Mobile minister: Flinders MP Greg Hunt began his 500km charity walk around his electorate on Monday. He sees the walk as part of his role as both a local MP and Health Minister. And, right on cue, his mobile phone range as soon as Mr Hunt and supporters started the trek at Rosebud. First stop was nearby Padua College, one of 50 schools he plans to visit during his 17 days on the road. Picture: Gary Sissons
MP walks, talks for a good cause Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au FLINDERS MP Greg Hunt took the first steps on a planned 500 kilometre walk on Monday. The walk around his Flinders electorate will no doubt be a welcome change to the past few months in Canberra which saw him fail to attain the deputy leadership in the bid for the top job by Peter Dutton. In the turmoil that followed, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was eventually replaced as the leader of the Liberals, and Australia, by former treasurer Scott Morrison.
Both Mr Hunt and Mr Dutton were subsequently reappointed to their respective portfolios – health for Mr Hunt and home affairs Mr Dutton – by their new leader, Mr Morrison. But the reverberations of the coup and its outcome continued with the loss of the Wentworth, Mr Turnbull’s old seat, in a by-election, to independent Kerryn Phelps. The same set of circumstances sees the now-retired-from-politics Mr Turbull dispatched to Bali this week by Mr Morrison to help explain to Indonesia the Australian government’s decision during the by-election to reassess its previous opposition to recognising Jerusalem as the capital

of Israel. The US took that step in December last year. Mr Hunt’s 29 October – 16 November walk to raise money for the Abacus Learning Centre and Light Up Autism Foundation is described by his media officer Mathew Langdon as a “formal work event”. “In fact, rather than taking time off or leave, it involves continuous electorate and portfolio work over weekdays and weekends”. The journey will see Mr Hunt visit 50 schools, described by Mr Langdon as “a core part of the duties of any MP” and probably a record in such a short time by “any member of parliament in their electorate at federal or
state level”. “If the minister were on leave he could not appropriately visit schools and not continue portfolio business,” Mr Langdon said. “It is in fact perhaps the most intense formal work period of his term. Indeed, he could be criticised for visiting schools other than in his official capacity. “In short, the office anticipates that for the 18 days of the walk, including consecutive weekends, the minister will work approximately 16 hours a day both on the walk, constituent duties and portfolio responsibilities.” Mr Hunt’s first 500km walk around his electorate in 2004 raised $65,000 for diabetes research; in 2007 more
than $55,000 was raised again for diabetes research; a third walk in 2011 raised $35,000 for the Abacus Learning Centre in Hastings and Autism Victoria; and in 2015 $75,000 was raised for the Abacus Learning Centre and Amaze (Autism Victoria). Anyone can join Mr Hunt on any part of the walk by calling his electorate office on 5977 9082 to discuss where and when to meet him. A sausage sizzle will be held to mark the walk’s end at 5pm Friday 16 November at the Abacus Learning centre, 74 Victoria Street, Hastings. Tender rules tighten to ban gifts to staff Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au CONTRACT managers at Mornington Peninsula Shire have been banned from accepting “gifts, benefits or hospitality” from companies or individuals supplying the tens of millions of dollars in goods or services bought each year by the shire. The shire has tightened up the rules to avoid conflicts of interest between staff and suppliers following internal audits and receipt of a probity report of its buying and contract procedures. Gifts that have been offered and declined must be recorded in the staff gift register. Staff and advisors directly involved with any tender evaluation panel will need to declare “any relationships or connections they currently have, or previously had, to tenders or their employees”. Declarations in the Related and Conflict of Interest Register would be reviewed by “procurement” and assessed in consultation with “probity” officers.
A report to council’s Tuesday 23 October meeting by strategic procurement manager Gail Mifsud stated that the signed declaration “is to mitigate the person determining the status of their own interest”. If a conflict of interest is found the staff member concerned must be taken off the tender evaluation panel and have no further access to tender information. A member of the shire’s “executive team” could allow the staff member to remain in the panel “if the interest is considered minor or unlikely to influence the evaluation outcome”. The gifts register – available to the public by appointment – lists an “exclusive photographic session voucher” valued at $600 as being declined by a contracts procurement coordinator. A Mornington car sales company made the offer. The shire’s contract auditing and surveillance officer also declined an identical offer. However, two “lunch” meetings valued at $20 and $25 with Procurement Australia were accepted while an invitation to Derby Day was declined.
Five stars for councillors MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire councillors have given themselves the right to stay in fivestar accommodation. An amendment to the Councillor Expenses Reimbursement, Resources and Facilities Policy adopted at the Tuesday 23 October council meeting allows councillors to be reimbursed for “accommodation at a five star venue when they are also attending a conference or event in their official capacity at the same five star venue”. A report by senior policy advisor Anthea
Hastie said it was “important that the councillor role attracts and retains a wide cross section of people and the policy recognises individual needs and circumstance”. The policy being amended was adopted on 24 July and will be reviewed by council at the next municipal election, October 2020. Ms Hastie said the policy change “will allow councillors to be provided with appropriate reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses performing their duties as a councillor”.

In rhythm with farmers’ needs FLINDERS came alive to the sounds of Rhythms for Rain, Sunday 21 October, an event organised by Rob Lindsay to help drought-hit farmers. Lions Club of Flinders secretary Monica Holland said $2400 was raised for the Need for Feed national program. “Visitors enjoyed a beautiful sunny day and wonderful local musicians who played on a voluntary basis in various cafes throughout the village,” she said. Performers included Salty and The Bluebottles, Kathryn Barker, On in 5, Owen Thomas, Ruby Whiting, Coco Michelle, Twisted Sisters, Jason and Rachel, Dan Thornell, Cathy Dobson and Dee and Kevin from the Calmer Miles. Mr Lindsay said all the major venues in
Flinders joined in the event “each with its own brilliant ambience and unique menu”. Participating businesses included Flinders Bakehouse cafe, Georgie Bass Cafe, Pier Provedore cafe, The Village Cafe, Sorellina’s cafe, and Golden Breed Surf Shop.
Fire car boot sale HASTINGS CFA members will hold a car boot sale, 8.30am-2.30pm, Sunday 11 November. A range of items will be for sale at the depot at 149 High Street, Hastings. “We are having a barbecue with our famous egg and bacon rolls, as well as sausages, ready from 8:30,” officer Trent Walden said.

Call to make supermarket giant ‘compete fairly’ Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au
Courtside: Mt Eliza pupils Stella and Thomas contest the ball with Melbourne United players Mitch McCarron.
Court show after t-shirt win BACK in April, Basketball Victoria ran a competition for the best redesign of the Hoop Time All Star grand final winner and runners up t-shirts for 2018. Getting into the action, two Mt Eliza Primary School year 6 pupils printed off entry forms and handed them out to their peers. Principal Brett Bell signed off on all the forms and entries were sent away. This month the school was told a design by
Will Leonard had been chosen as the winner. This led to the school being treated to a day of basketball clinics and a visit from the Melbourne United basketball team. The players featured in a game time event with player introductions, crowd activities, music, competitions, prizes and show bags. “Melbourne United participated in a four-quarter game against the pupils and everyone had a blast,” the school’s Madeleine Bryan said.
THE state government is handing the German supermarket chain Kaufland an “unfair advantage over local shops by going around local government planning processes”, a rival operator has claimed. Co-owner of Mt Martha SUPA IGA for 30 years Rod Allen – who is president of the MGA Independent Retailers – said the retail giant had “completely bypassed six local councils and communities and had taken its proposal to re-zone land direct to the state government by lobbying planning minister Richard Wynne”. The MGA is a national retailer association whose 2700 members include independent supermarkets and stand-alone liquor stores across Australia. Mr Allen said the proposed Mornington store near the Bata Shoe factory site would “have a big impact on shops from Mt Eliza all the way down the Mornington Peninsula”. Last month, Mr Wynne told Mornington Peninsula Shire he would appoint a committee to “provide advice and recommendations” on Kaufland’s plans to open six supermarkets around Melbourne, (“Anger over state planning takeover” The News 13/8/18). The mayor Cr Bryan Payne said the advisory panel was “another example of Mr Wynne impinging on the responsibility of local government”. Mr Allen said Kaufland was “using the minister to re-zone land so mega stores can be dropped onto local communities with all profits to be taken offshore and not spent in the local community”. “Any initial increases in employment will be

more than offset when local shops are forced to shed labour as their businesses suffer,” he said. Kaufland is looking to open mega stores on sites up to 20,000 square metres at Dandenong, Epping, Oakleigh South, Coolaroo and Chirnside Park. If given the go ahead, the stores will sell “everything from car tyres to cheese slices”, from in-house bakeries, delis, butchers, cafes, conventional grocery and Kmart-style department store sections, Mr Allen said. “They can be likened to shopping centres in their own right, in scale and product range, with proposed floor spaces of 6000-12,000 square metres which is four times larger than Coles or Woolworths and 10 times larger than Aldi, plus 300 car parking spaces,” he said. “We call on Premier Daniel Andrews to save Victorian small businesses”. A petition www.saveourshops.com.au has been started to make Kaufland “compete fairly”.

Book celebrates ‘colourful gems’ A COLOURFUL hardback described by ABC gardening guru Peter Cundall as “the ultimate book on tomatoes, brimming with information based on experience” is about to be launched in Hastings. Tomato: know, sow, grow, feast by Somers author Penny Woodward specifically celebrates Australian heirloom tomatoes which she describes as “colourful gems full to bursting with juicy deliciousness and enjoying a renaissance in Australia today”. The book aims to lead experienced and aspiring gardeners through the practice of organic heirloom tomato growing and explores the history of heirloom tomato varieties in Australia. Summing up, Cundall added: “The book covers everything anyone ever needs to know about selecting, growing and using the best and tastiest tomatoes in all districts and climates. It is the best tomato book in the world.” That’s lofty praise for the author who is originally from Rye, then Balnarring and now Somers. Woodward has a degree in botany and zoology and a passionate commitment to the environment. This has led to a lifetime of writing about and photographing organic gardens. She is horticultural editor and contributor to the ABC’s Organic Gardener Magazine, and is a panellist on 3CR community radio’s gardening program. She talks to gardeners around Australia and has written eight books on edible and useful plants, including: Asian Herbs and Vegetables, Herbs for Australian Gardens, Pest Repellent Plants, Community Gardens, and Garlic: An organic guide to knowing, growing and using garlic (all from Hyland House). This latest book written with co-authors Karen Sutherland and Janice Sutton covers everything about heirloom tomatoes and growing and using them. It is for tomato lovers, gardeners and cooks. Wooward’s section starts with the stories of those who have preserved heirloom seeds for future generations and finishes with more than 220 different varieties of heirloom tomatoes that can be bought from seed sellers here. She says the “nerdy scientist” in her loves the bit about why heirloom tomatoes are the colours they are, as well as the vibrant colours of all the “tomatoey” photographs that she has taken. The book has a sowing-and-growing section, including detailed descriptions and photographs of tomato pests and
Penny Woodward
diseases. Also included is a section on tomato flavours with 60 recipes from chefs all over Australia. Coincidentally, Melbourne Cup weekend is the time to plant tomatoes in Victoria. Woodward will be answering questions and doing a short talk about tomatoes at Petersen’s Bookstore, 103 High Street, Hastings, 1.30-2.30pm, Thursday 1 November. Purchasers get a free “tomatoey” gift and a book signed by the author. Sales are supported and part-sponsored by The Royal Tasmanian Botanic Gardens, Hobart, Tasmania. The 376-page book is $60. BIGGLES the dog in real life with his owner Tim, left, as he appears in the books illustrated by Jenny K Barnes, centre, and written Vanessa Thiele, above.
Dog used to teach social skills to children Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au PSYCHOLOGIST Vanessa Thiele has chosen to use a dog as the main character of a book aimed at fostering children’s “social and emotional intelligence, work ethic and grit”. Thiele says these are “mindset skills that are of particular interest to parents and teachers”. The man vehicle for these character traits is Biggles, a Jack Russell. In real life Biggles “worked” on farms for 15 years alongside Thiel’s husband Tim and his brother.
“Tim worked all over the Mornington Peninsula and had lots of clients, many of who would remember Biggles,” Thiele, who practices in Hastings, says. “I was inspired to write about Biggles because I saw how much he loved the work, riding in the machinery and on the hay trailer, chasing the mice. “He got into many scrapes too; once he was bitten by a snake and lived to tell the tale; another time he fought a kangaroo and held onto its back while it hopped and bounced around. He was quite extraordinary.” A mother of two – Ollie, six and Ashy, four – Thiele’s Biggles Goes to
Work is the first in a series of five she and illustrator Jenny K Barnes plan to publish through crowdfunding. Barnes is a former high school friend and also the mother of two young children. “This was definitely a passion project for me,” she said. “It’s thrilling to be able to bring this little character to life and think about the positive influence he will have on our readers”. Thiele has written three of the fivebook series. The second, called The Little Dog Who Could, focuses on resilience and overcoming challenges, and the third, Biggles Finds his
Superpowers, focuses on individual strengths and self-compassion. The final two will cover gratitude and mindfulness, and emotional intelligence. The books will be accompanied by notes to help teachers and parents “map the areas of the curriculum to the book themes and generate discussions that will support children’s positive mindset skills”, Thiele says. Sales of the books will also help “Aussie farmers battling drought and natural disasters” through the Drought Angels organisation. “We thought it only fitting, since Biggles displays the same resilience
and tenacity as the farmers themselves,” Thiele says. “The book tells a heart-warming tale in rhyming verse about Biggles working on the farm and learning the joy of helping others. “He displayed such enthusiasm and tenacity; he just loved his work and overcame every challenge he faced. I thought kids would connect with Biggles, and that his story could inspire the same strength and self-belief in them.” Biggles Goes to Work is available by going to www.Kickstarter.com and searching for Biggles Goes to Work.

Rugged up: The rescued kangaroo being cared for at Rosebud police station. Picture: Supplied
Roo bounces back after dip A WATERLOGGED kangaroo rescued by two policemen in rough seas off Safety Beach on Saturday afternoon was happily “hopping around” at a cosy refuge on Monday, a carer said. Animalia wildlife rescue group president Michelle Thomas said she collected the distressed male roo from the Rosebud police station lock up later that evening, Saturday 27 October, and took him to a specialised kangaroo shelter for some much-needed TLC. The roo’s bayside rescue, by Rosebud police Sergeant Chris Russo and Senior Sergeant Kirby Tonkin, who stripped off and waded into the waves, made TV news bulletins on Saturday night. Ms Thomas said the roo may have been “spooked” by young dirt bike riders and, in panic, hopped all the way down Boundary Road,
Dromana, to Marine Drive. It fled all the way to Safety Beach followed by cars which Ms Thomas said “only made matters worse”. “We had callers left, right and centre saying they saw it hopping all the way to Safety Beach,” she said, with the hard bitumen wearing his big toe nails right down. “All the noise and the people freaks them out. When they are frightened or being chased they often hop into the water. It can be their only option. They can swim quite well but not when it is rough like it was on Saturday.” Brought to shore by the policemen, the roo was taken back to Rosebud police station in the divvy van and given antibiotics to combat the effects of taking water into his lungs. “He will need to rest for a few days in the peace and quiet and will be released in a few day s.” Stephen Taylor

Mental health offer
Garden of memory PARISHIONERS at St Mark’s Church, Dromana – and further afield – have been handcrafting poppies for the church front garden to commemorate the end of World War I. On the weekend of 10-11 November the church garden will be full of poppies which will be planted on the Friday evening and will be on display until the Monday. On the Sunday, as part of the family service, there will be a two-minute silence in the garden at 11am. Following the service there will be refreshments, a chance to view the garden and church, and an opportunity to research the military records of those who served in the World War I. All are welcome to join in these commemorative activities. Those wanting to make poppies to be included in the garden, for which there are patterns online, should drop them off at the church by Wednesday 7 November.
Boy struck by car A BOY suffered a compound fracture of the lower leg when hit by a car behind Benton Junior College, Thursday 25 October. Acting Sergeant Mick Gridley, of Somerville Highway Patrol, said the eight-yearold was on Steedman Drive about 3.30pm when the incident occurred. The driver stopped to help. The boy was taken by ambulance to Frankston Hospital. Sergeant Gridley said it was unlikely any charges would be laid.
THE state Opposition says it will pay $1.4 million over four years for headspace to provide outreach services to 12 to 25 year olds in regional Victoria and Melbourne, including the Mornington Peninsula. “Young people on the peninsula will be able to access mental health support easier and closer to home under an elected Liberal Nationals government,” Hastings MP Neale Burgess said. He said the peninsula needed extra support “as it is critical that youth in our local community have access to more social events that keep them occupied, focused and engaged”. “Programs could include social events for young people or regular services in communities without a permanent headspace location”. Mr Burgess said.
Nook for nature
Pulling the strings A PUPPET making and performance workshop was a feature of the U3A Southern Peninsula morning tea at the Dromana Community hall last week. It was all part of Senior’s Week and entertained seniors from all over the Mornington Peninsula. A delicious morning tea prepared by volunteer catering team leader Teena Daley. Apart from bringing people together to enjoy a cuppa and cake, the event
was an opportunity to showcase the many courses available to U3A Southern Peninsula members. The puppet making and performance workshop was tutored by Veronica Rae. There was also Singing For Fun, tutored by Martie Lowenstein-Nash, and a display of art work by members enrolled in other art courses. Picture: Supplied
THE Nature Nook’s opening at The Briars Reserve, Mt Martha starts 10am on Saturday 3 November. The Nook is designed to be a place for visitors to “take a moment to be still, listen, smell, observe and contemplate wildlife”, one of its designers, Eve Kelly, said. “This free, all ages opening, presented by the Australian Wildlife Protection Council and the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, will be an interesting day of wildlife wonder, helping us to get to know the wild members of our community,” she said.
There will be presentation sessions at 10.30am, midday and 1.30pm. Activities at the The Briars visitors centre include making nests for possums, checking nest boxes, “who did that poo?”, and “who makes that sound?” and more. These sessions are followed by a visit to The Nature Nook to use our senses of sight, smell and sound to observe wildlife. Attendees should register at www. eventbrite.com.au/e/the-nature-nookwildlife-event-tickets-51394065032. Details: Call Eve Kelly on 0425 842 618.

Evidence lacking to justify gas terminal By Cat Nadel
AGL will have to do more to convince the Western Port community if it wants us to believe that a 300 metre, toxic gas import terminal at Crib Point is either safe or necessary. Claims that daily dumping of 450,000,000 litres of cold and chlorinated water will have no impact on the bay’s marine environment are misleading, unproven and designed only to benefit AGL’s business interests. A recent Australian Marine Ecology report commissioned by Environment Victoria and the Victorian National Parks Association uncovered serious omissions and inaccuracies in AGL’s “experts reports.” It found AGL’s report on chlorine release failed to consider the impacts of secondary toxicants - poisons with the potential for chronic, long-term and irreversible
impacts on the ecosystem. Due to the extra energy consumed in liquefying, shipping and re-gasifying gas that would come from AGL’s project has already been shown to be 20 per cent more polluting in terms of greenhouse gases, than gas sourced in Victoria. Worse still, while Victoria has a ban on dangerous fracking, this terminal could see us importing fracked gas from interstate and overseas. There is absolutely no reason for a forward thinking clean energy state like Victoria to be lured into an expensive, polluting trap like the one being set here by AGL. AGL’s suggestion that heating up the liquefied gas could be done using gas from the ship rather than water from the bay is a false and dangerous choice. In a time when even coal
giants like BHP are asking for a price to be put on carbon emissions, AGL should not be asking the community to make a choice between damaging Western Port and increasing pollution that further damages our climate. The people of Western Port know climate change is a threat to their area. Every day we see the reality that is described in last year’s report from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, identifying climate change as a major threat facing our internationally recognised wetland ecosystem. AGL’s “experts” have failed to mention this report, or in fact any scientific literature released on Westernport Bay in the last five years. It is this kind of biased and selective investigation that further justifies the need for a fully independent and rigor-
ous assessment such as the environment effects statement (EES), which has now been required by the state government. Environmentally, this project is a massive concern, but it doesn’t stack up from a gas market perspective either. Australia doesn’t have a gas shortage; in fact, we don’t even have a real gas market - we have a broken gas cartel. We export two thirds of our gas. AGL’s project would not solve this problem. Instead, it would have us buying back gas at a cost that wouldn’t be any cheaper for struggling Victorian businesses or households. What Victorians and the Western Port community needs is an urgent transition to an economy powered by
100 per cent cheap, clean, renewable energy. This will benefit our communities, our environment and allow us to meet the climate targets needed to prevent catastrophic global warming. AGL should be part of the solution to bringing online more wind, solar and battery storage, not charging ahead with a dirty and dangerous gas project that could lock us into polluting energy for another 20 or more years. The Western Port community refuses to be deceived by a billion dollar company rorting the system and aiming to profit off our community, our environment and our climate. AGL’s project is damaging, unnecessary and will be fiercely opposed. Cat Nadel is a climate campaigner at Environment Victoria

‘Progress’ leaves victims homeless
Students’ march to remember those who served
Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au
STUDENTS from all six secondary colleges from within the boundaries of the former Shire of Mornington will march to the cenotaph at Memorial Park, Barkly Street, Mornington on Remembrance Day, Sunday 11 November. The students will be carrying the names of the 121 men and women from the shire who volunteered to joined the armed forces in World War I. Primary schools, sporting clubs and service clubs, as well as politicians and councillors have been invited to participate in the march to the park. Individuals will also be able to lay a wreath on the day. The service will begin at 10.15am and the Mornington RSL sub-branch will open afterwards for a barbecue lunch. “I hope many from the community will join with the sub-branch in this commemoration service for those who served all those years ago, but also to show our support and gratitude to all those who have served in conflict zones around the world,” sub-branch president Alan McDonald said. RSL Victoria is hoping to raise $3 million in this year’s Poppy Appeal, with 2018 marking 100 years since the guns fell silent on the Western Front ending what became known as the Great War. Poppies were among the first plants to bloom in the war-ravaged fields of France and Belgium and, since 1921, they have been used to remember those who fell during war.
THE threatened felling of a large pine tree at the rear of a Rosebud property has neighbours fearing for the plight of an active magpie nest. Kerry-Anne Ledwidge, of The Broadway, who lives next door to the property, says the tree is slated for removal to make way for houses – a common occurrence in the developing suburb. Australian Wildlife Protection Council secretary Eve Kelly said while regulations required a permit from the Mornington Peninsula Shire to remove vegetation, the protection of wildlife was covered by the Wildlife and Cruelty to Animals acts. “I would like to know how these acts are enforced when there are active nests in trees being felled,” she said. “It has been brought to our attention that many trees in cities, suburbs and surrounding areas are being cleared, for various reasons. Many of these old and young trees, both native and nonindigenous, have active nests of native animals. “If a tree has active nests of native birds, ringtail possum, brushtail possum or sugar gliders living in hollows or in a nest, what are the DELWP regulations regarding its removal? How are these regulations enforced? Who should concerned community members report to if there are breached regulations?” Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning manager Kirsty Greengrass said an exemption under the Wildlife Regulations 2013, cov-

ered offences relating to the destruction of wildlife habitat if a person was authorised to do so via an approval under any other Act. “What this basically means is that a person who is removing native vegetation that is approved under a planning permit issued by council is not liable for offences relating to the removal of wildlife habitat,” she said. “It is up to councils to impose conditions on planning permits and sometimes, where appropriate, these con-
ditions will require the salvage and relocation of active nests out of trees that are planned for removal and into nearby trees within the same vicinity, such as within the animal’s home range. “Local councils are responsible for enforcing compliance with conditions imposed on planning permits, so if you suspect someone is not complying with their conditions, you can report it to the relevant local council.” Ms Kelly said arborists overseeing
the cutting down of large trees were often not aware they were responsible for the care and safety of wildlife. “If [animals or birds] are in active nests it is against the law under the Wildlife Act to disturb them,” she said. “Yet people are cutting down trees with active nests on the peninsula all the time. We’ve heard about possums being thrown into mulching machines, about baby brush-tails being thrown over fences.” Ms Kelly said people should be made aware of rules surrounding the care and safety of wildlife. “There’s no point having rules unless people know about them and they are enforced,” she said. Wildlife protector Klarissa Garnaut recently rescued five orphaned sugar gliders when a pine tree was chopped down in Balnarring. Ms Garnaut got the call from Wildlife Victoria and now has five orphaned sugar gliders in her care. “This will come at a great personal expense to her and growing up in care is far from ideal for baby sugar gliders,” Ms Kelly said. Ms Greengrass said a wildlife controller could be hired to remove possums, reptiles, wombats, sulphur crested cockatoos, long-billed corellas or galahs at risk of injury or death due to construction works. For all other native wildlife, an authorisation under the Wildlife Act 1975 was required to capture, relocate or euthanise the wildlife. Anyone wishing to do so can apply to DELWP for an Authority to Control Wildlife. It is an offence to disturb or destroy wildlife without authorisation.

New CEO of The Bays leads tin rattle at the Peninsula Cup THE Bays Hospital is betting on the goodwill of patrons attending Sunday’s Peninsula Cup to give generously, to help equip the hospital’s new Critical Care Unit with the latest, most advanced lifesaving equipment. Experienced healthcare executive Elena Allen, recently appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of The Bays, will be joined by critical care nurses and volunteers to collect public donations for the six-bed Critical Care Unit, opening in 2019. The availability of intensive care level services in Mornington, will mean that for the first time, patients with significant health risks and complications will not need to leave their local community when requiring hospitalisation. Elena brings a wealth of experience in the healthcare sector, including her most recent role as the Chief Executive Officer of the Calvary Central Districts Hospital in South Australia. Elena has more than 28 years experience in healthcare, working in various leadership, clinical and executive roles, including acute hospital, aged care, mental health, health call centre and disability services, with a range of local, regional and state-wide responsibilities. As a charitable hospital operating on a completely not-for-profit basis, The Bays Hospital relies on donations to ensure our patients have access to the most sophisticated equipment and therefore the very best care. To donate to The Bays Hospital visit www.thebays.com.au or phone 5975 2009.

Timely apology; show sympathy to refugees It was timely that the Prime Minister Scott Morrison, on our behalf, recognised the evils of the past and apologised to those who have suffered from abuse. They deserve it. Their suffering and living with the long lasting detrimental effects of their abuse has now been well documented. Their lives have been changed forever. There are still many children who remain on Nauru with their families. They are sick and in danger of deteriorating health. Families are separated. People rejected by United States are condemned, yet we are not told why they have been rejected. Five years of detention and under daily scrutiny with no end in sight. We know what long-term detention and institutional abuse can do to people. It is hypocritical of our politicians to continue to argue about these people’s lives. Our elected leaders are still not able to agree on where and how much “punishment” they mete out to this group of people knowing of the ongoing and long-term effects of abuse and lack of hope. It is time to bring all the refugees and asylum seekers here, and sort out the details here. We have detention centres here and our treatment of refugees is harsh, but there will be an outcome and a foreseeable future for the people. Off shore detention is no longer acceptable to the majority of Australian people, and should not be accepted by our politicians. Ann Renkin, Shoreham
Refugees have a choice Once again, we have letters in this column (“Our refugee obligations” and “Refugees blameless”

Letters 16/10/18) regarding “our refugee obligations” and being told that the Nauru “refugees are blameless” and should be brought to Australia immediately. I would like to remind both letter writers that we have one of the highest refugee intake rates in the world. Combined with the US and Canada, we take in 80 per cent of the world’s refugees. So why are some disgruntled people constantly trying to guilt us? Additionally, many Australians find individuals that pay people smugglers, that cross borders illegally, and who then try to use their children as bargaining chips in order to gain entry and residency, quite repulsive. No one likes a cheat and no one likes to see children used in such an abominable fashion. The people detained on Nauru have a choice of going back to their home nations but choose not to, that is their decision. But please, stop trying to make the rest of us feel guilty about this. We have great needs in our own communities with poverty and homelessness and many of our own children needing a hand up. The worst thing we can do is to open the borders again and have another 52,000 people roll up in 830 boats. We should continue to take in refugees, but on our terms, not theirs. Questionable claims I wonder did [AGL senior manager project engagement] Kelly Parkinson come up with the latest instalment of AGL propaganda all by himself, or does it come from a team of writers in the back rooms of AGL’S comedy department? (“Supply concerns drive gas import ‘urgency’” The News 24/10/18). His statement about the expert reports showing this venture is as benign as he wants us to believe, are very misleading at best. Nowhere in the reports is there any mention of the cumulative effect of constant addition of chlorinated and refrigerated water to Western Port. The only thing one can possibly assume is that the report is based on a on/off discharge of these huge quantities of chlorinated and refrigerated waters. His claims of a concern for the environment, by choosing the sea water regasification method over a method using some of the gas itself for regasification of the liquid gas are highly questionable, because this method would probably make the whole venture financially unviable. I’m also fairly sure most of the costumers who signed a MOU [memorandum of understanding] with AGL are probably electricity generators. For me, this is a plan for ever greater global

federal government could fall. I am positive there must be someone out there who could give the MP Flinders a run, if not win, and make it a marginal seat. I hope I am not dreaming for that Independent but, in my humble opinion, Flinders deserves better than what we have. Don’t forget Mr Hunt put his support at the recent leadership hassle behind none other than [Home Affairs Minister] Peter Dutton, who I believe will go down in history as one of the cruellest ministers ever. I believe in the not too distant future there will be a prime minister who will apologise to our refugees for the appalling cruelty that has been taking place on Nauru and Manus Island. One hopes that they will recover from the mental health issues that are evident from this cruelty. Denise Hassett, Mt Martha

warming. In the light of the latest reports from the UN climate change body, we should stop burning fossil fuels as soon as possible. If AGL really was such a great champion of society it would not be advocating the burning of ever greater quantities of fossil fuels. And singing from the same song book as our climate change denying federal government about power prices is very disingenuous. Rupert Steiner, Balnarring Beach
All time levy Twenty something years ago then Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett activated a “levy” to show on our water bill each September for $50 to the benefit of parks and gardens. Twenty something years later this levy is still there and we, the owners of dwellings, are still paying it, only now it is $77.10. It shows in pale print on the back side of your account. May I ask you to do a sum: google how many dwellings there are in Victoria and multiplay the number by $77.10. It blows the mind, hey. Am I missing something here? I would think Parks Victoria should be self-sufficient, after all it has more land than anyone else in the state. What would it do with these billions of dollars every year? From a personal point of view, I was born in 1933, survive on a limited income and am astonished and bewildered that the Victorian government can give me a $78 concession on the front side of the bill and then take $77.10 away on the back (in pale print). I would be very interested to know readers’ opinions on this. Mine is highway robbery. Audrey Doueal, Rosebud.

Repatriation Fund will be given in the Mechanics. There should be a bumper house for such a worthy movement, especially as the money raised will be expended in the district, and on our own boys. *** MR J. C. Murphy, who has seen three and a half years of active service at the front with our troops, has now purchased the dairy business of Mr T. Reeves, in Bay Street, Frankston, and solicits a continuance of the support accorded his predecessor. *** REV O. J. Boyle, Methodist Home Mission Deputation, will preach on Sunday next at Frankston, morning; Langwarrin, afternoon; and Somerville, evening. He will address a public meeting in the Frankston Methodist Church on Thursday evening next at 8p.m. *** THE president of the Frankston Progress Association acknowledge with thanks, the receipt of the following donations to Madden Memorial Fund. Amount previously acknowledged, £25 17s 6d; Dr Foreman (Sydney), £5 5s; Sir David Hennessy, £2 2s; Miss R. McAlister, £2 2s; Miss M. V. Primrose; £1 1s ; John Jolly esq. £1 1s; Mrs John Jolly, £1 1s ; Mrs Agnes Shidds, 10s ; Total, £38 19s 6d. Donations acknowledged only up to 25th Oct. 1918. Th President of the Frankston Progress Association has received a communication from Miss M. V. Primrose, organising secretary of the Australian Visiting Trained Nurses’ Association of which the late Sir John Madden was President. Miss Primrose anticipates being able to forward a donation of £1 1s for each of the members, by a later mail, for the Madden Memorial Fund. Miss Primrose also wishes and suggests that a public function to raise funds for the Memorial be inaugurated in Melbourne in which the Australian Trained Nurses Association would assist and take part. The suggestion will be brought before the next meeting of the Progress Association. *** 8th Presentation to Frankston Volunteers. On Thursday evening the Mechanics’ Hall was well filled, at the invitation of the local branch of the Red Cross Society, in order to bid farewell to a few more of our brave lads, who have now reached the age that renders them eligible for enlistment, and who were only too eager for that time to come. The chair was occupied by Cr Chas. Murray, President of the Shire, in the absence of Mr James Grice, who was unavoidably absent. A good musical programme was commenced by the singing of the National anthem, Miss O’Grady presiding at the piano, and also playing most of the accompaniments. The following programme was then gone
through: Mr Payne, song and encore; Mrs Boyett, song; Miss E. Murray, song; Mrs Aitken, song and encore. The chairman then said that the most important part of the programme would now be proceeded with, viz. the presentation of medals to the lads who had enlisted in defence of their King and Country. He spoke of the deeds done by our Australian lads who had already gone, and felt sure that the lads that evening would emulate those deeds. These young men, as they come of age, were keeping up the traditions of Frankston, and if the other parts of the State had followed that example there would have been no need for compulsory enlistment. Dr Plowman said the presentation this evening to volunteers from Frankston was the eighth that had been made since the commencement of war. There had been 136 presentations made and with the six to be made that evening, made up a total of 142 volunteers who had received presentations. In the first instance presentations of wristlet watches were made, but it was afterwards thought that medals would be more suitable and last longer as mementoes of the occasion. The chairman then made the first presentation to Private Allan Tivendale (formerly employed in the local post office) and accompanied the gift with a few words of cheer and encouragement and a wish for his safe return. Private Eric McComb, whose brother, Private Bert McComb had made the supreme sacrifice, and he was going to fill his place. Private Reg. Coxall, Private F. Johns, Privates Earps, and Private Evan Jones, were then given their medals by the chairman, who expressed great admiration at the action of the lads and a heartfelt wish for their safe e return. Private R L. Green, a returned man who his re-enlisted and gone to the front for the second time, and Privates Reginald and Robert Grierson, the two latter being present and are just about leaving for the front, will also receive medals at a later date, their names not having been given to the hon. sec. (Dr Plowman) in time for presentations to be made that evening. After the presentations, three hearty cheers were given and “ For they are jolly good follows” sang with enthusiasm. After Mr Payne and Mrs Aitken had favored the company with songs and the Misses Murray with a duet, for which an encore was demanded. Cr Mason proposed a hearty vote of thanks to all those who had assisted in making the function the undoubted success it had been. Refreshments were then handed round, and the proceedings termnated in a dance, which was much enjoyed. *** OUR LETTER BOX. THE WATTLE CLUB. TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—In your last week’s issue of the “Standard “ there appears an article, criticising the Wattle Club, in which you state that the Wattle Club absolutely refused to lend any of its furnishings, or to assist in any way, the welcome to two Anzacs. Now, Sir, I wish to say that that statement is absolutely inaccurate, as the president gave me full permission to use whatever I required of the club’s crockery, furnishings, etc. They even left the decorations up in the hall which had been in use the night previous. Trusting you will do justice to the Wattle Club by inserting this disclaimer.—Yours etc. ALICE McCOMB. We quite understand that the Wattle Club material was loaned to Mrs M’Comb personally, and also we have on reliable authority that it was refused the Welcome Home committee as a body. Why ?—ED. *** From the pages of the Mornington Standard, 2 November 1918

THE MEANING OF EXISTENCE... AND OTHER SHORT STORIES
It’s Okay to Be White (But It’s Still Not Okay to be Awful) ‘It’s okay to be white’ What a puzzling declaration! Dare I suggest that it betrays A vulgar fascination With trying to sew division In every corner of the nation. That’s such a lot of fuss over A lack of pigmentation
By Stuart McCullough I’ve never really wondered If it’s okay to be white It’s never really crossed my mind Or kept me up at night It seemed a silly thing to say So strange and impolite But still it made me think of all The whiteness in my life
‘It’s okay to be white’ I’m still puzzled that you said it It’s not a thing that needs to be Debated in the Senate It’s such a shame it happened Whether here or Timbuktu Especially when you should have Many better things to do
I wake up every morning On the white side of the bed Ignoring all the white noise That has gathered in my head It continues on with coffee Flat white! Not cappuccino No other brew would ever do For this middle-aged albino
It’s okay to speak your mind I just hope that it’s awake! And that you know the impact That your silly words can make For it’s okay to be quite dull Bohemian or artsy But it’s not okay to echo things Said by neo-Nazis
I slap on some white sunscreen If I plan to step outside Otherwise my pale skin Will sizzle, bake and fry Cos being pink is not okay And red is downright awful Sunstroke makes me lie down And take aspirin by the paw full
Yes, it’s okay to be white Or be mauve or pink or purple It’s okay to like giraffes Or dugongs, dogs or turtles. It’s okay to be tall and thin Or short and kind of dumpy It’s okay to be anything - Happy, sad or grumpy.
For when it comes to being white There’s no one white as me It’s not that it is not okay More it was meant to be Cos being white is not a choice It’s a question of degree I suspect it’s true for others too Whatever shade they be Purple, green or topaz too - Everyone’s fantastic! Whatever kind of skin you’re in Wrinkled or elastic It’s just the sack we’re stuck with We’re otherwise the same We want the lives of those we love To be sweet as sugar cane
So let’s agree that it’s okay To be anything you like And if that proves too much for you Then, best be on your bike Stop your incessant carping Be glad for what you’ve got For being white might be okay But being awful is definitely not stuart@stuartmccullough.com

Seaford took on Hastings and posted a small total of 81 off just 47 overs before their 10 wickets fell. Hastings punished Seaford for their struggles, and ended the day with a whopping 1/130. Robert Hearn will continue his innings next weekend from 55 not out. Heatherhill won the toss and chose to bat first against Mt Martha, and posted a handy first innings total of 145. Mt Martha lost an early wicket to go 1/0, before steadying to finish the day at 1/16.

MOOROODUC have failed to make the most of a poor Long Island innings as the first two day clashes of the 2018/19 MPCA season took place. Andrew Tweddle top scored for Long Island with a lowly score of 17, as Moorooduc bowler Reece Cordeaux starred by running through the top order and claiming figures of 4/23 with 7 maidens. Long Island ended up all out for 75, but were let off the hook by a shaky Moorooduc, who lost their first two wickets for 4 runs. Moorooduc finished the day at 5/98. At Ditterich Reserve Crib Point were sent in to bat first by Main Ridge. Losing the toss had no effect on Crib Point, who batted well to reach 8/190 at the close of play. Jason Albress could hold his head high after a strong performance with ball in hand, claiming 4/63. Red Hill put in a good performance against Somerville to reach a strong total of 184. Tail end batsman Jamie McCall put in a big shift, with 44 runs to his name. The final Peninsula match featured Pines and Baden Powell. Pines won the toss and chose to bat first, and their top order performed valiantly. Ashley Hupe scored a well taken half century, as the Pines ended up all out for a well taken 221. Baden Powell finished at 0/7 at the end of play.

District clash between Carrum and Rosebud this Saturday. Rosebud batted first and struggled at times, with Billy Quigley top scoring with a handy 48 runs. They finished all out for 145 off 73 overs.
Carrum faced 7 overs before the end of play, finishing at 0/8. Delacombe Park played brilliantly at home to post a massive total against Seaford Tigers. Steven Anderson scored a career best 111 runs, including two sixes, to
A MAMMOTH total of 112 from Balnarring batsman Brenton Taylor has helped his side to a final tally of 212 from 73 overs against Tootgarook. Tootgarook lost an early wicket and finished up at 1/14. Tyabb were no match for Carrum Downs, who put together a great team performance to post a total of 8/250 at the end of play. Three Carrum Downs batmen posted totals of over 40, with Ryan Lynch top scoring with 61. The Yabbies have a huge task ahead of them to stay in touch, Dromana Reserve played host to Dromana and Rye on Saturday, as the home side was sent in to bat first. Mark Whitehead scored a handy 48, but his middle order collapsed around him. Dromana finished all out for 125, to which Rye answered with 2/42 before the close of play.

A STUNNING middle order performance from Baxter has guided them to a stunning total of 6/318 against Sorrento at David Macfarlane Reserve. 105 not out from Daniel Warwick and a well taken 70 from Chris Brittain guided them to their monstrous total. The Sharks now face a big task to chase Baxter down. Travis Campbell also performed well with a good score of 70. Mornington performed better with their home ground advantage, as they put Pearcedale to work with an impressive batting display. Ben Clements continued his brilliant start to the year, claiming his second century in the last week before being run out for 105. Mornington finished at 8/276 at the end of 80 overs. Mt Eliza also performed well to survive 80 overs, as they finished their innings against Flinders at 8/203. Two half centuries from middle order batsmen saved Mt Eliza from a tougher battle. Baxter, Pines snare coach, players SOCCER
By Craig MacKenzie BAXTER and Frankston Pines have hit the ground running with preparations for next season. Last week Baxter announced that Robert Mathieson was the new assistant to head coach George Hughes while the makeover of the Pines squad by gaffer Kevin “Squizzy” Taylor got underway in earnest. Mathieson played with Mulgrave, Croydon, Springvale City and Dandenong City before joining Langwarrin 27 years ago eventually becoming a long-serving assistant to legendary senior coach Gus Macleod. He spoke to other local clubs before accepting an offer from Baxter gaffer George Hughes. “I get on well with George and we share the same football philosophy so it was a good fit,” Mathieson said. “The facilities there are top-notch and they’re only going to get better with new lighting and new dugouts on the way in fact the facilities are better than some of the NPL clubs I’ve been to. “I think Baxter has got great potential and hopefully with George’s experience and my experience we can point the team in the right direction.” Ex-Langwarrin midfielder Matt Morgan has been linked with Baxter again after leaving the club midway through last season and joining rival Hampton Park United, which eventually was relegated. Current Langy midfielder Jonny Guthrie is another possible target. The experienced Englishman would be a huge asset in the middle of the park and is just as comfortable playing at the back. Hughes and Mathieson were not the only interested spectators at last Wednesday night’s hit-out between Australia Youth and Baxter at Parkmore soccer club in Keysborough. Former Kingston City and Baxter midfielder and current Skye United player Jack Gallagher was in the crowd and was seen deep in conversation with Hughes. Australia Youth was coached by former Baxter boss Roy Kilner who is preparing the squad for the 2018 UNite Cup run by the Melbourne Chinese Soccer Association in partnership with Football Victoria and Melbourne Victory. Kilner has been offered the senior coaching job at Dandenong Warriors which is one of Baxter’s State 4 South rivals so his presence will add an edge to league clashes between these clubs

in 2019. Meanwhile Pines used social media to announce the signings of Travis Ernsdoerfer and Cameron Bryden last Friday while Cedric Benza, Tuach Ter and Tapiwanashe Munyanyiwa are expected to be announced as new signings this week. Ernsdoerfer, 18, is a former Bentleigh Greens junior who made his senior debut with Baxter before playing with Langwarrin’s under-20s in the NPL last season. “He brings a different dimension to us up front,” Taylor said. “He’s very direct, strong on the ball and powerfully built. He’s comfortable with his back to goal and he’s good in the air.” Bryden, 23, played with Langy juniors before making his senior debut with Seaford United. He was overseas for most of last season but returned and played half a dozen games for Seaford as the club battled to save its State 3 South-East status. “He’s good on the ball and he

doesn’t mind getting stuck in,” Taylor said. “He can play in central midfield or up front and he’ll be an asset.” Benza, 20, is a former Springvale White Eagles player who joined Langy’s under-20s last season but no longer qualifies for that age group. “Cedric’s a readymade senior player and I’ve got a lot of time for him,” Taylor said. “He’s strong, good in the air and his recovery and closing speeds are just fantastic.” Ter is a former Springvale White Eagles and Langwarrin under-20s leftsided player and Taylor was delighted to clinch his signature. “Tuach has terrific quick feet, is defensively sound and has the ability to get past an opponent and whip dangerous crosses into the box,” he said. “Tapsy” Munyanyiwa is set to quickly become a fans favourite at Monterey Reserve. He’s a flying machine with plenty of NPL senior experience and the 21-year-old winger has been with
Bentleigh Greens, Springvale White Eagles, Sunshine George Cross, Doveton and Point Cook. “He was with me when we won the under-20s championship at Bentleigh and I’m absolutely stoked to get him to Pines,” Taylor said. The only loss so far from last season’s senior squad is midfielder Ross Robertson due to tertiary studies while striker Mitch Lander has been rumoured to be returning to Seaford United. But it’s expected that the bulk of last season’s squad will attend pre-season training which gets underway officially on 4 December. CJ Hodgson and Graham Hill have been sounded out by other clubs with Mornington and Doveton keen on Hodgson while Hill has been linked with Brandon Park. Taylor is keen to retain them and has his sights on other signing targets. Langy midfielder Alex Whyte, 20, is one of them. “Alex is good with either foot, has good vision and is very composed,” Taylor said. “He can pick a pass and go long or short and he’s a good organiser. “He broke into Langy’s senior squad last season and came off the bench a few times.” It’s believed that Taylor also has an in-principle agreement with exPines keeper Alfonso Cardinale who switched to Heatherton United last season. Taylor is set to meet with other prospective signings in coming weeks but

won’t release their names yet. Former Skye United and Seaford United coach Paulo Pinheiro will coach Pines’ reserve squad next season. “Paulo was very keen to get back into coaching and he’s happy to work with the younger players,” Taylor said. Once Darren Roberts can resolve some work issues he’ll decide whether or not he can take up the offer of assisting Taylor. Pines also look like fielding a couple of junior teams next season. The club is likely to have an under15s team with the bulk of that squad coming from another local club. And the spill from last season’s under-11 program at Langwarrin looks likely to produce an under-12 squad for Pines in 2019. In NPL2 news Langwarrin announced on Sunday that it had signed striker David Stirton from Dandenong City. Stirton is a former Langy junior who has extensive experience at the elite level of Victorian soccer including spells with Oakleigh Cannons, Dandenong Thunder, Melbourne Victory, Southern Stars, Bentleigh Greens, South Melbourne and Port Melbourne. Langy announced last week that Ritchie May would be senior team manager for next season and Peter Tuckett would assist high performance manager Alistair Wallace. May was assistant coach and team manager of the under-20s last season while Tuckett first joined Langy as a player in 1977 and for many years now has been the club’s fitness coach. Former Peninsula Strikers and Frankston Pines midfielder Ben Millward is expected to be named shortly as the new strength and conditioning coach of Langy’s under-20s. In State 2 South-East news Peninsula Strikers’ boss Danny Verdun will hold a meet and greet night with current and prospective players at the club’s Centenary Park headquarters on Thursday at 6.30pm. Verdun has been arranging a raft of pre-season friendlies and signed off on the last one a few days ago. Strikers will host South Yarra on Saturday 16 February at 3pm and 5pm. In other news State 3 South-East outfit Skye United announced last weekend that Liam George had been reappointed for a fourth straight year to the reserves coaching post while local goalkeeping guru Peter Blasby will meet with Dandenong City head coach Zeljko Kuzman this week to discuss a specialist role at the club.

Hillier scores Australia’s first threeby-three silverware By Ben Triandafillou SOUTHERN Peninsula Sharks director of coaching, Gerard Hillier, has taken the Australian Youth Girls three-by-three team all the way to a bronze medal at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Thursday 18 October. The youth girls side, made up of Suzi-Rose Deegan, Sara-Rose Smith, Ruby Porter and Alexandra Fowler, secured Australia’s first piece of international silverware in three-by-three basketball with a 16-13 victory over top-ranked China in the bronze medal game. The Australian side entered the tournament which went for almost two weeks as the last women’s seed (20th) and sat at 36th in the world rankings prior to the competition. Despite their low ranking and entering the tournament as a wildcard, the

youth girls played with a lot more quality than their ranking would suggest. In the group stage, the youth girls were victorious in three of their four matches, defeating the Netherlands (ranked fifth) 11-7, Czech Republic (ranked 17th) 15-11 and Estonia (ranked fourth) 19-15. They went on to comfortably defeat Ukraine (ranked second) 16-6 in the quarter finals before suffering an overtime loss to France (ranked sixth) 19-20 in the semi-final. The Aussies bounced back to defeat China in the bronze medal game and will now likely sky rocket their world ranking, having finished third overall in the international competition. Sharks director of coaching, Gerard Hillier, said “I cannot put into words the amount of grit and determination these young
ladies had in the face of some extremely strong competition and through adversity,” he said. “If we had to do it all over again, I couldn’t think of four better players to go back to battle with.” The exceptional run from the youth girls tops off a remarkable 12 months for the coach who has been dominating the women’s leagues with his various teams. Hillier coached the under-18s women’s side which won a bronze medal at the Australian Junior Championships; the under-16s women’s side which won a gold medal at the Basketball Victoria Country Championships; the under-16s women’s side which were crowned champions in the Victorian Junior Basketball League; and the Sharks’ state championship women’s side which finished runners-up in the Big V competition.
AUSTRALIAN body builder and owner of Empire Fitness gym in Rosebud, Paul Jayilian, will be travelling to America to defend his WFF NABBA World Title on Saturday 3 November. Jayilian, 43, has been competing in the sport of body building since 2008, and has spent the past five years undefeated on the national and international circuit. The former kick boxer said he is super confident heading into this year’s world championships. “I think I’ve got it covered,” he said. “I’ve just had a slight change in diet and training heading into this year’s one but I’ve put on probably 6kgs. “From last November I was 80kgs with 3 per cent body fat and this year I will be about 86kgs with 3 per cent body fat.” The experienced body builder has competed in around 45 competitions since he started in 2008 and has shelved 45 trophies, having finished first or second in every competition he has entered, including the worldrenowned Arnold Classic which he won in 2017. Despite being eligible to compete in the over-40s Master’s competition, Jayilian said he won’t be contemplating the move into that division until the younger generation start to beat him. “I haven’t done that because there’s no real reason to,” he said. “I’m still taking on the younger guys and I’m still beating them so until they start beating me then I’ll stay here.” For some athletes, it can be difficult to work and train at the same time, but for Jayilian, he said his lifestyle
has worked perfectly for him. “I like to push myself to the limit,” he said. “I do about an hour and a half to two hours a day of weight training and that’s six days a week. I take one day off.” “I own my own gym and opened up Empire Fitness in Rosebud in April, so I pretty much work here and train at the same time which is great for me.” Following on from the WFF NABBA World Title, Jayilian will also be contending the Arnold Classic again in Melbourne early next year. Bonbeach crowned aerobic champions
Hunter sets sights on Peninsula Cup MORNINGTON-based trainer, Wez Hunter, will be out to keep his unbeaten run this season at Mornington alive, as his talented gelding Call It A Day lines up in the Peninsula Cup (1600m). Despite stepping up to the distance for the first time, Hunter is confident Call It A Day can keep the hot-streak going in the Peninsula Cup. “His record on his home track is really good, and he’s had three starts [this preparation] for two wins and a second,” he said. “He’ll drop to the minimum and it’ll be his first time at the mile, but his form around 1500m has been pretty solid so the trip shouldn’t be an issue.”
It’s been just over a year since Call It A Day fractured his hind leg in trackwork, but since reaching optimal fitness, Hunter believes his gelding has “come back bigger and better”. “It took him a bit to get right but now he’s back and racing to the potential that we thought he had,” he said. Hunter has been low-flying as of late, training three winners and a narrow second place-getter from his past five runners (at time of writing). Three of those runs were from the airborne Call It A Day. Hong Kong jockey Tommy Berry could also potentially be booked for the ride.
BONBEACH Primary School returned from the Gold Coast with silver and gold medals from the School Aerobic National Championships on Saturday 25 August. It’s the second year that the school has had an aerobic team compete at the national level and this year the Bonbeach Bolts were crowned national champions in the team’s competition. Two of their members, sisters Tara and Grace Ash, also won silver in the pair’s event. The sisters performed their routine to a song of their choosing being Katy Perry’s ‘Fireworks’ and choreographed their own routine for the event. The Bolts team consisted of Stella King-Stemmer, Sienna Shead, Jasmin Scott, Tara Ash, Lily Parks, Kaitlyn Farr, Grace Ash and Tea Matic. Coached by Bonbeach Primary School teachers, Ms Mullavey and Ms Batson, the aerobics teams put in a lot of hard work throughout the year, having started their training in November last year. Bonbeach Primary School teacher and aerobics fundraiser, Sharon King, said a lot of effort was also put in by the girls to fund the trip. “The girls we have got at the moment did a fabulous job,” King said. “They raised all the funds to get there. They ran raffles, had BBQ’s outside of Safeway, and ran silent auctions to fund their trip. “They raised about $8,000 to go and they did the school very proud.” King said the girls were “very dedicated” having trained twice a week starting at 7:30 in the morning as well

as training during lunch times. It did come as a slight surprise to the teams, with one of the main chances that they believed would go close to winning it, finishing in third. But after a nervous wait the Bolts
were crowned national champions with the “parents and kids bursting into tears of joy” following the announcement. The teams had a barbecue of their own to celebrate their victory.
