Court on charges of criminal damage by fire, Tuesday 7 June. The damage bill to the Edward St stadium, mostly used for basketball, is expected to be $1.5-$2 million. Basketball games scheduled for the stadium have been called a draw until other venues can be found. The girl was reportedly with four friends in a teen hangout under the sta-

dium call “The Shack” when they reportedly lit a small fire to keep warm. They had been “mischievous”, each telling their parents they were staying overnight with others, police said later. Detective Senior Constable Peter Butland, of Somerville Police Complex, said the fire, fuelled by plastic sheeting, grew quickly out of control. The boys burned their hands trying

to put it out it with a jacket and soft drink. They ran for water but by the time they got back were beaten back by dense black smoke and flames. Detective Butland said the teenagers called the CFA and then, in a panic, ran a short distance and watched until fire crews arrived. “We don’t believe they started the big fire deliberately – it was an acci-

dent,” he said. “They are all traumatised. They wish they could turn back the hands of time.” Somerville CFA operations officer Joe Vertisi said fire crews began a frantic search for the teenagers, who he said were “unaccounted for”, before they could even start fighting the fire. Continued Page 4

DID YOU KNOW

VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?

Make your vote count this federal election. At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly.

If you choose to vote below the line, you must number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice.

On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line.

Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you must number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box.

If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.

‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.

This federal election your vote will help shape Australia.

Distress signals from sub’s owners Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au THE crunch time is fast approaching for the future of the Otama submarine anchored off Crib Point with deteriorating moorings. Earlier this year the submarine’s owners – the Western Port Oberon Association – sent out an SOS saying $50,000 was needed to fix the mooring by this month, May. Association president Max Bryant said yesterday (Monday) that the alternative was to sell the submarine for scrap. The desperate efforts to find a solution to the mooring dilemma is the latest of many hurdles faced during the 14 years since the submarine arrived in Western Port. Saturday marked the 14the anniversary of the Otama being towed here from Western Australia. The association has a $25 million plan to bring the Otama, an Oberon class submarine, ashore and use it as the centrepiece of the Victorian Maritime Museum at Hastings. “We’re chasing money for the moorings; there are irons in the fire everywhere,” Mr Bryant said. He also said the association had received a quote from a scrap metal dealer, but would not reveal how much the submarine was worth. A deadline has also been agreed for the association to abandon its project to preserve the Otama if the rescue money cannot be found. “We’ve had discussion with a company that’s willing to take it imme-

diately.” Mr Bryant said the association owned the submarine which was bought with a $500,000 grant under the Centenary of Federation program. He said the association had since “put a lot more than that into it” and that no money received from its scrapping would go back to the federal government. But Mr Bryant remains optimistic about money being found for the moor-

ings and says there is no danger of the 2030 tonne Otama breaking loose. “We haven’t worked this hard to just see it all thrown away,” he said. “We need to get it [the museum plan] across the line.” The plan also includes bringing the former Port Phillip Sea Pilots ship Wyuna from Tasmania to Victoria. The Wyuna was built in 1953 and donated to the association in 2013.

It has been extensively refitted and undergone sea trials but remains in Tasmania because there is no berth available in Melbourne. A berth at Docklands fell through late last year and Mr Bryant said the association was trying to find an alternative. He said the “port operators” in western Port had refused to offer a berth – “they’re out to make money” – while

one berth being investigated was at Geelong. Mr Bryant said he was “left gobsmacked” when told that Mornington Peninsula Shire would not put any money towards the museum project “because we’re a private enterprise” while it contributed to chambers of commerce and tourism associations. Meanwhile, Hastings MP Neale Burgess is attempting to negotiate with port operator Patricks to repair just one of the submarine’s four moorings. He said Patricks had refused a request from the association “so I’m asking them to reconsider”. “Everyone is really supportive of the submarine. It’s never been in doubt: everybody wants this to happen,” Mr Burgess said. “They just run into block after block.” Mr Burgess said the latest estimate of $25 million being needed for the maritime museum – including bringing the submarine alongside Western Port marina – had come as a shock to many. “Nobody had ever [before] indicated it was that expensive,” he said. He said a $1 million election promise by the former Liberal-led government had been a “show of confidence”. “But even if we had been re-elected it’s anybody’s guess where the $25 million would have come from.” Mr Burgess said the Oberon association had rejected an offer he made to broker talks between it and an international company that ran resorts, theme parks and entertainment – “it seemed a natural fit”.

‘Tough day’ leads to games redraw WESTERN Port Basketball Association operations manager Tyler Molloy said officials met Sunday night after their stadium was devastated by fire to plan emergency venues and inform user groups. “We are working now on arranging external venues for 67 teams tonight (Monday) and liaising with officials from the Southern Peninsula, Mornington and Chelsea basketball associations,” Mr Molloy told The News. “Today we are getting in contact with local schools to assess court availability and start planning matches for 190 teams.” Officials later said all games scheduled for the Somerville Recreation Centre would be declared draws until a new fixture can be organised. In an email to parents, administration officer/ competitions manager Dale Jaensch said: “Yesterday was a very tough day for our association and I would like to update you all on what we

will be doing moving forward domestically. “We have been through a number of meetings and discussions regarding getting our players back on court as soon as possible. “At this stage domestic competitions will continue. “Teams that were scheduled to play at Somerville Rec Centre will be rescheduled to other venues. Until this change is made, all games that were fixtured to be played there will be made a draw. “I will communicate with all teams once these games have been refixtured. “All games scheduled to be played at satellite venues will continue as normal. All changes will be updated to the website. “Thank you all for your understanding during this time. The office is working tirelessly to ensure your basketball experience at Western Port Basketball is of the highest standard.”

ENROL NOW FOR YEAR 7 2018!

Gutted: Firefighters were unable to save the stadium at Somerville Community & Recreation Centre but managed to create a wall of water to limit damage to other sections of the building. Pictures: Gary Sissons

Charges over stadium fire Continued from Page 1 “We were very concerned and spent time trying to find them,” he said. “There was a lot of yelling and confusion as we tried to find out if they were still on the premises.” Mr Vertisi said 20 appliances and up to 80 firefighters took 90 minutes to control the fire. Although the stadium was totally destroyed fire crews managed to use a “curtain of water” to shield the staff offices and child care area. Westerly winds “howling like billy-o” gave the fire the upper hand. “The fire took hold in 15 minutes and there was no way we could control, it,” Mr Vertisi said. “It was just amazing to see the steel structure destroyed. Once the roof collapsed in on itself it was hard to extinguish as we couldn’t get water under it.” Hastings CFA captain Jim Atkinson said the

building was “fully involved when we got there at 7.30am and half an hour later the roof collapsed”. The scene was later inspected by CFA fire investigations officers, forensic police and shire officers. Built in 1994, the stadium had two courts for basketball, netball, badminton, volleyball and floorball. The building included a customer service centre, early childhood program and occasional childcare, multi-purpose room, three community activity rooms, Somerville Community House, Maternal & Child Health Centre and a kiosk. The customer service centre will be moved to the Somerville Library, 1085 Frankston-Flinders Rd, Somerville. For all other inquiries, including alternative childcare and maternal and child health, visit the Hastings Shire office on Marine Pde, Hastings, or call 1300 850 600.

Seachangers left without a boat THE joys of a sea change to Balnarring have been undermined for new residents Phil and Janet Eyles as they struggle to get over the theft of their Quintrex 370 Traveller, trailer, lifejackets and other safety gear. The boat was stolen from their backyard in the early hours of Tuesday last week, despite it being chained to a caravan and a padlocked towing ball. Mrs Eyles, who said they moved from Ringwood East last October, awoke at 4am but heard nothing out of the ordinary, while her dogs slept on undisturbed in the workshop. “We moved to the area late last year to get away from traffic and city living, but it seems that the serenity of Balnarring has been snatched away from us, she said Thursday. “We thought we were safe but the thieves used bolt cutters and then pushed the trailer

down the street to where a car was parked and towed it away. The couple’s 1300 square metre block is secluded, but a walkway gives a view of their yard. “We suspect someone has seen the boat and passed on the information to the thief, she said. “I just want to alert people in the Balnarring area that thieves are very active. “We felt we lived in a very safe area and can't believe that anyone could do this. “People should be made aware of these low life people who destroy other peoples' happiness. The couple have reported the theft to police and have scoured social media and trading sites without success. “I feel helpless as to what to do, Mrs Eyles said. The couple had just paid $300 for lifejackets

and the boat contained many accessories, including two swivel seats. “You don’t realise how these things affect you, she said. “The neighbours have been very supportive. Constable Sam Purdon, of Hastings police, said residents should ensure items such as boats, trailers and caravans were shielded from the street. He said the Water Police was handling the theft and the boat’s details had been flagged on their system. The Quintrex 370 traveller has a 15hp Mercury outboard, year old Dunbier trailer, two blue swivel chairs, two Marlin inflatable life jackets, bimini, and other boat accessories. The registration number is KZ833 and the trailer number is V40614. Anyone seeing the boat or trailer is can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Constable Purdon, 5970 7800. Steve Taylor

Visa delays see mayor miss China trade trip MORNINGTON Peninsula mayor Cr Graham Pittock abandoned a trade mission to China last month after it became too hard to arrange a visa. Cr Pittock said the shire “lost $1500 on flight bookings in the exercise after he was invited to speak at an event being organised by the China-based Australian International Trade Association. “It [the trip] was cancelled because I became too busy, Cr Pittock said. He said the eight to 10-day visit to China would have given the shire “experience of doing business with internationally. Cr Pittock said he had been approached by the AITA and was now considering attending another of the association’s events in June.

GRAHAM Pittock

He said it had taken three days to get a visa “because of my incompetence and lack of experience. While in China he had planned to speak about the Mornington Peninsula. “We need to learn how they do business in China. If Cr Pittock had gone to China it would have been his second overseas trip since being elected mayor in November 2015. The shire paid for Cr Pittock, Cr Hugh Fraser and the shire’s then renewable resources team leader Jessica Wingad to attend last year’s United Nations’ climate change conference in Paris. Asked on 6 April for details of the mayor’s planned trip to China, the shire’s communications and media manager Mark Kestigian

replied: “There is no formal response to the trip overseas as it did not eventuate and to the best of my knowledge, cost the shire nothing. A 2007 investigative report by Bill Birnbauer in The Sunday Age listed complaints by some Australians about the AITA’s handling of work visas within China and the adverse reactions of some Australian politicians about links the organisation claimed to have with them. Among those mentioned by the AITA on its website is former Victorian Speaker and MP for Bass Ken Smith, a regular visitor to China. Mr Smith was a councillor and shire president with the former Shire of Hastings. Keith Platt

A KEEN surfer, Kent Stannard has a fascination with sharks. He never misses a news report on the latest shark attack and is always trying to discover the circumstances surrounding the incident. When a series of attacks near Ballina in northern NSW caused widespread concern last year he was on the spot. Stannard predicts a similar situation this year with one surfer at Newcastle already being badly mauled. Stannard is the head of Tag for Life, a non-for-profit organisation investigating shark behaviour, particularly that of great whites. Alongside Tag for Life is Whitetag, a clothing supply company that donates profits to the ongoing shark study. Stannard, of Blairgowries, runs a Facebook site “dedicated purely to the sharks” and the electronic tracks being monitored by Tag For Life. The site has regular updates and at times provides running commentary on movements of a particular shark or shark events and attacks. The Tag For Life organisation works with the CSIRO and NSW Fisheries in placing electronic tags on sharks that transmit information about the predator. Once collated data enables scientists to effectively map the sharks’ movements and correlate this information with water temperatures, movements of fish and animals hunted by sharks and if their journey

is random or repeated. Stannard says five of 14 sharks tagged in the wake of attacks at Byron Bay and Ballina travelled south to Bass Strait, with one passing ocean beaches off the Mornington Peninsula and Phillip Island. Another shark circumnavigated Tasmania before moving to waters off Kangaroo Island in South Australia. The one that came past the peninsula was then tracked to south west of Flinders Island. Stannard discounted reports of a

shark being spotted off Rye as “a hoax. I spoke to the brother of the person who posted on the shark alerts pages. He did it to keep people out of the surf.” Anecdotal evidence is also added to the store of knowledge collected from tagged sharks. “A pilot and commercial fisher once told me that when flying he saw more white sharks close to shore when water temperatures were around 16 degrees, which is near to where we are in central Bass Strait at the minute

while the warmer east Australian current still remains in the far east of the state,” Stannard said, adding how “interesting” it would be to see where a particular shark in Bass Strait would go next. With no lack of public interest in sharks Stannard is about to launch a crowdfunding exercise to raise $40,000 for “a funky old school caravan” to “extend research findings and details about sharks directly to the public”. Stannard says the CSIRO and NSW Fisheries are behind the project and see him as “the bridge” between themselves and the public. “The crowdfunder [on the Pozzible website] will be to purchase the van which we plan to use on the coast as well at schools and events. It will be kitted out with storyboards, TV monitor for videos and be selling products to support science research and education,” he said. “I plan to train volunteers and then hopefully employ them as educators as well as to work out of the van. “It’s our opportunity to present and control messaging which until now has been reliant on mainstream media which constantly creates hype and hysteria. We aim to take the caravan to schools for marine education plus festivals and events.” Stannard said mainly juvenile sharks would be tagged off Ballina this year, “we’re just waiting to see if shark numbers show up there again similar to last year. I suspect they will”. “We’re also planning to tag adult

Recorded attacks THERE have been 1003 recorded shark attacks in Australia since 1791, 232 of them fatal. About one quarter of all shark attacks are fatal and the average is one fatal attack a year. Kent Stannard says that in 2015 there were 33 reported shark/human “interactions”, with 22 being “unprovoked”. “In 2015 the number of unprovoked incidents on humans was 11 more than in 2014 and is above the decadal average of 13 a year,” he said. “NSW recorded 14 unprovoked, including one fatality, Queensland had four, Western Australia two, South Australia and Victoria one each. There was one provoked [attack] pregnant female sharks from SA mid-year as we are trying to locate the western nursery somewhere in the Great Australian Bight.” The program Stannard is connected with has tagged more than 100 sharks with acoustic and 70 with satellite tracking devices which, when added to those tagged by CSIRO and state agencies brings the total of tagged white sharks to “well over” 500. “From the last tagging program off Ballina, three dropped off the radar early on then five transmitted for a period before they dropped off and now we have six still transmitting, three on a regular basis,” Stannard said. He said the satellite tags could transmit for up to 18 months – “long enough to identify movement patterns and pathways” – while pop-off archival tags lasted up to 12 months –

in Tasmania, which resulted in a fatality. “Of the 22 in 2015, 18 involved 15 surfboards and body boards, and 14 of these cases sustained injury, 10 severe and four minor. There were no injuries in the remaining seven cases.” Stannard says the average number of unprovoked shark attacks has increased in recent decades. “In the 1990s it was 6.5 per cent unprovoked cases a year rising to 13 a year over the last decade.” The 22 case reported in 2015 are above the yearly average in each decade; 16 of the 22 involved white sharks, 13 on surfboards, three on surf skis. The average number of fatalities from shark attack over the past 50 years is just under one a year, 0.9 per cent.

“long enough to identify where adults sharks move as well as depths they dive, temperature of the animal”. “Internal acoustic tags are designed to last for up to 10 years and are valuable to establish an animals behaviour over that time.” Stannard said while sharks had been tracked to Rockhampton and the Exmouth Gulf, with many returning to where they were tagged. He refers to sharks having “underwater highways” and nursery areas. “It never ceases to amaze me how these animals can relocate underwater pathways they used previously. “These habitats are generally important to other species as well, so where sharks are located, species important to their diet are usually not far away, such as salmon, snapper and tuna. “We've determined they are not per-

manent residents, only seasonal visitors. “That said, they tend to remember areas that have been good to them and it’s fair to say a shark that turns up at Seal Rocks [off Phillip Island] has probably done so for a number of seasons based on successful hunting techniques. “They have different hunting methods for different food sources. Staying on the bottom for fish and rays while operating in the upper water column using their eyesight to hunt seals.” Stannard said sharks have been monitored diving “beyond 1200 metres, particularly when crossing ocean basins, such as between Australia to New Zealand”. He says the accumulated information about sharks will help governments “develop protocols to minimise the risks they expose to humans and

humans to them”. “Risks such as overfishing are critical to sharks and the importance of inner coastal waters to them for nurseries,” Stannard said. “Tagging also helps determine shark behaviour, why and where they will cluster, for how long, when they arrive and when they leave. This enables shark mitigation protocols to be put in place. “My role is to help scientists find the truth and Tag for Life to function as the delivery mechanism, bridging the gap between scientist and the public. I like to describe myself as a marine educator. “Hopefully, the information I provide helps the welfare of the shark and, at the same time, enables ocean users to make better informed decisions before entering the water.”

Cemetery 100th A CELEBRATION to mark the centenary of the Crib Point Public Cemetery will be held 11am, Monday 9 May, in Disney St. Trust member Roger Stanley said the cemetery had been maintained by volunteers for 100 years and was a repository of local history. The land was reserved in 1915 after Commander Darly, RAN, approached the federal government to make available 10 acres adjoining Flinders Naval Depot – now HMAS Cerberus – for both Navy and public burials. A monument will be unveiled and refreshments served at noon. All welcome.

A DECADE ago two new sandpits were built on the north side of Bittern Pre-school’s outdoor play space. It was always intended that they be joined by connecting pathways so that the children could cart and dump their sand and soil, but this did not happen at the time. The, as at many stand-alone community-run kindergartens, time ran

out, volunteer energy drained away and fund raised money was spent. But, this year, Bendigo Bank came to the rescue with a $1000 donation. A management committee led by four-year-old playgroup teacher Julieanne Jack sprang into action, with recharged drive and a vision. The natural materials used to edge the pathways came from recycled tim-

FLINDERS MP Greg Hunt has pushed the case for Melbourne’s south east suburbs to remain key to climate research to complement a new Climate Science Centre in Hobart announced by the CSIRO last month. The new Hobart hub has put the future of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation’s Aspendale laboratories in doubt amid accusations the decision to favour Tasmania over Victoria is “a political fix to protect marginal seats. The majority of the CSIRO’s climate change research is conducted in Aspendale and Tasmania and the science body is restructuring its nationwide operations, mostly focusing on cuts to climate change research, in the wake of $110 million in federal funding cuts over four years. An internal email from a management member of the CSIRO released last month to a Senate inquiry into the national science body’s plans to axe up to 350 jobs, mostly in climate change research, stated any job losses in Hobart should be minimised. The partially redacted email stated the unnamed CSIRO official would work to “minimise impacts at Hobart – need to address loss of employment in TAS (a regional political issue). Federal Isaacs Labor MP Mark Dreyfus says the CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Centre in Aspendale, where climate research is conducted, is likely to be “gutted for political and not scientific reasons. “After months of campaigning by Labor for Mr Turnbull to reverse these cuts to CSIRO jobs, he has barely reduced the job losses from 350 to 275.

Of the 75 climate researchers now expected to lose their jobs, many of these will be from the CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Centre in Aspendale,â€? Mr Dreyfus said. “This is too little, too late, a lastditch attempt to save the Liberals’ political skin in Tasmania, with next to nothing for Aspendale or Melbourne’s south east.â€? The federal government says the CSIRO is an independent statutory agency governed by a board of directors and as such makes its own operational decisions on where best to allocate funding for scientific research. However, Liberal Environmental Minister Mr Hunt told the ABC he and Industry, Innovation and Science Minister Christopher Pyne had intervened to try to limit CSIRO job losses. “Yes, we did help broker an outcome here ‌ we were very involved and each of us played our role,â€? he told ABC radio. A spokeswoman for Mr Hunt said the Environment Minister had discussed jobs at the Aspendale laboratories behind the scenes. “While CSIRO is an independent organisation and has made its own decisions, Minister Hunt has argued strongly for the continuation of scientific support and staff at Aspendale,â€? Mr Hunt’s electorate communications officer Samantha Robin said. “This has resulted in CSIRO amending its original proposals after Minister Hunt worked with Australia’s Chief Scientist Dr Alan Finkel to ensure strong support for the science community.â€? Australia’s Chief Scientist Dr Alan Finkel backed the establishment of

a climate science research hub, to be staffed by 40 scientists and researchers, in Hobart. “The creation of a national climate research centre is the right move for Australia and I congratulate all the parties involved,â€? Dr Finkel said in a statement. “This announcement recognises the importance of climate research, in particular modelling and observations, to our science and our community. “The new centre is a stable building block in this critical field, which will both inform national policy and meet our international obligations.â€? In February CSIRO deputy CEO Craig Roy signalled the eventual end of scientific research at Aspendale even if climate research funding cuts are reversed. Mr Roy told a senate estimates committee that staff at Aspendale will likely eventually move to CSIRO facilities at Clayton. “It has been signalled. It was signalled, to the organisation, I believe in 2014, that’s it’s our long-term strategy – quite separate from this –to actually move our Aspendale staff,â€? Mr Roy said. “It’s a very old site ‌ it’s not a site that if I was a world-leading scientist coming into a new organisation I’d be proud to walk into. It needs work and so we want to relocate those staff in good time to Clayton anyway.â€? If staff are relocated to Clayton atmospheric records at the Aspendale laboratories will be maintained. CSIRO management is yet to confirm how many jobs will be lost at Aspendale. Neil Walker

Plantings is easy RESIDENTS of South Care Lodge, Hastings, now have easy wheelchair access to three raised garden beds so they can plant and maintain their vegetables. Western Port Men’s Shed members built the heavy timber surrounds at the Victoria St home as part of a community project. “The beds will not only give the residents an interest but also the freedom to be able to do the work themselves,” shed coordinator Colin Prowd said.

Call for panel AN independent panel will be asked to assess plans for the contentious Carrington Park redevelopment at Rosebud. The 13 June panel, to be appointed by Planning Minister Richard Wynne, will specifically consider a request to change the development plan overlay relating to the number of housing lots allowed on the 3.27 hectare site. Mornington Peninsula Shire Council last week considered that modifications to owner Storemaker Pty Ltd’s proposal, including reducing its proposed site density, were required “to ensure an appropriate outcome for this site”. The company wants to subdivide the former golf course into 14 residential lots and also revamp the clubhouse – the 1941 grand holiday home of the Moran grocery family – into six apartments. The current overlay allows for 10 lots. Storemaker advisor Larry Tyler on Friday confirmed that the company had agreed to not alter the building’s shape, including the shape of the roof, and that the proposed third storey would not go ahead.

Historical talk MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire’s heritage manager Rob Austin will speak at the next meeting of the Mornington & District Historical Society, 10.30am, Tuesday 10 May. Enjoy friendship, tea or coffee in the meeting room, Mornington Fire Brigade, Nepean Hwy, Mornington (near the Separation St corner). Cost $5. All welcome.

Ranked beaches THE Environment Protection Authority has ranked Port Phillip Bay beaches and Yarra River locations over summer and nine beaches are named in equal first place for the best recreational water quality. Hampton, Seaford, Portsea, Canadian Bay, Sandringham, Elwood, Rosebud, Santa Casa and Black Rock all offered the best recreational water quality, while Half Moon Bay, Portarlington, Carrum and South Melbourne beaches equalled 10th spot. EPA group manager of applied sciences Anthony Boxshall said each of Port Phillip Bay’s 36 beaches was ranked according to EPA and Melbourne Water’s weekly water quality monitoring data from 1 November 2015 until 10 April this year.

Station revamp THE allocation of $50 million for the redevelopment of the Frankston train station precinct was the headline act for Frankston in this year’s state budget released last week. The cash splash is confirmation of Labor’s preelection promise before the 2014 state election to revamp the station and its surrounds into “state-ofthe-art transport hub”. Frankston Labor MP Paul Edbrooke said the government is keen to push ahead with the station redevelopment to “get it done” despite some questioning the pre-election pledge when $13.1 million for the project was allocated in last year’s state budget. “Some people said they’d believe it when they see it and it’s time to start believing,” Mr Edbrooke said. “This project will transform the station and its surrounds, making it a safe, modern hub for transport, TAFE and shopping.”

Memorial pays tribute to former officer MORNINGTON Peninsula police last week paid tribute to fallen comrade Senior Constable Kevin Laube with a memorial service at the Somerville police complex. The former motorcycle policeman died when his bike collided with a car on Coolart Rd, Somerville, in 1976 – just a stone’s throw from the site of his memorial stone. The award has been a long time coming, but reflects the force’s ethos of looking after its own, however long it takes. Peninsula branch president of the Blue Ribbon Foundation Darryl Nation said it was fitting present-day police could see the memorial stone daily and reflect on the dangers they face and their commitment to each other. “As a police superintendent at Horsham I saw how the community supports its local police and decided to start a branch of the foundation on the peninsula. He said police walked a “thin blue line between risk and personal sacrifice on the one side and keeping society safe on the other. Senior Constable Laube joins 158 other police to die while on duty. Former colleagues of Senior Constable Laube – Terry Mountain, ‘Bluey’ Waugh, Bob Hill, John Welsh and Bob Bodycomb – also attended the ceremony, however, his wife, Eva, still can’t

bear to revisit the traumas of the past. She lives on the Gold Coast. Mr Nation said the memorial stone was designed and its location agreed upon three years

ago – fittingly at the site of the $16.3 million police complex. The Blue Ribbon Foundation raises money for state-of-the-art hospital equipment, and asks

that space for a memorial to a fallen officer be provided. Two other peninsula memorials – at Frankston and Rosebud hospitals – pay tribute to fallen officers Edward Simmons, who died in 1957, and Clive Smith, who died in 1938. Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said Coolart Rd had “a dark history of road trauma and that it was fitting the peninsula’s mobile traffic branch was deployed there. He said police everyday faced inherent dangers in their jobs. “We aspire to bring our people home and aim is to create a safe working environment for our members. Police Chaplain Graeme Watkinson said the community “thanked those who give their lives so that others may live in safety. He said the plaque would serve as a constant reminder of the dangers facing police every day. Stephen Taylor

Shire told to make councillor repay costs Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire officers have been instructed to seek repayment of thousands of dollars alleged to have been overspent by Cr Antonella Celi. In an at times fiery debate, councillors last week agreed that Cr Celi should repay the money allocated to her under her entitlements for conferences and seminars. The motion to pursue Cr Celi for the money was carried on the casting vote of the mayor Cr Graham Pittock after councillors were deadlocked five-five. Cr Celi left the chamber during the debate and vote. Although the original motion put Cr Celi’s overspending at $12,520 the final wording called on her to repay “any sum in excess of the sum of $19,500 on her conferences and seminars account. The latest figures given to council puts Cr Celi’s spending at $28,520. Councillors are generally allowed up to $4000 a year during their fouryear term, although some extra money is allowed for the mayor. Cr Celi was mayor in 2013-2014.

Two days after the vote, Cr Celi told The News that although the motion seeking repayment had been passed, “I do not know the next step. The CEO [Carl Cowie] and [shire] officers will need to check its legal validity. “I didn’t receive any of that money in my account. It was all paid through officer’s delegation or with council approval and resolution. The original notice of motion put by Cr Hugh Fraser to council’s Tuesday 26 April meeting also included a call for Cr Celi to repay costs of legal advice from Maddocks, Lawyers sought by council at her request in March. Although not released publicly, it is understood the advice from Maddocks cast doubts on the shire’s ability to reclaim money from councillors. However, this demand for payment of Maddocks’ fees was dropped, as was an earlier notice of motion from Cr Fraser for council to meet the legal costs surrounding conflict-of-interest action in 2012 by the Local Government Investigation and Compliance Inspectorate against Cr Pittock. Cr Fraser would not tell The News why he withdrew the move for the shire to pay Cr Pittock’s legal bills. Cr Pittock, now mayor, told The News the motion was withdrawn be-

cause he had not yet added up all the bills, which he estimated at $50,000 to $60,000, “but I don’t know if the shire would pay. Cr Pittock, who was found guilty and fined $4000, said a precedent had been set by another municipality which covered the legal costs of a councillor involved “in the same sort of case as mine. “But it [the move to seek payment] won’t go back on the agenda; it won’t be going back to council, Cr Pittock said. Cr Celi said she had since “flagged Mr Cowie to inform councillors if “any other approaches or conversations are made regarding the shire being paying Cr Pittock’s legal bills. Ian Lyons, a former mayor of Mordialloc and now a peninsula resident who was at the council meeting, said he felt it was inappropriate for Cr Pittock to have used his casting vote to pass the motion. “The mayor’s second vote should be used to maintain the status quo, and that would have meant not requiring Cr Celi to repay the money, Mr Lyons said. “She is good value [as a councillor] and I see this as a pretty dirty bit of politics.

Mr Lyons said some of Cr Celi’s costs had gone towards her studies for a Diploma in Local Government “which councillors were being urged to do by the premier, at the time as well as attending functions or meetings on behalf of other councillors. Cr Fraser, who moved the notice of motion, told The News he expected Cr Celi to repay the money in much the same way that state and federal MPs did if they went beyond their allowances. He said councillors had been given the opportunity for a one-on-one with shire officers to correct any anomalies in their expenses, which were first revealed in January. The latest figures given to councillors show Cr Celi spent $28,520 on conferences and seminars. Cr David Gibb ($15,862) and Cr Fraser ($15,420) come second and third respectively. The next highest is Cr Bev Colomb (still identified on the council document as being the mayor) with $12,487, followed by Cr Tim Rodgers ($11,832), Cr Pittock ($10,091), Cr Lyn Bowden ($7487), Cr David Garnock ($4009), Cr Andrew Dixon ($3396) and Cr Tim Wood ($376). Former councillor Frank Martin, who was replaced by Wood in August 2015, spent $7806. Cr Celi said she was always careful

to “do the right thing. “Nothing ever came back [from council officers] saying no, so I always assumed due diligence was being done. “As far as I know all those authorisations were signed off in accordance with shire policy. Cr Celi said the shire’s policy on councillor spending limits was “ambiguous and needs to be clearer. “There’s nothing there to indicate retrospective payments. The officers would have [only] authorised [payments] within the policy. Cr Celi said the situation had been different when Cr Pittock and Cr Fraser had gone to international climate change talks in Paris late last year “because the $16,000 spending limit was made clear to them. “They knew up front they would have to pay if they exceeded the limit. Cr Celi said there had never been mention of retrospectivity made to her and being asked to repay the money “has come out of the blue. “I’m being asked to repay money that was not even put in my account, she said. “We’ll see what happens, it’s a very questionable resolution. I’ve done nothing untoward, everything was authorised.

Batter beware: Genevieve Beacom doing what she loves: pitching – hard – against the boys.

Pitching in and breaking down barriers Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au NOT one to let the boys have all the fun, Genevieve Beacom, of Somerville, revelled in her role as the only girl to represent the under-12 Little League Southern Mariners Charter at the Victorian Little League Baseball championships, Jells Park, over the Easter holidays. Her strong pitching helped her team win its way into the grand final and be

crowned state champions. The Southern Mariners will now go to Lismore in June to compete in the Australian Little League Championships. But that’s only the beginning: the winner will then go on to the United States to compete in the World Little League championships – something only a few junior players can even dream about. Genevieve, in grade 6 at Flinders Christian College, produced an outstanding pitching effort at Jells Park to ensure the Mariners a berth at the

Australian championships. Playing at that standard is a tough call – for Genevieve and her parents Chrysanne and Brendon – with training Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at either Sandringham or Cheltenham, and games on weekends at the State Baseball Centre, Altona. But achieving such a high standard requires application and dedication, and lots of driving. “I love pitching,” Genevieve said last week. “It’s my favourite position and I play it as much as I can.”

Playing with a girl can be a challenge for some of her male teammates. “Some of the boys get a little bit jealous, but others just treat me like one of them,” she said. The lure of playing against teams from all over the world is an exciting prospect. “It’s something I always wanted to do.” Mrs Beacom says it is “very unusual for a girl to do so well”, adding that her daughter “probably throws the hardest and the fastest in the team”. Battling preconceived ideas – that a

girl can be as good, or better, than the boys – is another challenge Genevieve has overcome. “She is something of a role model, with other girls inspired by what she has done,” Mrs Beacom said. “There are stereotypes about what boys and girls can do and she’s broken all that down: she doesn’t expect any favours, it just fires her up. “To achieve what she has, even if she were a boy, is amazing as she is at the bottom age and can play again next year.”

Keepers farewell light on the hill CAPE Schanck lighthouse keepers Tony and Prue Sheers have said goodbye to their former workplace and B&B accommodation business after 20 years, with the 1859 light coming under the control of Parks Victoria this week. Parks has assumed the day-to-day running of the site until, it says, a commercial lease is signed with a new tenant. It will offer free visitor access into the light station reserve from Wednesday 4 May. Visitors will be able to explore the reserve grounds during normal park opening hours. The car park, picnic areas and toilets are open, while access to the surrounding scenic

features via walking tracks, lookouts and boardwalk at Cape Schanck are unchanged. The Sheers revelled in their role and regarded it as a rare privilege to guard and protect such a precious treasure at the most southern end of the peninsula – as well as upholding a tradition steeped in history. For the couple, having the occupation “lighthouse keeper” stamped in their passports was an unexpected bonus, and came at a time when they were considering semi-retirement. “One day Tony just came home from work and said ‘How would you like to run a lighthouse?’” Prue said. “That was 20 years ago and

we are just finishing up now.” The couple were involved in hospitality and running B&Bs all their lives, so taking over the lighthouse was easy – with Prue’s fascination for history making it a perfect match. History abounds, with 59 spiral steps leading up the 21 metre limestone tower, with the original counterweight still hanging down the centre. The beam shines 48 kilometres out to sea, with its 1000-watt globe still sitting in its original mercury bath. The Sheers will continue living at Fingal while running a motel in Ballarat. Family ties inform author’s Rebellion “It may be called the finest thing in Australasian history. It was a revolution – small in size but great politically; it was a strike for liberty, a struggle for principle, a stand against injustice and oppression. … It is another instance of a victory won by a lost battle” Mark Twain, Following the Equator (1897) WHEN Fran Henke wanted someone to launch her latest historical novel she had to look no further than at the words she had written. Kerry McNarn, district nurse, wedding celebrant whose name and personality form the basis for a “character” used in two of Henke’s books readily agreed to step from the pages of Winds of Rebellion for its public release. In a self-reflective moment Henke questions the professionalism of using the names and personalities of friends in a work of fiction and then supplies the answer: “Maybe, but enormous fun yes.” An artist, journalist, author and accomplished photographer, Henke is well known for her long running Council Watcher column with the former Independent News Group. Her latest book Winds of Rebellion - the second of the A Fair Wind trilogy - is about how far Australians can be pushed before they say enough. The first book of the trilogy, Other Side of the Wind, was published for Henke’s 70th birthday in 2013. This second book is based on events and players at the time of the Eureka rebellion on the Ballarat goldfields. “It carries some of the characters from the first book into the tense months of 1854, when ordinary people became caught up in extraordinary events,” Henke says. At that time, she says, miners on the Ballarat and Bendigo goldfields were willing to pay for a licence – “also known as a tax” - but wanted a say in how the goldfields were run. They held meetings and organised deputations to authorities. “The government, paranoid about the number of so called foreigners on the goldfields, had a fortified camp for soldiers and troopers. So miners built a ramshackle stockade of shaft timbers,” Henke says. “Men were asleep there on Sunday 3 December 1854 when 276 soldiers and police arrived, shooting and slashing, burning nearby tents with families inside. “An estimated 60 people died either that morning or later – of those, six were troopers. So it wasn’t a rebellion, more like a massacre.” Henke’s tale is from the point of view of people in Geelong, “the rest, recreation and restocking point for the Ballarat goldfields”. She feels drawn to Ballarat as it was

the birthplace of her mother and her maternal grandfather was a miner, who allegedly lost his leg saving a cage full of miners at Kalgoolie. “I met him once, with his wooden leg, suggesting to him that he had a leg like mine, which is in a caliper,” Henke, a polio survivour, says. “While the first book The Other Side of the Wind was set in Geelong because of the intriguing story told me by a friend about her ancestors landing there – we had family members there too in the wool business. “When writing both books, I was conscious that my mum, who became dependent on talking books in later years, was hearing material not to her conservative taste. So I wanted my fiction to be challenging and interesting, yet not to offend.” But starting Rebellion and finishing it had its own challenges. After eight chapters “serious family matters” saw the book set aside and Henke being “actually afraid to start writing again”, uncertain of being able to again become immersed in the past. Rejuvenation came after finishing and publishing In Yer Face The Bald Archy Prize, a collaboration with Peter Batey in July last year. “I knew I wanted to keep writing. Period details and history returned; subsequent chapters went down really easily – except for the events of 3 December. Writing about senseless death of people and animals doesn’t come easy.” Henke’s editor Mike Hast [also a journalist and now a sometime contributor the The News] suggested Henke illustrate the text with linocuts, something they had already tried with the cover of the first book. “I majored in printmaking at Chisholm six years ago. And I enjoyed making small images of native flowers while he edited – asking endless questions, checking my research as only Mike can. “Again we had the argument about the actual date of Victoria’s separation, the date it was proclaimed by the Queen, 1850, or the date it was enacted, 1851.” Henke, secretary of the Australian Taxation Reform Group, is involved in making submissions to the Henry Review and a White Paper. “I didn’t really want to pitch this book as being about an unfair tax, yet of course it is. read a novel about tax?” she says. “But it’s more than that of course. It’s about how this generation came to enjoy the right to vote, to have a say, to protest. This story is particularly special – dedicated to my husband Ian who has paid dearly for his right to protest, to help people who felt helpless against the system. I put the dedication at the end because I didn’t want readers to think I had an axe to grind.” Henke has dedicated Rebellion to

her husband Ian Henke for his “courage, perseverance and dignity in the face of government tyranny”. Ian Henke was jailed in 2011for taking a stance against the current tax regime. Once the book was underway Henke realised her original plan for a trilogy was still possible and has applied for a State Library fellowship to research the third, “taking the story up to Federation, another family passion”. “The extraordinary stories of the

Eureka rebellion and Federation deserve to be better known,” she says. “After 50 years of journalism I reckon I can make what might seem heavy yarns interesting. That was my job: to take complex issues of government, parliament, council, science, the arts, make them even entertaining.” In recent months, after 25 years of advocating to state and federal government about the needs of Australia’s estimated 400,000 polio survivors (the country’s largest physical disability group) she resigned from the Polio Reference Group and the Board of Polio Australia. Her aim was to concentrate on writing and printmaking (“having just been given a splendid etching press”) but the death of then Mornington Peninsula Post-Polio Support Group chairman Dennis Lloyd has seen her take on some of his work. A further block to Henke’s writing and printmaking comes each year with organising the Mornington Peninsula’s Winter Blanket Appeal, coordinating knitters to make blankets and clothing for needy families through Southern Peninsula Food for All. This year the appeal is seeking beanies, scarves, mittens and children’s jumpers to about age 10. “Like many so-called retired people I am busy, but finally and in between, concentrating on the dream of making books and pictures,” Henke says. “Polio took away some potential in life, but gave me much more – especially a love of words, music and images. It also showed me the need for each of us to do whatever we can to help each other and to speak up about injustice – whatever the cost.” The public launch of Winds of Rebellion is 2pm Sunday 15 May at Oak Hill Gallery, Mornington-Tyabb Rd, Mornington. LETTERS Minster’s ‘poor form’ I believe Skylift developer Simon McKeon has gone to the big end of town because he wants to make Mornington Peninsula Shire Council a scapegoat for delays in the project (“Council loses power over Skylift”, The News 12/4/16). Planning Minister Richard Wynne’s decision to call in the Skylift project is nothing more than a servile stance. Mr McKeon claims councillors do not have the expertise in planning and building. If he cared to do some homework he would note that one councillor has a university degree in building. Another is a former vice-president of VCAT who, as QC, was an expert in building and planning law before his appointment to the bench. Two councillors hold science degrees and another has degrees in law. It was council which approved the Skylift, an important fact conveniently left unsaid by McKeon and Mr Wynne. Rather, the affected objectors went to VCAT, and it was VCAT which upheld council’s decision. It is not right for Mr McKeon to say “we just want to build this according to our plans, which were approved by VCAT”. It was Mr McKeon who wanted to amend the VCAT approved plans. Mr McKeon wanted to change the retaining wall system with a block-type wall because the VCAT approved system could only be sourced from interstate. Mr McKeon wanted red gondolas, contravening a VCAT condition which stipulated a schedule of external colours that would complement the natural landscape. Council correctly decided red did not. Mr McKeon sought council support to relocate some pylons, which cuncil agreed to and was subsequently approved by VCAT. So, a hard look at the facts does not support McKeon’s assertions that council has been difficult to deal with. For Richard Wynne to willingly accept wild and ignorant accusations without seeking council’s response shows very poor form on his part. Tim Wood, QC, councillor Mornington Peninsula Shire

Same charge, new name At last Mornington Peninsula Shire has dropped the “municipal charge” (“Rate changes a ‘fairer’ system – mayor”, The News, 12/4/16). This was always a shifty or, in my opinion, dishonest second rate, applied simply because they could get away with it. But wait, they’ve replaced it with exactly the same, except for a name change to waste service charge ($193 this year). We pay our rates to include waste, then we pay a second time with this levy, then we even pay a third time if we dump rubbish at the tip. Has council no moral or ethics? This shire is awash with money. The proposed budget allows for a million surplus which could easily accommodate the total costs of all waste, stated to be $19 million, thus eliminating the need for this greedy levy without any cost to anyone. Surely the state government should oversee this? While we need waste disposal we certainly don’t need councillors’ fantasies such as the shire being “carbon neutral in five years” (precipitated by a trip to Paris by a council threesome). Nor do we need some other shire “services” that are quietly doing nothing useful, just inflating the shire’s wages bill to nearly a third of all expenditure. Considering that an awful lot of the shire’s work is now contracted out,’the true need for staff is minimal. Our archaic third tier of government badly needs reform, if not abandonment. The best solution would be for all rates to be collected by the state government which could then fund all councils and scrutinise the justification for funds. This $193 (increasing) levy is not needed and is in blatant defiance of the state 2.5 percent cap on rate increases. Brian A Mitchelson, Mornington

Heavy-handed It is understandable that the Australian Federal Police is getting concerned about our dear [Flinders MP] Greg Hunt and his and the Turnbull government’s treatment of the refugees, the environment, and the rorting of our tax system by the rich and multinational companies (“Police checks before MP meets grannies”, The News 5/4/16). When the peoples’ protests are getting louder, the obvious solution is to frighten them into submission by the application of the heavy hand of

the law. Mr Hunt conveniently forgot to mention all the children in detention in our concentration camps on Nauru and Manus Island. I can understand that he feels a little under the pump with all that baggage he and his government carry. Rupert Steiner, Balnarring Beach

Doing voters proud Ann Renkin and her lovely ladies, who sought a chat with Flinders MP and Environment Minister Greg Hunt were lucky they were not strip searched, obviously the feds and local had to make sure they were not packing (“Police checks before MP meets grannies”, The News 5/4/16). Why anyone would seek an audience with Mr Hunt is beyond me, so far he has managed to allow a massive coal mine in Queensland, dredge Abbotts Point near the Great Barrier Reef, and still remain Minister for the Environment. His voters on the Mornington Peninsula must be very proud of him. Ron O’Toole, Mt Eliza

No new coal mines What does Flinders MP and Environment Minister Greg Hunt’s approval of the Carmichael Coal Mine in Queensland really mean for Australia and, indeed, the world? Effectively, this approval goes against all that the scientists are telling us about the detrimental effects of CO2 going into our atmosphere. Let’s be very clear, CO2 or carbon dioxide, has no boundaries in the atmosphere. Global warming and thus climate change is real and will have dire consequences for the whole planet if we keep burning fossil fuels such as coal and oil. We are being told we must seriously reduce the burning of these fuels, with most authorities saying we must keep what is left of these fossil fuels in the ground. The Carmichael mine is massive, possibly the world’s largest new coal mine, producing about 120 million tonnes of coal annually, and approximately 90 per cent of this coal is carbon. Some very simple maths for burning coal to give the amount of CO2 emitted per tonne gives us a figure of about 407 million tonnes of CO2 emitted when burnt. This mine will add approximately four per cent to the world’s total CO2 emissions annually. Seeing as this mine should have a life span of 90 years, again the maths is simple. And this does not take into account the emissions from the mining operations and shipping. Other detrimental effects of mining coal which are of major concern, but clearly not to Mr Hunt, include the effect that dredging and shipping will have on the Great Barrier Reef. No new coal mines should be opened as the consequences of global warming will make the world we live in very different indeed. Andrew Raff and Peter North, Tuerong

Esplanade cycling I agree with Ken Anderson (“Ban esplanade bikes”, Letters 29/3/16) regarding banning cyclists on The Esplanade between Mt Martha and Safety Beach. I like cycling, but there is no way that I would ride a bike along that road as it is too dangerous and hazardous for both cyclists and motorists. Unless a proper bike path is built next to the road, cyclists should be banned from using it as it is a narrow road with a lot of blind corners and people will be killed soon if something is not done about it. There are plenty of other safer roads to cycle on and some even have bike paths, although not enough main roads have these. I usually find myself riding on the roads with vehicles due to a lack of bike paths available when I go on a 20 or 30 kilometre ride regardless of which direction or route I take. The registration plate idea has been mentioned before and it would be good to identify cyclists that cause danger or accidents to others. Riding abreast should also be banned and I still see this practice occurring; an accident waiting to happen. The Mornington Peninsula council needs to have a good look at this and take it seriously. Patrick Geeves, Somerville

Why Cardiac Rehabilitation Is Good For You Heart Week 1-7 May, 2016

HEART Week shines a spotlight on Australia’s heart health. This year, The Heart Foundation of Australia is talking about how attending cardiac rehabilitation after a heart attack can save lives, with research indicating that those who attend a structured cardiac rehabilitation program are 40% less likely to suffer another heart attack. What is Cardiac rehabilitation? Cardiac rehabilitation is a supervised program that helps you recover from an acute heart event such as a heart attack, heart surgery or other procedures (stent insertion and angioplasty). At St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital, we have many patients coming directly to our hospital from their acute hospital. We work closely to assist them with their recovery and building their strength before returning home. Our patients have a personalised rehabilitation program created to cater for their individual needs. We can also assess their home environment to ensure they can safely return home. Many of our inpatients continue their rehabilitation with us as an outpatient. Our outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program is a rolling six week group based program incorporating twice weekly sessions of exercise combined with education. The program helps people lead healthier, more active lives.

Dr. Floyd Gomes of Atticus Health Medical Centre, talks about the correlation between business, speed and anxiety. I’ve often wondered about the word “business”. I own a business, so it’s of interest to me. Ok - Old English - bisignis = anxiety. Then, the development of the word in Middle English went to busyness = the state of being busy. And so it was, the word “business” was derived. So, the question is, as a consequence of my endeavours in being an owner of a business, am I doing little more than making my staff busily anxious. Running medical clinics, and with anxiety and depression so prominent in our society, I certainly didn’t want to do that. I’d be a hypocrite. However, business provides a “service” to the community in some shape or form. The question is - is it required to be “anxious” whilst working in a business. Then it struck me, a major cause of anxiety is speed. I wonder if we all slowed down - what would happen? Once again, I’m guilty here. I’m open for “business” on a Sunday - that’s ripping my staff off from the opportunity to slow down on this day. I’d convince myself that - well, we run a medical clinic, and we HAVE to open, people need us, but truly, I think that’d be a statement of ego more than truth. I think the truth is - I have to compete. Competition, speed, business, anxiety. Gosh, is there any hope? Well yes, provided we sometimes step back and realise that this is all a part of our day, and step away, with a thought. For one moment, I’m not going to compete and I’m going to take things slowly. I may still engage in “business” - doing something I love,

in a meaningful way, appreciating my skills and those of my colleagues, contributing to my “village”, and keeping busy doing such things. But, perhaps for one moment, do it slowly. Don’t compete. And enjoy the moment of what it is you actually do, how you do it and why you do it. If you’re an employer - perhaps consider giving your staff a little more time to do this, to enjoy their job and not have to rush all day. Chances are, they’ll engage with their role more, and do a better job, if they have the time to truly absorb it.

operation.”

*** LETTERS From The Front. The following extracts are taken from a letter from Private “Sandy” Bray, to his parents, which was received this week:— Since writing last we have been transferred from the trenches and I am now in the artillery. It is altogether different from the other work. The weather is now very hot. Australia is nothing to it. We go about in nothing but short pants and a helmet, and are as brown as a copper kettle. Before we were transferred there was a sports meeting and I won the 100 yards handicap. As this is the second I have won over here I must be pretty fit. Nearly all the boys from Frankston are here now. Bert Roberts is back from England and looking well. We are having a good time in the artillery and are being fitted out with everything new. I have not seen Roger Burton, but Dick Davies told me he saw him at Zeitoun. Athol Hague is an orderly in the hospital at Heliopolis, he has grown a lot and looks in the pink of condition. We get well looked after in the provision line and are supplied with bacon, cheese, condensed milk, dried figs etc, so there is nothing to complain about, and I never felt better, I will close now. I can’t say our next move, but think it will be soon. *** From the pages of the Mornington Standard, 6 May, 1916

THE SCREAMING JETS LOVE THEIR CHROME By Terri Lee Fatouros Australia’s iconic classic rock band The Screaming Jets are back after an eight-year hiatus between albums, with their latest and greatest new release entitled Chrome. This seventh studio album has been a labour of love, with a mix of new songs that has a slightly new bent to their sound, to say the least, leaving the boys wildly excited with the finished product. The Screaming Jets will be touring and showcasing their new material, but keeping authentic to their rockin’ history by pulling out all their biggest hits along the way. I chatted to Dave Gleeson recently and this is what the effervescent front man had to say. “We are really excited to have the new album and realize it has been too long in between but nevertheless we are pumped. We actually played a bunch of the new songs during our tour in December last year, when Chrome was supposed to be released, and were delighted with the response. Paul Woseen wrote the bulk of the songs and Jimi Hocking and I wrote a couple as well. It was a great process working with Paulie, as he came in with about 25 acoustics. We listened to them

all and then whittled it down to the songs we wanted to concentrate on, then built them up from there, which was a first, really. Paulie writes awesome rock songs, awesome in their arrangement, and he’s a great lyricist. I can’t wait to hear what people think of the album!” Recently The Jets gigged with legendary guitarist/songwriter, Rockin’ Rob Riley at the Boom Boom Room in Adelaide. Riley is best known for churning out remarkable songs for Rose Tattoo, Dallimore and The Party Boys. Slash from Guns n Roses claims Riley is his favourite guitarist of all times. Laughs Gleeson, “On the night I might have had a couple of sherbets before the show, but that’s because I was enjoying Rob’s gig. He’s a great guitar player and I just love his voice.” I assured him most fans would realize that’s just “Dave being Dave.” Chuckling, he said, “There’s two kind of vibes for me. Obviously when we do our shows and go on tour, you can’t go on stage too loose, but when it comes to playing parties and stuff... well, I let loose and get into my songs.” It certainly appears it is a formula fans enjoy because for the last few years, The Jets have

been doing one tour a year, keeping their loyal supporters in the loop and staying active in the industry.

to keep an eye out for the vinyl version of Chrome because Gleeson told me there will be a run on.

However, with their latest album Chrome being officially launched during their forthcoming national tour in May, this may very well change.

The Screaming Jets are your classic, loud rock band and in Gleeson’s words, “We are not old blokes simply going through the motions – classic rock is a genre. To me it’s two guitars, bass, great lead breaks, drums, great chorus, meaningful songs and everything from Aerosmith and AC/DC to The Angels. Supporting us is a band called Massive, comprising a bunch of guys in their 20s who embrace the true classic rock band image and sound. They don’t sound old and jaded, rather new and fresh and are totally in the mode of classic rock. That’s what we are too, and proudly so.”

“This is the first time we’ve released this sort of album in this brave new world of digital music. But keep in mind there’s still plenty of stuff we want to do in an old-school format, like recording a full album rather than recording a song here and there. We still want to connect with people from our past, and as a band continuing on, we want to connect and bring on board people hearing us for the first time as well. Chrome deals with everything from domestic violence, redemption, and raunchiness to homelessness. So many different topics are covered – hopefully we’ll be able to please our old fans and get some new ones as well.” Gleeson rather enjoys the odd vinyl or two and recently dusted off his record player and got into a vintage collection he’s had stashed for years. I guess enthusiasts would be advised

JAZZ HANDS AT THE READY… Mornington Street corners, bars and restaurants will come alive over the Queen’s Birthday Weekend, June 10 – 12, as some of the biggest names in the business hit town for the fourth annual Mornington Winter Jazz Festival. The 2016 festival is set to take things to a whole new level with the introduction of a new Blues program which will be jam packed with some of Mornington Peninsula’s favourite artists! The 2015 festival was a huge success, with more than 116 performances in and around Mornington, and this year festival organisers the Mornington Chamber of Commerce are aiming to raise the bar even further. Multi-ARIA nominee Frank Bennett kicks things off at The Rocks on Friday, June 10. Bennett’s uncanny ability to recapture the magic of Sinatra in concert has made him one of the most popular and sought after entertainers in Australia today. Friday evening also plays host to a great blues line up at The Grand Hotel with local favourites Wilson & White, Diddy Reyes and Rob Papp’s Blues Head supporting the unmissable Soul Sacrifice, Melbourne’s best Santana touring band. Off the back of an epic performance in 2015, soul singers Vika Bull and Adrew DeSilva (pictured) are set to draw a crowd to their performance ‘Let’s Get It On, The Life and Music of Marvin Gaye’ at the Grand Hotel Sunday June 12. Likewise, Vince Jones returns to Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery on Saturday June 11 with a new and unique show created exclusively for the Mornington Winter Jazz Festival.

There are also a heap of great free performances in and around town all weekend including a killer blues line up at Double G Saloon, Jazz-A-Thon at Leaf and Bean, a jam packed showcase of jazz at Gods Kitchen and for the latin lovers, newly opened Casa De Playa presents La Rumba who will have you dancing till the wee hours of Saturday night! Between Friday and Sunday there are over 50 performances available for you to experience ranging from intimate Jazz dinner shows to dance floor take over swing and blues sessions including the ever popular Mick Pealing and band at the Bay Hotel Sunday afternoon. For something a little more unique, Brooklands of Mornington are hosting a one of a kind Chefs Choice 5 Course Dining Experience on Friday evening accompanied by an evening of Jazz in the Eighteen78 dining room. Bookings can be made directly with the venue. For a toe tapping good time, The Royal Hotel has created their very own ‘Jazz Club’ offering a night of swing and splendour with the Gatsby Swing performing classics of the roaring 20’s and 30’s. Of course Saturday and Sunday will offer a wide variety of free street entertainment with roving bands parading the Main Street and children’s entertainment to keep the little ones enthralled too! Tickets are Now On Sale! The full program and event information can be found online at www.morningtonjazz.com.au or by contacting Mornington Chamber of Commerce on 5975 4522 (Mon-Wed).

PASSION PLAY By Andrea Louise Thomas

Actor/producer Ross Balbuziente was born for the stage. The acting bug bit him in high school and he never looked back. He studied drama and then went straight into professional acting work. In 2006 he co-founded shake & stir theatre co. Now celebrating their tenth anniversary, shake & stir are bringing Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights to the stage in spectacular fashion. Balbuziente is playing Heathcliff to rave reviews. I spoke with him prior to Wuthering Heights arriving at Frankston Arts Centre. MINT: What’s it like playing one of literature’s most complicated characters? BALBUZIENTE: It’s a hell of a ride, but also incredibly fulfilling. You don’t often get to sink your teeth into such a complex character. I get to do it once or twice a day! It’s emotionally and physically draining, but you’d shortchange an audience if you didn’t go as deep as you can in each performance. You have to bring 100% especially when you’re playing such an iconic character. MINT: How did you prepare for the role? BALBUZIENTE: A lot of foundation work was done reading and re-reading and trying to find justification and understanding of what he wants in order to really delve into the conflicted mind of this poor guy who is often completely misunderstood. MINT: This is a highly technical production. Do you find any of it distracting? BALBUZIENTE: Technically it’s pushing the boundaries, but we were really fortunate to have had all of that technicality in the rehearsal room right from the get go. There’s a really beautiful harmony with our design

team. MINT: How do “the elements” play a part in Wuthering Heights? BALBUZIENTE: All four elements feature live on stage speaking to the internal/external conflict. These characters are hell bent on

keeping the tempestuous weather outside, but it comes into their homes and infects their lives and their minds and for some it’s their ultimate demise. Then there are other liberating moments when the characters run outside into the weather. It’s always playing to the question of what happens when the

outside comes inside figuratively and literally. MINT: What’s the most challenging aspect of this production? BALBUZIENTE: Maintaining focus for every performance and really trying to dig deep into the emotional blackness that Heathcliff definitely experiences. MINT: You’re also the Co-Artistic Director of Shake and Stir, what doe this role entail? BALBUZIENTE: The artistic director makes all artistic decisions for the company. We program every single thing. We also lead our very dedicated team of 15 full-time people. We’re all in it together. We each take different roles to create, be that writing, directing or acting. MINT: Why Wuthering Heights? BALBUZIENTE: It’s a classic that we collectively love for a lot of different reasons. Gothic literature really speaks to us and excites us. We love the book so we remain incredibly faithful to the original. Artistically we then put a whole other spin on it and a) reimagine the book for some or b) introduce this epic saga to others. MINT: What’s next for you? BALBUZIENTE: We’re back in Brisbane for a production of Samuel Beckett’s End Game. That’s our newest work. We’re doing that at QPAC (Queensland Performing Arts Centre). See Shake and Stir’s incredibly talented team bring Wuthering Heights to life at Frankston Arts Centre on Friday, May 13 at 12:30 pm or 7:30 pm. Bookings: 9784 1060 or thefac. com.au Photo by Dylan Evans.

TASTE OF SORRENTO Historical, seaside Sorrento is again hosting its mouth-watering food, wine and beer festival during the first weekend in June, and it’s set to be the best yet. The program includes a variety of gastronomical delights including masterclasses, cooking demonstrations, tutored tastings, degustations, gourmet menus, foodies’ market and more, all in the heart of Sorrento village. Starting Thursday evening and continuing throughout the weekend, a variety of gourmet lunches, dinners and classes will take place in restaurants, cafes and even the demonstration kitchen in the “Taste” marquee hosted at the Claret & Co (previously Three Palms) courtyard at 154 Ocean Beach Road. Taste of Sorrento is proud to play host to several highly-acclaimed chefs and food writers in this year’s event, who’ll present masterclasses not to be missed. Just a few of these include: • Jacques Reymond (pictured) – Michelin star and three-hatted chef • Adrian Li – Saigon Sally • Adam D’Sylva – executive chef at Coda and Tonka in Melbourne • Paul Mercurio – chef, author and TV presenter • Bob Hart – food writer, broadcaster (3AW and the Herald Sun), chef, author (Heat And Smoke, 1 And 11 – Mastering the Dark Art of Real Barbeque) The highly popular foodies’ market and “Taste” day will be extended in 2016 to feature across 2 days! From 10am to 3pm on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June, producers, provedores, wineries and brewers will put out their best gourmet supplies while a series of demonstrations are provided in the Marquee kitchen. With music and kids’

entertainment filling the street, it will be a great day for tasting, sipping, listening and indulging in the best that Sorrento and the Mornington Peninsula have to offer. With many more interesting boutique activities all set in a spectacular, historic seaside village only 90 minutes south of Melbourne, or a relaxing 40 minutes by ferry across the bay from the Queenscliff, Taste of Sorrento is a great way to treat the senses and embrace all that winter has to offer. A full event program is available at www. tasteofsorrento.com.au, or you can download the Sorrento – Live the Life app from the App Store or Google Play to make direct bookings and find event locations. Brought to you by the Sorrento-Portsea Chamber of Commerce and proudly supported by Searoad Ferries, with thanks to sponsors Mornington Peninsula Shire, Tourism Victoria, Bayside Automotive Group and the Mornington Peninsula News Group.

scoreboard Bulls charge home for a draw PENINSULA LEAGUE

By Toe Punt KARINGAL almost doubled its score in the final 16 minutes of the match to draw against Seaford in Peninsula Division football on Saturday. At the 12-and-a-half minute mark of the final quarter at Ballam Park, Tigers’ star Aaron Walton kicked his second goal of the afternoon and put his side 30 points in front. At that stage, it was the biggest margin of the day and a Karingal revival looked remote. However, led by a dominating Grant Goodall in the ruck, Cal Dixon through the middle, Michael Burke in attack and Aaron Paxton and best on ground Duncan Proud in defence, the Bulls unleashed the shackles and attacked the top of the square. The Bulls booted 4.8 in a frantic final 16 minutes before the siren sounded with the scoreboard reading 9.17 (71) to 10.11 (71). Seaford completely stopped running at the ten minute mark of the last quarter. Had it not been for the experience of Dean Williamson and Kyle Matthews in the tense final minutes, Seaford probably would have been overrun completely. It was a special day for three-time Seaford premiership player Joe Hallal, who ran out for the 200th time after making his debut in 2000. The day wasn’t so special for gun Karingal recruit and full forward Leigh Poholke, who left the field in the opening term with what appeared to be an ACL injury. Scans will confirm through the week. Jackson Mockett was superb for the Tigers and one of their best with a game

high four goals, while Matt Herbert was outstanding in the first half. This week should see the return of Jake Kelly and Chris Hay for the Bulls. A Shane Paterson led Langwarrin booted 12 goals to one in the second half against Edithvale-Aspendale to notch its first win of the 2016 season. With Kangas president Dave Nelli telling the RPP Footy Show on Saturday morning that the club had embarked on a rebuilding strategy, the evergreen Paterson did everything he

could to ensure that his young charges got over the line, 12.13 (85) to 9.12 (66). The Eagles led by 22 points at half time after making the most of the strong wind, however, could only manage just one more goal for the game. Paterson took control of the team while coach Brad Dredge got married (the day was planned before he was offered the Langwarrin coaching job). Kieran Albanese continued his strong start to the season with four majors for the Kangas while Blake Peach played

his best game of the season with three goals. Angus Macguire and Lochie Brodie were the best of the Eagles, while the more experienced Tim Mannix and Jeremy Heys worked tirelessly. Pines blew Mornington out of the water with a seven goal to two opening quarter and were never challenged after that, winning for the first time since the late 1990’s at Alexandra Park, 18.15 (123) to 12.11 (83). A fit and firing Tim Bongetti booted

seven goals for the Pythons in a devastating display while Paul Scanlon and Luke Potts dominated through the middle of the ground. Warwick and Joel Miller were once again the best of the Doggies while Will Goosey played his best ever game of senior footy. Bonbeach coach Steve Hughes told the RPP Footy Show live in the studio on Saturday morning that his side had nothing to lose and everything to gain against the yardstick of the competition in Frankston YCW. After a 23.10 (148) to 4.10 (34) whipping, it would have been hard for Hughes to take away any positives. The Sharks are now the only side in the competition without a win and sit on the bottom of the table. The Stonecats had nine goal kickers with Dave Bodley booting six and Paul Minchington, Anthony Bruhn, Lew Roberts and Sam Widdowson all kicking three each, while two of the most exciting players in the competition, Ryley Hodson and Ben Credlin, dominated. Shane McDonald, Chris Bryan and Beau Bailey were the best of the Sharks. Mt Eliza trailed Chelsea by four points at half time on Saturday before booting eight goals to one in the third to blow the game apart. The final score was 14.8 (92) to 6.16 (52). Nick Strickland booted four for the winners while a further eight players contributed on the scoreboard. Anthony Cleary was outstanding. Josh Tripcony and Grant Trew were fine contributors for the Gulls, along with Jack Francis.

Blues sit on the top of the table NEPEAN LEAGUE By Toe Punt HASTINGS remains unbeaten and on top of the Nepean Division ladder after a fighting victory against Devon Meadows on Saturday. The Blues let a large lead slip in the third quarter and the opposition drew level at one stage, before the Blues settled with a couple of goals and went on to win 17.12 (114) to 14.11 (95). The enigmatic Colin McVeigh had a quiet start to the afternoon but a masterstroke from runner Peter Mereszko saw the Blues star shifted to full forward in the third. The result was two third and two final quarter goals to McVeigh. The move also involved Luke Hewitt going higher up the ground. He took a number of telling marks when it mattered across half back to help seal the win. Young Ben King was a solid contributor in the ruck for the Blues in the absence of Josh Mulheron, who will be missing for up to eight weeks with a fractured cheekbone. The Blues also went into the match without star forward Luke Clark, who hurt his AC-joint (shoulder) in the clash against Frankston Bombers on ANZAC Day. Shaun Foster is a gem and he was at his finest on Saturday with three goals, while Nick Gray and Pete Mawson won plenty of the footy through the middle of the ground. Paul Rogasch booted four goals playing as a key forward. Devon Meadows is making steady progress in 2016. After being almost eight goals down at half time, the old Devon Meadows would have thrown in the towel.

However, the Panthers booted eight goals in the third term and drew level. They also went toe-to-toe with the Blues in the final quarter. Patrick Harmes is a star of the competition and is incredibly underrated, while Jack Hazendonk and Jayden Sullivan were tireless. Where to for Crib Point? The Magpies recruited extremely well in the pre-season and there was enormous optimism for the year ahead. Four rounds later, the club is on its knees after a humiliating 98 point loss to Sorrento. This time last year, with an inferior list to what ran out on the weekend, the Magpies overran the Sharks in a massive upset. The Magpies play like individuals, and on Saturday, the cracks began to open wider. Arguing on the field and between leaders saw the Pies boot just one goal in the opening half. The Pies managed to boot six last quarter goals to add some respectability. Crib Point coach Taylor Stratton was named in the best players but from all reports was “hardly sighted. Paul Smith was the standout with three goals while James Cook rarely doesn’t give his all. Take no credit away from the Sharks though – their stars were at their best. Nick Corp booted five majors and Scott Lockwood four while Luke Tapscott and Tyrren Head dominated. It would be very interesting to be a fly on the wall at Crib Point over the next couple of weeks. What a match it will be this weekend when the Pies play Tyabb.

Pies struggle to fly after four losses CRIB POINT FNC

NETBALL By Lily Hibbert AFTER what was another disappointing finals campaign in 2015, our netballers are back and stronger than ever! Some exciting new recruits, such as VNL player Karly Wappett and the return of Dionne Douglas from injury paired with a rigorous pre-season from our fitness coach (Adrienne Harris) has put us in an excellent position for success across all grades in 2016. A Grade coach Belinda Nerantzoulis couldn’t be happier with the line up she has. With a young and versatile team on court, finals will again be on the cards. She says ‘our defenders are working hard and our goalers continue to reward them’. After tak-

ing down Red Hill, Pearcedale and Devon Meadows in previous rounds, our top team made easy work of Sorrento at their home court on Saturday. Congratulations to Alicia Coventry for playing her first A Grade game for the club. Although winning their first two games, producing a draw against a strong and accurate Devon Meadows in the previous round meant that B Grade was out to prove themselves this week, beating a Sorrento side that we believe is improving each year. Laura Herrington made a long awaited return to the court and her first goal of the match was met by cheers from an excited Crib Point crowd. Some new faces this year have added strength

under 17’s this year and is doing an excellent job with a fresh squad. She says ‘they are improving every week and I’m excited to see what they will bring for the rest of the season’. The girls are yet to win a game after losing some key players from last season but are training hard and enjoying their netball. Our biggest challenge awaits us this weekend when we play Tyabb. We are looking forward to playing against some tough competition in all grades and we are ready to take them on! The club would also like to congratulate Belinda and her new husband Anthony on their pregnancy. Belinda will be missed on the court this year, but her words of wisdom will no doubt inspire some excellent netball.

and diversity to the team allowing them to produce a new level of netball this season. C Grade this year have an abundance of players and talent for coach Leah Moncrieff to work with, including the return of another famous face, Fiona White, after pregnancy. The girls are still working to ‘gel’ together, however they came from behind against Sorrento on Saturday to win the match by 3 goals. Strong efforts from many of our ‘veteran’ players like Jess Scarlett and Demelza Baxter have helped the team to play competitive netball each week. Amy Cook is currently sidelined with an ankle injury and we all hope she is back on court soon. Jane Piotrowski is coaching our

By Jared Newton THE seniors lost their fourth on the trot in a 98 point belting at the hands of Sorrento, as they also faced their fourth loss on the trot. The upside to the performance was it could’ve been much worse as they were 120 points down into the last quarter and managed to peg a few back late in the game to take some form of momentum into Tyabb for this weeks game. It was a dirty day for the Pies in Brad Davidson’s 150th game in the Black and White as a senior footballer. The winless Pies didn’t have too many winners on the day except for big Jim Cook who clearly won his position in the ruck. Paul Smith continued his good form with another three goals in a day where goals were hard to come by. Confidence is down for the seniors at the minute who need to stick together and do a bit of soul searching as a group to find a way forward and salvage some positives to build throughout the year. The reserves found themselves in a ticklish situation early against Sorrento in a goal for goal affair, before breaking the game open in the second and never looking back for a solid 48 point win. The midfield were given silver service all day and in turn have silver service to the forwards where Mitchell Kleinig led the way with a 5 goals and Duane Annable wound back the clock with some solid marking and a bag of 3. Jacob Cudmore staked his claim to get back in the senior team with a 3 goal effort from the wing. There were no passengers for the reserves all day who defended well, were hard at it and stayed on top all day. It was a great win in a day where the side had four player filling in due to some key outs. The unders were solid but not quite in the same class as Sorrento as they went down by 75 points in the early game. The junior Warlocks- Ethan and Joey Smith continued their strong form with solid games at either end of the ground and Spencer Wilton snagged himself a couple of goals as a ruck/forward. The unders form is hard to gauge and to be fair they’ve come up against two of the best sides in the comp already. Their best footy has them in the 5 but it’s a matter of how often they bring it to their games each week.

Blues grind out terrific victory HASTINGS FNC

showing great team spirit.

ON Saturday the club travelled to Devon Meadows after a five day break after our wonderful win in the Anzac Day game over the Frankston Bombers FNC. The club knew that the trip to Glover Oval was not going to be an easy affair. On a windy and awkward day for football the senior boys had a terrific win to keep their momentum going. We now await another massive challenge with a table topping game against last year’s runners up at Hastings.

Reserves Report WE came into the game against the reigning premier with a lot of confidence after last week’s great win. We also knew it weas going to be a contest. With Devon Meadows kicking with the wind in the first quarter our back six stood very well and limited there scoring to only three goals. When we went with the wind in the second we were very good and established a half time lead. Unfortunately that’s where we stopped. We came out after half time asleep and they took advantage piling on five unanswered goals. We managed to wrestle some momentum back and kick a few goals ourselves in the last but the game was gone. An undisciplined and lack lustre second half overshadowed a good first half. We have to bounce back and fix our deficiencies quickly has we have another big challenge this week. Best afield: Kyle Robb, Matt Sawosz, Terry Green.

Senior Report ANOTHER win for the boys cementing a 4-0 start to the season. The boys played a great first half of football and followed up with a second half that highlighted our set ups and ball use. Devon Meadows kicked six goals in ten minutes after half time and levelled the scores. But two late goals from Colin McVeigh gave us a little buffer, at 3 quarter time. In the last quarter we were able to hold off another momentum swing and then kick away to win by a steady margin. I have been really proud of the boy’s start to the year and they are

Under 19s Report WE travelled out to Devon Meadows expecting a close competitive game

and that’s exactly what we got. The boys started fantastically, restricting the opposition’s space and drive. Shelby Lothian Burdett and Peter Megee were putting on some great tackles to allow us first use out of the middle while Sean Hewitt was proving to be a great target forward. Once again our backline stood up well with new boy Lochlan Lyeness providing run and creating options moving out of defence. In the second our backline, led by Aaron King and Fraser Rendall, continued to push deep into the forward line and started to trouble the opposition who struggled to get the ball out of our forward fifty. Going into half time the boys were full of confidence, but after Devon Meadows kicked a couple of goals on the run our team seemed to lose heart for the contest and spent the rest of the game chasing the opposition. If we are to improve as a team we need to stand strong and fight to the no matter the score. Good signs though from a young team just starting to find their feet in this competition. Best this week: Aaron King, Shelby Lothian Burdett, Fraser Rendall and new boy Lochlan Lyness who thankfully proved to be okay after a knock to the chest.

Next week we meet Somerville; a great chance to keep on learning and building a great competitive team. Netball Report AFTER two weeks of playing at home, it was time to hit the road. Both the sun and wind joined us this Saturday as we faced the girls of Devon Meadows at Glover Reserve. Devon Meadows are well known for their strong zone defence, so we knew it was going to be our toughest clash yet. Our C Grade girls had noticeable improvement this week, specifically with their defensive end throw ins, which was a focus in training this week. Our ball movement out of defence into offence was also much smoother, especially impressive with the added pressure of the Devon Meadows zone. Areas for improvement for this week is our defensive pressure from every player on the court. Throughout the match, Devon Meadows played a good strong game, scoring much too easily against us. Moving onto B Grade girls, we would like to firstly commend the well-rounded game the B Grade Devon Meadows girls played. They had strong movement down the court and excellent court awareness among their side.

Our B Grade Blues girls visibly started flat. We chased our tails for the first half, eventually finding our fight in the second half. Our movement out of defence was more reliable this week, but unfortunately we have more work to do for further movement into our offensive end. We had plenty of opportunities to score goals, but unfortunately we were unable to convert. This was a result of our goal inaccuracy and the strong defensive work by Devon Meadows. Our main focus point for the upcoming week is an overall lift in intensity on the court and playing good strong netball from the first whistle. *** Upcoming Functions: John Coleman Luncheon, 21 May including Hastings Hall of Fame Player/Admin Induction. $65 per person.
