosebud, which is the peninsula’s principal homelessness and housing agency, as well as many other services offering a range

of support and information. Mornington Peninsula mayor Cr Bev Colomb said the shire recognised the importance of secure and affordable housing. “[It] is becoming less affordable for many members of the community and the problem is so large that we need to look for solutions to assist a growing number of people.” The guide is available at all shire offices and community support and information centres. For online copies visit mornpen.vic.gov.au/helpguides For broader housing policy and research issues visit mornpen.vic.gov. au/housing or call 5950 1099.

Paramedic claims roster ‘blend’ cuts service Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au A PARAMEDIC fears changes to the roster will leave Rosebud residents without a vital ambulance service during busy nightshifts. The man, who asked not to be named but whose identity is known to The News, said the Rosebud and Rye joint ambulance branch had applied for and received approval to reduce its services in what he termed a “blended” roster. He said it would only take one interhospital transport (“of which there are many”) for the Rosebud night shift to be taken out of the area for several hours – depleting Rosebud of its only

local resource. “While it could be claimed that there will be no net loss of truck hours there will be only one night shift resource from 1am to 6.30am instead of two,” the paramedic said. “That’s a 50 per cent reduction in night coverage.” The claims have been refuted by Ambulance Victoria regional director Cath Anderson: “The Rye ambulance and the Rosebud ambulance are 24hour resources based at the Rosebud ambulance branch. We have no current plans to change the rostering of these two resources.” The paramedic said staff may claim that, statistically, the branch workload “quietens down” at 1am. “I can assure you that this is not the case,” he said. “Three hour minimum

inter-hospital transports to Frankston are still occurring at all hours – frequently. “Also, the Rye truck was government funded to provide 24-hour coverage. It will now only work daylight hours. Rosebud residents are being ripped off.” The paramedic said ambulance management would try to sell what he termed a roster change as a “trial” aimed at managing staff fatigue. “This may be true, but it should not be at the expense of the health of the peninsula. “It may also increase the fatigue of neighbouring stations, and decrease their availability for their own areas, while covering the Rosebud area workload.”

Heat blast: The aftermath of a fire possibly caused by overheated air conditioner.

Fire warning for coolers Liz Bell liz@mpnews.com.au FRANKSTON and Mornington Peninsula fire officers have issued a warning to have air cooling and heating systems serviced after two house fires over the weekend of 7 until 8 January. The fires in Seaford and Carrum Downs were among five in outer metro-Melbourne that fire crews believe were related to air-conditioners or evaporative cooling system. The families were home at the time of the fires and were able to escape, but both the houses were damaged. Carrum Downs station captain Steve Rhodes said investigations were continuing, but air cooling systems were likely to be the cause in both instances. CFA state fire investigation coordinator Nicole Harvey said all air conditioners and evaporative cooling units should be serviced annually to help prevent problems that could cause an electrical fault or fire. “People should maintain their air conditioners and evaporative coolers by ensuring the dust filters and vent outlets inside the properties are cleaned regularly, along with having

the units regularly serviced according to the manufacturer’s specifications,” Ms Harvey said. “Recent hot weather across Victoria means more people are cooling their homes with systems like evaporative coolers and these incidents may have been prevented had units been checked more regularly.” Mornington CFA captain Gary Bryant said heating units should be serviced at least annually to prevent a build u of dust and dirt, which can cause problems. Ms Harvey said people should also check the latest product safety recalls online. Victoria’s director of energy safety Paul Fearon said not many people took the time to get their units serviced each year. “Regular maintenance not only allows manufacturer’s upgrades and adjustments to be made, it ensures your air conditioner or evaporative cooler will be working safely and efficiently when you need it most,” he said. See productsafety.gov.au/recalls to check evaporative cooling model safety.

Fisheries Victoria’s acting executive director Dallas D’Silva said the population of yellowtail kingfish had “rebounded strongly” since 2010 and some were being electronically tagged as part of a two-year study. “The research aims to determine whether kingfish caught in Victorian waters are from one stock or several, and to better define population characteristics like age, growth and spawning habits,” Mr D’Silva said. “Yellowtail kingfish populations have rebounded strongly since 2010 and they are now regularly caught at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay and inshore waters right along the coast. “Our understanding of yellowtail kingfish stock structure is limited for this re-emerging fishery, which is why we are undertaking a two year study funded by recreational fishing licence fees. “For comparison, genetic material has been collected from yellowtail kingfish specimens in New South Wales, Tasmania and Victoria.” Mr D’Silva said the electronic tag would enable scientists to better understand the movement patterns of yellowtail kingfish “and how their travels correlate to water depth and temperature”. He said anglers had given 300 yel-

lowtail kingfish frames to Queenscliff-based project leader Dr Corey Green. Mr D’Silva said yellowtail kingfish have a minimum size of 60cm and a daily bag limit of five per angler. “A bag limit of one exists for mako sharks and threshers although some anglers choose to release them to help sustain wild populations. “Many of these anglers fish responsibly by using circle hooks that reduce deep hooking and improve shark survival after release. “Heavy line to reduce fight time and a prompt release is another common strategy that contributes to healthy game fisheries offshore.” For more information about fishing rules visit www.vic.gov.au/fishingguide or download the free Vic Fishing app for smartphones. DISADVANTAGED people across the Mornington Peninsula will benefit from the Great Peninsula Paddle on Australia Day. Organisers are hoping to raise $15,000 from the event, which is in line with money raised in years past. The seven-year-old event attracts more than 100 participants to Sorrento foreshore each January to raise money for Reclink Australia’s sport, recrea-

tion and arts programs. The not-for-profit group is being supported by the Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club, with money raised going towards the Western Port Warriors football team and other Reclink sport and recreation activities. “With the support of the Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club, Reclink Australia will be paddling for a good cause and raising money for the local

community,” Reclink Australia CEO John Ballis said. “We have created a special fundraising event that will target specific areas of the peninsula that have the greatest need.” The Great Peninsula Paddle is open to ocean kayaks, double kayaks, canoes, outriggers, surf skis, standup paddle boards, couta boats and dinghies. Anger over steps to ‘save’ beach Liz Bell liz@mpnews.com.au A STONE wall erected to stop erosion at Mt Martha has angered residents, who claim the “cost-cutting” measures had denied them rightful access to the beach. Rocks were placed in front of a bluestone wall on the 600 metre-long Hawker beach and neighbouring Craigie beach late last year, amid concern the narrow strip of sand was disappearing and the cliffs were at risk. But regular beachgoer Trevor Leslie claims the works, initiated by the Department of Water, Environment, Land and Planning (DWELP), had effectively cut the beach off from recreational users. “We are distraught at the loss of access to the beach and can’t believe there was no consultation,” he said. “All they had to do was keep the ramps there and put in some groynes; it would have been a better solution because lots of recreational beach goers used those ramps. “We are supposed to be saving beaches, not destroying them.” The rock revetment works were designed to protect a stone wall erected 50 years ago to prevent cliff erosion. Ted Stammers told The News that other measures should have been considered, and residents wanting to get to the beach now had to negotiate an “unsafe” and steep three-metre slope from a track behind the wall onto the sand.

“How hard or expensive would it have been to put a hand rail on the slope, if not steps; maybe, the shire would rather spend its money on damages costs for broken legs,” he said. “We want our beach back”. Another resident, Lauren Hillman, said she was also annoyed at the lack of community consultation. “Now we have a great mess of uncomfortable and unstable rocks with no thought given to the locals who have used this small patch of sand for years and years,” she said. “It would have been nice to have been consulted, not only this time but at others times, years ago when they came and destroyed the ramps that gave us more access to the beach and helped keep the sand in place. “My family and I are deeply upset at the loss of Hawker beach and the destroying of our community asset.” DELWP program manager John Downs said the rock revetment was necessary to protect the cliff faces from powerful waves which can “compromise” the road, walking trails and assets above. He said sections of the beach north and south of the seawall were accessible, but that access stairs that led to a small strip of sand adjacent to the seawall, exposed only at low tide, were damaged by storms and in danger of collapse. “Reinstating stair access would have led the public directly into water rather than onto sand, creating a public safety risk,” Mr Downs said.

Peninsula not just another suburb of Melbourne It is disheartening to see Mornington Peninsula Shire Council again put visitors before residents. Each summer the population triples and council turns a blind eye to the mess left behind by visitors and the total disregard for the pristine environment we as residents choose to live in 365 days a year. Each summer the population triples and council turns a blind eye to the mess left behind by visitors and the total disregard for the pristine environment where we residents live all year. The council knows that there will be an increase in rubbish but fails to increase the number of bins to avoid rubbish being left by people too lazy to take it with them. Council also continues to turn a blind eye to illegal parking which sometimes has left residents being blocked in their own streets. I moved to the peninsula from because of what it was able to offer in the way of lifestyle and environment without the hectic big city chaos. However, the council seems to be giving in to larger and larger developments which are taking away from the character and conservation of the area. Melbourne visitors to the peninsula over summer should understand and accept it is not another Melbourne suburb. There are no large shopping centres or high rise apartments and they should not expect it to change to accommodate their greed. Council allowing more development and fewer green areas to suit the summer visitors is simply turning the peninsula into another crowded, noisy, uninviting Melbourne suburb which can only result in losing its appeal as a wonderful relaxing holiday destination. The council needs to listen to the residents and stop looking to simply appease developers and

summer visitors. Council will not provide for improved roads which currently cannot handle the traffic numbers now, let alone any increase in numbers from more large housing developments. I fail to understand how a council can make decisions without being transparent with the residents who support the local area every day. Nadia Wilson, Safety Beach

Fast tracking land In reply to your article “Groups lining up to stop land sales” (The News 17/1/17) regarding the fast track amendment to rezone the Melbourne Water land in Rosebud from public use to residential zone 1A, I would like to verify facts and timelines. In August 2016, the land was offered to Mornington Peninsula Shire without a costing as Melbourne Water would not provide a valuation unless the offer was accepted. It was zoned public use 1 and not worth much. Melbourne Water stated that if the shire purchased the land for community use, the valuation would be discounted by 30 per cent provided the land could not be sold at a later date or have a different zoning. This was a unique opportunity for the shire to provide a public passive recreation area in a rapidly expanding area. Council officers did not consider the site wide enough for a soccer ground or any other large sporting use and advised Melbourne Water that the shire would not be acquiring any of the land. These officers did not consult members of the surrounding community who have been using this land as a public passive recreation area and who vehemently wish it to remain so. A community information session was conducted by Melbourne Water on Wednesday 16

November 2016 at Dromana. This item was voted on at the public council meeting held in Somerville on Monday 28 November 2016. Submissions to the government’s land standing advisory committee had a closing date of 9 December 2016 and in February the committee will hold a public hearing in Melbourne and report to the minister. Why is the state government immune from the standard planning process? Our association has made a submission and is advising residents on courses of action. Doris Campbell, president Mornington Peninsula Ratepayers and Residents Association

Move motorists I say it is the cars that are the problem on the Esplanade in summer, not cyclists (“Bikes a problem” Letters 17/1/17). We cyclists pay the same rates and taxes so we should have the same rights to the roads. Why should we be pushed to alternative routes? How about [the letter’s author] John Tingiri go an alternative route and lessen the risk to us, this will eliminate the “unnecessary risks” that he speaks of. David Howard, Mt Martha

Ban the bikes I would like to give support to John Tingiri (“Bikes a problem” Letters 17/1/17) and his concerns regarding the dangerous implications of bikes using the Esplanade, particularly between Mt Martha and Safety Beach. As a recently retired professional hire car driver of over 10 years, I am convinced that the only solution to avoid the ultimate tragedy of a death, is to ban push bikes from this section of road. Unfortunately, I was required to avoid colliding with oncoming traffic, risking the safety of myself and passengers, because oncoming vehicles were over the double lines in an effort to pass bikes. This happened repeatedly, more so in the past few years. As a car driver you must break the law if you have to pass a bike, because the road is not wide enough to allow the legal passing without

traversing the centre double lines. Rob Boundy, Mt Martha

Planning reform I would like to add my 50 cents worth to the concerns of Doris Campbell and Brian Stahl about the planning decision making of our council officers (“Planning for planning decisions is a good idea”, “Support for committee” Letters 17/1/17). I commend David Gill our new Red Hill ward councillor on trying to get some transparency into the council’s planning decisions. The only chance of informed decision making by councillors on planning issues would be to re-establish some sort of planning committee. If the shire’s CEO is scared of councillors getting timely and detailed information on planning matters, maybe he should look for a job somewhere back in private employment, where his approach would be unquestioned and probably welcome. Rupert Steiner, Balnarring Beach

Computer rage Remember how free and easy life was before the advent of the computer, internet, Facebook and the appropriately named Twitter? You could post a letter and no one else knew its contents. Now people feel the need to tell all their so-called friends on the not so social media about their daily routine. Some people feel the need to take a photo of what they are about to eat and send it out there? Let them try that with the box Brownie. How many times have you walked into a crowded room and it’s dead silent because everyone is engaged with the dreaded “smart phone”? Hackers are smarter than the average bear and can relieve you of your savings so fast it would make your head spin. Social media has given birth to new breed of anonymous people, they’re called trolls, and obviously suffer from a liver complaint, going by the bile that gets put out there. The odd poison pen letter was all you got in the old system if someone didn’t like you. Continued Page 14

Market momentum ‘test’ THE auction of two freestanding commercial buildings at 157-163 Ocean Beach Rd, Sorrento, is expected to confirm the strength of the peninsula’s property market. CBRE’s Mark Wizel said the 554 square metre block, to be auctioned 12.30pm, Saturday 11 March, was expected to attract strong interest given its passing income, flexibility and position adjoining a council car park. He said the site offered an opportunity for a mixed use development “in one of Victoria’s strongest performing markets”. He described 2016 as a “hugely successful year” for the Mornington Peninsula’s property market with “this momentum” expected to continue into 2017. Mr Wizel referred to the sale last year of the Mitre 10 Hardware store at 80-90 Ocean Beach

Rd for $11.465 million – reflecting a record price of nearly $4500 a square metre. The property was bought by a “prominent Melbourne based investor” for future development. CBRE’s Sandro Peluso said Sorrento had emerged as one of the state’s strongest housing markets in recent years. “House prices in Sorrento have grown by 17.43 per cent in the past three years, underlining investor confidence in the stability and growth potential of the suburb.” Referring to the sale of the two commercial sites at 157-163 Ocean Beach Rd, he said: “Opportunities on this stretch of road don’t come up regularly, especially with such outstanding street corner exposure, development potential and short term income security.” The two businesses on the site, both on short-term leases, generate rental income of $105,105 a year.

Mr Hunt received 51.6 per cent of the primary vote to Ms Gleixner’s 27 per cent. After distribution of preferences Mr Hunt held the seat with 57.77 per cent of the vote to Ms Gleixner’s 42.23 per cent.

Travel test

Interaction lost

According to “The Project” on TV and other news sources, federal MP for Flinders Greg Hunt spent $20,000 on “family trips” to the Gold Coast. If this is true, it is not a good look, especially while so many people on the Mornington Peninsula of all ages from the elderly to young people and families are placed under unfair stress by inaccurate Centrelink debt repayment demands. Any other working person would have difficulty convincing the Australian Tax Office that family trips were a legitimate work related expense – especially when the Gold Coast is nowhere near Canberra and the Australian federal parliament. During the Whitlam years the [Labor] federal government cut costs by getting MPs to travel economy class. This provoked an outrage among the MPs in Cabinet, to which Gough Whitlam famously said: ”I fly economy and I am a great man and I could fly economy for the rest of my life and I would still be a great man. But most of the people around this table are pissants and they could fly

Your article on the State of the Bays Report, released by Victoria’s Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability, misleadingly states it to be a “wake up call” (“Bays health report a wake up call” The News 20/12/16). None of the report’s data is alarming to me and now, the overall management of Port Phillip is very good. The article’s claim that “the report studied” various environmental parameters is incorrect. The report is a compendium of assessments prepared by external, knowledgeable specialists. For post-industrial Melbourne, the key factor determining water quality, productivity of marine food chains and the quality of most of marine habitats is the nitrogen that gets into the water each year. In 1991, the Cain government initiated the Port Phillip Bay Environmental Study. The $12 million investigation remains the largest and most detailed study of any estuary in the Southern Hemisphere. At this time the annual nitrogen load was about 2300 tonnes. Now the nitrogen load entering the bay is about 1200 tonnes a year.

The machines are taking over: “The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power, pure power,” 1984 [by George Orwell]. I admit I am an old reactive who likes talking to people, not machines (or recorded messages). It is pleasant to be able to get to know and interact with the people in the local stores, checkouts (you can keep the checkout machines) and petrol station. As an avid reader I enjoy using the mobile library van to have a chat, discuss books, get help, so I rarely go to the main Rosebud library. I had noticed with horror that the nice staff were disappearing and I had to cope with a machine, swipe my card then try and work out which button to select. However, recently I went in and fronted up to the copier - wow - where to put the money in? After help from other users I found I had to scan my library card on one machine to put

Deep omission

The study also determined that if nitrogen ever exceeded about 5000 tonnes, the bay would be completely taken over by algal bloom slime. Curiously, the report makes no mention of the major changes occurring with the hydrology of the bay. They are a direct consequence of “channel deepening”, recklessly commissioned by the Brumby government. These hydrological effects are most dynamic between Point Nepean and Dromana and, with predicted sea level rise, they will become more and more evident. Oops! It would appear that the Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability and [the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change] Lily D’Ambrosia hope that this problem will simply go away. No compulsion Maureen Federico should note that Assisted Dying Legislation is not compulsory (“Change through stealth” Letters 22/12/16) Several years ago I watched my father-in-law die a horrible death from asbestosis, feeling frustrated, ashamed that we “humans” don’t do what we do for sick, dying animals. This proud man died without dignity, in pain, gasping for every breath. The “respectful relationships and safe school programs” currently being taught in our schools should be commended for giving students a forum to understand current social issues confronting our young people. As with other social progressive issues, such as abortion, same sex marriage, they are not compulsory. I urge Victorian MPs to pass the Assisted Dying Legislation in 2017. Denise Hassett, Mt Martha

Fair Work helps out A FORMER Seaford automotive repair business manager has been reimbursed $102,990 following intervention by the Fair Work Ombudsman. The manager was found to have not received his correct annual and long service leave entitlements after resigning after 25 years. He contacted the Fair Work Ombudsman for help and to confirm that he was entitled to the payment. He was provided with advice to help him resolve the matter with his former employer. The entitlement was paid in two lump sum payments within a week. The Fair Work Ombudsman also helped a foreman in Carrum Downs to recover $5623 in entitlements. The woman sought help after not receiving her final pay and annual leave entitlements when she resigned from the business, despite having given the correct notice. Acting Fair Work Ombudsman Michael Campbell said the employers in the two instances avoided enforcement action “because they co-operated and voluntarily rectified the underpayments after being made aware of their obligations”. “The underpayments in these instances were inadvertent and were the result of employers failing to check their obligations under workplace laws,” Mr Campbell said. See fairwork.gov.au or call 13 13 94 for assistance.

IT’S TIME TO GET OUT AND DANCE

Caller and leader of the Mornington Peninsula Square Dancers, Jaden Frigo, says the square dancing groups have been unbelievably well received on the peninsula. “I’ve been blown away by the enthusiastic response to our new groups. It’s been so successful that we have added three more groups so you can now dance in Rosebud, Mornington, Hastings, Balnarring or Somerville. There are thousands of people on the peninsula that would love it if they gave it a try and I really do encourage everyone to come along and see why the activity is taking the world by storm,” he said.

You are encouraged to be there from the first week of February so you don’t miss anything but if you can’t make it until later in the month then don’t worry - you’ll be just as welcome. SMARTER BOLDER FASTER

100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...

Meetings to be held for next recruiting campaign Compiled by Cameron McCullough IT will be seen by an advertisement in another column that definite arrangements have now been made to hold meetings in the three centres of the Shire, to promote the success of the new Recruiting Campaign. That for Somerville will be held tonight (Saturday) at 8.30pm, for Frankston, on Tuesday next at the Mechanics’ Hall, at 8 p.m., and the third will be held at the Hall, Hastings, at 8 sharp, on Saturday, February 3rd. It is particularly requested that the audience should assemble promptly at 8pm, at the Hastings meeting, as the Hall is required for another purpose afterwards on the same evening. Each meeting will be addressed by eminent speakers, and at each a local committee, representing all shades of thought, will be formed, with an executive. We may be allowed to express a hope that every adult in the Shire, whether man or woman, who desires to see a victorious and speedy termination of the war, will endeavour to attend one or other of the meetings. *** REV E. Tonkin will conduct both services at Frankston Methodist Church on Sunday next, 11am and 8pm. Mrs G. Neilson will render a solo. *** AS per advertisment appearing elsewhere Brody and Mason will sell on 8th proximo at “Sunnyside” on account Mrs A. S. Panter contents of 10 roomed villa residence. Brody and Mason will hold their

first bi-weekly sale this month on Wednesday next the 31st instant, when a good yarding is expected and a large gathering of buyers have promised to attend at Somerville. *** THE First Troop of Frankston Boy Scouts are the proud possessors of a beautiful Union Jack which was recently presented to them by Mr C. Chandler, of Frankston. The boys are justly proud of the flag which measures 6ft. by 3ft. and desire to gratefully acknowledge Mr Chandler’s gift. *** MESSRS T. R. B. Morton and Son have received instructions from Dr Woinraski to offer for sale on the premises at 3 o’clock on Monday next, his charming and commodious residence ‘Rockcliffe” situated on the Esplanade, at Mornington. The terms are easy, being one third cash balance in 1, 2, and 3 years being 5½ per cent interest. The same firm will sell on the following day (Tuesday) at their rooms 72 Swanston St Melbourne at 3 o’clock by order of the Union Trustees Co, of Australia in order to wind up the estate of A. T. McKurdy, deceased, the well known property “Cumbrae” situated at Tyabb, containing 223 acres, 3 miles from railway station and cool stores. *** A CASE which promised extensive litigation at the Frankston Court, on the 8th instant Millar v Forster, and put off to the Hastings Court on the 23rd was withdrawn.

Briefly the circumstances arose through purchase under contract of certain implements and nursery stocks with the freehold. The defendant Forster subsequently refusing to pay the bills given under his contract owing to alleged misrepresentations of the goods. The matter was amicably settled before the court sat by the plaintiff accepting the return of the goods and returning the bills to the defendant, and we understand the articles are to be sold on Wednesday next at the Somerville market, on account of Miller, the plaintiff. *** A PARTY of nurses visited Frankston on Tuesday evening last, and were entertained by the “Wattle” Club, in the Hall, where a large party had gathered to pay homage to the nurses, some of whom had returned from the front, and others who are leaving sunny Australia very soon to face dangers unknown. The best we can give is not too good for the women who are playing such a part in the great war and whose lives are devoted to such a noble cause. Although all preparations had to be carried out at very short notice, word being received Monday night that they were coming, everything was in order and a splendid dinner of cold poultry, ham, etc., was in readiness on the arrival of the cars. After doing justice to the good things so generously provided, the nurses were entertained with songs recitations, brass instrument selec-

tions, violin obligato, whistling and clog dancing, banjo selection and first class performances on the piano, things going merrily till midnight. The Club members are deeply grateful to all who so willingly and ably provided items and aided in every way possible, to make the evening pass pleasantly. No doubt they would be amply repaid by the delight expressed by the nurses and the genuine applause which greeted each item. Mr Robinson, who accompanied the party, spoke in complimentary terms of the “Wattle” Club, Dr Maxwell responding in a few words. Mr Bailey was in charge of the programme and Mr Lidgerwood acted as M.C. for the dances. *** SOMERVILLE NEWS: Word was received last week that Pte H Overton was wounded whilst fighting the Turks in the desert. We hope that his wounds are lot serious. A dance was held here in the Mechanics’ Institute last Saturday night and there was a very good attendance. The music was provided by Miss F. Unthank and Mr Archie Meldrum capably filled the duties of M.C. names were also played during the evening. Mrs Geo Shepherd is out of the hospital now and we are pleased to say that she is progressing favorably. We shall all be pleared to have her back with us again. Fruit picking is in full swing. Apricots, plums, and other stone fruit are of a nice large size, but there is a

scarcity of all varieties of fruit. *** From the Front! The following was received by Mrs C. Tait of Frankston, from one of our local soldiers, Private George Patterson, who is fighting “Somewhere in France.” Do you wonder what I am doing Thro’ the long and empty days? If I linger as we used to, in the old familiar ways ? Do you ask me, now we’ve parted, if my thoughts are light and free ? Or if ever they are turning to the lands beyond the sea ? I’m thinking and dreaming of someone; Someone that’s far away, I’m watching and waiting for someone, when I’ll come back someday; I know there is someone who wants me, someone whose heart is true, And that’s why I’m waiting for someone, dear friend for you. Yes I think of the dear old places and the ways we used to know. And I watch the changing seasons and the stars that come and go. But it’s lonely friend without you and the hours are fraught with pain, For I’m longing, Oh ! I’m longing just to see you all again. My thoughts go out today, and every day, To one so dear to me who’s far away. Never forgotten ah! Who could forget? Dear since we parted you are dearer yet. *** From the pages of the Mornington Standard, 27 January 1917.

Mister Maker is a master of his craft By Cameron McCullough IT’S 2.45am in England when I get put through to Phil Gallagher. He is wide awake, and doing press interviews with Australian media while most of his fellow countrymen and women sleep. “Actually, it is great to be sitting on my own sofa,” said Phil. “Last year, I was only home for a total of two months. I was on the road nearly the entire year!” It is no surprise. Phil Gallagher is a super-star. Or, more accurately, Mister Masker, his alter-ego is. “I absolutely love this job,” said Phil. “I miss my family and friends with all the travel, but wouldn’t trade it for anything!” And wow, is he popular! Mention the name Mister Maker around any kids and watch the excitement in their eyes. Children of all ages love to watch what the crafty and colourful character from ABC Kids can make; especially in under a minute. Phil began his career as a journalist but always wanted to be a children’s TV entertainer. “I was sports reporting very early on, before my proper career started, and was very fortunate to get experience with my local BBC. I loved local sports and was able to report on the local footy. But it had always been my dream to work

PAGE 30

in kids TV,” said Phil. “I had an opportunity to work on the Disney Channel many years ago and that’s where it all started.” For Phil, growing up watching kids TV presenters gave him something to work towards. “I loved watching how they entertained the kids and that connection on a one-to-one basis. That’s what I do with Mister Maker, using arts and crafts and lots of fun to create a show that inspires people of all ages to get arty. Its comical and funny and the kids feel as if Mister Maker is one of their friends.” When asked what makes the show so popular, Phil laughs and says, “My hair of course.” Mister Maker is well known for his kooky hairstyle and his colourful vests, with the show commanding the attention of tens of thousands of viewers across the globe. Screened in over 100 countries, and dubbed in several different languages, Mister Maker’s crafty approach to children’s entertainment sees mini-makers transcend culture and age, with a fan base ranging from toddlers to adults. “The main reason for the show’s success is that it is about arts and crafts which are a universal thing, or at least being creative is something people from all walks of life can do. Mister Maker teaches simple art techniques and tries to inspire people

Western Port News 24 January 2017

to make something. It is making arts and crafts popular around the world.” Mister Maker is such a hit that Phil is oftern recognised when he goes out. “It is mainly parents who spot me and say ‘It’s Mister Maker’ to their kids. These days it’s quite funny as grownups will ask for a selfie with me. It’s always really lovely to meet people and I’m honoured that they watch and enjoy the show.” Mister Maker is travelling around Australia and will be paying a visit. He won’t be alone though. The Shapes will be there as a supporting cast. “It still sends tingles up my spine when the shapes come onto the stage for the first time during our shows. The kids absolutely love them! This craft-packed show is sure to be bundles of fun for the whole family, so mini-makers - book your tickets early; you don’t want to miss out. “We’ll have so much fun. There will be lots of craft, but also plenty of singing and dancing. Make sure you get along to see us. I can’t wait to see all of you!” said Gallagher. Mister Maker and The Shapes will be heading to Frankston Arts Centre for two shows on 27 January (11am and 1.30pm) For tickets go to: www.thefac.com. au or call 9784 1060.

Old Boys buck the trend PROVINCIAL By IT Gully PENINSULA Old Boys have once again bucked the MPCA Provincial trend in round eight and posted a strong score against Sorrento. On a day where the bowlers were on top in Provincial cricket on Saturday, POB posted a more than solid total of 8/277 to give Sorrento plenty to chase on day two of the match this weekend. The next highest score of the round was from Pines against Somerville. The Piners were bowled out for 186. The Old Boys once again had contributors throughout their card, starting with Wade Pelzer at the top of

the order with 87, Dylan O’Malley opened with 42, Eivion Bowen contributied 43 and Will Crowder hit 63. Tommy Feldgen also contributed 18 at the back end of the innings. The Sorras used seven bowlers throughout the afternoon, Rob Parslow the pick of them with 2/40 from 15 overs, while Leigh Poholke had a trundle for the third time this year for a return of 2/45 from 12 overs. Pines were cruising at 1/112 against Somerville before the wheels fell of and the visitors lost 9/74. Rhys Chalkley top scored for the Piners with 52 after opening the innings and Craig Entwhistle hit four fours and a six on his way to 44. Ash-

ley Hupe also opened with 27, Harley Parker got going for 24 and Harley Peace-Stirling made 22. Russell Wilkes was the star with the ball for the Eagles with 5/36 from 32 overs, including 18 maidens, while Matty Roach claimed 2/29 from 12. In reply, Somerville faced the last six overs of the day and lost Sean Parker for four after he was run-out by Pat Jackson. The Eagles will pick up this week on 1/15. Langwarrin were bowled out for 180 against Pearcedale in the Bushman’s Cup after skipper Travis Campbell held the innings together with a team-high 53. Matt Prosser was the next best with 23 and Taylor Smith hit 22.

Kaine Smith was the destroyer for the Panthers, bowling 27 overs for a return of nine maidens and six wickets for just 39 runs. Will Kennedy also had an impact for the visitors, claiming 2/72 from 22 overs. Pearcedale is 0/3 off three overs in reply. Mornington and Mt Eliza are evenly poised at Alexandra Park. The Mounties batted first and were bowled out for 166. Russell Fulton (57), Justin Grant (34) and Lyle House (33) were the key contributors to ensure that their side made it past 150 after being 7/127 at one stage. Matt Foon was at his devastating best for the Doggies with six wickets, while Rob O’Toole helped himself to

a couple of wickets. In reply, Mornington are 1/12 off nine overs with Rob Maskiell claiming a wicket for the Mounties. Baxter will be chasing 169 for victory after bowling out Moorooduc or 168 on Saturday. Baxter used eight bowlers throughout the afternoon against the Ducs, Sam Wolsgrove the best of them with 4/31 from 16 overs, while Chris Brittain picked up 3/30 from 14 and Chamika Sattambi snared 2/21 from 9.5 overs. Ben Williams was a shining light for Moorooduc at the top of the innings with 59 runs while Michael Whincup scored 26.

Bowlers dominate in District cricket

DISTRICT

By IT Gully THE day certainly belonged to the bowlers on the opening day of round eight in MPCA District cricket on Saturday. In the first two day game of the new year, Red Hill was the only team to make it past 200, scoring 201 against Heatherhill. The next highest team score was 165, hit by Baden Powell against Mt Martha. The lowest score of the round was 74 after Seaford were bowled out by Rye. The Demons are in a winning position at 5/111 in reply. The match at Seaford Reserve was the real story of the day with the home side already losing on first innings to the Demons.

Rye went into the game with zero wins for the 2016/17 season and four outright losses in just seven games. Boneo is also on zero points after losing seven from seven matches, none by outright. The team that finishes bottom will be relegated to Sub District next season and many predicted that it would come down to the final round of the season when Rye hosts Boneo in a one day game to determine who is booted. However, Rye is in a position to put some real pressure on the Pandas if they can go on and win this match against Seaford. Ryan McQueen was the top scorer for Seaford with 25 while Mathew Herbert hit 22. There were four ducks in Seaford’s card. Max Cairns was superb for the Demons with 6/34 from 13 overs while

Tom Baron snared 4/38 from 13 overs. In reply, the Demons are 5/111 after Andrew Hitchener top scored with 39. Tim Symons and Cooper Morks are the not out batsmen, both on 16. The scenario may stay the same of a final round showdown if Boneo can cause an upset over Delacombe Park. The Pandas rolled the Parkers for just 132 on Saturday and are just 120 runs away from victory in reply. Lachlan Yeoman top scored for Delacombe with 28 while Jon Guthrie hit 23. Chris Jobling and Daniel Wilson took three wickets each for Boneo. Stuey Peck is not out, along with Wilson and one thinks if Peck can turn back the clock and be there at the end, the Pandas will win the game. The will resume at 1/12. Shaun Foster is once again holding Main Ridge together after his side

collapsed trying to reach Flinders’ target of 127. Foster is unbeaten on 41 in the chase, his team to resume at 3/46. Earlier, the Ridge did extremely well with the ball, holding the Sharks to just 127 after Blake Hogan-Keogh again saved the day for the home side with 54. Luke Collins and Nick McNamara were the pick of the Main Ridge bowlers with 3/33 and 3/28 respectively. Sam Lyons picked up 2/18. Matt Burns was the man to get the job done with the ball for the Sharks, snaring all three of Main Ridges’ wickets in eight overs for just eight runs. Mt Martha is in a world of pain against Baden Powell. After restricting the Braves to 165, Mt Martha is struggling at 3/32 in re-

ply with Mitchel Darville, Riley Shaw and Kyle Bendle all back in the sheds. The Reds’ key bowlers did the job, Curtis Stone taking 4/35 and Rhys Whitling 3/40. Rosebud will need to bowl at their best to beat Seaford Tigers after being bowled out for 113. Brian Doughty top scored with 32 while Billy Quigley hit 26. In reply, the Tigers are 1/19. Red Hill is red hot favourite to beat Heatherhill. The Hillmen made 201 with Simon Dart again dominating with 62, while Andrew Mock made 34 and Glenn Collett a very timely 28. In reply, the Hills are 2/17 after Dart snared 2/6 from his opening four overs. The Hills faced the final 10 overs of the day.

Hastings Blues bats fail - again SUB-DISTRICT By IT Gully HASTINGS have once again failed with the bat, this time against Carrum in round eight of MPCA Sub District. The Blues’ bowlers have been able to get their team out of trouble for the most part this season and it appears that it is going to be the case again in this match. Hastings were bowled out for just 149 on Saturday against the Lions af-

ter cruising at 2/114 at one stage. Mitchell Floyd was superb at three with 41 runs, Robbie Hearn got started for 31 and AJ Wilson opened with 29 to give the Blues the ideal start. However, the middle order offered nothing and there was no wag in the tail, which saw the Blues lose 8/35. Brett Moulton was on fire for Carrum, taking 7/42 from 15 overs, including five maidens. Lachy Dobson helped himself to 2/30 from 11.2 overs.

The Blues’ bowlers were able to get their side back in the game, however, picking up 2/7 in the final 13 overs of the day. When Dromana bowled out Carrum Downs for just 135, they would have been very confident of picking up the all-important 12 points. However, wind the clock forward 18 overs and the Hoppers are in a world of pain at 7/35. David Dervan (3/22) and Michael Flahive (3/9) ripped through the visi-

tors’ batting line up to have them in all sorts. Earlier, Jye Voelkl ripped through the Cougars with 6/34 from 19 overs. Adam Mikkelsen top scored for Carrum Downs with 41 and Joel Williams hit 29. The match between Balnarring and Tootgarook should be a ripper after Brent Murdoch single handedly got his side to a winnable total of 217. The Saints batted first and the skipper Murdoch made 95, while Michael

Thompson with 39 and Glenn Newitt with 36 were the only other bats to offer any support. AJ King was the pick of the Frogs’ bowlers with 3/30 from 14 overs whole Matt Whelan claimed 2/39 from 19. The Frogs are 0/6 in reply. Ballam Park has its work cut out to get the 9/270 set by Tyabb. Stuart Plunkett was at his best with the ball for the Knights with 7/92 from 34 overs, however, he’ll need to score a ton with the bat for his side to win.

Pinheiro targets top three finish for Seaford SOCCER

By Craig MacKenzie IF there was a local coach of the year award for 2016 Seaford United supremo Paulo Pinheiro would be a valid candidate. Sure he may not have beaten Scott Morrison whose Rosebud Heart side won every game in a once-in-a-generation season and Adam Jamieson whose Mornington outfit created history with back-to-back State 1 championships but what Pinheiro achieved last year is worthy of recognition. When Darren Roberts surprisingly quit a couple of weeks out from the start of last season and half a dozen senior players followed suit assistant coach Pinheiro had suddenly inherited a basket case. Despair engulfed the club on and off the field and some already accepted that Seaford United would play in a lower division this year. That was far from Pinheiro’s mind. “I saw it as an opportunity to use what I had learned from a similar role at Skye United,” said Pinheiro. He set about instilling a positive culture at North Seaford Reserve, putting faith in players such as Dylan Waugh, who hadn’t seen much senior football and Mitch Lander, who was in one of the club’s Bayside League sides. Pinheiro also was boosted by the arrival of goalkeeper Anthony Madaferri, whom he had coached as a junior and successfully engineered the return of Paul Maguire from Sandringham. Amid the gloom and doom of relegation talk Pinheiro had a bet with a friend that he could guide the side to a top six finish. He lost the bet when Seaford finished seventh but he had unearthed regular goalscorers and transformed a group of early season easybeats into a

competitive outfit. After eight games Seaford United was second bottom with four points but by season’s end it had amassed 28 points and Waugh was one of the top three marksmen in the competition. Pinheiro is 42 years old and arrived in Melbourne from Portugal when he was 16 having played with Union Tomar in his native country. He played primarily in midfield and had two spells with Springvale City then played with Portuguese-backed Port United before a knee injury curtailed his career.

“My dad was a coach back in Portugal and I used to watch him thinking that this was too hard for me so to be honest I never ever thought that I would get involved with coaching,” said Pinheiro. “And now here I am as a senior coach with a B licence and doing a degree in sports coaching. Funny how things turn out.” Pinheiro is in his fourth year at Seaford and has high hopes for 2017. “I’ll be very happy with a top three finish. We only started back training last week but the positive culture is

Mornington Little Aths find new home By Ben Triandafillou THE Mornington Little Athletics Centre have completed their temporary move to the Mornington Secondary College whilst they await the construction of their new all-weather running track at Civic Reserve, Mornington. The MLAC hosted their first day of competition at their new home on January 14 after outgrowing their old location at Mace Oval, Mount Martha after 13 seasons. With the assistance of local companies such as Moorooduc Timber and Hardware and Charlton Degg, Land Development Consultants, the move to their new home was relatively smooth and without great cost to the club itself. Charlton Degg, located in Mount Eliza, provided a free line marking survey of the track at the MSC saving possibly thousands for the Little Ath’s. “I know it’s hard for them to always find funds, so I thought it wouldn’t be too big of an ask to donate our time to

help them out,” Charlton Degg’s director of surveying, Michael Degg said. Moorooduc Timber and Hardware also offered a helping hand donating sleepers for the shipping containers to rest on, free of charge. “They donated their time and expertise and we are very, very appreciative of their help,” said club Secretary, Lisa Henry. Although the conditions were overcast for the first home program at MSC, it didn’t stop the eager young athletes from participating in their events at their new 400m running track. The larger track provided much needed space for field events which the Mace Oval lacked. Now with a community of 284 junior athletes, the family-friendly MLAC are continually bringing on new members with their two week ‘Come and Try’ period, allowing youngsters to have a go and decide whether they enjoy it. The Little Ath’s runs most Saturday

mornings beginning at 8:45am for a warm-up and concluding usually around 12pm. The Mornington Secondary College have also been generous, allowing the MLAC to utilise various facilities, including the Cottage which is being used as their new clubrooms. “We’ve never had clubrooms, so it’s fantastic that they are letting us use it,” said Lisa Henry. The MLAC hosted the annual Peninsula Challenge last Saturday, an interclub meet against the Westernport and the Southern Peninsula Little Athletics Centre’s. Although a busy day, the junior athletes had a ball competing against the other local LAC’s, with an expected turnout of about 200 competitors. Awaiting confirmation, the MLAC are hopeful that their $2 million IAAF standard athletics track, being funded by the federal government, will be ready for use in October, 2018.

“I’m absolutely rapt” - Coach John Hynes INTERLEAGUE By Toe Punt MORNINGTON Peninsula Nepean Football League coach John Hynes said he was ‘absolutely wrapped’ with the 2017 Interleague campaign after it kicked-off last Friday. The MPNFL Sharks had 38 on the track on Friday night at Frankston Park while there were players who couldn’t train that attended to support the squad. Hynes said the “level, intensity and competitive aspects were as high as I have seen them”, despite it being the first hit-out of the season. The MPNFL will take-on Geelong FL at the MCG to claim the number one title in Victorian Football in May this year. The last time the leagues met was three years ago at Kardinia Park and

the MPNFL was thrashed. Hynes said our league was under prepared and lacked commitment the last time the leagues met and he was determined to ensure history didn’t repeat itself, especially on Australia’s biggest sporting stage. “We’re happy to go with the Sydney Swans mantra of a no commitment, no interest policy,” Hynes said. “We only want players who are committed to our cause and the early signs couldn’t be more pleasing.” With an influx of former AFL and VFL talent coming into the league this season, there is expectation that the squad will be stronger. “Luke Tapscott (Sorrento) is as keen as mustard and Trent Dennis-Lane (Bonbeach) is keen too while the likes of Brayden Irving (Seaford), Jordan Pollard (Tyabb) and Ben Hughes (Red

Hill) are all really looking forward to it. “Aaron Edwards (Pines) is again leading the charge with his high level of commitment and I’m hopeful after speaking with Andreijs Everitt (Somerville) that he will get right behind his league and support the boys. Unfortunately, Chris Dawes will be away and unavailable,” Hynes said. The initial squad, which can be added to at any time, looks like this: Beau Bailey (Bonbeach), Byron Barry (YCW), Anthony Barry (YCW) - VFL, Tim Bongetti (Pines), Mitch Bosward (Bombers), Brett Bowden (Edi-Asp), Anthony Bruhn (YCW) -VFL, Corey Buchan (Bombers), Jackson Calder (Mornington), Matt Clark (Edi-Asp), Matt Clifford (Hastings), Nick Corp (Sorrento), Beau Cosson (Dromana), Brenton Credlin (YCW)

– VFL, Trent Dennis-Lane (Bonbeach), Keegan Downie (Rosebud), Ash Eames (YCW), Aaron Edwards (Pines), Andreijs Everitt (Somerville), Ricky Ferraro (Hastings), Shaun Foster (Hastings), Sam Fox (Bombers), Todd Gardiner (Chelsea), Sam Gill (Mt Eliza), Dan Gormley (Mt Eliza), James Hallihan (Sorrento), Blake Harkness (Langwarrin), Alex Harnett (Bombers) – VFL, Rhys Healy (Pearcedale), Beau Hendry (Pines), Guy Hendry (Pines), Luke Hewitt (Hastings), Rowan Hogenbirk (Somerville), Ben Hughes (Red Hill), Kyle Hutchison (YCW), Brayden Irving (Seaford), Rikki Johnston (Dromana), Dylan Jones (Bonbeach), Ryan Kitchen (Bombers), Ben Landry (Mt Eliza), Jake Lovett (YCW) - VFL, Andrew Lovett (Sorrento), Kevin Lylak (YCW), Steve Mannix (Edi-Asp), Ryan Marks-Logan

A flying start for the Moloney Stables By Ben Triandafillou CAULFIELD trainer, John Moloney, has defied the odds in the $2 Million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast on 14 January, with the $101 blowout, Flying Jess. Flying Jess defeated the previously unbeaten Winning Rupert as well as dual Group 1 winner Global Glamour for a breakthrough victory. Brilliantly ridden by Tye Angland, Flying Jess swooped late to defeat Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s Global Glamour ($8) by a neck and hold off the fast finishing Eckstein ($12) whose four straight wins came to an end. Unable to run the tough seven furlongs out, the odds-on favourite, Winning Rupert ($1.70), faded late to finish fourth, two lengths away. Long due for a win, Flying Jess stormed home to break her long drought after having not won since last year’s Group Three SA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville Parks. After a resilient fourth, two starts back at Sandown on 12 November last year, when held three to four wide the entire race, Flying Jess looked like a chance in the 3YO Guineas. With a perfectly mapped race and a change in gear, John Moloney felt

confident his filly would run a good race but would have to overcome a strong field. “The blinkers have really turned around her form,” said John Moloney. “I thought she could get to the top five, so in consideration to that I thought she may have been a bit over the odds.” Flying Jess, by Hinchinbrook out of Maritess, was bought at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale for $60,000 and has now taken her career earnings to $1,296,430. Flying Jess has provided John with a million-dollar race win and one of John’s biggest victories, alongside his win in the, then Group Two, now

Group One, Queen of the Turf Stakes with Casual in 1985. “I think it matches it, it was pretty significant because of the amount of kudos we got out of the race as well as the prize money we got, so it definitely equalled it.” The Parkdale resident is part of a well-respected family dynasty dating back to the 1930’s with horse trainer, Jerry Moloney, who made his mark in the racing industry winning the Grand Annual at Warrnambool in 1934. John’s father, the late Jim (James) Moloney, also had a remarkable career in horse racing, having outstanding success from his famous Epsom training complex in Mordialloc. The

Hall of Fame trainer led a multitude of talented thoroughbreds to Group One glory, including his star sprinter and arguably one of Australia’s greatest, Vain. Following in their father’s footsteps, John and brother Gerard Moloney, head up the Moloney Racing stables from their training base, Vain Lodge, at Caulfield. The Moloney’s utilise their 100 years of combined experience to keep their thoroughbreds in fine condition and prepare them for raceday, often taking advantage of the fresh Mordialloc Beach. “It helps them with recovery and gets there legs in order; it gives them a good feature,” said John Moloney. With an impressive start to the year the Moloney’s are hoping to keep the ball rolling and have purchased another filly by Hinchinbrook at the Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale last week in hopes to replicate this year’s exceptional victory. Flying Jess will stay in Queensland for a few weeks before being sent back down to the Moloney’s stables where she’ll be targeted for a race in Sydney over the autumn carnival. John is hopeful that the filly can keep up her flying form and be competitive in some strong autumn races.

The Mount Martha Australia Day Swim By Ben Triandafillou THE Mount Martha Life Saving Club will be holding their annual Australia Day swim on Thursday, January 26 with all money raised being put towards safety equipment to protect beach goers. The day consists of several events catering to all levels of swimming ability, from the 200m Benton Road Vet Clinic Nipper swim to the much more intense Tackleworld 5km swim. The event which has been going for over 20 years is expecting a large turnout of over 3,500 people on the beach and over 1,000 competitors, the atmosphere is sure to be exciting. The Mount Martha Australia Day swim will be of the safest swims with over 100 lifeguards watching on. The MMAD event is the Mount Martha Life Saving club’s largest fundraising event often assisted by plenty of volunteers. The event is a great way to give back to the lifesaving club and the community. “The money raised goes to maintaining safety equipment that the lifeguards use to protect the people on the beach all year round,” MMAD Swim Organiser, Andrew Felsinger said. The 5km ‘crazy swim’ will begin the day at 8am with the final heat being the 1.2km ‘MMAD Swim’ starting at 11.30am. With the weather looking perfect, the MMAD Swim is set to be a brilliant day for all involved. Western Port News 24 January 2017

Truckin’ Good - Carnivals for a Cause Australia’s biggest food truck carnival is coming to Mornington Racecourse this summer, serving up tasty treats from Melbourne’s finest food trucks for the local community to enjoy, all whilst raising funds to help sick children in need. Running over the Australia day long weekend, from Wednesday, January, 25th to Sunday, January, 29th 2017, the five-day Mornington Food Truck Carnival will offer a selection of mouth-

Uruguayan-inspired food truck El Chivi will be one of many vendors at the carnival, serving deliciously authentic chivito’s (steak sandwiches). Owners Marty and Anna Eppel love bringing a piece of their culture to Melbourne. “Since my family relocated in the

Mornington CFA Celebrates 100 Years THE Mornington CFA has always been part of the Main Street Australia Day Parade and festivities but this year is a double celebration. The Brigade is officially 100 years old and begins its centenary commemoration with a huge presence of 10 vehicles, both historical and new, from hand-drawn carts to current operational vehicles. “Some of the historical vehicles are from the Victorian Fire Museum and

some we have here, said CFA Station Officer, Gary Bryant. “The parade starts at 5pm and will conclude at the Mornington Park where the historical vehicles will be on display along with members’ presence and people from the Victorian Fire Museum. The brigade will also be involved with the 6pm flag raising ceremony with the presence of Chief Officer Steve Warrington, Emergency Services

Commissioner Craig Lapsley, Chief Officer Trevor Owen, and Operations Manager Mark Kennedy. Following the flag raising ceremony at the conclusion of the Australia Day parade in Mornington Park on 26th January 2017, The Brigade 100 year book will be officially launched by the CFA Chief Officer during his public address. The 100 year book was written by

Mr Colin Fisher OAM of the Mornington and District Historical Society, in collaboration with the brigade. It documents the history and evolution of the brigade and significant events and milestones that have occurred over the century. At 8.45pm spectators are in for a treat with the Mornington and surrounding brigades conducting a fire brigade torchlight procession around

Mornington Park down to Mornington Pier. An open day at the Mornington CFA on Saturday, January 28, from 10am till 2pm, continues the celebrations with displays, handouts and information, historic fire brigade and vehicle display, and a sausage sizzle. www.morningtonfirebrigade.com.au foreshore.
