‘Blog watch’ for elections By Jo Winterbottom COUNCILLOR Reade Smith has declared he will not run in the October council elections, but will conduct an internet-based campaign to scrutinise, criticise and expose candidates in the elections. In an email sent to all Mornington Peninsula Shire councillors and obtained by The News, Cr Smith stated: “I’m not running for council in October so my new blogg [sic], perhaps named, ‘watching the council watchers’ or ‘disclosing the behaviour of the unruly?’ (I’m sure I will come up with something a bit more witty!) will disclose to the world the behaviours and

statements of a few of those who think they are immune from criticism or the requirement to comply with social ethics and norms. Those who are running for council will receive the same treatment as I experience.” Cr Smith, who served three terms in Mt Eliza Ward before moving to Cerberus Ward, where he is completing his second term, was replying to Safety Beach “council watcher” Joe Lenzo in the aftermath of derogatory comments Cr Smith made about Hastings knitters on his own and other Facebook pages. Cr Smith has repeatedly described Mr Lenzo as “one of the local loony tunes [sic]”. Late last month The News reported

posts on the social networking site in which Cr Reade called Hastings knitters “marauding vandals”. “With adult ‘role models’ like this, no wonder the kids are running amok!” he stated. Later he added, “Hopefully the trouble maker/s will crawl back into their grave and let the WHOLE community enjoy themselves.” After the publication of his comments, he accused The News of hacking into his Facebook account, but all the information quoted was on publicly available pages. The only “hacking” done by The News was to type two words into the Google search engine: Reade Smith.

This led to Cr Smith’s Facebook entries. Cr Smith fell out with the craft group, based at Hastings Community House, amid claims he failed to support local projects. Shire mayor Cr Frank Martin said Cr Smith was one of several councillors to have a Facebook page and he was free to use it as he wished. “These pages have been established and are maintained by the individual councillor, without support or assistance from the shire, and are not monitored by shire officers,” Cr Martin said. “The views expressed by councillors on their private Facebook pages are their own personal views, and do not

represent the views of the council.” Cr Martin did not answer questions from The News about whether councillors should be trained in media law and appropriate use of social media. Cr Smith has been known for his long email exchanges and says he has attended a social media workshop run by the Municipal Association of Victoria. In the above-mentioned email he goes on to explain: “I use Facebook as my temporary blogg [sic], after being shown how to do so at an MAV conference, it is one of my tools to speak with my community ... are you now trying to gag my right to ‘freedom of speech’?”

Baby bond: Anne Holmes and baby Samuel bonding through the Kangaroo Care method.

‘Kangaroo’ skin key to bonding SKIN on skin contact is the best way for parents and babies to bond, says Kate Stokes of Frankston Hospital. The bonding technique, known as Kangaroo Care, encourages skin on skin contact between baby and parent. “Bonding in this way creates a sharing of natural closeness and has an array of benefits for both baby and parent,” Ms Stokes said. “We encourage both parents to actively bond through Kangaroo Care with their new baby, not just mums. “Bonding between dads and their newborns is essential to the baby’s

development and also helps dads feel more involved with the birth and care of their child.” Ms Stokes said benefits of Kangaroo Care for babies included longer periods of alertness, less crying and less chance of colic. “It can also improve weight gain, body temperature and stabilises the heart rate and breathing. “The benefits for mums include increased lactation and shorter hospital stays. “Both parents experience a boost in parental confidence and a reduction in

Pelican Park costs hidden By David Harrison THE shire council has consistently understated the true expenses of operating Pelican Park and Pelican Pantry since the complex opened in late 2003 – against its own policy of how it should account for such businesses. It has never included the actual expenses of interest payments and depreciation of the complex, totalling more than $500,000 annually, in its calculations of the costs of running the aquatic centre/restaurant on the Hastings foreshore. This is like a householder ignoring mortgage payments and maintenance costs of the family home when calculating the family’s annual budget. Mornington Peninsula Shire has seriously underestimated the rental for Pelican Park and Pelican Pantry in a process called “recharging”, which enables the shire to determine its own internal charge for the rental cost of shire assets that are competing against similar private enterprise facilities. A spectacular example of this underestimation came to light in 2007 when a privately owned aquatic centre in Somerville went on the market. The Somerville centre stated its annual rental income was $262,000, when rental for Pelican Park was set by the shire at a base rate of $66,000 – a difference of $196,000 or 397 per cent. The discrepancy was brought to the attention of the Victorian Competition and Efficiency Commission, which responded by urging the shire to review

its estimated commercial rent “for all components of the centre used for commercial purposes”. The review was specific to Pelican Park; it did not include the Pantry. Shire figures made public do not reveal how it responded to the VCEC recommendation. The matter, reported in the Mornington and Southern Peninsula Mail on 1 July 2009, stated that VCEC had found “material gaps” in the shire’s costing exercise. The newspaper also reported that VCEC had found the shire had not established a full cost-reflective pricing structure for the centre’s business ac-

tivities. It said VCEC ordered the shire to provide it with written advice on its progress in implementing its recommendations. VCEC monitors competition by all levels of government that threatens the viability of small local businesses. It aims to ensure that pricing reduces the burden on taxpayers if businesses can provide more effective services at a lower cost than government. The shire regards the property recharge as a way of calculating a charge for the use of a council facility that ensures the true cost of operating the facility is known. This is required to satisfy National Competition Policy

requirements. According to a budget document, the recharge “is assessed by the shire valuer having regard to commercial rentals of similar properties”. It purportedly enables the shire to “determine the full cost of direct services to the community”. But the shire has consistently resisted revealing the true costs of operating the Hastings complex to councillors and the community by failing to disclose interest and depreciation charges related to it. The shire borrowed $5.5 million to build the complex. Interest on this sum would be in the range of $300,000 a year, perhaps more. Depreciation calculated on a total development cost of around $8 million for the Park/Pantry, as stated by shire chief executive officer Michael Kennedy, would result in an additional $200,000 cost annually. This $500,000 should be included in the annual operating expenses of swimming pools, according to the Local Government Asset Investment Guidelines. The shire argues it does not need to include these expenses because of its method of calculating the property recharge applying to the Park/Pantry. However, the shire must include these figures in its budget, but apparently chooses to put them elsewhere in its books. Repeated questions at council’s public question time and written questions to shire officers have for years failed

to elicit useful or meaningful information about the Pelican Park/Pantry costings. Pelican Pantry – very much the CEO’s brainchild from inception – failed as a shire enterprise. In the nine years the shire operated it, the Pantry lost more than $2 million of ratepayers’ funds. It has now found a private enterprise operator for the Pantry. Documents obtained under freedom of information reveal the shire was including an annual recharge (rental) amount for Pelican Pantry of between $20,000 and $36,000 over eight years from 2003. This compares with the $135,000 annual rent it will get from its new tenant. Ratepayers will therefore be some $400,000 a year better off from the Pantry because of the rent and the end of the heavy annual losses it was incurring. Critics of the shire’s administration of the Park/Pantry fear the shire will repeat the mistakes it has made at the Hastings complex when it draws up the business plan for the proposed Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre at Rosebud by not engaging a professional private pool operator to run the new complex – wherever and whenever it is built. Councils pay up to 40 per cent more for staff than do private operators, in large part because of the enterprise bargaining expertise of private operators.

Lunar ticking-off reveals Easter’s real meaning THE Emu has just returned from his annual circumambulation of the Mornington Peninsula, taking fond leave of his bride on the eve of Holy Friday in a clockwise direction and returning four evenings later – a journey made most comfortable by the mattresses distributed as regular as caravanserai along the shire roadsides. Not only was much of this bedding in good nick, it was often accompanied by televisions, although roadside power points were lacking. But Emu was weary by dusk and inclined to slumber, and nowanights free-to-air TV is mainly rubbish anyway. As well as mattresses, Emu found many black plastic bags on the roadside containing foodstuffs, assorted pre-loved household items and a few interesting shiny trinkets that have since appealed greatly to Mrs Emu. He remembered the shire in his prayers each night for organising this providence for peripatetic pilgrims. Wonderful that Besgrove St (shire HQ) would encourage folk to help tourists with al fresco accommodation and tasty titbits along the highways, and more so in the byways. But Emu’s most precious find was a discarded handwritten sermon, a crumpled and tattered Easter epistle of great power and insight, speaking ecstatically of the moon and sombrely of the wicked persecution that has occurred under its glow through the millennia. Apparently this was a draft, rejected in frustration by its author, possibly seeking a purer form of words to convey his (or her) message. But the words had a spooky relevance to the right here and right now,

with references to those engaged in sacred public service being attacked for doing what they believed in, toiling for their communities under “the near full Waking Moon ... the significance being that Easter is always held on the first full moon in April. The pedantic Emu checked this and found the author somewhat mistaken – either that or an Orthodox church adherent who didn’t pay attention at Sunday school. Under the Julian calendar, Orthodox Easter varies from 4 April to 8 May. Under the more widely used Gregorian calendar, it can fall from 22 March to 25 April. Easter Sunday has fallen in Emu’s Gregorian lifetime in the month of March on seven occasions (in 1986, 1989, 1991, 1997, 2002, 2005 and 2008) and will fall on 31 March next year and 27 March in 2016. But this is a trifling detail in the broad and inspiring flow of the sermon. Even Shakespeare made the odd factual error. The grand eulogy put Emu in mind of councillors and especially shire officials who toil tirelessly and for almost no reward (proportionate to their gargantuan talents) for the public good. The anonymous sermoniser clearly is a fellow traveller with Emu in his/ her solicitous regard for these unpraised – nay! often derided – toilers, as well as in his near-pagan devotion to the moon.

The sermon describes the mysterious silver orb in soaring flights of prose as the “full Seed Moon, the “Full Fish Moon, the “Pink Moon, the “Sprouting Grass Moon, the “Egg Moon and the “Paschal (Easter) Moon. The scribe’s masterful command of the language made, as The Bard once put it, “each particular feather on Emu’s neck to stand on end, like quills upon the fretful porpentine. But, ah, the mood suddenly changed. The sermon was directed at a particular sinner – it was a rare personal sermon. “Consider how you regularly and often treat people with contempt, the sinner is admonished, somewhat tautologically, “how you persecute people using the media, while at the same time failing to disclose your own contemptuous behaviour! How you play the man and not the ball! Homely and distinctly Australian, that. It reminded Emu of Acts 9, read to him by Mrs Emu during her biblical period, with its reference to heavenly light: “... [S]uddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven, says the King James version. “And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, ‘Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?’ “And he said, ‘Who art thou, Lord?’ A redundant question, really, Emu has always thought, considering Saul knew jolly well who was ticking him off. But not a point he ever raised with the spouse when she was ablaze with the Glory. “And the Lord said, ‘I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks’. And there, in a pungent sentence, is

the nub of the sermoniser’s admonition. Not pretty language, in fact undeniably crude, but a forceful and modern way of cutting directly to the truth. The pr*cks indeed need to be kicked against, and the epistiliser – if Emu may be granted the liberty of creating a word – has donned the steel-capped boots and is swinging the hooves good and hard. They rightly expresses concern to the sinner that “many Bible followers forget what that (Easter) story says and means, while munching on their overpriced and unhealthy chocolate and hot cross buns. Isn’t gluttony one of the sins? Indeed it is! Along with wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust and envy. Emu bows his head contritely, having just polished off the remains of a burger and most of a bucket of chips he found in a black plastic bag. Greed and gluttony: two deadly sins in one meal. There’ll be hell to pay for that, digestion-wise. With a discreet belch, muffled by a weary wing, Emu tucked the crumpled epistle under his roadside mattress beside the remaining chips, both to be finished in the morning. It was getting too dark to read. He lay back and gazed up at what he would now always think of as the Paschal Moon, wondering whether the sermoniser knew of Paschal Canice Mooney, the Irish Fianna Fail politician, journalist and broadcaster. Was Mooney known in the Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament) as Mooney the Looney, Emu wondered, for his strong interest in country music stars on both sides of the Atlantic?

Had he ever heard of David Gordon “Slim Dusty Kirkpatrick? Was the sermon’s author fully appreciated by their colleagues? Questions, always questions, to which he would never know the answers. He drowsed off into the lunar ether with Mrs Emu’s favourite rural aria, Stand By Your Emu, shimmering in his ears.

Mad about saffron UNRELIABLE word reaches Chez Emu of a new food store opening soon somewhere on the Mornington Peninsula, possibly in Hastings. Mrs Emu, who brought the gossip home, is most intrigued, having gone through an Eastern Mysticism stage ranging from Afghanistan through Pakistan, India and Tibet, all the way to Japan. She still ommmms occasionally when stressed. It is an era Emu had long forgotten, when everything eaten in Emoh Emu was saffron-flavoured, all cloth goods had to be saffron coloured and the abode reeked like an Oriental bazaar. Now the horror of it flooded back. “I’m told it will be called the Deli Lama. She was whispering, as though spies abounded in the neighbourhood and she was imparting a state secret. “And it will specialise in Tibetan takeaway, I’m told. She smiled conspiratorially – not an easy feat for one with a beak. “Isn’t that clever? The ‘Deli Lama’. You know – Deli-Dalai. The Dalai Lama, the Tibetan leader in exile. What a good name. She tittered till her tail feathers susurrated. Emu

Family’s search for missing pal

State provides jobs boost for Hastings

ON a quest for adventure or a victim of foul play? Either way, one thing is certain; Doofy is missing. Doofy, right, went missing on 31 March. The dog’s owner, Gwyn Kitchener had left him at her son’s house on Speedwell St, Somerville. Doofy is a Staffordshire terrier. He has tan coloured fur with distinctive white markings. He did not have a collar on at the time he went missing, but he is microchipped and is registered with the council. Ms Kitchener says Doofy is a people lover and would not hesitate to jump into a stranger’s car, but would now be missing his family. He is 10 years old and a valued member of the family. If anyone has any information on Doofy’s whereabouts, they are asked to call 0417 997 441 or 0408 901 245 or Peninsula RSPCA on 5978 9000.

TWO state government programs will boost employment and training opportunities for people in the Hastings area, says MP Neale Burgess. He said $68,000 for the Getting Ahead project and the continuation of the Hastings job club Start Up would help people into work or training. The Hastings MP said it was important for people to have access to meaningful work “not just for the financial benefits it brings but also for the ability to participate in the wider community”. Getting Ahead, a workshop program that helps participants develop a personal plan to reach their goals, will receive $36,000. A Getting Ahead worker will be employed 15 hours a week to provide a series of programs in Hastings. Participants who complete the program will join the “job club” Start Up at Hastings Community Hub.

Shire gives young musos industry chance MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire’s FReeZA committee is offering young people the chance to learn event management, sound engineering and music mentoring. FReeZA is a state government program that supports young Victorians to get involved in community life by planning and running drug-, alcoholand smoke-free music and cultural events for other young people.

The program will run from Hastings Community Hub for the first 12 weeks starting 24 April and then move to the Mornington area. Kiri Thompson said the FReeZA committee was looking for young people from across the peninsula aged from 14 years. “The committee will run for 12 months, organising music mentoring and event management programs

throughout the peninsula,” she said. “The committee will use the training skills they acquire through the program to produce music and cultural events. “We are also searching for Hastings and Mornington musicians aged 14-18 to take part in a 12-week performance program.” To register interest in the FReeZA committee or the performance programs, call Kiri Thompson on 5950

1666 or email kiri.thompson@mornpen.vic.gov.au For more information go to www. mpys.com.au FReeZA staff will be at the Balnarring Muso night on Saturday 21 April at Balnarring Hall to accept expression of interest forms and answer questions. A jam session with free live to air opportunities runs from 3-9pm.

Mr Burgess said partners of Getting Ahead included Bunnings, BlueScope Steel, Peninsula Health, Sarina Russo Job Access, The ORS Group, My Recruitment, Nepean Industry Edge Training, Peninsula Training and Employment Program, Peninsula Youth Connections, and Mornington Peninsula Shire youth services. Start Up will receive $32,000, which will be used to continue the employment of a part-time “community learning, earning and engagement officer” who will run the weekly job club programs, maintain a network of service providers and agencies, and link people with employment and training opportunities. “It is anticipated the funding will provide up to eight opportunities for employment,” Mr Burgess said. “For local job-seekers, Getting Ahead has been particularly effective in helping people identify and address the non-vocational barriers preventing them from getting or keeping a job.” Minister for Housing Wendy Lovell said people who don’t have a job could be excluded, both economically and socially, leaving them isolated, withdrawn and trapped in a cycle of disadvantage. “This is why one of the key platforms of the state government is to provide opportunities for vulnerable and disadvantaged Victorians to connect with education, training, and work opportunities, like those in these two projects,” she said.

An Ode to Modestine, scooter By Fran Henke “There was something neat and high bred, a Quakerish elegance about the rogue that hit my fancy on the spot. She passed into my service for the consideration of 65 francs and a bottle of brandy.” Robert Louis Stevenson baptised the donkey on which he toured southern France in 1878 “Modestine”. THIS oddball information came from a dear friend in Sydney on hearing I had been forced to resort to a scooter to “walk” my dogs. In the letter, my friend, with whom I grew up in newspapers, sent an “embellishment” that she wangled free from Deus Ex Machina, a very expensive motorcycle emporium in Sydney. The concept of deus ex machina was also new to me. Before applying the sticker to Modestine, I looked it up: A deus ex machina (god out of the machine) is a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly and abruptly solved with the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability or object. Thus my red scooter, as secondhand as was Stevenson’s donkey, became known as “Modestine”. Modestine was the intervention to my steadily increasing daily problem of going walkies (that word, signal for excitement in every dog owner’s home). The Pride Victory 4 (aka Modestine) came to me after research at WesternPort Mobility, which has a range of machines, secondhand, owners moved onwards and upwards, cost from $1700 for a three-wheeler to $3000 and more for four. I was drawn to a wicked threewheeler dressed up to look like a Harley-Davidson, but the practicalities were remote of driving that plus controlling two wilful dogs. Took the boys to the mower/mobility HQ to try them out first (thank you, Ray). No point in buying a scooter to solve a problem to find it doesn’t. Raji, who dislikes bicycles (plus men in jeans), behaved pretty well. Kabir, the smaller Tibetan spaniel cross, took to it like a diminutive husky. Felt a bit teary. Having once been the proud (elderly) owner of a sports car, this was an emotional transition. An expert Cribby friend shepherded the decision. We realised four wheels were essential for safety given the absence of footpaths in our area of Old Tyabb. A “supermarket” scooter was not going to do the job, as much as I wanted to appear insignificant.

Taken for a ride: Fran Henke and friends try out the new “walkies” machine.

Went home to think about that and the cost. Then another of the dogs’ friends, Ben Loois, came to say he’d extracted and polished his late father’s scooter. It was waiting in his driveway for appraisal. This was a neat red scooter, 10 years old. The chair was comfortable and we were able to adjust it to suit my needs. Done. We loaded the demountable sections into the back of my car. After 10 years of sitting in a garage, it needed new batteries and the tyres checking. Went online and found that 14psi was needed. Mick Doherty, our neighbour, had a portable air compressor so the tyres were inflated for action. Seeing this would be a valuable accessory, I bought one ($54) to keep in the car. Then I was ordered to have a flag. No way! I was not going to potter round the streets like a disaster with an orange flag. Argument: Essential.

No. Then a Facebook friend suggested a Tibetan prayer flag for the mast instead of the orange plastic job. This seemed a reasonable compromise ($5 for the prayer flag). So after numerous inquiries around Hastings, found the bicycle shop sold safety flags ($19). The mast was too tall for my liking. So while the rear vision mirror was being fixed by the same kind Mick, I “pruned” the mast by a foot. He offered to fit the flag too. What happened to the flag? It’s too short, he said. Cut this bit off, I said proudly, attaching the orange Tibetan cloth depicting the Goddess riding her tiger. “Fran,” said Mick firmly. “There is men’s work and there is women’s work. This was men’s work.” Maybe so, but this was my compromise. I’d already been aware of “the looks”. People in wheelchairs get them. It’s hard for folk to look beyond the wheels to the person.

Driving round the streets on Modestine was such a relief. Movement without hurting, though not without challenges. Day one we wrapped Raji’s lead around the back axle. While he stood trapped, I took Kabir into a nearby house to ask for help. There was a party on, so three strong men were available to tip Modestine on her side and undo the lead while I held the dog. Thank you! We’re getting better at it now. Other dogs or cyclists can present potential chaos, but oncoming motorists have been patient so far. We don’t feel safe in strong wind and we don’t go out in wet conditions (electricity and water not ideal companions). On the controls I’ve learnt to dial up “hare” to get her up hills, “tortoise” to navigate the gate and kerbs. We bought a barbecue cover at $16 to protect Modestine from the rain in her woodshed (purpose rebuild courtesy of Mick). Custom-made covers would have cost a bundle. VicRoads has a booklet of advice on “motorised devices” that must have a maximum speed of 10km/h and may only be used by people who have difficulty in walking. The checklist before each trip recommends:  Ensure the batteries are fully charged.  Is the seat locked?  Are you dressed in light coloured clothing? (Given slow pace, wear a hat against the sun).  Take a mobile phone.  Insurance – we included Modestine with the car’s RACV Roadside Assistance for an extra $44 a year.  Carry identification (for me, my polio medical alert card, too).  Ensure shopping items don’t upset the balance or get in the way of controls. Out and about:  Avoid uneven surfaces and tackle curbs front-on not at an angle.  Take turns slowly (tortoise).  Choose safe crossing points; avoid roundabouts.  Ensure eye contact with motorists – have they seen you?  Tram and train tracks are traps for small wheels.  Use mirrors constantly to check for pedestrians, bikes and cars.  When stopping, turn off motor and don’t park on slopes. “She was patient, elegant in form, the colour of an ideal mouse, and inimitably small. Her faults were those of her race and sex; her virtues were her own.” – Robert Louis Stevenson, 1878. Western Port News 17 April 2012

Hastings first crafty festival a hit By Fran Henke HASTINGS’ first Craft Fest – inspired by Alice Springs’ Beanie Fest – was held on 31 March with the support of the Hastings Uniting Church. In middle of last year on a caravanning trip north, Sandra Beckett, a member of the church community, found herself in Alice Springs at the time of the famous Beanie Fest. This event has been organised by the people of The Alice for around 15 years with knitted and crocheted beanies coming in from all parts of the world. The good humour and friendliness of the festival struck a chord. Sandra began thinking that something similar would be great for the Western Port area, regarded almost as a poor cousin to the rest of Mornington Peninsula. By the time the caravan trip was over, she had several pages of notes about possible community events that could be held at the renovated Hastings Uniting Church. Talking it over with other church women, a craft fest was decided on and given the go ahead by Western Port Parish Council. Bittern Sunday Market gave the project a grant. Three local real estate agents – BTRE Real Estate, Satchwells Real Estate and Century21 Real Estate – donated billboard advertisements in Tyabb, Hastings and Balnarring. After six months of organisation, the fest was held on Saturday 31 March, when 19 stalls were set up in the building at the rear of the historic chapel on the corner of Marine Pde and Hodgins Rd. Entry was by gold coin and by opening time the hall began filling with visitors to the work of local people and groups.

These included mosaics, teddy bears, basketry, quilts, embroidery, spinning, weaving, marionettes, jewellery and lace-making with mixed crafts from individuals and members of the CWA and local community houses. Most of the stallholders had items for sale. It was also an opportunity for craft groups and businesses to promote themselves. Late entries were housed in market tents in the gardens outside the hall, with a large marquee (loaned by Hastings branch of the Bendigo Community Bank) for kids’ crafts. Although it was a fine day, the wind caused havoc for these stallsholders. Some stallholders held “get started” classes in various crafts, while others demonstrated their skills. The Uniting Church op shop had a stall with craft items for sale, and Embroidery Essentials of Carrum also took a stall to showcase and sell threads and embroidery ribbons. Both proved popular, giving local embroiderers the opportunity to acquire usually hard to source embroidery items. Hastings church women organised food at low cost with coffee and an array of homemade cakes and sandwiches. By the end of the day stallholders were reporting their satisfaction with the steady stream of visitors and compliments on the organisation were received. Although primary purposes of the Craft Fest were to promote local craftspeople and to make use of the little used church buildings, $1600 was raised. This money will go to the continuing restoration of the small brick chapel, which is now used for church services. Will we do it all again next year? With much appreciated community support – yes!

Health officer warns about mushrooms THE annual poison mushroom warning has been issued by state health officer Dr Michael Ackland. He said autumn conditions had created ideal growing conditions for poisonous mushrooms. “People should avoid gathering wild mushrooms due to the risk of collecting poisonous varieties that look similar to edible varieties. Two of the state’s most dangerous are the death cap fungus, Amanita phalloides and

the yellow staining mushroom, Agaricus xanthodermus. Death cap is a large mushroom with a cap ranging from light olive green to greenish yellow. The gills are white, and the base of the stem is surrounded by a cup-shaped sac. The commonly found yellow staining mushroom turns yellow when the cap or stem is bruised by a thumbnail. LETTERS Two terms on council AS a former councillor of Mornington Peninsula Shire Council (2005-08), I believe consideration should be given to limiting the number of terms a councillor can serve. A maximum of two terms (eight years) would address the “entrenchment of long-serving councillors, which I feel is most unhealthy as power plays and ego-tripping is not conducive to good governance. I am particularly concerned with a recent issue, which was revealed in The News, where Cr Reade Smith is employed by Cr Anne Shaw in her hydroponic herb growing business at Mt Martha. I query how there can be independence in the decision-making process with such an arrangement in place? Would Cr Smith seriously “bite the hand that feeds him? I would have expected greater clarity of thinking from two long-serving councillors. Aldona Martin, Tyabb

Broken election promises IT would be of much greater benefit to the Mornington Peninsula if all the promises made before the last state election had been fulfilled. In Balnarring, we are still waiting for a muchpromised roundabout at the intersection of Frankston-Flinders and Balnarring, Stumpy Gully and Balnarring Beach roads. The Baillieu government’s great idea to stuff up Western Port with a mad dream of shipping brown coal from Hastings and extending the port to facilitate the import of ever-greater quantities of overseas manufactured goods to boost our foreign balance of payment deficit is a maddening and frustrating sign of the uselessness of the current crop of politicians. Of course, all this can only be done by flogging off the Port of Melbourne for a pittance, when one considers how much the dredging of Port Phillip cost taxpayers (‘Sale plan to pay for port’, The News, 27/3/12). I am sick and tired of a stream of broken promises, by all major political parties, and the hare-

brained schemes to confuse us with ever new proposals that usually end up in tears for the public, for example, the desalination plant, freeways and not so freeways, Alpine grazing, toxic coalfired power plants without pollution control and logging in old growth forests. Enough is enough. Let us see some progressive and constructive policies, or is that asking too much? Rupert Steiner, Balnarring

Uphill promotion IT was uphill all the way for cyclists this week as they pedalled their hardest to promote the annual Degani Arthurs Seat Bay 2 Bay Ride. The group made the ascent for the media on Tuesday to advertise the event being held for the second time, on Sunday 29 April. A news release from Mornington Peninsula Shire described the Degani Arthurs Seat Bay 2 Bay Ride as “a recreational event with a competitive edge. Competitors can choose from three distances, all starting at Mornington Park. The hardest is the 113km loop of the peninsula taking in Boneo Rd and climbing to the summit of Arthurs Seat from both directions. A 65km loop also tackles Arthurs Seat before heading back through Red Hill. Families, youngsters and those wanting an easier pedal can tackle a 20km ride. Riders can choose to donate or fundraise for the Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria. Money raised will go toward services provided by the foundation including information, advice and support, epilepsy counselling and practical assistance, as well as education and training, research and advocacy on behalf of people with epilepsy. The Epilepsy Foundation provides support for people living with epilepsy and their families and to raise awareness of epilepsy. For more information go to www.epinet.org.au Entry fees are $99 for the 113km course; $89 for the 65km course; $55 a person or $130 a family for the 20km course. Peninsula residents are eligible for a $10 discount on all three rides.

Above: Quita Freeman says a final goodbye to her oldest client, Merle Chapman, 95, of Balnarring. BELOW: Satchwells director Sid Fergsuon shares a few stories about Quita at her farewell.

Quita calls it a day AFTER almost 18 years working with Satchwells Real Estate as senior property manager, Quita Freeman retired late last month and was farewelled at a small gathering at the company’s Hastings office. Clients past and present were in attendance as were many of Quita’s tradespersons who she has called on throughout the years at all times of day. Satchwells Real Estate director Sid Ferguson praised Quita for her loyalty to the company and her professionalism in always keeping up to date with the latest legislation in property management. Danielle Dawson will now assume the role as senior property manager at the Hastings office and is positive about the challenge

of filling Quita’s shoes. Quita is looking forward to retirement in Nyora with her dogs and horses.

Stylish two-bedroom unit WELL-located and beautifully presented, this two-bedroom unit is an absolute must-see. The interior is all open plan with a large formal lounge room having a gas wall furnace and air-conditioning. The adjoining modern kitchen has stainless-steel appliances including a dishwasher and there is a nice little dining alcove. The living space can be extended during the warmer months with the outdoor entertaining area, which can also be accessed from the single garage. Spotless in presentation, the unit is very private and low maintenance.

Film night at museum There will be a film night at Hastings Museum at 5pm on Monday 23 April when Genevieve will be shown. This features a Darracq car, originally known as Annie but then renamed Genevieve after the success of the film. The French-made car has been on show in Australia. Genevieve and its sister car Spyker are now displayed at the Louwman Museum in The Hague, Netherlands. A gold coin donation is requested as an entrance fee. Light refreshments (including popcorn) will be available for sale. Details and bookings: Beverley Mason, 5977 5786 or Ann, 0448 023 287.

History buffs at Sages Cottage Representatives of Hastings-Western Port Historical Society, SomervilleTyabb and District Heritage Society, Mornington & District Historical Society, Dromana & District Historical Society, Balnarring & District Historical Society, Flinders District Historical Society, Nepean Historical Society, Rye & District Historical Society and National Trust, Mornington Peninsula Branch met at Sages Cottage Farm for a tour and talk about the property and the services offered there, including animal-assisted therapy for children. Morning tea was served by hospitality students. The CEO of Menzies Inc, Holly Reid, talked about the

Flying high during Somers summers history of the children’s home, now called Menzies Inc and its services to children since 1865. The children’s home has been on the Mornington Peninsula since 1901 and uses Sages Cottage for various programs. Sally Robins, the shire’s local history officer, arranged the visit. During the morning, digitisation officer Murray Adams explained the work he is doing to assist the groups and the benefits of having photographs, charts and maps scanned and digitised. Some history society members stayed for lunch at Sages Cottage Farm, and enjoyed sitting on the verandah on the glorious autumn day.

THE photo was taken during the summer holidays of 1937-38 at “Sandy’s aerodrome paddock” in Somers. Throughout the 1930s an air pageant took place towards the end of January in the paddocks of the property “Campsie” on Sandy Point Rd. RAAF airmen from Point Cook used to visit to put on a display for the boys staying at the Lord Somers Camp. The display included manoeuvres such as loop the loops

and diving stunts. Bristol Bulldogs and Western Woppities first used were joined by Hawker Demon fighter planes and an Avro Anson bomber later in the decade. The Balnarring & District Historical Society can be contacted by phone 5983 5326 or email balhist@optusnet.com.au The History Room at the Balnarring Hall is open every Monday morning from 10am to noon. Performance HOW many times do we hear the phrase “final or farewell tour”? It reminds me of how many comebacks Kiss and John Farnham made. However I was not surprised to hear Barry Humphries announce his “farewell tour” after many years of entertaining the world. Humphries once said he had no intention of being an entertainer and, after dropping out of Melbourne University, started working for EMI. But he has won international recognition for his creation and portrayal of several caricatures from Australian life, in particular Dame Edna Everage, Barry McKenzie and Les Patterson. His first show was A Nice Night’s Entertainment in 1962 followed by A Load of Old Stuffe (1971), A Night with Dame Edna (1978-79) and many others. His comic strip The Adventures of Barry McKenzie appeared in the UK magazine Private Eye from 1963 to 1974. In 1972 Humphries wrote the screenplay for a film of the same name in which he acted the part of Edna Everage. His other film appearances included The Getting of Wisdom (1977) in a “straight” role; Les Patterson Saves the World (1987) which he

co-wrote and acted in; and Marsupials: The Howling III (1987). In 1988 Humphries was named show business personality of the year by the Variety Club of Great Britain and the same year made the television series The Dame Edna Experience. He was named Australian show business ambassador at the 1994 Mo Awards. Humphries will perform a limited number of farewell shows around Australia – Eat Pray Laugh! – including at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne from 19 July to 2 August with three matinees at 1pm on 25 and 28 July and 1 August. Tickets from 136 100. www.dame-edna.com

www.daintygroup.com *** THERE is no doubt Australian radio programmers did not give Aussie duo Air Supply the airplay they deserved. Right from their inception, Air Supply was underestimated. Even when their debut single Love and Other Bruises (CBS) hit the charts in 1976, the group was still largely ignored. Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock (pictured) eventually turned to the tough United States market where they became instant superstars in the early 1980s. They became the only group in the ’80s to that point to have seven singles in the US top 40, making

them millionaires. Lost in Love, Every Woman in the World, All Out of Love and That One That You Love all reached the No 1 spot in the US. Here I Am and Even the Nights are Better made the top 10 while Sweet Dreams made the top 40. Air Supply evolved after Russell met Hitchcock worked together during the Jesus Christ Superstar New Zealand tour. Chrissie Hammond was also a part of the group, but decided to pursue a solo career before coming a part of the duo Cheetah. At the American Music Awards in Los Angeles in 1982, Air Supply was voted best group for 1981. In Australia the duo received the most outstanding achievement at the Countdown Awards. It is an undeniable fact of history that Air Supply ranks with AC/DC, Men At Work, Bee Gees and INXS as one of the five most successful groups to have emerged from the Australian pop/rock scene. On 27 April, EMI Music will release a new “best of” collection featuring 19 tracks from 1976 to 1983. The Ultimate Collection includes all the classic hits with a CD booklet featuring in-

dren’s writer Andrew Bolt gave us the benefit of his youthful intellectual input. I wonder why young Andrew refers to those he disagrees with as from the left, yet apparently nobody is from the right. No, they be conservatives. I’m with Germaine on Julia’s dress style. On the other hand, Tony looks very chooky also. *** I’VE never been for or against the proposed pool on the Rosebud foreshore, but I do believe a pool close to public transport is a good thing for the southern peninsula, assuming the state government comes to the party. What is far more important to me is that we do not lose Rosebud Memorial Hall. Arts on the Mornington Peninsula is already almost non-existent and anything that worsens this situation is shameful. If this pool idea ever gets off the ground, which is doubtful for mine, will our council include a plan to replace the hall? *** SO many females studying sociology (functioning of human society?) and philosophy (the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality and existence?). Imagine in a few years, this spreading of information. Thousands of females dominating the airwaves, more meet-

ings (they adore a good looong meeting) and an adjoining creche for their lovely little kiddies. This is no major problem for me because, as most of my readers know, I prefer females to males, always assuming there is no hanky panky involved. All one has to do over coffee is say hello, and the females mount the rostrum and continue on, ad infinitum. And I won’t be here when the takeover takes place anyway. But I sometimes worry for my male grandchildren. A big wide world of meetings, committees, conclusions? Am I being sexist? I’m blowed if I know. *** A FRIEND went overseas and on return told me all about the pyramids. It stuck in my mind, the attraction of the pyramids. Why would anyone pay homage to them? All those thousands of slaves working and dying for a madman to skite about himself. Ditto the Great Wall of somewhere. A useless monument to greed, ambition, superstition and vanity. I’m a coffee on the footpath in Paris man; people watcher. *** DO you know people who are on a disability support pension and work for cash? I cannot help wondering about

what effect these people have on the people who are truly entitled to it. I was talking recently, in the nicest possible way, and suggested to one of them: “but theoretically people in your situation are taking money from all of us and not contributing to the needs of everybody”. This, of course, was putting it as lightly as I dared, being a chicken at heart. The answer: “I don’t agree. I pay my taxes every time I buy something and pay my bills.” Sounds fair? *** LAST September the government changed the disability support pension requirements in that those on this pension must show that they are actively seeking employment. The minister (Jenny Macklin) told us that this change was about helping people with disabilities to find work. This is nonsense, of course. Yet another way to chip away at our benefits. They call it “the way forward”, but it’s only their way, which is to save money. Cynical? Probably. *** JAMES Reyne hosts The Lineup at Cube 37 at the Frankston Arts Centre, a musical showcase for up and coming musicians created by The Little Theatre Company. The 25 March concert

A Grain of Salt I WANT my $96 back. After a month of pretend football followed by expert conclusions as a result of the pretend nonsense, we are into another AFL season, but before it starts we get all that palaver for (seemingly) hours of what is likely to happen when it does start. And all those national anthems? Oh woe is me. If the match is televised on 7 and Fox, we get shots of nothing on Fox while 7 commercials are on. A Fox-only match and we get Dermot Brereton’s boring reasons as to why a particular action just happened. Perhaps a quiz as to who will ask the famous “What was going through your mind?” question the most? Or Danny Frawley’s library of adjectives consisting mostly of one word: unbelievable. Press on, Cliffie. Tape everything and watch with the fast forward button in hand. Twelve wins in a season will do it at $8 per win. Delete losses. *** GERMAINE Greer got a mild pasting from the more trenchant feminists for suggesting Mzzz Melody’s jackets were not form fitting; also referring to our Prime Minister’s rear. I thought the bottom line for feminists was equal rights for women, but apparently there are unwritten behavioural rules. Even Herald Sun chil-

Joke!!! A WOMAN gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says “Ugh, that’s the ugliest baby I’ve ever seen!’’ The woman walks to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her: “The driver just insulted me!’’ The man says: “You go up there and tell him off. Go on, I’ll hold your monkey for you.’’

They’re not being criticised only for their behavior, but for their legs and breasts, for their double chin; their whole being is exposed to criticism. Premiers Sorras outlast spirited Somerville By Toe Punt MPNFL Nepean League reigning premiers Sorrento withstood a last quarter fightback to record an impressive 10-point victory over Somerville on Saturday. The Sharks, who recorded a strong victory over Dromana on Easter Saturday, went into Saturday’s match without star players including Brendan Cairns, Kayle Stringer-Morris, Trevor Mattison, Troy Schwarze, Leigh Treeby and Cayden Beetham. During the second quarter, skipper Benny McCormack went down with a hamstring strain and Glen Boyington was knocked out. Despite being two players down during the game, the home side was able to stretch its 13-point half-time lead to 21 points at the final break. Sorrento won 12.12-84 to Somerville 10.14-74. Somerville got within nine points at the 10-minute mark of the last quarter, but wasn’t able to get any closer. The Eagles also went into the game far from full strength. Will Jolley, Aaron Murray, Todd Farrelly, Chris King, Jed Sutton, Nick Brown and Lachy Edwards were all missing on Saturday. Eagles’ coach Leigh Stewart will be disappointed by the result, but buoyed by the fact his side, despite not being at full strength, was able to push the reigning premier for four quarters. Justin Farrelly was outstanding for the Eagles in his first game with the club, while Chris Bagot was superb for the Sharks in the back line. Dion Phillips was awarded the Radio Port Phillip man of the match award for his tireless four-quarter effort. A rushed behind in the dying seconds of the game saw Crib Point sneak over the line in a thriller against Red Hill, 15.15-105 to 16.8-104. Trailing for the large majority of the afternoon, Jon Flack took a contested

mark and converted for the Magpies to draw the scores level with a handful of minutes to play. Brad Davison then kicked the ball off the ground with seconds left and watched as the ball trickled through the behinds. It was enough to hand the Pies the four points. Magpies coach Dave Lawson said he was thrilled with the way his charges fought out the game. “I thought we were down and out at three-quarter time to be honest,” Lawson said. “Red Hill was running us ragged and I wasn’t sure we had the fitness on the big Red Hill ground to fight it out,” he said. “However, some of the second and third efforts in that last quarter were sensational and it was fantastic to get a win in a close one.” Lawson agreed that winning the tight ones was important this season. “The competition is so even, it is vital that you convert all of your opportunities, especially when you look at our draw and see Hastings at Hastings and Frankston at Frankston in the next two weeks.” Red Hill unveiled a number of new players, including Joe Krieger and Alex Lee. Both have been on AFL lists (Fremantle and Port Adelaide respectively) and provided the Hillmen with much-needed height. Jamie McCall was also a welcome addition, given his height. Dromana bounced back from its hammering against Sorrento last week to dish out a thrashing to Pearcedale, winning 26.16.172 to 9.13.67. The Tigers booted nine goals to one in the opening term and the game was done and dusted from that point. Chelsea recruit Anthony Bruhn was impressive in attack for the Tigers with six goals, while Paul Minchington was back to some of his best with five ma-

jors. It was a very disappointing day for the Panthers, who recruited heavily in the off-season. Three of their recruits in Tony Lester, Andrew Douglas and Chris Fortnam were among their better players. Hastings trailed for much of the match against Rosebud, but was able to dig deep in the last quarter and win 13.12-90 to 11.9-75. The Blues trailed by the smallest of margins at three-quarter time, but were able to boot five goals to two in the final term. Hastings coach Glenn Michie, who booted four goals in an outstanding display at centre half-forward, was proud of the way his players fought out the game. “I wasn’t overly impressed with our four-quarter performance, given that we were undisciplined at times and it cost us dearly,” Michie said. “That’s not the way we want to play our footy. In saying that, to lose Kyle Pinto [shoulder] and recruit Mark Devereaux [corked thigh] early in the match and then fight it out against quality opposition was pleasing. “Rosebud’s midfield is as good as it has been for a long time and we knew we were in for a tight match. To win a close one first up was great,” Michie said. Buds’ coach Mark Hustwaite said he was pleased to see that his side had “closed the gap” on last year’s grand finalists. “We were smashed by 19 goals by Hastings last year, so to get within 15 points in round one was pleasing,” Hustwaite said. “It was great to have Rhys Bancroft, Daniel Giarusso and Aaron Rose back out on the park [they players less than 10 games collectively last season], which gave us a seven-man midfield rotation. “Tom and Matt Baker also give us

the key position height we’ve been looking for and Chris Rogers did a great job down back for us. “To be honest, I couldn’t be more positive after a loss,” Hustwaite said. New Rye coach Ben Holmes was also up and about after his side’s thrashing of Frankston Bombers. The Demons led at every change and recorded an emphatic 17.15-117 to 8.10-58 victory. East Doncaster recruit Justin Van Unen finished with eight goals from 15 shots, while Darren Booth was clearly best on ground. Holmes told The News that beating Frankston at Frankston in round one was a brilliant start to the season. “They’re a very difficult side to beat at home and to win in that fashion was a great start,” Holmes said. Teenager Andrew Dean booted three goals, as did the coach. “It was my first run for the year and I was glad to get through. I started at centre half-back and played through the middle, then moved forward when

we lost Aaron Findlay [ankle],” Holmes said. “There were a lot of positives, including the form of Rhett Sutton, who spent the entire game in the ruck.” There wasn’t a lot to crow about for the Bombers. Tyabb proved it wasn’t going to be the whipping boys of the competition as some predicted, storming home to beat Devon Meadows. The Yabbies have had a long preseason under new coach Brad Coller and it came to the fore on Saturday, when they booting seven goals to three in the last quarter to win 17.13-115 to 12.10-82. Ash Waterstone booted four goals for the Yabbies while Cranbourne recruit Ryan Jones was oustanding. Scott Pickersgill, in his club record breaking 308 th game, was one of the best players on the ground. Callum O’Hare was the best of the Meadows. Interestingly, Tyabb skipper Matty Dimkos was best on ground in the reserves.

A Yabbie win on Picker’s record day By Yabbieman THE Tyabb Football Club opened it’s season with a hard fought win over the newcomers to the Nepean League, Devon Meadows, on Saturday. The event was more enjoyable to the Yabbie faithful as the match was Scott Pickersgill’s 308 game for the club. This tally has broken Peter (Razor) Morone’s long standing Tyabb games record. Scott, a two time best and fairest winner, is without doubt one of the greats of the club both on and off the field, his achievements are many but it is his outstanding contribution to the club over many years always willing to assist in whatever is required for the betterment of the club. Scott took on the position of Coach for season 2011 and did an outstanding job bringing on many young players that will secure the club for success in future years. Scott first played for Tyabb with the under 17’s in 1993 choosing to play basketball instead of junior football previously. Always athletic it was not long before Scott started to push for selection with a few senior games in 1995 but he was still slender and found it hard to match up to the stronger bodies. By 1996 a more mature body finally allowed Scott to reach his potential and he became a regular senior player culminating in a brilliant best and fairest year in 2000 along with his Premiership medal which he holds dear. The players presented Scott with a commemorative medallion prior to the match on Saturday. In accepting it, Scott spoke of his

Above: Scott and his father Ron on his 250th senior game in 2010. Ron was the clubs first coach in 1977 and Scott became coach in 2011 Right: Scott being chaired off the ground

love for the club, his friendships with all it’s present and past players and the supportive environment of the place. Scott’s voice choked a bit when his eyes met those of his dad, as he described how important family support had been over his 20 year playing career. Scott’s 308th game was another high quality performance. The game was a high quality, hard fought tussle. The Tyabb side had forged a 5 goal lead in the second quarter, but Devon Meadows cut that to 3 goals at half time. The third quarter was the classic arm wrestle with the backlines of both teams on top. But Devon went into the last

quarter trailing by only one goal. The Yabbies recovered their mojo in the last quarter, playing a quick style of possession play. They ran away from the opposition to the tune of 5 goals at the final siren. Better players for the winners were: Dale Binks, Scott Pickersgill, Ash Waterstone, Nick Waterstone, Ryan Jones and Matthew Grazules in a pretty even team performance. A reminder to club supporters and all residents of Tyabb that a SPORTS NIGHT will be held on May 25 with David Swarze, Rodney Hogg and Tom Hafey in attendance. Look out for the details in Tyabb shops, soon.

Blues, Bombers at MCG; Eagles tackle Hawks Round 4 Previews Friday 20 April St Kilda v Fremantle, Etihad Stadium, 7.50pm Round four starts with Ross Lyon returning to Etihad Stadium against his old club the Saints. After their disappointing round one loss, the Saints have come good, thrashing the Suns and Dogs. Since coming back from a season-ending knee injury last year, Lenny Hayes was amazing, winning 30 disposals and continuing to go hard at the footy. The Dockers on the weekend played a typical Ross Lyon game style – low scoring and great emphasis on defence, but like all Lyon teams they got the job done. This will be a very good match. If played in the west, the Dockers would win easily, but they have always struggled in Melbourne. Fremantle by 3 points. Saturday 21 April Carlton v Essendon, MCG, 1.45pm In a blockbuster at the MCG these two undefeated teams get set to replay last year’s elimination final. The Blues on the weekend had arguably their best game in 10 years when they defeated Collingwood in a flawless performance. Andrew Carrazzo, the best and fairest winner in 2007, reminded us that behind Murphy and

PAGE 38

Judd there is still plenty of talent to be shown. The Bombers struggled against the Suns but showed poise in getting home by 17 points. Forwards Michael Hurley and Stewart Crameri are creating their own dynamic duo, kicking 12 goals between them in the first three games. This game is a battle for the ages, but Carlton was absolutely outstanding on Friday night and there is no reason why they can’t make it four from four. Carlton by 33 points. Collingwood v Port Adelaide, Etihad Stadium, 2.10pm The Pies had one of their darkest nights in quite some time when they were smashed by the arch-enemy Carlton. With a season-ending injury to Luke Ball and a quad injury to Ben Reid, the Pies have to work extra hard to get back in the top four. The Power had a respectable loss for the second week in a row. Compared to last season, Port Adelaide has improved in leaps and bounds, but has struggled to run matches out against quality opponents. Despite all Collingwood’s injuries they still have a quality team capable of beating inexperienced sides, which is Port Adelaide summed up in two words. Collingwood by 20 points. Adelaide v GWS Giants, AAMI Stadium, 4.40pm After having their unbeaten run ended on the weekend, the Crows will look for a nice percentage booster against the Giants. Adelaide this year has a killer forward line with

Western Port News 17 April 2012

Taylor Walker, Kurt Tippett and Tom Lynch all in ripping form. The Giants played reasonable well, but were never a chance against a rampaging West Coast. Dylan Shiel played a great game on Daniel Kerr and also managed to get 27 touches. This week the Giants face another mission impossible game when they travel to South Australia to test their skills against the Crows. Adelaide by 92 points. West Coast v Hawthorn, Patersons Stadium, 7.40pm Despite resting three senior players, the Eagles had a walk in the park when they destroyed GWS by 89 points. Last year’s rising star runnerup Luke Shuey had a career best game, kicking five goals and getting 25 possessions. The Hawks bounced back from a disappointing round two loss and cruised to an easy win against Adelaide. Sharp shooter Luke Breust was knocked out as he courageously went back with the flight of the ball, and there will be some doubt about his fitness to play. During their grand final years, West Coast were nearly impossible to beat at home, and they look just as damaging this year. West Coast by 37 points. Brisbane v Gold Coast, Gabba, 7.40pm In the first “Q Clash” of the season the Lions and Suns are seeking bragging rights. The Lions on the weekend took the longest plane trip in the game, and never looked up to it against Fremantle. Jonathan Brown was

barely sighted, not adding to his three possessions after quarter time. The Suns finally lived up to expectations when they took it to the Bombers and played two quarters of inspiring football before being overrun by a better team. In 2011 it was the Gold Coast who snuck home in the first game, but the second time around the Lions who won by 10 goals. This time the Lions look more consistent and will probably get the points. Brisbane by 27 points. Sunday 22 April Geelong v Richmond, Simonds Stadium, 1.10pm This game will be a time for reflecting as Geelong unveils its 2011 premiership flag in front of the fans at Simonds Stadium, aka Kardinia Park. The Cats could use some of their 2011 form right now after two upset losses in three weeks. The Tigers on the weekend finally got a win on the board when they flogged Melbourne by 59 points. Shaun Grigg was best on ground, playing on at every opportunity and chiselling a hole through Melbourne’s midfield. He finished with 37 disposals. No matter the Cats’ form they’re always going to have a massive advantage playing in Geelong. Geelong by 24 points. Sydney v North Melbourne, SCG, 3.15pm The Swans have started 2012 with a bang, winning their first three games; they haven’t done this since 2001. After a patchy debut season, Victorian Luke Parker has cemented

a spot in this Sydney side by playing hard, contested football. Last Sunday was a massive turning point for North Melbourne when it knocked off reigning premier Geelong in a spectacular performance. This match will be won and lost in the Kangaroos’ forward line with big Drew Petrie, Aaron Edwards, Jack Ziebell and even Hamish McIntosh all big targets. North Melbourne hasn’t beaten Sydney since 2007 and struggled on the road last year, so this could be Sydney’s chance for its best start to the season in a long time. Sydney by 6 points. Melbourne v Western Bulldogs, MCG, 4.40pm It’s only three weeks into the season but already Melbourne is looking like a team struggling to find its place in the competition. The Demons on the weekend had another terrible loss, this time against Richmond. They were competitive until half-time but showed little resistance after that. Similar to the Demons, the Bulldogs were atrocious against a beatable side in St Kilda. Halfway through the last quarter the Bullies had only kicked two goals and, apart from Matthew Boyd, were struggling to get their hands on the ball. The loser of this game will be fighting GWS and Gold Coast to avoid the wooden spoon. Western Bulldogs by 13 points. Twitter: FootballTragic9 Total tips: 21
