Brazen burglar tackled By Chris Brennan A HASTINGS man received a big shock when he found an intruder inside his home, fighting off and injuring the would-be burglar, who is thought to be responsible for a spate of breakins across the town, including on the day of Dermot O’Toole’s funeral. The Hilltop Rise resident confronted the intruder inside his house around 10pm last Saturday, tackling him to the ground and injuring his arm. The brazen criminal was able to break free and flee. Police believe the burglar may be also responsible for a series of breakins at shops in the town centre the previous evening, including Dick Smith, IGA, The Star Bakery, CJs Fish and Chips and a salon in Victoria St. “Video footage shows a male aged in his early 20s and quite tall - at least 183cm – with a medium to solid build committing the offences,” Detective sergeant Ron Fauvel of Hasting Crime Investigation Unit said. “A male offender with a similar description entered a home in Hilltop rise via an unlocked door; he was confronted by the owner and a struggle ensued. It is believed the offender may have received an arm injury.” The News received reports from a resident in Lyall St whose home was

broken into during broad daylight on Monday, while the adjoining Maritime Union of Australia house in Marine Pde was also hit about the same time. The homeowner said jewellery and some cash had been stolen during the robbery, which took place sometime between 11am and 3pm. In the MUA break-in, a window was smashed and a drinks machine “jimmied” open, however there was no money inside and the intruder escaped empty handed. The thief then appears to have taken advantage of the funeral of murdered jewellery shop owner Dermot O’Toole on Tuesday to target another home in Villawood Drive. While the Hasting’s community celebrated the life of Mr O’Toole, who died fighting off an armed robber. The burglary suspect captured on CCTV camera breaking into High St shops was wearing wearing a white T-shirt with a black motif, multi-coloured shorts and white shoes. Detective Fauvel said anyone with information of a male fitting the suspect’s description that might have suffered an arm injury last weekend, or who had witnessed anything suspicious in the area at the time of the burglaries, should call Hasting CIU on 5970 7850 or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
