Marching against violence

MARCHERS turned out in force to support White Ribbon Day in Hastings on Friday 25 November.

About 130 people supporting Western Port Takes a Stand carried the banner down High St from the Alfred St Mall to the library.

Afterwards they enjoyed a free barbecue at Hastings Hall.

Speakers included anti-violence campaigner and White Ribbon Ambassador Rosie Batty, former councillor David Garnock and Chris Dawes.

Male ambassadors to the cause were sworn in.

Hastings Respectful Relationships Group, police, emergency services, and Mornington Peninsula Shire Council organised the day.

Protesters call to end cat kill

By Danielle Kutchel ANIMAL advocates are protesting against the number of cats being killed after being held at Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Community Animal Shelter.

Around 25 people from across Melbourne attended the rally on Sunday 20 November at the Watt Rd pound.

Many are in animal rescue groups or advocacy work and used the time to discuss best practice management with colleagues.

The shelter, which holds animals

found wandering on the peninsula, has been criticised for its alleged high-kill rates, barriers to adoption and limited public opening hours.

Rally organiser Rosy Fischer, a former volunteer at the pound, said she spoke out “after witnessing an apparent lack of interest from shelter management in facilitating adoption of unclaimed animals and high kill rates of impounded cats”.

“The rally was to highlight the fact that very few animals are listed for

adoption, the shelter is closed to the public and potential adopters have to go through a long-winded adoption process,” she said.

“These practices make it difficult for animals to be reclaimed or rehomed from the facility and can lead to higher rates of euthanasia.”

The main aim of the rally was to achieve a no-kill shelter, Ms Fischer said.

She said no-kill shelters have a euthanasia rate of 10 per cent or less,

Light’s anti-violence signal MCCRAE lighthouse will be bathed in orange light from dusk to dawn for next few weeks to bring attention to the Victoria Against Violence campaign.

The steel tower, built in 1874, is the tallest lighthouse on mainland Victoria and one of 14 prominent landmarks – and the only one on the Mornington Peninsula – to show off the campaign’s colours.

Disability and Ageing Minister Martin Foley is expected to attend an elder abuse campaign launch at McCrae Yacht Club, 10am, Friday 2 December, as part of the state government’s campaign.

Organisers are hopeful of a grant of $1 million for their work.

The state government launched its second Victoria Against Violence campaign on Thursday 24 November.

Hospital weathers wave of asthma-storm casualties Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au A RECORD number of patients sought treatment at Frankston Hospital’s emergency department after an early evening cool change swept through last Monday.

The thunderstorm asthma event described by senior Melbourne medicos as “a health emergency of unprecedented scale” put emergency medical services under pressure throughout Melbourne.

Six people died and thousands were left gasping for breath after wild winds coincided with a high pollen count.

Such was the scale of the event that Ambulance Victoria was forced to issue an alert on Twitter.

After the weather-driven disaster hit, Frankston Hospital’s emergency department was deluged with 77 patients between 7pm and midnight.

Of these patients, 51 complained of respiratory problems; five were critically unwell; and three were sent to intensive care.

Some of the patients had never experienced asthma before.

There was even a Code Blue alert in the hospital car park – meaning a patient was so badly afflicted by breathing difficulties that he could not walk.

A stretcher was sent out to bring him to casualty.

Others were suffering pre-arrest – not breathing – and required intubation with breathing tubes into their windpipes, or even machine-assisted breathing.

patients instead of the usual 200 in the 24 hours from noon Monday to noon Tuesday.

Emergency doctor Leong Goh, who was in charge of the hospital’s response team, worked through “an exhausting” night from 2pm-5am Tuesday. Other staff stayed back for up to four hours to help cope with the onslaught, going home only if rostered on early next day.

“It was certainly exciting to have such an overwhelming flow of patients,” Dr Goh, a doctor for 25 years, said. “We had a lot of very sick people, especially for asthma.

“It has never been this bad before and really caused a drain on the system.

“I’ve been here 16 years and I’ve never seen such a single big problem.”

Most patients were aged 40 and under, with sufferers of asthma, eczema, hay fever and other allergies, most affected.

Dr Gough said treatments depended on the sickness of the patient. Some needed only Ventolin or steroid tablets to help with breathing.

affected, with only four patients presenting with storm-asthma symptoms.

State Health Department spokesman Bram Alexander said the “complex nature and scale of the event [meant] further comment [was] not appropriate until a cause of death has been attributed for these cases”.

However, if behavioural traits warrant further time, then they either remain in our care or are placed into a ‘home environment’ with a rescue group partner.�

Animals arriving at the shelter are vet checked if ill, or assessed by staff qualified in veterinary nursing, Mr Dobroszczyk said.

He said 80 per cent of dogs were claimed within 24-36 hours, with those unclaimed being vet checked. “The dedicated shelter staff work extremely hard to provide the highest calibre of animal care standards,� he said.

Ms Fischer said she had received threats and abuse on Facebook in the lead up to the protest.

The shire’s environment protection manager David Dobroszczyk said the pound was open to the public by appointment 8.30am-5pm weekdays and 10am-5pm Saturday and Sunday. “Visitors come by appointment only because of occupational health and safety, quarantine and infection control [rules],� he said. “Pets coming in start off in the quarantine facility because their health and ownership status is initially unknown. If they are not claimed within eight days, they move into the shelter.�

Youths linked to three fires

2016 PENINSULA HEALTH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

POLICE believe the same two youths lit grass fires in Somerville, Hastings and Frankston over the weekend.

Although not causing a great deal of damage the fires on Saturday afternoon, 26 November, tied up CFA volunteers and could have spread to neighbouring properties, police say.

Somerville detectives believe there is a link between the offences, with the youths possibly catching a train on the Stony Point line between fires.

Grass was set alight behind a property in Church St, Hastings, 5.40pm, burning down a fence. Hastings CFA crews attended. Witnesses said they saw youths lighting the fires.

A grass fire was lit near George St, behind the Somerville Recreation Centre, 6.30pm. Police later spoke with a 15-year-old youth but no charges were laid.

Earlier, a fire had been lit in a public reserve beside railway tracks at Leawarra Parade, Frankston, 3.304pm.

Detective Senior Sergeant Miro Majstorovic, of Mornington Peninsula CIU, asked that anyone with information on the fires call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.

Packs for refugees MEMBERS of the Flinders branch of Grandmothers’ Against the Detention of Children are filling backpacks with useful items for children being held in detention on Manus Island and Nauru who may be sent to the United States.

The federal government has arranged a refugee swap which may see many of the detained asylum seekers accepted by the US, rather than being settled in Australia.

The Grandmothers’ Against the Detention of Children group is collecting warm socks, beanies, scarfs, drink bottles, books and back packs for those children whose families may meet the resettlement criteria of the US. On Saturday 10 December the peninsula group will join a march from St Paul’s Cathedral, corner Flinders and Swanston streets, Melbourne, at 11.45am across Princes Bridge to the Queen Victoria Gardens opposite the arts centre.

Don’t sacrifice needed services for rate caps

The State Labor Government CPI-linked rate capping for local governments has come into effect.

Unfortunately, many councils have reduced community services and conditions of employment in order to “balance the books�.

Home and community care, children’s services and leisure services not only benefit our most vulnerable residents, but provide employment for a predominately female workforce.

We need to ensure that our newly elected councillors have an understanding of our expected needs in relation to these valuable services.

Submissions for consideration in the development of the shire’s 2017/18 annual budget close 8 December.

The purpose of Labor’s policy, as I understand it, was to rein in wasteful use of money on consultants, meritless projects and senior management remuneration - not spending on essential community services.

Ban beach horses Diane Lewis, Friends of the Hooded Plover, should now turn her attention to having horses banned from using St Andrews Beach (“Dog ban follows years on non-compliance� Letters 15/11/16). I agree wthat our national parks should provide “a safe home for native plants and animals and a place for families to visit, enjoy and learn about the environment�.

The hypocrisy of banning dogs on leads while allowing horses to gallop along the beach is breathtaking. Parks Victoria’s commercial licence that allows horses to use St Andrews Beach is cynical given its motto: Healthy Parks, healthy people.

The galloping of horses near to the sand dunes is damaging to the environment and also impacts on the residential and visitor amenity of this wonderful ocean beach.

Traffic snarl Two places where roadworks have reduced the lanes of traffic from four to effectively two, are along Eastbourne Rd and along Point Nepean Rd, Rye. Common sense would say we need more lanes to accommodate the ever increasing traffic of the area, especially over holiday periods where we now see gridlock on all roads of the southern peninsula region. As we now see, Peninsula Link is also at a standstill much of the time during holidays.

Why is Mornington Peninsula Shire hell bent on creating an even larger traffic jam? Try asking the shire and all one gets is silence. No one from the shire nor any councillor is talking, so I am left to make an assumption.

We are fully aware that the shire has for many years been pushing for the extension of the freeway from Jetty Rd through to Melbourne Rd to ease congestion in the Rosebud and Rye areas. Clearly an incentive is needed for the state government to fund this extension, so why not create a bigger traffic Jam in the area and then ask again that the government fast tracks the freeway extension as it is now a massive traffic bottleneck.

Will the “new� councillors be far more open than the previous lot or will they be gagged by the shire hierarchy? Surely ratepayers are entitled to know exactly what the shire is planning

Put safety first The proposal by Mornington Peninsula Shire to reduce the speed limit from 80kph to 70kph for a distance of 6.3 kilometres on Melbourne Rd between Rye and Sorrento is not tackling the critical safety issues along Melbourne Rd, which are the bushfire danger potential and restricted visibility due to the failure of either the shire or VicRoads to clear the excessive trees and vegetation along the road reserve.

This leads to a significant reduction in visibility for the drivers of cars seeking to enter Melbourne Rd from the side streets and, for the drivers of other vehicles on Melbourne Rd, to see these vehicles, which I suspect is a major factor in accidents.

The wide road reserve of Melbourne Rd will fail to act as a fire break when the inevitable bushfire in Mornington Peninsula National Park crosses Melbourne Rd and destroys houses and property on both sides of the road, when it ought to be the major opportunity for a natural fire break and provide access for emergency services.

Melbourne Rd is a well-engineered road, relatively straight on a wide road reservation

which has recently had roundabouts constructed at the major intersections. There are no schools or commercial developments (except one on a roundabout), and is perfectly suitable for speeds of 80kph and a reduction in the speed limit may increase the traffic flow on Point Nepean Rd. Speed limits are meant to be set according to the road conditions, not for pseudo political purposes.

A safety action plan for both road users and residents of this part of the peninsula would, before taking any action on speed limits, be for the shire to significantly clear out the vegetation and some of the trees to reduce the extreme fire risk on Melbourne Rd reserve.

Who’s in control?

Sorry, but have I missed something. I don’t recall having elected Mornington Peninsula Shire CEO Carl Cowie as the ratepayers’ spokesperson to advise our new councillors on what they can and can’t do [as outlined in the shire’s “Councillor and staff interactions policy�] .

How can we expect our elected councillors to make an informed decision on any matter before them if bureaucrats such as Mr Cowie and governance manager Joe Spiteri can decide what information they can be given - if any.

Op shop out to help veterans

The Local Government Act, together with common courtesy, sets the standards for workplace relationships between councillors and council staff.

Council officers should remember they are paid by ratepayers. They should also realise councillors are the elected representatives of the ratepayers.

Let’s hope this new council made up of new and past members has the strength and fortitude to ask the appropriate questions and demand the appropriate response from council officers so they can make informed decisions.

On the past form of council I, quite frankly, don’t fancy their chances.

CARRY On Victoria’s welfare centre in Hastings offers service veterans and their families financial assistance and counselling advice.

There is also a chill-out room where veterans can relax in a quiet, safe environment.

The Op Shop, at 2/61 Cool Store Rd, Hastings, opens 10am-3pm Tuesday to Friday, and 10am-1pm Saturdays. Profits from sold donated goods go to veterans.

The ex-service organisation has provided welfare assistance to veterans and their families since 1932. “We used to do it secretly as veterans are very proud and usually don’t ask for assistance and, in that regard, the modern veterans haven’t changed,� peninsula branch leader Karl Williams said. “The op shop and welfare centre is the first of its kind for Carry On after its board recognised that ‘assistance by stealth’ meant no one knew of our organisation.�

Boat ramp advice The biggest mistake being made by Capel Sound Foreshore Committee is that it has been clearing the ramp of sand and stacking it on each side of the ramp. They have run out of room and extended the beach out to sea but the ramp cannot go out with the sand and again gets covered with sand.

The foreshore committee should have noticed that the ramp has been getting harder to keep clean. This year it has had to close one ramp so it can used to stack.

The only way the committee is going to be able to keep control over the sand movements is to stack it on the east side of the ramp and have it removed no later than July of each year, not like mid-November this year.

When all the sand has been removed, the committee has to spread enough grade two or grade three top soil over that area to stop the sand from going over Point Nepean Rd and into Burdett St. With 4000 launchings a season must be returning the committee something like $50,000 to $55,000 dollars a year.

Service offers ‘lift’ to drivers and vehicles Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au MOTORISTS who continue to drive while over 0.05 per cent are often certain they “won’t get caught” and can best avoid accidents by driving slowly.

They ignore the risks while maintaining that it is more convenient, cheaper and quicker to take their chances than seeking alternative transport.

Many blame alcohol for reducing their inhibitions and responsible decision-making.

But the possible dangers for them and other road users is high, and the costs – after getting pulled over – far outweigh any presumed savings.

These confronting findings emerged from a nation-wide online survey (Facebook, Twitter and Linked-In) by designated driver service WeDrive Australia, which is becoming increasingly popular on the Mornington Peninsula.

A follow up pilot study of 300 people has drawn positive feedback from clients who found the app-based service to be a useful alternative to driving – not only for locals but also for city visitors to the peninsula’s wineries and weddings.

CEO Yan Flageul designed the service after losing a friend to a drunken driver. It gives tipsy drivers the option of being driven home in their own car, without the inconvenience of having to retrieve it next morning – thus reducing their temptation to drink and drive.

The company now has around 200 drivers nationally and claims to be the first designated driver service to use phone apps. Its clients have direct access to an automated booking service, and can search for the first available team of drivers or book a trip in advance.

Somerville man Ian Birch has been a designated driver for just over 12 months and is delighted with how it supplements his income. He does four or five jobs on Fridays and Saturdays with a partner, and can make $200$300 on a weekend, depending on the

distances he drives.

After being contacted via the app the pair arrange to drive clients to their homes from hotels, parties, and a range of functions in their own cars, with the partner following in his own car.

Rates are a minimum $60 for a driver and co-driver for the first 10 kilometres, and then $3 a kilometre.

A typical fare of 20km would be $90 – with clients secure in the knowledge that their cars will be safely parked in the driveways next morning.

Clients pay by credit card, similar to

Uber, and the drivers carry no cash.

“It’s surprising how many fares are under 10 kilometres,” Mr Birch said.

Adaptability is the key, with many fancy European cars having indicators and wipers on the “wrong” side, as well as manual gear boxes.

“It’s often a challenge talking to the clients as well as driving their cars home at the same time,” he said.

“You can go from a late model BMW to a 14-year-old Honda CRV in one night; anything might pop up.”

Clients may ask to be driven anywhere in Melbourne, as well as all

over the peninsula. “One good job was to Torquay driving a beautiful old Jag, and another is for one of our regulars, who we drive all the way from Mt Eliza to Blackburn.”

Drinking at home is a no-no – and never while he is on the roster. “I don’t drink anyway,” he said. “But it would be impractical because you really have to concentrate.

“Anyway, that’s the whole point of the service: it’s what we are against,” he said.

Clients often see the benefits of the service while being driven home.

“I’ve driven through booze buses many times and, on one occasion, the car in front was pulled in while we were waved through.

“The client said, “That car would have been me.”

While some fares are irksome simply because alcohol is involved, others are a joy. “On one memorable job I drove four delightful young ladies around Yarra Valley wineries for eight hours and really enjoyed it.”

Another favourite fare was driving a busload of businessmen to the Buchan Cup and hobnobbing with guests in a stylish marquee. “It was a two-day trip and I didn’t have to pay for a thing,” Mr Birch said.

The associated costs WeDrive’s its fee and the co-driver pays for his own petrol.

“The money is good but the knowledge that you are doing a good turn is important, too,” Mr Birch said.

“One night I drove a mum and dad home with their three children in their own safety seats and they were very grateful and it felt good.”

Fire prevention works

Training for new year’s surfing MEMBERS of the Disabled Surfers’ Association Mornington Peninsula donned wetsuits and took to the water at Point Leo to practice and improve their skills in preparation for next year’s three events.

The skill improvement morning was conducted by Ash Gardner, Stewart Lockie and Gary Morton, with Jenny Anglis-Goodall volunteering as the group’s “crash test dummy”.

A new surfboard for event days was also trialled.

Sports for all MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire will celebrate International Day of People with Disability by holding a come-and-try sports day and miniexpo at Civic Reserve, Mornington, 10am–1pm Wednesday 7 December.

International Day of People with Disability aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability.

Activities on the day will include tennis, gymnastics, soccer, netball, footy, dance, table tennis and SWISH (blind table tennis).

PARKS Victoria is conducting its annual summer fuel reduction program to maintain fuel breaks and fire access tracks, slash grass and remove weeds on public land.

Prevention work is being done in 16 parks on the Mornington Peninsula and around Western Port.

These include Mornington Peninsula, Point Nepean and Arthurs Seat state parks, Bald Hill and Buckley nature conservation reserves, Coolart Heritage Reserve, Crib Point and Tyabb bushland reserves, Devilbend and Warneet natural features reserves, French Island National Park, Kangerong and Main Ridge nature conservation reserves, Langwarrin and The Pines flora and fauna reserves, and Tubbarubba Reserve.

“Fire can spread quickly and our work to reduce fuel loads is an important part of managing the landscape in urban areas,” Parks’ senior manager fire and emergency operations Anthony Maxwell said.

“It’s important for residents to understand that we cut grass when it is nearly ‘cured’ – almost dried out – to avoid regrowth during the hot, dry months.”

The Western Port Whisperer

THE Whisperer received a huge shock when Mrs Whisperer was driving down Mornington- Tyabb Road the other morning and noticed a speed reduction from 100km/h to 80km/h.

Fortunately, she has a beautiful brake foot like Rhonda, and was able to slow down to match the new signs.

On the way home in the afternoon, Mrs Whisperer was tooted for going too slow, because the new signs had been replaced with the old signs and we were allowed to travel at 100km/h again.

The Whisperer can’t help but point out the irony of VicRoads conducting a period of consultation

with the public about speed limits, when clearly the change will be inevitable.

The Whisperer is not necessarily anti change, but wishes public consultation would happen as part of the decision process, not just to make the organisation look good. *** MRS Whisperer is currently going through a mid- life crisis.

This isn’t necessarily a problem, except for the fact she has had about seven of these events in the last decade.

Private Leonard Wilding killed in France Compiled by Cameron McCullough WORD has been received that Private Leonard Wilding was killed in action in France, on the 26th of October last. Pte. Wilding was well known in this district, having carried on the business of estate agent for some years previous to enlisting, residing at Bittern, and later on at Frankston.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the widow who is left to mourn her sad loss. *** MRS Hewison was the winner of the cigar band table which was raffled at the Somerville Fete last Saturday, holding ticket No 8. *** MESSRS Alex Scott and Co. will hold their monthly sale at Tanti on Monday next, when they will have a full yarding of stock and sundries to dispose of. *** MESSRS T. R. B. Morton and Son will offer for sale at Tanti on Monday next at 2 o’clock on the ground a splendid block of ground, containing 3 acres, opposite the hotel and sale yards, under instructions from the Equity Trustees Executors and Agency Co Ltd. The title is good and the terms are liberal. *** IN giving a report of a social evening held at Moorooduc on the 10th inst in order to bid good-bye to Miss Green, the local postmistress an error occurred.

Besides being a beautiful car in appearance, it is also easy-riding and comfortable, and should give every satisfaction on the road. *** A CRICKET match has been arranged between the officers and staff, Langwarrin Camp versus Frankston Cricket Club at Langwarrin on Saturday 2nd December 1916.

All intending players from Frankston are asked to assemble at the Pharmacy (late Colonial Bank) Corner, in time to catch the cabs leaving for he camp at 1.45.

The visiting players will be the guests of the officers for tea. *** WE are requested to call attention to an advertisement in another column

produced a magnificent programme of pictures that eclipsed anything that has been screened locally.

Charlie Chaplin, as usual, created the fun and the acting of Miss Mabel Maguire (boy’s part) in the “Baby Bride” was excellent.

We hope to see more of her in later programmes.

The Indian films, depicting the hunter’s life and dangers held the interest of the audience from start to finish.

The programme concluded with ‘Australia at War’, 8,000 ft. long. It showed the necessity of preparation, the various stages of men and munitions and bombs.

Those who were fortunate enough, to see the picture, realised that before a nation can go to war, preparation is necessary on a large and complete scale.

This Friday we are to have “The Curse of a Nation”, a picture which presents a modern problem that must be faced fairly and squarely by the people.

It is featured by William Farnum, America’s most popular young actor, givine a sublime performance of the self-sacrificing hero, Phillip Morrow.

Under the masterful directorship of Edgar Lewis, the enthralling drama works out to the proportions of a mighty epic of Modern American Life, dealing as it does with the gravest social, moral and political, conditions.

Before Messrs C. G. Williams and S. Sherlock J’s.P. DISORDERLY WEEKENDERS Walter Lee, charged by Constable Ryan with being drunk and disorderly at the Frankfort Railway Station, on Saturday night, November 25th, pleaded guilty.

As defendant had been it the lockup over Sunday he was let off with a fine of 5s or 4 hours imprisonment.

As a result of a disturbance among visitors to the town on Sunday 26th Nov., John Richard Johansen, of St Kilda, who had been arrested

by Const. Ryan on two charges of unlawful assault, and one charge of offensive behaviour, was remanded to appear at Frankston Court on 11th December.

THE MEANING OF EXISTENCE... AND OTHER SHORT STORIES

Between ‘The Rock’ and a hard place

By Stuart McCullough THIS is an outrage. It defies common and uncommon sense alike and I demand a recount. More than that, I demand an answer. For this is the greatest affront to democracy since John Gorton voted against himself and lost the job as Prime Minister. I don’t know where to start. Tell the media. Alert the Supreme Court. Demonstrate in the streets because this travesty must not be allowed to stand. Because, when all is said and done, I simply refuse to accept the result. I cannot concede that Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson is now the ‘Sexiest Man Alive’.

Should I blame the indecipherable peculiarities of the Electoral College system? Or, instead, should I simply heed the advice of popular music and blame it, if not on the bosa nova, then most certainly on the boogie? Presumably these events must have occurred whilst my back was turned. I certainly don’t recall voting for him. But now it’s done, there seems to be little, if anything, anyone can do about it.

I’ll admit, I’m not altogether sure what privileges come with the title ‘Sexiest Man Alive’. Whether it includes the nuclear security codes and diplomatic immunity or simply an automatic invitation to next year’s TV Week Logie Awards with complimentary showbag stuffed full of hard to get goodies like ‘The Bert Newton Exfoliating Sponge-Stick’ or a celebrity swear jar, signed by the cast of ‘The Block’, is probably best left to the imagination. But, chances are, a title like that is at least worth one of those ‘VIP’ stickers for the drivethrough at McDonalds. It’s hard not

to be a little jealous.

As mysterious and puzzling a decision as this may be - on par with crop circles and alien abduction - it begins to make a little more sense when you

consider the circumstances. First of all, you don’t simply get handed an award like ‘Sexiest Man Alive’; you have to take it from someone else. And, this year, the person to be dethroned as

world-champion all-round sexy guy is none other than David Beckham. All I can say to this stunning turn of events is: good. Other than be David Beckham, I can’t think of one thing he’s done to justify keeping the title.

Details as to how these things are decided are, to put it mildly, sketchy.

You’d like to think that there was some level of integrity and that the folks responsible for the Brownlow might somehow be involved. That the title is not decided by awarding between one and three votes for each week is a loss for all involved. It causes people to question the veracity of the whole thing. Greater transparency would be a good start as, clearly, the system is not without its flaws, as previous decisions to bestow the honour on Adam Levine and Jude Law no doubt attest.

In an ideal world, I’d like to think that the title passed from Dave to Dwayne not as a result of a penalty shoot-out or canvas-rattling bout of wrestle mania gone berserk but some kind of battle of wits. Or, if that were too short a contest, perhaps by determining whose eyebrows can perform the most outstanding syncopated dance routine to ‘Uptown Funk’.

Whatever their shortcomings, they each possess a remarkable set of eyebrows. Limber too.

I suppose I’m reflecting on all of this because it was my birthday the other week. And, fact is, Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson and I are the same age. (So too is Snoop Doggy Dogg, although his strict use of a high-quality antiageing cream means that he hides it well. Fo’ shizzle.) When the birthday candles are extinguished and the waft-

ing, waxy smoke begins to clear, it’s hard not to reflect on life, the Rock and the Universe. At this rate, the Rock is on track to be one of the all time great Dwaynes. Despite the substantial handicap that is being named ‘Dwayne’, the Rock has just been crowned ‘Sexiest Man Alive’. I, it is fair to say, am still some distance off achieving that goal.

Dwayne may be a Hollywood star, but he started out not so far from here, having spent part of his childhood living in Auckland. Presumably this means that he’s eligible to play for the All Blacks whenever he likes. He’s a third generation wrestler too which, frankly, is a lot of men in tights for one family. Christmas must be quite the occasion as various generations launch themselves from the top rope into the present pile at the base of the tree. That’s not so different from what goes on at our house. It’s not so hard to imagine that, in a ‘sliding doors’ kind of way (but without the inconvenience of Gwyneth Paltrow) that the Rock and I could well have been friends.

I’d like to reconsider. Forget jealousy. I am flat-out delighted that one of my peers has been awarded such a prestigious honour. So best wishes, Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson; wrestler, actor, author and the most gifted athlete never to start at fly-half for New Zealand. May your reign be magnanimous and feel free to use your Presidential veto stamp as often as you like.

You winning ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ is far from the strangest thing to happen in the last few weeks. I, for one, will be cheering for you. stuart@stuartmccullough.com

Kangas in the box seat PROVINCIAL

By IT Gully LANGWARRIN is in the box seat to win its match against Moorooduc in round five of MPCA Provincial cricket after having yet another good day in the field.

The Kangaroos fielding and bowling has been a key to them sitting in the top four and it was at the forefront of their performance again on Saturday.

The Ducs were bowled out for 155, Shamith Kannangara the top scorer with 38 after he was dropped on 30.

Brett Wilson opened with 33 and David Greensmith put together 20.

The home side just couldn’t put together a partnership (highest was 24),

losing wickets consistently throughout the innings.

All five Langwarrin bowlers picked up wickets, Matt Campbell the pick of them with 4/41, while skipper Trav Campbell snared 2/31 from 13 overs.

In reply, Langwarrin is looking strong at 1/65 with Simon McEvoy on 23 and Joel Bateman 22.

A top order collapse and some terrible mix ups running between wickets has Mornington on the back foot against Baxter.

The Doggies had four run outs in the innings and had only three players really contribute to the scoreboard.

Mornington lost their first three wickets cheaply before skipper Matt Foon once against restored some order.

Together with Charlie Parker, Foon helped to put on 100-plus runs. The skipper scoring 67 and Parker 64, while Brad Lynch played a significant role with 41.

However, four wickets for less than 10 runs didn’t help matters at the end of the innings.

Chris Brittain was the best of the Baxter bowlers with 4/29 from 8.4 overs, while Ben Brittain claimed 2/32.

Baxter is 0/16 in reply.

Peninsula Old Boys have set Pearcedale a healthy 267 for victory in their match at Peninsula School.

Keeper Wade Pelzer was again in the runs with 103, while skipper Matty Hyden scored 77 and Jon Forrest 35.

Kaine Smith was the best of the

Panther’s bowlers with 5/83 off 21.2 overs, giving him 18 wickets for the season.

Sorrento is staring at a rare victory after bowling out Long Island for 158.

The Sharks haven’t been great with the bat either this season so one might suggest that this game is far from over.

Peter Connell top scored with 33 for the Islanders, Aaron Paxton hit 29 and Stuart Swift 26 to help the home team reach 158.

Rob Parslow was the best of the Sorrento bowlers with 3/32 from 20 overs, CJ King picked up 2/49 and Liam O’Conner snared 2/19.

Mt Eliza is just 39 runs away from

victory after destroying Pines.

The Piners batted first and were rolled for 88, Ashley Hupe scoring 28 and Rhys Chalkley 21 at the top of the innings.

Somerville scored 232 in its match against Crib Point.

Sean Parker top scored for the Eagles at the top of the innings with 60, Brad Rossborough scored 48, as did Leigh Lowry and Jarryd Bailey was solid with 37.

Glenn Barclay was the pick of the bowlers with 3/90 from 30.3 overs.

The Hillmen bounce back DISTRICT

By IT Gully RED Hill bounced back on the first day of its round five match against Main Ridge at Red Hill Reserve.

The Hillmen were less than average against Mt Martha in the last round, giving up top spot on the ladder, however, the home side hit back against the Ridge on Saturday.

Red Hill rolled the visitors for just 103, Lincoln Toy the destroyer with 4/12 from 10.3 overs, while Glenn Collett was at his best also with 2/31 from 20 overs.

Simon Dart is always in the game and his 2/12 was important.

In reply, the HIllmen are cruising at 1/64, Dart unbeaten on 37 and Andrew Mock 19 not out.

Mt Martha continues its early-season domination, racking up 7/279 against Seaford Tigers.

Riley Shaw scored his second ton on the trot, eventually run out on 108 and scoring 100 against Red Hill.

Alex Mason was also solid at three with 47 and Brett Wilkinson scored 64 to help the Reds past 250.

The Tigers used seven bowlers, Luke Chevalier getting 2/31 and David James 2/38. Max Watters toiled hard for a return of 1/67 from 19 overs.

An 87 from Jon Guthrie flattered another inconsistent batting performance from Delacombe Park against Seaford.

Rob Fisher scored 39 and Craig Bright 28 for the home side, eventually helping the Parkers to 221 on a small deck.

Seaford is 1/23 in reply.

Boneo has started well in its run chase against Baden Powell.

The Braves batted first and made 242.

Justin Moore was one of seven bowlers used by skipper Leigh Janssen and he responded with 3/27. Janssen himself claimed 2/68 and Ryan Jellie picked up 2/25.

In reply, the Pandas are looking strong at 1/59, Chris Jobling not out on 29 and Moore unbeaten on 19.

Rye has already lost a wicket in its run chase against Flinders.

Flinders batted first and declared with eight overs left in the day at 9/226. Waide Symes was unbeaten on 58 and Dwayne Field was not out 22. Tim Clements was the only other player to get runs with 39.

Dean Collins and Matt Travena each picked up three wickets for the Demons.

Rye faced the final eight overs of the day and lost Beau Suffern. The Demons will resume at 1/11.

Rosebud has set Heatherhill 218 for victory in their match at Olympic Park.

Jason Mathers was the chief run scorer for the Buds with 59, while skipper Billy Quigley scored 34, Pete Doughty 34 and Brian Doughty hit 33.

Blues set up outright win SUB-DISTRICT

By IT Gully HASTINGS will be keen to pick up an outright win on the second day of its match against Carrum Downs in MPCA Sub District cricket.

The Blues bowled out the Cougars for just 62 runs in 27.3 overs on Saturday. Luke Hewitt set Thomas Barclay Oval alight with 6/22 from 13.3 overs, including seven maidens.

Mitch Floyd did the damage at the other end with 2/19 from eight overs.

Jordy Watters was the highest run scorer for the Cougars with 19, while David Dervan with 13 was the only on player to reach double figures.

In reply, the Blues are cruising at 4/153 after skipper Robbie Hearn opened with 89. Devlin Webb is unbeaten on 35.

Twelve wickets fell on the opening day of the match between Frankston YCW and Ballam Park.

The Knights’ bowlers did a good job with the ball to remove the Stonecats for 134, however, they are reeling at

4/54 and 6/92 before Millar and Harnett put on 61.

Jye Voelkl was the standout bowler for the Hoppers with 5/33 from 16.2 overs.

Balnarring has some work to do with the bat after Carrum scored 256.

John Mitchell (36) and Hayden Moulton (41), opened with 77 while Josh Dent hit 68 before he was run out.

Lachy Dobson also chipped in with 27 late in the day.

Geoff Bradshaw, Nathan Kleinig and Anthony Wilson all snared two

A handy 51 to Todd Harnett late on the day helped the Frogs to a competitive total. Jake Millar was also solid with 48. At one stage Tootgarook was

Skye is every chance to pick up an unlikely win against Tyabb, who were bowled out for 156.

The Yabbies struggled with the bat.

Michael Edwards again got a start but couldn’t make the most of it, caught off the bowling of Jordan Keher for a team-high 36.

Ben Milano was sensational for Skye with 6/39 from 19 overs.

A young life being lived to the full on court BASKETBALL

By Jarrod Potter WHEN your first word is “ball”, a life on court is probably in the making.

Tom Bahen, 14, a Western Port junior, has been basketball-crazy his whole life.

There’s no other way to describe a Frankston kid who was bouncing a basketball before he was walking and telling everyone about his sporting passion.

But his isn’t the textbook tale of rising through the ranks and dominating at every turn.

He hasn’t been in the Jamboree mix. He hasn’t featured in Southern Cross Challenge yet.

Realistically, he has never been on “the pathway”.

Instead, his first foray at a Basketball Victoria Country try-out proved positive after going to Shepparton with faint hopes ... but left with an invitation to the BVC National Intensive Training Program (NITP).

“It feels pretty good, it’s hard to explain; it just feels like you’re being noticed,” Bahen said. “First time [in BVC Pathway program] I’ve done a tournament through Western Port when we went to the BVC champs and we won one game – but that’s the only thing I’ve done.

“A couple of my mates have done Vic Metro and I really wanted to play for the state, so my parents were looking at Vic Country and that was what they decided on and I liked the idea.”

While travelling from the peninsula up to Shepparton, nerves struck the versatile Steeler. “I definitely wanted to do it this year, but I was getting pretty nervous,” Bahen said.

“I was nervous warming up but, as soon as we started playing, they all went away and I started playing normally.

“It was pretty tough going for six hours but really good as I learnt tonnes, because I’ve never done it before.

“I’m glad that I put my name out there – obviously it’s worked – but learning all the different plays was great.”

Bahen is a classic junior prospect: he plays guard, but is tall enough to cover any position and hopes to find more opportunities to drive the play if

his name is called out for bigger and better duties in the months to come.

“I love playing a guard position – point guard to shooting guard – but because I’m kind of tall for my age, I play 1-5 - point guard to centre,” Bahen said. “I love playing guard because I love being a leader on the

court and a leader of the team.”

The rapid rise is paving the way for Bahen to dream big – he doesn’t want to stop at a Vic Country jersey … he wants to work hard and push his way into the junior green-and-gold.

“I’d like to end up playing for the state,” Bahen said. “Definitely want to play in the ACJBC – like to get through that and play state against the rest of the country.

“My end goal though is to definitely try and play for the under-17 Australian team.”

VJBL, school ball with Elisabeth Murdoch College and running out for Western Port in last year’s CBL competition in the development squad keeps his schedule busy. But Bahen wants to take any opportunity at any time – he’s that hungry to improve.

Bahen thanks his coaching mentor Kenny Brunner for everything he’s done to push the young Steeler along and inspire his basketball ambitions.

“Kenny Brunner – he’s taught me more than anyone else and is probably my inspiration to keep playing,” Bahen said.

“Not just for Western Port but basketball in general because of the things he teaches me and I want in the end for him to be my coach.

“We talk about things like life lessons and things to do with basketball as well.”

The aim of the NITP is to identify and select outstanding basketball athletes 14-17 to an NITP squad and develop their mental skills, individual skills and team concepts which will aid them to compete successfully at national and international levels.

Honda NSX named Road & Track Performance Car of the Year THE Honda NSX has been named Road & Track’s 2017 Performance Car of the Year, besting eight of the world’s finest sports cars by exhibiting a potent mix of performance, style and emotion.

The Honda NSX won this year’s competition largely thanks to its unique driving experience. According to the feature in Road & Track, “For the first time in a hybrid automobile of any price or capability, technology has been placed firmly in the service of emotional involvement rather than in place of it.”

The magazine goes on to say, “Everything about the car – from the way in which the brake-by-wire pedal lengthens its travel when the brakes are hot to the manner in which the mid-mounted V6 permits itself a bit of the ol’ barbaric yawp when it’s winding out in fourth gear – is intended to enhance the driver’s involvement.”

“Every aspect of the new NSX – acceleration, braking and cornering – is a precise, new experience,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of Acura.

“Having the NSX recognised by Road & Track’s esteemed group of evaluators is not only a great honour for the car, but a testament to the skill, determination and challenging spirit of our team – we are immensely proud.”

Now in its fifth year, Road & Track’s Performance Car of the Year award is chosen based on testing that takes place over the course of four

days, two of which are dedicated to the back roads of Kentucky and Tennessee, and two of which are spent on track at the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

To be considered for the competition, cars need to be brand new or significantly revised for 2016. During the four-day testing process, the Road & Track editors and writers evaluate each car based on a combination of emotion, performance and value.

For the performance evaluation, editors take note of acceleration, braking, handling, shift points, sound level and weight, accounting for the weather conditions present during testing. They also evaluate the engine, transmission, drivetrain, steering, tyres and brakes.

The 2017 Honda NSX launched in the spring, challenging conventional supercar thinking with a three-motor, 427 kW, twin-turbocharged Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive

(SH-AWD) powertrain. Produced exclusively at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio, the Honda NSX is the only supercar manufactured in America.

What I do: As a Weddings Coordinator my duties include taking the brides for tours around the venue, organising the wedding day running sheet per bride’s request and ensuring all attendee information is correct for the kitchen and seating. On the day of the wedding I assist with setting the ceremony site, styling the reception area, ensure the wedding is running to schedule and that food and beverage service is completed appropriately.

What I’ve done: I have worked with a range of catering companies, gaining experience in the tourism and hospitality industry. For the past 18

months I have worked for Lindenderry at Red Hill as a Food and Beverage Assistant, and have recently began working as the Weddings Coordinator. I am currently also studying a Bachelor of Culinary Management.

What I’ve learned: I now understand order of service, how to provide excellent service, stock control measures, how to coordinate a wedding prior to and on the day, and have gained knowledge of different food and wine.

Here I married my favourite person while building a massage business.

What I’ve learned: Just sing your unique song and
