Safe haven for migratory parrots MOONLIT Sanctuary in Pearcedale is trying to shine a ray of hope on the otherwise gloomy future for the orange-bellied parrot. The sanctuary last week opened a new aviary devoted solely to the breeding of the critically endangered parrots. The number of oreange-bellied parrots in the wild is declining sharply, with many birds lost as they undertake a hazardous migration across Bass Strait from Tasmania to Victoria. See “Hazards aplenty when parrots fly strait” Page 9 Picture: Gary Sissons
Issues from ‘community’ to frogs Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au FOOTPATHS, foreshores … and frogs. There is seemingly no end – and in some cases no relation - to the variety of issues and concerns listed by the 50 candidates for the 11 seats on Mornington Peninsula Shire Council. Easily added to the three mentioned above are “over development”, waste disposal, planning for coastal “villages” and, certainly an elephant
in the room, how much councillors should be allowed to spend above their $29,000 a year stipend ($92,000 for the mayor). The candidates’ buzz word for this election is community. Although not a definable issue, community will be a frequent persuader used by candidates in their search for votes. A public forum to give ratepayers a chance to hear the six Watson ward candidates is being held at Somerville on Thursday. Starting at 7pm the forum will be in Shop 24 at Somer-
ville Central. Watson ward has been without a councillor since the May resignation of Lynn Bowden. Five candidates have nominated for adjoining Cerberus ward, including sitting councillor David Garnock. He is one of just four of the current councillors seeking re-election in a poll where the outcome is certain to be a game changer for council voting patterns. Although it’s guaranteed that seven councillors will not have been re-elected from the current council,
some of the “new” faces sitting in the council chamber after the 22 October election may be familiar, with several former councillors deciding it may be their time, again. Several candidates do not live in the wards they are seeking to represent, raising eyebrows and questions over their ability (they can) to claim mileage expenses and familiarisation with their wards - if successful. New alliances will eventually be formed within the council, but for now and at least a short time after the

election, the shire’s newly-elected community representatives will be relatively free of old animosities. Like it or hate it, Arthurs Seat is again about to be equipped with a chairlift, or rather a gondola ride called the Eagle. Candidates old and new are singing its praises and probably relieved that’s one battle they will not have to face. Surprisingly, finding a site for a swimming pool at Rosebud may again soak up council time. Continued Page 15

Man remanded for burglary, assault A 47-year-old Crib Point man has been arrested and charged following an alleged aggravated burglary at a house in Verdun Court, Crib Point, Saturday 17 September. Detective Senior Sergeant Miro Majstorovic, of Mornington Peninsula CIU, said the charges also included burglary and common law assault of a woman at the property. The man faced a bail justice week and was remanded in custody to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, 9 December.

to cut free an ATM. The second vehicle was called upon to pull free the first when it became wedged between the bollard and the wall. The 300kg ATM was lifted into the back of the second vehicle.
Anvil lifted AN antique blacksmith’s anvil was among items stolen from a shed on a Red Hill South acreage, 15-19 September. Also taken from the Pt Leo Rd property were a grass cutter, chainsaw and tools. Thieves also stole a blue Subaru from a neighbouring property over the same period.
THIEVES may have used a trailer to steal three vehicles from a Stumpy Gully Rd fruit business, overnight Sunday 25 September. They included a 1989 Holden utility, registration NHT 743, a Toyota Hilux ute and a green Mitsubishi Triton painted in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle colours.

TWO four-wheel-drives were used in a ram-raid attack on Peninsula Homemaker Centre, early Saturday 24 September, and a large amount of cash stolen. Possibly four men used a stolen Nissan Patrol to try to pull out a bollard from the front of the centre, 3.40am, but only managed to bend it. They then managed to position the vehicle so it could ram through a door into the centre, and used a large grinder
OFFENDERS may have used a key stolen in a previous incident to re-enter a house in Sarazen St, Rye, between 8-23 September. The holiday house was ransacked, and Mornington Peninsula detectives are collating a list of lost items.
A WHEELIE bin was set alight in the carpark behind shops in High St, Hastings, late Saturday 24 September. A witness said two men in dark hoodies lit the fire at about 10pm. Minor damage was caused.
Anyone with information on any of these incidents is urged to call Mornington Peninsula CIU, 5978 1300.
THE driver and passenger of a van needed hospital treatment after being hit from behind by a large truck on Peninsula Link, 8.45am, Saturday. The force of the impact stove in the front of the truck with the airbag possibly saving the driver from serious injury, Leading Senior Constable Darren Myers, of Carrum Downs Highway Patrol, said. The truck driver, who may not have noticed banked-up traffic ahead, hit the back of the cleaning service van, pushing it into the back of a small, fully loaded, passenger bus, all heading south on the freeway, between Robinsons and Golf Links roads, Frankston South. The van driver was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries. His passenger was taken to Frankston Hospital with minor injuries and later released. No one on the tourist bus was injured. In an earlier accident, which caused traffic to bank up, contributing to the truck crash, a woman in her late 40s had to be cut from a small SUV after a tyre blow-out caused it to flip near Golf Links Rd, 8.15am, Saturday. Over 60s padding up, ready to go
Taking aim: Camp Manyung’s Jim Boyle watches as Margaret and Kevin Begley experience try their hands at archery in the YMCA’s new seniors program. Picture: Yanni
Health awaits outdoor seniors CAMP Manyung, Mt Eliza, is running programs to encourage seniors to get active in the outdoors. The YMCA camp’s outdoor adventure program includes sea-kayaking, archery, high ropes and bike riding will launch on Friday 7 October at 25/35 Sunnyside Rd, Mt Eliza, and then run every month until April. The program will include challenges based on group members’ interests, as well as the weather. “We’re excited to be launching something that can make a difference to our community’s health and bring
people together,” manager Maree Feutrill said. “Research shows that, as people get older, their participation in sports and recreation declines and, for people aged 65, there’s a huge decline. “This lack of activity can lead to serious health problems and a sense of disconnection from their community.” Margaret Begley, 76, of Mornington, sees the program as a way of connecting with others and trying something new: “A lot of people my age are involved in different clubs, such as Probus and book clubs, but
this program is different as you can’t get these activities, such as archery, anywhere else. “We sit around too much; we need to get out and about and meet new people and get some fresh air – even if it’s just walking, looking at the birds and enjoying a cup of tea with others.” The program costs $12 and bookings can be made through Eventbrite bit.ly/outdoor_adventure Afternoon tea will be provided after the activity when those participating can discuss the day’s adventures.
PENINSULA Over 60 cricketers are padding up for the season opener next month with three new teams bring the competition total to 22. Peninsula players come from Frankston and all over the Mornington Peninsula to the oval at Grayden’s Rd, Tuerong. They play midweek and Sunday one-day matches comprising a 40-over innings. The game is designed for players of all abilities and new players are welcome. Some have played all their lives while others may not have played for 20-40 years. The common thread is a love of cricket and being part of a team keeping fit while enjoying the camaraderie of team sport. Over 60s cricket is into its second decade as the fastest growing branch of cricket in Australia. A national body oversees the growth of the game culminating in a national carnival – this year in Perth in November. Hundreds of senior cricketers from all over Australia will compete in several divisions to decide the national champion. An attraction of over-60s cricket is the wide range of overseas tours for players and partners run through by the Victorian Cricket Association. Peninsula players have toured Sri Lanka, Cuba, Samoa, Hawaii, Fiji, Iceland, Spain, Jamaica, North America and, of course, England. Future tours are planned for China, Japan, South Africa and South America. New players are welcome to join
in training every Thursday night, followed by a barbecue and refreshments. Details: Call chairman Dick Stumbles, 0412 348 270, or administrator Laurie Hindle, 5983 5515, or visit the VOSCA website.

Snakes spring into action THE weather’s warming up and snakes are waking up. Just as warmer, sunny days send a signal that it’s fine for outdoor recreation the same applies for snakes, who see it as time to “get some sun, look for food and a mate”, according to scientist Nick Clemann. Senior scientist from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP)’s Arthur Rylah Institute Mr Clemann said people were likely to see snakes when “walking dogs, cycling, bush walking, enjoying parks and gardening”. “Snakes are more common in areas around the urban fringe or in rural areas, but they do turn up surprisingly

close to cities and towns, especially around watercourses and in parkland,” he said. Snakes frequently found near the coast are tigers and lowland copperheads while in the drier areas the most common snakes were eastern browns and red-bellied blacks. “All four species are dangerously venomous, but it is rare for them to bite people,” Mr Clemann said. “Being aware that snakes may be around and being informed about how to react to them are the most important aspects of managing snakes.” Mr Clemann’s advice to anyone seeing a snake was to “keep calm and try to move yourself, anyone with you
and your pets away from the snake”. He said snakes were protected under the Wildlife Act 1975 and should not be harmed, killed or captured. “Bites can occur when people try to kill snakes,” he said. “Clean up around the house and cut lawns regularly – snakes are attracted to shelter such as piles of rocks and timber, sheets of metal, or building materials.” He recommended that first aid kits include compression bandages and if someone is bitten, call 000 immediately. Agonising end for trapped possum Liz Bell liz@mpnews.com.au THE RSPCA is investigating a “horrific” case of cruelty in Rye after a young brushtail possum was caught in a steeljawed trap tied to a wooden trellis. It is unknown how many hours the distressed animal was forced to hang by its crushed paw at the vacant holiday house before a nearby resident saw it and reported it to a peninsula wildlife shelter. Brenda Marmion, of the Crystal Ocean wildlife shelter, Rye, said the trap was a shocking example of disregard for native wildlife. The possum was barely alive when its plight was discovered and it had to be euthanised by a vet. “This case was really horrific, as the pain and fear the animal suffered was extreme,” Ms Marmion said. “We’re lucky to have a lot of wildlife on the peninsula and possums are protected by the law, so it makes me angry and sad that some people won’t make an effort to live peacefully with them.” Ms Marmion reported the matter to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, which has referred the case to the RSPCA. RSPCA Victoria senior Inspector Tiffany Page confirmed an investigation was underway into a report of a possum trapped in a steel-jawed trap at a property in Rye, but was unable to comment further. Under the prevention of cruelty to animals’ regulations, it is an offence to set steel-jawed traps, regardless if they have caused injury to an animal or not.
It is also illegal to buy steel-jawed traps unless the buyer can prove to be a museum or antiques collector. Offenders face up to 24 months’ jail and fines of up to $75,000. Under DELWP regulations, it is also illegal to “harass or interfere with possums” in any way. Ms Marmion, a wildlife carer for about 30 years, said that while most
peninsula residents enjoyed living in a natural environment, there were still some who refused to try to live peacefully with wildlife. “I’ve seen some terrible things, such as someone who had illegally trapped a possum and left it in the cage on a hot tin roof for three days during summer,” she said. “That is also illegal and just extremely cruel.”
Aged care by the bay that’s much closer to home.
She said possum boxes, which can be fixed to trees or other high objects, make suitable homes for possums and will keep them out of roofs. Anyone needing information or advice on wildlife, or wanting possum boxes, can call Crystal Ocean wildlife shelter on 0407 787 770. To report concerns about animal welfare go to rspcavic.org or 9224 2222.
Deadly climb: This brushtail possum, above, tries to support itself with its right paw while the other is held fast in a steel-jawed trap set on a trellis of an unocuppied holiday house at Rye. No one knows how long the possum was in agony before being freed by wildlife carer Brenda Marmion, left. The possum was unable to be saved and was put down by a vet. The RSPCA is investigating the illegal trapping of the possum. Main picture: Jarryd Bravo

School’s century celebration
CRIB Point is celebrating the 100th birthday of the original school building with a free Family Fun Day, 10am-2pm, Sunday 16 October. Former teachers of the Park Rd school will be returning to reminisce and catch up with each other and past students. Construction began on the first purpose-built school in Crib Point in 1915 and classes ran 1916-84 when it moved to Milne St. The building was saved from demolition in 1985 by the then Flinders Federal MP Peter Reith and then State MP Robin Cooper. It is now the home of the Crib Point Community House, and the building continues to reflect the old days of school life. Local groups will be joining in the fun of the family day with attractions including a jumping castle, animal farm, fairy floss, slushies, popcorn, sausage sizzle, Devonshire teas as well as a photo booth with a school theme. The school’s Then & Now group will have photos on display, so former pupils can check out their old school photos. Old fashioned games, such as hop scotch, elastics, snakes ‘n ladders, pick up sticks, knuckles, and marbles, will add to the fun. Co-ordinator Mary Budd urges former pupils to “let your friends and family know, especially if they went to Crib Point Primary School before to 1984”. Fast fun: Hamish Hardeman has loved the thrill of the track since he was a child.
This chippy’s in the fast lane ROSEBUD carpenter Hamish Hardeman is well on his way to taking on the world in the increasingly popular sport of GT3 car racing. The quietly-spoken 23-year-old won the Porsche CT3 cup challenge at Philip Island after a six-round contest against participants from all over the country. Hardeman, who has been racing for about six years, developed a passion for the sport as a child when he followed his father – who raced an MX5 - to the tracks at Sandown, Winton and Philip Island. While he started off racing motor bikes, by the
time he was in secondary school Hardeman was racing cars on the circuit and was the envy of his mates at The Peninsula School. “I used to get out of having to go to Saturday school sport, which was compulsory for everyone else, and my mates thought I was pretty lucky,” he said. Car racing has already taken Hardeman around Australia and in 2014 to Malaysia where he competed in a GT3 12-hour endurance event. His next step is the Porsche Carrera Cup in 2017, which runs alongside the V6 Super cars, and after that the world beckons.
“I’d like to race at the Australian Grand Prix, and eventually I think racing overseas is where I want to be and where the money is.” For a young person starting out it is an expensive pursuit, with a full year of racing costing about $250,000. Luckily Hardeman can take time off work when required and has the support of family and a small sponsorship base. But more sponsors are needed to help him follow his dreams. Hazards aplenty when parrots fly strait Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au IT might be a relatively narrow stretch of water, but Bass Strait is a major factor in the survival chances for the critically endangered yellowbellied parrot. With the number of birds in the wild estimated at less than 50 experts say they face most dangers when flying to Victoria from their breeding grounds in Tasmania. Most of the surviving birds are banded and are easily tracked in Tasmania as they breed in a relatively concentrated area, but the bigger problems arise on the mainland where they are spread more thinly in small groups or individually. Michael Johnson’s Moonlit Sanctuary at Pearcedale is playing a key role in a breeding program designed to increase the long term survival of orange-bellied parrots, regarded as being one of the world’s rarest and most endangered animals. A new aviary opened last week at the 10 hectare sanctuary in TyabbTooradin Rd is able to house 20 breeding pairs, enough to rear 100 young each year. Mr Johnson said parrots fly north to escape Tasmania’s severe winters. He said the birds probably follow an age-old flight path which would once have been along the “land bridge” that one connected Tasmania with mainland Australia. Three birds bred at the sanctuary will be soon released near the Tasmanian breeding grounds at Melaleuca, on the south coast.
Home away from home: Moonlit Sanctuary owner Michael Johnson has built a new aviary for orange-bellied parrots after three years successfuly breeding the critically endangered species. Pictures: Gary Sissons
“Hopefully they will breed this year before making the annual migration across Bass Strait,” Mr Johnson said. “We don’t really know why they are endangered, but the major threats come from birds of prey and flying across Bass Strait, which can’t be easy if there’s a storm.” Mr Johnson said Moonlit Sanctuary now housed 24 orange-bellied parrots and had built the new 24-aviary breeding centre after having successfully bred 20 birds in the past three years. “We were able to show it was possible to breed the parrots while still keeping costs down,” he said. Mr Johnson said while it was
difficult to track the parrots on the mainland, they had been reported in Western Port two years ago and were regulars at Swan Island in Port Phillip and at Werribee. Orange-bellied parrots - one of only two known migratory parrots - started returning to Tasmania this month and would not leave until next April. The opening of the new breeding aviary coincided with the sanctuary’s 15th anniversary. The aviary includes two 12 metre long free-flight sections for nonbreeding seasons and is designed as a quarantine centre to prevent the spread of beak and feather disease, which can
affect wild orange-bellied parrots. Zoos Victoria contributed almost $100,000 towards the new aviary. The sanctuary has been a key partner in the orange-bellied parrot program since 2013 and is committed to spending $500,000 over the next 10 years to run the new breeding centre. “These new aviaries provide a significant boost to the captive breeding program for one of Australia’s most endangered species,” Zoos Victoria’s acting general manager of threatened species, Dr Michael Magrath said. “Saving species is very much a team effort and it is terrific to have Moonlit Sanctuary substantially expanding on
their involvement and commit to saving this iconic bird from extinction.” BirdLife Australia CEO Paul Sullivan said the sanctuary’s new aviary “is critical to managing and enhancing the captive breeding program to save this species”. The new breeding centre has a viewing platform for visitors, an educational space to learn about the species, and a nest cam covering the breeding behaviours of orange-bellied parrots. The sanctuary also contributes to other threatened species recovery and breeding programs including regent honeyeaters bush stone curlews and spot-tailed quolls.

St. John’s Village – The Perfect Place to Live “TWO years ago Harry and I made a life-changing decision to leave our comfortable family home in the midst of an acre of tranquil gardens, and enter a Retirement Village. After much reflection, we decided on St. John’s Village in Somerville, which offered all the facilities we desired. Adjacent to good medical and shopping centres, and set on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, with ready access to family members in suburban Melbourne, it was the perfect place to begin our new life. The transition to our well-designed new home at St. John’s has been beyond our dreams. It’s a wonderful feeling to continue our association with activities within the Mornington Peninsula Shire, and also be part of any of the groups St. John’s offers; art, computer, bible studies, knitting, drama, exercise, bowls and the list goes on! Friendship, care and warmth surround us here – and every day we give thanks.” Valda Cole OAM Several years ago I visited St. John’s Retirement Village on Open Day. At that time I picked up an information pack, and on reading it, thought that this could be the ‘Place for Me’. But, at that stage decided that I could still manage to stay in my own home a little longer, keeping up with all that needed attention there. As time passed I began to look even more seriously at making my life a little easier, and, after talking with my family, made the decision early this year that this was the right time for me to choose where and when I would like to spend the next stage of my life. So, here I am in my new home. I felt at that time it was the right decision for me and now, 6 weeks after moving in to my unit, I know that this was definitely the right decision at the right time! The thoughtfulness of Management and staff, from my very first enquiries, made the transition from my home of 27 years to my unit at St. John’s so smooth. Their helpfulness in all things, their understanding of my situation and the patience shown as I attended to all the preliminaries before I could make the move was wonderful and so supportive.
From the day I moved in to my Unit at St. John’s I have been made to feel welcome by all the staff – management, care staff, maintenance staff and residents also – greeting me, introducing themselves and making me feel so at home. It seems that nothing is too much trouble, no questions too difficult (or annoying!) for those who care for us here – and care they do. The feeling of being part of a caring, family community is strong and is indicative of the philosophy of St. John’s Retirement Village – I know that I will enjoy my time here – moving to St. John’s has definitely been one of the best decisions of my life. Elwynne Stafford “My husband and I came to St John’s Retirement Village in Somerville in December, 2004 after looking through a number of other villages. We are very happy here and have found that one of the great things about St John’s is the friendly atmosphere and the fact that there are lovely areas throughout the Village with beautiful trees and gardens. So many villages are so built up that there are very few open spaces. The shops are quite close and we have a Village bus which caters for those of us no longer driving. We enjoy going on trips and outings and, of course, there are lots of groups and activities in which we can choose to be involved or not, but we are never bored!” Joan Rowney St. John’s Retirement Village has been improving the lifestyles of retirees on the Mornington Peninsula for over thirty one years. From single bedroom units, right through to large two bedroom units with study and attached lock up garage, we will have the unit to suit you, or if you require a little extra assistance, we have single and double serviced apartments. If you’re ready to start your future in style, make new friends and enjoy life, come along to St John’s Village Open Day, Saturday 8th October or contact Wendy Rae on 5977 6955 to make an appointment to visit St. John’s Village and find out how we can help make your life a breeze in retirement.

Land sale ‘impacts’ wildlife ENVIRONMENTALIST Steve Karakitsos says the sale of the Melbourne Business School in Mt Eliza will worsen the area’s dwindling natural environment. The introductory Game On camps – this one at Mornington Secondary School – is aimed at those aged five-10 as the first ‘stepping stone’ in their basketball pathway. The camps aim to nurture a love of the game by developing basic skills and keeping children active during the school holidays. Ex NBL player Adam Ballinger, who works for the association, heads up the program assisted by a group of skilled coaches and players from the Mornington Breakers senior representative program – the Big V.

Cannonball run at beach Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au HEAVEN knows how a cannonball lay undetected on Shire Hall beach for the past 120 years – until Peter and Fairlie Pirouc stumbled upon it last week with their metal detector. The Croydon couple often use their detectors to search for valuables, but never before had they been to the
Mornington beach where the three kilogram ball was found only four or five centimetres under the sand. “We heard yesterday that it may have been from an old ship that came in, Ms Pirouc said. “Or perhaps it came from the fort at Queenscliff with all the dredging? It’s one of those mysteries. Whatever its origin, the find caused quite a stir – first for the couple who joked that it could be a bomb, and then
for staff at their local police station who feared it was a bomb. “It looked the same colour as the surrounding rocks and blended in, and then I saw that it was cylindrical and picked it up, said Ms Pirouc, adding that she was usually the “digger who follows her husband about as he explores likely terrain with his more expensive detector. After finding the object with her cheaper $75 detector on Tuesday she
called out to Mr Pirouc “and I’ve never seen him scoot up so fast. After a leisurely lunch in Main St, and with their find “safely stowed in the boot, the couple followed a hunch and stopped off at Ringwood Army Barracks on their way home to report it – only to be redirected to Croydon police station. There, the next day, the possible dangers were quickly realised and the station evacuated.
A plugged hole drilled into the cannonball signalled the danger, and Army officers from Victoria Barracks arrived to take it away and detonate it. “We didn’t know if it had black powder in it or not, Ms Pirouc said. The couple are frequent visitors – and big spenders – at a Croydon metal detecting equipment supplier, which set Ms Pirouc thinking: “We should be getting sponsorship, she quipped.

Council acted too soon by lifting expenses
A diagram prepared by Mornington Peninsula Shire showing the skatepark it wants to build on the parade ground alongside the tennis courts at Mt Martha.
Skatepark planned for wrong site The committee of Mt Martha Tennis Club would like to re-state the club’s position for the proposed skatepark with the following facts: The collective membership of the club is not opposed to a skatepark situated on the parade grounds [at the corner of the Esplanade and Kilburn Grove]. The proposed location (hard up against the existing four tennis courts) is unacceptable, as it will significantly impact on the unique environment required to coach and play tennis. The club has a seasonal membership of around 500 players and was recently ranked the 49th largest tennis club in Victoria. Many of our family members would enjoy the use of a skatepark. The club has 40 teams of which 25 are juniors. We recognise serving our youth is one of our primary roles. Many teams cannot play a home game due to the lack of court availability. This overcrowd-
ing has been occurring for an extended period of time and many committees have worked with Mornington Peninsula Shire to improve the club’s facilities. The shire has recognised the urgent and immediate need for improved facilities and has rebuilt the clubhouse and upgraded the Watson Rd tennis courts for the club and community use. All members are grateful to the shire for its assistance with these upgrades. The shire had proposed and planned a fifth tennis court for the club as part of a strategy plan. It now appears that the shire wants to replace the area for the additional court with a skatepark. The club is disappointed that it now finds itself in the invidious situation of having to publicly defend a position that the shire rescinded on – that of an additional tennis court on the parade ground. Ken Davis, president Mt Martha Tennis Club
I was appalled to read about the adoption by Mornington Peninsula Shire Council of an increased expenses policy (“Council backs cost increase” The News 13/9/16). This council leaves a lot to be desired and has little regard for the ratepayers it represents as evidenced by this non-essential use of ratepayers’ money. With the forthcoming council elections this issue should have been left to the incoming council. I fail to understand what outgoing councillors Anne Shaw, Andrew Dixon and David Gibb had to gain by voting for this divisive issue. Decision making has never been a strong point with this council but it seems to work when it is in councillors’ own interests. This generous expense issue which allows each councillor to spend up to $30,000 over the four-year term (in addition to their stipend) should be addressed by the incoming council. I also believe that the $4000 entertainment allowance should be part and parcel of their $29,000 stipend, not an extra. It may be time that the performance of this council should be the subject of a state government review and it may be that the appointment of an administrator may be appropriate. Graham Lee, McCrae Editor: Last month the Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass interviewed the mayor Cr Graham Pittock, CEO Carl Cowie and governance manager Joe Spiteri as part of an investigation into secrecy in local government. Complaints about Mornington Peninsula Shire have been made to the Ombudsman’s office by several individuals and community-based organisations (“Shire part of secrecy probe” The News 2/8/16).
Applaud openness So ex-councillor Brian Stahl is shocked that “a political party has openly stated that it will field candidates” in the October Mornington Peninsula Shire Council election (“Keep politics out of local government” Letters 20/9/16). Perhaps in Mr Stahl’s experience the Greens’ openness and honesty is a rare commodity. We feel very strongly that voters deserve respect and as Greens we have no difficultly in declaring our endorsement of candidates for the council elections who share our values of community, environment and a positive vision for a sustainable Mornington Peninsula. We challenge all other candidates to be as open and honest as we are in this election and to declare their endorsements, political allegiances and connections, and the sources of their campaign funding. Contrary to Mr Stahl’s depiction of party influence, voters can be assured that candidates endorsed by the Greens will at all times represent their communities and act in the best interests of the peninsula. Mr Stahl appears to have overlooked the Greens position on local government representatives; we strongly support the provisions of the Local Government Act that ensure that the Greens endorsed candidates will be as independent as any other elected councillors, assessing issues on their merits, deciding matters impartially and setting directions for a better council. Kelvin Stingel, convenor Mornington Peninsula Greens

local government (“Keep politics out of local government” Letters 20/9/16). I am standing for the Seawinds ward because I have a passion for the local community and the Mornington Peninsula. The Greens do not have local council policies and will not direct local councillors on local government issues. I am supported by the Greens for this election because of shared values in openness, community and environment and I have declared my support because I believe in transparency, something that is sadly missing from local council. Gary Homewood (candidate for Seawinds)
Complaints were aired I read with interest the article on the concerns of residents in relation to noise emanating from the construction works at RACV Cape Schanck and am perplexed at the comments made by both Cr Graham Pittock and the RACV’s project manager, Brad Van Cuylenberg (“Noise causes breakdown with RACV” The News 13/9/16). How Cr Pittock can suggest he is not aware of the concerns of residents when submissions have been made to council by numerous residents over the past few months is astonishing. Does he have his head in the sand? [Builder] Kane has been fined at least once for a breach and residents have communicated formally with council officers on numerous occasions in relation to breaches. At times this has necessitated going to the CEO in order to get a response from the relevant council officer. If councillors are not aware then there is a failure of process within council. As to Brad Van Cuylenberg’s comment in relation to regular stakeholder meetings to keep residents updated, this is indeed true. But what is missing from his commentary is that numerous construction-related issues are raised at each and every meeting. All are discussed and “taken on board”, but none ever appear to be resolved to the satisfaction of residents. The RACV is concerned with the amenity of only one group of stakeholders - resort guests and visitors. Those of us who live permanently in this beautiful part of the world are a mere
inconvenience. I am one who did fight the development, but only because I believe that aesthetically the build is not in keeping with the environment. But, having lost that argument, I moved on and welcome and look forward to the benefits that the development will bring. Irene Wyld, Cape Schanck
Sympathy misdirected Malcolm Turnbull’s behaviour on refugee and immigration is getting ever weirder. One has to congratulate him that he committed Australia to take more refugees from refugee camps. But to take people from Costa Rica and still ignore the human catastrophe in our concentration camps on Nauru and Manus Island is beyond believe. If the Turnbull government is fair dinkum about stopping people drowning in oceans near Australia because they want to escape the terribly hopeless conditions in refugee camps around Asia, wouldn’t it be much better to increase the intake of refugees from camps in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia? This sorry saga seems to confirm my suspicions that the crocodile tears about the drowning refugees are just that. Australia and regional powers need to get together and solve the terrible plight of refugees in our region. We don’t need to deflect our attention to the other side of the world just to ingratiate ourselves with the Americans or the rest of the world. This will not gloss over our appalling treatment of refugees in our care. Rupert Steiner, Balnarring
Short changed I was under the impression that the federal government required banks to provide interest rates on deeming accounts for age pensioners at similar rates to the deeming rates applied by Centrelink, but that appears to have been discontinued without any fanfare. Westpac recently changed the name of its account for pensioners from Deeming Account to 55+ and Retired but failed to tell the account holders that they also reduced interest rates to well below Centrelink deeming rates. Their
maximum rate on this account is now 2.25 per cent. The other side of the story is that the government is still holding deeming rates for couples at 1.75 per cent for the first $81,600 and 3.25 per cent for all savings in excess of that. In other words, our pensioner-bashing government is quietly continuing to use figures for earning rates that are unattainable. For partially self-funded retirees this is a disaster and another example of how our coalition government sees taking money from the least able to pay as the best way to balance the budget. The money they take from the age pensioners will obviously help finance the $46 billion in tax cuts they are going to give to big business. The Labor Party doesn’t seem to have done much to oppose this either, but at least they are on the right track in seeking to have a royal commission into the banks. It’s a pity that the senate is only a house of review, otherwise we may have been able to appeal to Nick Xenophon or Pauline Hanson about this. James McLoughlin, Balnarring
There’s Hope for Rye McCrae was once Dromana, Blairgowrie Sorrento East. With the change of West Rosebud to Capel Sound I’m looking for a consortium to put a case for a change of Rye to Hope; there’s a ring to living in Hope. “Where do you live?” “I live in Hope”. A ring of truth. There are 50 places called Hope throughout the world, including in the United States, the UK and Jamaica, but none in Australia. We deserve a place called Hope. A second choice, according to a small-minded few, could be Oblivion? Cliff Ellen, Rye
Fond food farewell In Rye, this week we were sad to see the closing down of our Iconic well known Italian restaurant, the Marine Tavern. For more than 30 years it has been a regular for our family and many of our neighbours and friends. Please consider Just because someone has lived in an area for yonks wakes up one day and finds retirement boring, and the other significant person in that relationship doesn’t want unnecessary domestic space being occupied all day, doesn’t qualify you for representing thousands of unknown residents, some of who you might call neighbour. A commitment to stand up and fight for local issues over a respectable period of time is a pretty good indicator of a sincere and worthy citizen. Blow-ins from the city, unfulfilled careerists, single issue newbies, long term fence sitters and absentee public officials, don’t impress the majority of ratepayers and residents. A willingness to listen, learn and respond to the inevitable complaints of unrepaired roads, dangerous intersections, noisy neighbours, parking infringements, wilful damage, climbing rates and council charges, fencing disputes, statutory planning issues, bushfire awareness, illegal dumping and so on. If you haven’t had experience in these fairly common community issues, what skills and experience do you really have to offer? The Mornington Peninsula Ratepayers’ & Residents’ Association often has to involve itself on behalf of local people when recourse to their local ward councillor has been unsatisfactory. Rate capping has been achieved by such organisations working away in the background and long hours have been expended for no financial reward except for the knowledge that if they didn’t do it, the councils would get away with continuous rate hikes. Voters should closely look at the half or dozen candidates for the plum Briars ward and judge for themselves who has earned the right through community work in the Mt Eliza, Mornington and Mt Martha to represent them. Ian Morrison, secretary MPRRA, Mt Eliza Community Alliance, South Eastern Centre of Sustainability and the Kunyung Rd Residents Group. More letters Page 15

Continued from Page 1 Rex Griffin, a former mayor and still current councillor of the City of Whittlesea, has nominated for Seawinds ward. Mr Griffin is moving to his former holiday home at Dromana and says he has been a regular in the public gallery at meetings of Mornington Peninsula council for the past five years. He says the council has been “like a cesspool, with councillors arguing and fighting. Enough’s enough”. Mr Griffin says disposing waste off the peninsula is expensive and notes that the Rye tip “can be kept open for another 18 years”. He believes that with his help and experience the shire can get more money from state and federal governments. Regarding a swimming pool at Rosebud, or SPA (Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre), Mr Griffin says “you can throw a pool anywhere” but enthuses about “how Lorne and other places have pools on the foreshore”. “There’s room down there [on the Rosebud foreshore]. It’s accessible and I can’t see a problem with it going there.” Former councillor and mayor (2011-12) Frank Martin, although living in Briars ward, is also seeking election in Seawinds. Mr Martin wants to see the councillors’ code of conduct “revisited and enforced”; is wary of the increasing number of high density developments; and wants changes to the special charge schemes for constructing footpaths: “we don’t need concrete footpaths everywhere”. Although previously a councillor in Red Hill ward, Mr Martin says he’s long had an affinity with Dromana, Rosebud and Rye. While wanting some clearing along the foreshore to make way for more tables and chairs, he says “SPA is done and dusted, as long as the pool goes somewhere”. Without “committing” to a preferred site Mr Martin said “SPA is gone off the foreshore at the moment. If it’s a no, no, no, [we should] go to the second best place”. Numerically, the Briars ward is the most interesting with 15 candidates contesting three seats. A plan to spend up to $825,000 on a skatepark is an issue, with the shire choosing to renege on a lease with Mt Martha Tennis Club to free up the
chosen site. The site has been approved by Heritage Victoria, but it seems the shire overlooked the fact that it had leased the land to the tennis club until 2023. There will be at least two new councillors in the ward after the October poll and plenty of time to force a backflip and moving the skatepark to Ferrero Oval if Heritage Victoria will not approve any other site on the former parade ground. Among those seeking election to Briars ward is Kevin Murphy, secretary of the Mt Martha House management committee, which is opposed to the skatepark on the parade ground. Another Briars ward candidate, Stewart Lockie, said the skatepark proposal was backed by many families but questions were being raised “over why it has taken so long”. One of his aims, if elected, is to hear people saying "the shire are doing a good job". Steering clear of the skatepark, Briars candidate Rebecca Taylor is perhaps the first person to seek public finance for a shire election campaign. “Running for council is something I need to do in order to preserve the only stable frog population left in Mt Eliza. They live in a reservoir earmarked for redevelopment, but I believe natural habitats in suburban areas add value to communities,” she states in her pitch for support on the GoFundMe website. Ms Taylor also mentions the need for better parking and desire for a system “that doesn’t see [pre-school] children travelling outside their communities or left with no place at all”. The Briars ward has three councillor vacancies; five candidates are contesting the single-councillor Cerberus ward; eight in the two-councillor Nepean ward; six in Red Hill, which is also represented by one councillor; 10 in three-councillor Seawinds ward; and six candidates are after the single seat in Watson ward. Councillors not seeking re-election are the mayor Graham Pittock, Anne Shaw, David Gibb, Andrew Dixon, Tim Rodgers and Tim Wood; Lynn Bowden resigned in May. Fifteen of the 50 candidates are women. At the start of the previous four-year council term four of the 11 councillors were women. Candidates’ names are listed on the Victorian Electoral Commission website: www.vec.vic.gov.au/MorningtonPeninsulaElection/Candidates/
LETTERS Need for Nuisance What a revelation in the “100 years ago this week” feature (The News 20/9/16), there was then an Inspector of Nuisances. Why has this position been dropped? It should be first priority when the new council is elected. What marvellous scope there could be for the position to investigate: council regulations, building and planning, which many would see as a big nuisance. Keith Murley, Blairgowrie
Spend elsewhere Councillors Anne Shaw and Andrew Dixon want to turn an oasis of coastal green, the tennis
courts beneath historic Mt Martha House, into an $800,000 skatepark. Really. To read that Cr Dixon is quoted as commenting that the tennis club refusal to give up the land was “… the most selfish behaviour we’ve witnessed by a community group since the council term began in 2012”, well, I almost snorted my coffee. (OK, in the interest of full disclosure, I did snort my coffee). We all know green space in built up areas is an unlimited commodity; indeed, we have come to understand that skateparks actually become increasingly beautiful as the years go by. They have never been known to attract anti-social behaviour (particularly after dark), graffiti, or
rubbish. Who would even hesitate at the chance to bung one up in a quiet, peaceful corner of pleasant coastal town? Here is a clue Crs Shaw and Dixon, offered to you for free because you do not seem to have one: Use the $800,000 to clean up the peninsula. The rubbish dumped along roads and highways is a health hazard, ugly, and growing by the week. Do something meaningful for the population you are meant to represent. David Martin, Mt. Martha
Costly footpath My wife and I were one of 87 per cent of property owners on Coppin Rd, Sorrento, who peti-
tioned the Mornington Peninsula Council not to proceed with an unwanted and poorly designed footpath project. Our petition fell on deaf ears at council and we have just lost an expensive appeal to VCAT - costly for all ratepayers. Our local councillors have completely disregarded our repeated pleas to represent what is clearly the view of a majority of ratepayers. At the forthcoming council elections it is time that all ratepayers across the shire ensure they only vote for councillors who will truly represent their views. If you have any doubt about your incumbent councillor’s view on footpath projects, do not vote for them. Bill Holmes, Sorrento

The home has been meticulously constructed with a true eye for quality and delivers exquisite luxury over a seamless three-level floor plan that receives plenty of natural light. A central living room with wood fire makes a dramatic statement under towering
cathedral ceilings with the vast space breezily heading down into a separate dining area which flaunts an inspiring built-in breakfast bar set into the window ledge where bifold windows reveals the expansive treetop vista beyond. For those with a flair for entertaining, the adjoining kitchen will delight with a massive recessed area for a double door fridge and quality stainless-steel appliances including a twin-drawer dishwasher, large oven and gas hotplates. From here you can step out to the expansive barbecue deck which looks out across the Moorooduc Plains. A second vibrant living area shares the same view, and can
be discreetly closed off to form a separate zone for guest accommodation complete with bedroom and bathroom. Two excellent master bedrooms both have an ensuite – one also has a walk-in robe – and a huge mezzanine level comprises a fourth bedroom or home office. This exquisite fairytale home is situated in a tranquil pocket of Mount Eliza, enjoying an exceptional level of privacy ensconced in a natural bush setting. The block measures about 1420 square metres, and from the street is a long paved driveway leading to a four vehicle carport with an adjoining workshop.

This property is definitely going to suit the large or extended family with both levels set up for selfcontained living with a total of four bedrooms and two bathrooms, plus a handy powder room. There are two kitchens, a separate study, and three living areas will make sure that everyone gets their own space. 100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...
Tragic drowning of 11-year-old boy Compiled by Melissa Walsh ON Saturday, at 6.30pm, Henry Woodward, about 11 years of age, was drowned at Carrum, and Mr C. Gill, the local dairyman, had a narrow escape from a similar fate. The boy, wanting to see the flood, had persuaded Mr Gill to take him with him in his cart on the way to Well’s road. To reach his destination he had to drive through the flooded portion. Suddenly the horse was carried off its feet, the cart went under, and both man and boy were swept into the water. Gill got the boy on his back and made a desperate effort to save him but while endeavoring to get to a shallower spot the boy was swept away again and drowned. The horse was also drowned, and with the cart disappeared. Neighbors have been out in boats searching for the boy’s body, but at a late hour on Sunday it had not been recovered. Several families have been taken in boats from their homes to a place of safety. *** MESSRS A. Scott and Co.’s monthly sale at Tanti will be held on Monday next, when a good yarding of stock will be forward. *** MESSRS Croft Bros., Somerville, notify that they have just opened up a choice lot of ladies’ and children’s summer millinery; also good range in fancy voiles, crepes, prints, muslins, and all the seasonable lines, to which they invite inspection. ***
OWING to the severe illness of the auctioneer at the last moment the furniture sale advertised to be held in Messrs Brody and Mason’s Mart, Frankston, last Wednesday, had to be adjourned, and it will now be held on Wednesday next, 4th October, instead of the usual produce sale. *** MR G. Hesselman who won the boat, which was given by Mr Marks to be raffled in aid of Xmas gifts for the soldiers in the trenches, has presented it to the Frankston District Roll of Honor to be raffled again. The work of art is on view at Mr A. Shannon’s store. *** AT a meeting of the committee of the Frankston District Roll of Honor Fund, the hon. sec. presented a balance sheet in detail of the Scotch Concert given by Mr Harry Skinner’s Company. This showed the gratifying result of £17 5s 11d clear profit. The committee wish to thank those who so kindly helped to make the concert a success especially Mrs H. Garrood and Mrs Moloney, and Mr F. R. Smith, for their donation towards the expense. The donations have been previously acknowledged in these columns. *** IT will be seen by an advertisement in another column that a meeting of the contributors to the various presentation funds to Frankston volunteers will be held at the Mechanics’ Institute, on Wednesday evening next. The chief business to be submitted
will be the arranging a sixth presentation to Frankston volunteers and the desirability or otherwise of afterwards closing the fund. The latter question has arisen from the fact that the issue of a proclamation is now imminent calling up all single men between the ages of 21 and 35. A good attendance is looked for, to fully discuss the subject. *** THE balance sheet presented by the “Wattles” Club for the purchase of crockery for the use of returned wounded soldiers is as follows:— Receipts—To sale of tickets, £2 12s 6d;cash taken at door, £2 5s 6d. Total £4 18s. Expenditure:—Rent of Mechanics’ £1, printing tickets, 6s.funds for crockery £3 12s. Total £4 18s. Balance sheet of “Wattles” Club dance held on 22nd, to raise funds for filling billies and boxes for the soldiers:— Receipts— cash taken at door, £2 17s; cake raffle, £1 18s 9d; tray cloth raffle, £1 10s, total, £6 5s 9d. Expenditure— Rent of hall, £1; music, 1s ; candles, 8d; billies, 3s 9d.—£2 0s 5d. Cash in hand £4 5s 4d. Total £6 5s 9d. *** IN speaking of the splendid work done by the stretcher bearers who were at the taking of Pozieres, Lance-Corporal A. D. Baily, in writing to the London office of the Melbourne “Herald” says, “They were just wonderful,” he declares. “They did the bravest things on the battleground.
There was one little chap—Corporal Bates—working all the time at fixing the wounded up with field dressings, with only a sand bag between him and the Germans, and he did the business as coolly as if he were watching Carlton and Fitzroy on a Saturday afternoon.” Corporal Bates mentioned above is the son of Mr A. E. Bates, of Mornington formerly resident of Frankston. “Bobby” Bates, as he was familiarly called, was one of the best of Frankston’s footballers, and was a general favorite with all. His many friends will be pleased to hear of him as still going strong. *** THE “Wattle Club” dance, in aid of Christmas boxes for the soldiers, was not as well attended as was expected, owing undoubtedly to the extremely wet night, but those who did brave the elements were amply rewarded, spending a very pleasant evening, dancing to good music supplied by Miss Daniels, of Melbourne. The sum of £5 was raised by the effort, which will go towards providing some small amount of cheer for somebody’s brothers, who are so badly in need of a little encouragement from their own Australia. A tray cloth, made, and presented by Miss Spillane, and a beautiful cake, presented by Mr Marks, were raffled during the evening and were the means of swelling the fund to a great extent. The cloth was won by Mr Grice,
and the cake by Mr Heselman. During the evening Miss Gray (the late secretary of the club) was presented with a handsome case of afternoon tea spoons and cake forks, on the eve of her marriage. Mr Lidgerwood, in making the presentation, referred to the excellent work Miss Gray had done for the club and her untiring efforts to bring it to the flourishing state it was now in. He expressed the feelings of all present in wishing Miss Gray all the good luck that could come her way. Mr C Paynter briefly responded on Miss Gray’s behalf. Supper was partaken of, and dancing renewed with fresh vigor till 1 o’clock. *** THE “Wattles “ Club. will hold a dance this (Saturday) evening in the Frankston Mechanics’ Institute in aid of the local Red Cross Society. First class music will be provided, and a most enjoyable evening is guaranteed. The hot water kettle donated by Mrs Hay will be drawn for during the evening. *** AT the invitation of the committee of the Frankston Mechanics’ Institute the stallholders at the recent bazaar, and their friends met, and were entertained in the Hall, on Wednesday evening last, when a very happy time was spent in cards, music and dancing. *** From the pages of the Mornington Standard, 30 September, 1916
THE MEANING OF EXISTENCE... AND OTHER SHORT STORIES
Census working overtime By Stuart McCullough YOU’RE welcome. By all means, send your best wishes by card, email or carrier pigeon but please, no flowers. After all, it truly was my pleasure. In fact, you might even say it was my duty. The weight of personal obligation aside, do spare me a thought when the next school, hospital or sporting stadium pops up in your neck of the woods. For I have done my part to make all these things happen. Granted, mine is a modest contribution, but without it you might have had to settle for a cinder-block bus shelter and a give-way sign. That’s right: I have completed the Census. As a highly connected, supercharged bona fide digital citizen of the twenty first century, I completed my Census online, albeit about three weeks after it was originally scheduled. After all, Census night did not go entirely to plan this time. Having said that, the sheer glee with which some people celebrated this slight technical hitch was, I feel, bordering on ungracious. Indeed, not since the residents of Munchkinland reacted to seeing the Wicked Witch of the East get totally mangled by an errant farmhouse that fell out of the sky by singing ‘Ding Dong the Witch is Dead’ have we seen such a display of malevolent delight. To all those naysayers, I say ‘so what?’ So what if on the big night the webpage fell over quicker than an elephant on an ice rink? That should not detract from the unmitigated glory that is Census night. The fact that it was a schmozzle of near-Biblical propor-
tions (most likely the book of Revelations) matters not one bit. Truth is, I don’t care whether they pulled down the page because we were under sustained cyber-attack by a hostile foreign government intent on wreaking revenge for making fun of their Olympic swimming team or a fifteen year old who used one too many doubleadapters to accommodate his X-Box, Census night is still awesome. I know that some people – even members of the Australian Senate – have raised concerns about privacy. This is result of a change in data handling practices. Apparently the Bureau of Statistics plans to hold on to our names for four years instead of the usual eighteen months. Granted, four years is a long time to not have access to your own name, but I see it as
something of an opportunity. I’ve always wanted to make a name for myself and the loss of my real name is the perfect excuse. Either Lord Squishy Thundertrunks or Sir Selwyn SausageFingers would be great (unless those names are already taken). That said, I’ve always lacked the necessary DIY skills to make anything much, including a name for myself. There’s a risk that I may not get past the blueprint stage but it’s a risk I’m prepared to take. It’s worth it. However, sometimes I don’t think we give Census night the credit it deserves. Christmas comes every year. Census night is only once every five years. Statistically speaking, Census night is five times more special than Christmas and should be treated as such. We should not only record who we were
with on the big night, but exchange gifts also. Come to think of it, five years is way, way too long to wait. The Census should be annually. And it shouldn’t just be about where to build the next school or municipal building but where to locate convenience stores, fish and chip shops and reliable dry cleaners who do more than simply claim same-day dry cleaning but, gosh darn it, deliver it. Life moves too quickly to have to wait half a decade for anything. On second thoughts, even annually is not enough. Make it weekly. Scratch that. The Census should be fitted to your car like an interlock so that every time you turn the key to head down to the shops, you have to fill out your form before the engine will start. That way, at least the questions that impact
road infrastructure will be front of mind. In this world of ‘sat nav’ and ‘touch screens’, the car is pretty much a laptop on wheels anyway. Anything is possible. Then there’s the matter of the questions themselves. We should settle everything through the Census. Perhaps we could even change its name to ‘Con-Census’ to indicate that we, as a nation, have resolved all manner of issues by general agreement. Information about where to build schools and hospitals is all well and good, but there’s no reason why we couldn’t go a lot further. Issues such as marriage equality could be swiftly resolved. In fact, forget lining up to cast your vote in an election – the Census would replace queuing up at your local primary school. Now that I think about it, the Census should incorporate your footy tips, Christmas list and who Richie should have chosen in the season finale of The Bachelor. (I still feel the result would have gone Alex’s way. Truly.) The problem isn’t that the Census is too invasive. It’s that it doesn’t go far enough. Sometimes I wish I could look at my previous Census forms. It’d be like flipping through a digital photo album. In a funny way, the Census underscores the inevitability of change; both personally and as a nation. It’s a neat reminder that time, however ordinary it may seem, marches forward regardless. We can only hope that we keep up. Best wishes - Lord Squishy Thundertrunks Esquire, Tyabb. stuart@stuartmccullough.com

Who can challenge Stonecats? PENINSULA LEAGUE
By Toe Punt IT was six premierships in seven years for Frankston YCW last Sunday. What an unbelievable achievement from a lot of dedicated off-field people and a committed on-field group. Question now is, will this continue? A competition-wide salary cap of $150,000 per year is expected to effect the Stonecats. How do they keep the list together? Do the players take a significant pay cut to stay together? Or, as some would have you believe, after so many flags, now is the time to explore other opportunities. With absolute respect to Frankston YCW (they absolutely deserve to have achieved the success they have!), this would be the best thing for the Peninsula competition. There is daylight between the Stonecats and the rest of the competition and players leaving is the only way to even things up. The Player Points System doesn’t allow clubs to go out and recruit to catch-up. So, as we approach the mad ‘offseason’ period, what can you expect from your club as they prepare for 2017. Frankston YCW: The Stonecats need to appoint a coach and appoint one quickly. Opposition clubs are circling the Stonecats and a new coach needs to reel them in quickly. YCW historically have appointed within, however, now might be the time to look outside, to bring some freshness to the list. The key for this club and the new coach is simply to hang onto the 2016 list and improve relationships with others pushing for selection. BJ Credlin needs to go on The Recruit in 2017! Mt Eliza: Mt Eliza looked unbackable at half time in the grand final last
Picture: Andrew Hurst weekend. By three-quarter time, you couldn’t get off them quick enough. As good as the Mounties were, there’s still a gap. They’ll all be better for the ‘learning’ year of 2016. There were 46 players who played senior footy this season for Mt Eliza. The reserves and Under 19s won their third straight flag. There’s absolutely no reason to think that they won’t be there on the final day again. Pines: The first thing the Pythons needed to do was lock away Aaron Edwards – they did that last week. Tim
Bongetti has committed. Pines just needs to add some depth to their line up and a few recruits in the off-season will assist with that. Pines is also keen on getting hold of 19 and 20 year-olds, like Brad Kiely, so they’ll be active in that space. Bonbeach: The Sharks were considered a bit of a smoky coming into this year’s finals but let themselves down. They took a while to get going in 2016 (lost first four games) and really never played their best footy consistently. Consistency is the key, as is adding a
couple of recruits to the list and keeping Shane McDonald. Edithvale: The Eagles have already got back Brent Bowden and Matty Clark and are hopeful of getting back Brad Tagg, which would be a formality you would expect. There’s some exciting kids coming through who got a taste of it late and in a final. There are some powerbrokers looking after recruiting, so expect them to land a few. Seaford: The Tigers improved rapidly under the guidance of Ben Mur-
phy in 2016 and they’ll take another step again. The club is young and Murphy would have learnt a lot about his group and the competition. The Tigers have already picked up goal kicking midfielder Damien Rayson, who has played VFL. Expect more recruits to follow. Mornington: The Doggies were the disappointment of 2016. A soft preseason cost the Dogs at the beginning of the year and they came storming home late. Their top-end talent is as good as any and they have some great kids who were exposed to senior footy this year. With a strong pre-season, the Dogs will be the big mover. Karingal: The Bulls have landed a new coach in former VFL assistant Andrew Sharp. The red and white are hopeful of some Dolphins’ recruits on the back of that appointment. Leigh Poholke has left, as has ruckman Grant Goodall. Grant leaves a big hole. Luke Van Ran Raay and Michael Burke will go around again. The kids will take another step. Recruits is the key for the Bulls, as is a clear and concise game style. Langwarrin: The Kangaroos did a lot better in 2016 than anyone outside of the club expected. Some kids got an opportunity and rose to the challenge and there’s plenty to work with. The club is likely to continue on the ‘youth’ path. Ideally, they could do with a key forward and backman and a couple of midfielders with silky foot skills. Chelsea: The Seagulls are stable, both on and off the field. It’s been a while since that has been the case. Brett Dunne and his coaches have all been reappointed, the majority of the list has resigned and the off-field group is united. The Gulls just need a big pre-season and a couple of recruits and they’ll be a whole lot more competitive for longer in 2017.
Blues to set benchmark in 2017 NEPEAN LEAGUE By Toe Punt THE 2016 Nepean Division season may have come to a conclusion with Hastings winning the flag, however, the silly season is about to begin as teams prepare to challenge in 2017. For footy clubs, the season never finishes – one season just rolls into another. Who’s going to take us to the next level? Where did we fall short? These are the questions that coaching groups and committees discuss at the conclusion of every season. It’s the catalyst for hundreds of phone calls being made between now and the first bounce of 2017. So what would be the plans of your club in the off-season? Hastings: Success breeds success! The Blues have already landed former VFL player Ricky Ferraro and the hot word is that there are others to follow, although the club is keeping its cards close to its chest. The Blues got their mojo six weeks out from finals and I can only see them improving as a group. I doubt very much they’ll lose
PAGE 42
anyone and there will be no premiership hangover. Frankston: The Bombers know they weren’t far away. Ryan Kitchen needs to get himself super fit. He had a big reputation coming in but finished the third or fourth ranked ruckman in the comp. He will make a significant difference if he can get himself right. Mitch Bosward and Jay Reynolds have been linked all season. A tougher draw in 2017 will make them a better and more hardened team. Rosebud: The Buds are looking for their third coach in as many years. Nick Jewell wanted a commitment from the club in 2015 and didn’t get one, so he committed to a club (Sorrento) that wanted to invest in him. 2016 coach Michael Kraska lost the support of the playing group and it was unworkable moving forward. The Buds need to get this right for 2017 and beyond. What’s best for the footy club long term? It seems there’s too many agendas both on and off the field with word players are dictating who the club should and shouldn’t interview for the top job. They simply need to find the best coach available. They missed on now
Western Port News 27 September 2016
Mt Eliza coach Troy Shannon last year because they dragged their heels. The right decision needs to be made. Their list is outstanding and they’ll challenge again with the right coach. They need to keep Greg Bentley! Somerville: All eyes will be on this club in the pre-season. Bevan Malloy has been appointed coach. The question is, who will stay and who will go? Scott Simpson is on his way to WA and Luke Rowe is off to the US. What will Josh Westerman, Billy Rolfe and Tim McGennis do? What will Tim and David Hirst do? Todd Farrelly has retired. If the Eagles can keep the same list and add a couple, they’re good enough to be there again. Red Hill: The Hillmen were superb in 2016. They have already added one of the league’s best ever, Chris Irving, who will play as a forward. They need a ruckman and another onballer to help Sean Marchetti. They might be close with a big man. The return of Paul Wintle in defence would top them off. The Hillmen will make a massive leap and challenge if they can get what they need. Sorrento: The Sharks will be the big
movers in 2017. Myles Pitt and Leigh Poholke return up forward, Daniel Grant comes back into defence and Rob Forrest returns from a knee in the middle. Add that to a premiership Under 19 team with enormous talent with a taste of senior experience and the Sharks will be there when the whips are cracking. Rye: The Demons will no doubt be looking to bring on some more Under 19s this season. A good crop of Under 17s are coming up and they’ll be exposed to senior footy. Rye has also been able to hang on to the nucleus of their recruits, including Ryan Mullet and Kris Bardon. They should have a few points up their sleeve and will no doubt extend their recruitment web. Dromana: The Tigers will be hoping to see the return of some of their stars from yesteryear – using the great Rikki Johnston (coach) to lure them. Their kids will hopefully get into the gym in the off-season and come back stronger. The Tigers’ best was good enough. Consistency is the key. Devon Meadows: The Panthers will be hoping for some luck in 2017. They were hit with the injury stick in 2016
and emotionally they were rocked and knocked. There will be no excuses in 2017. They recruited well in the offseason last year and just need those players to take the field more often than not in 2017. Crib Point: The Magpies were the big disappointment of 2016 after some heavy recruiting. With Brad Arnold now in charge and having the respect of the entire playing group, expect the Magpies to be a lot more competitive next season. Pearcedale: The Panthers have appointed Leigh Stewart as coach for 2017. Former coach Jamie Merchan is still onboard. The key for the Dales will be hanging onto their list as opposition clubs circle during the offseason. Tyabb: The Yabbies improved rapidly in 2017. There were a couple of big losses in there but on the whole, they were very competitive. Having former North Melbourne powerbroker Ron Joseph playing a mentor role off the field, as well as helping out, will be a significant bonus for the club, which has stability.

Skelly, Sharpe ensure perfect Heart beat SOCCER
By Craig MacKenzie ROSEBUD Heart cemented its claim as Victoria’s team of the year by clinching the State 5 grand final in a penalty shootout last Saturday at Murphy Reserve in Port Melbourne. The season finale presented Heart with the opportunity to continue its perfect record having won every league game in State 5 South and becoming only the third senior team in the past 54 years to achieve such a feat. Heart went into this clash with State 5 North champion RMIT as a firm favourite but the large group of travelling Heart fans soon found out that their side was in for the fight of its life. The first good chance fell to Heart scoring machine Dave Greening but his first-time strike was straight at RMIT keeper Danny Graham. In the 12th minute RMIT signalled its intent when strikers Will Barclay and Jol Latcham combined for the latter to hammer a low drive across the face of the Heart goal. Barclay and Latcham ran Heart’s defence ragged at times and were constant threats. Heart defender Blake Hicks was forced into a hurried clearance a few minutes later then Heart’s Ryan Monk failed to hold off Barclay whose turn and shot was parried by Heart custodian Sean Skelly. But Heart hit the front in the 26th minute from a superb far post Hicks corner that found central midfielder Daniel Hodge who headed home from point-blank range. That didn’t deter RMIT and within a minute Skelly was forced into a great one-handed save to keep Latcham at bay. RMIT was creating the better chances and in the 36th minute Barclay’s cutback from the left of the area teed up Sam Wood who shot straight at Skelly. Two minutes later scores were level. A mistimed pass by Monk near the halfway line allowed RMIT to hit Heart on the break. Skelly charged off his line and although he smothered Latcham’s first attempt he was stranded when Latcham gathered the rebound and calmly curled it over the big keeper and into the unguarded goal. Six minutes into the second half a superb opportunistic effort from Greening on the turn forced a stunning reaction save from Graham who tipped the goalbound shot onto the post. Monk was forced off through injury in the 62nd minute to be replaced by James Liddle in central defence but that didn’t diminish the threat posed by RMIT’s strike force. Twice in a minute Barclay blew chances to break the deadlock. In the 74th minute he shot wide from the left of the area and in the 75th minute he ballooned his strike from the edge of the box. In the 76th minute Hodge’s header forced Graham to palm the ball wide and in the 82nd minute Graham charged off his line and tripped Greening only for play to be waved on. In the 88th minute RMIT substitute Dan Jones got clear on the right and his cutback was met by
tireless midfielder David O’Reilly whose shot was deflected for a corner. Heart fans erupted in the 90th minute when Greening timed his run perfectly and broke through only for an assistant’s flag to force the referee to give an offside ruling. In the 93rd minute a cross from Hicks on the left found Greening who controlled well then shot low but Graham was able to tip the ball out for a corner. That forced the sides into two 15-minute halves of extra time and players on both sides were feeling the strain. RMIT had reached the final by defeating State 5 West champion North Melbourne Athletic 2-1 after extra time the previous week whereas Heart strolled into the final when semi-final opponent Healesville forfeited. Heart veterans Adam Poole and Simon O’Donnell had soldiered on in the second half of normal time but eventually O’Donnell had to go off and was replaced by Aaron Young. In the first minute of extra time Greening wriggled clear on the left of the area. Rather than cut the ball back to Hodge he decided to shoot from a tight angle and Graham was able to parry. Barclay broke down the right in the 4th minute and cut the ball back for Latcham but Liddle slid in and intercepted and Heart eventually cleared. In the 11th minute of extra time Hicks swung in a corner to the near post which was only cleared to the incoming Poole who mistimed his strike from 10 metres. One minute into the second half of extra time Skelly smothered Barclay’s shot which rebounded off Liddle and the near post before being scrambled clear. The final chance to settle the issue fell to Young who had been played in by Greening but couldn’t finish and the referee’s whistle signalled that penalties would separate the teams. Heart fans grew in confidence knowing Skelly’s reputation as a shot stopper and the lanky keeper didn’t let them down. Chris Smith took the first penalty for RMIT and Skelly sprung to his left and parried the ball wide but Hicks blew that advantage by striking the next penalty straight at Graham. O’Reilly made no mistake and Heart midfielder Cory Osorio did likewise. The decisive moment came when Barclay took the next penalty. He struck the ball firmly enough but again Skelly flung himself to his left and again he parried to give Heart the advantage. It was a cruel blow for Barclay who had clearly been one of RMIT’s best and subsequent penalty conversions from Liddle, RMIT’s Michael Jones, Greening and Dan Jones gave Heart left back Beau Sharpe the opportunity to win the match. As his firm strike hit the back of the net his teammates charged towards him from the halfway line and soon the Heart huddle included players, coaches and fans yelling and rejoicing at the end of a season that will live long in their memories. A season the like of which we may never see again.

The Wright stuff: Jonny Wright with a 95cm snapper he landed at Mount Martha
Spring has sprung and the fish are biting FISHING
By Paul Pingiaro WELL it’s fair to say Melbourne’s spring weather has been very typical. Four season in one day seems to be the norm at the moment, however when the weather gods shine the fishing has been quite good and the good news is it’s only going to get much better. This time of year the majority of anglers focus on snapper. While the large schools of fish are still a few weeks away, it’s very promising to see some great early catches. Anglers fishing off the Rocks at Mt Martha, Mornington and Brighton are catching some nice fish up to 3kg, those that are on the boats are seeing some nice fish up to 5kg, best places are the shallow reefs (5-12m). Best baits are fresh squid and pilchards. With early season fish burley is a must. For those in the boats try Mornington, Mt Eliza, St Kilda and wide off Carrum. Mornington Boat Hire this week reports: “the squid have continued to fire, while the pinkies are slowly starting to show, Jonny managed to land a 95cm snapper! Flathead have been in good numbers and there’s a few nice whiting off Mills Beach”
In Western Port some nice snapper have been getting caught in the North end. Joes Island and Crawfish rock have all produce some lovely fish up to 7kg. Some nice gummy sharks to 15kg have also been caught here as well. Yaringa Boat Harbour this week reported “Snapper to 6kg, gummy sharks to 10kg and squid to 2kg and a lot of size flatties in the channel. Joes’ and Tyabb bank have been the most popular locations. Those heading offshore into Bass Strait have been catching gummy and school shark to 15kg” Those that are looking to bag a few whiting should be looking toward the southern peninsula. Rye to Sorrento has held the most fish, while there are a few nice patches of fish from Mornington to Mt Eliza they are a bit harder to find. Squid this week have continued to be good. Great catches have been had all through the southern peninsula and the top end of Western Port. Boats have been more productive as of late with the squid but as the weather calms down this will even out a bit more. Paul Pingiaro has been a fishing writer for over 15 years and again will be sharing his tips and tricks with us again this season www.morningtonboathire.com.au
