Walking tall at Wallaroo IT was the dawn of a new era at Wallaroo Primary School on Monday as a new batch of prep pupils, including twins Xander and Callum, took the first steps on their learning journey. Previously known as Hastings Westpark, the state primary school has undergone a transformation with a new name, new uniform and new approach to learning. The rebranded and reinvigorated school has introduced an innovative new learning system, the Walker Learning Approach, which principal Mark Watters said had already brought promising results and had been quickly embraced by teachers, parents and pupils. Walker Learning is based on years of research to “personalise teaching and learning, combining the need for children to be active participants in their education through handson, creative exploration and investigation alongside formal instruction. Mr Watters said Wallaroo was looking forward to a “bright and successful future as the only state government school on the peninsula to fully implement the Walker Approach across all grades. Abandon port: coast study By Mike Hast A NEW report calls for Western Port’s coastline to be protected and the proposed Port of Hastings expansion to be abandoned. The recommendation is in The Coast is Unclear: an uncertain future for nature along the Victorian coast released on Sunday by Victorian National Parks Association. It calls for the western shoreline of Port Phillip to be protected from port development, the so-called Bay West

The Port of Hastings should be left as it is and the state government should be “consolidating the ports of Melbourne, Geelong and Portland. Another recommendation that affects the Mornington Peninsula is a call to abandon construction of the proposed Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre on the coastal reserve at Rose-

bud, approved by a narrow majority of shire councillors in December. The report says Victorians are loving the state’s coastline to death, and better planning policies are needed to avoid the “impacts of a new wave of development washing over the state’s 2000-kilometre coastline. The first of its kind on coastal planning and management issues along the state’s entire coastline, the report proposes a 100-metre buffer zone on private land abutting coastal reserves, QUALITY PRODUCTS @ Competitive Prices

lines and seaside towns, but the very landscapes that make summer holidays in the state so special are being transformed by development encouraged and approved by successive state governments,’’ association spokesman Simon Branigan said. The report calls for new and expanded state parks, greater protection for Western Port and Port Phillip, and an overhaul of the ad hoc way authorities manage the coast.

streams, river banks and estuaries. Development would be banned in the buffer zone, boundaries between public and private land would be fenced off, and landowners would get financial help to encourage vegetation restoration. The recommendations are among dozens in the 268-page report, commissioned by VNPA and produced by veteran marine and coastal environment consultant Chris Smyth. “Victorians love their rugged coast-
