GREG Hunt and his wife Paula were surrounded by jubilant supporters soon after early counting showed he had been re-elected as MP for Flinders. Picture: Gary Sissons
Hunt safe, but support drops Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au GREG Hunt has been re-elected to the federal seat of Flinders, although his majority has been pared back to single figures. On the latest available figures Mr Hunt holds his seat with a majority of just over seven per cent. He won the previous election with an 11.8 per cent margin. When counting ended on Saturday night Mr Hunt was in the lead with a comfortable 56.9 per cent of the 78.6
per cent of votes counted. On preferences there was a 4.9 per cent swing to Labor’s Carolyn Gleixner, but Mr Hunt’s lead remains one of which many of his colleagues can only dream about. However, the combined efforts of Ms Gleixner, Willisa Hogarth (The Greens) and Ben Wild (Animal Justice Party) have succeeded in paring back Mr Hunt’s safe lead to single figures. But there is no way Flinders can be regarded a marginal as a result. The seat has been held almost continuously by the Liberal since 1972, with just one small blip, in 1983
when it briefly went to Labor’s Bob Chynoweth who defeated Liberal Peter Reith. On Sunday Mr Hunt said he was honoured to have been re-elected and now saw the government’s “task” as being to “deliver on our commitments and to fight for other inmportant projects in the electorate, such as development of the Rosebud hospital”. Mr Hunt was also “pleased to see Chris Crewther as the [Liberal] member for Dunkley”. Mr Hunt, 50, has held the seat since 2001. As Environment Minister he became
a high profile member of first the Abbott Coalition government and then that led by Malcolm Turnbull. However, his portfolio attracted a lot of attention, especially when it came to port developments likely to detrimentally affect the health of Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef and his approval of the multi-billion dollar Adani coal mine, also in Queensland. In his own electorate, the environment of Western Port took a back seat with the November 2014 election of the Daniel Andrews Labor government in Victoria and its decision not to proceed with an international container
port at Hastings. If the port had gone ahead Mr Hunt would have been called on to approve dredging works in the bay that environmentalists claim would harm internationally recognised wetlands. Over the past few years Mr Hunt’s office was often the focus of demonstrations, mainly criticising the government’s environmental and asylum refugee policies. Luckily, most of the protests did not deal directly with issues or involve voters within the Flinders electorate. A fact reflected in the outcome of Saturday’s poll.

High Sreet shops The great outdoors is on the program urged to ‘go green for Dermot’ SHOPS in High St, Hastings, are being urged to use a green theme in their windows to mark the murder three years ago of Dermot O’Toole. A candle vigil will also be held on 12 July. Mr O’Toole was stabbed during a robbery of his High St jewellery shop by Gavin Perry, who was convicted and sentenced to 27 years’ jail. An appeal by the Director of Public Prosecutions over the leniency of the sentence were dismissed by the Court of Appeal last week. The family wanted his sentence lengthened while Perry was seeking a reduction. Perry, who was on parole for previous armed robberies at the time of the 5 July 2013 attempted robbery of the Jewel Shed, also stabbed Mr O’Toole’s wife, Bridget. Mornington Peninsula Shire last week asked shops to decorate their windows in a green or Irish theme from Sunday 10 July to Sunday 17 July. Members of Mr O'Toole’s family will attend a candle vigil starting at 5pm Tuesday 12 July to quietly remember the events that ended with his death. The vigil will be held at O'Toole Walk, named in his memory, at 52 High St. Attendees are also being

CHILDREN from Red Hill Memorial Pre-School enjoyed a visit from Seaweed Sally. “Seaweed Sally, as well as Roaming Reptiles and a Responsible Pet Program, give the children the opportunity to touch and learn about animals living in their local area,” four-yearold teacher Jodie Denman said. “They teach the children how to be safe around them and how our actions can impact on the survival of these animals in their natural habitats.” A nature-inspired program allows the children to spend time outdoors connecting with nature at the 60-yearold school, she said. “Looking after the chickens, feeding the native birds, such as rosellas and lorikeets, watching kookaburras and magpies, and planting and harvesting fruits and vegetables from the gardens, all occur on a daily basis. “Natural furniture, materials and equipment are used indoors, giving the preschool a lovely warm and welcoming feeling as soon as you walk in the door.” Pre-school groups are named after an indigenous animal: Bunjil (eagle), Babbajin (kookaburra) and Mindi (snake). Children learn and use local language, songs and stories and also participate in sessions with Aboriginal Elder, Murrundindi. Many children from Red Hill, Main Ridge, Arthurs Seat, Shoreham, Point Leo, Merricks, Safety Beach, Dromana and surrounding areas have attended the pre-school’s three and four-year-old programs in the two years before they start school. Images honour a sister’s death Liz Bell liz@mpnews.com.au JAN Dance is determined to turn the tragic death of her sister from motor neurone disease into a story of faith and hope. Her sister Sue Whyte died in 2011, four years after being diagnosed with the illness. Jan says the diagnosis, when Sue was 54, was hard to accept, as her sister was a “beautiful soul” who was adored by many. “I was her younger sister and I can say we never ever had an argument, she was just a beautiful person and was always kind,” she said. Jan and her brother Jeff did all they could to stay positive and stay strong for their eldest sister, but they also wanted to ensure that her legacy was not one of sadness. “Sue was full of life and a very positive, energetic person who ran her own lingerie company up until the day she died,” Jan said. “There is nothing worse than watching someone you love dearly fade away from this disease and I am trying to help raise funds and awareness to finally find a cure and eradicate it.” To honour Sue’s memory and raise money for MND Vic, Jan, a keen photographer since receiving her first camera at seven, is holding an exhibition of her images at the Red Hill Bakery, Balnarring. Her work reflects her love of nature and her keen eye for a good subject. Having spent so much time behind the lens, Jan has learnt to experiment

with images and has entered works in national and international competitions. “There is still a lot of mystery surrounding motor neurone disease and it's really important that we keep supporting research to find a cure,” Jan said. Former Essendon player Neil Daniher's public battle with MND has recently brought the illness into the mainstream consciousness and Jan hopes ongoing fundraising efforts will help find a cure. “By having this exhibition, and possibly more down the track, I hope to raise awareness of the disease,
which has a 100 per cent death rate,” she said. The exhibition “Whyte Vision” will be held at the Red Hill Bakery, Balnarring, throughout July. The proceeds of one image auctioned on Saturday 2 July will go to MND Vic, as will a percentage of all other sales. Anger over O’Toole appeal rejection Cameron McCullough cameron@mpnews.com.au NEARLY three years after the brutal murder of Hastings jeweller, Dermot O’Toole, three justices of the Court of Appeal have dismissed an appeal by the Director of Public Prosecutions against the leniency of the jail sentence handed down to his murderer, Gavin Perry. Also dismissed was Perry’s application for leave to appeal the severity of his 27-year sentence. This leaves the sentences in place after the appeal hearing of 20 July last year, and an 11-month deliberation by the three justices. “We were very disappointed with the outcome”, Trent O’Toole, one of Dermot’s sons said. “The justices acknowledged it was a lenient sentence, but were unable to change it”. The issue that limted the justices had nothing to do with the severity of the crime, but rather the fact that the Department of Public Prosecution had decided to prosecute a “lesser” charge of statutory murder (also known as Murder 3A), as opposed to common law murder, which can carry a more severe sentence. During the initial appeal hearing, the justices asked counsel for the DPP why it had appealed the leniency of the sentence, after downgrading the charge in the initial trial from common law murder to the less serious statutory murder. “Pragmatism. To avoid a trial and to end up with a charge that carried the same maximum penalty,” replied the counsel.
Loving, and much loved: Dermot O’Toole’s murder has devastated his family and friends and left a lasting scar on the community.
The maximum penalty for both statutory and common law murder is life, and it appeared that the DPP had hoped the downgrade would not affect the sentence. It is an unwritten assumption in the legal fraternity that statutory murder is considered a lesser charge than common law murder as intent to kill does not have to be proven. In an apparent attempt to expedite justice for the O’Tooles and avoid the stress and turmoil of a trial on the family, the DPP has deprived them of the justice they deserve. At the appeal, the Director of Public Prosecutions asserted that the sentence imposed on Perry, who stabbed and killed Dermot O’Toole during an
armed robbery of his jewellery shop in Hastings, was manifestly inadequate. Perry had pleaded guilty to statutory murder and was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment on that charge. Perry also pleaded guilty to a charge of intentionally causing injury and to armed robbery. He was sentenced to a total effective sentence of 27 years’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of 23 years’ imprisonment. The Director of Public Prosecutions appealed against the 20 year sentence for the offence of statutory murder, and against the total effective sentence of 27 years’ imprisonment. But the Court of Appeal dismissed the director’s appeal, noting that the
DON’T SUFFER THROUGH ANOTHER COLD WINTER
sentence of 20 years’ jail for statutory murder was three years higher than any sentence previously imposed for that offence: “Although we consider that the sentence imposed on the charge of statutory murder failed to reflect adequately the degree of criminality of Perry’s conduct, the judge sentenced Perry by reference to current sentencing practices for this offence, as she was required to do,” said the Court of Appeal’s judgement. With the findings now handed down, the CoA has stated that sentencing practice for the offence of “statutory murder” needed to change to reflect the fact that it is not inherently less serious than the common law form of murder. “The fact that s 3A relieves the prosecution of the obligation to prove intent does not, however, render the offender’s intent irrelevant or evidence of intent inadmissible. The sentencing court must therefore consider what the material before the court reveals about the offender’s state of mind with respect to the act causing death,” said the CoA’s judgement. In Victoria, the offence of murder can be charged either under the common law or under s 3A. The two offences carry the same maximum penalty of life imprisonment. In contrast to statutory murder, common law murder requires proof of intention to kill or cause really serious injury. Until now, the CoA said, statutory murder has been viewed as less serious than common law murder. “A number of sentencing decisions
in this state have proceeded on the erroneous basis that the offence of statutory murder is a less serious form of murder than common law murder and should therefore attract sentences of a lesser order. The accepted (but erroneous) view has been that, under s 3A, the killing must be treated as unintentional and that, as a result, markedly lower sentences should be imposed than for common law murder,” said the judgement. This is little comfort to the O’Toole’s who have now endured three years of anguish trying to get justice for their father and husband. The only positive outcome is that, through their tenacity, the O’Tooles have affected a change to the law that will see future cases dealt with in a fairer manner. “There are three statutory murder cases with the DPP which were on hold awaiting the outcome of our appeal. It is pleasing to know that those murderers will now be sentenced more harshly,” Trent O’Toole said. “The main reason Perry received a lenient sentence was due to the inadequate handling of the case by the DPP and prosecution team. The DPP accepted Perry’s plea for statutory murder even though they acknowledged they could prove intent.” As for O’Toole family members, their crusade for justice is not at its end. Media appearances in the last few days on Channel Nine, Channel Seven, and 3AW have shown they are determined to continue to campaign for justice for Dermot.

Note of ‘dischord’ outside MP’s office MUSICIAN Steve Romig didn’t quite get the audience he was hoping for when singing a protest song outside the Hastings office of Flinders MP Greg Hunt. A troubadour with a message about his concern for the environment, Romig, of Tootgarook, says the Environment Minister’s staff quickly left and locked the office before he even played a note. Despite the empty office he decided to continue his performance, even though it seemed his only public audience were the occupants of a mysterious black four-wheel drive, parked just across the car park. His manager, Michael Snelson, of Balnarring-based Soul Management, said Mr Hunt’s staff “shut up shop” just after 10am Thursday as he and Romig were waiting for Arts Party Senate candidate, Maureen Andrew.
Steve Romig’s protest was missed by Greg Hunt but picked up by the federal police.
“They literally closed the office and drove away. We know this as other members of the general public were trying to get into the office and couldn't enter, so they all left,” Snelson said. “Steve decided to continue and commenced his peaceful protest by singing his song Come My Children.” It was at this stage that the troubadours spotted the four-wheel drive with darkened windows. “We noticed the occupants watching us and thought it may have been Greg avoiding us,” Snelson said. “Steve decided to walk over to them, continuing his singing. “Once he finished his song the occupants exited the car and introduced themselves as federal undercover police officers. “They were very friendly and we all
had a laugh about Steve having just serenaded them. “They confirmed they were called by Greg's office before the staff had left. They also confirmed the staff left because of us, which was interesting considering Steve hadn't even gone near Greg’s office at that point. “They explained their presence was precautionary only and agreed their presence was probably overkill given the circumstances.” Show over, Romig and his entourage moved to High St and the VEC polling “shop” where, according to Snelson, they found a few other Flinders candidates “were more than happy to talk to Steve and get involved with him. A very different outcome to what we faced at Greg Hunt’s office”. Keith Platt
Bayside site for sale as school moves on Liz Bell liz@mpnews.com.au THE sprawling Mt Eliza campus of the Melbourne Business School is being marketed to overseas buyers, with its private beachfront access and buildings expected to fetch as much as $20 million. The school is selling the 8.9 hectare Kunyung Rd property, partly due to falling interest in regionally-based business courses and a plan expand the school’s Carlton site as a “worldclass centre for business education”. MBS media manager Emily FearGook said the “landscape” for business education had changed since the 1980s when the school moved some of its courses to the peninsula after merging with the Mt Eliza Business School. She said companies were now seeking shorter, inner-city courses, where international clients had easy access to airports. Ms Fear-Gook said the eight Mt Eliza residents who attended a public information session on 24 July were told there were strict covenants on the building and land, which meant it could only be used for education, religion, religion-based aged-care or primary production. However, there have been several alterations to the buildings over the years and it is believed only the Tudor-style, red-brick gatehouse is heritage listed. The site is the part of the former Moondah estate built by James Grice

from a “boutique hotel to a grand private residence”, subject to approvals from relevant authorities. Mr Wizel’s sales assistant Bianca Butterworth said the price “is rather conservative given [the property’s] unique nature”. “The property currently provides supporting services including hotel and conference facilities and current zoning will also allow for alternate use including health and wellbeing and medical facilities, subject to council approval,” Ms Butterworth said. The site is part of the early Moondah estate and lies behind the historic, red brick, Tudor-style gatehouse. Moondah is one of the few remind-
ers of a time when wealthy gentleman sought large tracts of rolling, beachside countryside on which to build their sprawling estates. The 42-room Victorian mansion was set in magnificent gardens, with a vineyard, golf course, tennis court, croquet green and polo field. Later bought by businessman and aviation mogul Sir Reginald Ansett, Moondah was converted to a luxury hotel in 1947. Ten years later it was sold to the Australian Administrative Staff College, which was founded by the peninsula’s business community with the aim of providing high-quality business and management courses. The staff college later became the
Mt Eliza Business School, which merged with the Melbourne Business School in the 1980s. Retired Tyabb businessman Peter McCullough once lived next to the property and remembers attending a four-week “intermediate” management course when it was the Australian Administrative Staff College in 1969. Mr McCullough, who worked with the Country Roads Board, said the college was highly regarded within the business community. “There were about 60 other business people at this particular course, and the college ran a range of management courses that were always very popular.”

Market helps the community Cafe loses out when forced open MCCRAE cafe proprietor Sam Keck, pictured, got the wake-up call he dreaded, 3am, Friday morning. It was the milkman telling him his Merchant and Maker cafe, in Point Nepean Rd, had been broken into. Racing down he found the front door had been jemmied open for the thief to gain entry and steal a “substantial amount” of money from the till and more from the jemmied safe. Also gone was the cafe’s tips jar containing money earmarked for Ugandan charity the Cup
that Counts, which contributes to the African country’s community development. The cafe also donates 20 cents from each cup to the charitable cause. Mr Keck lost a laptop and a notebook computer containing daily menus, throwing the day’s food preparation into disarray. “You’ve got to make the best of a bad situation,” he said, as he prepared to open for a busy Friday. “We’ll be changing locks and passwords and trying to get things in order.”
Ice driver gets 11 years THE ice-affected driver who killed two elderly women in a mini-bus crash in Rosebud, in August, has been jailed for 11 years with a minimum of seven and a half years. Michael Patrick Trueman, of Coburg, pleaded guilty in the Victorian County Court last week to two counts of culpable driving causing death. Judge Paul Lacava was told the 24-year-old L-plate driver had the highest levels of speed and ice in his system that Victorian experts have ever seen. His Commodore crashed head-on into the Ti Tree Lodge mini bus, killing Betty May Fox, 91, and Katharina Nensteil, 88, and seriously injuring another passenger. Seven residents aged 71-94 were in the bus in Eastbourne Rd on an outing to the beach.

Detective Senior Constable Peter Butland, of Somerville CIU, said the boys were walking along Frankston-Flinders Rd when a car stopped and an 18-year-old man demanded one of their hoodies, wallet and phone. The victim’s credit card was later used to buy items. Two days later police saw the car – a stolen Nissan Pulsar – in Carrum Downs and gave chase but abandoned it after a short distance. A warrant was executed on the man’s house in Main St, Friday, where police allege they recovered some of the boy’s property. The man was charged with armed robbery, theft of a motor car and other offences. He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, Wednesday 6 July.

A LEADING state government environmental monitoring agency is playing down about erosion on Mornington Peninsula beaches. Alarm is mounting over the loss of sand at several beaches, including McCrae, with claims that sand loss is due to weather and the deepening of Port Phillip shipping channels. Paul Millsom, of McCrae, has accused authorities of ignoring the threat and not doing enough to protect the coastline (“Bay beachers faces diminishing returns”, The News 28/6/16). Port Phillip Baykeeper Neil Blake echoed Mr Millsom's fears, drawing on data that suggests the increases in tide heights are substantially greater than predicted by consultants' reports prepared for the Port of Melbourne Corporation before the 2008-2009 channel dredging. Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning spokesman Nick Talbot said last week the department was “not aware of significant erosion along the Mornington Peninsula from storm events this year”. Mr Blake has recorded and mapped Point Nepean beach profiles and water levels, citing significant erosion exacerbated by channel deepening over the past five years. He has just started a study of McCrae beach. He said the “prevailing” view that beach sand lost along the peninsula will eventually return had resulted in the real threat being ignored. “We know that sea levels are rising, so councils and governments need to be acting now,” he said. Mr Talbot said sand movements at McCrae
Beach were not related to channel deepening and were a “natural occurrence”. “Sand movements at McCrae beach are driven by wind-generated waves from within Port Phillip, rather than ocean swell and as such these movements are expected to increase during storm events,” he said. “The coastline is a dynamic environment with sand movements along Port Phillip Bay being a natural occurrence that DELWP continues to monitor.”

Mayor’s benefit ball
Wrong message: The signs at Somers beach relate to dangers inland, not on the beach.
Beach no-go signs get the old heave-ho CONTRACTORS were yesterday (Monday) removing incorrect no-trespassing signs on Somers beach. The signs had caused concern among regular beach users, but it seems they were meant to warn of danger further inland not on the beach. The signs, put up by HMAS Cerberus on 30 June, are 1.7 kilometres north-west of the 100 steps, below the high water line and above the low water line in the tidal zone.
The warnings could have affected elderly activity groups, bird watchers, joggers and dog walkers who regularly use the foreshore. Beachgoer Barry Hodder, of Bittern, said he had been exercising at Somers beach for many years, and enjoyed walking from the car park up to Stony Point and back, about 12km. He said he felt both angst and bitterness at what he perceived as a closure by the navy of his usual walking area.
He said several regular beach users had asked whether the closure was legal and whether there was a dedicated no-go zone on this stretch of beach, particularly in the tidal zone. Also, when was the area declared a no-go area? But, yesterday, Cerberus commanding officer Captain Stephen Bowater said the no-trespassing part of the signs had been incorrectly included on the signs, although the warnings of live firing were correct.
“People are still free to walk along the beach, which is well outside live firing areas,” he said. “The message is not to go above the high-water mark.” Captain Bowater said the immediate inland area had been a small arms firing range over the years, with many unexploded shells embedded in the ground. “It’s OK to walk along the sand, but not inland,” he said.
THREE charities have been chosen to benefit from this year’s Mornington Peninsula Shire’s mayoral ball. The mayor Cr Graham Pittock has chosen to direct profits from the ball to Dromana Second Bite, The Van and Friends of Los Palos. Cr Pittock said the three organisations “do amazing work within our local community and abroad”. “These worthy organisations are run by volunteers to ease the pain and consequences of poverty.” The the black and white-themed ball will be held in the hall at the National Golf Club, Cape Schanck, with pre-dinner drinks and canapes followed by a three course meal and drinks, produced by executive chef Craig Gorton. Sarah Busuttill and the Phil Ceberano Band will entertain. The mayoral charity ball is on Friday 26 August at the National Golf Club, The Cups Drive, Cape Schanck. Tickets are $185 each at www.trybooking.com/MASA or call 5950 1428 by 12 August.

Keep donations clean for the op shops In what kind of society do we live in where it is acceptable to dump bags of rubbish and broken furniture at op shops overnight so that elderly ladies have to rummage through filth and dispose of heavy items just because people are too lazy to go to the tip? I recently began volunteering at a Rosebud op shop, working with some lovely older ladies. These ladies have been volunteering for years and most are retired. Most of them are somebody’s mother and grandmother. I am in my 20s and would be mortified if my mother had to go through the “donation” bags. On my first day I reached into one of these bags to grab a pair of soiled men’s underwear. Yes, that’s right. The ladies tell me this is quite common: people don’t wash the items beforehand and some are usually and cannot be re-sold. One volunteer told me she reached into a donated handbag and pulled out blood stained underwear. Why am I telling readers this? Because I am wanting to raise awareness of this problem within our community. I urge the public to come into the store with their donated goods. Please do not leave rubbish outside op shops, some of these ladies have back ailments which prevent them from lifting heavy piles. If you witness people dumping rubbish outside business hours, please contact the police as it is an offense to dispose of rubbish in a public space. We can all help improve our community op shops by keeping then clean and safe for staff and public. Suni Shaw, Rosebud
Code of conduct I was concerned that four of our 10 Mornington Peninsula Shire councillors would vote against adopting a revised councillor code of conduct. To understand why this would be the case, I listened to the audio recording of the special meeting of 6 June. Regretfully, most the of debate was inaudible, as the majority of councillor’s comments were not captured on the tape. The key issue that I could glean from the limited audibility of the debate, which may well have been the reason why four councillors voted against adopting the code of conduct, was the proposed widening of the definition/interpretation of “confidential Information”. Under the revised code, councillors can effectively use their discretion as to what constitutes confidential information, rather than rely upon the Local Government Act definition. One real outcome of six councillors voting in favour of the code of conduct could well have been that we ratepayers would never have known anything about the recent embarrassing case of a councillor exceeding their expenditure entitlements. Councillors could easily have determined that matter to be confidential information, preventing the details from being made public. Is that the level of local democracy that we are after?
The Minister for Local Government is seeking more openness and transparency in the dealings of local government. However, it appears that a majority of Mornington Peninsula Shire councillors would prefer to have less material in the public domain. The recent media commentary concerning the City of Casey’s lack of openness and transparency should be well understood by our elected councillors. If this fundamental principle is difficult for some councillors to understand or appreciate, then we should strongly express our views on this subject with them in the appropriate way, should they re-stand for council at the October election. Stuart Allen, Dromana
Two rate state I see that the Mornington Peninsula Shire has replaced the $180 municipal charge with a $193 waste services charge on top of our general rates bill which is capped at a 2.5 per cent rise (“Rates capped to state’s order”, The News 28/6/16). This is effectively two rates: one capped, one not. The old municipal charge started out at $50. This new surcharge makes a mockery of the state government’s 2.5 per cent rates cap because the rates cap includes any “municipal charge”, but a service charge such as a “waste charge” is exempt. So, change the name of the surcharge and the effective rate burden can be whatever the shire wants. Nothing changes. Waste services are, of course, included in and paid for by the general rate. Even if our shire does not need the extra money, and it doesn’t, it will apply this surcharge simply because it can. I thought that the Victorian government was doing the right thing by reigning in excessive spending by councils, but it was all just a political stunt. Even if we vote in all new councillors in the November elections it will probably be to no avail. The state elections are still over the horizon but we need a leader who will do what Kennett did in 1994: sack the lot of them. Brian A Mitchelson, Mornington
Ward campaigners I have received a publication titled Nepean Ward News published and posted to residents by the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council. This is the second such document distributed by the shire in relation to the Nepean Ward. I see this publication as a waste of ratepayers’ funds. It appears to be an electoral campaign brochure for the councillors. It is interesting that during their four-year term, we only received these documents in the past year, just before the [October municipal] elections. I also understand that such a brochure was only produced for this ward’s councillors.
happen federally with a Bill Shorten-led Labor government. Daniel Andrews and Bill Shorten share the same common, overriding Labor mantra - “whatever it takes”. They will do and say anything, the facts notwithstanding, to achieve their socialist goals. Neville Congress, Rosebud
Majority support
Why does the council deem it necessary to produce this publication when it already produces at great cost a newsletter for the whole municipality? From what I have been told the campaign brochure has cost the ratepayers of the council many thousands of dollars. The contents of the brochure relate mainly to proposed projects as opposed to achievements, which is further indication that it is campaigning material. Bryan Payne, Sorrento Editor: The shire’s communications and media manager Mark Kestigian said four editions of PeninsulaWide were being published a year (instead of the previous six) and each ward had been offered one newsletter a year. With graphic design being done in-house print costs were about .15 cents for each newsletter, with slight variations due to the varying population of each ward. The Nepean Ward News had cost $1900 to print and distribute to the ward’s 8000 residents.
CFA hoodwinked I wonder if the CFA volunteers now feel hoodwinked into giving Malcolm Turnbull their imprimatur to dabble in the workplace laws? I feel sure that the full time and casual workers of Australia will be over the moon to know that a volunteer work force could create uncertainty for millions because they feel hard done by. Julie Bishop, when she insinuated herself into one of the CFA rallies, made a passing reference to workplace laws, now Turnbull has come right out and said he will change laws to “give certainty to the volunteers”. What’s the bet he won’t stop there? As far as costing Labor votes is concerned, I don’t think there are many Labor supporters within the volunteer ranks. Rest assured that if Turnbull gets re-elected the CFA volunteer issue will be forgotten along with other promises. He’ll be too busy dismantling Medicare and cutting funding to health, education, pensions and the environment. How can you trust a multi millionaire? John Cain, McCrae
The article (“Cracks continue in Somers footpath fight”, The News 28/6/16) by Liz Bell states that the Somers Residents Association (SRA) is at loggerheads with the Somers Village Community Association (SVCA). This is not true. The SRA has no dispute with the SVCA. That group has exercised its democratic right to challenge Mornington Peninsula Shire’s decision to levy a charge to fund the pathway. The dispute is between the shire and the SVCA. The story further states that the SRA is in favour of the pathway proposal. That is not true. The SRA is neither in favour nor against the proposal. The SRA simply canvassed via two surveys all Somers residents to gauge their views on a pathway. The results showed a large majority in favour and this information was passed to the shire which now has carriage of the pathway proposal. This is exactly what SRA president Dennis Aylward said when contacted by Ms Bell and as your story states. Tim Rintoul, vice-president, Somers Residents Association
Keep gallery Ann Thornton (“Smarter to keep gallery and broaden its use” Letters 28/6/16) makes very valid points about the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, Mornington, about increasing the facilities and attendance numbers rather than moving it to another location. In my opinion, based on its current position and proximity to other visitor attractions, ease of parking, room for expansion, light and airy building with good acoustics and infrastructure, it ticks all the boxes. Surely the large amount of money being spent on architects’ feasibility studies into finding a new site for the gallery would be better spent on improving the facilities at the existing one and its immediate surrounds and by innovative marketing to encourage more visitors and greater use of it. Ms Thornton has outlined many practical ways in which this could be achieved, to which I would add that art teachers at local schools could conduct class visits to MPRG, Probus clubs might organise group outings and greater use be made of Facebook as a promotional tool. I am all in favour of MPRG continuing to be a fine attraction on the peninsula but can see no obvious reasons for moving it to another location. Tim Acton, Mt Eliza
Union power Over past weeks we have all witnessed the power that the unions can exercise over a state government. The United Firefighters’ Union has “called in their marker” from Daniel Andrews and he buckled to their obscene demands. Imagine the Victorian scenario multiplied 10 fold and you have a picture of what could

Nets offer no protection for wildlife Liz Bell liz@mpnews.com.au GARDENERS using nets to protect fruit trees are unwittingly causing the painful and illegal deaths of wildlife every year, says a Mornington Peninsula wildlife carer. Michelle Thomas, from Animalia Wildlife Shelter in Frankston, says sugar gliders, possums, flying foxes and birds are often cruelly trapped in nylon netting and cannot chew or fight their way out. Instead they face an agonising and slow death as they struggle, often breaking limbs and suffering stress and exposure in the sun. Ms Thomas, a registered wildlife carer, cares for up to 3000 animals annually, from as far as Brighton to Portsea. She wants people to consider more eco-friendly ways of protecting fruit trees, such as using commercially available wildlife-friendly netting, or creating buffer zones between the tree and animals, with a simple frame that can be dismantled after fruiting. “If the netting is draped straight over the tree, anything landing on it will get caught,” she said. “If you create a buffer zone by a frame you can protect your fruit and protect the wildlife.” Ms Thomas said sugar gliders, kookaburras and even blue-tongue lizards are often attracted to the insects on the blossoms, not the fruit, but are still caught in the netting. “Many people forget the relationship between animals and nature, and some animals are actually pollinators,” she said.
Bat trap: Protective nets can be a death trap for bats and birds and wildlife authorities recommend building a netted frame as a protective buffer for fruit trees.
Under the Wildlife Act, it is illegal to harm or kill wildlife. The Department of Environment and Primary Industries' Animal Welfare Advisory Committee recommends alternatives to drape netting of trees, such as using shade cloth, which is effective but kinder to wildlife. A department fact sheet states that up to one third of animals entangled

either die from strangulation, blood loss, shock, or dehydration, or require euthanasia due to injuries sustained while entangled. “Members of the community have a responsibility to ensure that their behaviour reduces the likelihood of harm and injury to animals, and netting installed over domestic ‘backyard’ fruit trees should be installed in
a way that is ‘wildlife-safe’,” it states. It is illegal to harm wildlife under Victoria law. Amy Hidge, from animal rescue and support network,Wildlife Victoria, said there had been a 200 per cent increase in reports to their emergency response service over the past 12 months. She said loose netting was effec-
tively a death trap to wildlife, but that there were many wildlife friendly alternatives available at nurseries and hardware stores, such as Hail Guard, Veg Net, Fruit Save Net or plain Shade Cloth. Ms Hidge said fruit bats were particularly important for pollination, with a single flying fox being able to disperse 60,000 seeds in a night.

Geo-bands tracking summer visitors THEY might be small and light, but red-necked stints are no slouches when it comes to overseas travel, flying each year between Western Port and as far north as Siberia. The stints spend the summer months in Australia before leaving to breed in the northern hemisphere. This year Parks Victoria rangers and volunteers banded more than 250 rednecked stints at Yallock Creek with the Victorian Wader Study Group as a part of a long term program to track the birds. Banding involves attaching a unique number metal band and a lightweight geo-locator to the leg of a bird which helps researches track their journey once they are retrieved. “The Victorian Wader Study Group has been studying waders for over 20 years and their research is increasing our understanding of the birds and their needs linking Victoria to the rest of the flyway,” Parks Victoria ranger Thierry Rolland said. “The banding program seeks to locate the habitats of migratory birds and is a part of a wider conservation effort to protect their habitats which is of significance to Parks Victoria and other agencies around the world.” Mr Rolland said Western Port is recognised as a wetland of international significance under the international Ramsar Convention. There are agreements between Australia and other countries to protect migratory birds including the Japan-Australia, and China- Australia Migratory Bird Agreement. He said many parks in Western Port

like Yaringa Marine National Park have protected areas for birds to provide a safe space free of predators and people who may disturb them. In Western Port red-necked stints feed on small invertebrates found in mudflats. “Their conservation status is currently secured, making them luckier than most other migratory birds such as the orange bellied parrot which is cur-
rently endangered,” Mr Rolland said. “It is important to conserve the habitat of these birds. During their time in Australia they spend their time finding all the food they need in the mudflats and seagrass beds in our parks. We understand that water quality, pollution, and introduced plant and animal species can deteriorate a healthy ecosystem. “Improving water quality in the
creeks that flow into Yaringa Marine National Park is a critical part of our conservation efforts. The Watson’s Creek project is working with landowners and industries along the catchment to minimise their impact on the creek and water quality. This in turn will decrease sediment loads and turbidity, providing favourable conditions for seagrass, a critical habitat in which the birds find their food.
“Birds are a vital part of our ecosystem and their conservation is important to ensure we have healthy parks and healthy people, we need to have healthy, sustainable ecosystems.” For details on Yaringa Marine National Park or how to get involved with the Victoria Wader Study Group call Parks Victoria on 13 1963 or visit www.parks.vic.gov.au orwww.vwsg. org.au

OUR feet are vital for mobility and balance, they are the basis of most of our physical activities, so it’s no wonder problems and pain are common. Heel, arch, ankle and knee pain are most common in both children and adults and can become life affecting or debilitating if left untreated. But there is often a simple solution, if you get a correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Experienced Musculoskeletal Podiatrist Dr. David Kavanagh, from Foot & Leg Pain Clinics says, “People often endure foot and leg pain and concerns for far too long, often because they are misdiagnosed and so receive inappropriate treatment for their condition or because they simply don’t know who to go to for effective treatment. This is really concerning and unnecessary because most foot and leg conditions can be easily overcome, thanks to the latest medical research and treatments.” Whilst there are many doctors and health professionals available right across Victoria, one of the issues we all face is knowing who to go to for specific problems, and this certainly seems to be a dilemma with many who suffer foot and leg pain, injuries or degenerative conditions like arthritis. “At Foot & Leg Pain Clinics we see many people who’ve previously been to see doctors or other health practitioners without having found a long-term solution. Western and Eastern medicine – which is better? Dr Floyd Gomes of Atticus Health says it’s important to discuss the benefits of western and eastern medicine. “I’m often struck by patients who approach me rather coyly “admitting that they’re seeing a “natural medicine therapist, said Dr Gomes. “It’s sad that there is exists such a divide between different practitioners, such that the unfortunate patient finds themselves somewhere in the middle - wondering which “camp is best. I think it’s important to remember that Western Medicine (conventional medicine) is a tried and trusted approach to helping you achieve optimal health, and that other forms, what would be considered to be “complementary, may also may have a role. I must say though, like anything in life, if someone tells you - “I have all the answers and can definitely fix you - likely they’re lying. I’ve seen so many patients and truthfully - it’s hard to be “sure about too many things. You have a percentage confidence about
your thoughts - that may be high, or low - depending on how straightforward the situation is. However, truly - it’s the less likely case that you’re “sure you’re right. An acceptance of this may seem like a failure, or shortcoming - but it’s not - its reality. Dr Gomes says a good way for patients to help themselves with health issues is to go back to diet and exercise and controlling your vices. “This is how we live. And how we live - largely makes our life what it is. Much of your outcome remains in the mirror, in your hands. Don’t get me wrong, there are genuine medical issues that “just happen, outside our control which have nothing or very little to do with our lifestyles, but in the modern era where “chronic disease predominates, getting our lifestyles right, often is very helpful and indeed our best medicine.

OBITUARY
David Herbert Freemantle – Husband, father, grandfather and horticulturist David Herbert Freemantle, 25th February 1931 – 29th May 2016 By Rosemary Macdonald DAVID Freemantle, who was a resident of Hastings for 24 years, has passed away at Craigcare Nursing Home, Mt Martha at the age of 85. David, with his wife Norma had a great sense of community pride and a love of nature, both of which he was keen to share with others. He was a great fan of Hastings as a comfortable and attractive place to live and believed it had a great future. In his quiet way, he contributed greatly to the natural environment of Hastings and to the strength of the local community. David and Norma moved to Hastings in the mid 1980’s, living in Victoria Street then at McCallum Street. David worked for Parks and Gardens at the Shire of Hastings (and then Mornington Peninsula Shire) for 11 years until his retirement in 1995. He instilled in his daughter Rosemary a love of trees and all things horticultural, and took great pleasure in taking his grand-daughter Jean to feed the pelicans whenever they
visited from the UK. Born in Melbourne, David developed a love of the countryside and a desire to work with nature after spending a year on a cattle station in western NSW as a boy during the war. He went on to study Agriculture and Farm Management in Lincoln, New Zealand and gained extensive experience on properties across Victoria and in New Zealand. David worked largely in agriculture and horticulture, managing farm properties and later managing a plant nursery. During his time with the Shire David was in charge of the Hastings Foreshore Reserve, planting and tending the trees which make the foreshore such an outstanding asset to Hastings today. Neighbours remember him filling up buckets on weekends and even after he had retired, driving down to water the eucalyptus saplings during dry periods. David was a familiar sight around Hastings, staking needy trees, picking up any litter in his path and using his trusty square-mouthed shovel to clear away debris from drains and pathways. David took a proud and enthusiastic
part in establishing the wetland boardwalks and walking paths at either end of the town. As a volunteer, he helped to develop Jack Babington Park with the local Lions’ Club, and Warringine Park as a Friend of Warringine. David was always keen to plant more trees – on one particular National Tree Day, after planting 1,000 supplied trees at Warringine with other volunteers, David declared that it was a lost opportunity to plant more than 10,000 trees across the area. “All we had were 1,000 trees and they were in the ground inside two hours he was quoted in one local paper at the time. David believed in participating in his local community and he lived by example – he was a dedicated Lions’ Club member for over 40 years and an active member of the Western Port Lions Club, involved in the running of the Hastings Street Market, driving children to camp at the Lions’ village at Licola, and running the local school quiz nights for many years. On his retirement, David continued to work as a volunteer, driving for the Hastings
Cancer Support Group among other activities. David and Norma played an active part in many local community groups including the Hastings Bowling Club and Probus. They attended Hastings Uniting Church and needless to say, David planted and tended many of the trees flourishing in the church grounds. Those that attended his funeral were
able to enjoy a view of ‘David’s trees’ through the church windows. Good communities and beautiful environments are made by people like David who go about making a better world in a quiet, unheralded way. His legacy lives on in the memories of those who knew and loved him but also in the community and the trees which he so devotedly tended.

100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...
Footy match raises patriotic funds Compiled by Melissa Walsh A FOOTBALL match was played at Frankston on Saturday last, between the locals and a team from Naval Base, a collection being taken up in aid of patriotic funds. The day was cold and showery, which mitigated against a large attendance. The game was pretty evenly contested, and resulted in a win for the visitors by 3.9 to 2.9. *** THE Presbyterian services throughout this district will be conducted on Sunday next by the Rev. G. Carson, of Mornington, the local Moderator. The sacrament of the Holy Communion will be dispensed at each service. The services are advertised. *** THE annual meeting of the Frankston Red Cross Society will be held in the Mechanics’ Hall on Tuesday evening, 11th July, at 8 o’clock, when a full attendance of members is requested, as there is a large amount of important business to transact including election of officers for ensuing year. *** MR Jack Stewart, the popular engineer and machinist, of the Flinders Naval Base, was married to Mrs M. Bygate, of St Kilda, last week. A very enthusiastic welcome was tendered the happy couple on the evening of their arrival at the Base, and the wedding presents were both numerous and costly. *** THE plain and fancy dress ball to
held on Wednesday next, promises to be a great success. Fancy costumes are in course of construction and a rare treat is in store for all who attend. Those who do not wish to dance will be provided with platform tickets for the sum of 1s. Di Gilio’s band will supply the music and there will be a first class supper. *** THE annual effort in connection with the Frankston Christian Endeavour Society to raise funds for the support of missionary students in New Guinea, will be held in the Methodist Schoolroom, on Saturday, 15th July. The Sale of Gifts will be opened by the Rev E Tonkin, at 2p.m. There will be no charge for admission for the afternoon, but in the evening the admission will be a silver coin. *** THE splendid donation of £2 2s was presented to the “Wattles” Club by Miss Lily Gamble, being the proceeds of a raffle, a handsome tray cloth, which was also worked by Miss Gamble. The raffle was drawn by Mrs M’Cormack and Mr Wood, and was won by No426, Miss A. Lemon,Ball and Welch, Flinders street. The club committee decided to make Miss Gamble an honorary member for the ensuing twelve months. *** ELABORATE arrangements are being made by the “Wattles” Club to entertain a party of wounded and sick soldiers at the Hall today (Saturday.) Mr W. M. Pearson, hon. secretary and
treasurer of the Red Cross Volunteer Motor Corps, advises the club that he has chosen Frankston for their hundredth trip and that Lady Stanley will be among the party. Close on 200 soldiers are taking part in the outing, and the residents of Frankston will have the pleasure of doing honor to our heroes. *** THE “Australian” Club held their initial dance on Saturday evening in the Frankston Mechanics’ Hall, the proceeds being in aid the district Roll of Honor. A good programme of 15 dances was gone through in good style, the floor being in first class order, and with a good string band things were kept going merrily. Coffee and light refreshments were handed round, which were much appreciated. Miss M’Comb, as hon. sec., worked hard to make the function a success. A balance sheet will be published when all the ticket money is in. *** OWING to the dissatisfaction that exists at the navy base, Crib Point, on the question of allowances, the Building Trades Federation recently submitted the matter to Mr Justice Higgins, and asked him to call a conference with a view to varying the agreement and assimilating the varying scales of allowance fixed by different tribunals. His Honor has consented to the request on the condition that work shall be continued, and that the men agree to abide by his decision. The officials
of the federation, on behalf of the employers have given the necessary assurances. *** MRS James Westley and Mr H.D. Westley as executors of Charles Wright’s estate have forwarded to the undermentioned charities, as beneficiaries under the will of deceased the following amounts: Half-yearly installments— Melbourne Hospital, £55 2s; Alfred Hospital, £34 18s 10d ; Homeopathic Hospital, £19; Poor Boxes Melbourne City Court, South Melbourne Court, Collingwood Court, Fitzroy Court, £4 each; Poor of Mornington, £40. Quarterly Installments :—Melbourne Benevolent Asylum, Children’s Hospital, Austin Hospital, Deaf and Dumb Asylum, Blind Asylum, £30 each. *** PARISHIONERS of St Anselm’s Anglican Church, Middle Park, met on Tuesday 27th ult to make presentations to the Rev A. P. Mc’Farlane, the outgoing vicar, and Mrs Mc’Farlane, and to welcome the Rev. E. J. Withycombe, B.A. the new vicar, and Mrs Withycombe. Mr Mc’Farlane (who is now filling the Rev G. A. Kitchen’s pulpit at Frankston) was presented with a blackwood roll top desk and chair by the parishioners and Mr T. Case Brown, the senior church warden, spoke enthusiastically of his genial qualities. Mrs Mc’Farlane received a gold wristlet watch from the Ladies’ Guild
and Mothers Union, a gold brooch from the choir and a gift from the Girl’s Friendly Society, the presentations being made by Mr J. G. Johnson and Mr H. E. Guy. *** THE Committee of Management of the Smoke Evening recently tendered to Mr J. D. Calhoun, of Melbourne, at the Australian Hotel Melbourne on Friday evening last, when Mr J. B. Jolly of Frankston, who had acted as secretary and treasurer to the function, submitted his balance sheet, which showed a substantial credit balance. Mr McLellan, the President, elaborated on the excellent organising ability of the secretary Mr Jolly, who had worked untiring and well and had in nine days with subscriptions limited to £1 1s each collected close on £100 from the old and close friends of Mr Calhoun, as well as organised a programme and evening of the best. *** A MEETING of telephone subscribers was held at the Frankston Mechanics Institute on Tuesday evening to take into consideration a circular received from the Deputy-postmaster General intimating that unless the subscribers contribute £32 14s 5d, the amount of deficency on the £250 required the existing facilities of a continuous service would be discontinued after the 31st July, *** From the pages of the Mornington Standard, 8 July, 1916

THE MEANING OF EXISTENCE... AND OTHER SHORT STORIES
Notes from the bunker: Understanding Brexit By Stuart McCullough DON’T panic. I did, for a moment, but I think I’ve calmed down now. It’s more the unholy surprise of the result that saw me spring into action, strapping a metal colander on top of my head as an improvised helmet and digging a large hole in the backyard into which I intended to crawl in the hope of avoiding the inevitable fiscal fallout. The Brexit is coming. Much like the Avian Flu and the most recent season of ‘Glee’, there is nothing we can do to avoid it. We can only try to protect ourselves as best as circumstances will allow. Let me say now that digging a really big hole is, in fact, a lot harder than it appears on television. After forty minutes of effort, I looked like a wrung out sponge and the back yard had a slight dent. My plans to live a harmonious existence beneath the earth’s surface emerging only at night for supplies were, by this time, in total disarray. Loosening the chinstrap and letting the colander fall to the ground I sat and stared at the sky, wondering precisely where it all went so horribly wrong. It’s hard to believe. Only last week, the soon-to-be ex-Prime Minister David Cameron deployed the slogan ‘Brits Don’t Quit’ to devastating effect. Frankly, there’s no comeback for a line like that; deriving, as it does, from that most compelling of political campaigners, MC Hammer. Whilst the connection was not made explicitly, I suspect that subconsciously, millions of people found themselves mumbling ‘2 legit to quit’ under their breath for reasons they didn’t quite understand at the time. Maybe the Prime Minis-
Picture: Yanni
ter didn’t make the connection clear enough. Had he used the slogan whilst wearing parachute pants and performing dance moves, the result might have gone the other way. Perhaps. So Britain is leaving the European Union. For reasons known only to themselves, millions of people have elected to strap a gigantic outboard engine to the bottom of the island (probably somewhere in Cornwall, I’d suggest Lizard Point) to push the whole thing further out to sea. Who knows where they’ll end up? Given that Britain will no longer be part of Europe, I understand that international law dictates that the AFL’s ‘free agency’ rules apply. Whether Britain should be considered a totally free or restricted free
agent isn’t entirely clear from the voting result. Whatever the case, chances are they are free to join the geopolitical alliance of their choice. My money’s on South East Asia. By moving just a few thousand miles south, the British climate will improve dramatically and locals will be able to undertake duty free shopping at all times. This might have been a major motivation for the ‘leave’ vote. Not that it’d be easy. For some time, tensions have been escalating in the South China Sea as countries lay claim to the region by building little islands. They’ be quite put out if they woke up one morning and found Britain had decided to park itself there, like a gigantic backpacker campervan out the front of
your house. As Britain drags itself away from Europe, heading for sunnier climes, the entire country will be a gigantic Fairstar the Funship, pulling into port and allowing its passengers to run amok before rounding them up and heading to the next destination. It will be, frankly, the largest Contiki cruise the world has ever seen. But it’s all well and good that they’ve decided to so forcefully renounce geography, but what are the likely impacts of the seemingly drastic decision? Firstly, Britain will no longer be allowed to compete at Eurovision. Granted, some might say that they’ve not been competing at Eurovision for many years now and their non-
attendance might be something of a mercy killing, but still. There are up to dozens of people who’ve spent their lives dreaming of Eurovision glory whose hopes have just been crushed. Also, ever wondered how James Bond would simply pop up in Spain or Italy or Russia? From now on, a good fortyfive minutes of every Bond film will be spent with 007 as he waits to get through customs. It’s easy to stick the boots into something like the European Union. But those who wish to slag it off do so by ignoring it’s major achievements. Namely, Euro Disney. No longer will the British be able to savour the unholy collision of Hollywood and mainland continental Europe. Je m’appelle Mickey Mouse? Not any more, it isn’t. Then there’s the issue of the Chunnel, which will have to be corked up as a matter of urgency. Doubtless, Boris Johnston is making an emergency trip to Bunnings as I write this, looking for the biggest plug he possible can. Also, Britain will be forbidden from listening to music by the band ‘Europe’. Until you’re no longer permitted to listen to ‘The Final Countdown’ any time the mood strikes, you’ve no idea how big a whole in your life it leaves. So what happen next? Granted, the world will keep spinning on its axis, even if financial markets call in sick next week with a colossal dose of ‘Euro-flu’. It’s a funny age we live in. One where complex ideas are reduced to slogans, regardless of consequence. Perhaps I should keep digging that hole after all. stuart@stuartmccullough.com Western Port News 5 July 2016

ALEX LLOYD’S GRAND PLANS
With more than 30 album releases so far, Liberation Blue makes a welcome return of the label’s ‘Acoustic’ series with our first long player for 2016: ‘Acoustica’, 12 stunning, re-worked classic tunes spanning the career of ARIA winner and multi-platinum singer/ songwriter Alex Lloyd. “It was certainly something I’d thought of doing before,” Lloyd says of the Acoustica recording, the singer’s seventh full-length release. With four
ARIAs already under his belt, Lloyd was intrigued with the concept of revisiting his older material. Expect to hear radio hits ‘Amazing’, ‘Coming Home’, ‘Beautiful’, ‘Black The Sun’ and more, his extensive catalogue getting a brand new lease of life. “This project came along at a perfect time for me,” says Lloyd. “Doing these recordings really helped create a spark in me – it’s been great to re-address these songs, and I’m really happy how
it’s turned out.” In celebration of this special and unique release, Alex has put together an intimate version of his band and will be heading out across Australia on a National Tour in September and October, where everyone will be able to hear these wonderful new interpretations themselves. Alex Lloyd is playing at Grand Mornington on Friday, September 30. Book online at www.grand.net.au

COL ELLIOTT PERFORMS AT THE GRAND By Melissa Walsh For four decades Aussie comedian Col Elliott has been making crowds across the country laugh and now brings his special brand of humor to the Mornington Peninsula with Col’s Final (Fair Dinkum) Farewell Tour. As part of a generation of Australian standup comedians, along with Rodney Rude and Kevin “Bloody” Wilson, Elliott portrays the larrikin image with plenty of fart gags and casual politically incorrect jokes with characters like the failed kamikaze pilot, a Pakistani Elvis impersonator, and an Italian ambassador named Guisseppe Lasagne. The 67 year old funny man is performing at The Grand in Mornington on July 7 and says audiences should get ready for an adults only night of standup comedy, crazy characters, music and stories. With four generations of fans, thirteen gold and platinum albums and countless awards to his credit, Elliott is still packing them out with a sense of humor that is timeless. “Nothing and nobody is sacred at my show and it’s certainly not politically correct,” says Elliott, whose comedy started back in the early 1970s when he was in the navy and made extra dollars in the bars of Singapore and Hong Kong doing standup routines. “I still write continually after all these years and have so much material with people

Australian.”
Starting his career in comedy was a natural progression for Elliott who got out of the navy at 23 and won Kevin Dennis New Faces which immediately gave him loads of publicity. “I had no money and needed new tyres for my car so decided to enter the show,” said Elliott, who joined the ranks of stars like John Farnham and Paul Hogan who also gained notoriety through the tv talent show. “I remember I did a gay skit which was very funny but I’m not sure would go down too well these days.” When Elliott first started out there wasn’t a lot of comedians and his first tv show was on Sky Channel. “It was played in all the pubs and really took off in the early 80’s, starting out with ‘Hey you bloody mug’. Comedians weren’t very prolific and before long there came Kevin ‘Bloody Wilson’,” he said. With Col Elliott, you get Australian comedy at its best with a blend of the classics and new material. “It’s a varied show with character comedy like Slugger Milligan, the ultimate misogynist, and my roadie, Chooka Dennis, characters that have their own following. There’s a bit of standup, some music and heaps of storytelling. It’s typically
Elliott admits he’s gotten away with murder in this age of political correctness, and still does. “It’s a different game now from 40 years ago. There are some boundaries you don’t push but still take the mickey out of people,” he said. “I got a real buzz when I won a gold DVD and was presented with Carl Baron who said to me ‘you’re the reason I got into comedy. We used to listen to you all day when I was working and I decided that’s what I wanted to do.’ I thought that was a lovely thing for him to say,” said Elliott who has consistently and successfully maintained a comedy career for decades, and is looking forward to performing in Mornington next month. “I used to live in Rosebud many years ago and still have sisters in Langwarrin so I’ve spent a bit of time on the peninsula. But I’ve never performed at The Grand so it should be a lot of fun. Expect to be surprised and a night of laughter but don’t come if you’re thin-skinned,” says Elliott with a laugh. OTHELLO “O, beware, my lord, of jealousy; It is the green-ey’d monster, which doth mock the meat it feeds on.” Act 3 Scene 3 In a devastating exploration of the battle between love and jealousy, Peter Evans will direct Bell Shakepseare’s Contemporary production of Othello, coming to Frankston on Thursday 4 August. The triumphant general Othello returns from battle with the gratitude of the state – and the love of Desdemona - who defies social convention and her father’s will to marry him. Jealousies around their match and Othello’s rise to prominence simmer to the surface, causing destructive rifts in a story that piles secret upon secret, and betrayal upon betrayal.
Othello’s ensign, Iago, harbours a deeply held resentment and his and Desdemona’s marriage is fatally undermined by the insinuations of a master manipulator. Othello is a saga that probes the human capacity for petty jealousies and revenge while revelling in the sheer wickedness of malicious manipulations. Starring Ray Chong Nee as Othello (Bell Shakespeare’s The Dream and MTC’s I Call My Brothers) and Yalin Ozucelik as Iago (Bell Shakespeare’s Henry IV and STC’s Cyrano de Bergerac) in one of Shakespeare’s most captivating and implosive pairings. Sharks make a statement
PENINSULA LEAGUE
By Toe Punt BONBEACH is starting to flex its muscles in MPNFL Peninsula Division and is starting to make a statement. While all the talk surrounds Frankston YCW and who is going to challenge, the Sharks are emerging as a team that seems to be getting things together at the right time. In what many considered to be a 5050 game against Seaford on Saturday, the Sharks hammered the visitors to the tune of 32 points, 15.8 (98) to 9.12 (66). Bonbeach has now won six of its past seven matches after losing the opening four games of the season. In the corresponding game in Round three, Bonbeach lost to Seaford by 11 points. That’s a 43 point turnaround in two months of footy – that is significant. At the time of going down to YCW by 114 points in Round four and then beating Mt Eliza to open its account the following week, Bonbeach coach Steve Hughes said “perhaps we need YC to kick start us every year”. Kick start the Sharks they have with key players in Shane McDonald and Dylan Jones having a significant impact on games. Jones dominated in the middle on Saturday and McDonald was at his sensational best, booting five goals. Luke Damon is up and running now and having a big impact on the playing ground and results. He booted three majors on Saturday. Matt Douglas was superb again in his seventh game for the season and Jacob Flannery is stringing some good footy together also for the Sharks – that’s where the improvement is coming from, the form of the ‘lesser-likes’ without reputations. The Tigers were right in it at half time and three quarter time, trailing by just 10 and 14 points respectively. The Sharks kicked five goals to two in the last. Brad Doyle and Liam Davenport were outstanding for the Tigers while Aaron Walton kicked three goals. Frankston YCW was held goalless and trailed Langwarrin at quarter time by 14 points. At half time the Stonecats had taken
control and led by five goals and the final margin was 72 points, 14.19 (103) to 4.7 (31). Kangas coach Brad Dredge said on the RPP Footy Show on Saturday morning that the mantra of his side was that they were “hard to play against”. It’s certainly a reputation that the Kangas have among other coaches and they made life difficult for the Stonecats again on Saturday. Anthony Bruhn and Craig Nankervis were superb for the winners while Andrew Withers and Josh Biggs were the best of the blue and white. Pines blew Karingal away in the first quarter and opened up a 42 point lead by half time, eventually winning by 34 points, 17.12 (114) to 12.8 (80). Karingal was able to offer some resistance in the second half, outscoring the Pythons five goals to three. Tim Bongetti was magnificent again for the Pythons with three majors while Luke Potts, Aaron Edwards and Beau Hendry combined in the middle and around the ground to be three of the best players on the park. Key defender Jack Fisher claimed yet another scalp on Saturday, restricting Leigh Poholke to one goal. Chris Hay booted three for the Bulls and Darcy Hope was solid in his first senior outing. Justin Van Unen booted seven goals as Mt Eliza belted Mornington by more than 10 goals, 22.10 (142) to 9.9 (63). The Redlegs booted the first four goals of the match and by half time had opened up a 10 goal break after booting nine majors in the second. Nathan Ryan, James Hammond and Jordan Capkin all got among the goals as the Redlegs flexed their muscle for the first time this season. In the other Sunday game, Edithvale-Aspendale shook off a persistent Chelsea to win by almost four goals. Things were tight in the three quarters before the Eagles skipped away, winning 12.16 (88) to 9.11 (65).

Tigers hold on in a thriller NEPEAN LEAGUE By Toe Punt Even a seven goal last quarter couldn’t help Devon Meadows steal a win against Dromana in MPNFL Nepean Division on Saturday. Trailing by four goals at three quarter time, the Panthers stormed home in the final 30 minutes, albeit never hitting the front, only to fall just short, 15.11 (101) to 14.13 (97). It was Dromana coach Rikki Johnston who proved to be the difference between the sides, booting six goals in a best on ground performance. Rated one of the best defenders of all time, Rikki J has booted 17 goals since swinging himself forward against Tyabb in Round seven. Johnston now forms part of what looks to be a pretty potent forward half, which includes Beau Cosson and Beau McMurray, who both booted three goals on Saturday. Billy Quigley has been sensational for the Tigers this season and his consistency has run against the grain of many of his teammates. Terry Wheeler has also been providing outstanding leadership for the likes of Daniel Marchesani and Ethan Johnstone. The Panthers were gallant again, losing their second straight match
by less than a goal after beating Sorrento three weeks ago. Coach Glenn Michie, who announced his playing retirement at season’s end on Saturday morning’s RPP Footy Show, said that “kids were getting an opportunity”. “When I put my best side on the board in the pre-season, there were more than a dozen blokes on it that are not playing now through injury,” Michie said. “In any club, that makes things pretty tough, however, the kids are getting an opportunity and they are now starting to find their way at the level. Our past few performances have proven that. “We have also been rocked by Beau Miller’s illness and the effect of this news and Beau’s ongoing fight and battle has had a significant impact. “We have had a sports chaplin in at our footy club and I think now, some nine weeks later, we’re just starting to get a handle on it. “Beau Miller is one of the strongest people, both mentally and physically, I have ever had the fortune to meet in my 20 years of playing senior football. He’s fighting one hell of a battle but the whole footy community, throughout the MPNFL, is right behind him and his family,” Michie said. Jesse Bowe played arguably his best game for the Panthers while
Steve Roberts continues to dominate in his return season after knee reconstructions. Roberts would be leading the club B&F in his first season. Chris Doria is also having a very consistent season. Frankston Bombers bounced back from its defeat at the hands of Sorrento last week, belting Crib Point 16.16 (112) to 5.4 (34). The Bombers were in an uncompromising mood on Saturday and put the Magpies to the sword. With Beau Muston missing with a knee injury and Zac White missing through suspension, it left the door ajar for one of the best players to ever grace an MPNFL field in Brian O’Carroll to return. Despite not playing footy for almost three years, O’Carroll was slotted straight back into the senior team. Muston told the RPP Footy Show that while he is “all for club culture and setting the right example”, O’Carroll was an exception to the rule. “Brian is one of the best and most decorated players this footy club has ever seen and I had no hesitation putting him straight back into the senior team,” Muston said. “We need him up and running when the whips are cracking. He is in a great place mentally and just wanted to get back playing footy with his mates.
“It had nothing to do with what we might be able to achieve this season, Brian would have come back if we were on the bottom of the ladder.” Frankston also saw the return of Ryan Kitchen from suspension and a hamstring injury, while Luke James made an impact with four goals. Michael Maiorino was also sensational yet again with six goals, while the unheralded Josh Francis and Josh Chapman continue to find the footy. The Magpies, who have been ultra-competitive in recent weeks, were never in the hunt. Mitch Stansborough played his best game since crossing from Mornington, as did Matty Hogan, since crossing from Frankston YCW. Dean Warry and Luke Herrington are just stars! Rosebud flexed its muscles and added some valuable percentage, smashing Tyabb 19.29 (143) to 5.7 (37). Inaccuracy cost the Buds dearly, however, didn’t prevent a 100 plus point win. Keegan Downie booted seven goals for the Buds and was one of his team’s best while Ryan Spooner (three goals) and Greg Bentley put on a clinic. Jake Anderson and Rohan McGrath were the best of the Yabbies.

Hail, hail the nine men of Frankston Pines SOCCER
By Craig MacKenzie FRANKSTON Pines returned from the Latrobe Valley with a precious point on Saturday as it bids to avoid relegation from State 1 South-East. The Monterey Reserve side earned a 3-3 draw against Morwell Pegasus in dramatic circumstances ending this catch-up fixture with nine men. Pines central defender Nick Lekakis and goalkeeper James Laminski were unavailable due to holidays but the side was bolstered by the midweek captures of forwards Josh Calle from Langwarrin and Naseer Mohammad from Casey Comets. Ioasa Saemo took up a central defensive role alongside Ben Caffrey while Calle partnered Mathew Hames up front. The visitors dominated the opening half-hour but couldn’t break through. Calle got onto the end of a Stefan Soler cross in the opening minutes but his shot was saved by teenage Morwell keeper Liam Andersen. In the 6th minute Andersen did well to tip over a Calle free-kick and Calle thought he’d opened the scoring in the 13th minute but his attempt was cleared off the line. In the 28th minute Pines paid dearly for losing possession when a Morwell player slammed the ball into young Graham Hill who had instinctively turned side-on. Pines supporters were up in arms as the referee pointed to the spot and sent off Hill before Morwell’s John Kuol struck his penalty attempt past Pines custodian Sam Grigg to make it 1-0.
Pines pride: Senior coach Billy Rae. Picture: Darryl Kennedy
Eight minutes later Pines were staring down the barrel when a defensive mix-up between Caffrey and Saemo enabled Morwell striker Mat Luak to slot the ball past Grigg to make it 2-0. Right on half-time Calle again was denied by Andersen after good leadup play by Kane Bentley. But two minutes into the second stanza John Negassi played Calle in and he turned and struck a firm shot past Andersen to make it 2-1. Hames had two chances to score in the 52nd minute but his first shot was blocked by Andersen and his
second attempt from the rebound came off a defender and went out for a corner. In the 57th minute Hames again broke clear but rather than cutting the ball back he went for goal and his shot struck Andersen and went out for a corner. Andersen’s sole blemish came in the 67th minute when his poor clearance was met just inside the attacking half by Pines veteran Caffrey whose perfect strike sent the ball sailing over Andersen and into the unguarded Morwell goal for a stunning equaliser.
In the 70th minute Pines gave the ball away and Morwell hit hard on the break with Malesh Jadaeile finally getting the vital touch to make it 3-2. Caffrey protested to the referee claiming offside and was yellow carded. The impact of that caution was felt 15 minutes later when a Caffrey bodycheck earned a second yellow and a dismissal leaving Pines with just nine men. But Pines kept pressing and in the 95th minute a Matt Davis free-kick was headed out for a corner. Davis took the corner and the ball fell to Bentley at the far post and he volleyed it home to become an instant hero. “To get a 3-3 draw in these circumstances was wonderful, said Pines gaffer Billy Rae. “The players should be so proud of that performance because we played them off the park with 10 men. “I couldn’t ask for any more from these players. Pines was the only local side in action last weekend. Langwarrin, Peninsula Strikers and Seaford United were due to play previously postponed fixtures but once again their games were called off. It was particularly frustrating for Strikers who arrived at Anderson Park for Saturday’s reserves fixture against Doncaster Rovers to find that the ground hadn’t been marked out. Eventually someone from Doncaster started marking out the pitch but they used lime, which is illegal, tried to paint over it but to no avail and the
senior referee called off the senior fixture. “I don’t know what’s going on up there but it was a complete shambles, said Strikers president Mark Brandon. However, there was a positive aspect to the shemozzle as Doncaster central midfielder Matt Bell is expected to join Strikers this week after approaching Strikers assistant coach Billy Buchanan. “He’s been involved with Derby County back in England and he’s only in his mid 20s so he’s exactly what we’ve been looking for, said Buchanan. Meanwhile State 4 South league leader Skye United fell victim to thieves last week when its storage facility at its home ground was broken into. Items stolen included trailers, portable goals, exercise equipment, footballs, training bibs and kitchen equipment. The club has taken to social media to itemise the stolen items and to appeal to anyone with information to contact Frankston police. NEXT WEEKEND’S GAMES Saturday, 9 July, 3pm: Mornington v South Springvale (Dallas Brooks Park), Frankston Pines v Mooroolbark (Monterey Reserve), Clifton Hill v Langwarrin (Quarries Park), Peninsula Strikers v Noble Park Utd (Centenary Park), St Kilda v Seaford Utd (Elwood Park), Skye Utd v Springvale City (Skye Recreational Reserve), Rosebud Heart v Casey Panthers (Truemans Road Recreation Reserve), Chelsea v Baxter (Edithvale Recreation Reserve).
