Introduction

A history of Hastings THIS is an edited version of an address by Valda Cole to the Mornington and District Historical Society on July 12, 2011 GOOD morning everyone, it’s a joy to be with you once more – bringing back memories of the first occasion when I had the pleasure of speaking at a meeting of your society. I was 32 years younger, and we even had Hunter Rogers in one of the back rows. Hunter’s enthusiasm for history was infectious, and in the 1970s Harry [Cole] and I spent many an hour with him at the Tanti Hotel, where he enjoyed an evening meal, and where we occasionally stopped on our way back to Tyabb after collecting our sons from the Peninsula School – no McDonald’s in those days. Some years ago, I had the pleasure of being guest speaker at the Leslie Moorhead Lecture when the focus was on Hastings and its fishermen. This paid tribute to the role Leslie played in the formation of a separate historical society on the Western Port side of the peninsula, which had previously come under the umbrella of the Mornington and District Historical Society. And now, once again, our towns are linked by the 150th anniversary of the gazetting of the townships of Rye, Dromana, Mornington and Tyabb in 1861. About 10 years ago, bicentenaries were the fashion of the day on the peninsula: George Bass’s whaleboat voyage, John Murray in the Lady Nelson, Matthew Flinders in Investigator, and then the Sorrento settlement. When those European visitors departed, the Bunurong people found relative peace – until a new wave of people settled on the Yarra in 1835. So with Melbourne’s bicentenary long behind us, it’s now sesquicentenaries. And here I am reminded of a visiting American professor who once chided me (with some humour) “You Australians love anniversaries”. “Don’t we all?” was my reply. He was here, enjoying the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nevil Norway. After the Second World War, this aeronautical engineer, better known as Nevil Shute, made his home in Langwarrin. As Nevil once told us: “You know, I could have lived in any country of the world, but I chose Australia. I could have lived in any state, but I liked Victoria. What’s more, I could have lived in any region, but who would want to go beyond the beautiful Mornington Peninsula?” That reflection is a good reminder of things achieved throughout peninsula communities in the 150 years since our townships were proclaimed. Under the Victorian Government’s 1860 Land Act, the governor was given power to define and proclaim towns, and the Victoria Government Gazette published on Monday 25 February 1861 testified this was done in a big way. Sir Henry Barkly’s Proclamation on the previous Friday listed 186 townships. These included not only the four peninsula townships of Rye, Dromana, Mornington and Tyabb, which we are commemorating, but also a fifth one – the nearby township of Osborne, which was surveyed in 1859. One hundred and fifty years is, of course, just a blink in the life of the Bunurong people whose tens of thousands of years of occupancy preceded the arrival of Europeans. Their well-worn tracks across the peninsula may be seen on some of our district’s first maps, including those drawn when the cattle stations were surveyed into Crown allotments, ready for sale by government. The parishes of Frankston and Moorooduc were surveyed in 1854 and the adjacent Parish of Tyabb four years later. With the gold rush years behind, the increase in population down here was amazing, and by 1860 we had our first municipal government with the formation of District Road Boards, followed 12 months later by the Proclamation of Townships. The growth of the townships of Mornington, Rye and Dromana is well understood. But the township of Tyabb needs some explanation, because it is not the town we know today. The

By Valda Cole OAM

gazetted township was near Hastings, while today’s Tyabb is well to its north. It was but a small fishing village, variously designated King’s Creek, Tyabb or Hastings. King’s Creek is the older name, imposed on the locality by a family who settled there at an early date; Tyabb is the name of the government township; and Hastings the name of the private township adjoining. To understand the King’s Creek name and the identity of the family who “settled there at an early date”, we need to go back to the days when we were still in the waste lands of the colony of New South Wales; back to 1845 when Martha Jane King ran the 15,000-acre

Hastings, it even included a land grant of four allotments for a church. So what happened? Why did that official township wither as it did? Had the Crown allotments at the Somerville end been purchased by speculators not interested in farming, the story may have been different. The first sales there attracted a group of enthusiastic young men with families, who established permanent homes. Mt Eliza Road Board minutes contain fascinating references to Mr Thornell of Tyabb regarding drains, Mr Shepherd of Tyabb about road clearing, Mr Grant of Tyabb on culverts, and so on. Not surprisingly, these settlers (in the area we now know as Somerville) wanted

cattle station Bunguyan on land she leased from the government. This remarkable 55-year-old widow operated her cattle run for 14 years and was one of only three women in Victoria to occupy a station for the entire time of its leasehold. Mrs King retired to Mornington in 1859, dying in the following year at Tanti Grange. The old cattle properties were not surveyed, but simply described by distances, angles and creeks, with the station holder’s initials sometimes chiselled into tree trunks. On Bunguyan, Watson and King’s creeks and a bush fence helped to separate cattle. Mrs King’s homestead was centrally located on the station near fresh water and bush tracks. That section, known as a pre-emptive right, was surveyed ahead of the parish survey. This gave pastoralists the opportunity of purchasing their homestead block before the sale of Crown lands so that their improvements would not be lost to higher bidders. Naturally, though, the ruling price was paid for the land. In the 1858 survey, Michael Callanan marked out a township reserve with a network of streets to serve the entire Parish of Tyabb, with its multitude of allotments stretching from today’s Somerville down to present-day Hastings. Three years later, that reserve was gazetted as the township of Tyabb. Situated on pleasantly rising ground to the north of present-day

their own community. The township of Tyabb was much too far away from their settlement on Eramosa Road East. To start things off, three residents – Alfred Jones, James Grant and James Clarke – made a private gift of an acre of land for a church-schoolhouse and named their community Somerville. This site, a little south of the Lower Somerville and Eramosa roads corner, is marked today by a plaque. The naming of the town and several of its streets reflects the links a number of the selectors had with Canada. Somerville, Guelph and Eramosa were all early settlements in Ontario. The Eramosa East area flourished for several decades, until the opening of the railway line a mile further west. With a wine saloon, a new hotel, an Anglican church, and a railway station at the very centre of the parishes of Moorooduc, Frankston and Tyabb, the new town of Somerville raced ahead. And so the first Somerville became known as Lower Somerville. But what about the southern end of Tyabb parish? What events came to play there that the gazetted township slipped into oblivion – under the rather strange name of Old Tyabb Township? When we were school children, it just didn’t seem to make sense, and it even baffled our teachers. But let’s turn again to the map; to the part

on the foreshore marked ‘fishing village’ - because that’s where the action was - and with a story going well back into the pastoral age. The explorer and scientist William Blandowski summed it up this way when he visited Western Port many years before the Proclamation of Townships took place: “Oysters are obtained near King’s Station in great abundance and about twenty or thirty men...obtain a good living by supplying Melbourne and Geelong, as well as the immediate neighbourhood...and they are sold on the spot to the traders and people in the neighbouring stations at 6d per dozen.” Living miles away from medicos, most of those fishermen must have been tough, even to survive some of the home remedies. For influenza, a stew of cooked oatmeal, onions and rum was recommended; for “fog fever”, whatever that was, a mixture of vinegar, rum and linseed oil. The fishermen’s associations with the neighbouring cattle stations extended far beyond the sale of oysters. Their foreshore cottages were located within Bunguyan and formed a private community in the station. It was an amicable arrangement; Martha King had a ready reservoir of casual labour living collectively at a strategic location and the men combined parttime employment as station hands and timber cutters with the private enterprise of fishing. This arrangement presented problems when government surveyors moved in and cut the lands up into Crown allotments ready for sale. The fishermen found themselves on the threshold of a new life, with much uncertainty. It took another 13 years for their problems to resolve when something like a “Battle of Hastings” was fought and eventually won in 1871. At the same time, Britain was celebrating with great vigour the octocentenary (800 years) of the 1066 Battle of Hastings. There were headline stories in Melbourne papers, too: ‘10661866 in Hastings, UK – and a battle here in 1866 for the fishing village of Hastings’. When preparing his 1858 parish survey, Michael Callanan faced a dilemma: what to do with the area where the fishermen lived near today’s jetty? He overcame the problem by omitting that portion, leaving the fishing families in a “no-man’s land”. It wasn’t a happy situation – particularly after the 1860 Land Act came into force and they had to pay a licence fee to fish and occupy a small portion of Crown land. It was now a case of paying a five -shilling fee every three months, with big questions about cottage ownership. Living outside the new township of Tyabb, through which King’s Creek flowed, they saw little relevance in the name King’s Creek, and for a while, as they sought to establish an identity, they called their little settlement Star Point. The fishing settlement with its haphazardly placed cottages was out on a limb with poor access over King’s Creek to the surveyed town. It was then that John Charles King, Martha’s eldest son, entered the scene, presenting a petition to the Mt Eliza District Road Board for the construction of a bridge over the creek and using the name ‘Hastings’. Official criteria of the day encouraged the use of British dignitaries when naming towns, but in the case of Hastings, the name also had overtones of a battle between King and Callanan’s choice of township. Callanan was a surveyor of some authority who became Surveyor-General of Victoria, but John King understood the powers of persuasion. He was first town clerk of Melbourne when its boundaries were proclaimed, and a delegate to Britain for the stopping of transportation of convicts. When in England, he presented a petition for development of a mint in Melbourne and represented the Port Phillip District in its separation from New South Wales. He served for a short time in Victoria’s second parliament, was a vice-president of the Lands Board, a commissioner of public works and, for many years, business manager of the Argus newspaper.

Introduction King had an empathy with the village and the men who had served his mother’s station, but he also recognised the area’s potential and purchased a 112-acre allotment that is now the Hastings central business district. King’s first subdivision was for a hotel, the forerunner of today’s Westernport Hotel, next to which was a small thoroughfare that was the beginning of today’s High St. With the hotel and the construction of a pier underway, the future of the village was assured and the fishermen finally gained title to their cottages. Twenty-seven acres of foreshore land was subdivided into allotments to allow the fishermen to purchase the land where their cottages stood. It’s streets include Pike, Herring, Salmon and Mullett and 66 acres was reserved for public purposes. Although John Charles King did not live to see the survey of the village of Hastings in 1871, a family member assisted several nonEnglish speaking fishermen in their applications for land, while his daughter, Elizabeth, owned the allotment opposite the hotel until 1919, when George Keast of Somerville established a store there. Only three of the fishing families who gained ownership of their cottages when the village of Hastings was surveyed were not of British origin; Kong War and Ah Khan, who were active in the curing of fish, and Sebastiana Orsino of Sicily. After the jetty was built, Chinese curing works were set up on the foreshore. This overcame the summer-time problem of getting fish to distant markets in a saleable state. It was reported that in the first week of operation, 2.5 tons was sent to Melbourne and other markets. Many of those early families have continued associations with Hastings, as have descendants of a number of Italian families who arrived later. Mirabella, Incigneri and Sposito come quickly to mind; and then there was the Panelli family, who, with four beautiful daughters, left for Melbourne. In 1889 the village of Hastings, which was smaller than all of its neighbouring Crown allotments, was gazetted as the township of Hastings. The independent and historic area,

which was never part of Tyabb, extends from the foreshore frontages of Marine Parade and Skinner Street back to Salmon Street. It is now the centre of municipal administration and of civic and festive activities of the town. All the other places we now frequent in Hastings – supermarkets, banks, railway station, and Anglican and Catholic churches – developed outside the gazetted township boundaries of either Hastings or Tyabb. And now, just when everything seems sorted out, let’s add to the confusion. Hastings Primary School, Hastings Uniting Church and the Hastings Football Club are all in Tyabb township, but Tyabb Cemetery is not. The petition for that historic cemetery site, across the water from Star Point, was signed by residents across the breadth of the parish of Tyabb, for “a permanent cemetery or burying ground for the Parish and Township”. So what’s in a name? Even the first edition of the Mornington Standard had to justify its title when someone took exception to it. Their response on 5 October 1889: “We certainly have a perfect right to use the name Mornington as part of the title of our journal. Although our printing and publishing house is located in Frankston – a township within the County boundary – we intend to equally and fully represent the other parts of the County. That first edition was headed: Mornington Standard Circulating throughout the Peninsula: Frankston, Mornington, Dromana, Sorrento, Portsea, Flinders, San Remo, Grantville, Phillip Island, Hastings, Balnarring, Somerville, Mordialloc, Etc. Clearly, the townships of Tyabb and Osborne were by then in the “Etc” category. Come to think of it, Rye is not there either. We’ll now take a quick look at today’s Tyabb, where Martha King made her home. Following her departure for Mornington, the area became known as “Stuart’s Flat” after settler Captain Francis Stuart, a member of the first Mt Eliza District Road Board and a fore-

bear of Phyllis Cole of Merricks. By 1889, however, when the railway lines to Stony Point and Mornington opened, the 1861 township of Tyabb had been absorbed into Hastings, and it was decided to name the station between Somerville and Hastings as “Tyabb”. A very good decision, too, because it was on the track from Port Phillip to Gippsland that the name “Tyabb” was first written down by a European – 21 years, in fact, before the gazetting of towns. “We encamp’d at a place called Teyup,” wrote the peninsula’s Protector of Aborigines, William Thomas, on 5 February 1840 when he and a party of 57 Bunurong people passed through by dray, with one of the Aborigines going ahead with a spear held aloft to mark the way. The spelling of the name changed many times over the years as Europeans grappled with the Kulin language, progressing from Teyup, Tyeup, Tiab, Taib and Tyab, before reaching the familiar spelling of Tyabb. Half a century later, travellers passed through by steam train. And what an important role the railways played in the future of the orchards and fruit tree nurseries in the Somerville-Tyabb area. This industry, fostered by a government bonus and encouragement planting scheme introduced in 1890, was aimed not only at interstate, but also world markets. When large acreages came into production, government cool stores were built. These were then transferred to local co-operative groups. The fruit industry became the backbone of the economy in the Shire of Frankston and Hastings during the first half of the 20th century. The municipal office of the shire was once in Somerville. I’m now going to conclude with a story. This begins with an Australia Day contest run by The Age newspaper a couple of decades ago, when people were invited to submit recipes with an Australian theme. I thought I’d have a little fun, and put together a simple recipe called “Settlers’ Soup”. The main ingredient linked in with French exploration of Western Port in 1802 when Louis Freycinet wrote:

“The only source of edible vegetable that was found on the islands by the fleet was a sort of wild oseille. It was enjoyable as it was wholesome.” So if those explorers enjoyed our sorrel (for that’s what it was), perhaps the village settlers on French Island might have found it useful in the depression years of the 1890s, hence the name Settlers’ Soup. Not surprisingly, this rather strange entry didn’t rate well in the initial judging until it was submitted to someone with a sense of history who decided to cook and sample it. Result? It won first prize: a fine dinner. I had all but forgotten this until I looked down the 2011 list of Queen’s Birthday honours and noted that a peninsula resident, the late Leon Massoni, had been posthumously awarded an OAM for his services to tourism and vineyards. It was at the Tolarno restaurant operated by Leon that the winners of The Age recipe contest dined, and where he was a warm and hospitable host, fascinated, too, that “someone from Hastings Historical Society” had received the prize for soup. “You know,” he enthusiastically told us, “I often go down to Hastings and sit on the jetty contemplating that this is where, for our family, it all began.” Now back to one of the Italian fishing families mentioned earlier, the one with the four beautiful daughters. Having been a market gardener near Pisa in Italy, Signor Panelli combined fishing with vegetable growing, cultivating land around their cottage on the foreshore near Hastings jetty. Specialised vegetables were soon being supplied to Melbourne restaurants. Before long, through Signor Panelli’s beautiful daughters, the Virgona, Massoni, Ferguson and Watson families flourished. How could Melbourne have done without them? These families created the restaurants and bars that helped establish Melbourne as the gastronomic capital of Australia - Florentino, Balzac, Tolarno, Ferguson’s Pastries and Jimmy Watson’s Bar.

The town of fishermen’s choice PRIOR to the 1860s, the area of Hastings was often visited by fishermen who recognised the place as one where fish were so plentiful a man was able to catch a generous haul and make a decent living. Most of the men fished from a boat and their day’s work was well rewarded. Their catch was transported to fish markets in Melbourne on a spring cart drawn by three horses. It was not unusual for as many as 60 baskets to be forwarded in one load. Quite often the fishermen stayed in the area while they were fishing. They erected small shelters in what is now Skinner Street, Hastings. This was before land was available for purchase and before the area was surveyed, so the huts and houses were built higgledypiggledy, some close to the track and some closer to the pier. Most of the buildings were one or tworoomed huts, modestly designed for the fisherman to live in. When the first survey took place in 1871, it was a challenge for the surveyors to fit these huts and houses in the authorised survey. Drawing a straight line on paper, as surveyors are wont to do, might cut through one of the fishermen’s huts and some were built on easements earmarked for future roads. After the survey, the fishermen were given the opportunity to purchase their dwellings. Fishermen of the day were friendly with each other, but often jealously guarded their special fishing spots.

Jetty an essential part of life past, present and future IN the 1860s, the early fishermen realised the need for a jetty to be built close to their favourite fishing spots. They were encouraged by the fact that a jetty at Schnapper Point (Mornington) had been built in 1857 and another at Frankston the same year. On 12 July 1864, a tender by William Murray was accepted for the erection of a jetty at Star Point in Hastings. Immediately the jetty was built, it became a focal point of life at Hastings and has been used by fishermen ever since. The Hastings Fish Shed, at the head of the

jetty, was built about 1866 and continues to be one of the important historic buildings at Hastings. Over the years the jetty has had constant use and has needed maintenance to keep it safe. In more recent times very little money was spent on repairs and the Department of Sustainability and Environment planned to demolish part of the jetty and replace it with a concrete floating pontoon. Residents objected to what they saw as a “cheap option” and a rally was held at the jetty on 3 October 2010. A petition of 300 signatures

was sent to the Parliament and a planning objection was lodged. Following the election of a Liberal Coalition state government in 2010, Hastings MP Neale Burgess continued to press for a new plan that would take into consideration the jetty’s historic significance. In the new design, fishing and boating aspects will be separated. Residents of Hastings and the surrounding area hold the jetty close to their hearts and want to ensure it remains a cherished community resource for generations to come.

Simple notice announced the Early names gazetting of peninsula towns for Hastings THERE are many towns in Victoria commemorating 150 years since they were gazetted. The towns were gazetted with a simple notice in the Victoria Government Gazette on 25 February 1861. Among them were four towns on the Mornington Peninsula: Rye (first known as Tootgarook), Mornington (Schnapper Point or, as it was sometimes spelt, Snapper Point and known among locals at Hastings as ‘The Point’), Tyabb (later changed to Hastings) and Dromana. The gazetting of the township of Tyabb, in the Parish of Tyabb (a parish is a much larger area) is found on page 409 of issue 29 of the Victoria Government Gazette:

“TYABB, County of Mornington, Parish of Tyabb – Commencing at a point bearing east 1 chain 50 links from the north-east angle of portion 86A; bounded on the north by a road 1 chain wide, bearing east about 6 chains 30 links and S 72° 42’ E 90 chains; on the east by section 77 and a line bearing S 17° 18’ W 42 chains to the shore of Western Port Bay, and by the shore to a point bearing east about 90 chains 10 links from the south-east angle of section 90, on the south by a road 1 chain wide bearing west about 49 chains; and on the west by a road 1 chain 50 links wide bearing north 83 chains 14 links to commencing point. The bearings are given with reference to the true meridian.”

Rough road to anywhere PEOPLE travelling from Hastings to Frankston and on to Melbourne often faced a hazardous journey, with unmade and muddy roads presenting a constant hazard. In the earliest days of European settlement, bush tracks connected the pastoral runs of Coolart on Western Port, Bunguyan (Tyabb/ Hastings), Carrup Carrup (Baxter), Chechingurk (Mt Martha) and others further south on the peninsula. Bush hospitality was generous and visitors were warmly welcomed. As Hastings was a fishing area, it was important for the catch to

reach markets quickly and the track along which baskets of fish were hauled by horse and cart was often referred to as the Fish Track. It was essential to develop the road to Frankston and from there to Melbourne. The government of the Colony of Victoria, realising the importance of roads in the development of the colony, made the following announcement in the Victoria Government Gazette of 17 May 1864: “The Governor in Council in exercise of the power conferred by the Local Government Act 1863

has by an Order in Council made on 9th day of May 1864 appointed the road hereinafter mentioned to be a Main Road, in compliance with an application made in accordance with the 219th clause of the Act: viz – The road extending from the township of Frankston to Tyabb [later known as Hastings]. The main road into Hastings was an important one and developed as a coach run for passengers, mail and supplies. It went through the (old) Tyabb area, near Kings Creek and then along the road near the foreshore to Salmon Street.

WHEN a town was first gazetted in the area where Hastings now stands, it was under the name of Tyabb. It later became known as Hastings and the town now called Tyabb lies north of Hastings in an area known as Old Tyabb. Records reveal the spelling was recorded as Tyab, Tiab, Taib and even Tyeup. One of the earlier spellings was recorded in February 1840 by William Thomas, the Assistant Protector of Aborigines, as Teyup. In the journal of his travels he recorded, “encamped with natives at a place called Teyup”. Tyabb was a name applied to the whole district and meant “a land of waterholes”. Some earlier historians and writers erroneously interpreted that this Teyup was derived from ‘Tyaba’, meaning a worm. This is incorrect, as Tyaba is from a northern Australian language and has no connection with the Teyup of Western Port. The area around Hastings

was for a time known as King’s Creek, after Martha Jane King, who held the pastoral lease of Bunguyan from August 1845. The property occupied an area taking in current-day Tyabb down to Hastings and including Sandstone Island. Two signs indicating King’s Creek can be seen when driving along roads coming into Hastings from the north. The area around the pier was known as Star Point. Early entries in the register for Tyabb Public Cemetery on Cemetery Road record the place of burial as Star Point. Hastings has a rich history and stories told by its older residents often yield gems revealing new facets of the past. One of these is that at one point, Hastings was nicknamed ‘Peddle-town’ due to the fact that Henry Peddle, an old-time resident, was involved in so many activities and groups in the town.

Alex McKay (1810-66) fishes at Star Point. 1863 A post office is opened on 4 February 1863 in the Bayview Hotel with Richard Pearce Rogers as postmaster. 1863 The first mail service contract runs between Schnapper Point (Mornington) and Star Point (Hastings) – by horseback two days a week. 1864 A wooden jetty at Star Point (Hastings) is erected at a cost of ÂŁ590 ($1180). 1864 The freehold of ‘Bunguyan’ (Martha Jane King’s property) is transferred to John O’Neill. 1864 John Charles King purchases Crown allotment 94 and builds the first brick, singlestorey house in the township proper. 1865 Captain James Hall draws a sketch of early Hastings showing the jetty. 1865 Henry Hawkins Peddle arrives in Hastings. 1865 A Gippsland newspaper reports that a party of Chinese people had started fish curing on the beach at Hastings. 1866 John Skinner is the Sandstone Island lessee and obtains the freehold on 21 August 1866. 1867 Henry Hawkins Peddle applies for a hotel licence. 1867 Duke of Edinburgh visits Victoria. 1868 William Pout’s Western Port Hotel is built (not the double-storey hotel now known as the Westernport on the corner of High and Salmon streets). 1869 Tyabb Rural School No. 73 opens. 1870 Henry Hawkins Peddle buys land at Hastings (also known jokingly as “Peddletownâ€?). 1870 Tyabb Rural School No. 73 has an official inspection on 10 September 1870 and records show an average attendance of 21 children. 1870 Included in the fishermen of the area are Richard Grayden, Joseph Engeene (Incigneri), Richard Robinson, Charles Davice (Davis), Edward Salmon, James White, Charles Romeo, John Wilson, Evan Jones, Harry Kernot, Sebastiano Orsino, Henry Prosser, Daniel Sheehey, William and John Carstairs, Thomas Lothian, Edward Sainty, John Cairns (Kearns) and Arch, David, James and Thomas Mentiplay.

Genesis of a place for the dear departed WHEN the town of Hastings was being established, people built simple houses. Next a shop was built and then a hotel to provide locals with basic services. Residents then went about getting a school, which took some years to achieve, and roads were built. Thoughts then turned to a place for the dear departed – a public cemetery. In the Victoria Government Gazette of 27 December 1865, notification was given of the appointment of trustees for the cemetery at Tyabb (later called Hastings). It read: “James Hall, William Lawson Patterson, John O’Neill and Anthony Spencer to be Trustees of the land set apart on 24th February 1862 for cemetery purposes at Tyabb. The first burial in the cemetery register was that of Alexander Mackay, aged 56, on 6 May 1866. He was a fisherman who had lived at Star Point. His body was carried to the cemetery in a boat. Seven of the early entries gave the place of residence of the deceased as Star Point and then the use of the name Tyabb started. The first entry using the name Hastings was on 12 January 1872 for the burial of James Nelson, 71, whose residence was listed as Hastings. He was a saltmaker and his body was carried by coach. The names Star Point, Tyabb and Hastings were all used and refer to the area known today as Hastings. Some family researchers do not realise that there is only one cemetery – the Tyabb Public Cemetery at Hastings and not two cemeteries, one in Tyabb and one in Hastings. In 1988, as part of celebrations marking the

bicentenary of European settlement in Australia, the Shire of Hastings Historical Society (now Hastings-Western Port Historical Society) and the Shire of Hastings placed a plaque at the cemetery in honour of William Lawson Patterson, one of the four foundation trustees. Lawson was born in Scotland in 1808 and died at Hastings in 1890. One thing that hasn’t changed over the years is that people wishing to place flowers on a grave are advised to bring their own water. There is a tap attached to a very small tank that gets its water off the roof of a small pavilion, but only a trickle of water comes through.

COBB & CO coaches were a boon to the people of Australia and gave regular and reliable transportation from various townships throughout eastern Australia. The company was founded by four Americans, including Freeman Cobb, who ran coaches on a connecting network of roads. The company was also known as Robertson Wagner & Co but was better known under the name of Cobb & Co. It was on 30 January 1853 that the first of the Cobb & Co coaches were placed upon the roads of Australia and began regular services from the Victorian goldfields to Melbourne. Quite often Cobb & Co coaches carried the mail and their reliability and regular service meant that mail was swiftly delivered. Passengers also were ensured a safe and comfortable journey made without undue delays. As the popularity of Cobb & Co grew it was quite common for any regular coach service to be referred to as ‘Cobb & Co’. William Mentiplay gained a stage carriage licence in 1871. The contract was for a thrice weekly mail service to and from Cowes on Phillip Island to Mordialloc via Frankston, Somerville, Hastings, Sandy Point and Balnarring. In his book The Old General Store, historian and author Bruce Bennett reported that Cobb & Co had a station, stables and repair shop with an iron fence all around it opposite Orsino’s store at Hastings. It was a picturesque sight to see the coach outside the hotel at Hastings (see photo below). Mr William Heelan was the driver of the last coach to Hastings in 1890. He lived in Frankston but in 1883 purchased land at Hastings. *** The local newspaper Mornington Standard in July 1890 gave the following news item: “Hastings: On Tuesday last the last of Cobb & Co’s coaches took its final departure from Hastings engineered by Mr W Heelan who after 16 years of driving to Hastings has gone to seek fresh fields and pastures new, where the iron horse has not yet put in an appearance. During the long time Billy Heelan has been amongst us, he has earned the respect of all with whom he came in contact, and whose good wishes will accompany him to the place where he may next sojourn.” Below: Bay View Hotel, Hastings, pre 1900

The paddle steamer Sarah weighed 10 tons and was 36 feet, 1873 60 fishermen and 20 boats working from Hastings. 1873 Cobb & Co establishes stables and repair shop at Hastings, near foreshore. Fish is transported in baskets on top of the mail coach to Melbourne via Frankston. 1874 The steamer Oscar – 29 tons, 73 feet – is built in Footscray. It was renamed Ventor in 1924 and operated from Hastings to Phillip Island. 1874 HMVS Cerberus, a 235-foot, iron-plated Monitor class ship, arrives in Melbourne. The Colony of Victoria looks after its own defences, which are deemed of low concern in the 1870s. 1875 The 69-foot steam ferry Eclipse is built in Melbourne. It later operates from Hastings, meeting passengers from Cobb & Co coaches and taking them to Phillip Island. 1876 William Giller Davis (born in Bath, England, in 1830) came to Victoria in 1852. He had the contract to supply timber for the Eclipse, which starts a passenger service to Phillip Island on 1 November. 1877 On 18 June HMCS Victoria leaves Melbourne for Hastings where defence commissioners are picked up for tour of Western Port to determine possible sites for fortification of the bay. 1878 William Mentiplay is a salesman at the Melbourne Fish Market. He lengthens a large fishing boat, Sarah, to 36 feet and installs a boiler and engine. Mentiplay also trades as a herbalist and operates the Australian Botanical Institute in Bourke Street, Melbourne. 1878 The Athenaeum Hall in Hastings is built for £225 ($450) and operates as the Hastings Library and Reading Room. 1879 An experimental game of night football in Melbourne under electric lights fails to excite spectators as the players often “disappear” into the shadows. 1879 Captain Hannah becomes master of the steam ferry Eclipse. 1880 Mr Flemyng, head teacher of Hastings School No. 1098, forced to exclude all children under the age of 6 due to overcrowding. 1880 The Frankston Fish Company closes its Hastings branch in November. 1880 Ned Kelly is captured at Glenrowan in June and executed in Melbourne on 11 November.

1909 – SAWMILLS Two local mills formed Peninsula Saw Milling, where 20 hands would at times produce 8000 packing cases each week. Stringy box and messmate, and pinus insignis when available, were used to manufacture export cases for the rapidly developing fruit industry. 1909 - SWIMMING POOL A public meeting was held in January 1909 to form a company to advance the idea of public baths. Later that year, the Lands Department gave land on the foreshore for 1/- per year (a shilling, now 10¢) on the condition that it be used for bathing purposes only. But it was another 30 years before Hastings citizens enjoyed the swimming facilities, with the establishment of a salt water pool with a pumping station. Many a time you would go there for a swim on a hot day to find the tide out and the pool empty. Other days the pool was full and you would see toadies swimming as well.

1921 – 1930

Hastings 1925-1939 By octogenarian and Hastings resident, Alby Smith I WAS born on 1st June 1925 at North Fitzroy and came to Hastings when I was just 14 days old. My mother was Isabella Smith (nee Smith) and my father was Frank Smith. Sadly, my father died when I was about two years of age. My mother later married Sidney Loraine Bryant and Jean, Toby and Billy were born to them. My mother and my maternal grandmother lived at Hastings. As a child growing up during the Depression, it was hard to imagine what parents went through to feed their children and to provide warm clothes to keep the cold out so as to enable us to be as comfortable as possible. I had an unusual childhood, as I lived with my grandmother, Annie. She was born Annie Kearns and she married firstly George Hobden, in 1880, and then after he died she married Abraham Smith, who died in 1929. Because of my grandmother’s ill health, I had to learn to cook when quite young, to wash and iron clothes and be involved in other household jobs. When I was able to, I had time to play with the other boys and be included in games of footy, cricket, marbles, bobs, gathering material for the annual bonfire, etc.

I ran messages for a few of the shop keepers and gathered gum tips for Miss Reid to place in her lolly shop at Hastings. To gain money to buy lollies, we searched around and found empty bottles in order to return them for the deposit money previously paid when purchased. The days at school passed very quickly and I finished school on 22nd December 1939 after obtaining the Merit Certificate. In order to earn money to go to the local pictures we were able to pick fruit at the orchards from the age of 14. I stayed with my grandmother until I was twelve years of age. When one looks back, it seems strange that we only had bread and milk for breakfast, and toast with dripping

instead of butter, but we thought nothing of it at the time. Footwear was only worn for special occasions and so we usually went bare-footed. Without the fish, apples and rabbits that we had to eat, life would have been a lot harder. At the time I was not happy about doing all the things my nana taught me but I now realise that all children should be taught the essentials of life so that when they grow up, they can use that knowledge for their benefit when required. I met a wonderful lady, Brenda Little, a much loved and respected nurse, and we were married on 10th March, 1951 at Burnie in Tasmania. We were blessed with a son and daughter, Gary and Margaret, and shared 62 years together before Brenda sadly passed away on 4th July 2010.

Hastings School no. 1098 Hastings Primary School, 1924.

PARENTS of children became aware of the need for a school in Tyabb [Hastings] and the first application to the Common School Board for aid for a school was made in June 1863. It was unsuccessful, but a second application in February 1866 met with more success. This school was Tyabb Rural No. 73. Western Port historian Valda Cole OAM records in her book Western Port Pioneers & Preachers (1975, The Hawthorn Press) that Captain James Hall of Hastings made the next application in April 1871 on behalf of the local residents for a new school. James Hall was involved in many of the local activities; he had been a sea captain and came to Hastings in 1860 after being at Corinella for four years. He experimented with the propagation of fruit trees, was one of the original trustees for Holy Trinity (Anglican) church and was actively involved in campaigning for a school at Hastings. Withdrawal of aid to Tyabb Rural School No. 73 occurred on 31st May 1871 in order for aid to be given to a new school in Hastings - No. 1098. Hastings Primary School still holds this number. The Education Act of 1872 saw the state accept responsibility for the education of children, which was free. In August 1871 Mr Hall requested from the Victorian Board of Education a teacher for the school and the successful applicant was John Betteswarth Flemyng (born 20.12.1817), who had come from Ireland with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity College Dublin, arriving in Australia in 1854. Josiah Ingamells (born 6.7.1853) was the next head teacher in 1882. Since these early beginnings Hastings Primary School No. 1098 has seen thousands of students through its doors and many have fond memories of the school, the oldest primary school in the area. The current principal, Sue Lyons has added her mark, with many innovative programs for the students of the 21st century, and the school continues to take its place as an integral part of the community.

Magical setting on 8.09ha A FULLY fenced 8.09ha ( 20 acre) allotment lends itself beautifully to any manner of agricultural pursuits with ornamental lake and dam, plus bore water. The property consists of several dwellings, one of which is the main homestead that overlooks the gorgeous private lake. The solid brick home is surrounded by established native and fruit trees and has been recently renovated with a new kitchen, which leads out to an entertainment area featuring a 10-person spa. There is a massive open-plan living area designed around a central fireplace and together with the timber ceilings a warm and rustic atmosphere is created. There are four bedrooms, all with built-in robes and ceiling fans, the master bedroom has a small ensuite and there is a larger family bathroom. The second dwelling is a two-bedroom granny flat and the third is the original farm-house, which is un-used at the moment, but still in a habitable condition. With a total of eight bedrooms there is plenty of room here for a number of families or grown-up teenagers. The land is currently being used for grazing stock but would also lend itself to poultry farming or to establish a market garden.

CELLOPHANE FACTORY During the 1950s there was a factory on the corner of Church and Victoria Streets, Hastings, that made cellophane tobacco pouches. These pouches were made by the cellophane sheet being folded so as to form a pouch and then each side of the pouch was sealed by sewing it together on industrial sewing machines, of which there were more than 20 in the factory. At this time, the art of heat sealing cellophane had not been mastered. The daily output of pouches was in the thousands. Mr Bill Wilson was the manager of this factory for most of its life. ACTON ENGINEERING In the early 1950s Mr Bill Row manufactured aluminium folding chairs in High Street Hastings. These chairs were almost identical to chairs on offer now.

Hastings hosiery mill fire

Reported in The Herald on 12 June 1954 FIVE firemen injured at Hosiery Mill fire, Hastings. This sock factory/hosiery mill came to Hastings around 1944 as a decentralized industry. Nine groups of businessmen (locals) formed a Pty. Ltd. Company of some 15 share-holders. The first manager was a Frankston Councillor, Mr Percy Gaskin, who lived in High St, Hastings. At this time, Hastings was a part of the Frankston Shire. Later managers were Mr Fred Gregory, Mr Harry Craig and possibly others. The small factory came to Hastings with a family called Hanna who is understood to have operated at Coburg. This small enterprise provided employment for 10-15 local people for about 20 years until the share-holders found it uneconomical to continue. Originally there were five knitting machines, the numbers had increased to around 20 machines when the factory closed. The factory stood on the corner of Victoria and Church Streets.

CONSTITUTION DAY HASTINGS HALL, 19 OCTOBER 1960 The creation of the new Shire of Hastings was a time for celebration for the town. Twelve councillors were sworn in out the front of the hall before the towns’ citizens. Douglas Thompson was elected shire president and the Shire of Hastings became the 207th Victorian Municipality. Mr Porter commented that the new Shire was evidence of the rapid development occurring on the Mornington Peninsula and would be a valuable addition to the municipalities of Victoria.

1961 – 1970 1961 April - Council wrote to the Education Department about selecting a site for a secondary school at Hastings. Over the next 13 years, a persistent campaign was waged by the community to obtain such a school, but it wasn’t until 1974 that first enrolments were taken at Hastings High School. 1963 May - British Petroleum was the first industrial pioneer of industry at Western Port. The foreshore and commercial area have undergone a remarkable transition since the turn of the century. Reclamation works in the early 1960s transformed the southern and western shores of Hastings Bight into about 60 hectares of magnificent foreshore reserve and parkland. 1966 June - John Lysaght chose Western Port for a steel manufacturing plant and became the biggest land buyer in the Long Island area. In 1967, the company paid nearly $4 million for 1,700 acres of orchards and grazing properties. By mid-1972 John Lysaght Steel facility was operational; this major development was one that forever changed the face of the Hastings, with more houses being built to accommodate the families moving in for work. 1967 April - Cresco announced plans to build a fertilizer plant on 170 acres at Long Island. On 27 September 1967 they got the green light to go ahead. By mid 1972 Cresco had built a $6 million fertilizer and stock feed factory. August - Esso Exploration and Hematite Petroleum were granted a permit to build a fractionating plant at Long Island. In September Cresco Long Island received approval to establish a phosphoric and nitrogenous manufacturing complex on Western Port Bay. 1969 February – Major talks were arranged to discuss the future development of Western Port Bay; Australian and world authorities attended the two-day seminar. July – Western Port Lions Club makes $500 donation to Hastings Hospital building appeal and $600 towards furnishing the Elderly Citizens Club, which is nearing completion. July – Construction of the Tennis Courts on the foreshore; the club is enthusiastic and optimistic about the future. August – The interior of the Hastings Bowling Club clubhouse proceeding well before the opening in September. August – A branch of the Peninsula Ambulance Service will be established at Hastings. The announcement was the highlight of the annual general meeting of Hastings Auxiliary of the Peninsula Ambulance Service, held on February 24 in Hastings Hall. August – Mr L J Herd appointed Hastings Welfare Officer. August – Hastings Basketball Club finished the season with two premiership pennants. October - The Mayor of the English town of Hastings invited our own Hastings Shire Council to stage a Hastings Day to celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The Hastings Day Festival was first held; it became the Western Port Festival, which is now celebrated in February each year.

1983 Australia II won the America’s Cup international yacht race. 1984 Announcement that Coles New World and variety store was coming to Hastings. 1985 June: Western Port Hotel – The old style balcony which once graced the Westernport Hotel in Hastings is to be replaced. The Hastings Council recently granted a permit for significant renovation to the hotel to allow the verandah and balcony areas to be introduced. The owner of the hotel Mr Les Martyn, said recently that he had located the company which made the original wrought iron lace work for the balcony and the structure would be able to be replaced, as they still have the pattern. “I’d like to take the hotel back to what it was like. It’s important to have a link with the past,” he said. The Town Planner Mr Ray Webb told council that renovations would attempt to recapture the original façade treatment, prior to the removal of the balcony and verandah. The proposal will provide a certain charm and attraction for this site, which is effectively the commencement of the commercial centre of Hastings. The proposal should be enthusiastically supported by council as offering a gateway as it were, to the Town Centre. 1986 Roundabout built at intersection of Victoria and High streets. NAB Opened in September. 1988 March – Esso-BHP donated $5000 to Hastings Historical Society’s gun restoration project. The old gun, a breech-loading cannon built in 1864 was one of four guns manned by the Victorian Rangers and drawn by a bullock team. The gun left the Hastings area in 1908, according to Shire of Hastings Historical Society treasurer-president, Edwin Mawson. It was used as a coastal defence gun along the southern coast of Victoria. “We don’t know how the gun ended up in a Colac park, but research is being carried out,” Mr Mawson said.

Newspaper snippets from the decade GIANT SOUNDSHELL FOR HASTINGS In 1993 the proposal to build a giant soundshell on the Hastings foreshore received support from the local community. It was felt that the soundshell would boost tourism and community spirit as it would be a great asset for music groups, entertainers and performers. Hastings Rotary Club, Western Port Festival and theatrical groups supported the concept. Local Councillor, Cr Brian Stahl and Mr Ron Leadbetter of the Western Port Festival headed the project. Mr Leadbetter reported that every year for the Western Port Festival, a stage had to be erected, and then taken down again. It was felt that a permanent stage such as a giant soundshell would be a beneficial and worthwhile project for the whole community. It is interesting to note that this project was not proceeded with and each year, including 2011 at the Western Port Festival, a stage still has to be erected and then taken down again. From time to time, a Soundshell for Hastings is mentioned as a future project. What about the future? Is there still a need for a Soundshell? What do you think of the idea? NEW LIBRARY AT HASTINGS OPENED Work began on the new library, corner Salmon & Pike (now High) Streets Hastings in 1992 and opened in September 1993. Library staff moved 28,000 books from the old library in Western Port Plaza and there was a display of paintings and photographs from the Mornington Peninsula Arts Centre and the Shire of Hastings Historical Society. The library cost $750,000 and received $547,000 from the Federal Government. Dunkley MHR Bob Chynoweth officially opened the library on behalf of the Federal Minister for Housing, Local Government, and Community 1990 August - Gas gives way to solar power. Gas operted navigation lights in Western Port Bay are being replaced progressively by solar powered beacons. To mark the changeover, one of the old lights was presented last week by the Port of Melbourne Authority to the Hastings Historical Society. The old light, together with its gas bottle, will be mounted at the society’s museum cnr Marine Parade and Skinner St, Hastings. 1990 September – Shire’s Budget Hastings Council set three days aside to determine its spending for the coming year. The budget promises to be a tough one as some councilors will go into the estimates meeting with the intention of trying to maintain rates at last year’s level. The Council faces a $1 million ceiling on its total borrowings for the year. Almost $700,000 of this amount has already been committed to six projects in this year’s loans program and it is believed that more projects, still at a negotiating stage, will add another $300,000 to the loan total. 1990 November – Ramp jetty floated by Hastings. Hastings Council has been allocated $52,000 to build a new floating jetty at the Hastings boat ramp. The works at Hastings form part of the State Gov-

Services and Deputy Prime Minister, Brian Howe. The Shire President, Cr Stan Paul unveiled a plaque at the opening. Cr Paul said that the new library would provide residents from all over the Shire with a first rate facility for well into the next century. CLIP CLOP BREAD DELIVERY In December 1993 Hastings residents experienced the clip clop of a horse and cart fresh bread delivery to their door. The horse and cart delivery was the way bread was delivered to the homes in days of the past and was revived by Mr Bruce Forward in his Clip Clop Bread Deliveries. His horse was called Duke and the idea of home delivery of fresh bread was welcomed by the locals. CELEBRATION OF LITERACY In October 1993 with the support of the Shire of Hastings, there was a “Hastings Celebration of Literacy” held at the Western Port Secondary College. The activity was organised by the Hastings Education Committee formed when former Shire President, Cr Brian Stahl recognised a need to improve literacy and numeracy skills within the shire. Schools participating were primary schools at Moorooduc, Tyabb, Tyabb Railway, Somerville, Hastings, St Mary’s, Hastings West Park, Crib Point, St Joseph’s, Bittern, Balnarring and Somers. It is interesting to note that the Hastings Literacy Festival was a great success over the years and is still held on a yearly basis at the Western Port Secondary College with students thoroughly enjoying all the activities.

cleanup of the Crib Point foreshore which removed 500 tonnes of rubbish. He also has been involved in a leadership way with the Western Port Festival. The Young Citizen of the Year for 1992 was Nicole Holt of Crib Point. Nicole made an outstanding contribution to the community by many volunteer hours in childcare with local families, the local community house and pre-school. The Citizen of the Year for 1993, Anne Watt was announced at the Western Port Festival opening ceremony. Anne has had many years involvement in the Hastings Girl Guides after being a Guide and Brownie herself since 1937. After retirement she became involved in the Dolphin Trefoil Guide, a group for retired guides. Anne is also involved with the Hastings Hospital and its adjoining Nursing Home. Anne has also had 20 years active service as a Pink Lady at the Hospital. Before moving to Somerville to live, Anne and her husband, Stewart lived in Watts Road (now Hastings-Flinders Rd) Hastings. Watts Road was named after Stewart’s grandfather, James Watt who was the first mounted policeman at Hastings. The Young Citizen of the Year was also announced at the Western Port Festival. He was Andrew Johnston of Somerville and was a student at the Western Port Secondary College.

have the revealed the latest figures as Hastings is still expanding and growing. ROTARY ANNIVERSARY PARK HASTINGS The Shire of Hastings with Hastings Rotary converted a vacant block of land at the corner of High Street and Watts Rd (now Frankston-Flinders Rd) Hastings into an attractive park and resting place for pedestrians. The use of Australian native shrubs and trees would enhance the area. The park is near the Hastings Police Station. The Shire of Hastings landscape designer, Ian Gosch explained the plan to a Hastings Rotary meeting. This small park adds to the ambience of the area which is nearby to a busy roundabout and fast food outlets.

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR The Shire of Hastings Citizen of the Year for 1992 was Ron Leadbetter of Bittern who was chosen from 11 outstanding nominations. Mr Leadbetter was actively involved with the

HASTINGS NEAR TOP IN GROWTH In a survey taken of growth in municipalities in the Melbourne area Hastings ranked sixth in March 1992. Cranbourne was at the top of the list. Hastings had a growth rate of 3.2% although if looked at over the past five years, it ranked fifth with 4.12% growth. The figures were from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. As there was an official census taken in August 2011 it will be interesting to

FIRST FEMALE COUNCILLOR OF HASTINGS Mrs Lorna Bennetts made history in 1970 as she was the first female to be elected as a Councillor of the Balnarring Riding for the Shire of Hastings. She served as a Councillor for 17 years and was elected the Shire President in 1977-78, going on to become the Shire’s second longest serving councillor. Mrs Bennetts resigned from the Council in 1997 and died in the Hastings Hospital in April 1993. In recognition of Mrs Bennetts’ passion for conservation and love of the native bush, the Shire honoured her by naming the 40 ha bushland reserve at the corner of South Beach Road and Disney Street Bittern. NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER The new Chief Executive Officer of the Shire of Hastings was announced in May 1993. Mr Michael Kennedy came with a wealth of experience and was the unanimous choice of the councillors after 82 applicants applied for the person with 12 persons

ernment’s $1.8 million recreational boating facility works and safety program and will be carried out during 1990-91. State Transport Minister, Mr Peter Spkyer, said the floating jetty would cater for significant tidal movement at the popular launch ramp. 1996 May – Ports, roads and rail the ‘priorities for Hastings’ Priority should be given to the development of new port facilities in the Hastings Port industrial area. This was one of a series of recommendations for the development of the area contained in a report released in April. Other recommendations included duplication of Frankston-Flinders Rd and Western Port Highway links to Melbourne, the rail link to Melbourne upgraded to standard gauge as part of the national rail grid and a new standard gauge rail link to Gippsland. 1990 February - Jewel Shed – Celebrated its second birthday at 32 High St, Hastings. 1990 February – Hastings Day. There will be great excitement in the skies at the Hastings Day celebrations when Flight Lieutenant Chris Teal from the famous RAAF ‘Roulettes’ takes to the air in a daredevil aerobatics display in his Pilatus aircraft. 1990 January 31st. – No reprieve for Hastings Court – Hast-

ings has lost its Magistrates Court, despite strong opposition too the closure. Court hearings, which were held twice a month in Hastings public hall, will now be held at Dromana Court. When the proposal to close down the court was made early last year, it attracted a strong opposition from the Mornington Peninsula Solicitors Association (MPSA), Police and Hastings Council. They all claimed that residents would be severely disadvantaged by the closure particularly in view of practically non-existent public transport between Hastings and Dromana. According to Hastings Chief Executive Officer Bill Featherston, a local court was needed in such a fast developing area, and it was surely the right of every citizen including residents of Hastings, to have ready access to the state’s legal system, he said. Chief Inspector John Woodburne, of Frankston Police, also expressed concern about the closure. This could lead to a dangerous lack of police officers and vehicles in Hastings on court days and present security problems when transferring prisoners to and from court. 1990 April – Another win to Western Port. Westernport the word has disappeared from Stony Point. Now it’s what it should be – Western Port – a sign at the front of the Port of Mel-

bourne Authorities control office at Stony Point had Western Port incorrectly spelt as one word. The sign, placed in 1977, has now been replaced with the correct wording just in time because the port headquarters have now relocated to Frankston/Flinders Rd Hastings. Collector, researcher, author and authority on maritime history Mr Arthur E Woodley, who released a book called Western Port Ferries Past and Present, strongly advocated the historically correct two word style, according to the Hastings Historical Society. According to the Society, Surgeon Geo Bass named Western Port in 1798 when he discovered and entered the area. It appears that early this century people compressed the two words when charges to send messages were charged on the number of words sent. This style increased over the next 50 year until the Victorian Bolte Government established in 1966, a place names committee which decided that the name of the feature in question was Western Port. This was adopted by the Bolte government, but Westernport was still used until August 5, 1985. The Shire of Hastings Historical Society then started campaigning to have the correct style used. The Cain government confirmed the 1966 decision in 1985 and soon afterwards ‘Western Port’ was adopt-

being interviewed for the job and four shortlisted. Mr Kennedy’s referees described him as a high achiever in private industry, a top executive and skilled at handling change. Mr Kennedy in taking up this position took a pay cut and he was so enthusiastic about his new role. Mr Kennedy took over from Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Bruce Billson since the former Chief Executive Officer, Bill Featherston left. Mr Kennedy has continued in this position and in 2011 was confirmed as the CEO of Mornington Peninsula Shire. Mr Bruce Billson is now the Federal Member for Dunkley and previously held the position of Minister for Veteran Affairs. MUSIC WITH SILENT MOVIES On 1st June 1993 the death occurred of Mrs Winnie Walker who played music for the silent movies shown twice weekly by her father, Mr Edwards of Hastings. Winnie would play suitable sound effects for cowboy movies, dramatic scenes, war pictures etc or whatever came onto the screen. Winnie repertoire was vast and she could adapt to the mood of the film. Winnie played the piano for school activities, dances, charity concerts, gym classes, calisthenics, debutante balls and also gave piano lessons. She was selected as the Citizen of the Year for the Shire of Hastings in 1988 and had entries in musical competitions both in Australia and overseas. She was also a poet with her poem Nightfall at Sea recommended for publishing. Mrs Walker’s contribution to the life of the community at Hastings was significant and her encouragement and support to many made a difference. She had also been a Sunday School teacher and active member of Holy Trinity Hastings.

ed by Melbourne media. T1990 May – Gun shells recovered. A shell recovery mission was carried out in Hastings last week to coincide with the last day of Heritage week. According to the Hastings Historical Society, the 16 strong team was successful beyond its wildest collective imagination. In all 19 shells were found. Even though the shells were found along the coastline close to Long Island Point, they were not the usual seashore variety. They were a slightly more dangerous variety – 40 pounder practice shells fired from the famous Hastings “Ham and Beef” Battery guns, 80 to 100 years ago. Of the four guns sent to Hastings, three finished up in storage at the Royal Hotel. Until last week only one of the practice shells had ever been found, but the Historical Society was sure there must be others lying around. 1990 June – Sails ahoy! In Western Port. A lovely lady of the sea is due to arrive in Westernport on Saturday July 7th. She is the newly-constructed Lady Nelson, a replica of the historic sailing vessel which first sailed into the waters of Western Port Bay in 1801. The arrival of the new vessel, built by public subscription in Tasmania, has been sponsored by Western Port Tourism which plans at least a fivemonths stay for the “Lady”.
